Black carbon (BC) plays an important role in the climate system because of its strong warming effect, yet the magnitude of this effect is highly uncertain owing to the complex mixing state of aerosols. Here we build a unified theoretical framework to describe BC's mixing states, linking dynamic processes to BC coating thickness distribution, and show its self-similarity for sites in diverse environments. The size distribution of BC-containing particles is found to follow a universal law and is independent of BC core size. A new mixing state module is established based on this finding and successfully applied in global and regional models, which increases the accuracy of aerosol climate effect estimations. Our theoretical framework links observations with model simulations in both mixing state description and light absorption quantification.

East Asia is the strongest global source region for anthropogenic black carbon (BC), the most important light-absorbing aerosol contributing to direct radiative climate forcing. To provide extended observational constraints on regional BC distributions and impacts, in situ measurements of BC were obtained with a single particle soot photometer during the May/June 2016 Korean-United States Air Quality aircraft campaign (KORUS-AQ) in South Korea. Unique chemical tracer relationships were associated with BC sourced from different regions. The extent and variability in vertical BC mass burden for 48 profiles over a single site near Seoul were investigated using back trajectory and chemical tracer analysis. Meteorologically driven changes in transport influenced the relative importance of different source regions, impacting observed BC loadings at all altitudes. Internal mixing and size distributions of BC further demonstrated dependence on source region: BC attributed to China had a larger mass median diameter (180 ± 13 nm) than BC attributed to South Korea (152 ± 25 nm), and BC associated with long-range transport was less thickly coated (60 ± 4 nm) than that sourced from South Korea (75 ± 16 nm). The column BC direct radiative effect at the top of the atmosphere was estimated to be 1.0+0.90.5 W/m2, with average values for different meteorological periods varying by a factor of 2 due to changes in the BC vertical profile. During the campaign, BC sourced from South Korea (≤ 31%), China (22%), and Russia (14%) were the most significant single-region contributors to the column direct radiative effect.

Water-insoluble aerosol particles (WIAPs), such as black carbon (BC), mineral dust, and primary biological aerosol particles (PBAPs), affect climate through their interaction with radiation and clouds. However, with the exception of BC, methods to identify WIAP types and quantify their number concentrations are limited. Here, we evaluated a method that has been recently developed to measure the number concentrations of submicron WIAPs based on atmospheric aerosol measurements at an urban site in Nagoya, Japan. In this method, atmospheric aerosol particles are collected on a filter and dispersed in water. Then, the complex forward-scattering amplitudes of individual particles are measured. This complex parameter reflects the complex refractive index, volume, and shape of each measured particle, enabling the characterization of these physical properties from the signals. The WIAPs were classified as BC-like, dust-like, and PBAP-like particles based on their complex amplitude data. The number concentrations of BC-like particles were strongly correlated with those of refractory BC particles measured by a Single Particle Soot Photometer. BC-like and dust-like particles dominated the population of the submicron WIAPs, which was also confirmed using electron microscopy and Wideband Integrated Bioaerosol Sensor observations. Under the observed atmospheric conditions, the number concentrations of WIAPs were measured with their dispersion efficiency from a filter to water of approximately 50%. These results indicate that our method based on filter sampling and complex forward-scattering amplitude measurements has the potential to become a new technique for quantifying the spatio-temporal distributions of WIAPs. Here, we used a modified single-particle soot photometer (SP2) coupled with a concentric pneumatic nebulizer to measure the size-resolved number and mass concentrations of light-absorbing iron oxide aerosols (FeOx) in liquid water (CNFeOx and CMFeOx, respectively). The SP2 could selectively detect individual FeOx particles in mixed wüstite–fullerene soot laboratory samples and melted Arctic snow samples. The nebulizer efficiency for FeOx particles was about 50% within the 70–650 nm diameter range, as derived from the ratio of the volume of ammonium sulfate before and after extraction by the nebulizer and the size-resolved transmission efficiency in the nebulizer–SP2 sampling line. Uncertainty from the boundary lines empirically drawn to discriminate the scatterplots of FeOx and black carbon in the mixed wüstite–fullerene soot suspensions and snow samples was approximately 3.0% and 10%, respectively. Overall uncertainty in total CNFeOx and CMFeOx (220–1400 nm) was approximately 19% and 18%, respectively. After storage at 4 °C for 16 months, the FeOx particle size distributions in melted Arctic snow had remained stable, and CNFeOx and CMFeOx had changed by less than 19% and 1.0%, on average, respectively. Most of the FeOx on dust particles measured by this system was estimated to be in the diameter range smaller than 1000 nm, considering the nebulizer efficiency for dust particles. The high accuracy of the CNFeOx and CMFeOx measurements will help to improve our quantitative understanding of the wet deposition of FeOx and provide more accurate estimates of the effects of FeOx on snow surface albedo. During the PAMARCMiP 2018 campaign (March and April 2018) a proton-transfer-reaction mass spectrometer (PTR-MS) was deployed onboard the POLAR 5 research aircraft and sampled the high Arctic atmosphere under Arctic haze conditions. More than 100 compounds exhibited levels above 1 pmol/mol in at least 25% of the measurements. We used back trajectories and acetone mixing ratios to identify periods with and without long-range transport from continental sources. Air masses with continental influence contained elevated levels of compounds associated with aged biogenic emissions and anthropogenic pollution (e.g., methanol, peroxyacetylnitrate (PAN), acetone, acetic acid, methylethylketone (MEK), proprionic acid, and pentanone). Almost half of all positively detected compounds (>100) in the High Arctic atmosphere can be associated with terpene oxidation products. This may constitute a signature of biogenic terpenes and their oxidation products on the high Arctic atmosphere. Many of these compounds will condense and produce biogenic secondary organic aerosol (SOA) - a natural source of organic aerosol (OA) in addition to the aerosols that can be associated with pollution. Therefore, we hypothesize that biogenic SOA may have exerted significant control over the complex system of aerosols, clouds and longwave radiation in the pre-industrial Arctic winter, even though their role is likely marginal under contemporary polluted Arctic haze conditions. However, biogenic SOA may become an important 40 factor in the futRure again, if biogenic emissions are enhanced due to climate change and if polluting technologies are phased out in the future. During two flights, surface ozone depletion events (ODE) were observed that coincided with enhanced levels of acetone, and methylethylketone. There is evidence that ODEs may also be associated with the emission of biogenic ice-nucleating particles (INP) because the filter samples taken during these two flights exhibited enhanced levels of highly active INP. Both these processes, INP production in association with ozone depletion events, and the transport of biogenic SOA could require corrections in estimates of Arctic change. If the preindustrial effects from these natural factors was stronger than is thought, subsequent climate changes over the Arctic may be larger than currently assumed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
