Twenty U.S. states permit the indefinite detention of civilly committed sex offenders after the end of their prison sentences if their dangerousness is due to a “mental abnormality.” This article explores the origins of one such law by examining its predecessor, the Minnesota Psychopathic Personality Act of 1939. Passed in the wake of a panic over sex crimes and upheld by the Supreme Court in 1940, Minnesota’s psychopath statute extended a 1917 eugenics law providing for the compulsory civil commitment and institutionalization of “defectives” to persons alleged to have a psychopathic personality. Analyzing the 1917 and 1939 laws together shows how one state’s psychopath statute had less to do with psychiatric authority than with the legal and administrative framework established by Progressive-era eugenics. From the 1910s until today, dubious claims about the ability of science to identify potential criminals legitimized politically popular, but constitutionally questionable, forms of administrative and social control.

- Abstract
The article identifies and analyzes fourteen Crucified carved by the sculptor Manuel Martín Nieto, a native and established in Morón de la Frontera, in the province of Seville, in the first two decades of the 21 ST century. These sculptures form a wide series, hitherto unpublished in the artistic bibliography, in which the creative keys and the artistic evolution of the author can be deduced. Likewise, it must be considered that at least six of these representations are among the key works of Andalusia religious production of that period, so it is necessary to make them known by making the appropriate appraisals., El artículo identifica y analiza los catorce Crucificados de tamaño natural tallados por el escultor Manuel Martín Nieto, natural y establecido en Morón de la Frontera, en la provincia de Sevilla, en el período comprendido entre los años 2000 y 2020.

At the beginning of the Cold War, the United States established military bases at various points around the globe to counter Soviet influence. The construction of these bases was an unprecedented undertaking because its scope. In Spain, an extensive network of military installations was built throughout the country in only 5 years. The main nuclei of this network were the bases of Torrejon, Zaragoza, Moron, and Rota. This article aims to show that these bases share a common design project which implements an underlying grid-like system in the organization of their masterplans. After detailed study of the Torrejon air base, we aim to demonstrate that this grid-like system was conceived as a sophisticated and precise graphic tool able to facilitate the design, construction, and maintenance of the bases, as well as to back an ideological project.

Regarding the early history of laser, it is generally accepted that the technique of retinal light photocoagulation was first pioneered by Gerd Meyer-Schwickerath in 1949. The renowned German ophthalmologist developed the technique to obtain clinically useful results and is worldwide considered the father of retinal photocoagulation. Nevertheless, we believe that the Spanish ophthalmologist Jose Moron (Seville, 1918-2000) was really the author of the first known experience of therapeutic photocoagulation of the retina, because he had previously used a similar technique in rabbit and human eyes in 1945 and 1946, respectively. These experiences already appeared in his doctoral dissertation, which was defended in Madrid in 1946, almost three years before the pioneering presentation of Meyer-Schwickerath. Despite this, Moron was permanently forgotten in the history of retinal photocoagulation. We would like to highlight his earlier experimental studies and reclaim the figure of this Spanish ophthalmologist, which deserves international recognition. This case is an example of a common phenomenon that inventors of new ideas are often not cited appropriately.

The authors wish to acknowledge IAGPDS and IGN for the availability of the seismic dataset. We are especially grateful to Benito Martin (IAGPDS) for his help and advice with the SEISAN and GMT public programs. This work has been partially supported by the RNM104 and RNM194-Research Groups belonging to Junta de Andalucia (Spain). They also received financial support through Spanish National Project No. PID2019-109608GB-I00 and Junta de Andalucia Project No. A-RNM-421-UGR18., We propose the use of entropy, H, as an indicator of the equilibrium state of a seismically active region (seismic system). The relationship between an increase in H and the occurrence of a great earthquake in a study area can be predicted by acknowledging the irreversible transition of a system. From this point of view, the seismic system evolves from an unstable initial state (due to external stresses) to another, where the stresses have dropped after the earthquake occurred. It is an irreversible transition that entails an increase in entropy. Five seismic episodes were analyzed in the south of the Iberian Peninsula, the Alboran Sea (Mediterranean Sea), and the North of Morocco: two of them of moderate-high magnitude (Al Hoceima, 2004 and 2016) and three of them of moderate-low magnitude (Adra, 1993-1994; Moron, 2007; and Torreperogil, 2012-2013). The results are remarkably in line with the theoretical forecasts; in other words: an earthquake, understood as an irreversible transition, must suppose an increase in entropy., Research Groups belonging to Junta de Andalucia (Spain) RNM104 RNM194, Spanish National Project PID2019-109608GB-I00, Junta de Andalucia A-RNM-421-UGR18

When disorders fade into normality, how can the threshold between normality and disorder be determined? In considering mild intellectual disability, I argue that economic factors partly determine thresholds. We tend to assume that the relationship between disorder, need and services is such that: first, a cut-off point between the disordered and the normal is determined; second, a needy population is identified; and third, resources are found (or at least should be found) to meet this need. However, the changing definitions of intellectual disability can best be understood if we think of this happening in reverse. That is, first, certain resources are thought obtainable, and then a cut-off point for disorder is selected which supplies an appropriately sized ‘needy population’. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Geophysical field data are used to identify the Xar Moron fault and structural differences on both sides are contrasted, the density in the horizontal and vertical directions is discussed. Based on the analysis of rock geochemistry, the sources of volcanic magma are discussed. The results show that: (1) the Xar Moron fault is a suture which has obvious differences in the crustal structures on both sides. (2) Volcanic rocks on the ground are distinguished by high potassium calcium alkaline series and their magmatic source is a mixture of crust and mantle source.

We present an annotated catalogue for the tribe Incini (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Cetoniinae) including references to all taxonomic and nomenclatural acts, clarifying the spelling of names, providing type depositories and occurrence records for the species. The spelling of Golinca davisii (Waterhouse, 1877) is fixed, and the incorrect subsequent spelling Pantodinus klugi Burmeister, 1847 is preserved. A comprehensive list of all valid names in Incini is provided. Furthermore, we describe the third species in the genus Archedinus Morón & Krikken, 1990, and first one known from outside of Mexico, A. antoshkai Seidel & Arriaga-Varela sp. nov. from Cerro las Minas, the highest mountain in Honduras. We provide an updated determination key for the species of Archedinus. The new species is compared with Archedinus howdeni Morón & Vaz-de-Mello, 2007, the most similar species in terms of genital and habitus morphology. An updated key to identification of males of Archedinus is provided.

Works contracts are a cornerstone for understanding the History of the construction. Although rares, works contracts treasure an enormous flow information, which is why this documental type has become an object of desire for many specialists interested in this emerging line of research. In this time we approach an excellent copy dating to the mid- sixteenth century from Moron de la Frontera and which was drafted on the occasion of the construction of the butcheries of IV Count of Ureña in the village. Far from any conceptual or methodological pretension, this paper presents an informative profile that want to put the document in context and so provide the reader with the correct apprehension.

This discussion considers recent historical works of eugenics and sterilization in Canada, but it is not an historiographic review essay or critique per se of this literature. Rather, by focussing on the topic of historic diagnostic categories such as “feeble-minded,” “idiot,” and “moron,” methodological issues such as historical presentism and its possible interactions with the discourse of modern bioethics are examined. The conclusions derived are meant only to be cautionary, and are neither prescriptive nor proscriptive. Medical historians undertaking analyses of currently contentious topics that may directly involve or indirectly allude to “human subjects” or “vulnerable populations” perhaps ought to reflect on the degree, if any, they may be anachronistically writing contemporary bioethical categories into bygone eras.

The present review studies Jorge Monteleone’s El centro de la tierra (Reading and Childhood), where moving autobiographical stories are threaded with reflections on the brightness of contact with the cosmos of books in childhood. It is a book that in its first part traces the links that the author intends to uncover between childhood and reading, and then focuses on the memories of the author’s childhood between the 1950s and 1960s , the vivacity of what was felt by accessing his father’s small library or by playing with his cousin Hugo in the courtyard of his grandparents in the town of Morón. In the book reverberates both the instant return of the first readings as discovery and enabling it to occur again and the impossibility of reaching it fully. As a whole, it is an inescapable book, either to study the historical construction of children, the history of books and magazines (and publishing houses) for children in Argentina since the second half of the twentieth century, to elucidate child care practices from reading or to ask about such issues in the contemporary scene. Monteleone, J. (2018).

Viveza criolla, vivo and boludo are three interrelated cultural keywords in Porteno Spanish, the variety of Spanish spoken in Buenos Aires, Argentina. They have been loosely translated as “native wit and cunning”, “clever, vivacious” and “moron”, respectively. However, these translations fail to capture the exact meanings and implied logic that guide Portenos—the residents of Buenos Aires—when they use these words. In this paper, I first look at the historical context that saw the emergence of viveza criolla in Buenos Aires, pointing out its link to local criollo culture. Then, I study how the three words have been defined in a varied sample of monolingual and bilingual dictionaries. I claim that, besides issues of ethnocentric framing and circularity, viveza is not sufficiently described as an expression of local culture and sociality, and neither vivo nor boludo are appropriately captured as social categories. Finally, I use the Natural Semantic Metalanguage approach to capture and explore the keywords’ meanings in simple, cross-translatable terms. Semantic explications are supported with discursive evidence from common sayings, fixed expressions, news articles, tango lyrics and tweets.

CYRIL Scott produced five volumes all on the same subject. They are The Way of the Childish (1916); Childishness: A Study in Adult Conduct (1930) , Man is my Theme (1939), The Rhymed Reflections of a Ruthless Rhymer (unpublished but completed c . 1943–4) and finally Man the Unruly Child (1953). In addition to these five books, there is another one to be considered: The Real Tolerance . The question arises as to what induced him to repeat the same basic premise for almost forty years? The answer could be he was so aware that the problems he pointed out in the first book had been totally ignored, as had his suggestions for resolving them; perhaps he saw himself as a present-day prophet crying in the wilderness, compelled to proclaim his warnings even though his audience was heedless to them. Despite the devastation and horrors of World War 1, adults, Scott insisted, continued to behave like children. Could a post-war generation do better? The basic argument never alters. It can be summed up in a passage from The Way of the Childish : Mankind has never grown up. With few exceptions, lost like needles in haystacks, the world is peopled by millions of souls who, despite their age and stature, behave like children in the nursery. The only difference is that, whereas the nursery behaviour of children may be on a small and comparatively harmless scale, the nursery behaviour of mankind is on an extensive and devastating one. Scott published a number of books anonymously and sometimes a little detective work is needed to ascertain if he is the author. For instance, The Way of the Childish appears to have been written by Shri Âdvaitâchârya, but on the flyleaf below the title in smaller letters we find: ‘Written down by the author of The Real Tolerance ’. Five years later, in 1921, it ran to a second edition, but this time the flyleaf read ‘Written down by the author of The Initiate ’. Clearly both books were written by Cyril Scott. The Way of the Childish is significant because it is the first notice we have of Scott's interest in theosophy. He explains that the book had been dictated to him and states: ‘The great Initiates, known as “Masters” in the Theosophical literature, instruct their pupils mostly from another plane but there are lesser Initiates who instruct them by word of mouth.’

The genus Paraburkholderia encompasses mostly environmental isolates with diverse predicted lifestyles. Genome analyses have shown that bacteriophages form a considerable portion of some Paraburkholderia genomes. Here, we analyzed the evolutionary history of prophages across all Paraburkholderia spp. Specifically, we investigated to what extent the presence of prophages and their distribution affect the diversity/diversification of Paraburkholderia spp., as well as to what extent phages coevolved with their respective hosts. Particular attention was given to the presence of CRISPR-Cas arrays as a reflection of past interactions with phages. We thus analyzed 36 genomes of Paraburkholderia spp., including those of 11 new strains, next to those of three Burkholderia species. Most genomes were found to contain at least one full prophage sequence. The highest number was found in Paraburkholderia sp. strain MF2-27; the nine prophages found amount to up to 4% of its genome. Among all prophages, potential moron genes (e.g., DNA adenine methylase) were found that might be advantageous for host cell fitness. Co-phylogenetic analyses indicated the existence of complex evolutionary scenarios between the different Paraburkholderia hosts and their prophages, including short-term co-speciation, duplication, host-switching and phage loss events. Analysis of the CRISPR-Cas systems showed a record of diverse, potentially recent, phage infections. We conclude that, overall, different phages have interacted in diverse ways with their Paraburkholderia hosts over evolutionary time.

This paper presents an unknown work by the painter Ignacio de Ríes, artist of the Sevillian School of the first half of the 17th century. It is the Immaculate Conception that is located in the current dependencies of the Brotherhood of the Holy Christ of the Expiration in Morón de la Frontera (Seville). These dependencies were the former headquarters of the church of the Society of Jesus School in that town.

During the 20th century numerous solutions for reinforcing wood sub-floors with concrete slabs and frameworks were introduced with the aim of remedying malfunctions due to rheological reasons or the deterioration of some of the components. In certain cases, however, these solutions created an excessive load, and as time went by they aggravated the original pathologies, to the extent where props were required. This is precisely the case of one of the sub-floors in the sacristy that was abutted to the parish church of San Miguel in Morón during the 17th century. The sub-floors on both levels are made of timber beams and hollow plaster bricks. As part of the restoration works carried out in 2013, a concrete slab added for reinforcement in 1970 was removed and replaced with a new reinforcement made out of plywood, pre-tensioning the joints between the new and old pieces. This has significantly reduced the cambers, preserved all the principal elements and led to a more efficient performance. This paper describes the conditions prior to the intervention, the process followed and the results obtained during these restoration works.

Philosophers often treat racist and sexist slurs as a special sort of puzzle. What is the difference between a slur and its correlates? In attempting to answer this question, a second distinction has been overlooked: that between slurs and insults. What makes a term count as a slur? This is not an unnecessary taxonomical question as long as ableist terms such as ‘moron’ are dismissed as mere insults. Attempts to resolve the insult/slur distinction by considering the communicative content of slurs are not promising. A better solution is offered by speech act theory, and this paper develops a novel way to describe ordinary slurring utterances as oppressive speech acts. This can both explain the difference between slurs and insults, and challenge the dismissal of ableist terms.

The Xar Moron suture zone is located on the suture of North China Craton and Siberian Craton, which is one of the research hotspots in the Geoscience. In this paper, the western section of the Xar Moron suture zone is taken as the research object. Based on geological and geodynamic analysis, the tectonic and evolution stages of the study area were divided, the evolution model of the subduction and closure of the Paleo-Asian Ocean in the study area, the collision of plates and plates is established. The results show that Xar Moron fault is a suture, and there are obvious differences between the crustal structures on both sides of the fault, outcrop volcanic rocks are distinguished by high potassium calcium alkaline series and their magmatic source is a mixture of crust source and mantle source. The study area is divided into four tectonic evolution stages, C2-P2, P2-P3, P3-T3and After T3stage. It is estimated that in the late Permian to early Triassic, Paleo-Asian Ocean has experienced the post-arc dilation, the arc-continent collision and the pre-arc accretion stage. It established the subduction and closing evolutionary mode of the Paleo-Asian Ocean in the Xar Moron suture zone, which provide a reference for the study of the dynamic mechanism of the formation of the fault zone.

The Permian Solonker–Xar Moron River Suture in South Mongolia and Inner Mongolia of China represents a major tectonic boundary in Asia. The position of its eastward continuation in northeastern China has been debated for many years. In order to resolve this debate, we measured detrital zircons of the Cisuralian (Early Permian) plant fossil-bearing Hesheng Formation in the Yanbian area, Jilin Province. The detrital zircons have ages of ca. 2541–2535 Ma, 1897–1832 Ma, 458–452 Ma, and 390–280 Ma. We therefore conclude that the depositional age of the Hesheng Formation is younger than ca. 280 Ma; this is consistent with paleontologic data that indicates an Artinskian–Early Kungurian age. The presence of Neoarchean and Paleoproterozoic zircons suggests that the Hesheng Formation may have a North-China affinity; the absence of Neoproterozoic and Pan-African zircons preclude detrital sources from the Jiamusi–Mongolia Block during the Cisuralian. This, combined with the Permian floristic and stratigraphic data, provides a clue that the Solonker–Xar Moron River Suture likely extends to the Wangqing–Hunchun region, in eastern Jilin Province.

Carrying out restoration works at old constructions offers a valuable opportunity for learning more about the building legacy they conceal, especially when they are the result of historical remodellings and extensions. A knowledge of the solutions that the builders adopted for stone walls, arches and vaults, of the construction logics followed and of the techniques applied provides vital clues for understanding their structural behaviour and the reasons for the discernible lesions, and for evaluating their condition correctly. During our restoration of the chapel of La Antigua adjoining the church of San Miguel in Morón, we were able to observe this legacy and confirm the importance of compiling knowledge obtained from various sources such as the graphic survey of the construction, the building sequence, geotechnical and documentary studies, and the analysis of the formal graphic control systems used to draw the plans, known as architecture treatises and manuscripts., Las obras de restauración sobre construcciones antiguas es un momento indispensable para el conocimiento del legado constructivo que permanece oculto en ellas, sobre todo cuando son resultado de reformas y ampliaciones históricas.

Abstract From 1999 to 2007 Japan-Mongol joint archaeological expedition worked in the Ulaan Uushig site near the city Mörön, Northern Mongolia. The purpose of our survey is to determine the date of the beginning of nomadic powers in the Eurasian steppes. In places where early kingship occurred, various sizes of tombs were often built. The tomb size reflected the social status of the dead. And a powerful “king” built a big tumulus as a symbol of power. However, elite tumuli were abandoned along with the maturity of power structures. We consider that such a phenomenon can also be seen in the Eurasian steppes. For this reason we looked for the earliest tumuli in Mongolia, the heartland of rider nomads, and studied the change of size and structure of nomadic elite tombs.

- Abstract

On a hand-made poster in the ‘HQ’ of the Biker Club in Vorkuta, the three members of the local punk band Mazut loom out of the darkness, their faces comically distorted and framed either side by the words ‘Fucking noise’ and ‘Mutant-morons’. This article traces tropes of ‘mutation’, ‘mutant’ and ‘moron’ within the music, performance and self-identifications of punk scene members drawing on interviews, field notes, audio and visual recordings gathered in autumn 2009 in the city of Vorkuta in Russia’s far North. It explores the ‘mutant’ hero as it appears in facial and bodily gestures, song lyrics and everyday talk on the punk scene. It considers the meanings attached to the practice of ‘mutation’ among scene members as well as the unarticulated role it plays in signalling a boundary crossing between ‘everyday life’, marked by heavy physical and emotional demands of routines of paid employment and family lives, and ‘subcultural life’, as a practice of the enactment of (a consciously temporary) freedom from them.
