Objectives: Pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) is frequently affected by fungal infections during the pre-and post-harvesting periods, resulting in severe losses to the farming economy. The common pre-and post-harvest pomegranate pathogens affecting the final yield and quality of the fruits are Botrytis cinerea, Alternaria alternata, Penicillium implicatum, and Aspergillus niger. This study aimed to isolate and identify the pathogens causing pomegranate rot diseases. Also, the values of Xanthium strumarium extracts as eco-friendly control agents and three Trichoderma strains as biological control agents against the pomegranate fungal pathogen were determined. Methods: The plate dilution method was used to isolate fungi populations from pomegranate plants. The pathogens fungi were identified by the morphological and molecular method by sequenced of internal transcript spacer (ITS) region. The antifungal activities of X. strumarium extracted either by both ethanol or methanol and Trichoderma were investigated. Results and conclusions: The isolated and identified pathogens were P. implicatum, A. alternata, A. niger, Fusarium oxysporum, and F. chlamydosporum. The obtained sequences of these fungi were deposited in NCBI gene bank with accession numbers OK562113–OK562125. The efficiency of X. strumarium extract against pomegranate fungal pathogens ranged from 40.32 to 69.53% for ethanol extract and from 44.40 to 70.28% for methanol extract compared to 44.43%–85.71% for the antifungal Nystatin. Moreover, the efficiency of Trichoderma was 42.22%–72.50%, 42.30%–70.21%, and 44.54%–72.50% for strains ABSA-16, TSA-17, and ABSA-18, respectively. It could be concluded that the isolated pomegranate's pathogenic fungi in Taif were P. implicatum, A. alternata, A. niger, F. oxysporum, and F. chlamydosporum. The extract of X. strumarium obtained from the Taif region and Trichoderma can successfully assist control the pomegranate's pathogenic fungi at pre-and post-harvest, and hence can be successfully included in the IPM programs.

The leather processing industry is currently facing numerous environmental pollution challenges. Dyes are known as one of the most significant causes for water pollution. Thus, the present work is designed to tackle this issue via preparation of different composite comprising both graphene oxide and ammonium ferric sulfate, donated as GO-AFS. Results obtained via FTIR, TGA, XRD and SEM tools confirmed the facile preparation of GO-AFS composite having good thermal stability and exhibited rough and porous surface with no clear edges. The adsorption efficiency of the as-prepared GO-AFS composite was successfully examined against two commercial dyes, namely anionic dye Basic Black 7 (BB7) and cationic dye Acid Black 210 (AB210) together with specific tannery dye wastewater. The findings also ascertained that the color removal for BB7 was noticed to be mostly 100% within 2 min by GO-AFS adsorbent at 10 mg (0.1 g/L), while the color removal concentration at pH~7 was up to 700 ppm. In addition, the color removal performance of AB210 was also detected at approximately 100% by 12 mg (0.12 g/L) of GO-AFS within 3 min when the dye concentration at pH~4 was up to 400 ppm. Regarding the removal of real tannery dye from wastewater, it was also observed that the efficacy of GO-AFS as adsorbent reached 100%. Within the second cycle, the adsorption potential of recycled GO-AFS was restored by nearly 100% and this percentage decreased to 95.4% in the third cycle. In view of these findings, it can be concluded that the prepared GO-AFS composite can be considered as an excellent candidate for eradication of pollutants or contamination from tannery wastewater instead of the conventional high-cost adsorbents.

ABSTRACT: Coccidiosis is a devastating worldwide disease and is considered a dreadful disease in lovebirds. Indeed, a problem has been appeared cocktail lovebirds kept in a private pet birdhouse in Sheikh Zayed City, Giza, Egypt, in the shape of blood-tinged diarrhea, birds huddled together and showing signs of inappetence, ruffled feathers, unable to fly, general weakness and emaciation associated with high mortalities. Therefore, this study aimed to diagnose and find a suitable treatment to overcome such problems. To achieve this aim, blood and droppings samples were collected from infected and healthy birds for parasitological and hematological examinations, and tissue samples were collected from freshly dead birds for postmortem and histopathological examinations. A treatment trial was adopted on 50 infected birds and 25 healthy and parasitological negative birds and groups were classified as follows: group 1) 25 infected birds treated with Diclazuril, group 2) infected birds treated with Coccicure, and group 3) 25 birds kept as control negative reference birds. The parasitological identification revealed the presence of Eimeria aratinga (E. aratinga) oocysts in the infected bird intestine. Finally, we concluded that E. aratinga is a serious protozoon parasite infesting lovebirds revealing severe clinical signs, high mortalities, histopathological changes in the intestine and alteration in blood parameters. Diclazuril is an effective drug in treating E. aratinga in cocktail lovebirds.

ABSTRACT: The poultry industry contributes significantly to bridging the nutritional gap in many countries because of its meat and eggs products rich in protein and valuable nutrients at a cost less than other animal meat sources. The natural antibiotics alternatives including probiotics, prebiotics, symbiotics, organic acids, essential oils, enzymes, immunostimulants, and phytogenic (phytobiotic) including herbs, botanicals, essential oils, and oleoresins are the most common feed additives that acquire popularity in poultry industry following the ban of antibiotic growth promoters (AGPs). They are commonly used worldwide because of their unique properties and positive impact on poultry production. They can be easily mixed with other feed ingredients, have no tissue residues, improve feed intake, feed gain, feed conversion rate, improve bird immunity, improve digestion, increase nutrients availability as well as absorbability, have antimicrobial effects, do not affect carcass characters, decrease the usage of antibiotics, acts as antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, compete for stress factors and provide healthy organic products for human consumption. Therefore, the current review focuses on a comprehensive description of different natural antibiotic growth promoters’ alternatives, the mode of their action, and their impacts on poultry production.

Background. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is often accompanied by anemia. High-flux membranes contribute to a reasonable removal of uremic toxins which cause anemia in CKD. Inadequate data have described the efficiency of high-flux dialysis in promoting erythropoietin responsiveness in CKD patients in the Middle East. This study was conducted to compare the efficiency of maintaining high-flux hemodialysis versus low-flux dialysis for ≥1 year in promoting erythropoietin responsiveness and to show the factors associated with erythropoietin hyporesponsiveness in Arab chronic hemodialysis patients. Methods. It was a retrospective cohort study that involved 110 subjects who were categorized into group 1 (50 patients receiving low-flux dialysis) and group 2 (60 patients receiving high-flux dialysis). History taking, examination, and laboratory investigations were conducted for all patients every 3 months from January 2021 to January 2022. Results. Group 2 had significantly higher weight and body mass index than group 1 but lower cholesterol and intact parathyroid hormone levels than group 1. Erythropoietin resistance index levels did not differ between the two groups upon repeated measures over a 1-year follow-up. Significant risk factors for erythropoietin hyporesponsiveness on multivariate analysis were lower weight (Odds ratio (OR): 0.966; 95% Confidence interval (CI): 0.94–0.992; p=0.011), longer hemodialysis vintage (OR: 1.172; 95% CI: 1.036–1.325; p=0.012), lower hemoglobin levels (OR: 0.531; 95% CI: 0.362–0.779; p=0.001), and higher neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (OR: 2.436; 95% CI: 1.321–4.493; p=0.004). Conclusion. High-flux dialysis was not superior to low-flux dialysis in improving erythropoietin responsiveness.

Escherichia coli (E.coli) found in retail chicken meat could be causing a wide range of infections in humans and constitute a potential risk. This study aimed to evaluate 60 E. coli isolates from retail chicken meat (n = 34) and human urinary tract infections (UTIs, n = 26) for phylogenetic diversity, presence of pathogenicity island (PAI) markers, antimicrobial susceptibility phenotypes, and antimicrobial resistance genes, and to evaluate their biofilm formation capacity. In that context, confirmed E.coli isolates were subjected to phylogrouping analysis using triplex PCR, antimicrobial susceptibility testing using the Kirby–Bauer disc diffusion method; PAI distribution was investigated by using two multiplex PCRs. Most of the chicken isolates (22/34, 64.7%) were identified as commensal E. coli (A and B1), while 12 isolates (35.3%) were classified as pathogenic virulent E. coli (B2 and D). Similarly, the commensal group dominated in human isolates. Overall, 23 PAIs were detected in the chicken isolates; among them, 39.1% (9/23) were assigned to group B1, 34.8% (8/23) to group A, 4.34% (1/23) to group B2, and 21.7% (5/23) to group D. However, 25 PAIs were identified from the human isolates. PAI IV536 was the most prevalent (55.9%, 69.2%) PAI detected in both sources. In total, 37 (61.7%) isolates of the chicken and human isolates were biofilm producers. Noticeably, 100% of E. coli isolates were resistant to penicillin and rifamycin. Markedly, all E. coli isolates displayed multiple antibiotic resistance (MAR) phenotypes, and the multiple antibiotic resistance index (MARI) among E. coli isolates ranged between 0.5 and 1. Several antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) were identified by a PCR assay; the sul2 gene was the most prevalent (38/60, 63.3%) from both sources. Interestingly, a significant positive association (r = 0.31) between biofilm production and resistance to quinolones by the qnr gene was found by the correlation analysis. These findings were suggestive of the transmission of PAI markers and antibiotic resistance genes from poultry to humans or humans to humans through the food chain. To avoid the spread of virulent and multidrug-resistant E. coli, intensive surveillance of retail chicken meat markets is required.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the Glycyrrhiza glabra effect on growth performance, blood parameters, antioxidant and lysosomal activity, histology and immunohistochemistry of liver and intestine, and the gene expression profile of broiler chickens. A total of 180 Cobb500 broiler chicks (one-week-old) were used in this study. Chicks were distributed randomly into three treatment groups; the first group received drinking water without any supplementation (control group). In contrast, birds in groups 2 and 3 received licorice supplementation in drinking water with 0.4 and 0.8 g licorice/liter, respectively. Results revealed that licorice at a 0.4 g/L of water level improved body weight, weight gain, feed intake, and FCR. Licorice also exhibits a broad range of biological activities such as hypolipidemic, hypoglycemic, hepatoprotective, immunostimulant, and antioxidant effects. The morphometric analysis of different parameters of the intestine revealed a significant increase in the intestinal villi length, width, and villi length/crypt depth in the group supplemented with licorice 0.4 gm/L compared to other groups. The number of CD3 positive in both duodenum and ileum was increased in the licorice 0.4 gm/L group compared to other groups. The expression of growth-related genes was significantly increased with licorice supplementation and modulation of the lipid metabolism genes in the liver and upregulated to the mRNA expression of both superoxide dismutase (SOD1) and Catalase (CAT). Our results revealed that licorice supplementation increased the growth performance of broiler chickens and impacted the birds’ antioxidant activity through modulation of the growth-related genes, lipid metabolic markers, and antioxidant-related pathways.

The phenolic profile of the leaves of Beta vulgaris subspecies vulgaris variety rubra was investigated by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled to electrospray ionization high resolution mass spectrometric (ESI-HRMS-MS) detection. Mass spectrometry-based molecular networking was employed to dereplicate the known compounds. Twelve known compounds, seven of which are previously undescribed as constituents in the B. vulgaris leaves were dereplicated and assigned with various levels of identification confidence. The ameliorative effects of the aqueous methanolic extract of the leaves were assessed against alloxan induced diabetic rats. Thirty multiparous lactating Holstein cows with an average live body weight of 642 ± 21 kg and an average daily milk yield of 30.46 ± 0.59 kg were used in this study. Cows with parities of 2 and 4 were used following their peak period, and were divided into three groups, with ten cows in each group. The control group was fed yellow corn grain rations (YCG), while for the 2nd and 3rd groups, 25 and 50% of YCG was replaced with dry sugar beet pulp (DSBP), denoted as DSBP25 and DSBP50, respectively. The contents of dry matter, organic matter, ether extract, nitrogen-free extract, and fiber carbohydrate in the experimental rations tended to decrease; however, crude protein, crude fiber, ash, and fiber fractions tended to increase in the DSBP25 and DSBP50 groups. Only crude fiber digestibility increased (p < 0.05) in the DSBP rations. Rumen pH value and concentration of ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) decreased, while the concentration of total volatile fatty acids (TVFAs) increased in the DSBP25 and DSBP50 groups. The concentrations of total protein and globulin in blood plasma were higher (p < 0.05) in DSBP25 and DSBP50 than in YCG. However, plasma albumin concentration, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activities were lower (p < 0.05) in DSBP50 than in YCG. Milk yield and yield of 4% fat-corrected milk (4% FCM) were higher (p < 0.05) in DSBP25 and DSBP50 than in YCG. Fat, protein, solids not fat (SNF), and total solids (TS) contents in milk increased significantly (p < 0.05) for feeding rations containing DSBP. Feed cost was reduced, but the output of milk yield increased with DSBP. In conclusion, introducing DSBP into the rations of Holstein dairy cows led to significant improvements in their productive performance.

A new preservation approach is presented in this article to prolong the lifetime of raw chicken meat and enhance its quality at 4 °C via coating with highly soluble kidney bean protein hydrolysate. The hydrolysates of the black, red, and white kidney protein (BKH, RKH, and WKH) were obtained after 30 min enzymatic hydrolysis with Alcalase (E/S ratio of 1:100, hydrolysis degree 25–29%). The different phaseolin subunits (8S) appeared in SDS-PAGE in 35–45 kD molecular weight range while vicilin appeared in the molecular weight range of 55–75 kD. The kidney bean protein hydrolysates have considerable antioxidant activity as evidenced by the DPPH-scavenging activity and β-carotine-linolenic assay, as well as antimicrobial activity evaluated by disc diffusion assay. BKH followed by RKH (800 µg/mL) significantly (p ≤ 0.05) scavenged 95, 91% of DPPH and inhibited 82–88% of linoleic oxidation. The three studied hydrolysates significantly inhibited the growth of bacteria, yeast, and fungi, where BKH was the most performing. Kidney bean protein hydrolysates could shield the chicken meat because of their amphoteric nature and many functional properties (water and oil-absorbing capacity and foaming stability). The quality of chicken meat was assessed by tracing the fluctuations in the chemical parameters (pH, met-myoglobin, lipid oxidation, and TVBN), bacterial load (total bacterial count, and psychrophilic count), color parameters and sensorial traits during cold preservation (4 °C). The hydrolysates (800 µg/g) significantly p ≤ 0.05 reduced the increment in meat pH and TVBN values, inhibited 59–70% of lipid oxidation as compared to control during 30 days of cold storage via eliminating 50% of bacterial load and maintained secured storage for 30 days. RKH and WKH significantly (p ≤ 0.05) enhanced L*, a* values, thus augmented the meat whiteness and redness, while, BKH increased b* values, declining all color parameters during meat storage. RKH and WKH (800 µg/g) (p ≤ 0.05) maintained 50–71% and 69–75% of meat color and odor, respectively, increased the meat juiciness after 30 days of cold storage. BKH, RKH and WKH can be safely incorporated into novel foods.

Catalytic and physicochemical properties of microbial phytase sources may differ, affecting phosphorus (P) release and subsequently the productive and reproductive performance of layers. The current study aimed to evaluate the impact of bacterial and fungal phytase sources on layer productivity, egg production, biochemical blood indices, and reproductive morphology. For this purpose, 360 Bovans brown hens at 42 weeks of age were randomly allocated into 4 experimental groups, each with 15 replicates of 6 hens. The first group (control) was fed a basal diet with 4.6 g/kg available P. In contrast, the second, third, and fourth groups were fed diets treated with 3.2 g/kg available P, supplemented with either 5000 FTU/kg of bacterial E. coli (QuantumTM Blue 5G), fungal Aspergillus niger (VemoZyme® F 5000 Naturally Thermostable Phytase (NTP)), or fungal Trichodermareesei (Yemzim® FZ100). Dietary supplementation of bacterial and fungal phytases did not affect the productive performance or egg quality criteria, except for increased shell weight and thickness (p < 0.05). Serum hepatic function biomarkers and lipid profiles were not altered in treated hens, while calcium and P levels were increased (p < 0.05) related to the controls. Ovary index and length, and relative weight of oviduct and its segments were not influenced. The contents of cholesterol and malondialdehyde in the yolks from treated birds were lower compared to control hens, while calcium and P content increased (p < 0.05). Conclusively, bacterial and fungal phytase sources can compensate for the reduction of available P in layers’ diets and enhance shell and yolk quality without affecting productive performance, and no differences among them were noticed.

This study evaluates low protein diets with amino acid supplement on growth, biochemical markers and muscle amino acids profile in broilers under high ambient temperature. A total of 480 one-day-old chicks were allocated into three treatments with four replicates (n = 40). Control fed optimal protein and optimal amino acids which contains 23% and 21% crude protein (CP) with 65% methionine + cysteine/ lysine (Met + Cys/Lys) and 55% threonine/lysine (Thr/Lys), LPOA (low protein and optimal amino acids) which contains 21% and 19% CP with 65% Met + Cys/Lys and 55% Thr/Lys and 3. LPHA (low protein and high amino acids) which contains 21 and 19% CP with 74% Met + Cys/Lys and 67% Thr/Lys, respectively during the summer months (The temperatures 32 ± 3 °C, and the relative humidity 72.5% ± 4). Birds fed LPOA diets significantly highest body weight, while those fed LPHA recorded significantly the lowest body weight (BW). Dressing percentages not revealed significantly affected by reducing dietary protein levels, while the blood plasma total protein, albumin, and globulin were not significant differences due to dietary low protein. Chicks fed LPHA diets recorded the highest liver content of malonaldehyde. It could be concluded that feeding the Cobb 500 broilers on low protein diets with the same amino acid levels had no adverse effect on growth, carcass markers, and liver function, however increased amino acids levels to low protein diets may led negative impacts for the broiler performance under high ambient temperature.

The present study evaluated the effect of three feeding methods (dry feed, wet feed or wet feed fermented with Bacillus licheniformis) on the growth performance, intestinal histomorphometry and gene expression of the lipid metabolism- and growth-related genes of broiler chickens. A total of 360 one-day-old Cobb-500 broiler chicks were randomly allotted into three groups containing four replicates with 30 birds each. The first group (control) was fed a dry mash basal diet. The second and third groups were fed wet feed and fermented wet feed. The final body weight and weight gain were reduced (p < 0.01) in the wet feed group, while they did not differ between the fermented wet feed and dry feed groups. Feed intake was not altered, and feeding on wet feed significantly (p < 0.01) increased the feed-to-gain ratio compared to the remaining groups. No differences between the three feeding methods in carcass characteristics, blood biochemistry and nutrient digestibility were observed except for crude protein digestibility, which was increased (p < 0.01) in the fermented wet feed group. Duodenal and ileal villi heights were elevated in birds fed fermented wet feeds, while crypt depth was not altered. The expression fold of IGF-1, GH and m-TOR genes in the pectoral muscle of birds fed wet feed was decreased (p < 0.05), while myostatin gene expression was elevated. Feeding on wet feed reduced the hepatic gene expression of PPARγ and increased that of FAS. In conclusion, wet feed negatively affected the broiler chickens’ efficiency under heat stress; however, fermenting the wet feed with Bacillus licheniformis improved feed utilization and birds’ performance compared to the dry feed group.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains have veterinary and public health importance as they are responsible for a wide range of difficult to treat infections and food poisoning. Two hundred samples (50 samples each of minced meat, beef luncheon, Karish cheese, and human samples (pus swab from open wounds)) were cultured, and MRSA strains were identified using disk diffusion tests and mecA gene-based PCR. A total of 35% (70/200) of the examined samples were confirmed as coagulase-positive S. aureus in minced meat (46%), beef luncheon (44%), Karish cheese (44%), and human samples (22%). The MRSA strains showed resistance to amoxicillin (91.4%), penicillin (97.1%), cefoxitin (85.7%), cephradine (82.9%), tetracycline (57.2%), and erythromycin (52.8%). More than half of the tested S. aureus isolates harbored the mecA gene. The sequence analysis of the mecA gene from the minced meat, Karish cheese, and human samples revealed high genetic similarities between the S. aureus isolates from these sources. In conclusion, our findings indicate a risk for the transmission of the mecA gene of S. aureus across the food chain between humans and animal food products. Further studies should focus on finding additional epidemiological aspects of the MRSA strains in food chain.

Background: Despite the beneficial effects of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) on different biomedical applications, including their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory ones, it might have cytotoxic and genotoxic impacts on the male reproductive system. Objective: The current study compares the effect of zinc oxide nanoparticles and their bulk form, at different doses, on male rats’ reproductive performance, testicular antioxidants, gene expression, and histopathology. Materials and Methods: Thirty male rats were randomly allocated equally in five groups. The control one was injected with Tween 80 (10%). The zinc oxide nanoparticle (ZnONP) groups received ZnONPs < 50 nm, specifically, 5 mg/kg (ZnONP-1) and 10 mg/kg (ZnONP-2). The bulk zinc oxide (BZnO) groups were administered 5 mg/kg (BZnO-1) and 10 mg/kg (BZnO-2), correspondingly. Rats were injected intraperitoneally with the respected materials, twice/week for eight consecutive weeks. Finally, the male rats’ sexual behavior and their pup’s performance were determined in a monogamous mating system. Rats were then anesthetized and sacrificed for semen characteristics evaluation and tissue collection for antioxidant and hormones analysis, gene expression, and histopathological examination. Results: It was shown that ZnONP-1 improved sexual behavior, semen characteristics, and pup’s performance compared to its bulk form. Similarly, the testicular antioxidants activity, glutathione (GSH), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) increased with a decrease in the malonaldehyde (MDA), interleukin 6 (IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α) levels. It also improves the reproductive hormone levels and mRNA expression of different steroidogenesis-associated genes and anti-apoptotic genes. Conclusion: It can be concluded that zinc oxide nanoparticles, administered at 5 mg/kg, had the most beneficial effect on male reproductive performance, while 10 mg/kg could have a detrimental effect.

This project aimed to increase same-day emergency care (SDEC)-suitable activity within an existing ambulatory medical unit, in line with the recommendations set out in the NHS Long Term Plan. Prior to the project, much of the unit's activity was non-urgent and focused on supporting early discharges. Scoping exercises were undertaken to better understand current activity and identify interventions to increasing same-day referrals from within the urgent and emergency care system. Quality improvement methodology was then used to implement and study a variety of interventions, including but not limited to the development of new condition-based referral pathways. Background: The current study aimed to determine the optimal tacrolimus trough levels for balancing graft survival and patient safety following kidney transplantation., Materials and Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study involving 11,868 kidney transplant recipients from five medical centers. The association between tacrolimus exposures (periodic mean trough level, coefficient of variability, time in therapeutic range) and composite allograft outcome (de novo donor specific antibody, biopsy-proven rejection, kidney dysfunction, and graft failure), as well as safety outcomes (severe infection, cardiovascular events, malignancy, and mortality) were assessed. Data were sourced from Clinical Data Warehouses and analyzed using advanced statistical methods, including Cox marginal structural models with inverse probability treatment weighting., Results: Tacrolimus levels of 5.0-7.9 ng/mL and 5.0-6.9 ng/mL during the 2-12 month and 12-72 month post-transplantation periods, respectively, were associated with reduced risks of composite allograft outcomes. During the first post-transplant year, the adjusted hazard ratios (aHR) for composite allograft outcomes were: 0.69 (95% CI 0.55-0.85, P<0.001) for 5.0-5.9 ng/mL; 0.81 (95% CI 0.67-0.98, P=0.033) for 6.0-6.9 ng/mL; and 0.73 (95% CI 0.60-0.89, P=0.002) for 7.0-7.9 ng/mL (compared to levels ≥8.0 ng/mL). For the 6-year composite outcomes, aHRs were 0.68 (95% CI 0.53-0.87, P=0.002) for 5.0-5.9 ng/mL and 0.65 (95% CI 0.50-0.85, P=0.001) for 6.0-6.9 ng/mL. Purpose To investigate the prevalence of FLCN, BAP1, SDH , and MET mutations in an oncologic cohort and determine the prevalence, clinical features, and imaging features of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) associated with these mutations. Secondarily, to determine the prevalence of encountered benign renal lesions. Materials and Methods From 25 220 patients with cancer who prospectively underwent germline analysis with a panel of more than 70 cancer-predisposing genes from 2015 to 2021, patients with FLCN, BAP1, SDH , or MET mutations were retrospectively identified. Clinical records were reviewed for patient age, sex, race/ethnicity, and renal cancer diagnosis. If RCC was present, baseline CT and MRI examinations were independently assessed by two radiologists. Summary statistics were used to summarize continuous and categorical variables by mutation. Results A total of 79 of 25 220 (0.31%) patients had a germline mutation: FLCN , 17 of 25 220 (0.07%); BAP1 , 22 of 25 220 (0.09%); SDH , 39 of 25 220 (0.15%); and MET , one of 25 220 (0.004%). Of these 79 patients, 18 (23%) were diagnosed with RCC ( FLCN , four of 17 [24%]; BAP1 , four of 22 [18%]; SDH , nine of 39 [23%]; MET , one of one [100%]). Most hereditary RCCs demonstrated ill-defined margins, central nonenhancing area (cystic or necrotic), heterogeneous enhancement, and various other CT and MR radiologic features, overlapping with the radiologic appearance of nonhereditary RCCs. The prevalence of other benign solid renal lesions (other than complex cysts) in patients was up to 11%. Conclusion FLCN, BAP1, SDH , and MET mutations were present in less than 1% of this oncologic cohort. Within the study sample size limits, imaging findings for hereditary RCC overlapped with those of nonhereditary RCC, and the prevalence of other associated benign solid renal lesions (other than complex cysts) was up to 11%. Aims: Prosthetic valve endocarditis (PVE) is the most severe form of infective endocarditis associated with a high mortality rate. Whether PVE affects biological and mechanical aortic valves to the same extent remains controversial. This study aimed to compare the incidence of re-intervention because of PVE between bioprosthetic and mechanical valves., Methods: Patients undergoing isolated surgical aortic valve replacement (AVR) or combined AVR in a single cardiac surgery centre between January 1998 and December 2019 were analysed. All patients who underwent re-intervention because of PVE were identified. The primary endpoint was the rate of explants. Freedom from re-intervention and variables associated with re-intervention were analysed using Cox regression analysis including correction for competing risk., Results: During the study period, 5,983 aortic valve prostheses were implanted, including 3,620 biological (60.5%) and 2,363 mechanical (39.5%) prostheses. The overall mean follow-up period was 7.3±5.3 years (median, 6.5; IQR 2.9-11.2 years). The rate of re-intervention for PVE in the biological group was 1.5% (n=54) compared with 1.7% (n=40) in the mechanical group (p=0.541). Cox regression analysis revealed that younger age (HR 0.960, 95% CI 0.942-0.979; p<0.001), male sex (HR 2.362, 95% CI 1.384-4.033; p=0.002), higher creatinine (HR 1.002, 95% CI 0.999-1.004; p=0.057), and biological valve prosthesis (HR 2.073, 95% CI 1.258-3.414; p=0.004) were associated with re-intervention for PVE. After correction for competing risk of death, biological valve prosthesis was significantly associated with a higher rate of re-intervention for PVE (HR 2.011, 95% CI 1.177-3.437; p=0.011)., Conclusions: According to this single-centre, observational, retrospective cohort study, AVR using biological prosthesis is associated with re-intervention for PVE compared to mechanical prosthesis. For close to 2 years, we have witnessed the impacts of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic on research at several different levels. Among the list, limited access to laboratory-based training for undergraduate students prevented this cohort from gaining exposure to the realities of a research laboratory at a critical time in training when they may have found motivation in this area as a career. COVID exposed a weakness in our training pipeline; an extreme dependency on face-to-face training that threatened to create a void in the research talent needed to replenish the scientific community every year. In the classroom, we witnessed a revolution of e-learning based approaches that could be rapidly implemented based on existing footprints. Out of necessity, our laboratory developed and implemented an e-learning model of an undergraduate peer mentor network that provides a knowledge and experience exchange platform between students with different levels of research experience. Implementation of the platform was to aid students with gaining knowledge in multiple aspects of scientific research and hands-on work in a research laboratory. The collaboration between the students of the network was aimed at not only advancing the theoretical and practical research experience, but also at developing feedback implementation and practicing "soft skills" critical for teamwork and leadership. Herein, we present an overview of the model along with survey responses of the students participating in the peer mentor network. We have found that peer delivery of practical benchwork both via scientific presentations and visualized experiments, reduced the time of training and the amount of staff assistance needed when students returned to the bench. Furthermore, this model accelerated student independence in laboratory work and increased research interest overall. In summary, the model of a peer mentor network has the potential to serve as a training platform and as a customized tool, supplementing research laboratory training at the undergraduate level beyond the pandemic., (© 2023 The Authors. Background: Systemic hypothermia with bilateral antegrade selective cerebral perfusion (ASCP) is the preferred cerebral protective strategy for type A aortic dissection surgery. The optimal ASCP flow rate remains uncertain and the target flow cannot always be reached due to pressure limitations. The aim of this study was to assess the correlation between ASCP flow and regional cerebral oxygen saturation (rSO2)., Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed on 140 patients with acute type A aortic dissection who underwent surgery with moderate hypothermic circulatory arrest and bilateral ASCP between 2015 and 2021. Pearson correlation analysis was performed between ASCP flow and rSO2., Results: The median circulatory arrest duration was 46.5 (IQR:37.0-61.0) minutes. There was no significant correlation between ASCP flow and rSO2 for both the right (r = -.02, p = .851), and the left hemisphere (r = - .04, p = .618). The rSO2 values for ten patients who received > 10 mL/kg/min flow did not differ significantly from 130 patients who received 10 mL/kg/min or less for both the left hemisphere ( p = .135), and the right hemisphere ( p = .318). The ASCP flow was 5.1 (IQR:5.0- 6.5) mL/kg/min in five patients with, and 7.2 (IQR:5.8-8.3) mL/kg/min in 135 patients without a watershed infarction ( p = .098)., Conclusions: There was no correlation between ASCP flow rate and rSO2 in patients with acute type A aortic dissection. Furthermore, ASCP flow below 10 mL/kg/min was not associated with a reduction in rSO2. Emerging reconfigurable devices are fast gaining popularity in the search for next-generation computing hardware, while ferroelectric engineering of the doping state in semiconductor materials has the potential to offer alternatives to traditional von-Neumann architecture. In this work, we combine these concepts and demonstrate the suitability of reconfigurable ferroelectric field-effect transistors (Re-FeFETs) for designing nonvolatile reconfigurable logic-in-memory circuits with multifunctional capabilities. Modulation of the energy landscape within a homojunction of a 2D tungsten diselenide (WSe 2 ) layer is achieved by independently controlling two split-gate electrodes made of a ferroelectric 2D copper indium thiophosphate (CuInP 2 S 6 ) layer. Controlling the state encoded in the program gate enables switching between p, n, and ambipolar FeFET operating modes. The transistors exhibit on-off ratios exceeding 10 6 and hysteresis windows of up to 10 V width. The homojunction can change from Ohmic-like to diode behavior with a large rectification ratio of 10 4 . When programmed in the diode mode, the large built-in p-n junction electric field enables efficient separation of photogenerated carriers, making the device attractive for energy-harvesting applications. The implementation of the Re-FeFET for reconfigurable logic functions shows how a circuit can be reconfigured to emulate either polymorphic ferroelectric NAND/AND logic-in-memory or electronic XNOR logic with a long retention time exceeding 10 4 s. We also illustrate how a circuit design made of just two Re-FeFETs exhibits high logic expressivity with reconfigurability at runtime to implement several key nonvolatile 2-input logic functions. Moreover, the Re-FeFET circuit demonstrates high compactness, with an up to 80% reduction in transistor count compared to standard CMOS design. The 2D van de Waals Re-FeFET devices therefore exhibit promising potential for both More-than-Moore and beyond-Moore future of electronics, in particular for an energy-efficient implementation of in-memory computing and machine learning hardware, due to their multifunctionality and design compactness.
