Building on the insight that engineered noise, specifically, engineered dephasing can enhance the adiabaticity of controlled quantum dynamics, we investigate how a dephasing-generating coupling to an auxiliary quantum system affects quantum annealing protocols. By calculating the exact reduced system dynamics, we show how this coupling enhances the system's adiabaticity solely through a coherent mechanism - an effective energy rescaling. We show that it can lead to an annealing speedup linearly proportional to the strength of the coupling. We discuss the experimental feasibility of the protocols, and investigate the trade-off between fidelity and implementability by examining two modified versions with fewer types of required physical couplings., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

Given two subgroups $H,K$ of a compact group $G$, the probability that a random element of $H$ commutes with a random element of $K$ is denoted by $Pr(H,K)$. We show that if $G$ is a profinite group containing a Sylow $2$-subgroup $P$, a Sylow $3$-subgroup $Q_3$ and a Sylow $5$-subgroup $Q_5$ such that $Pr(P,Q_3)$ and $Pr(P,Q_5)$ are both positive, then $G$ is virtually prosoluble (Theorem 1.1). Furthermore, if $G$ is a prosoluble group in which for every subset $\pi\subseteq\pi(G)$ there is a Hall $\pi$-subgroup $H_\pi$ and a Hall $\pi'$-subgroup $H_{\pi'}$ such that $Pr(H_\pi,H_{\pi'})>0$, then $G$ is virtually pronilpotent (Theorem 1.2).

We propose a novel approach to mitigate the decoherence effects on a target system S by coupling it to an ancillary system A with tunable parameters. By suitably engineering the S-A interaction Hamiltonian, a dark factorized compound state is found that achieves effective noise cancellation and significantly preserves quantum coherence in the target system S. We illustrate our methodology for a system $S$ consisting of two-mode Bosons trapped in a double-well potential and affected by decoherence through a Gorini-Kossakowski-Sudarshan-Lindblad (GKSL) master equation. By a suitable coupling of the system $S$ with an ancillary two-mode system of the same kind of S via a density-density interaction, we enhance the resilience of the system NOON state, a quantum-mechanical many-body entangled state crucial for quantum computing. We further explore potential experimental implementations of the proposed noise cancellation technique, focusing on configurations involving dipole-dipole interactions in optical lattices. Finally, we propose a numerical optimization protocol that learns the system A and its interaction with S to maximize the survival probability of specific quantum states which can be potentially used in more generic quantum systems.

We study the emergence of dynamical phases of a Bose-Einstein condensate that is optomechanically coupled to a dissipative cavity mode and transversally driven by a laser. We focus on the regime close to the optomechanical resonance, where the atoms' refractive index shifts the cavity into resonance, assuming fast cavity relaxation. We derive an effective model for the atomic motion, where the cavity degrees of freedom are eliminated using perturbation theory in the atom-cavity coupling and benchmark its predictions using numerical simulations based on the full model. Away from the optomechanical resonance, perturbation theory in the lowest order (adiabatic elimination) reliably describes the dynamics and predicts chaotic phases with unstable oscillations. Interestingly, the dynamics close to the optomechanical resonance are qualitatively captured only by including the corrections to next order (non-adiabatic corrections). In this regime we find limit cycle phases that describe stable oscillations of the density with a well defined frequency. We further show that such limit cycle solutions are metastable configurations of the adiabatic model. Our work sheds light on the mechanisms that are required to observe dynamical phases and predict their existence in atom-cavity systems where a substantial timescale separation is present., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

We study the onset of collective spin-self-organization in a thermal ensemble of driven two-level atoms confined in an optical cavity. The atoms spontaneously form a spin-pattern above a critical driving strength that sets a threshold and is determined by the cavity parameters, the initial temperature, and the transition frequency of the atomic spin. Remarkably, we find that inhomogeneous Doppler broadening facilitates the onset of spin-self-organization. In particular, the threshold is non-monotonic when increasing the spin transition frequency and reaches a minimum when the Doppler broadening is of similar magnitude. This feature emerges due to Doppler-induced resonances. Above the threshold, we find cooperative dynamics of spin, spatial, and momentum degrees of freedom leading to density modulations, fast reduction of kinetic energy, and the emergence of non-thermal states. The phenomenon of subradiance, marked by its surprising suppression of spontaneous emission, challenges conventional expectations of the collective behavior of scatterers. We study subradiance in the experimental setting of a Bose-Einstein condensate positioned at the mode crossing of two optical cavities. In this setup, subradiance manifests in the form of metastable density structures that suppress emission into one cavity mode, thereby preventing relaxation to the stationary, superradiant grating that minimizes the system's energy. We observe lifetimes of the subradiant states exceeding hundred milliseconds, far surpassing any characteristic dynamic time scale of the system. Eventually, an instability triggers a rapid transition to the superradiant stationary pattern. We reproduce these dynamics by a quantum mean field model, suggesting that subradiance shares characteristics with quasi-stationary states predicted in other long-range interacting systems such as astrophysical clusters and plasmas. This behavior highlights the potential of photon-mediated long-range forces as controllable and exploitable quantum cooperative phenomenon.

We present a numerical study of multi-commodity transport in a noisy, nonlinear network. The nonlinearity determines the dynamics of the edge capacities, which can be amplified or suppressed depending on the local current flowing across an edge. We consider network self-organization for three different nonlinear functions: For all three we identify parameter regimes where noise leads to self-organization into more robust topologies, that are not found by the sole noiseless dynamics. Moreover, the interplay between noise and specific functional behavior of the nonlinearity gives rise to different features, such as (i) continuous or discontinuous responses to the demand strength and (ii) either single or multi-stable solutions. Sparse recovery principles play an important role in solving many nonlinear ill-posed inverse problems. We investigate a variational framework with support Oracle for compressed sensing sparse reconstructions, where the available measurements are nonlinear and possibly corrupted by noise. A graph neural network, named Oracle-Net, is proposed to predict the support from the nonlinear measurements and is integrated into a regularized recovery model to enforce sparsity. The derived nonsmooth optimization problem is then efficiently solved through a constrained proximal gradient method. Error bounds on the approximate solution of the proposed Oracle-based optimization are provided in the context of the ill-posed Electrical Impedance Tomography problem. Numerical solutions of the EIT nonlinear inverse reconstruction problem confirm the potential of the proposed method which improves the reconstruction quality from undersampled measurements, under sparsity assumptions.

We analyze the relaxation dynamics in an open system, composed by a quantum gas of bosons in a lattice interacting via both contact and global interactions. We report the onset of periodic oscillations of the atomic coherences exhibiting hallmarks of synchronization after a quantum quench. The dynamical behavior exhibits the many-body collapse and revival of atomic coherences and emerges from the interplay of the quantum dissipative nature of the cavity field and the presence of a (approximate) strong symmetry in the dissipative system. We further show that the approximate symmetry can dynamically self-organize. We argue that the approximate symmetry can be tailored to obtain long-lived coherences. These insights provide a general recipe to engineer the dynamics of globally-interacting systems.

Trapped ions in a periodic potential are a paradigm of a frustrated Wigner crystal. The dynamics is captured by a long-range Frenkel-Kontorova model. The classical ground state can be mapped to the one of an antiferromagnetic spin chain with long-range interactions in a magnetic field, whose strength is determined by the mismatch between chain's and substrate lattice's periodicity. The mapping is exact when the substrate potential is a piecewise harmonic potential and holds for any two-body interaction decaying as $1/r^\alpha$ with the distance $r$. The ground state is a devil's staircase of regular, periodic structures as a function of the mismatch, whose range of stability depends also on the coefficient $\alpha$. While the staircase is well defined in the thermodynamic limit for $\alpha>1$, for Coulomb interactions, $\alpha=1$, it disappears and the sliding-to-pinned transitions becomes crossovers. However, due to the logarithmic convergence to the thermodynamic limit characteristic of the Coulomb potential, the staircase is found for any finite number of ions. We discuss the experimental parameters as well as the features that allow one to observe and reveal our predictions in experimental platforms. These dynamics are a showcase of the versatility of trapped ion platforms for exploring the interplay between frustration and interactions.

We introduce a signed variant of (valued) quivers and a mutation rule that generalizes the classical Fomin-Zelevinsky mutation of quivers. To any signed valued quiver we associate a matrix that is a signed analogue of the Cartan counterpart appearing in the theory of cluster algebras. From this matrix, we construct a Lie algebra via a "Serre-like" presentation. In the mutation Dynkin case, we define root systems using the signed Cartan counterpart and show compatibility with mutation of roots as defined by Parsons. Using results from Barot-Rivera and P\'erez-Rivera, we show that mutation equivalent signed quivers yield isomorphic Lie algebras, giving presentations of simple complex Lie algebras., Comment: Small changes, improved abstract

We predict that ultracold bosonic dipolar gases, confined within a multilayer geometry, may undergo self-assembling processes, leading to the formation of chain gases and solids. These dipolar chains, with dipoles aligned across different layers, emerge at low densities and resemble phases observed in liquid crystals, such as nematic and smectic phases. We calculate the phase diagram using quantum Monte Carlo methods, introducing a newly devised trial wave function designed for describing the chain gas, where dipoles from different layers form chains without in-plane long-range order. We find gas, solid, and chain phases, along with quantum phase transitions between these states. Specifically, we predict a quantum phase transition from a gaseous to a self-ordered phase, which occurs at a critical interlayer distance. Remarkably, in the self-organized phases, the mean interparticle distance can significantly exceed the characteristic length of the interaction potential, yielding solids and chain gases with densities several orders of magnitude lower than those of conventional quantum solids., Comment: Main text and Supplemental Material: 9 pages, 7 figures. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2012.14545

Ideal photonic quantum memories can store arbitrary pulses of light with unit efficiency. This requires operating in the adiabatic regime, where pulses have a duration much longer than the bandwidth of the memory. In the non-adiabatic regime of short pulses, memories are therefore imperfect, and information is always lost. We theoretically investigate the bandwidth limitations for setups based on individual atoms, or ensembles thereof, confined inside optical cavities. We identify an effective strategy for optimizing the efficiencies of the storage and retrieval process regardless of the duration of the pulses. Our protocol is derived almost completely analytically and attains efficiencies better than or comparable to those obtained by numerical optimization. Furthermore, our results provide an improved understanding of the performance of quantum memories in several regimes. When considering pulses defined on an infinite time interval, the shapes can be divided into two categories, depending on their asymptotic behaviours. If the intensity of the pulse increases with time slower than or as an exponential function, then the storage efficiency is only limited by the pulse width. For a group G and a positive integer n write B_n(G) = {x \in G : |x^G | \le n}. If s is a positive integer and w is a group word, say that G satisfies the (n,s)-covering condition with respect to the word w if there exists a subset S of G such that |S| \le s and all w-values of G are contained in B_n(G)S. In a natural way, this condition emerged in the study of probabilistically nilpotent groups of class two. In this paper we obtain the following results. Let w be a multilinear commutator word on k variables and let G be a group satisfying the (n,s)-covering condition with respect to the word w. Then G has a soluble subgroup T such that the index [G : T] and the derived length of T are both (k,n,s)-bounded. Let G be a group satisfying the (n,s)-covering condition with respect to the word \gamma_k. Then (1) \gamma_{2k-1}(G) has a subgroup $T$ such that the index [\gamma_{2k-1}(G) : T] and |T'| are both (k,n,s)-bounded; and (2) G has a nilpotent subgroup U such that the index [G : U] and the nilpotency class of U are both (k,n,s)-bounded.

A Wigner chain in a periodic potential is a paradigmatic example of geometric frustration with long-range interactions. The dynamics emulates the Frenkel-Kontorova model with Coulomb interactions. In the continuum approximation, dislocations are sine-Gordon solitons with power-law decaying tails. We show that their action is mapped into a massive, long-range (1+1) Thirring model, where the solitons are charged fermionic excitations over an effective Dirac sea. We identify the corresponding mean field theory and show that the Coulomb interactions destabilize structures commensurate with the periodic substrate, suppressing their onset and giving rise to {\it interaction-induced} lubrication. Our study identifies the role of long-range interactions on determining nanofriction. Our predictions can be probed in state-of-the-art trapped ion experiments.

We analyze the efficiency of protocols for adiabatic quantum state transfer assisted by an engineered reservoir. The target dynamics is a quantum trajectory in the Hilbert space and is a fixed point of a time-dependent master equation in the limit of adiabatic dynamics. We specialize to quantum state transfer in a qubit and determine the optimal schedule for a class of time-dependent Lindblad equations. The speed limit on state transfer is extracted from a physical model of a qubit coupled to a reservoir, from which the Lindblad equation is derived in the Born-Markov limit. Our analysis shows that the resulting efficiency is comparable to the efficiency of the optimal unitary dynamics. Numerical studies indicate that reservoir-engineered protocols could outperform unitary protocols outside the regime of the Born-Markov master equation, namely, when correlations between the qubit and reservoir become relevant. We analyse the ground-state quantum phase diagram of hardcore Bosons interacting with repulsive dipolar potentials. The bosons dynamics is described by the extended-Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian on a two-dimensional lattice. The ground state results from the interplay between the lattice geometry and the long-range interactions, which we account for by means of a classical spin mean-field approach limited by the size of the considered unit cells. This extended classical spin mean-field theory accounts for the long-range density-density interaction without truncation. We consider three different lattice geometries: square, honeycomb, and triangular. In the limit of zero hopping the ground state is always a devil's staircase of solid (gapped) phases. Such crystalline phases with broken translational symmetry are robust with respect to finite hopping amplitudes. At intermediate hopping amplitudes, these gapped phases melt, giving rise to various lattice supersolid phases, which can have exotic features with multiple sublattice densities. At sufficiently large hoppings the ground state is a superfluid. The stability of phases predicted by our approach is gauged by comparison to the known quantum phase diagrams of the Bose-Hubbard model with nearest-neighbour interactions as well as quantum Monte Carlo simulations for the dipolar case on the square and triangular lattice. We show that $F_2(G)$ has $\epsilon$-bounded index in $G$. If $G$ is a finite soluble group in which for any prime $p\in\pi(G)$ there is a Sylow $p$-subgroup $P$ and a Hall $p'$-subgroup $H$ such that $Pr(P,H)\ge \epsilon$, then $F(G)$ has $\epsilon$-bounded index in $G$. Moreover, we establish criteria for nilpotency and solubility of $G$ such as: If for any primes $p,q\in\pi(G)$ the group $G$ has a Sylow $p$-subgroup $P$ and a Sylow $q$-subgroup $Q$ with $Pr(P,Q)>2/3$, then $G$ is nilpotent. If for any primes $p,q\in\pi(G)$ the group $G$ has a Sylow $p$-subgroup $P$ and a Sylow $q$-subgroup $Q$ with $Pr(P,Q)>2/5$, then $G$ is soluble.

Cooling a quantum system to its ground state is important for the characterization of non-trivial interacting systems, and in the context of a variety of quantum information platforms. In principle, this can be achieved by employing measurement-based passive steering protocols, where the steering steps are predetermined and are not based on measurement readouts. However, measurements, i.e., coupling the system to auxiliary quantum degrees of freedom, is rather costly, and protocols in which the number of measurements scales with system size will have limited practical applicability. Here, we identify conditions under which measurement-based cooling protocols can be taken to the dilute limit. For two examples of frustration-free one-dimensional spin chains, we show that steering on a single link is sufficient to cool these systems into their unique ground states. We corroborate our analytical arguments with finite-size numerical simulations and discuss further applications.

In this theoretical investigation, we study the effectiveness of a protocol that incorporates periodic quantum resetting to prepare ground states of frustration-free parent Hamiltonians. This protocol uses a steering Hamiltonian that enables local coupling between the system and ancillary degrees of freedom. At periodic intervals, the ancillary system is reset to its initial state. For infinitesimally short reset times, the dynamics can be approximated by a Lindbladian whose steady state is the target state. For finite reset times, however, the spin chain and the ancilla become entangled between reset operations. To evaluate the performance of the protocol, we employ Matrix Product State simulations and quantum trajectory techniques, focusing on the preparation of the spin-1 Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki state. Our analysis considers convergence time, fidelity, and energy evolution under different reset intervals. Our numerical results show that ancilla system entanglement is essential for faster convergence. In particular, there exists an optimal reset time at which the protocol performs best. Using a simple approximation, we provide insights into how to optimally choose the mapping operators applied to the system during the reset procedure. Furthermore, the protocol shows remarkable resilience to small deviations in reset time and dephasing noise. Our study suggests that stroboscopic maps using quantum resetting may offer advantages over alternative methods, such as quantum reservoir engineering and quantum state steering protocols, which rely on Markovian dynamics.

Let $\mathfrak C$ be a class of finite groups which is closed for subgroups, quotients and direct products. Given a profinite group $G$ and an element $x\in G$, we denote by $P_{\mathfrak{C}}(x,G)$ the probability that $x$ and a randomly chosen element of $G$ generate a pro-${\mathfrak C}$ subgroup. We say that a profinite group $G$ is $\mathfrak C$-positive if $P_{\mathfrak{C}}(x,G)>0$ for all $x \in G.$ %Moreover we say that $G$ is $\mathfrak C$-bounded-positive if there exists a positive constant $\eta$ such that $P_{\mathfrak{C}}(x,G)>\eta$ for all $x \in G.$ We establish several equivalent conditions for a profinite group to be $\mathfrak C$-positive when $\mathfrak C$ is the class of finite soluble groups or of finite nilpotent groups. In particular, for the above classes, the profinite $\mathfrak C$-positive groups are virtually prosoluble (resp., virtually nilpotent). We also draw some consequences on the prosoluble (resp. pronilpotent) graph of a profinite group.

We analyse the dynamics of quantum correlations between two qubits coupled to a linear chain of oscillators. The chain mediates interactions between the qubits and acts as a non-Markovian reservoir. The the model is amenable to an analytical solution when the initial state of the chain is Gaussian}. We study the dynamics of the qubits concurrence starting from a separable state and assuming that the chain spectrum is gapped {and the chain is initially in a thermal state. We identify three relevant regimes that depend on the strength of the qubit-chain coupling in relation to the spectral gap. These are (i) the weak coupling regime, where the qubits are entangled at the asymptotics; (ii) the strong coupling regime, where the concurrence can exhibit collapses followed by revivals with exponentially attenuated amplitude; and (iii) the thermal damping regime, where the concurrence rapidly vanishes due to the chain's thermal excitations. In all cases, if entanglement is generated, this occurs after a finite time has elapsed. This time scale depends exponentially on the qubits distance and is determined by the spectral properties of the chain. Entanglement irreversible decay, on the other hand, is due to the dissipative effect induced by the coupling with the chain and is controlled by the coupling strength between the chain and qubits. This study unravels the basic mechanisms leading to entanglement in a non-Markovian bath and allows to identify the key resources for realising quantum coherent dynamics of open systems., Comment: To appear in Phys. A group $G$ is said to have restricted centralizers if for each $g \in G$ the centralizer $C_G(g)$ either is finite or has finite index in $G$. Shalev showed that a profinite group with restricted centralizers is virtually abelian. We take interest in profinite groups with restricted centralizers of uniform commutators, that is, elements of the form $[x_1,\dots,x_k]$, where $\pi(x_1)=\pi(x_2)=\dots=\pi(x_k)$. Here $\pi(x)$ denotes the set of prime divisors of the order of $x\in G$. It is shown that such a group necessarily has an open nilpotent subgroup. We use this result to deduce that $\gamma_k(G)$ is finite if and only if the cardinality of the set of uniform $k$-step commutators in $G$ is less than $2^{\aleph_0}$

We propose a general approach to analyse diagonal ordering patterns in bosonic lattice models with algebraically decaying density-density interactions on arbitrary lattices. The key idea is a systematic search for the energetically best order on all unit cells of the lattice up to a given extent. Using resummed couplings we evaluate the energy of the ordering patterns in the thermodynamic limit using finite unit cells. We apply the proposed approach to the atomic limit of the extended Bose-Hubbard model on the triangular lattice at fillings $f=1/2$ and $f=1$. We investigate the ground-state properties of the antiferromagnetic long-range Ising model on the triangular lattice and determine a six-fold degenerate plain-stripe phase to be the ground state for finite decay exponents. We also probe the classical limit of the Fendley-Sengupta-Sachdev model describing Rydberg atom arrays. In this new computing paradigm, named quantum computing, researchers from all over the world are taking their first steps in designing quantum circuits for image processing, through a difficult process of knowledge transfer. This effort is named Quantum Image Processing, an emerging research field pushed by powerful parallel computing capabilities of quantum computers. This work goes in this direction and proposes the challenging development of a powerful method of image denoising, such as the Total Variation (TV) model, in a quantum environment. The proposed Quantum TV is described and its sub-components are analysed. Despite the natural limitations of the current capabilities of quantum devices, the experimental results show a competitive denoising performance compared to the classical variational TV counterpart.

Topological defects have strong impact on both elastic and inelastic properties of materials. In this article, we investigate the possibility to controllably inject topological defects in quantum simulators of solid state lattice structures. We investigate the quench dynamics of a Frenkel-Kontorova chain, which is used to model discommensurations of particles in cold atoms and trapped ionic crystals. The interplay between an external periodic potential and the inter-particle interaction makes lattice discommensurations, the topological defects of the model, energetically favorable and can tune a commensurate-incommensurate structural transition. Our key finding is that a quench from the commensurate to incommensurate phase causes a controllable injection of topological defects at periodic time intervals. We employ this mechanism to generate quantum states which are a superposition of lattice structures with and without topological defects. We conclude by presenting concrete perspectives for the observation and control of topological defects in trapped ion experiments., Comment: 7 pages,4 figures

Many-body cavity QED experiments are established platforms to tailor and control the collective responses of ensembles of atoms, interacting through one or more common photonic modes. The rich diversity of dynamical phases they can host, calls for a unified framework. Here we commence this program by showing that a cavity QED simulator assembled from $N$-levels bosonic atoms, can reproduce and extend the possible dynamical responses of collective observables occurring after a quench. Specifically, by initializing the atoms in classical or quantum states, or by leveraging intra-levels quantum correlations, we craft on demand the entire synchronization/desynchronization dynamical crossover of an exchange model for $SU(N)$ spins. We quantitatively predict the onset of different dynamical responses by combining the Liouville-Arnold theorem on classical integrability with an ansatz for reducing the collective evolution to an effective few-body dynamics. Among them, we discover a synchronized chaotic phase induced by quantum correlations and associated to a first order non-equilibrium transition in the Lyapunov exponent of collective atomic dynamics. The network dynamics results from the interplay between a nonlinear function of the flow, dissipation, and Gaussian, additive noise. For a given set of parameters and finite noise amplitudes, the network self-organizes into one of several metastable configurations, according to a probability distribution that depends on the noise amplitude {\alpha}. At a finite value {\alpha}, we find a resonant-like behavior for which one network topology is the most probable stationary state. This specific topology maximizes the robustness and transport efficiency, it is reached with the maximal convergence rate, and it is not found by the noiseless dynamics. We argue that this behavior is a manifestation of noise-induced resonances in network self-organization. Let $G$ be a finite group. A coprime commutator in $G$ is any element that can be written as a commutator $[x,y]$ for suitable $x,y\in G$ such that $\pi(x)\cap\pi(y)=\emptyset$. Here $\pi(g)$ denotes the set of prime divisors of the order of the element $g\in G$. An anti-coprime commutator is an element that can be written as a commutator $[x,y]$, where $\pi(x)=\pi(y)$. The main results of the paper are as follows. -- If $|x^G|\leq n$ whenever $x$ is a coprime commutator, then $G$ has a nilpotent subgroup of $n$-bounded index. -- If $|x^G|\leq n$ for every anti-coprime commutator $x\in G$, then $G$ has a subgroup $H$ of nilpotency class at most $4$ such that $[G : H]$ and $|\gamma_4 (H)|$ are both $n$-bounded. We also consider finite groups in which the centralizers of coprime, or anti-coprime, commutators are of bounded order.

We analyze the ground-state entanglement entropy of the extended Bose-Hubbard model with infinite-range interactions. This model describes the low-energy dynamics of ultracold bosons tightly bound to an optical lattice and dispersively coupled to a cavity mode. The competition between onsite repulsion and global cavity-induced interactions leads to a rich phase diagram, which exhibits superfluid, supersolid, and insulating (Mott and checkerboard) phases. We use a slave-boson treatment of harmonic quantum fluctuations around the mean-field solution and calculate the entanglement entropy across the phase transitions. At commensurate filling, the insulator-superfluid transition is signalled by a singularity in the area-law scaling coefficient of the entanglement entropy, that is similar to the one reported for the standard Bose-Hubbard model. Remarkably, at the continuous $\mathbb{Z}_2$ superfluid-to-supersolid transition we find a critical logarithmic term, regardless of the filling. This behavior originates from the appearance of a roton mode in the excitation and entanglement spectrum, becoming gapless at the critical point, and it is characteristic of collective models., Comment: 19 pages, 4+9 figures

Motivated by the challenge of identifying intruder ions in a cold ion crystal, we investigate calorimetry from emitted fluorescence light. Under continuous Doppler cooling, the ion crystal reaches a temperature equilibrium with a fixed level of fluorescence intensity and any change in the motional energy of the crystal results in a modification of this intensity. We theoretically determine the fluorescence rate of an ion crystal as a function of the temperature, assuming that laser light is scattered along a two-level electronic transition, which couples to the crystal's vibrations via the mechanical effects of light. We analyze how the heat dissipated by collisions of an incoming intruder ion alters the scattering rate. We argue that an energy change by an incoming $^{229}$Th$^{10+}$ ion can be unambiguously detected within 100 $\mu$s via illuminating a fraction of a 10$^{3}$ ion crystal. We consider a non-linear variant of the transport-diffusion osmosis model for solving a variety of imaging problems such as shadow/soft-light removal and compact data representation. The non-linear behaviour is encoded in terms of a general scalar function g with suitable properties, which allows to balance the diffusion intensity on the different regions of the image while preventing smoothing artefacts. For the proposed model, conservation properties (intensity and non-negativity) are proved and a variational interpretation is showed for specific choices of g. Upon suitable spatial discretisation, both an explicit and a semi-implicit iterative scheme are considered, for which convergence restrictions and unconditional stability are proved, respectively. To validate the proposed modelling and the computational speed of the numerical schemes considered, we report several results and comparisons for the problem of shadow/light-spot removal and compact data representation, showing that artefact-free and computationally efficient results are obtained in comparison to standard linear and anisotropic models, and state-of-the art approaches., Comment: 25 pages, 14 figures

We present a general approach to derive Lindblad master equations for a subsystem whose dynamics is coupled to dissipative bosonic modes. The derivation relies on a Schrieffer-Wolff transformation which allows to eliminate the bosonic degrees of freedom after self-consistently determining their state as a function of the coupled quantum system. We apply this formalism to the dissipative Dicke model and derive a Lindblad master equation for the atomic spins, which includes the coherent and dissipative interactions mediated by the bosonic mode. This master equation accurately predicts the Dicke phase transition and gives the correct steady state. In addition, we compare the dynamics using exact diagonalization and numerical integration of the master equation with the predictions of semiclassical trajectories. We finally test the performance of our formalism by studying the relaxation of a NOON state and show that the dynamics captures quantum metastability beyond the mean-field approximation., Comment: 6+6 pages, 4+1 figures with SM

We numerically study the phase diagram of bosons tightly trapped in the lowest band of an optical lattice and dispersively coupled to a single-mode cavity field. The dynamics is encompassed by an extended Bose-Hubbard model. Here, the cavity-mediated interactions are described by a two-body potential term with a global range and by a correlated tunneling term where the hopping amplitude depends on a global observable. We determine the ground state properties in one dimension by means of the density matrix renormalization group algorithm, focusing on the effects due to the correlated tunneling. The latter is responsible for the onset of bond orders, manifesting in one insulating and two gapless bond ordered phases. We discuss the resulting phases for different geometries that correspond to different relative strengths of the correlated tunneling coefficient. We finally analyze the scaling of the entanglement entropy in the gapless bond ordered phases that appear entirely due to global interactions and determine the corresponding central charges., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures. We theoretically analyze the phase diagram of a quantum gas of bosons that interact via repulsive dipolar interactions. The bosons are tightly confined by an optical lattice in a quasi one-dimensional geometry. In the single-band approximation, their dynamics is described by an extended Bose-Hubbard model where the relevant contributions of the dipolar interactions consist of density-density repulsion and correlated tunneling terms. We evaluate the phase diagram for unit density using numerical techniques based on the density-matrix renormalization group algorithm. Our results predict that correlated tunneling can significantly modify the parameter range of the topological insulator phase.
