Power-conversion efficiency is a critical factor for the wider adoption of solar-cell modules. Thin-film solar cells are cheap and easy to manufacture, but their efficiencies are low compared to crystalline-silicon solar cells and need to be improved. A thin-film solar cell with two absorber layers (instead of only one), with bandgap energy graded in both, can capture solar photons in a wider spectral range. With a 300-nm-thick CIGS~absorber layer and an 870-nm-thick CZTSSe~absorber layer, an efficiency of $34.45\%$ is predicted by a detailed optoelectronic model, provided that the grading of bandgap energy is optimal in both absorber layers., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

An optoelectronic optimization was carried out for an AlGaAs solar cell containing (i) an n-AlGaAs absorber layer with a graded bandgap and (ii) a periodically corrugated Ag backreflector combined with localized ohmic Pd-Ge-Au backcontacts. The bandgap of the absorber layer was varied either sinusoidally or linearly. An efficiency of 33.1% with the 2000-nm-thick n-AlGaAs absorber layer is predicted with linearly graded bandgap along with silver backreflector and localized ohmic backcontacts, in comparison to 27.4% efficiency obtained with homogeneous bandgap and a continuous ohmic backcontact. Sinusoidal grading of the bandgap {is predicted to enhance} the maximum efficiency to 34.5%. Thus, grading the bandgap of the absorber layer, along with a periodically corrugated Ag backreflector and localized ohmic Pd-Ge-Au backcontacts can help realize ultrathin and high-efficient AlGaAs solar cells for terrestrial applications.

A coupled optoelectronic model was implemented along with the differential evolution algorithm to assess the efficacy of grading the bandgap of the CZTSSe layer for enhancing the power conversion efficiency of thin-film CZTSSe solar cells. Both linearly and sinusoidally graded bandgaps were examined, with the molybdenum backreflector in the solar cell being either planar or periodically corrugated. Whereas an optimally graded bandgap can dramatically enhance the efficiency, the effect of periodically corrugating the backreflector is modest at best. An efficiency of 21.74% is predicted with sinusoidal grading of a 870-nm-thick CZTSSe layer, in comparison to 12.6% efficiency achieved experimentally with a 2200-nm-thick homogeneous CZTSSe layer. High electron-hole-pair generation rates in the narrow-bandgap regions and a high open-circuit voltage due to a wider bandgap close to the front and rear faces of the CZTSSe layer are responsible for the high enhancement of efficiency.

We study the convergence properties of the two-dimensional Rigorous Coupled Wave Approach (RCWA) for p-polarized monochromatic incident light. The RCWA is a semi-analytical numerical method that is widely used to solve the boundary-value problem of scattering by a grating. The approach requires the expansion of all electromagnetic field phasors and the relative permittivity as Fourier series in the spatial variable along the direction of the periodicity of the grating. In the direction perpendicular to the grating periodicity, the domain is discretized into thin slices and the actual relative permittivity is replaced by an approximation. The approximate relative permittivity is chosen so that the solution of the Maxwell equations in each slice can be computed without further approximation. Thus, there is error due to the approximate relative permittivity as well as the trucation of the Fourier series. We show that the RCWA embodies a Galerkin scheme for a perturbed problem, and then we use tools from the Finite Element Method to show that the method converges with increasing number of retained Fourier modes and finer approximations of the relative permittivity. Numerical examples illustrate our analysis, and suggest further work.

The power conversion efficiency of an ultrathin CIGS solar cell was maximized using a coupled optoelectronic model to determine the optimal bandgap grading of the nonhomogeneous CIGS layer in the thickness direction. The bandgap of the CIGS layer was either sinusoidally or linearly graded, and the solar cell was modeled to have a metallic backreflector corrugated periodically along a fixed direction in the plane. The model predicts that specially tailored bandgap grading can significantly improve the efficiency, with much smaller improvements due to the periodic corrugations. An efficiency of 27.7% with the conventional 2200-nm-thick CIGS layer is predicted with sinusoidal bandgap grading, in comparison to 22% efficiency obtained experimentally with homogeneous bandgap. Furthermore, the inclusion of sinusoidal grading increases the predicted efficiency to 22.89% with just a 600-nm-thick CIGS layer. These high efficiencies arise due to a large electron-hole-pair generation rate in the narrow-bandgap regions and the elevation of the open-circuit voltage due to a wider bandgap in the region toward the front surface of the CIGS layer. Thus, bandgap nonhomogeneity, in conjunction with periodic corrugation of the backreflector, can be effective in realizing ultrathin CIGS solar cells that can help overcome the scarcity of indium.

We study the convergence properties of the two-dimensional Rigorous Coupled Wave Approach (RCWA) for s-polarized monochromatic incident light. The RCWA is widely used to solve electromagnetic boundary-value problems where the relative permittivity varies periodically in one direction, i.e., scattering by a grating. This semi-analytical approach expands all the electromagnetic field phasors as well as the relative permittivity as Fourier series in the spatial variable along the direction of periodicity, and also replaces the relative permittivity with a stairstep approximation along the direction normal to the direction of periodicity. Thus, there is error due to Fourier truncation and also due to the approximation of grating permittivity. We prove that the RCWA is a Galerkin scheme, which allows us to employ techniques borrowed from the Finite Element Method to analyze the error. An essential tool is a Rellich identity that shows that certain continuous problems have unique solutions that depend continuously on the data with a continuity constant having explicit dependence on the relative permittivity. We prove that the RCWA converges with an increasing number of retained Fourier modes and with a finer approximation of the grating interfaces. Numerical results show that our convergence results for increasing the number of retained Fourier modes are seen in practice, while our estimates of convergence in slice thickness are pessimistic.

Time harmonic inverse scattering using accurate forward models is often computationally expensive. On the other hand, the use of computationally efficient solvers, such as the Born approximation, may fail if the targets do not satisfy the assumptions of the simplified model. In the Bayesian framework for inverse problems, one can construct a statistical model for the errors that are induced when approximate solvers are used, and hence increase the domain of applicability of the approximate model. In this paper, we investigate the error structure that is induced by the Born approximation and show that the Bayesian approximation error approach can be used to partially recover from these errors. In particular, we study the model problem of reconstruction of the index of refraction of a penetrable medium from measurements of the far field pattern of the scattered wave.

A two-dimensional model was developed to simulate the optoelectronic characteristics of indium-gallium-nitride (InGaN), thin-film, Schottky-barrier solar cells. The solar cells comprise a window, designed to reduce the reflection of incident light, Schottky-barrier and ohmic front electrodes, an n-doped InGaN wafer, and a metallic periodically corrugated back-reflector (PCBR). The ratio of indium to gallium in the wafer varies periodically throughout the thickness of the absorbing layer of the solar cell. Thus, the resulting InGaN wafer's optical and electrical properties are made to vary periodically. This material nonhomogeneity could be physically achieved by varying the fractional composition of indium and gallium during deposition. Empirical models for indium nitride and gallium nitride were combined using Vegard's law to determine the optical and electrical constitutive properties of the alloy. The nonhomogeneity of the electrical properties of the InGaN aids in the separation of the excited electron-hole pairs, while the periodicities of optical properties and the back-reflector enable the incident light to couple to multiple guided wave modes. The profile of the resulting charge-carrier-generation rate when the solar cell is illuminated by the AM1.5G spectrum was calculated using the rigorous coupled-wave approach. The steady-state drift-diffusion equations were solved using COMSOL, which employs finite-volume methods, to calculate the current density as a function of the voltage. Mid-band Shockley-Read-Hall, Auger, and radiative recombination rates were taken to be the dominant methods of recombination. The model was used to study the effects of the solar-cell geometry and the shape of the periodic material nonhomogeneity on efficiency. The solar-cell efficiency was optimized using the differential evolution algorithm.

The rigorous coupled-wave approach (RCWA) and the differential evolution algorithm (DEA) were coupled in a practicable approach to maximize absorption in optical structures with three-dimensional morphology. As a model problem, optimal values of four geometric parameters and the bandgaps of three i-layers were found for an amorphous-silicon, multi-terminal, thin-film tandem solar cell comprising three p-i-n junctions with a metallic hexagonally corrugated back-reflector. When the optical short-circuit current density was chosen as the figure of merit to be maximized, only the bandgap of the topmost i-layer was significant and the remaining six parameters played minor roles. While this configuration would absorb light very well, it would have poor electrical performance. This is because the optimization problem allows for the thicknesses and bandgaps of the semiconductor layers to change. We therefore devised another figure of merit that takes into account bandgap changes by estimating the open-circuit voltage. The resulting configuration was found to be optimal with respect to all seven variable parameters. The RCWA+DEA optimization approach is applicable to other types of photovoltaic solar cells as well as optical absorbers, with the choice of the figure of merit being vital to a successful outcome., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures

The rigorous coupled wave approach (RCWA) was implemented to investigate optical absorption in a triple-p-i-n-junction amorphous-silicon solar cell with a 2D metallic periodically corrugated backreflector (PCBR). Both total and useful absorptances were computed against the free-space wavelength $\lambda_o$ for both s- and p-polarized polarization states. The useful absorptance in each of the three p-i-n junctions was also computed for normal as well as oblique incidence. Furthermore, two canonical boundary-value problems were solved for the prediction of guided-wave modes (GWMs): surface-plasmon-polariton waves and waveguide modes. Use of the doubly periodic PCBR enhanced both useful and total absorptances in comparison to a planar backreflector. The predicted GWMs were correlated with the peaks of the total and useful absorptances. The excitation of GWMs was mostly confined to $\lambda_o < 700$ nm and enhanced absorption. As excitation of certain GWMs could be correlated with the total absorptance but not with the useful absorptance, the useful absorptance should be studied while devising light-trapping strategies., Comment: 17 pages; 8 figures
