The ten chapters of this book address sexuality issues in the lives of school age individuals who are deaf-blind or significantly developmentally delayed. It notes that these individuals usually do not experience sexuality through typical relationships and thus require a different type of instruction. Chapters have the following titles: (1) "Introduction to Sexuality Education for Individuals Who Are Deaf-Blind and Significantly Developmentally Delayed"; (2) "Sex Education: It Is Never Too Early To Start with a Child Who Is Deaf-Blind"; (3) "Developing a Process for Intervention and Instruction"; (4) "Modesty"; (5) "Appropriate Touch and Personal Boundaries"; (6) "Menstruation"; (7) "Masturbation"; (8) "Sexual Health Care"; (9) "Sexual Abuse". The final chapter is an annotated bibliography of resources and readings related to sexuality education. (DB)

This guide is intended to help individuals with deaf-blindness or other severe disabilities and the people involved with them to plan positive futures. An introduction notes that Personal Futures Planning is different from other planning meetings in that all participants are there voluntarily, there are no rules, and the planning is done "with" the individual and family, instead of "for" them. This planning philosophy tries to involve all the significant people influencing an individual's life and focuses on the individual's preferences and strengths, rather than his/her problems or disabilities. The basic steps of an effective planning process are enumerated as are components of the planning process: designing the planning process, building a personal profile, the planning meeting, and creating a future over time. Additional guidelines are given for forming the on-going group and for building a personal profile. A sample "map" of an individual's past and present is attached. Another sample "map" illustrates an individual's relationships. Examples of ways to identify the individual's preferences and images of the future are also illustrated.
