Abstract

Peripheral T-cell lymphomas (PTCLs) are a heterogeneous group of rare lymphoid malignancies that mostly have poor prognoses with currently available treatments. Upfront consolidation with autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) is frequently carried out, but its efficacy has never been investigated in randomized trials. We designed a multicenter, international, retrospective study with the main objective of comparing progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) of patients with PTCL who underwent ASCT in complete remission (CR) after first-line chemotherapy with a control group who did not undergo ASCT. From the initial population of 286 registered patients, 174 patients with PTCL other than anaplastic large cell lymphoma, ALK-positive, deemed fit for ASCT at the time of diagnosis, and who were in CR or uncertain CR after induction therapy (CR1) were included in our analysis. 103 patients underwent ASCT, whereas 71 did not, in most cases (n=53) because the physician decided against it. With a median follow-up of 65.5 months, PFS was significantly better in the transplanted patients than in the non-transplanted group: 63% vs. 48% at 5 years (p=0.042). OS was significantly longer for ASCT patients in the subgroup with advanced stage at diagnosis (5-year OS: 70% vs. 50%, p=0.028). In the multivariate analysis, first-line ASCT was associated with significantly prolonged PFS (HR 0.57, 95% CI 0.35-0.93) and OS (HR 0.57, 95% CI 0.33-0.99). In conclusion, our study supports the use of ASCT as a consolidation strategy for patients with PTCL in CR1. These results should be confirmed in a prospective randomized study.

EHA Roadmap for European Hematology Research

Abstract

The European Hematology Association (EHA) Roadmap for European Hematology Research highlights major achievements in diagnosis and treatment of blood disorders and identifies the greatest unmet clinical and scientific needs in those areas to enable better funded, more focused European hematology research. Initiated by the EHA, around 300 experts contributed to the consensus document, which will help European policy makers, research funders, research organizations, researchers, and patient groups make better informed decisions on hematology research. It also aims to raise public awareness of the burden of blood disorders on European society, which purely in economic terms is estimated at ∈ European Hematology Association (EHA) Roadmap for European Hematology Research highlights major achievements in diagnosis and treatment of blood disorders and identifies the greatest unmet clinical and scientific needs in those areas to enable better fu treatments, sometimes in revolutionary ways. This progress highlights the potential of focused basic research programs such as this EHA Roadmap. The EHA Roadmap identifies nine ‘sections’ in hematology: normal hematopoiesis, malignant lymphoid and myeloid diseases, anemias and related diseases, platelet disorders, blood coagulation and hemostatic disorders, transfusion medicine, infections in hematology, and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. These sections span 60 smaller groups of diseases or disorders. The EHA Roadmap identifies priorities and needs across the field of hematology, including those to develop targeted therapies based on genomic profiling and chemical biology, to eradicate minimal residual malignant disease, and to develop cellular immunotherapies, combination treatments, gene therapies, hematopoietic stem cell treatments, and treatments that are better tolerated by elderly patients. © 2016 Ferrata Storti Foundation.

Abstract

The European Hematology Association (EHA) Roadmap for European Hematology Research highlights major achievements in diagnosis and treatment of blood disorders and identifies the greatest unmet clinical and scientific needs in those areas to enable better funded, more focused European hematology research. Initiated by the EHA, around 300 experts contributed to the consensus document, which will help European policy makers, research funders, research organizations, researchers, and patient groups make better informed decisions on hematology research. It also aims to raise public awareness of the burden of blood disorders on European society, which purely in economic terms is estimated at euro23 billion per year, a level of cost that is not matched in current European hematology research funding. In recent decades, hematology research has improved our fundamental understanding of the biology of blood disorders, and has improved diagnostics and treatments, sometimes in revolutionary ways. This progress highlights the potential of focused basic research programs such as this EHA Roadmap.The EHA Roadmap identifies nine 'sections' in hematology: normal hematopoiesis, malignant lymphoid and myeloid diseases, anemias and related diseases, platelet disorders, blood coagulation and hemostatic disorders, transfusion medicine, infections in hematology, and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. These sections span 60 smaller groups of diseases or disorders.The EHA Roadmap identifies priorities and needs across the field of hematology, including those to develop targeted therapies based on genomic profiling and chemical biology, to eradicate minimal residual malignant disease, and to develop cellular immunotherapies, combination treatments, gene therapies, hematopoietic stem cell treatments, and treatments that are better tolerated by elderly patients.

27th European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition; 2035-2038, The MWT back contact solar cell is the most similar device to conventional solar cells. Only two steps are necessary to be added to the process sequence of a conventional solar cell: the laser via drilling and the p-n junction isolation on the rear surface. This work shows technological advances for the industrial manufacturing of Metal Wrap Through (MWT) back contact solar cells, focusing mainly on new geometries for laser drilled via-holes and their characterization in terms of shunting, recombination and series resistance. Besides, an optimization of laser technologies for the contact isolation on the front and rear sides of the solar cell is carried out, identifying and quantifying the damage introduced by the laser.

25th European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition / 5th World Conference on Photovoltaic Energy Conversion, 6-10 September 2010, Valencia, Spain; 1997-2001, Inkjet printing is a technology which is very interesting in order to be applied to the metallization process to manufacture solar cells. This technique consists of the jetting of silver-content drops on the silicon wafers. By controlling thermal processes, number of passes, printing resolution and the characteristics of the drops of ink (silver concentration and drop volume) the metal fingers of the solar cell are obtained. These silver lines can give a good adherence and can improve electrical and geometrical characteristics compared to screen printing technology. The line width which can be obtained by using this technology is in the order of 40 μm, the line resistivity is near to the value of pure silver (1.55·10-6 Ω·cm²) and the specific contact resistivity is near to 1 mΩ·cm².

This paper analyzes the effect of the regions above the busbars, what give a relevant and not well studied mechanism of ohmic losses in back contact solar cells.

Abstract

A case is reported of a female patient of 38 years old, who ingested 160 pills of 100 mg of phenobarbital with the purpose of committing suicide, and who was founded in state of coma after 72 hours of being missed. The patient presented a state of deep coma, haemodynamic shock and later a pneumonia for rough aspiration. General measures and symptomatic treatment were applied, as well as urgent charcoal haemoperfusion. The toxicological examination was carried out by means of thin layer chromatographic techniques, colorimetric test and solid phase extraction (SPE) and gas chromatography mass spectrometry using selected ion monitoring (SIM). The results were positive to the presence of phenobarbital in urine and gastric content. The serum phenobarbital concentration was 479 μmol L-1 96 hours after the ingestion. After the sixth day of admission, her evolution was satisfactory because of the rapid toxicological diagnosis and the treatment with methods of renal and extra renal purification, in spite of the ingested quantity of 16 g. phenobarbital., Se presenta una paciente femenina, de 38 años de edad, que ingirió con fines suicidas 160 tabletas de 100 mg de fenobarbital y a las 72 horas de desaparecida fue encontrada en estado de coma. La paciente presentó coma profundo, shock hemodinámico y posteriormente una neumonía por bronco aspiración. Se aplicaron medidas generales y tratamiento sintomático además de hemocarboperfusión de urgencia. El examen toxicológico se realizó mediante técnicas de cromatografía en placa fina, seguidos de test colorimétrico y el empleo de extracción en fase sólida (SPE) y cromatografía gaseosa acoplada a detector de masas utilizando monitorización de iones seleccionados (SIM). Los resultados fueron positivos a la presencia de fenobarbital en orina y contenido gástrico. Los valores en sangre de fenobarbital fueron de 479 μmol L-1 96 horas tras la ingesta. Tras el sexto día de ingreso tuvo una evolución satisfactoria debido al rápido diagnóstico toxicológico y tratamiento con los métodos de depuración renal y extra renal, a pesar de la cantidad ingerida de 16 g.

Abstract

Eight patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma who were in clinical remission but showed residual masses after therapy were examined with magnetic resonance imaging at 1.5 T at the end of therapy, with the sequences TR/TE:500/35,500/70,2000/35 and 2000/70. Residual masses were found in lymphoid areas (7), spleen (3) and kidney (1). In three patients, T2 showed high signal intensity. Disease progressed in the following 1-3 months and active lymphoma was histologically identified. In the other five patients, T2 showed a very low signal intensity. One of them had a distant relapse in lymphoid areas but the remaining four patients are asymptomatic after a mean follow-up time of 13 months, suggesting that the lymphoma is cured and the mass inactive. We conclude that magnetic resonance imaging seems to distinguish active from non-active residual masses after treatment of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma patients otherwise in clinical remission. Abstract

The two monoclonal IgMs (IgM1 and IgM2) were characterized from a patient with Waldenström's macroglobulinaemia that resulted in a gammapathy. Heavy and light chains were isolated from the IgM. The complete primary structure of the two light chains and the NH2-terminal region of the two heavy chain molecules were determined. The sequence data indicated that the heavy and light chains from both IgMs belong to the same (III and II) lambda subgroups. By testing their antibody activity it was found by immunofluorescence and immunoblotting that only IgM2 reacts with an intermediate filament protein. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We report two patients with large-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphomas who were treated with intensive chemotherapy (MACOP-B), and in whom large isolated intraparenchymal masses (splenic in one case, renal in the other) were found with computed tomography after clinical remission. It was found at surgery that both masses were constituted by acellular necrotic material, without tumoral infiltration and limited by fibrous tissue. The finding of these residual masses in patients in remission raises problems of approach, as they may be nontumoral and not require new therapy. At present, until new radiological or biochemical markers are available, a judicious clinical attitude should be taken, with radiological control of the evolution of the masses and reserving surgery only for those cases with progression, diagnostic doubts, or patient's decision to know his real status.

Abstract

A patient with common variable immunodeficiency developed lymphoid nodular hyperplasia and, subsequently, a follicular non-Hodgkin lymphoma with excellent response to chemotherapy. The patient remained in remission after 4 years. The very unusual type of this lymphoma and its localization are discussed, and the possible relations between these different conditions as a single spectrum of B lymphocyte are analyzed.
