We report for the first time a microfluidic electrophoretic mobility reversal assay (MEMRA) for double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) detection using zinc-finger proteins (ZFPs) and a polyacrylamide-gel (PAG) sieving matrix. Microfluidic DNA analysis was actively studied because of its importance in biology and medicine. Most microfluidic DNA detection techniques rely on time-consuming denaturation and hybridization processes. To address this limitation, ZFP was employed as a novel affinity probe, which directly binds to a specific sequence of dsDNA without denaturation and renaturation. A mildly alkaline electrophoresis buffer (pH 8.6) was used for our MEMRA, instead of a strongly alkaline buffer (pH 10.75) for separating the ZFP–dsDNA complex from interfering species. At pH 8.6, the mobility of ZFP was reversed upon binding with dsDNA (complex pI = ~ 5.33), and unbound ZFP (pI = ~ 9.3) was excluded from loading. Therefore, the ZFP–dsDNA complex was detected without zone interferences. Furthermore, nonspecific interactions and band dispersion, observed in strongly alkaline buffer, were effectively mitigated in the MEMRA. The ZFP–dsDNA complex was fully separated (separation resolution ≥ 2.0) and detected rapidly (12–15 s at a separation distance of 160–240 μm) using on-chip photopatterned 3–16%T discontinuous PAG. The MEMRA performance was excellent, providing a detection limit of 50 pM and a detection range of 100 pM–500 nM for seb (Staphylococcus enterotoxin B) gene dsDNA oligonucleotides. We expect that our ZFP-based MEMRA will find broad utility in biology and medicine where the rapid, specific, and quantitative detection of dsDNA is of paramount importance.

Transgenic Arabidopsis thaliana expressing an anti-rabies monoclonal antibody (mAb), SO57, was obtained using Agrobacterium-mediated floral dip transformation. The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) retention signal Lys-Asp-Glu-Leu (KDEL) was tagged to the C-terminus of the anti-rabies mAb heavy chain to localize the mAb to the ER and enhance its accumulation. When the inaccurately folded proteins accumulated in the ER exceed its storage capacity, it results in stress that can affect plant development and growth. We generated T1 transformants and obtained homozygous T3 seeds from transgenic Arabidopsis to investigate the effect of KDEL on plant growth. The germination rate did not significantly differ between plants expressing mAb SO57 without KDEL (SO plant) and mAb SO57 with KDEL (SOK plant). The primary roots of SOK agar media grown plants were slightly shorter than those of SO plants. Transcriptomic analysis showed that expression of all 11 ER stress-related genes were not significantly changed in SOK plants relative to SO plants. SOK plants showed approximately three-fold higher mAb expression levels than those of SO plants. Consequently, the purified mAb amount per unit of SOK plant biomass was approximately three times higher than that of SO plants. A neutralization assay revealed that both plants exhibited efficient rapid fluorescent focus inhibition test values against the rabies virus relative to commercially available human rabies immunoglobulins. KDEL did not upregulate ER stress-related genes; therefore, the enhanced production of the mAb did not affect plant growth. Thus, KDEL fusion is recommended for enhancing mAb production in plant systems.

OBJECTIVES To investigate the efficacy of health coaching and a web-based program on survivor physical activity (PA), weight, and distress management among stomach, colon, lung and breast cancer patients. METHODS This randomised, controlled, 1-year trial conducted in five hospitals recruited cancer survivors within 2 months of completing primary cancer treatment who had not met ≥1 of these behavioural goals: (i) conducting moderate PA for at least 150 minutes/week or strenuous exercise for over 75 minutes per week or, in the case of lung cancer patients, low or moderate intensity exercise for over 12.5 MET per week, (ii) maintaining normal weight, and (iii) attaining a score >72 in the Post Traumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI). Participants were randomly assigned to one of three groups: the control group, a web-only group, or a health coaching + web group. The primary endpoint was based on a composite of PA, weight, and PTGI score at 12 months. RESULTS Patients in the health coaching + web group (difference = 6.6%, P = .010) and the web-only group (difference = 5.9%, P = .031) had greater overall improvements across the three-outcome composite than the control group. Our study aimed to assess the association between physical function and quality of life (QOL) with physical activity among non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) survivors. Participants were 92 NSCLC survivors. Physical activity was assessed by a self-report with physiatrist’s interview and the Korean version of the short form of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ-SF). All participants were required to perform three standardized fitness tests. The Korean version of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire Core 30 (EORTC QLQ-C30) was used to assess QOL. Factors associated with physical functioning and QOL were determined using multiple linear regression. A significant correlation between metabolic equivalent task minutes per week (MET-min/wk) and aerobic fitness was found (r = 0.277, p = 0.008). Factors associated with aerobic fitness include gender, age, and MET-min/wk. The meeting physical activity guideline group was also a factor associated with aerobic fitness. In the QOL aspect, a significant correlation between MET-min/wk and some QOL score was found. The meeting physical activity guideline group was a factor associated with QOL (global health status, physical function, and role function), not total MET-min/wk. Increased physical activity was associated with higher aerobic fitness and QOL. Engagement in physical activity that met physical activity guidelines was a factor related to aerobic fitness and better QOL in some domains. To improve aspects of aerobic fitness and QOL, we may consider the pattern of physical activity, including regular participation and intensity, rather than total physical activity including basal activity.

Objective Minimizing residual tumors is one of the most important prognostic factors in the management of advanced ovarian cancer [1]. In ovarian cancer patients with cardiophrenic lymph node (LN) metastases, transabdominal cardiophrenic lymph node dissection (CPLND) has been performed along with the surgery on the primary site [2]. However, CPLND for the complicated locations in the thoracic cavity is still technically challenging. This video aims to share our surgical technique for the transabdominal CPLND. Methods A 60-year-old woman who presented with suspicious bilateral ovarian cancer was hospitalized for cytoreductive surgery. Preoperative CT demonstrated peritoneal seeding and multiple LN metastases including right anterior, lateral, posterior, and left anterior cardiophrenic LNs. The gynecology and general surgery team underwent hysterectomy, bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, supracolic omentectomy, lower anterior resection, right diaphragmatic and bladder peritonectomy, pelvic and paraaortic LN dissection, and appendectomy. The thoracic surgeon took over the operation because the pelvic cavity was regarded as R0. CPLND was performed by transabdominal, subxiphoid approach. The procedure is narrated in the video. Results Complete clearance of CPLN leaving no gross residual disease was possible without complication. A long, transverse incision of the anterior diaphragm was closed with a 1-0 polypropylene in the way of double layered continuous running suture and 8 times ties for the final knot. Conclusion Transabdominal CPLND can be used safely and effectively without change of patient's position and with minimal diaphragmatic injury. However, this approach may be unfeasible for metastatic internal mammary LN dissection and still needs meticulous surgical skills to avoid complications.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to compare lung perfusion scan with single photon emission computed tomography/computed tomography (SPECT/CT) for the evaluation of lung function and to elucidate the most appropriate modality for the prediction of postoperative lung function in patients with lung cancer. METHODS: A total of 181 patients underwent Tc-99m macroaggregated albumin lung perfusion scan and SPECT/CT to examine the ratio of diseased lung and diseased lobe. Forty-one patients with lung cancer underwent both preoperative and postoperative pulmonary function tests within 1 month to predict postoperative pulmonary function. Predicted postoperative forced expiratory volume in 1 s (ppoFEV(1)) was calculated by the % radioactivity of lung perfusion scan and SPECT, and the % volume of the residual lung, assessed on CT. RESULTS: The ratios of diseased lung as seen on lung perfusion scan and SPECT showed significant correlation, but neither modality correlated with CT. The ratios of the diseased lung and diseased lobe based on CT were higher than the ratios based on either perfusion scan or SPECT, because CT overestimated the function of the diseased area. The lobar ratio of both upper lobes was lower based on the perfusion scan than on SPECT but was higher for both lower lobes. Actual postoperative FEV(1) showed significant correlation with ppoFEV(1) based on lung perfusion SPECT and perfusion scan. CONCLUSIONS: We suggest SPECT/CT as the primary modality of choice for the assessment of the ratio of diseased lung area. Both perfusion scan and SPECT/CT can be used for the prediction of postoperative lung function.

Introduction: The efficacy of telemedicine in cancer survivors is uncertain. The Smart After-care Program (SAP), which is an interactive, smartphone-based remote health monitoring system, was developed to help individual patients manage their health after leaving the hospital. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of our remote health care program for lung cancer patients. Methods We enrolled 50 lung cancer patients. Self-monitoring devices were supplied to all patients, who were instructed to enter their daily vital signs and subjective symptoms to the Smart After-care app. The app also provided information about rehabilitation exercises and a healthy diet for lung cancer patients. All patients received telephone health counseling once a week and visited an outpatient clinic on the 6th and 12th week to assess satisfaction with the SAP and changes in quality of life and physical performance. Results Overall satisfaction with the SAP was very high (very good, 61.9%; good, 26.2%). In the multivariate analysis for factors affecting satisfaction, the distance between the patient’s residence and the hospital was the only independent factor (p = 0.013). Quality of life was improved in all functional scales (p p = 0.012). Two-minute walk distance was also significantly improved (p = 0.028). Conclusion This study demonstrated that the SAP was acceptable among and supportive of patients with reduced pulmonary function after lung cancer treatment. The study proved that the SAP was more useful for patients living far away from a hospital.

Peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) seeds were germinated to investigate the effect of the fermentation period of oak tree sawdust on germination viability and seedling characteristics. Its germination rate, seedling weight, length, and total vigor index were assessed. The seeds were sown in oak tree sawdust fermented for 0, 30, 45, and 60 days. The germination rates of the seeds in fermented sawdust were significantly different. The seeds in the 45-day fermented sawdust produced the heaviest biomass weight (4.6 g) with the longest true leaf (1.7 cm) and hypocotyl (3.4 cm) resulting in the highest total vigor index (925.8). In contrast, seeds in 0-day fermented sawdust had the lowest total vigor index (18.3). Microbiome analysis showed that the microbial community in the sawdust changed as the fermentation progressed, indicating that the microbial community seems to affect seed germination physiology. Taken together, 45-day fermented sawdust is recommended for optimal peanut seed germination and seedling growth.

Background and PurposeWe compared treatment outcomes and toxicities of photon radiotherapy versus proton beam therapy (PBT) and evaluated radiation field effects for T1–3 squamous cell carcinoma of the thoracic esophagus (EC) without lymph node metastasis.MethodsMedical records of 77 patients with T1–3N0M0 thoracic EC treated with radiotherapy between 2011 and 2019 were retrospectively analyzed. Among these patients, 61 (79.2%) individuals had T1 EC. The initial clinical target volume encompassed the whole esophagus with or without supraclavicular and/or abdominal lymph nodes (extended-field radiotherapy; 67 patients, 87.0%) or the area 3–5 cm craniocaudally and 1–2 cm radially from the gross tumor volume (involved-field radiotherapy; 10 patients, 13.0%). The final clinical target volume included margins of at least 1 cm from the gross tumor volume, with total radiation doses of 50–66 (median, 66) cobalt gray equivalent. Three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy, intensity-modulated radiotherapy, and PBT were used in twenty-four, five, and forty-eight patients, respectively. Concurrent chemotherapy was administered to 17 (22.0%) patients overall and only five (8.0%) T1 patients.ResultsPBT showed significantly lower lung and heart radiation exposure in mean dose, V5, V10, V20, and V30 than photon radiotherapy. The median follow-up for all patients was 46 (interquartile range, 22–72) months. The 5-year progression-free survival and overall survival rates were 56.5 and 64.9%, respectively, with no significant survival difference between photon radiotherapy and PBT. In patients with T1 EC, 5-year progression-free survival and overall survival rates were 62.6 and 73.5%, respectively.ConclusionsExtended-field radiotherapy using modern radiotherapy techniques without chemotherapy showed satisfactory clinical outcomes for lymph node-negative T1 EC.

Micro-scale magnetic beads are widely used for isolation of proteins, DNA, and cells, leading to the development of in vitro diagnostics. Efficient isolation of target biomolecules is one of the keys to developing a simple and rapid point-of-care diagnostic. A zinc finger protein (ZFP) is a double-stranded (ds) DNA-binding domain, providing a useful scaffold for direct reading of the sequence information. Here, we utilized two engineered ZFPs (Stx2-268 and SEB-435) to detect the Shiga toxin (stx2) gene and the staphylococcal enterotoxin B (seb) gene present in foodborne pathogens, Escherichia coli O157 and Staphylococcus aureus, respectively. Engineered ZFPs are immobilized on a paramagnetic bead as a detection platform to efficiently isolate the target dsDNA-ZFP bound complex. The small paramagnetic beads provide a high surface area to volume ratio, allowing more ZFPs to be immobilized on the beads, which leads to increased target DNA detection. The fluorescence signal was measured upon ZFP binding to fluorophore-labeled target dsDNA. In this study, our system provided a detection limit of ≤ 60 fmol and demonstrated high specificity with multiplexing capability, suggesting a potential for development into a simple and reliable diagnostic for detecting multiple pathogens without target amplification.

Accumulating evidence reveals the association between the risk of never-smoker lung cancer and family history of cancer. However, the clinicogenomic effect of family history of cancer in never-smoker lung cancer remains unknown.We screened 3,241 lung cancer patients who (a) underwent curative resection at National Cancer Center (Goyang, Korea) between 2001-2014, and (b) completed a pre-designed interview about family/smoking history at the time of diagnosis and identified 604 female never smoker lung adenocarcinoma. A positive family history of cancer [categorized as pulmonary cancer (FH-PC) or non-pulmonary cancer (FH-NPC)] was defined as a self-reported history of cancer in first-degree relatives. Survival data were followed up until January 2017. Multiplexed targeted next-generation sequencing was performed for genetic profiling.Of 604 patients, 29.1% (n = 176) had a FH, including 132 (21.9%) with FH-NPC and 44 (7.3%) with FH-PC. Patients with the FH-NPC had a higher proportion of young patients (≤45 years) than those without the FH-NPC (FH-NPC, FH-PC, and no FH; 13.6%, 2.3%, and 8.2%, respectively; P = 0.032). Patients with the FH-NPC had an increased risk of recurrence (hazard ratio [HR]: 1.90; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.40-2.56; P0.001) and death (HR: 1.67; 95% CI: 1.18-2.37; P=0.004). In contrast, the FH-PC had no prognostic effect on recurrence (HR: 1.23; 95% CI: 0.71-2.15; P = 0.456) and death (HR: 0.93; 95% CI: 0.45-1.91; P=0.838). Among three driver oncogene alterations, EGFR mutation was significantly associated with the FH-PC (53.8%, 84.1%, and 65.8%, respectively; P = 0.016), ALK/ROS1/RET fusions was significantly associated with the FH-NPC (13.7%, 0.0%, and 5.0%, respectively; P = 0.004), but KRAS mutation was not associated with any type of the FH (13.8% vs. 6.0% vs. 7.8%, respectively; P = 0.288).The type of family history of cancer was associated with distinct clinocogenomic subtypes and prognosis of never-smoker lung adenocarcinoma.

Cardiovascular Implantable Electronic Devices (CIEDs) are routinely implanted to treat various types of arrhythmia. However, conventional pacing algorithms may not be able to provide optimal treatment for the patients with Heart Failure (HF) and evidence suggests negative outcomes. In this paper, we introduce a formal pacemaker model that can restore heart-lung synchronization, which may bring therapeutic benefits to the patient with chronic HF. We use valued Synchronous Discrete Timed Automata (SDTA) to describe the timing requirements of the device, which is then translated into Promela for formal verification through a set of rules which are defined to maintain the synchronous semantics. The safety-critical properties are then verified using the model checker SPIN. We show that the SDTA model can be verified more efficiently than conventional approaches with pure Timed Automata (TA). Animal test results show that the pacing rates are synchronized with the respiratory cycles. In particular, the functional safety is ensured under various respiratory conditions. This work yields, for the first time, a formal model of pacing device to reinstate heart rate variability for HF patients.

BACKGROUND: This study assessed the prognostic significance of metastatic lymph node size (MLNS) and extranodal extension (EN) in patients with node-positive lung adenocarcinoma (ADC). METHODS: Prognostic factors influencing survival were analyzed, including age, sex, extent of operation, T- and N-stage, size of tumor, postoperative chemotherapy, presence of EN, and MLNS (>7.0 vs. ≤7.0 mm). RESULTS: Three hundred seventy-five patients met the inclusion criteria were enrolled (mean age: 59.8±10.5 years). Increasing MLNS was significantly correlated with large tumor size (P=0.015), advanced N status (P7.0 mm/EN (−); and Group C, MLNS >7.0 mm/EN (+). Background: Proton beam therapy (PBT), as a neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT) modality, is expected to result in better outcomes than photon-based radiotherapy (RT) for esophageal cancer, particularly adenocarcinoma. This study reports the results of nCRT for locally advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) using both modalities. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the records of patients who underwent nCRT for ESCC between 2001 and 2020. A median of 41.4 Gy or cobalt gray equivalents of radiation was delivered using either photons or protons, with concurrent chemotherapy. Dosimetric and clinical parameters were compared between the two groups. Results: Of the 31 patients, the lungs and heart of the proton group (n = 15) were exposed to significantly less radiation compared to the photon group (n = 16). No significant differences in short-term postoperative outcomes or lymphocyte count were observed between the groups, and there were no significant differences between the photon and proton groups in 2-year overall survival (67.8% vs. 68.6%, p = 0.867) or 2-year disease-free survival (33.3% vs. 34.5%, p = 0.749), with a median follow-up of 17 months. Conclusions: PBT provided a significant dosimetric benefit over photon-based RT during nCRT for ESCC; however, it did not improve clinical outcomes.

The primary goal of this study was to evaluate the major roles of health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in a 5-year lung cancer survival prediction model using machine learning techniques (MLTs). The predictive performances of the models were compared with data from 809 survivors who underwent lung cancer surgery. Each of the modeling technique was applied to two feature sets: feature set 1 included clinical and sociodemographic variables, and feature set 2 added HRQOL factors to the variables from feature set 1. One of each developed prediction model was trained with the decision tree (DT), logistic regression (LR), bagging, random forest (RF), and adaptive boosting (AdaBoost) methods, and then, the best algorithm for modeling was determined. The models’ performances were compared using fivefold cross-validation. For feature set 1, there were no significant differences in model accuracies (ranging from 0.647 to 0.713). Among the models in feature set 2, the AdaBoost and RF models outperformed the other prognostic models [area under the curve (AUC) = 0.850, 0.898, 0.981, 0.966, and 0.949 for the DT, LR, bagging, RF and AdaBoost models, respectively] in the test set. Overall, 5-year disease-free lung cancer survival prediction models with MLTs that included HRQOL as well as clinical variables improved predictive performance.

Printed electronics refers to the technology of fabricating electronic devices by applying the printing process method to thin films. Printed electronics is regarded as a promising industry of the future because of its relatively low cost, simple process, and high mass production capacity, which are all superior to existing manufacturing methods. Roll-to-roll printing is a suitable technology for printed electronics with large-scale and high-speed mass production. To commercialize roll-to-roll printing technology, it is necessary to develop technology for position control of the web, tension control of the web, printing pressure control, and functional ink development. Among them, the printing pressure uniformization by the printing pressure control is an important factor that significantly affects the printing quality. In the roll-to-roll printing process, the functional ink is transferred by the nip generated by the printing pressure. That is, if the nip can be kept uniform by applying the printing pressure uniformly, the uniformity of the line width and thickness of the printed pattern is improved. This nip occurs on a line connecting the geometric center of the two rolls, and the centers of the two rolls are on the orbit line by each roll runout. Therefore, the print pressure can be estimated through the change in the inter-center distance of the rolls caused by the roll runout. In this study, we propose a method of printing pressure uniformization using roll runout. After establishing initial conditions that minimize change in printing pressure, load cells are used to estimate and verify the initial conditions that minimized the change in the inter-center distance of rolls, and pressure sensitive paper is used to verify whether the actual printing pressure is minimized.

Purpose To evaluate the efficacy and safety of extended-field radiation therapy for patients with thoracic superficial esophageal cancer (SEC). Materials and Methods From May 2007 to October 2016, a total of 24 patients with thoracic SEC (T1a and T1b) who underwent definitive radiotherapy and were analyzed retrospectively. The median total radiotherapy dose was 64 Gy (range, 54 to 66 Gy) in conventional fractionation. All 24 patients received radiotherapy to whole thoracic esophagus and 23 patients received elective nodal irradiation. The supraclavicular lymph nodes, the celiac lymph nodes, and both of those nodal areas were included in 11, 3, and 9 patients, respectively. Results The median follow-up duration was 28.7 months (range 7.9 to 108.0 months). The 3-year overall survival, local control, and progression-free survival rates were 95.2%, 89.7%, and 78.7%, respectively. There were 5 patients (20.8%) with progression of disease, 2 local failures (8.3%) and 3 (12.5%) regional failures. Three patients also experienced distant metastasis and had died of disease progression. There were no treatment-related toxicities of grade 3 or higher. Conclusion Definitive extended-field radiotherapy for thoracic SEC showed durable disease control rates in medically inoperable and endoscopically unfit patients. Even extended-field radiotherapy with elective nodal irradiation was safe without grade 3 or 4 toxicities.

Background Minimally invasive esophagectomy theoretically offers advantages compared with open esophagectomy (OE). The aim of this study was to compare the early- and mid-term outcomes between video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) esophagectomy (VE) and OE in patients with esophageal cancer. Methods Between November 2011 and July 2015, a total of 172 patients were divided into two groups depending on the method of esophagectomy: the VE group (n=42) and the OE group (n=130). A propensity analysis that incorporated perioperative variables, such as age, sex, preoperative pulmonary function, Charlson comorbidity index, tumor location, histologic grade of the tumor, pathologic stage and operative procedure (Ivor Lewis or McKeown) was performed, and postoperative outcomes were compared. Results Matching based on propensity scores produced 42 patients in each group for the analysis. After propensity matching, there were only two operative mortalities in the OE group, and both died of postoperative pneumonia. The overall incidence of postoperative complications was 38.1% (16 of 42) and 57.1% (24 of 42) in the VE group and in the OE group, respectively (P=0.088). The incidence of pulmonary complications was lower in the VE group than in the OE group (9.5% vs. 40.5%, P=0.004). The 2-year overall survival and disease-free survival were not different between the two groups (74.4% and 69.5% in the VE group, 69.5% and 69.8% in the OE group, P=0.865 and P=0.513, respectively). Conclusions In select patients, superior short-term surgical results and equal oncological outcomes were achieved with VE compared with OE.

Engineered DNA-binding domains provide a powerful technology for numerous biomedical studies due to their ability to recognize specific DNA sequences. Zinc fingers (ZF) are one of the most common DNA-binding domains and have been extensively studied for a variety of applications, such as gene regulation, genome engineering and diagnostics. Another novel DNA-binding domain known as a transcriptional activator-like effector (TALE) has been more recently discovered, which has a previously undescribed DNA-binding mode. Due to their modular architecture and flexibility, TALEs have been rapidly developed into artificial gene targeting reagents. Here, we describe the methods used to design these DNA-binding proteins and their key applications in biomedical research.

With the rise of service innovation, service is no longer considered peripheral to the business environment, and is increasingly being seen as a core offering to customers. Technology has played a central role in the rise of service innovation, but previous studies on service technology have discussed mostly qualitative approaches. For this reason, the concept of “a service technology” has not been properly defined based on the large amount of empirical evidence. To address this limitation, we define and characterize service technologies using patents to come up with a consensus and adopt a five-step process that embraces three viewpoints on the notion of service technology: the industry, patent, and technology perspectives. First, service industries are defined based on their International Standard Industrial Classification system categories, as prepared by the United Nations Statistics Division. Second, relevant service patents are extracted from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office database for each service industry. Third, the International Patent Classification classes are obtained from these collected patents to investigate the technologies employed in service industries. Fourth, service technologies are defined and classified into six categories based on this patent classification analysis. Finally, the technological concentration and generality characteristics of each technology are analyzed.

Three-dimensional (3D) carbon-network-supported Si/silicide nanocomposite anodes with controllable voids are prepared using ferrosilicon, NaCl, and polyfurfuryl alcohol (PFA) resin as the starting materials. Analysis of the microstructures and the phase compositions confirms the complete removal of NaCl and the consequent formation of voids supported by a glassy carbon network, residing in between the nanostructured Si/silicide composite particles. Coin-half cell tests demonstrate the significantly improved cycling performance of the Si/silicide/carbon nanocomposites compared with that of the alloy powder without controllable voids. The electrode prepared from the coated alloy with voids maintains approximately 66% of its initial capacity after 100 cycles and its Coulombic efficiency rapidly increases to 99% after several cycles. This study reports a simple and effective method for preparing nanocrystalline Si embedded carbon composites as a high-capacity anode material for Li-ion batteries. Micron-sized Si and Nb 2 O 5 powders were used as starting materials for high-energy mechanical milling (HEMM) process. During the HEMM operation, Si particles obtained oxygen from Nb 2 O 5 ; the nanocrystalline Si embedded SiO x phase was simultaneously created; and commmercial monoclinic Nb 2 O 5 was also transformed to orthorhombic Nb 2 O 5 with partial reduction. Results show that a nano Si embedded SiO x -niobium oxides-carbon composite was successfully synthesized. Material characterization of the composite was performed by X-ray diffraction analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and electron microscopies. Electrochemical test results demonstrate that the composite electrode has a greatly enhanced performance with a reversible capacity of about 800 mAh g −1 and excellent capacity retention of up to 200 cycles. This improvement can be attributed to the in-situ formation of the nanocrytalline Si embedded silicon suboxide phase with niobium oxides, which is dispersed in carbon matrix. It is considered that this finding will be useful in the preparation of robust Si-based anode materials for high-energy density Li-ion batteries.

Nanocrystalline Si-embedded SiOx-Al2O3 composite materials were synthesized by a high-energy mechanical milling method, and their potential as an anode material for Li-ion batteries was examined. The starting materials were amorphous SiO2 and Al metal powders. To increase the initial coulombic efficiency of the SiO2-based electrode materials, the amorphous SiO2 was reduced by Al. The reducing medium was decided by calculating the thermodynamic formation energy. During the highenergy milling process, SiO2 was partially reduced and Al was simultaneously oxidized to aluminum oxide, yielding nano Si-embedded composite. The composite was characterized by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and high-resolution transmission microscopy. In electrochemical tests, the reversible capacity of the composite electrode was approximately 850 mAh g-1 with enhanced initial coulombic efficiency of 66%. This performance of the composite electrode was achieved not through carbon incorporation, but through the formation of Si-embedded nanocomposites.
