Abstract

Open conduit volcanoes erupt with the highest frequency on Earth. Their activity is characterized by an outgassing flux that largely exceeds the gas that could be released by the erupted magma; and by frequent small explosions intercalated by larger events that pose a significant risk to locals, tourists, and scientists. Thus, identifying the signs of an impending larger explosion is of utmost importance for the mitigation of volcanic hazard. Larger explosive events have been associated with the sudden ascent of volatile rich magmas, however, where and why magma accumulates within the plumbing system remains unclear. Here we show that the interaction between CO2‐rich fluids and magma spontaneously leads to the accumulation of volatile‐rich, low density and gravitationally unstable magma at depth, without the requirement of permeability barriers. CO2‐flushing forces the exsolution of water and the increase of magma viscosity, which proceeds from the bottom of the magma column upward. This rheological configuration unavoidably leads to the progressive thickening of a gas‐rich and low density (i.e., gravitationally unstable) layer at the bottom of the feeding system. Our calculations account for observations, gas monitoring and petrological data; moreover, they provide a basis to trace the approach to deeply triggered large or paroxysmal eruptions and estimate their size from monitoring data. Our model is finally applied to Stromboli volcano, an emblematic example of open conduit volcano, but can be applied to any other open conduit volcano globally and offers a framework to anticipate the occurrence of unexpectedly large eruptions. Open conduit volcanoes, of which Stromboli is an emblematic example, erupt with the highest frequency on Earth. The activity at Stromboli is characterised by frequent small explosions intercalated by larger events that pose a significant risk to local populations, tourists, and scientists. Thus, identifying the signs of an impending larger explosion is of outmost importance for the mitigation of volcanic hazard. 16. On modeling the excitation of infrasound and acoustic-gravity waves from volcanic explosions

Abstract

Large volcanic explosions are well known to be capable of exciting a range of atmospheric waves including sound, infrasound, and acoustic-gravity waves (AGW), that can be recorded at very large distances from the source. Understanding their generation and propagation is important to correctly interpret recorded signals and retrieve source parameters, as well as to study atmospheric phenomena of the upper layers of the atmosphere, such as the formation of ionospheric traveling disturbances associated with propagating Lamb waves. Most studies rely on models based on a simplified (linearized) version of the Navier-Stokes equations that do not allow to fully investigate the effects due to the complexity of volcanic sources (presence of gas particle mixtures, shock waves, directivity of the volcanic jet) and to non-linear propagation phenomena. Here, we present preliminary results and efforts to test, within the open-source MagmaFOAM framework, based on the OpenFOAM library, a numerical model that solves the full set of equations for compressible fluids, including the presence of multiple phases (e.g. gas-particles) and components (e.g. air-water vapor). The model is able to consider the relatively large atmospheric computational domains that are required to study AGW. The validated model may provide the opportunity to investigate the generated wavefield for selected eruption source processes and scenarios as well as to test simplified source models., The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)

Abstract

Ascent of primitive magmas from depth into shallow, partially degassed reservoirs is commonly assumed to be a viable eruption trigger. The resulting processes of convection and mixing have played an important role both in pre- and syn-eruptive stages in many eruptions of different sizes at the unrest Campi Flegrei caldera in Southern Italy. We performed numerical simulations of magma chamber replenishment referring to an archetypal case whereby a shallow, small magma chamber containing degassed phonolite is invaded by volatile-rich shoshonitic magma coming from a deeper, larger reservoir. The system evolution is driven by buoyancy, as the magma entering the shallower chamber is less dense than the degassed, resident phonolite. The evolution in space and time of physical quantities such as pressure, gas content and density is highly heterogeneous; nonetheless, an overall decreasing exponential trend in time can be observed and characterizes the efficiency of the whole process. The same exponentially decreasing trend can be observed in the amplitude of the synthetic ground deformation signals (seismicity over the whole frequency spectrum) calculated from the results of the magmatic dynamics. Depending on the initial and boundary conditions explored, such as chamber geometry or density contrast, the time constant thus the inferred duration of the process can vary. An initial vigorous phase of convection and mixing among the two magma types reaches an asymptotic stage after a few hours to half a day. Independently, the evolution of pressure in the magmatic system also depends on the initial and boundary conditions, leading either to eruption-favorable conditions or not. Relating the time scales for convective processes to be effective with their outcomes in terms of stresses at the boundaries of the magmatic system can substantially improve our ability to forecast the evolution of volcanic unrest crises worldwide.

Abstract

Processes occurring in volcanic conduits, the pathways through which magma travels from its storage region to the surface, have a fundamental control on the nature of eruptions and associated phenomena. It has been well established that magma flows, crystallizes, degasses, and fragments in conduits, that fluids migrate in and out of conduits, and that seismic and acoustic waves are generated and travel within conduits. A better understanding of volcanic conduits and related processes is of paramount importance for improving eruption forecasting, volcanic hazard assessment and risk mitigation. However, despite escalating advances in the characterization of individual conduit processes, our understanding of their mutual interactions and the consequent control on volcanic activity is still limited. With the purpose of addressing this topic, a multidisciplinary workshop led by a group of international scientists was hosted from 25 to 27 October 2014 by the Pisa branch of the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia under the sponsorship of the MeMoVolc Research Networking Programme of the European Science Foundation. The workshop brought together the experimental, theoretical, and observational communities devoted to volcanological research. After 3 days of oral and poster presentations, breakout sessions, and plenary discussions, the participants identified three main outstanding issues common to experimental, analytical, numerical, and observational volcanology: unsteadiness (or transience), disequilibrium, and uncertainty. A key outcome of the workshop was to identify the specific knowledge areas in which exchange of information among the sub-disciplines would lead to efficient progress in addressing these three main outstanding issues. It was clear that multidisciplinary collaboration of this sort is essential for progressing the state of the art in understanding of conduit magma dynamics and eruption behavior. Abstract

Both Dasision and ENESTnd trials had many exclusion criteria, with a possible selection bias compared with the real-life. To address the impact of this bias on the first-line treatment in the current clinical practice, we revised 207 unselected newly diagnosed chronic phase chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) patients [M/F 108/99, median age 58.8 years, interquartile range 42.3-70.2] treated with front-line imatinib from June 2002 to June 2013 at our Institution, and evaluated how many of them would have been excluded from enrolment in the two trials. Twenty-eight patients (13.5%) should have been excluded by both trials because of polycomorbidities (12), severe cardiomyopathy (five), age > 80 with frailty (three), drug abuse (two) or other severe concomitant diseases (six). In addition, eight patients should have been excluded by Dasision due to isolated chronic obstructive broncopulmonar disease, and 19 patients should have been excluded by ENESTnd due to isolated diabetes (10), arrhythmia (four), acute myocardial infarction > 6 months before CML diagnosis (two), chronic pancreatic disease (two) and peripheral arterial obstructive disease (one). On the whole, 36 patients (17.4%) would have been excluded by Dasision trial and 47 (22.7%) by ENESTnd trial. The patients potentially not eligible for both trials were significantly older and with imatinib had a worse outcome compared with patients potentially eligible. Our data highlight that an automatic transposition of results available in clinical controlled trials into the frontline real-life management of CML patients should be regarded with caution. Abstract

Background In diffuse large B-cell lymphomas, gene expression profiling studies attributed a major biologic role to non-neoplastic cells of the tumour microenvironment as its composition and characteristics were shown to predict survival. In particular, the expression of selected genes encoding components of the extracellular matrix was reported to be associated with clinical outcome. Nevertheless, the translation of these data into robust, routinely applicable immunohistochemical markers is still warranted. Therefore, in this study, we analysed the combination of the expression of the extracellular matrix components Fibronectin and SPARC on formalin-fixed paraffin embedded tissue derived from 173 patients with DLBCL in order to recapitulate gene expression profiling data. Results The expression of Fibronectin and SPARC was detected in 77/173 (44.5%) and 125/173 (72.3%) cases, respectively, and 55/173 (31.8%) cases were double positive. Patients with lymphomas expressing Fibronectin showed significantly longer overall survival when compared to negative ones (6.3 versus 3.6 years). Moreover, patients with double positive lymphomas also presented with significantly longer overall survival when compared with the remaining cases (11.6 versus 3.6 years) and this combined expression of both markers results in a better association with overall survival data than the expression of SPARC or Fibronectin taken separately (Hazard ratio 0.41, 95% confidence interval 0.17 to 0.95, p = 0.037). Finally, neither Fibronectin nor SPARC expression was associated with any of the collected clinico-pathological parameters. Conclusions The combined immunohistochemical assessment of Fibronectin and SPARC, two components of the extracellular matrix, represents an important tool for the prediction of survival in diffuse large B-cell lymphomas. Our study suggests that translation of gene expression profiling data on tumour microenvironment into routinely applicable immunohistochemical markers
