We investigated the effects of obesity on metabolic, inflammatory, and oxidative stress parameters in the adipose tissue of patients with fatal COVID-19. Postmortem biopsies of subcutaneous adipose tissue were obtained from 25 unvaccinated inpatients who passed from COVID-19, stratified as nonobese (N-OB; body mass index [BMI], 26.5 ± 2.3 kg m -2 ) or obese (OB BMI 34.2 ± 5.1 kg m -2 ). Univariate and multivariate analyses revealed that body composition was responsible for most of the variations detected in the metabolome, with greater dispersion observed in the OB group. Fifteen metabolites were major segregation factors. Results from the OB group showed higher levels of creatinine, myo-inositol, O-acetylcholine, and succinate, and lower levels of sarcosine. The N-OB group showed lower levels of glutathione peroxidase activity, as well as higher content of IL-6 and adiponectin. We revealed significant changes in the metabolomic profile of the adipose tissue in fatal COVID-19 cases, with high adiposity playing a key role in these observed variations. These findings highlight the potential involvement of metabolic and inflammatory pathways, possibly dependent on hypoxia, shedding light on the impact of obesity on disease pathogenesis and suggesting avenues for further research and possible therapeutic targets., (© 2024 Wiley Periodicals LLC.)

Aim: The present study evaluated whether topiramate (TPM) treatment during the peripubertal period affects vascular parameters of male rats and whether oxidative stress plays a role in these changes., Main Methods: Rats were treated with TPM (41 mg/kg/day, gavage) or vehicle (CTR group) from the postnatal day (PND) 28 to 50. At PND 51 and 120 the rats were evaluated for: thoracic aorta reactivity to phenylephrine, in the presence (Endo+) or absence of endothelium (Endo-), to acetylcholine and to sodium nitroprusside (SNP), aortic thickness and endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) expression. In serum were analyzed: the antioxidant capacity by ferric reducing antioxidant power assay; endogenous antioxidant reduced glutathione, and superoxide anion. Results were expressed as mean ± s.e.m., differences when p < 0.05., Statistics: Two-way ANOVA (and Tukey's) or Student t-test., Key Findings: At PND 51, the contraction induced by phenylephrine in Endo+ ring was higher in TPM when compared to CTR. At PND 120, the aortic sensitivity to acetylcholine in TPM rats was reduced in comparison with CTR. The aortic eNOs expression and the aortic thickness were similar between the groups. Objective: To describe the temporal trend of notifications of physical, sexual and emotional violence and neglect against children in Brazil between 2011 and 2019., Methods: This was an ecological time-series study based on notifications of violence against children aged 0-9 years held on the Brazilian Notifiable Health Conditions Information System. Age-adjusted notification rates were calculated for Brazil as a whole, by national macro-region and by sex. Trends were assessed using Joinpoint Regression., Results: We analyzed 88,820 notifications of physical violence, 87,141 notifications of sexual violence, 52,359 notifications of emotional violence and 166,664 notifications of neglect. A rising trend was identified for notifications of physical, sexual and emotional violence and neglect for Brazil as a whole and for both sexes. Neglect accounted for the highest rate (95.24 notifications per 100,000 children in 2019). The Northeast and Southeast macro-regions had rising trends for all forms of violence., Conclusion: Notifications of physical, sexual and emotional violence and neglect showed rising trends in Brazil in the period studied., Implications for Services: Increasing trends in notifications of violence against children highlight the continued need for capacity building in health services, crucial for early detection, effective prevention and coordinated intervention, taking regional variations into account., Perspectives: Notification of violence against children by health services requires greater commitment by health workers. Future studies could combine multiple national databases and surveys to increase the accuracy of rates and trends.

The SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) virus has caused a devastating global pandemic of respiratory illness. To understand viral pathogenesis, methods are available for studying dissociated cells in blood, nasal samples, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and similar, but a robust platform for deep tissue characterization of molecular and cellular responses to virus infection in the lungs is still lacking. We developed an innovative spatial multi-omics platform to investigate COVID-19-infected lung tissues. Five tissue-profiling technologies were combined by a novel computational mapping methodology to comprehensively characterize and compare the transcriptome and targeted proteome of virus infected and uninfected tissues. By integrating spatial transcriptomics data (Visium, GeoMx and RNAScope) and proteomics data (CODEX and PhenoImager HT) at different cellular resolutions across lung tissues, we found strong evidence for macrophage infiltration and defined the broader microenvironment surrounding these cells. By comparing infected and uninfected samples, we found an increase in cytokine signalling and interferon responses at different sites in the lung and showed spatial heterogeneity in the expression level of these pathways. These data demonstrate that integrative spatial multi-omics platforms can be broadly applied to gain a deeper understanding of viral effects on cellular environments at the site of infection and to increase our understanding of the impact of SARS-CoV-2 on the lungs., (© 2023 The Authors. Aims: This study aimed to evaluate the short- and long-term adverse effects of blood pressure (BP), vascular endothelial function, and estrogen receptor (ERα and ERβ) modulation on endothelial function in female Wistar rats treated with topiramate (TPM), an antiepileptic drug, during the peripubertal period., Materials and Methods: Female Wistar rats were treated with TPM (41 mg/kg) or water (CTR group) by gavage from postnatal day (PND) 28 to 50 (peripubertal phase). At the end of the treatment, the TPM and CTR rats were divided into two groups and evaluated after 24 h or from PND 85 (adulthood). The rats were evaluated for: thoracic aorta reactivity to phenylephrine (Phenyl), acetylcholine (ACh), and sodium nitroprusside (SNP); aortic ring reactivity after ERα and ERβ antagonism; and BP., Key Findings: It was observed that vascular response to Phenyl, ACh, and SNP was similar between TPM and CTR rats in the short- and long-term evaluations. Protein restriction during early phases of body development, such as intrauterine life can favor the development of vascular disorders. However, it is not known if peripubertal protein restriction can favor vascular dysfunction in adulthood. The present study aimed to evaluated whether a protein restriction diet during peripubertal period favors endothelial dysfunction in adulthood. Male Wistar rats from postnatal day (PND) 30 until 60 received a diet with either 23% protein (CTR group) or with 4% protein (LP group). At PND 120, the thoracic aorta reactivity to phenylephrine, acetylcholine, and sodium nitroprusside was evaluated in the presence or absence of: endothelium, indomethacin, apocynin and tempol. The maximum response (Rmax) and pD2 (-log of the concentration of the drug that causes 50% of the Rmax) were calculated. The lipid peroxidation and catalase activity were also evaluated in the aorta. The data were analyzed by ANOVA (one or two-ways and Tukey's) or independent t -test; the results were expressed as mean ± S.E.M., p < 0.05. The Rmax to phenylephrine in aortic rings with endothelium were increased in LP rats when compared with the Rmax in CTR rats. Apocynin and tempol reduced Rmax to phenylephrine in LP aortic rings but not in CTR. The aortic response to the vasodilators was similar between the groups. Aortic catalase activity was lower and lipid peroxidation was greater in LP compared to CTR rats. Therefore, protein restriction during the peripubertal period causes endothelial dysfunction in adulthood through a mechanism related to oxidative stress.

Topiramate (TOP) is a psychotropic drug prescribed for the treatment of epilepsy in children older than 2 years of age and for migraine prophylaxis in adolescents. There is evidence that TOP promotes negative effects on the reproductive system of male rats. This study aimed to evaluate the immediate and late treatment effects of TOP during childhood and adolescence on the male rat reproductive system. Two experimental groups received 41 mg/kg of TOP daily, by gavage, from postnatal day (PND) 16 to 28 (TOPc group) or from PND 28 to 50 (TOPa group). Control groups (CTRc group or CTRa group) received water daily. Half of the anim-als were evaluated 24 h after the end of treatment (PND 29 and PND 51, respectively) and the remainder were evaluated in adulthood (PND120). The following parameters were determined: anogenital distance, sperm evaluation, testis' histomorphometry and plasma testosterone concentration. At PND 120, the volume (CTRc:62.58 ± 2.13; TOPc: 54.54 ± 2.10*%, p = 0.018) and total length (CTRc: 25.48 ± 1.61; TOPc: 18.94 ± 2.41*, p = 0.035) of seminiferous tubules were decreased and the volume of interstitial tissue (CTRc:37.41 ± 2.13; TOPc: 45.45 ± 2.09*%, p = 0.018) and number of Leydig cells/testis (CTRc: 277.00 ± 36.70; TOPc: 400.20 ± 13.23*, p = 0.013) were increased in the TOPc group. The other parameters remained similar between the groups. Therefore, the present study contributes to our understanding that childhood treatment with TOP has an impact on the rat reproductive system in adulthood, suggesting that this period is more sensitive to TOP exposure than adolescence.

The COVID-19 pandemic, promoted by the SARS-CoV-2 respiratory virus, has resulted in widespread global morbidity and mortality. The immune response against this pathogen has shown a thin line between protective effects and pathological reactions resulting from the massive release of cytokines and poor viral clearance. The latter is possibly caused by exhaustion, senescence, or both of TCD8+ cells and reduced activity of natural killer (NK) cells. The imbalance between innate and adaptive responses during the early stages of infection caused by SARS-CoV-2 contributes to the ineffective control of viral spread. The present study evaluated the tissue immunoexpression of the tissue biomarkers (Arginase-1, CCR4, CD3, CD4, CD8, CD20, CD57, CD68, CD138, IL-4, INF-α, INF-γ, iNOS, PD-1, Perforin and Sphingosine-1) to understand the cellular immune response triggered in patients who died of COVID-19. We evaluated twenty-four paraffin-embedded lung tissue samples from patients who died of COVID-19 (COVID-19 group) and compared them with ten lung tissue samples from patients who died of H1N1pdm09 (H1N1 group) with the immunohistochemical markers mentioned above. In addition, polymorphisms in the Perforin gene were genotyped through Real-Time PCR. Significantly increased tissue immunoexpression of Arginase, CD4, CD68, CD138, Perforin, Sphingosine-1, and IL-4 markers were observed in the COVID-19 group. A significantly lower immunoexpression of CD8 and CD57 was also found in this group. It is suggested that patients who died from COVID-19 had a poor cellular response concerning viral clearance and adaptive response going through tissue repair.

The present study determined whether treatment during childhood with topiramate (TPM), a new generation antiepileptic drug, results in altered aortic reactivity in adult male and female rats. We also sought to understand the role of endothelium-derived contractile factors in TPM-induced vascular dysfunction. Male and female Wistar rats were treated with TPM (41 mg/kg/day) or water (TPM vehicle) by gavage during childhood (postnatal day, 16-28). In adulthood, thoracic aorta reactivity to phenylephrine (phenyl), as well as aortic thickness and expression of cyclooxygenases (COX-1 and COX-2), NOX2, and p47 phox were evaluated. The aortic response to phenyl was increased in male and female rats from the TPM group when compared with the control group. In TPM male rats, the hyperreactivity to phenyl was abrogated by the inhibition of NADPH oxidase and COX-2, while in female rats, responses were restored only by inhibition of COX-2. In addition, TPM male rats presented aortic hypertrophy and increased expression of NOX-2 and p47phox, while TPM female rats showed increased COX-2 aortic expression. Taken together, for the first-time, the present study provides evidence that treatment with TPM during childhood causes vascular dysfunction in adulthood, and that the mechanism underlying the vascular effects of TPM is sex-specific., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Inc. Abstract: Paracetamol (PAR) is the most common over-the-counter drug recommended by physicians for treatment of pain and fever during gestation. This drug is not teratogenic, being considered safe for fetus; however, PAR crosses the blood-placental barrier. Considering that, the present study aimed to evaluate the vascular and metabolic safety of PAR exposure during intrauterine and neonatal development in adult male and female-exposed offspring. Wistar female rats were gavaged, with PAR (350 mg/kg/d), from gestational day 6-21 or from gestational day 6 until postnatal day 21. Control dams received water by gavage at the same periods. The male and female offspring were evaluated at adulthood (80 days of life). The thoracic aorta reactivity to acetylcholine, sodium nitroprusside, and phenylephrine was evaluated in male and female adult offspring. It was observed that aortic relaxation was similar between the PAR and control offspring. In addition, the contraction to phenylephrine was similar between the groups. Further, the insulin sensitivity, adipose tissue deposition and blood pressure were not different between PAR and control adult offspring. These results suggest that the protocol of PAR exposure used in the present study did not program vascular and metabolic alterations that would contribute to the development of cardiometabolic diseases in adult life, being safe for the exposed offspring., Competing Interests: The authors report no conflicts of interest., (Copyright © 2021 Wolters Kluwer Health, Inc. Paracetamol (PAR) is an over-the-counter medicine used as analgesic or antipyretic by 40-50% of the pregnant women in different countries. Epidemiologic studies have been associating maternal use of PAR with neurodevelopmental disruption and special attention has been given to its potential to increase the odds for neurodevelopmental disorders, such as attention-deficit hyperactive disorder and autism spectrum disorder. Population-based research do not allow the establishment of causal relationships because variable control is weak. We aimed to evaluate the potential of PAR to induce developmental neurotoxicity in rats. Pregnant Wistar rats were gavaged with PAR (350 mg/kg/day) or water from gestational day 6 until delivery. General toxicity endpoints included dams' body weight and food intake as well as pups' body weight until weaning. Behavioral evaluation occurred at post-natal days 10 (nest seeking test), 27 (behavioral stereotypy), 28 (three chamber sociability test and open field) and 29 (hot plate and elevated plus-maze). Moreover, lipid hidroperoxide (LOOH), reduced glutathione (GSH) and brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels were quantified in prefrontal cortex and hippocampus of 22-days-old rats. Gestational exposure to PAR impaired nest seeking behavior, augmented apomorphine-induced behavioral stereotypy and decreased rostral grooming in the elevated plus maze. Exposed female pups presented elevated vertical exploration in the open field test. No alterations were observed in LOOH, GSH or BDNF levels in the prefrontal cortex or hippocampus. Exposure regimen did not affect general toxicity parameters or pups' behavior in the hot plate and sociability tests. These data suggest PAR as a developmental neurotoxicant. The biguanide metformin (MET) has been used during pregnancy for treatment of polycystic ovary syndrome and gestational diabetes. MET crosses the placenta and maternal treatment can expose the progeny to this drug during important phases of body development. Direct vascular protective effects have been described with the treatment of metformin. Nevertheless, it is unclear whether intrauterine exposure to metformin is safe for the vascular system of offspring. Thus, the present study aimed to investigate the intrinsic effects of metformin exposure in utero in the offspring abdominal aorta reactivity, in the presence and absence of perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT) and endothelium. For this, Wistar rats were treated with metformin 293 mg/kg/day (MET) or water (CTR) by gavage during the gestational period. The abdominal aorta reactivity to phenylephrine, acetylcholine, and sodium nitroprusside was evaluated in male adult offspring. It was observed that abdominal aorta relaxation was similar between MET and CTR groups in the presence or absence of PVAT. In addition, the contraction to phenylephrine was similar between MET and CTR groups in the presence and absence of PVAT and endothelium. Therefore, metformin exposure during pregnancy had no intrinsic effect on the offspring abdominal aorta PVAT and endothelial function, demonstrating it to be safe to the vascular system of the offspring., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Inc. The aim of this study was to analyze muscle regeneration after cryoinjury in the tibialis anterior muscle of young rats that were malnourished and then recovered. Forty Wistar rats were divided into a nourished group that received a normal protein diet (14% casein) for 90 days and a malnourished and recovered rats group (MR) that was submitted to 45 days of malnutrition with a hypoproteic diet (6% casein) followed by 45 days of a normal protein diet (14% casein). After the recovery period, all of the animals underwent cryoinjury in the right tibialis anterior muscle and euthanasia after 7, 14 and 21 days. The amount of connective tissue and the inflammation area was higher in the malnutrition recovered injury MR group (MRI) at 14 days post-injury (p < 0.05). Additionally, the cross-sectional area (CSA) of the regenerated fibers was decreased in the MRI (p < 0.05). The MyoD and myogenin protein levels were higher in the nourished injury group. Similar levels of TGF-β1 were found between groups. The proposed malnutrition protocol was effective in showing delayed changes in the regeneration process of the tibialis anterior muscle of young rats. Furthermore, we observed a delay in muscle repair even after nutritional recovery.

Study Design: Case series., Background and Purpose: Scapular dyskinesis has been associated with several shoulder injuries. Recent literature has suggested that a greater activation of the scapular muscles can play an important role in reducing subacromial impingement in patients with shoulder pain. Thus, the purpose of this case series was to describe a rehabilitation program that emphasizes scapular dyskinesis correction for those with clinical evidence of subacromial pain syndrome., Case Descriptions: The four amateur athletes in this series showed clinical evidence of subacromial pain syndrome and scapular dyskinesis and each underwent a treatment protocol consisting of three phases. Phase 1 emphasized pain relief, scapular control, and recovery of normal range of motion (ROM), Phase 2 focused on muscular strengthening, and Phase 3 emphasized sensory motor training., Outcomes: All subjects demonstrated decreased pain, improved sports performance and function, increased muscular strength for shoulder elevation and external rotation, and increased ROM for internal rotation. Improvement in serratus anterior (SA) activation was also noted., Discussion: The results of this case series suggest that subjects with clinical tests positive for subacromial pain syndrome can show significant improvement with an intervention focused on scapular dyskinesis correction. SA activation can play an important role in this process given that all subjects presented with better recruitment after rehabilitation, as measured by electromyography., Levels of Evidence: Level 4.

Aims: Fluoxetine (FLX) is an antidepressant worldwide prescribed throughout life stages, including pregnancy and breastfeeding. Out of pregnancy, the combination of FLX with fish oil (FO) and folic acid (FA) is carried to enhance the therapeutic activity and reduce the side effects of the antidepressant. During pregnancy, FO and FA have been used to promote fetal development, and reduce, in mother, the risk of gestational and post-pregnancy depression. To evaluate if maternal exposure during pregnancy and lactation to FLX associated with FO or FA would prevent the antidepressant side effects in aorta reactivity and nitric oxide metabolites (NOx) plasmatic levels. We also sought to understand, in female offspring, the vascular effects of intrauterine and lactation exposure to FO and FA monotherapy., Main Methods: Wistar rats were treated with water (control group), FLX (5mg/kg/day), FO (1.3g/kg/day), FA (3mg/kg/day), FLX+FO and FLX+FA, throughout pregnancy and lactation. On adulthood, in female offspring were evaluated the vascular reactivity to phenylephrine (Phe), the NOx and homocysteine (HCY) plasmatic levels., Key Findings: The developmental exposure to the associations of FO or FA with FLX did not correct the aortic hyporreactivity and increased NOx levels induced by intrauterine and lactation exposure to FLX. Background: The Pilates method has been recommended to patients with low back pain, but the evidence on effectiveness is inconclusive. In addition, there is still no evidence for the cost-effectiveness of this method or for the ideal number of sessions to achieve the highest effectiveness., Objective: The aim of this study will be to investigate the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of the Pilates method with different weekly frequencies in the treatment of patients with nonspecific low back pain., Design: This is a randomized controlled trial with blinded assessor., Setting: This study will be conducted at a physical therapy clinic in São Paulo, Brazil., Participants: Two hundred ninety-six patients with nonspecific low back pain between the ages of 18 and 80 years will be assessed and randomly allocated to 4 groups (n=74 patients per group)., Intervention: All groups will receive an educational booklet. The booklet group will not receive additional exercises. Pilates group 1 will follow a Pilates-based program once a week, Pilates group 2 will follow the same program twice a week, and Pilates group 3 will follow the same program 3 times a week. The intervention will last 6 weeks., Measurements: A blinded assessor will evaluate pain, quality-adjusted life-years, general and specific disability, kinesiophobia, pain catastrophizing, and global perceived effect 6 weeks, 6 months, and 12 months after randomization., Limitations: Therapists and patients will not be blinded., Conclusions: This will be the first study to investigate different weekly frequencies of treatment sessions for nonspecific low back pain. Background: High blood pressure is associated with cardiovascular disease, which is the leading cause of mortality in the Brazilian population. Lifestyle changes, including physical activity, are important for lowering blood pressure levels and decreasing the costs associated with outcomes., Objective: Assess the impact of physical activity interventions on blood pressure in Brazilian individuals., Methods: Meta-analysis and systematic review of studies published until May 2014, retrieved from several health sciences databases. Seven studies with 493 participants were included. The analysis included parallel studies of physical activity interventions in adult populations in Brazil with a description of blood pressure (mmHg) before and after the intervention in the control and intervention groups., Results: Of 390 retrieved studies, eight matched the proposed inclusion criteria for the systematic review and seven randomized clinical trials were included in the meta-analysis. Physical activity interventions included aerobic and resistance exercises. There was a reduction of -10.09 (95% CI: -18.76 to -1.43 mmHg) in the systolic and -7.47 (95% CI: -11.30 to -3.63 mmHg) in the diastolic blood pressure., Conclusions: Available evidence on the effects of physical activity on blood pressure in the Brazilian population shows a homogeneous and significant effect at both systolic and diastolic blood pressures. However, the strength of the included studies was low and the methodological quality was also low and/or regular. Larger studies with more rigorous methodology are necessary to build robust evidence.

Background: Chronic low back pain is one of the four most common diseases in the world with great socioeconomic impact. Supervised exercise therapy is one of the treatments suggested for this condition; however, the recommendation on the best type of exercise is still unclear. The Pilates method of exercise is effective in reducing pain and disability in these patients, as well as the analgesia promoted by interferential current. Currently, the literature lacks information on the efficacy of the association of these two techniques in the short- and medium-term than performing one of the techniques isolated. The objective of this study will be to evaluate the efficacy of adding interferential current to the Pilates method exercises for the treatment of patients with chronic nonspecific low back pain in the short- and medium-term., Methods/design: This study will be a randomized controlled trial with two arms and blinded evaluator, conducted at an outpatient Physical Therapy Department in Brazil. Patients with nonspecific chronic low back pain and pain equal to or greater than 3 in the Pain Numerical Rating Scale (0/10) will be randomly assigned to one of two groups: Group with active interferential current + Pilates (n = 74) will be submitted to the active interferential current associated to the modified Pilates exercises, and Group with sham interferential current + Pilates (n = 74) will be submitted to the sham interferential current associated with the modified Pilates exercises during 18 sessions. The outcomes pain intensity, pressure pain threshold, general and specific disability, global perceived effect and kinesiophobia will be evaluated by a blinded assessor at baseline, six weeks and six months after randomization., Discussion: Because of the study design, blinding of the participants and the therapists involved in the study will not be possible. The results of this study could contribute to the process of clinical decision- making for the improvement of pain and disability in participants with nonspecific chronic low back pain., Trial Registration: ClinicalTrials.gov NCT01919268.

Context and Objective: Osteoporosis is a skeletal disorder characterized by low bone mineral density (BMD). Studies have shown that some of the genetic components relating to lower BMD may be detected by polymorphisms. Our aim was to evaluate the frequencies of interleukin-6, GST and progesterone receptor gene polymorphisms in postmenopausal women with low BMD., Design and Setting: Cross-sectional study, conducted in a public university in São Paulo, Brazil., Methods: We evaluated interleukin-6 (IL-6), progesterone receptor gene (PROGINS) and glutathione S-transferase (GST) polymorphisms in 110 postmenopausal women with no previous use of hormone therapy. Tests were performed using DNA-PCR, from oral scrapings. We used Student's t-test and a logistic regression model for statistical analysis., Results: Regarding IL-6 polymorphism, 58.2% of the patients were homozygotes (GG) and 41.8% had allele C (heterozygote or mutant homozygote + GC or CC). PROGINS genotype polymorphism was absent in 79% (wild homozygote or P1/P1) and present in 20.9% (heterozygote or P1/P2). Regarding GSTM1 polymorphism, the allele (1/1) was present in 72.7% of the patients and was absent in 27.3%. We found that IL-6 polymorphism had statistically significant correlations with the L2-L4 T-score (P = 0.032) and with BMD (P = 0.005). Women with IL-6 polymorphism were 2.3 times more likely to have a L2-L4 T-score of less than -1, compared with those not presenting this polymorphism., Conclusion: IL-6 gene polymorphism was correlated with low BMD, whereas the PROGINS and GSTM1 polymorphisms did not show any correlation.

Objective: This study evaluates the effect of intravaginal estriol on urogenital atrophy, Pap smear parameters, colposcopy parameters and discomfort during gynecological examination., Methods: 31 postmenopausal women who had not used hormone therapy in the previous six months were studied. All women used intravaginal estriol, 1 mg/day for 21 days. The following variables were analyzed before and after treatment: complaints of urogenital atrophy; cytological parameters, colposcopic parameters, and subjective evaluation of discomfort during gynecologic examination., Results: All urogenital atrophy complaints improved after treatment. At the first visit, 45.2% of women presented a predominance of profound cells, 51.6% with predominance of intermediate cells, and 3.2% with predominance of superficial cells. At the second visit, these rates were 35.5%, 64.5%, and 0%, respectively. Evaluation of the maturation index showed that 83.9% of women had atrophic Pap smears, and 16.1% showed good estrogenic level before treatment. At the second visit, atrophic smears occurred in 12.9%, and 87.1% of women exhibited good estrogenic level (chi2 = 20.045; p = 0.000). Colposcopy showed that 71% of women had atrophic colpitis and/or petequiae before treatment, while atrophy after therapy was present in only 6.4%. The evaluation of other colposcopic parameters also improved after treatment. Great discomfort was reported by 19.4% before and by 0% after treatment., Conclusion: Intravaginal estriol 1 mg/day for a period of 21 days was efficient in improving urogenital atrophy, Pap smear parameters and colposcopic evaluation in postmenopausal women.
