A two-dimensional (2D) Weyl semimetal featuring a spin-polarized linear band dispersion and a nodal Fermi surface is a new topological phase of matter. It is a solid-state realization of Weyl fermions in an intrinsic 2D system. The nontrivial topology of 2D Weyl cones guarantees the existence of a new form of topologically protected boundary states, Fermi string edge states. In this work, we report the realization of a 2D Weyl semimetal in monolayer-thick epitaxial bismuthene grown on SnS(Se) substrate. The intrinsic band gap of bismuthene is eliminated by the space-inversion-symmetry-breaking substrate perturbations, resulting in a gapless spin-polarized Weyl band dispersion. The linear dispersion and spin polarization of the Weyl fermion states are observed in our spin and angle-resolved photoemission measurements. In addition, the scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy reveals a pronounced local density of states at the edge, suggesting the existence of Fermi string edge states. Topological kagome systems have been a topic of great interest in condensed matter physics due totheir unique electronic properties. The vanadium-based kagome materials are particularly intrigu-ing since they exhibit exotic phenomena such as charge density wave (CDW) and unconventionalsuperconductivity. The origin of these electronic instabilities is not fully understood, and the re-cent discovery of a charge density wave in ScV6Sn6provides a new avenue for investigation. In thiswork, we investigate the electronic structure of the novel kagome metal ScV6Sn6using angle resolvedphotoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), and first-principlesdensity functional theory calculations. Our analysis reveals for the first time the temperature-dependent band changes of ScV6Sn6and identifies a new band that exhibits a strong signatureof a structure with CDW below the critical temperature. Further analysis revealed that this newband is due to the surface kagome layer of the CDW structure. In addition, a Lifshitz transition isidentified in the ARPES spectra that is related to the saddle point moving across the Fermi levelat the critical temperature for the CDW formation. This result shows the CDW behavior may alsobe related to nesting of the saddle point, similar to related materials. However, no energy gap is observed at the Fermi level and thus the CDW is not a typical Fermi surface nesting scenario. These results provide new insights into the underlying physics of the CDW in the kagome materials and could have implications for the development of materials with new functionality.

The emergence of unconventional superconductivity in proximity to intertwined electronic orders is especially relevant in the case of iron-based superconductors. Such order consists of an electronic nematic order and a spin density wave in these systems. BaNi$_2$As$_2$, like its well-known iron-based analog BaFe$_2$As$_2$, also hosts a symmetry-breaking structural transition that is coupled to a unidirectional charge density wave (CDW), providing a novel platform to study intertwined orders. Here, through a systematic angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study combined with a detwinning $B_1g$ uniaxial strain, we identify distinct spectral evidence of band evolution due to the structural transition as well as CDW-induced band folding. In contrast to the nematicity and spin density wave in BaFe$_2$As$_2$, the structural and CDW order parameters in BaNi$_2$As$_2$ are observed to be strongly coupled and do not separate in the presence of uniaxial strain. Understanding band alignment and charge transfer at complex oxide interfaces is critical to tailoring and utilizing their diverse functionality. Towards this goal, we design and experimentally validate both Ohmic- and Schottky-like charge transfers at oxide/oxide semiconductor/metal interfaces. We utilize a method for predicting band alignment and charge transfer in ABO3 perovskites, where previously established rules for simple semiconductors fail. The prototypical systems chosen are the rare class of oxide metals, SrBO3 with B=V-Ta, when interfaced with the multifaceted semiconducting oxide, SrTiO3. For B=Nb and Ta, we confirm that a large accumulation of charge occurs in SrTiO3 due to higher energy Nb and Ta d-states relative to Ti; this gives rise to a high mobility metallic interface, which is an ideal epitaxial oxide/oxide Ohmic contact. On the other hand, for B=V, there is no charge transfer into the SrTiO3 interface, which serves as a highly conductive epitaxial gate metal. We report the growth of the intrinsic magnetic topological system MnTe(Bi2Te3)n by molecular beam epitaxy. By mapping the temperature and the Bi:Mn flux ratio, it is shown that there is a narrow growth window for the n=1 phase MnBi2Te4 with 2.04.5) it is found that the n = 2 MnBi4Te7 phase is stabilized. Transport measurements indicate that the MnBi2Te4 and MnBi4Te7 undergo magnetic transitions around 25 K, and 10 K, respectively, consistent with antiferromagnetic phases found in the bulk. Further, for Mn-rich conditions (Bi:Mn<2), ferromagnetism emerges that exhibits a clear hysteretic state in the Hall effect, which likely indicates Mn-doped MnBi2Te4. Understanding how to grow ternary chalcogenide phases is the key to synthesizing new materials and to interface magnetism and topology, which together are routes to realize and control exotic quantum phenomena., Comment: Accepted in Physical Review Materials

Establishing the appropriate theoretical framework for unconventional superconductivity in the iron-based materials requires correct understanding of both the electron correlation strength and the role of Fermi surfaces. This fundamental issue becomes especially relevant with the discovery of the iron chalcogenide (FeCh) superconductors, the only iron-based family in proximity to an insulating phase. Here, we use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) to measure three representative FeCh superconductors, FeTe0.56Se0.44, K0.76Fe1.72Se2, and monolayer FeSe film grown on SrTiO3. We show that, these FeChs are all in a strongly correlated regime at low temperatures, with an orbital-selective strong renormalization in the dxy bands despite having drastically different Fermi-surface topologies. Furthermore, raising temperature brings all three compounds from a metallic superconducting state to a phase where the dxy orbital loses all spectral weight while other orbitals remain itinerant. These observations establish that FeChs display universal orbital-selective strong correlation behaviors that are insensitive to the Fermi surface topology, and are close to an orbital-selective Mott phase (OSMP), hence placing strong constraints for theoretical understanding of iron-based superconductors., Comment: published version

Ultrathin FeSe films grown on SrTiO$_{3}$ substrates are a recent milestone in atomic material engineering due to their important role in understanding unconventional superconductivity in Fe-based materials. Using femtosecond time- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy, we study phonon frequencies in ultrathin FeSe/SrTiO$_{3}$ films grown by molecular beam epitaxy. After optical excitation, we observe periodic modulations of the photoelectron spectrum as a function of pump-probe delay for 1 unit cell, 3 unit cell, and 60 unit cell thick FeSe films. The frequencies of the coherent intensity oscillations increase from 5.00(2) to 5.25(2) THz with increasing film thickness. By comparing with previous works, we attribute this mode to the Se A$_\textrm{1g}$ phonon. The dominant mechanism for the phonon softening in 1 unit cell thick FeSe films is a substrate-induced lattice strain. The level of electronic correlation has been one of the key questions in understanding the nature of superconductivity. Among the iron-based superconductors, the iron chalcogenide family exhibits the strongest electron correlations. To gauge the correlation strength, we performed systematic angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study on the iron chalcogenide series Fe$_{1+y}$Se$_x$Te$_{1-x}$ (0$<$x$<$0.59), a model system with the simplest structure. Our measurement reveals an incoherent to coherent crossover in the electronic structure as the selenium ratio increases and the system evolves from the weakly localized to more itinerant state. Furthermore, we found that the effective mass of bands dominated by the d$_{xy}$ orbital character significantly decreases with increasing selenium ratio, as compared to the d$_{xz}$/d$_{yz}$ orbital-dominated bands. The orbital dependent change in the correlation level agrees with theoretical calculations on the band structure renormalization, and may help to understand the onset of superconductivity in Fe$_{1+y}$Se$_x$Te$_{1-x}$., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Quantum systems in confined geometries are host to novel physical phenomena. Examples include quantum Hall systems in semiconductors and Dirac electrons in graphene. Interest in such systems has also been intensified by the recent discovery of a large enhancement in photoluminescence quantum efficiency and a potential route to valleytronics in atomically thin layers of transition metal dichalcogenides, MX2 (M = Mo, W; X = S, Se, Te), which are closely related to the indirect to direct bandgap transition in monolayers. Here, we report the first direct observation of the transition from indirect to direct bandgap in monolayer samples by using angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy on high-quality thin films of MoSe2 with variable thickness, grown by molecular beam epitaxy. The band structure measured experimentally indicates a stronger tendency of monolayer MoSe2 towards a direct bandgap, as well as a larger gap size, than theoretically predicted. Moreover, our finding of a significant spin-splitting of 180 meV at the valence band maximum of a monolayer MoSe2 film could expand its possible application to spintronic devices., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures. We have used coherent, resonant, x-ray magnetic speckle patterns to measure the statistical evolution of the microscopic magnetic domains in perpendicular magnetic films as a function of the applied magnetic field. Our work constitutes the first direct, ensemble-averaged study of microscopic magnetic return point memory, and demonstrates the profound impact of interfacial roughness on this phenomenon.
