Humans ,Reproducibility of Results ,Morals - Abstract
We present the data from a crowdsourced project seeking to replicate findings in independent laboratories before (rather than after) they are published. In this Pre-Publication Independent Replication (PPIR) initiative, 25 research groups attempted to replicate 10 moral judgment effects from a single laboratory's research pipeline of unpublished findings. The 10 effects were investigated using online/lab surveys containing psychological manipulations (vignettes) followed by questionnaires. Results revealed a mix of reliable, unreliable, and culturally moderated findings. Unlike any previous replication project, this dataset includes the data from not only the replications but also from the original studies, creating a unique corpus that researchers can use to better understand reproducibility and irreproducibility in science.

This crowdsourced project introduces a collaborative approach to improving the reproducibility of scientific research, in which findings are replicated in qualified independent laboratories before (rather than after) they are published. Our goal is to establish a non-adversarial replication process with highly informative final results. To illustrate the Pre-Publication Independent Replication (PPIR) approach, 25 research groups conducted replications of all ten moral judgment effects which the last author and his collaborators had “in the pipeline” as of August 2014. Six findings replicated according to all replication criteria, one finding replicated but with a significantly smaller effect size than the original, one finding replicated consistently in the original culture but not outside of it, and two findings failed to find support. In total, 40% of the original findings failed at least one major replication criterion. Potential ways to implement and incentivize pre-publication independent replication on a large scale are discussed.

Physics - Physics and Society ,Computer Science - Digital Libraries - Abstract
An academic scientist's professional success depends on publishing. Publishing norms emphasize novel, positive results. As such, disciplinary incentives encourage design, analysis, and reporting decisions that elicit positive results and ignore negative results. Prior reports demonstrate how these incentives inflate the rate of false effects in published science. When incentives favor novelty over replication, false results persist in the literature unchallenged, reducing efficiency in knowledge accumulation. Previous suggestions to address this problem are unlikely to be effective. For example, a journal of negative results publishes otherwise unpublishable reports. This enshrines the low status of the journal and its content. The persistence of false findings can be meliorated with strategies that make the fundamental but abstract accuracy motive - getting it right - competitive with the more tangible and concrete incentive - getting it published. We develop strategies for improving scientific practices and knowledge accumulation that account for ordinary human motivations and self-serving biases., Comment: 41 pages, 1 table

- Abstract
We will recruit 500 participants from Amazon's Mechanical Turk. Exclusion Criteria: We will exclude any participants who fail the 1 item attention check. We will delete any repeat IP addresses. Analysis plan: See attached syntax for how variables will be created. 1. We hypothesize that Manichaeism will predict social distance differences between liberals and conservatives, even after controlling for ideology. Testing Hypothesis 1: We will run a linear regression with ideological manichaeism predicting ideologically continuous social distance, liberal social distance and conservative social distance. We will run a step-wise linear regression with ideology entered at the first step and Manichaeism at the second step predicting ideologically continuous social distance, liberal social distance, and conservative social distance. 2. We hypothesize that Manichaeism will predict social distance differences between ingroups and outgroups, even after controlling for ideological extremity. Testing Hypothesis 2: We will run a linear regression with manichaeism extremity predicting ingroup social distance, outgroup social distance and the difference between ingroup and outgroup social distance social distance. We will run a step-wise linear regression with ideological extremity entered at the first step and Manichaeism extremity at the second step predicting ingroup social distance, outgroup social distance, and the difference between ingroup and outgroup social distance. 3. We hypothesize that Manichaeism will predict outgroup distancing more than ingroup closeness. Testing Hypothesis 3: We will test whether the correlation between Manichaeism and ingroup closeness is smaller than the correlation between outgroup closeness and Manichaeism. 4. We hypothesize that Right Wing Authoritarianism and Social Dominance Orientation will predict preference for conservative over liberal closeness, but that this relationship will be explained by ideology. We will run a linear regression with SDO/RWA predicting ideologically continuous social distance, liberal social distance and conservative social distance. We will run a step-wise linear regression with ideology entered at the first step and SDO/ RWA at the second step predicting ideologically continuous social distance, liberal social distance, and conservative social distance. 5.We hypothesize that RWA and SDO will not predict ingroup or outgroup social distance or liberal conservative intergroup social distance differences. Testing Hypothesis 5: We will run a linear regression with SDO/RWA predicting ingroup social distance, outgroup social distance, and the difference between ingroup and outgroup social distance.

16. Manichaeism Study 2

- Abstract
In Study 2, we also tested whether Manichaeism scores would predict intergroup dependent measures that occur more frequently in daily life such as willingness to have a partisan individual in a close social environment or sit near them on a bench. Additionally, prior research has shown that negative attitudes toward an outgroup is independent from ingroup support (Brewer, 1999). We sought to test whether high Manichaeism extremity predicts ingroup closeness, outgroup distancing or both. Finally, typical ideology measures are only able to identify ingroup and outgroup perceptions for individuals who indicate conservative or liberal ideological leaning. For the increasing number of individuals who do not identify with particular parties (Gallup, 2015) or do not feel represented by their ideological group (Johnson et al., 2014; xxxcitation), this method of identifying ingroups and outgroups can become less meaningful when attempting to predict important intergroup outcomes. Our scale provides a way to measure intergroup perception biases without requiring that individuals identify with a particular group. This can help to avoid desirability biases which could affect self report as well as issues where individuals feel strongly about their own ideological position but believe that those associated with their ideological group are not representative. To this end, we hypothesize that Manichaeism scores will be predictive of intergroup perceptions and outcomes for both partisan and nonpartisan identifying individuals. We also hypothesize that using participants’ scores on the ideological Manichaeism measure to identify ingroups and outgroups will more strongly predict closeness perceptions and preferences than ideological identification regardless of partisan ideological identification.

22. Researcher Rationales for not Using Proposed Reforms to Research Practices (PRRPs)

- Abstract
In response to the “replication crisis” many psychologists recommended that the field adopt several proposed reforms to research practices (PRRPs), like preregistration, to make research more replicable. However, reception of PRRPs is not well known. We wanted to know the rationales researchers had for not using them. We analyzed data of 1,035 researchers in social and personality psychology from Motyl et al. (2017) who asked them to explain when they thought it was acceptable to not use four specific PRRPs: preregistering hypotheses/methods, making data publicly available online, conducting formal power analyses, and reporting effect sizes. Our results suggest that (a) adoption and use of PRRPs is quite varied and (b) rationales for not using them reflect a need for more discussion and education about the utility and feasibility of the proposed reforms.

- Abstract
If a new facility is proposed that is risky for nearby residents but beneficial to the community at large, such as a methadone clinic, nearby residents nonetheless tend to respond with a resounding “Not In My Back Yard!” (NIMBY; Bachrach and Zautra, 1985; Kraft and Clary, 1991; Marks and von Winterfeldt, 1984; cf. Wolsink, 2006). NIMBY responses often result in the indefinite suspension of projects that could result in many more people benefiting from the facility than there are people placed at typically low levels of risk (e.g., Glaberson, 1988). Perhaps to avoid this conflict, decision-makers often site risky facilities in neighborhoods that are least likely to be in a position to effectively protest their placement (Been, 1993). The result has been the overburdening of poor neighborhoods and/or neighborhoods of color with risky facilities when they are managed to be built (e.g., Austin and Schill, 1991) as well as lower levels of certain kinds of vital services (e.g., hazardous waste treatment facilities; Portney, 1984). Therefore, a better understanding of the underlying motivations behind NIMBYism might point toward strategies to alleviate both of the above problems. This study will attempt to understand the motivational underpinnings of NIMBYism through the lens of outcome fairness.

We hypothesize that Manichaeism will predict social distance differences between ingroups and outgroups, even after controlling for ideological extremity. 3. We hypothesize that Manichaeism will predict outgroup distancing more than ingroup closeness. 4. We hypothesize that Right Wing Authoritarianism and Social Dominance Orientation will predict preference for conservative over liberal closeness, but that this relationship will be explained by ideology. 5.We hypothesize that RWA and SDO will not predict ingroup or outgroup social distance or liberal conservative intergroup social distance differences.

- Abstract
Research suggests that belief in conspiracy theories (CT) stems from basic psychological mechanisms and is linked to other belief systems (e.g. religious beliefs). While previous research has extensively examined individual and contextual variables associated with CT beliefs, it has not yet investigated the role of culture. In the current research, we tested, based on a situated cultural cognition perspective, the extent to which culture predicts CT beliefs. Using Hofstede’s model of cultural values, three nation-level analyses of data from 25,19 and 18 countries using different measures of CT beliefs (Study 1, N = 5,323; Study 2a, N= 12,255; Study 2b, N = 30,994) revealed positive associations between Masculinity, Collectivism and CT beliefs. A cross-sectional study among US citizens (Study 3, N= 350), using individual-level measures of Hofstede’s values, replicated these findings. A meta-analysis of correlations across studies corroborated the presence of positive links between CT beliefs, Collectivism, r=.31, 95%CI=[.15; .47] and Masculinity, , r=.39, 95%CI=[.18; .59]. Our results suggest that in addition to individual-differences and contextual variables, cultural factors also play an important role in shapingCT beliefs.

The relationships between subjective status and perceived legitimacy are important for understanding the extent to which people with low status are complicit in their oppression. We use novel data from 66 samples and 30 countries (N = 12,788) and find that people with higher status see the social system as more legitimate than those with lower status, but there is variation across people and countries. The association between subjective status and perceived legitimacy was never negative at any levels of eight moderator variables, although the positive association was sometimes reduced. Although not always consistent with hypotheses, group identification, selfesteem, and beliefs in social mobility were all associated with perceived legitimacy among people who have low subjective status. These findings enrich our understanding of the relationship between social status and legitimacy., Center for Intercultural and Indigenous Research 15110006, H2020 European Research Council 759320, Center for Social Conflict and Cohesion Studies 15130009, Comision Nacional de Investigacion Cientifica y Tecnologica (CONICYT) CONICYT FONDECYT 1161371, Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness PSI2016-79971-P, Grant Agency of the Czech Republic 20-01214S, Institute of Psychology, Czech Academy of Sciences RVO: 68081740

- Abstract
The relationships between subjective status and perceived legitimacy are important for understanding the extent to which people with low status are complicit in their oppression. We use novel data from 66 samples and 30 countries (N = 12,788) and find that people with higher status see the social system as more legitimate than those with lower status, but there is variation across people and countries. The association between subject status and perceived legitimacy was never negative at any levels of eight moderator variables, although the positive association was sometimes reduced. Although not always consistent with hypotheses, group identification, self‐esteem, and beliefs in social mobility were all associated with perceived legitimacy among people who have low subjective status. These findings enrich our understanding of the relationship between social status and legitimacy.
