The statistical literature proposed many contributions about survival analysis in medical research, in this work this approach is proposed in a business context. The aim of this paper is to control the mortality of the users belonging to an e-mail subscribers list for a company operating in the healthcare information sector. Having available the survival times for each subscriber, the choice was oriented to survival models to evaluate the abandon of the customers. A survival analysis was conducted through a Cox model considering some risk factors of the subscriber. The selected Cox model carried to the identification of risk profiles representing different situations in terms of probability of abandon.

This paper presents and discusses two approaches to the virtual reconstructions of the architectural remains of the Late Roman site of Umm-al Dabadib, at the outskirts of the Kharga Oasis (Egypt's Western Desert). The dense settlement is clustered around a central building resembling a fortlet. The primary construction material was mudbrick, completed by a few stone elements. Elliptical pitched-brick barrel vaults covered the small rooms that compose the various buildings. The unit of measurement used in the planning and building was the ancient Egyptian (reformed) cubit. The first method adopted to study these remains consists of direct 3D modelling on the photogrammetric point cloud using the parametric approach of the BIM software Autodesk Revit. This process allowed the complete reconstruction of all levels of the well-preserved fort in the settlement center. The second method tested, on the domestic unit in the northwest corner of the settlement, involved 3D modelling of hypothetical original form starting from 2D technical drawings elaborated from the photogrammetric point cloud in its current state and its hypothetical original form. These drawings were used as a reference to model the domestic unit in Rhinoceros software, which is more suitable to model complex shapes, such as typical living room of the local domestic units, covered by two intersecting barrel vaults of different sizes. The complex morphology of the biaxial vaulted system would have been difficult to model with a more rigid software such as Revit. Instead, Rhinoceros allowed recreating the biaxial vault using tools to extrude profiles, subtract and add simpler shapes. OBJECTIVES: to characterise the cases of tuberculosis (TB) aged 0-24 years reported in Emilia-Romagna (Northern Italy) Region between 2001 and 2010 through an ecological approach and from a sociodemographic perspective. DESIGN: observational study on notified TB cases, with data integration and subsequent location through geocoding and ecological deprivation index. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: notification records of TB cases identified by the current surveillance system. Cases were geocoded where address details were available and, through spatial intersection with census block polygons, the related deprivation index (DI) was attributed to them. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: deprivation index distribution of the observed cases. RESULTS: in the considered decade, 686 cases of tuberculosis in the age group 0-24 years were reported, 14.5% of the overall number of cases in the Emilia-Romagna Region. The DI was attributed to the 90.4% of cases. Notified TB cases were more frequently located in the most deprived areas. CONCLUSIONS: as other TB international surveillance systems, this study shows that it is possible to locate TB cases, to link them with census data and, therefore, to characterise with socioeconomic information. Looking ahead, the extension of the analysis to all age classes, the updating of socioeconomic data and the use of qualitative methodologies can integrate surveillance system data to better describe the social disadvantage among TB cases.

This aim of this study was to define a protocol aimed at effective diagnosis and prevention of transmission of Chagas disease in the Bologna district. According to the WHO, Chagas disease is a neglected disease, ‘related to poverty and social disadvantage’. Non-vectorial transmission and increasing migra- tion from endemic areas have raised concerns regarding the spread of the disease in non-endemic countries. However, no public health approach is presently enforced in Italy. Risk factors related to migration and those related to the socio-economic and cultural characteristics of the areas of origin4, included in the spectrum of distal determinants of health, act on the disease and its perception in the host country. A careful analysis encompassing clinical, socio-cultural and economic aspects is required, and a trans disciplinary and multi methodological approach, rooted in the Global Health perspective, is therefore needed. Through a team composed by infectious disease specialists, public health doctors and medical anthropologies, after extensive literature review, we analyzed the social epidemiology of Chagas disease in our territory and developed a research protocol to be implemented shortly. Key issues to be addressed include: (1) health needs assessment of target migrant population (i.e. Latina Americans), through community participation and collection of both quantitative and qualitative data; (2) health services involvement, through health professional’s participation and specific training. EXPECTED RESULTS(1.) Creation of a local diagnostic and therapeutic program for Chagas disease, (2.) Increased diagnostic rate for Chagas disease, (3.) Increased accessibility of target migrant population to health services, (4.) Empowerment of the target migrant community. The described approach allowed combination of different views and expertises in the definition of an innovative public health approach grounded in the distal as well as proximal determinants of health.

A series of meta-analyses of randomised controlled trials raised the question of whether the three-drug combination of CAP (cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, and cisplatin) was more or less effective than optimal-dose single-agent carboplatin for women with advanced ovarian cancer.

Crop management may modify soil characteristics, and as a consequence, alter incidence of diseases caused by soilborne pathogens. This study evaluated the suppressiveness to R. solani in 59 soil samples from a microbasin. Soil sampling areas included undisturbed forest, pasture and fallow ground areas, annual crops, perennial crops, and ploughed soil. The soil samples were characterized according to abiotic variables (pH; electrical conductivity; organic matter content; N total; P; K; Ca; Mg; Al; H; S; Na; Fe; Mn; Cu; Zn; B; cation exchange capacity; sum of bases and base saturation) and biotic variables (total microbial activity evaluated by the CO2 evolution and fluorescein diacetate hydrolysis; culturable bacterial, fungal, actinomycetes, protozoa, fluorescent Pseudomonas and Fusarium spp. communities). The contribution and relationships of these variables to suppression to R. solani were assessed by path analysis. When all samples were analyzed together, only abiotic variables correlated with suppression of R. solani, but the entire set of variables explained only 51% of the total variation. However, when samples were grouped and analyzed by vegetation cover, the set of evaluated variables in all cases accounted for more than 90% of the variation in suppression of the pathogen. In highly suppressive soils of forest and pasture/ fallow ground areas, several abiotic variables and fluorescein diacetate hydrolysis correlated with suppression of R. solani and the set of variables explained more than 98% of suppressiveness.
