Glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) is among the strongest dopamine neuron function- and survival-promoting factors known. Due to this reason, it has clinical relevance in dopamine disorders such as Parkinson's disease and schizophrenia. In the striatum, GDNF is exclusively expressed in interneurons, which make up only about 0.6% of striatal cells. Despite clinical significance, histological analysis of striatal GDNF system arborization and relevance to incoming dopamine axons, which bear its receptor RET, has remained enigmatic. This is mainly due to the lack of antibodies able to visualize GDNF- and RET-positive cellular processes; here, we overcome this problem by using knock-in marker alleles. We find that GDNF neurons chemoattract RET+ axons at least seven times farther in distance than medium spiny neurons (MSNs), which make up 95% of striatal neurons. Furthermore, we provide evidence that tyrosine hydroxylase, the rate-limiting enzyme in dopamine synthesis, is enriched towards GDNF neurons in the dopamine axons. Finally, we find that GDNF neuron arborizations occupy approximately only twelve times less striatal volume than 135 times more abundant MSNs. This study examined the potential role of critical reflection as a tool to support pre-service early childhood teacher interns in understanding and questioning pedagogical choices witnessed in their preschool internships while developing their own socially responsible teaching capacity. This study contributes to the field of critical reflection in teacher education by emphasizing an analysis of power, using Patricia Hill Collins' matrices of power to understand the complexities of systemic injustices and identify potential solutions. The authors conducted an analysis of students' critical reflections, which were completed weekly during their quarter-long preschool internship. The authors found that a critical analytic lens, using power, created intentional space to pause and expand interpretations of unequal and inequitable dynamics within the students' preschool internship experiences, and had the potential to impact their subsequent pedagogical decisions. These findings hold the possibility for teacher preparation programs to bolster students' reflective praxis and seed justice-oriented possibilities in early childhood education. Aim: The climate variability hypothesis proposes that species subjected to wide variation in climatic conditions will evolve wider niches, resulting in larger distributions. We test this hypothesis in tropical plants across a broad elevational gradient; specifically, we use a species‐level approach to evaluate whether elevational range sizes are explained by the levels of thermal variability experienced by species. Location: Central Andes. Time Period: Present day. Taxon: Woody plants. Methods: Combining data from 479 forest plots, we determined the elevational distributions of nearly 2300 species along an elevational gradient (~209–3800 m). For each species, we calculated the maximum annual variation in temperature experienced across its elevational distribution. We used phylogenetic generalized least square models to evaluate the effect of thermal variability on range size. Our models included additional covariates that might affect range size: body size, local abundance, mean temperature and total precipitation. We also considered interactions between thermal variability and mean temperature or precipitation. To account for geometric constraints, we repeated our analyses with a standardized measure of range size, calculated by comparing observed range sizes with values obtained from a null model. Results: Our results supported the main prediction of the climate variability hypothesis. Thermal variability had a strong positive effect on the range size, with species exposed to higher thermal variability having broader elevational distributions. Body size and local abundance also had positive, yet weak effects, on elevational range size. Furthermore, there was a strong positive interaction between thermal variability and mean annual temperature. Main Conclusions: Thermal variability had an overriding importance in driving elevational range sizes of woody plants in the Central Andes. Moreover, the relationship between thermal variability and range size might be even stronger in warmer regions, underlining the potential vulnerability of tropical montane floras to the effects of global warming. Differences in stomatal density (SD) and stomatal index (SI) are associated with the conditions of the environment in which they are distributed. Mimosa species are important elements in different plant communities, yet knowledge of the ecological implications of its stomatal characteristics is scarce. For this reason, SD and SI were determined in seven Mimosa species from different environments in this study. Five individuals per species were selected, and a sample of leaflets was obtained from each. Fifteen mature leaflets per individual were then extracted and observed by optical microscopy. SD, SI, epidermal cell density (ECD), and guard cell length (GCL) values were obtained. Differences between species were analyzed through a balanced analysis of variance test, and the correspondence between the stomatal characteristics and 21 climate variables was determined by canonical correspondence analysis. The species differed in all evaluated characteristics. It should be noted that only M. affinis showed differences between the leaflet surfaces. Both DE and ECD were negatively associated with altitude and solar radiation and positively with temperature and precipitation. SI was explained by temperature and seasonality of precipitation, and GCL by temperature oscillation and seasonality of precipitation. A static batch arrangement composed of anti-leak vials coupled to gas chromatography is proposed as a complementary system for performance assessment of biogas desulfurization by adsorption. For testing, a modified commercial activated carbon produced by controlled thermal treatment in the presence of iron(III) species improved biogas desulfurization. The adsorbents showed a superior hydrogen sulfide removal compared to ordinary one. Pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and Bangham's kinetic models were used to fit experimental data. All studied samples followed pseudo-first-order model, indicating the predominance of physisorption, and Bangham's model, confirming that the micropores structure played an important role for gases diffusion and adsorbent capacity. Additionally, the materials were characterized by N2 adsorption–desorption, X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive spectroscopy. The thermal treatment associated with iron impregnation caused significant modifications in the surface of the materials, and the iron species showed two main benefits: an expressive increase in the specific area and the formation of specific adsorption sites for hydrogen sulfide removal. The results reinforce the advantages of iron-modified adsorbents in relation to their non-modified counterparts. The analytical methodology based on the confinement of multiple gases contributes to improving the understanding of the hydrogen sulfide adsorption process using pressure swing adsorption technology. Chitosan, chitosan-moringa seed powder, and chitosan-moringa seed powder-bentonite composite films were fabricated by solvent casting method. The texture and the color of the chitosan films changed in the presence of moringa seed powder and bentonite. Moringa seed powder decreased the tensile strength of the films, whereas bentonite improved the tensile strength of the films when its concentration was below 15 wt%. All the films could efficiently remove turbidity from model turbid water - prepared by dispersing kaolin in water. A marked increase in turbidity coagulation was observed when moringa seed powder was incorporated into the chitosan film. Films with 15 wt% moringa seed powder could remove 73% in 3 h, whereas chitosan film alone removed 53% in 3 h. Further enhancement of turbidity removal efficacy was observed when bentonite was incorporated into the films along with the moringa seed powder. Films with 15 wt% moringa seed powder and 10 wt% bentonite removed 83 and 96% turbidity in 3 and 12 h, respectively. Furthermore, these films could be reused several times. The films with the above composition were tested for turbidity settlement for five cycles. In the 5th cycle, the films could remove 85% turbidity without undergoing any breakage. Water quality and the management of nitrogenous compounds are of key importance within aquaculture. In this paper, automated and portable analysers for in situ analysis of nitrite and nitrate in water were deployed in freshwater and saline recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS). The analysers were based upon ion chromatography (IC) and employed a NaCl eluent with an anion exchange guard column for low backpressure anion separation, in combination with selective 235 nm ultra-violet light-emitting diode (UV-LED) based absorbance detection. The analysers were monitored and delivered real-time concentration data using a cellular internet of things (IoT) module and cloud-based dashboard. Overall performance and chromatographic repeatability were tested across various temperature profiles and 500 sequential runs within the laboratory. Deployments in freshwater and saline RAS, with concentrations ranging between 0.1–3.6 mg L−1 nitrite and 0.6–392 mg L−1 nitrate, were successful and the analytical performance was comparable to that of accredited lab-based instrumentation. Escherichia coli (E. coli) may be harmful to humans. Hence, a rapid, low cost, and easy detection method is needed, and optical biosensors are an excellent option. Here a new platform based upon silicon carbide and titanium (SiC-Ti) was used to determine enteropathogenic E. coli by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Self-assembly monolayer (SAM) approach was used to modify the platform. Antibody anti-E. coli flagella were obtained and utilized as the biological recognition element. Three concentrations of bacteria (10, 100, and 1000 CFU/mL) were determined. The detection region was from 1330 to 1480 cm−1, where characteristic bands associated with E. coli were determined. Airway smooth muscle (ASM) contraction is determined by the increase in intracellular Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) caused by its release from the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) or by extracellular Ca2+ influx. Major channels involved in Ca2+ influx in ASM cells are L-type voltage-dependent Ca2+ channels (L-VDCCs) and nonselective cation channels (NSCCs). Transient receptor potential vanilloid 4 (TRPV4) is an NSCC recently studied in ASM. Mechanical stimuli, such as contraction, can activate TRPV4. We investigated the possible activation of TRPV4 by histamine (His)- or carbachol (CCh)-induced contraction in guinea pig ASM. In single myocytes, the TRPV4 agonist (GSK101) evoked an increase in [Ca2+]i, characterized by a slow onset and a plateau phase. The TRPV4 antagonist (GSK219) decreased channel activity by 94%, whereas the Ca2+-free medium abolished the Ca2+ response induced by GSK101. Moreover, GSK101 caused Na+ influx in tracheal myocytes. GSK219 reduced the Ca2+ peak and the Ca2+ plateau triggered by His or CCh. TRPV4 blockade shifted the concentration–response curve relating to His and CCh to the right in tracheal rings and reduced the maximal contraction. Finally, the activation of TRPV4 in single myocytes increased the Ca2+ refilling of the SR. We conclude that contraction of ASM cells after stimulation with His or CCh promotes TRPV4 activation, the subsequent influx of Ca2+ and Na+, and the opening of L-VDCCs. We aimed to analyse the trends of interpersonal violence (IV) in Latin America (LA) between 1990 and 2019 for females and males at a national level. Cross-sectional descriptive study. Following the 2019 Global Burden of Disease study we report IV mortality, premature mortality, years lived with disability and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) in LA by sex. To estimate the DALYs trends, we conducted a Joinpoint regression analysis. Across all LA countries, IV burden was higher among males. Most of the IV burden was attributable to premature death, with a higher percentage in men than women. The burden of IV was most pronounced within the 15 to 39 age-groups in the majority of countries. Physical violence (PV) by firearm was the main cause of IV in LA, followed by PV by other means. Women in LA experienced at least twice as many sexual violence DALYs as men. IV in LA exhibited heterogeneous trends, with certain countries witnessing a significant decline in the IV DALYs rate, while others displayed a significant increase. Our results show the great heterogeneity of IV burden present in the region as the trends varied from one country to another. Policing and criminal justice institutions in LA have failed to reduce crime and violence. Thus, tailored preventive measures and public policies that account for the specific context and geographical areas where this phenomenon is prevalent are urgently needed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The use of the vertical centrifuge in the olive oil production process is generally assumed to be habitual and necessary for the elimination of both the vegetation water and the small olive pulp particles that are not eliminated during solid–liquid separation (horizontal centrifugation). Trials were carried out with different oil:water ratios to study the influence of this variable on both the quality parameters of the olive oils obtained and the loss of oil with the olive wastewater. The trials were carried out at the industrial mill level with oil:water ratios between 0.6 and 5.5. While no differences were observed in the quality parameters of the oils obtained, correct adjustment of the oil:water flow rates reduced the loss of phenols present in the oils by around 30%. In addition, the results show a direct relationship between the soluble effluent and the conductivity of the olive mill wastewater (alpechín) with the loss of oil in the effluent. This work proves that both oil quality and the competitiveness of the olive oil value chain can be increased with energy savings, water consumption reduction, and environmental sustainability. Many attempts have been proposed to evaluate the linkage between the oral–gut–liver axis and the mechanisms related to the diseases' establishment. One of them is the oral microbiota translocation into the bloodstream, liver, and gut, promoting a host dysbiosis and triggering the presence of some metabolites such as trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), known as a risk marker for cardiovascular disease, and especially the myocardial infarction (MI). In the present pilot study, the involvement of oral dysbiosis related to the presence of TMAO has been considered an independent component of the standard risk factors (SRs) in the development of MI, which has not been previously described in human cohorts. A positive and significant correlation of TMAO levels with Porphyromonas was identified; likewise, the increase of the genus Peptidiphaga in patients without SRs was observed. We determined that the presence of SRs does not influence the TMAO concentration in these patients. This report is the first study where the relationship between oral dysbiosis and TMAO is specified in the Mexican population. Our findings provide information on the possible contribution of the oral pathogens associated with gut dysbiosis in the development of MI, although further analysis should be performed. Lathyrane-type diterpenes have a wide range of biological activities. Among them, euphoboetirane A (1) exerts neurogenesis-promoting activity. In order to increase the structural diversity of this type of lathyrane and explore its potential use in neurodegenerative disorders, the biotransformation of 1 by Streptomyces puniceus BC-5GB.11 has been investigated. The strain BC-5GB.11, isolated from surface sediments collected from the intertidal zone of the inner Bay of Cadiz, was identified as Streptomyces puniceus, as determined by phylogenetic analysis using 16S rRNA gene sequence. Biotransformation of 1 by BC-5GB.11 afforded five products (3–7), all of which were reported here for the first time. The main biotransformation pathways involved regioselective oxidation at non-activated carbons (3–5) and isomerization of the ∆12,13 double bond (6). This text aims to analyze the main theoretical approaches in the study of organizations in Mexico, highlighting differences between Organization Theory (OT) and Organizational Studies (OS), and setting the historical background of both perspectives within the country. It focuses on three key aspects essential for understanding these approaches, rooted in the formation of a scientific community: academic production by researchers, specialized journals, and the training of new researchers. The analysis shows that the main institutions studied are public, with a gradual inclusion of social sector entities and small to medium-sized enterprises over time. The most significant study topic identified is the search for local and institutional identities, alongside the noted necessity for accredited specialized journals. While the study is exploratory and outlines important aspects that shed light on specific characteristics of the organizational field in Mexico, it emphasizes the need for ongoing efforts to develop a more comprehensive and detailed theoretical and methodological framework for the Mexican case. This research focuses about habitability, specifically the case of the Metropolitan Area of the Valley of Mexico. The dynamics within this area, which is made up by municipalities from three states, highlight the differences between Mexico City and the rest of municipalities in the conurbation, especially the disparities in equipment and access to services, among other characteristics. The main objective is to contrast some indicators that are used to measure habitability, with the perception of housing conditions and the space built. To this end, we chose the municipality of Ecatepec. We use data from the 2015 Intercensus Survey, as well as information collected through semi-structured interviews. We highlight the significance of considering not only quantitative factors to understand habitability, but also taking into account the perception of the population on this subject. Crown rot, caused by Fusarium species, is the most devastating postharvest disease in bananas. Fungicides are traditionally applied as a postharvest treatment to control crown rot in bananas. However, there is a need to research environmentally friendly compounds as postharvest treatments instead of chemical fungicides. The phenolic compounds gallic acid, protocatechuic acid, and chlorogenic acid were identified in coconut mesocarp extract. Overall, the treatments were more efficient in crown-based than fruit-based culture mediums. The mycelial development was inhibited in a range from 20 to 26% (applying coconut mesocarp extract at 5%) compared to the control. Sporulation and spore germination were significantly inhibited, with a reduction of 88% in spore production and 91% in spore germination inhibition compared to the control. In in vivo tests, the aqueous extracts were effective by limiting the percentage of infected fruit, crown rot, and fruit severity. The use of coconut mesocarp extracts can be an effective and environmentally friendly alternative to the use of fungicides for controlling Fusarium musae on bananas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective Method Results Conclusions The identification of a common set of symptoms for assessing cognitive disengagement syndrome (CDS, formerly sluggish cognitive tempo) for early childhood (ages 5–8), middle childhood (ages 9–12), and adolescence (ages 13–16) is needed to advance research on the developmental psychopathology of CDS (i.e. a common symptom set with comparable internal and external validity for each age group).Parents of a nationally representative sample of 5,525 Spanish children and adolescents (ages 5 to 16, 56.1% boys) completed measures of CDS, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder-inattention (ADHD-IN), and other measures.First, the 15 CDS symptoms showed convergent and discriminant validity relative to the ADHD-IN symptoms within each age group. Second, CDS showed stronger first-order and unique associations than ADHD-IN with anxiety, depression, somatization, daytime sleep-related impairment, and nighttime sleep disturbance, whereas ADHD-IN showed stronger first-order and unique associations than CDS with ADHD-hyperactivity/impulsivity, oppositional defiant disorder, and academic impairment. Third, CDS showed stronger first-order and unique associations than ADHD-IN with a history of having an anxiety, depression, or bipolar disorder diagnosis, whereas ADHD-IN showed stronger first-order and unique associations with having an ADHD diagnosis.The identification of a common set of CDS symptoms spanning early childhood to adolescence allows for the advancement of research on CDS, with a particular need now for longitudinal studies and examination of CDS with other functional outcomes and across other cultural contexts. The spectrum of energy and eigenstates of an hybrid cavity optomechanical system, where a cavity field mode interacts with a mechanical mode of a vibrating end mirror via radiation pressure and with a two level atom via electric dipole interaction are investigated. In the spirit of approximations developed for the quantum Rabi model beyond rotating‐wave approximation (RWA), the so‐called generalized RWA (GRWA) to diagonalize the tripartite Hamiltonian for arbitrary large couplings is implemented. Notably, the GRWA approach still allows to rewrite the hybrid Hamiltonian in a bipartite form, like a Rabi model with dressed atom‐field states (polaritons) coupled to mechanical modes through reparametrized coupling strength and Rabi frequency. A more accurate energy spectrum for a wide range of values of the atom‐photon and photon–phonon couplings, when compared to the RWA results is found. The fidelity between the numerical eigenstates and its approximated counterparts is also calculated. The degree of polariton‐phonon entanglement of the eigenstates presents a non‐monotonic behavior as the atom‐photon coupling varies, in contrast to the characteristic monotonic increase in the RWA treatment. Introduction: This study developed a simple algorithm based on clinical results described in medical literature and which allows one to simplify complex insulin regimes with IdegLira to avoid adverse events related to the complexity of some insulin treatments. Methods: We conducted a systematic review of the literature that allowed us to identify studies that evaluated the clinical result of simplifying complex insulin regimes. The authors reviewed the common factors these simpler regimes had, including the type of patients who used them. Results: We found nine clinical studies published between 2017 and 2022, eight performed in Europe and one in Latin America. The monitoring time of the studies ranged between 3 and 18 months. The size of the study populations was between 61 and 611 patients (the latter was in five countries). In all studies, HbA1c decreased by 0.6–1.7% and the weight decreased by 0.1–3.11 kg. Conclusions: On the basis of the findings of these studies, we made some recommendations for clinical practice to simplify treatment. Introduction: In East and Southern Africa, people with HIV (PWH) experience worse cancer-related outcomes and are at higher risk of developing certain cancers. Siloed care delivery pathways pose a substantial barrier to co-management of HIV and cancer care delivery. Methods: We conducted cross-sectional studies of adult cancer patients at public radiotherapy and oncology units in Malawi (Kamuzu Central Hospital), Zimbabwe (Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals), and South Africa (Charlotte Maxeke Hospital) between 2018 and 2019. We abstracted cancer- and HIV-related data from new cancer patient records and used Poisson regression with robust variance to identify patient characteristics associated with HIV documentation. Results: We included 1,648 records from Malawi (median age 46 years), 1,044 records from South Africa (median age 55 years), and 1,135 records from Zimbabwe (median age 52 years). Records from all three sites were predominately from female patients; the most common cancers were cervical (Malawi [29%] and Zimbabwe [43%]) and breast (South Africa [87%]). HIV status was documented in 22% of cancer records from Malawi, 92% from South Africa, and 86% from Zimbabwe. Patients with infection-related cancers were more likely to have HIV status documented in Malawi (adjusted prevalence ratio [aPR]: 1.92, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.56–2.38) and Zimbabwe (aPR: 1.16, 95%CI: 1.10–1.22). Patients aged ≥ 60 years were less likely to have HIV status documented (Malawi: aPR: 0.66, 95% CI: 0.50–0.87; Zimbabwe: aPR: 0.76, 95%CI: 0.72–0.81) than patients under age 40 years. Patient age and cancer type were not associated with HIV status documentation in South Africa. Conclusion: Different cancer centers have different gaps in HIV status documentation and will require tailored strategies to improve processes for ascertaining and recording HIV-related information in cancer records. Coffee is one of the most consumed beverages in the world. Coffee provides to the consumer special sensorial characteristics, can help to prevent diseases, improves physical performance and increases focus. In contrast, coffee consumption supplies a significant source of substances with carcinogenic and genotoxic potential such as furan, hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), furfural (F), and acrylamide (AA). The present review addresses the issues around the presence of such toxic substances formed in Maillard reaction (MR) during thermal treatments in food processing, from chemical and, toxicological perspectives, occurrences in coffee and other foods processed by heating. In addition, current strategies advantages and disadvantages are presented along with application of molecular imprinting technology (MIT) and poly (ionic liquid) s (PIL) as an alternative to reduce the furan, HMF, F and AA content in coffee and other foods. Aberrant expression of the tight junction protein claudin 6 (CLDN6) is a hallmark of gastric cancer progression. Its expression is regulated by the cAMP response element-binding protein (CREB). In gastric cancer induced by Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) there is no information regarding what transcription factors induce/upregulate the expression of CLDN6. We aimed to identify whether CREB and Yin Yang1 (YY1) regulate the expression of CLDN6 and the site where they bind to the promoter sequence. Bioinformatics analysis, H. pylori lipopolysaccharide (LPS), YY1 and CREB silencing, Western blot, luciferase assays, and chromatin immunoprecipitation experiments were performed using the stomach gastric adenocarcinoma cell line AGS. A gen reporter assay suggested that the initial 2000 bp contains the regulatory sequence associated with CLDN6 transcription; the luciferase assay demonstrated three different regions with transcriptional activity, but the −901 to −1421 bp region displayed the maximal transcriptional activity in response to LPS. Fragment 1279–1421 showed CREB and, surprisingly, YY1 occupancy. Sequential Chromatin Immunoprecipitation (ChIP) experiments confirmed that YY1 and CREB interact in the 1279–1421 region. Our results suggest that CLDN6 expression is regulated by the binding of YY1 and CREB in the 901–1421 enhancer, in which a non-described interaction of YY1 with CREB was established in the 1279–1421 region. Down syndrome (DS) is the most common autosomal aneuploidy and the leading cause of intellectual disability of genetic origin worldwide. It is identified as a syndrome in which the variability of its clinical manifestations and the severity of its phenotype have a multifactorial origin. Worldwide prevalence ranges between 1 per 700 live births and several factors that may be involved in the origin of DS have been proposed. Our objective was to describe updates regarding risk factors in the cytogenetic origin or cause of DS. We conducted a narrative review study in which a literature search was carried out from January to June 2022 in databases such as PubMed, EBSCO, Medigraphic, ClinicalKey, and meta-search engines such as Elsevier and Evidence Alerts. Only articles published in the last 10 years in English and Spanish were included. The search terms used were: Down syndrome, risk factors, prevention. Although DS is a very common chromosomal pathology worldwide, there is no single risk factor at the origin of meiotic or mitotic nondisjunction of chromosome 21, but rather each of the associated risk factors contributes to a greater or lesser degree to a cytogenetic predisposition in the etiology of trisomy 21. For the endemic wildlife of Madagascar, the risk of extinction increases as the island's forest cover decreases. Many of the remaining forests are isolated fragments serving as important refugia for biodiversity. In this research note, we describe the biodiversity of the Ivohiboro Humid Forest (IHF), and its conservation importance in Madagascar. Located in a region dominated by wooded savannah, the IHF represents a very rare vegetation type. We conducted six biological surveys to explore the diversity of vertebrates and vascular plants in this isolated forest. Our results show that the IHF maintains a diverse ecosystem and harbors species of conservation significance. Thirty‐four of the identified species are categorized as Threatened by the IUCN, such as the ring‐tailed lemur (Lemur catta) and Isalo Madagascar frog (Gephyromantis corvus). Furthermore, we inventoried species distant from their known IUCN‐reported geographic ranges such as a species of blue‐nosed chameleon (Calumma sp. aff. boettgeri, linotum) and the Lavasoa dwarf lemur (Cheirogaleus lavasoensis). Background: Interindividual survival and recurrence rates in cases of locoregional colon cancer following surgical resection are highly variable. The aim of the present study was to determine whether elevated pre-operative and post-operative CEA values are useful prognostic biomarkers for patients with stage I-III colon cancer who underwent surgery with curative intent. Methods: We conducted a retrospective study in patients with histologically confirmed stage I-III primary colonic adenocarcinoma who underwent radical surgical resection at Mexico's National Cancer Institute, between January 2008 and January 2020. We determined pre-operative and post-operative CEA and analyzed the association of scores with poorer survival outcomes in patients with resected colon cancer, considering overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS). Results: We included 640 patients with stage I-III colon cancer. Pre-operative CEA levels were in the normal range in 460 patients (group A) and above the reference value in the other 180. Of the latter, 134 presented normalized CEA levels after surgery, but 46 (group C) continued to show CEA levels above the reference values after surgery. Therefore, propensity score matching (PSM) was carried out to reduce the bias. Patients were adjusted at a 1:1:1 ratio with 46 in each group, to match the number in the smallest group. Median follow- up was 46.4 months (range, 4.9–147.4 months). Median DFS was significantly shorter in Group C: 55.5 months (95% CI 39.6–71.3) than in the other two groups [Group A: 77.1 months (95% CI 72.6–81.6). Group B: 75.7 months (95% CI 66.8–84.5) (p-value < 0.001)]. Overall survival was also significantly worse in group C [57.1 (95% CI 37.8–76.3) months] than in group A [82.8 (95% CI 78.6–86.9 months] and group B [87.1 (95% CI 79.6–94.5 months] (p-value = 0.002). To identify whether change in CEA levels operative and post-surgery was an independent prognostic factor for survival outcomes, a Cox proportional hazard model was applied. Giant low surface brightness (GLSB) galaxies, such as Malin 1 and UGC 1382, contain the largest stellar discs known. GLSB galaxies also often contain large masses of neutral hydrogen (H  i). However, these extreme galaxies' origin and properties remain poorly understood. Using the cosmological simulation IllustrisTNG 100, we identify and select a sample of ∼200 galaxies with extended (⁠|$R_{\rm {\rm H\,{\small I}}}\,\gt\, 50$| kpc) and well-defined H  i discs, ∼6 per cent of the total galaxies in the same stellar mass range (10.2 < log (M */M⊙) < 11.6). This GLSB sample is heterogeneous, with mixed galaxy morphologies ranging from the most disc-dominated systems to massive ellipticals. These simulated GLSB galaxies are located in massive haloes (⁠|$V_{\max }\, \gt \, 150\ \rm {km\ s^{-1}}$|⁠) and their properties, such as total H  i content, stellar disc parameters, star formation rate, and rotation curves, agree with observed GLSB galaxies. We construct a paired control sample to contrast with the GLSB galaxies. The GLSB galaxies tend to have large galaxy spin parameters (⁠|$40{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| larger) and larger ex situ stellar mass fractions than the paired control. In previous reports, it has been demonstrated that cyclometalated iron(II/III) complexes can be prepared by reacting iron(0) precursors and mercurated or brominated derivatives. However, in this report, the reaction between [Fe3(CO)12] and mercurated 6‐phenyl‐2,2′‐bipyridine or brominated 2,6‐diphenyl‐pyridine pincer derivatives led to compounds in which C(sp2)−C(sp2) bonds have been formed between two ligands. A 16‐electron iron(II) complex (1Cl) bearing a tetradentate ligand originating from the dimerization of 6‐phenyl‐2,2′‐bipyridine was isolated, while a protonated 14‐membered macrocycle with [FeBr4]− as counterion (2) was obtained from 2,6‐diphenyl‐pyridine. Studies by X‐ray diffraction crystallography, NMR, UV‐vis and cyclic voltammetry confirmed the structures. Additionally, the cytotoxicity of the new compounds toward gastric cancer cell lines was evaluated, and it was established that the presence of the iron(II) center was crucial for an elevated activity. This study demonstrates the interrelation between peer teaching and six grading criteria used in a graduate business program. Twenty (20) enrolled post-graduate students in the Advanced Statistics course were assigned to five (5) peer groups participating in the study. The quantitative graphical method was used. Specifically, the Correspondence Analysis (CA) two-way contingency table describes the association between the level of peer-teaching and its applicability to the six grading criteria. Based on the CA result, there was a clear separation among the peer groupings and the six grading criteria. Peer group D find peer teaching applicable to written content and exam. Peer group B considered peer-teaching moderately applicable to research while highly applicable in language content. For students in peer group C, moderate peer teaching is highly applicable to oral content. However, peer group A regarded peer teaching as not applicable to written skills. The correspondence analysis provided valuable insights into the relationships between peer teaching and six grading criteria. This study confirms that the level of peer teaching possesses a specific level of applicability in the six grading criteria, with the peer groupings exhibiting distinct patterns. This paper proposes the geometry-based polylinal routing method as a solution for motion planning in object sorting exercises in manufacturing processes. This algorithm is based on geometric properties that arise from the interaction among objects within the configuration space. The method proposed in this paper, during its experimental phase, successfully generated smooth routes with a processing time ranging from 62.5-125 ms on a computer equipped with an AMD Ryzen 7 2700X Eight-Core 3.70 GHz processor and 16 GB of RAM. When compared to the RRT algorithm, it exhibits a higher efficiency of 38% to 48%, resulting in a reduction in iterative processes and a shorter response time. Background: Type 2 Diabetes (T2DM) prevalence is increasing in low- and middle-income countries along with high levels of obesity which vary according to socioeconomic and contextual characteristics. We aim to estimate the prevalence of T2DM and obesity in men and women in a hard-to-reach rural area in northern Ecuador considering socio-demographic characteristics. Methods: Cross-sectional descriptive study based on a population-based survey in the Eloy Alfaro health district of Esmeraldas between October 2020 and January 2022. We collected sociodemographic information and risk factors for non-communicable diseases with an adapted version of the STEPS survey, performed oral glucose tolerance tests, biochemistry and took physical measurements. We estimated the prevalence of T2DM, obesity, and calculated Odds Ratios (OR) with confidence intervals by logistic regression in Stata v.15. Results: The overall prevalence of T2DM was 6.8% (CI95%: 4.9–8.7), markedly higher among women compared to men (10.4%, CI95% 7.3–13.4%, compared 2.0%, CI95% 0.4–3.7% respectively). The risk of having T2DM in women was 5 times higher than in men adjusting for age, ethnicity, employment, household earnings and obesity (OR: 5.03; 95%CI: 1.68–15.01). Regarding age, the risk of T2DM increased by 6% per year (adjusted OR: 1.06; 95%CI: 1.03–1.08). Obesity prevalence was 30.8% (CI95%: 27.3–34.3), in women was nearly three times higher than in men (43.2% CI95%: 38.2–48.2, compared to 14.7% prevalence, CI95%: 10.6–18.8). Indigenous women had a lower prevalence of obesity compared with the Afro-Ecuadorian women (OR: 0.05; 95%CI: 0.02–0.18) after adjusting for age, employment status, household earnings and setting. Conclusion: We found alarming differences between the prevalence of T2DM and obesity in women and men that may be explained by gender roles, exacerbated in the rural context. Background: The carbon dioxide (CO2) laser is an ablative system that evaporates, remodels, and coagulates tissues, becoming therefore a gold standard piece of equipment for the treatment of dermatological pathologies and esthetic imperfections. Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of CO2 laser treatments in different patients' skin pathologies. Methods: Atotal of 705 patientswith an age range between 18 and 70 years, with phototypes on the Fitzpatrick scale III, IV, V, and VI, were enrolled from October 2021 to May 2022, and were treated using the CO2 laser system. Results: Ninety-six patients were treated with fractional CO2 laser, used for skin rejuvenation and stretch marks. One patient presented reactivation of herpes simplex, 10 postinflammatory hyperpigmentation that resolved after 3 months with depigmenting agents, 6 with persistent erythema. A total of 13 patients with rhinophyma were treated, and no complications were observed; a total of 64 patients with wrinkles were treated. They improved in 6 months. A total of 340 patients were treated for seborrheic keratosis, papulosa nigra dermatosis, fibropapillomas, sebaceous hyperplasias, verruca vulgaris, and condylomata acuminata. One patient presented with a complication hypopigmented macule. A total of 136 patients underwent treatment for laser ablation of intradermal nevi and verrucous epidermal nevi, without complications. A total of 56 patients were treated with keloids and hypertrophic scars. One patient presented with ulceration of a keloid that resolved with the application of clostridiopeptidase A and chloramphenicol after 2 weeks. Conclusions: The use of the CO2 laser in any phototype and race, which are factors with a high incidence in Latin America, provides a safe and effective result for different dermatological pathologies. Beginning in 1905, American and European reporters, writers, and artists made pilgrimages to the hydroelectric Necaxa complex in southern Mexico. For the fossil-hungry Mexican nation, advances in hydraulic engineering had made the vision of an electrical-powered industrial future not just desirable but also feasible. North Atlantic water technicians set out to redesign rivers that would power an electrified Mexico. Necaxa was no small, remote project. Its numerous innovations commanded the world's attention, which foreign writers used to recast European and North American ambitions. Through their accounts, these "technological pilgrims" turned Necaxa into a global hydropower imaginary. With foreign engineers in the leading roles, their romanticized narratives rhetorically naturalized the redesign of rivers and the enabling power relations. The effect of modifying the support with Ni and promoting with Cu was evaluated in the competitive reaction of dibenzothiophene (DBT) hydrodesulfurization and carbazole hydrodenitrogenation using NiMo/γ-Al2 O3 and CuNiMo/γ-Al2 O3 catalysts. The catalysts were characterized using X-ray fluorescence (XRF), BET specific surface area, FT-IR and determination of acidic sites by titration with n-butylamine. XRF analysis showed a coincidence between nominal and experimental values with Mo/Cu= 6 and Cu/(Cu+Ni)= 0.65. The specific surface areas were ranged from 152 to 207 m² /g with pore diameters between 5.3 and 5.5 nm (mesopores). FT-IR exhibited characteristic bands of terminal and bridging Mo-O bonds associated with the Anderson-type structure, as well as Cu-O bond vibrations. CuNiMo/γ-Al2 O3 presented more acidic sites than NiMo/γ-Al2 O3 (7.1 vs. 6.48 µmol/m² ). Regardless of the catalyst, the catalytic evaluation showed a fit to the pseudo-first-order model of the Langmuir-Hinshelwood equation, with high conversion towards HDS instead of HDN, resulting in a carbazole HDN conversion below 4%. Migration processes are not aseptic for territories. They significantly influence the economy and local life. From a traditional perspective, co-development has raised how migration transforms and changes the life of the sending country. However, the influence of migrants in destination countries and territories is often veiled. From this context, the article poses the challenge of analyzing the wealth attributable to immigration and showing its importance and transcendence, at a time when xenophobic currents are beginning to appear in Europe and Spain. From general approaches for Spain and Andalusia, the municipalities of Lepe and Moguer in the province of Huelva were taken as a space for exploration, where the real immigrant population exceeds 22 and 37% of the total population, makes up a large part of the active population and maintains avant-garde agriculture. Birds in mixed-species flocks benefit from greater foraging efficiency and reduced predation, but also face costs related to competition and activity matching. Because this cost–benefit trade-off is context-dependent (e.g. abiotic conditions and habitat quality), the structure of flocks is expected to vary along elevational, latitudinal and disturbance gradients. Specifically, we predicted that the connectivity and cohesion of flocking networks would (i) decline towards tropical latitudes and lower elevations, where competition and activity matching costs are higher, and (ii) increase with lower forest cover and greater human disturbance. We analysed the structure of 84 flock networks across the Andes and assessed the effect of elevation, latitude, forest cover and human disturbance on network characteristics. We found that Andean flocks are overall open-membership systems (unstructured), though the extent of network structure varied across gradients. Elevation was the main predictor of structure, with more connected and less modular flocks upslope. As expected, flocks in areas with higher forest cover were less cohesive, with better defined flock subtypes. Flocks also varied across latitude and disturbance gradients as predicted, but effect sizes were small. Our findings indicate that the unstructured nature of Andean flocks might arise as a strategy to cope with harsh environmental conditions. In Lima, Peru, men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women (TW) are disproportionately affected by HIV. Patterns of sexual behavior vary by sexual partner type, which has implications for HIV prevention intervention design. We examine correlates of sex and condomless anal intercourse (CAI) with each of four types of partners among HIV-negative MSM and TW in Lima who completed monthly questionnaires about partnership types and CAI. Odds ratios were calculated using generalized estimating equations to identify correlates of being in different types of partnerships and CAI within those partnerships. Among 1,831 MSM and TW with over 14,792 study visits, CAI was most reported with main partners, followed by casual partners, one-time partners, and clients. Presence of an alcohol use disorder (AUD) significantly increased the odds of CAI with all types of partners (main: OR 1.36 (95% CI 1.17-1.57); casual: 1.49 (1.27-1.75); one-time: 1.45 (1.22-1.72); client 1.52 (1.12-2.08)); recent alcohol use increased odds of CAI with main partners. Having one main partner decreased the odds of being in casual and one-time partnerships and of CAI in all types of partnerships. Interventions targeting AUDs and individuals with multiple sexual contacts could reduce CAI and HIV risk in this population. The objective of this document is to analyze the possible relationship that exists between the development of tourism and inequality in the distribution of income in Los Cabos. Three indices were used to analyze the structure of income inequality: the Gini Index, the Generalized Entropy Index and the Atkinson Index. The data was obtained from "Encuesta Nacional de Ocupación y Empleo" for the period 2010 to 2020. The results suggest that, despite maintaining a downward trend in the indices, which implies that income distribution has improved, income inequality still prevails in Los Cabos, which is attributed to the economic concentration in the touristic activity. The analysis of the Generalized Entropy Index made it possible to determine that -indeed- there is an unequal distribution, marked by the part of the population that receives more income in contrast to the population with lower income. Background: The Gasserian ganglion is a well-known target for facial pain management, and patients with cancer present an anatomical challenge owing to tumor progression or treatment itself. Computed tomography (CT) is an alternative method for guiding these procedures. Methods: This was an observational retrospective analysis of patients with cancer-related facial pain who underwent CT-guided Gasserian ganglion interventions using local anesthetics, local anesthetics with steroids, phenol, and radiofrequency. Demographic, clinical, and procedure-related variables were collected from January 1, 2015, to December 30, 2018, at the National Cancer Institute. Data distribution was determined using the Kolmogorov– Smirnov test. A paired sample t-test (with a cut-off of P < 0.05 for statistical significance) was used for comparing outcome. Results: We observed a significant reduction in numerical rating scale and douleur neuropathique 4 scores from 7.6 ± 1.4 and 4.4 ± 1.4 to 3.2 ± 2.0 and 2.2 ± 1.4 points, respectively (P < 0.001). After the procedure, 70.8% of the patients were satisfied; 16.7% were very satisfied, and 12.5% were unsatisfied. No intra-or postoperative complications were observed. The most common neoplasms were head and neck tumors (83.3%). Conclusions: Our data suggest that CT guidance is an effective and safe option for managing cancer-related facial pain in patients with complex anatomy, resulting in a significant reduction in pain, high satisfaction rates, and no mechanical complications.
