This paper offers a Nietzschean theory of emotion as expressed by following thesis: paradigmatic emotional experiences exhibit a distinctive kind of affective intentionality, specified in terms of felt valenced attitudes towards the (apparent) evaluative properties of their objects. Emotional experiences, on this Nietzschean view, are therefore fundamentally feelings towards value. This interpretation explains how Nietzschean affects can have evaluative intentional content without being constituted by cognitive states, as these feelings towards value are neither reducible to, nor to be thought along the lines of, judgements, perceptions, or other mental states. Paleo-proxy reconstructions reveal a moistening of the American Southwest during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM; 21 ka). However, the primary mechanisms driving the moistening trend are still debated, with relatively few studies focused on hypotheses related to synoptic changes in precipitation. Analysis of the Paleoclimate Intercomparison Model Project (PMIP3) simulations shows enhancement of precipitation in the southwest and south-central United States during the winter and summer. Here, we suggest that summertime eastward phase shifting of stationary waves at the LGMenhanced precipitation in the south-central United States and dried the southeastern United States. Mechanism denial experiments performed with version 3 of the Hadley Centre Coupled Model (HadCM3) indicate that the thermodynamic effect of the Laurentide Ice Sheet forced eastward phase shifting of stationary waves. By comparing a synthesis of LGM proxies to the PMIP3 ensemble, we find models that compare more favorably to the reconstructions simulate a weaker Laurentide ice thermodynamic effect, smaller eastward phase shifting of stationary waves, and weaker jet stream anomalies. We investigate how climate, clouds, and convection change as the amount of water vapor in the atmosphere is varied by altering the saturation vapor pressure (SVP) by a constant in a one-dimensional climate model. We identify four effects of altering SVP on clouds in an Earthlike climate with distinct layers of low and high clouds. First, the anvils of high clouds get higher as SVP is increased (and vice versa) because they are bound by radiative constraints to occur at a lower temperature. The vapor pressure path above the cold anvils does not change in Earthlike climates. Second, low clouds get lower as SVP increases (and vice versa) because they are coupled to a convective boundary layer (CBL) that shallows primarily from an increase in the tropospheric static stability. The third and fourth effects follow from the first two, namely, that single-layer cloud states exist both in vapor-poor states with a merged cloud deck and vapor-rich states with an elevated cloud deck. We identify two cloud instability parameters that determine the transitions between singleand double-layer cloud regimes. Qualitatively, sufficiently vapor-poor states have a deep, diffusive layer that overlaps with a weaker convective layer (topping out at the tropopause) that cannot maintain low relative humidity in the midtroposphere through the drying of descending air, thus causing the cloud layers to merge. Humanitarian surgery is essential to surgical care in limited resource settings. The difficulties associated with resource constraints necessitate special training for civilian surgeons to provide care in these situations. Specific training or curricula for humanitarian surgeons are not well described in the literature. This scoping review summarizes the existing literature and identifies areas for potential improvement. A review of articles describing established courses for civilian surgeons interested in humanitarian surgery, as well as those describing training of civilian surgeons in conflict zones, was performed. A total of 4808 abstracts were screened by two independent reviewers, and 257 abstracts were selected for full-text review. Articles describing prehospital care and military experience were excluded from the full-text review. Of the eight relevant full texts, 10 established courses for civilian surgeons were identified. Cadaver-based teaching combined with didactics were the most common course themes. Courses provided technical education focused on the management of trauma and burns as well as emergencies in orthopedics, neurosurgery, obstetrics, and gynecology. Other courses were in specialty surgery, mainly orthopedics. Two fellowship programs were identified, and these provide a different model for training humanitarian surgeons. Humanitarian surgery is often practiced in austere environments, and civilian surgeons must be adequately trained to first do no harm. Current programs include cadaver-based courses focused on enhancing trauma surgery and surgical subspecialty skills, with adjunctive didactics covering resource allocation in austere environments. This paper first demonstrates that recognition of the diversity of ways that emotional responses modulate ongoing attention generates what I call the puzzle of emotional attention, which turns on the fact that distinct emotions (e.g., fear, happiness, disgust, admiration etc.) have different attentional profiles. The puzzle concerns why this is the case, such that a solution consists in explaining why distinct emotions have the distinct attentional profiles they do. It then provides an account of the functional roles of different emotions, as tied to their evaluative themes, which explains and further elucidates the distinctive attentional profiles of different emotions, so solving the puzzle of emotional attention. Following that, it outlines how such attentional profiles are reflected in the character of emotional experience and its attentional phenomenology. Simple Summary: Drones offer the potential for monitoring sharks at beaches to improve public safety. It is necessary to investigate their effectiveness at detecting sharks in conditions specific to Southeast Queensland, because they have not previously been used in this capacity in this region. The Queensland SharkSmart drone trial ran for 12 months at five beaches, in 2020–2021. The trial ran 3369 flights and sighted 174 sharks (including 48 large sharks over 2 m in length). Sharks were sighted on 3% of flights on average, with North Stradbroke Island having the highest shark sighting rate. We found that location, the sighting of other marine life, season and time of day all had an important impact on the likelihood of sighting a shark from the drones. Overall, we demonstrated that drones could operate across a range of weather conditions and detect sharks effectively. Additionally, the drones provided extra safety benefits because they were used to identify swimmers caught in rip currents and locate missing persons. This research highlights the broad value of drones as a public safety tool at beaches, and the results of this study will help refine the operation of drones to further improve their effectiveness in the future. Drones enable the monitoring for sharks in real-time, enhancing the safety of ocean users with minimal impact on marine life. Yet, the effectiveness of drones for detecting sharks (especially potentially dangerous sharks; i.e., white shark, tiger shark, bull shark) has not yet been tested at Queensland beaches. To determine effectiveness, it is necessary to understand how environmental and operational factors affect the ability of drones to detect sharks. To assess this, we utilised data from the Queensland SharkSmart drone trial, which operated at five southeast Queensland beaches for 12 months in 2020–2021. The trial conducted 3369 flights, covering 1348 km and sighting 174 sharks (48 of which were >2 m in length). Of these, eight bull sharks and one white shark were detected, leading to four beach evacuations. The shark sighting rate was 3% when averaged across all beaches, with North Stradbroke Island (NSI) having the highest sighting rate (17.9%) and Coolum North the lowest (0%). Drone pilots were able to differentiate between key shark species, including white, bull and whaler sharks, and estimate total length of the sharks. Statistical analysis indicated that location, the sighting of other fauna, season and flight number (proxy for time of day) influenced the probability of sighting sharks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Porous media characterized by a hierarchy of length scales are ubiquitous in industry and nature, and include carbonate rocks, cements, heterogeneous catalysts, and biological cells. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is a popular tool for studying liquid-saturated porous materials, where the spin relaxation rate is generally considered proportional to pore size. However, in porous granular media, the relaxation rate is modified by diffusion between the intraparticle and interparticle pores. The observed relaxation rates do not reflect the pore size under such conditions. Deconvolving the various contributions of surface relaxation, geometry, and diffusion is nontrivial, and forward models are a powerful technique for elucidating the underlying pore structure. Various forward models have been proposed previously, including analytic solutions and random walk simulations. Here, a finite element method is adopted to simulate the diffusion of nuclear magnetization in a coupled pore geometry. We validate our model against existing solutions and use the simulations to determine the surface relaxivity of powdered silica by matching experimental results. The finite element approach is more versatile than other modeling methods, allowing direct visualization of the diffusing magnetization and being trivially extensible to multidimensional NMR exchange experiments. Strong or Pure Intentionalism is the view that the phenomenal character of a conscious experience is exhaustively determined by its intentional content. Contrastingly, impure intentionalism holds that there are also non content-based aspects or features which contribute to phenomenal character. Conscious attention is one such feature: arguably its contribution to the phenomenal character of a given conscious experience are not exhaustively captured in terms of what that experience represents, that is in terms of properties of its intentional object. This paper attempts to get clearer on the phenomenal contribution of conscious attention. In doing so it considers and sets aside two prominent impure intentionalist accounts, namely the Phenomenal Structure view of Sebastien Watzl, and the Demonstrative Awareness view of Wayne Wu. As an alternative I outline a Modification view, which draws on ideas in Husserlian phenomenology. On this view, we should think of the phenomenal contribution of conscious attention in terms of attentive modifications of what I call a ‘pre-attentive phenomenal field’. Simple Summary: All life is derived from a single common ancestor, whose descendants coevolved with the planet, shaping the structure of biodiversity and the physical processes that operate on Earth. This complex history cannot be inferred solely by studying the genomes of living organisms, nor through analysis of the fossil remains of their extinct relatives. Only a unified approach integrating living and extinct species and drawing from both genomic and anatomical evidence can achieve this aim. In this review, we highlight recent advances, challenges, and opportunities in this endeavour. These include the development of models for analysis of anatomical data; methods for combined analysis of fossil and living species, as well as anatomical and genomic data; and the combined estimation of evolutionary relationships, geographic range, and evolutionary rates. However, the application of such methods is limited by a shortage of expertise in taxonomy and comparative anatomy, which are skills required for the compilation of anatomical datasets. Whereas there is a common concern for the incompleteness of the fossil record, knowledge with respect to the comparative anatomy of living species is equally incomplete. We anticipate that the increased demand for an integrative phylogenetic approach to reconstruct the tree of life and evolutionary patterns and processes will encourage researchers to overcome these challenges with the aim of elucidating the complexities behind organismal evolution across broad taxonomic and time scales. The modern era of analytical and quantitative palaeobiology has only just begun, integrating methods such as morphological and molecular phylogenetics and divergence time estimation, as well as phenotypic and molecular rates of evolution. Calibrating the tree of life to geological time is at the nexus of many disparate disciplines, from palaeontology to molecular systematics and from geochronology to comparative genomics. Creating an evolutionary time scale of the major events that shaped biodiversity is key to all of these fields and draws from each of them. Different methodological approaches and data employed in various disciplines have traditionally made collaborative research efforts difficult among these disciplines. However, the development of new methods is bridging the historical gap between fields, providing a holistic perspective on organismal evolutionary history, integrating all of the available evidence from living and fossil species. Because phylogenies with only extant taxa do not contain enough information to either calibrate the tree of life or fully infer macroevolutionary dynamics, phylogenies should preferably include both extant and extinct taxa, which can only be achieved through the inclusion of phenotypic data. This integrative phylogenetic approach provides ample and novel opportunities for evolutionary biologists to benefit from palaeontological data to help establish an evolutionary time scale and to test core macroevolutionary hypotheses about the drivers of biological diversification across various dimensions of organisms. A simple graphical device, the simplex plot of quartet concordance factors, is introduced to aid in the exploration of a collection of gene trees on a common set of taxa. A single plot summarizes all gene tree discord and allows for visual comparison to the expected discord from the multispecies coalescent model (MSC) of incomplete lineage sorting on a species tree. A formal statistical procedure is described that can quantify the deviation from expectation for each subset of four taxa, suggesting when the data are not in accord with the MSC, and thus that either gene tree inference error is substantial or a more complex model such as that on a network may be required. If the collection of gene trees is in accord with the MSC, the plots reveal when substantial incomplete lineage sorting is present. Solid organ transplant recipients (SOTRs) have reduced immunogenicity to SARS-CoV-2 vaccines and are at increased risk of severe COVID-19 when compared to the general population.[1] Previously, a fourth dose (D4) of SARS-CoV-2 vaccine has shown improved antibody responses in SOTRs, but given the decreasing titers seen by 6 months post-dose 2 and 3, immune responses achieved after D4 could decrease in a similar fashion.[[2]] This study assesses the durability and kinetics of vaccine-induced antibody responses in SOTRs post-D4 and evaluates these responses in the context of the Omicron variant, which requires higher levels of antibody to neutralize. In this study of antibody responses after a fourth dose of SARS-CoV-2 vaccine in SOTRs with 6 months of follow up, 61% demonstrated antibody titers associated in prior studies with potential SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant neutralization at 3 months. 3 c 5/18 SOTRs with low titers and 8/39 SOTRs with high titers were unable to provide titers at 3-months post-D4. Recent work on pain focuses on the question "what makes pains unpleasant." Second-order desire views claim that the unpleasantness of pain consists in a second-order intrinsic desire that the pain experience itself cease or stop. This paper considers a significant objection to Second-order desire views by considering the case of the masochist. It is argued that various ways in which the Second-order desire view might try to account for the case of the masochist encounter problems. The conclusion is that until there is a convincing explanation of how Second-order desire views can handle masochistic psychology, theorists should look elsewhere for an account of pains unpleasantness. Heterologous vaccination has been explored in small populations of solid organ transplant recipients (SOTRs),1-4 yet 38% of participants had persistently suboptimal response indicating potential role for further vaccine doses.1 The US CDC currently recommends immunocompromised adults who received an Ad26.COV2.S prime to receive one additional dose of SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccine, either BNT162b2 or mRNA-1273, followed by two mRNA vaccine boosters, although the efficacy of this strategy in immunocompromised persons is not known. A global Hovmöller diagram of column water vapor (CWV) at 30°N from daily ERA-Interim data shows seasonally migrating North Pacific/Atlantic quasi-stationary atmospheric rivers (QSARs) located in the eastern Pacific/Atlantic in winter and propagate to the western Pacific/Atlantic in summer. Simplified general circulation model (GCM) experiments produce QSAR-like features if the boundary conditions include 1) the sea surface temperature contrast from the tropical warm pool–cold tongue and 2) topographic contrast similar to the Tibetan Plateau. Simulated QSARs form downstream of topographic contrast during winter and coincide with it in summer. Two models of baroclinic instability demonstrate that QSARs coincide with the location where the most unstable mode phase speed equals that of the upper-level zonal winds. A consistent interpretation is that the waves become quasi stationary at this location and break. The location of quasi stationarity migrates from the eastern Pacific/Atlantic in the winter, when upper-level winds are strong and extended over the basin, to the western Pacific/Atlantic when winds are weak and contracted. Low-level wind convergence and moist static energy coincide with QSARs, and since the former two are essential ingredients to monsoon formation, this implies an important role for QSARs in monsoon onset. This paper provides an assessment of the bodily-attitudinal theory of emotions, according to which emotions are felt bodily attitudes of action readiness. After providing a reconstruction of the view and clarifying its central commitments two objections are considered (absence of bodily phenomenology and what kind of bodily awareness). An alternative object side interpretation of felt action readiness is then provided, which undermines the motivation for the bodily-attitudinal theory and creates problems for its claims concerning the content of emotional experience. The conclusion is that while the bodily-attitudinal theory marks out a distinctive proposal concerning the question of what emotions are, there remain significant issues which need addressing if it is to be a plausible competitor to existing theories of emotion. Weak-temperature-gradient influences from the tropics and quasigeostrophic influences from the extratropics plausibly constrain the subtropical-mean static stability in terrestrial atmospheres. Because mean descent acting on this static stability is a leading-order term in the thermodynamic balance, a state-invariant static stability would impose constraints on the Hadley cells, which this paper explores in simulations of varying planetary rotation rate. If downdraftaveraged effective heating (the sum of diabatic heating and eddy heat flux convergence) too is invariant, so must be vertical velocity--an ''omega governor.'' In that case, the Hadley circulation overturning strength and downdraft width must scale identically--the cell can strengthen only by widening or weaken only by narrowing. Semiempirical scalings demonstrate that subtropical eddy heat flux convergence weakens with rotation rate (scales positively) while diabatic heating strengthens (scales negatively), compensating one another if they are of similar magnitude. Simulations in two idealized, dry GCMs with a wide range of planetary rotation rates exhibit nearly unchanging downdraft-averaged static stability, effective heating, and vertical velocity, as well as nearly identical scalings of the Hadley cell downdraft width and strength. In one, eddy stresses set this scaling directly (the Rossby number remains small); in the other, eddy stress and bulk Rossby number changes compensate to yield the same,~;Ω-1/3 scaling. The consistency of this power law for cell width and strength variations may indicate a common driver, and we speculate that Ekman pumping could be the mechanism responsible for this behavior. Diabatic heating in an idealized aquaplanet GCM is an order of magnitude larger than in dry GCMs and reanalyses, and while the subtropical static stability is insensitive to rotation rate, the effective heating and vertical velocity are not. Superrotation is a dynamical regime where the atmosphere circulates around the planet in the direction of planetary rotation with excess angular momentum in the equatorial region. Superrotation is known to exist in the atmospheres of Venus, Titan, Jupiter, and Saturn in the solar system. Some of the exoplanets also exhibit superrotation. Our understanding of superrotation in a framework of circulation regimes of the atmospheres of terrestrial planets is in progress thanks to the development of numerical models; a global instability involving planetary-scale waves seems to play a key role, and the dynamical state depends on the Rossby number, a measure of the relative importance of the inertial and Coriolis forces, and the thermal inertia of the atmosphere. Recent general circulation models of Venus's and Titan's atmospheres demonstrated the importance of horizontal waves in the angular momentum transport in these atmospheres and also an additional contribution of thermal tides in Venus's atmosphere. The atmospheres of Jupiter and Saturn also exhibit strong superrotation. Recent gravity data suggests that these superrotational flows extend deep into the planet, yet currently no single mechanism has been identified as driving this superrotation. Moreover, atmospheric circulation models of tidally locked, strongly irradiated exoplanets have long predicted the existence of equatorial superrotation in their atmospheres, which has been attributed to the result of the strong day-night thermal forcing. While it is widely recognized that accreditation enables an organization to improve its performance and sustain a culture of quality, changing healthcare practices to align with evidence-informed guidelines (clinical and administrative) is a complex process that takes time. The true value of accreditation lies in its contribution to healthcare safety and quality as a means to prompt and support 'knowledge to action', a key value of accreditation that 'has yet to be articulated'. Using the 'knowledge to action' cycle, a planned action framework, we illustrate that accreditation is a knowledge translation (KT) or implementation intervention that seeks to improve and increase the uptake of evidence in healthcare organizations. The accreditation components, including the quality framework, standards, self-assessment process and on-site survey visit, ultimately serve to improve quality, decreasing variation in practice and strengthening a culture of quality. With a unique perspective and alignment obtained through the implementation lens, we examine the accreditation process and components relative to the 'knowledge to action cycle' with implications for enhancing the value of accreditation beyond current appreciation to both accreditation bodies worldwide and those organizations that participate in accreditation programs. Until organizations and accreditation bodies embrace the accreditation process as a knowledge to action intervention to bring about meaningful and sustained change, the full benefits of the process will not be optimized nor achieved. According to some philosophers, when introspectively attending to experience, we seem to see right through it to the (apparent) objects outside, including their properties. This is called the transparency of experience. This paper examines whether, and in what sense, emotions are transparent. It argues that emotional experiences are opaque in a distinctive way: introspective attention to them does not principally reveal non-intentional somatic qualia but rather felt valenced intentional attitudes. Sensors, including accelerometer-based and electronic adherence monitoring devices, have transformed health data collection. Sensors allow for unobtrusive, real-time sampling of health behaviors that relate to psychological health, including sleep, physical activity, and medicationtaking. These technical strengths have captured scholarly attention, with far less discussion about the level of human touch involved in implementing sensors. Researchers face several subjective decision points when collecting health data via sensors, with these decisions posing ethical concerns for users and the public at large. Using examples from pediatric sleep, physical activity, and medication adherence research, we pose critical ethical questions, practical dilemmas, and guidance for implementing health-based sensors. We focus on youth given that they are often deemed the ideal population for digital health approaches but have unique technology-related vulnerabilities and preferences. Ethical considerations are organized according to Belmont principles of respect for persons (e.g., when sensor-based data are valued above the subjective lived experiences of youth and their families), beneficence (e.g., with sensor data management and sharing), and justice (e.g., with sensor access and acceptability among minoritized pediatric populations). Recommendations include the need to increase transparency about the extent of subjective decision making with sensor data management. Without greater attention to the human factors involved in sensor research, ethical risks could outweigh the scientific promise of sensors, thereby negating their potential role in improving child health and care. The effects of hepatitis C virus (HCV), such as morbidity and mortality associated with cirrhosis and liver cancer, is a major public health issue in Australia. Highly effective treatment has recently been made available to all Australians living with HCV. A decision-analytic model was developed to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of the hepatology partnership, compared to usual care. A Markov model was chosen, as it is state-based and able to include recursive events, which accurately reflects the natural history of the chronic and repetitive nature of HCV. Cost-effectiveness of the new model of care is indicated by the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER), where the mean change to costs associated with the new model of care is divided by the mean change in quality adjusted life-years (QALYs). Ten thousand iterations of the model were run, with the majority (73%) of ICERs representing cost-savings. In comparison to usual care, the intervention improves health outcomes (22.38 QALYs gained) and reduces costs by $42,122 per patient. When compared to usual care, a partnership approach to management of HCV is cost-effective and good value for money, even when key model parameters are changed in scenario analyses. Reduction in costs is driven by improved efficiency of the new model of care, where more patients are treated in a timely manner, away from the expensive tertiary setting. From an economic perspective, a reduction in hospital-based care is a positive outcome and represents a good investment for decision-makers who wish to maximise health gain per dollar spent. This article clarifies the nature of meta-emotions, and it surveys the prospects of applying a version of the perceptualist model of emotions to them. It first considers central aspects of their intentionality and phenomenal character. It then applies the perceptualist model to meta-emotions, addressing issues of evaluative content and the normative dimension of meta-emotional experience. Finally, in considering challenges and objections, it assesses the perceptualist model, concluding that its application to meta-emotions is an attractive extension of the theory, insofar as it captures some distinctive features of meta-emotions—specifically their normative dimension—while locating them within the domain of occurrent affective experiences. Using a global space‐time diagram of column water vapor (CWV) at 30° N latitude from daily reanalysis data, we find two quasi‐stationary parts of atmospheric rivers (QSARs) that feature locally enhanced CWV and evolve from the Eastern Pacific/Atlantic basins in the winter to the Western Pacific/Atlantic in the summer. East Asian Summer Monsoon onset coincides with the time CWV in the Pacific QSAR first exceeds 40 mm, which also typically occurs just before it makes landfall. QSARs exist in 39‐year (1979–2017) daily climatological CWV, demonstrating the seasonal cycles of these features are quasi‐stationary and potentially useful for monsoon onset prediction. East Asian Summer Monsoon onset is particularly predictable following El Niño‐Southern Oscillation, consistently occurring 25–40 days after the QSAR crosses the dateline. Much contemporary philosophy of emotion has been in broad agreement about the claim that emotional experiences have evaluative content. This paper assesses a relatively neglected alternative, which I call the content-priority view, according to which emotions are responses to a form of pre-emotional value awareness, as what we are aware of in having certain non-emotional evaluative states which are temporally prior to emotion. I argue that the central motivations of the view require a personal level conscious state of pre-emotional value awareness. However, consideration of extant suggestions for the relevant type of evaluative state shows them all to be problematic. As such, I conclude that at present we do not have a persuasive formulation of the content-priority view, and that to get one defenders of the view need to specify which version they are committed to and defend it against the criticisms raised. This paper assesses whether Evaluativism, as a view about the nature of unpleasant pains, can meet a specific normative condition. The normative condition says whatever candidate state is offered as an analysis of unpleasant pain should be intrinsically phenomenally bad for its subject to be in. I first articulate a method reflecting this condition, called the normative contrast method, and then frame Evaluativism in detail. The view is then tested through this method. I show that Evaluativism can explain why cases of evaluative thought, with the same contents as unpleasant pains, are not intrinsically phenomenally bad for their subjects to be in by appeal to intentional modes. However, I argue the appeal to perceptuality, which is central to this response is problematic, and therefore it remains unclear whether Evaluativism, as standardly articulated, can meet the normative condition on unpleasant pains. Typical emotions share important features with paradigmatic intentional states and therefore might admit of distinctions made in theory of intentionality. One such distinction is between attitude and content, where we can specify the content of an intentional state separately from its attitude, and therefore, the same content can be taken up by different intentional attitudes. According to some philosophers, emotions do not admit of this distinction, although there has been no sustained argument for this claim. In this article, I argue that the way values figure in emotional experience qualifies the content of emotional experience such that the attitude‐content distinction cannot be applied. Abstract We present a nonlinear inversion method for generating sparse solutions to the Fredholm Integral equation describing two-dimensional distributions of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxation times or diffusion coefficients. Our greedy variational method approximates the distribution of exponential rate constants using a sum of Dirac delta functions, which constitute our dictionary elements. The greedy nature of the method promotes sparsity in the representation by iteratively increasing the number of terms. The variational component estimates the parameters of the Dirac delta functions from a continuum at each iteration by reducing the least squares misfit to the data. Unlike sparsity promoting linearized inversion methods, where the dictionary is fixed and can exponentially grow in the case of multiple variables or when searching for higher resolution, the greedy component of our method aims to keep the dictionary small while the variational component keeps the dictionary dynamic. We demonstrate our method with synthetic data and experimental measurements of T 1 - T 2 correlations of liquid-saturated porous rocks. Graphical abstract Abstract Oil-based drilling fluids are complex emulsio-dispersions used in the construction of subsurface wellbores. Design and control of the rheological properties are crucial for successful drilling operations because the fluid performs several critical functions, such as hole cleaning (particle transport) and ensuring wellbore stability. One of the physical characteristics of the fluid that relates to rheology is the size of the water-in-oil emulsion droplets. Here we demonstrate the use of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) pulsed field gradient (PFG) diffusion measurements to determine droplet size distributions in oil-based drilling fluid analogues and a commercial formulation. NMR PFG allows these optically opaque samples to be measured without dilution, and the measurement is sensitive only to the liquid components. Although the NMR technique is established, the application to drilling fluids is novel. Through simulation and experiment, the suitability of a low-field benchtop NMR instrument (commonly used for rock core analysis in the petroleum industry) for measuring droplet size distributions in these fluids is explored. Despite limitations on the available gradient strength and the bulk diffusion coefficient of the brine, droplet radii in the range a = 1 μm to 50 μm are measured. This article offers an account of moods as distinctive kinds of personal level affective–evaluative states, which are both intentional and rationally intelligible in specific ways. The account contrasts with those who claim moods are non‐intentional, and so also arational. Section 2 provides a conception of intentionality and distinguishes moods, as occurrent experiential states, from other states in the affective domain. Section 3 argues moods target the subject's total environment presented in a specific evaluative light through felt valenced attitudes (the Mood‐Intentionality thesis). Section 4 argues some moods are experienced as rationally intelligible responses, and so epistemically appropriate, to the way "the world" presents itself (the Mood‐Intelligibility thesis). Abstract Determination of petrophysical parameters from surface measurements of drill cuttings, rather than well logs, has long been a subject of interest in the petroleum industry. Analysis of cuttings is presently included in mud logging workflows, although the methods employed tend to be labor-intensive and inefficient with an emphasis on qualitative lithological and mineralogical descriptors. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) has the potential to deliver rapid formation evaluation at the rig site for near-real-time completion decisions. Despite numerous efforts to demonstrate NMR cuttings analysis, dating back to the 1980s, the technique has yet to achieve commercial success. We suggest this failure is due not to the physics of the measurement, which is understood, but rather to inadequate sample preparation. By centrifuging brine-saturated cuttings from conventional formations under a per-fluorinated oil, and using multinuclear NMR to measure liquid volumes, we obtain accurate porosity and permeability values independent of other measurements. Our robust workflow removes the inconsistencies associated with manual sample preparation. We present two case studies and the important requirements for handling actual drill cuttings. Time-calibrated phylogenies of living species have been widely used to study the tempo and mode of species diversification. However, it is increasingly clear that inferences about species diversification—extinction rates in particular—can be unreliable in the absence of paleontological data. We introduce a general framework based on the fossilized birth–death process for studying speciation–extinction dynamics on phylogenies of extant and extinct species. The model assumes that phylogenies can be modeled as a mixture of distinct evolutionary rate regimes and that a hierarchical Poisson process governs the number of such rate regimes across a tree. We implemented the model in BAMM, a computational framework that uses reversible jump Markov chain Monte Carlo to simulate a posterior distribution of macroevolutionary rate regimes conditional on the branching times and topology of a phylogeny. The implementation, we describe can be applied to paleontological phylogenies, neontological phylogenies, and to phylogenies that include both extant and extinct taxa. We evaluate performance of the model on data sets simulated under a range of diversification scenarios. We find that speciation rates are reliably inferred in the absence of paleontological data. However, the inclusion of fossil observations substantially increases the accuracy of extinction rate estimates. We demonstrate that inferences are relatively robust to at least some violations of model assumptions, including heterogeneity in preservation rates and misspecification of the number of occurrences in paleontological data sets. The power of judicial review is all too often regarded as something akin to an executive veto. When a court declares a statute unconstitutional or enjoins its enforcement, the disapproved law is described as having been "struck down" or rendered "void"--as if the judiciary holds a veto-like power to cancel or revoke a duly enacted statute. And the political branches carry on as though the court's decision has erased the statute from the law books. But the federal judiciary has no authority to alter or annul a statute. The power of judicial review is more limited: It allows a court to decline to enforce a statute, and to enjoin the executive from enforcing that statute. But the judicially disapproved statute continues to exist as a law until it is repealed by the legislature that enacted it, even as it goes unenforced by the judiciary or the executive. And it is always possible that a future court might overrule the decision that declared the statute unconstitutional, thereby liberating the executive to resume enforcing the statute against anyone who has violated it. Judicial review is not a power to suspend or "strike down" legislation; it is a judicially imposed non-enforcement policy that lasts only as long as the courts adhere to the constitutional objections that persuaded them to thwart the statute's enforcement. When judges or elected officials mistakenly assume that a court decision has canceled or revoked a duly enacted statute, they commit the "writ-of-erasure fallacy"--the fallacy that equates judicial review with a veto-like power to "strike down" legislation or delay its effective start date. This article identifies the origins of the fallacy, describes the ways in which the writ-of-erasure mindset has improperly curtailed the enforcement of statutes, and explores the implications that follow when judicial review is (correctly) understood as a temporary non-enforcement policy that leaves the disapproved statute in effect. We give a non-technical introduction to convergence–divergence models, a new modeling approach for phylogenetic data that allows for the usual divergence of lineages after lineage-splitting but also allows for taxa to converge, i.e. become more similar over time. By examining the $$3$$ -taxon case in some detail, we illustrate that phylogeneticists have been “spoiled” in the sense of not having to think about the structural parameters in their models by virtue of the strong assumption that evolution is tree-like. We show that there are not always good statistical reasons to prefer the usual class of tree-like models over more general convergence–divergence models. Specifically, we show many $$3$$ -taxon data sets can be equally well explained by supposing violation of the molecular clock due to change in the rate of evolution along different edges, or by keeping the assumption of a constant rate of evolution but instead assuming that evolution is not a purely divergent process. Given the abundance of evidence that evolution is not strictly tree-like, our discussion is an illustration that as phylogeneticists we need to think clearly about the structural form of the models we use. For cases with four taxa, we show that there will be far greater ability to distinguish models with convergence from non-clock-like tree models. Purpose: This study aimed to determine if replacing time spent in high- and low-impact physical activity (PA) predicts changes in pediatric bone mineral density (BMD) and content (BMC). Methods: We analyzed data from the longitudinal Bone Mineral Density in Childhood Study (N = 2337 with up to seven visits). The participants were age 5-19 yr at baseline, 51.2% were female, and 80.6% were nonblack. Spine, total hip, and femoral neck areal BMD and total body less head (TBLH) BMC Z-scores were calculated. Hours per day spent in high- and low-impact PA were self-reported. Standard covariate-adjusted (partition model) and time allocation-sensitive isotemporal substitution modeling frameworks were applied to linear mixed models. Statistical interactions with sex, self-reported ancestry, age, and bone fragility genetic scores (percentage of areal BMD-lowering alleles carried) were tested. Results: In standard models, high-impact PA was positively associated with bone Z-score at all four skeletal sites (e.g., TBLH-BMC Z-score: beta = 0.05, P = 2.0 x 10 -22), whereas low-impact PA was not associated with any of the bone Z-scores. In isotemporal substitution models, replacing 1 h⋅d-1 of low- for high-impact PA was associated with higher bone Z-scores (e.g., TBLH-BMC Z-score: beta = 0.06, P = 2.9 x 10-15). Conversely, replacing 1 h⋅d 1 of high-for low-impact PA was associated with lower bone Z-scores (e.g., TBLH-BMC Z-score: beta = - 0.06, P = 2.9 x 10 -15). The substitution associations were similar for each sex and ancestry group, and for those with higher and lower genetic scores for bone fragility (P-interactions > 0.05), but increased in strength among the older adolescents (P-age interactions < 0.05). Rest-activity patterns provide an indication of circadian rhythmicity in the free-living setting. We aimed to describe the distributions of rest-activity patterns in a sample of adults and children across demographic variables. A sample of adults (N = 590) and children (N = 58) wore an actigraph on their nondominant wrist for 7 days and nights. We generated rest-activity patterns from cosinor analysis (MESOR, acrophase and magnitude) and nonparametric circadian rhythm analysis (IS: interdaily stability; IV: intradaily variability; L5: least active 5-hour period; M10: most active 10-hour period; and RA: relative amplitude). Demographic variables included age, sex, race, education, marital status, and income. Linear mixed-effects models were used to test for demographic differences in rest-activity patterns. Adolescents, compared to younger children, had (1) later M10 midpoints (β = 1.12 hours [95% CI: 0.43, 1.18] and lower M10 activity levels; (2) later L5 midpoints (β = 1.6 hours [95% CI: 0.9, 2.3]) and lower L5 activity levels; (3) less regular rest-activity patterns (lower IS and higher IV); and 4) lower magnitudes (β = −0.95 [95% CI: −1.28, −0.63]) and relative amplitudes (β = −0.1 [95% CI: −0.14, −0.06]). Mid-to-older adults, compared to younger adults (aged 18–29 years), had (1) earlier M10 midpoints (β = −1.0 hours [95% CI: −1.6, −0.4]; (2) earlier L5 midpoints (β = −0.7 hours [95% CI: −1.2, −0.2]); and (3) more regular rest-activity patterns (higher IS and lower IV). The magnitudes and relative amplitudes were similar across the adult age categories. Sex, race and education level rest-activity differences were also observed. Rest-activity patterns vary across the lifespan, and differ by race, sex and education. Modern judicial review poses a unique threat to federalism, because it enables the Supreme Court to preempt state law and impose nationwide policies by a simple majority vote and without the assent of any other institution. And the current Supreme Court has shown little interest in adopting formalistic interpretive methodologies that would constrain its powers to override state law in the name of constitutional interpretation. Modern judicial interpretation of the Constitution is rooted primarily in court-created doctrines and precedents rather than constitutional language, and many of these doctrines and precedents could never have obtained the formal supermajoritarian assent needed to entrench a constitutional rule. These judicial interpretive practices are in tension with the Constitution's efforts to protect federalism and state prerogatives by making it difficult for federal institutions to enact federal laws and impose nationwide policies on the states. Those who wish to preserve a regime of constitutional federalism should think hard about ways to counteract the Supreme Court's unilateral nationwide policymaking. This is no easy task because the notion of judicial interpretive supremacy over the Constitution is well entrenched in our legal and political culture, and many of the Supreme Court's decisions to nationalize policies at the expense of state decisionmaking enjoy substantial political support. This Essay discusses the challenges that confront efforts to protect state prerogatives against the unilateral policymaking of the federal judiciary, and proposes some strategies that advocates of federalism might deploy in their efforts to chip away at the judiciary's incursions on state authority. This article provides a new account of Nietzsche's critique of metaphysical philosophy. After framing Nietzsche's anti-metaphysical project (section 1), I suggest that to understand the logic of his critique we should reconstruct a taxonomy that distinguishes between "rich metaphysics" and "thin metaphysics" (section 2). I then consider Nietzsche's methodological critique of "rich metaphysics," arguing that his position, which alleges motivational bias against "rich metaphysics," is not compelling, since even granting that previous "rich metaphysicians" exemplified such bias there is no reason that a new "rich metaphysician" should necessarily do so (section 3). Nonetheless, there is much of interest in the second aspect of Nietzsche's critique, understood in terms of indifference to "thin metaphysics," which I consider in section 4. I argue that the existing readings are unsatisfactory, and as an alternative we should think of this idea in skeptical terms by drawing on an argument from "thin metaphysical" disagreement. Bayesian analysis of macroevolutionary mixtures (BAMM) is a statistical framework that uses reversible jump Markov chain Monte Carlo to infer complex macroevolutionary dynamics of diversification and phenotypic evolution on phylogenetic trees. A recent article by Moore et al. (MEA) reported a number of theoretical and practical concerns with BAMM. Major claims from MEA are that (i) BAMM's likelihood function is incorrect, because it does not account for unobserved rate shifts; (ii) the posterior distribution on the number of rate shifts is overly sensitive to the prior; and (iii) diversification rate estimates from BAMM are unreliable. Here, we show that these and other conclusions from MEA are generally incorrect or unjustified. We first demonstrate that MEA's numerical assessment of the BAMM likelihood is compromised by their use of an invalid likelihood function. We then show that "unobserved rate shifts" appear to be irrelevant for biologically plausible parameterizations of the diversification process. We find that the purportedly extreme prior sensitivity reported byMEA cannot be replicated with standard usage of BAMMv2.5, or with any other version when conventional Bayesian model selection is performed. Finally, we demonstrate that BAMM performs very well at estimating diversification rate variation across the~20% of simulated trees inMEA's data set for which it is theoretically possible to infer rate shifts with confidence. Due to ascertainment bias, the remaining 80% of their purportedly variable-rate phylogenies are statistically indistinguishable from those produced by a constant-rate birth-death process and were thus poorly suited for the summary statistics used in their performance assessment.We demonstrate that inferences about diversification rates have been accurate and consistent across all major previous releases of the BAMM software.We recognize an acute need to address the theoretical foundations of rate-shift models for phylogenetic trees, and we expect BAMM and other modeling frameworks to improve in response to mathematical and computational innovations. However, we remain optimistic that that the imperfect tools currently available to comparative biologists have provided and will continue to provide important insights into the diversification of life on Earth. Metabolic syndrome (MetS) comprises a constellation of metabolic abnormalities that substantially increase risk for chronic illnesses. Autonomic dysregulation is closely linked to MetS, and while pathophysiological models often address chronic stress exposure, none have examined how such physiological contributions operate situationally, in a clinical setting. We used ambulatory impedance cardiography to examine indicators of cardiac autonomic control (CAC) in a sample of 50 adult primary care patients with and without MetS. Indices of independent sympathetic and parasympathetic cardiovascular control in primary care outpatients were measured during a brief stress reactivity assessment. We compared interdependent CAC features, including cardiac autonomic balance (i.e., sympathovagal reciprocity) and cardiac autonomic regulation (i.e., sympathovagal coactivation) and found significant differences among MetS participants as compared to healthy controls. In particular, cardiac autonomic regulation scores were higher among MetS patients when discussing medication concerns, and cardiac autonomic balance scores were lower among MetS patients when discussing daily stressors. These results suggest that patients meeting criteria for MetS demonstrate momentary variations in CAC depending on personally relevant health topics. Modern Fourteenth Amendment doctrine is difficult to square with constitutional text. The text of the Equal Protection Clause, for example, makes no distinction between racial classifications and other discriminatory practices; it requires equal protection of the laws for every "person" within a state's jurisdiction. Nor does the text require equal treatment or equal rights; it requires equality only in the "protection of the laws." Yet the Supreme Court assumes that the Equal Protection Clause is implicated whenever a state treats people differently--without pausing to ask whether the state has withheld the equal "protection of the laws." And the Court has created a textually unsupportable distinction between racial discrimination, which it subjects to "strict scrutiny," and other discriminatory practices that receive "rational basis review.". Yet textualism has been enjoying a resurgence in both constitutional and statutory interpretation. This resurgence raises two questions for the Court's equality doctrines. The first is whether those who embrace textualism must reject the Court's equality jurisprudence as textually illegitimate. The second is whether those who embrace the Supreme Court's landmark equality pronouncements must reject textualism as incompatible with those rulings. The answer to both questions is no. Almost all of the Supreme Court's canonical racial-equality decisions have a firm textual foundation in congressional civil rights legislation--a fact that the Supreme Court has all but ignored by insisting on grounding its equality pronouncements exclusively in the Equal Protection Clause. And Congress enacted most of these civil rights statutes before the Supreme Court invoked the Equal Protection Clause to declare a discriminatory practice unconstitutional. So these civil rights statutes can and should be used to supply textual support for the Court's decisions and doctrines, especially in cases where the Equal Protection Clause and other constitutional provisions are textually ill suited for the task. The authors study a wide range of atmospheric circulations with an idealized moist general circulation model to evaluate the mechanisms controlling intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) migrations. They employ a zonally symmetric aquaplanet slab ocean of fixed depth and force top-of-atmosphere insolation to remain fixed at the pole for an "eternal solstice" simulation and also vary seasonally for a range of rotation rates, keeping all other parameters Earth-like. For rotation rates ΩE/8 and slower, a transient maximum in zonal-mean precipitation appears at the summer pole; however, the ITCZ associated with the ascending branch of the Hadley circulation lies at ∼60°. The authors assess how widely used predictors of the ITCZ position perform in this wide parameter space. Standard predictors based on different estimates of the Hadley cell's poleward extent are correlated with but overestimate off-equatorial ITCZ locations. Interestingly, in the eternal-solstice case for Earth's rotation rate, the ITCZ remains at subtropical latitudes even though the lower-level moist static energy maximizes at the summer pole. While seemingly at odds with convective quasi-equilibrium arguments, this can happen because at Earth's rotation rates, the thermal stratification set in convective regions can only be communicated within the tropics, where temperature gradients are constrained to be weak. The authors therefore develop an understanding of the ITCZ's position based on top-ofatmosphere energetics and the boundary layermomentumbudget and argue that friction and pressure gradient forces determine the region of maximum convergence, offering a modified dynamical perspective on the monsoon-like seasonal weather patterns of terrestrial planets. Purpose: We aimed to determine whether moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and sedentary behavior (SB) were independently associated with body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) in children and adolescents. Methods: Data from the International Children's Accelerometry Database were used to address our objectives (N = 11,115; 6-18 yr; 51% female). We calculated age- and gender-specific BMI and WC z-scores and used accelerometry to estimate MVPA and total SB. Self-reported television viewing was used as a measure of leisure time SB. Quantile regression was used to analyze the data. Results: MVPA and total SB were associated with lower and higher BMI and WC z-scores, respectively. These associations were strongest at the higher percentiles of the z-score distributions. After including MVPA and total SB in the same model, the MVPA associations remained, but the SB associations were no longer present. For example, each additional hour per day of MVPA was not associated with BMI z-score at the 10th percentile (b = -0.02, P = 0.170) but was associated with lower BMI z-score at the 50th (b = -0.19, P < 0.001) and 90th percentiles (b = -0.41, P < 0.001). More television viewing was associated with higher BMI and WC, and the associations were strongest at the higher percentiles of the z-score distributions, with adjustment for MVPA and total SB. Conclusions: Our observation of stronger associations at the higher percentiles indicates that increasing MVPA and decreasing television viewing at the population-level could shift the upper tails of the BMI and WC frequency distributions to lower values, thereby lowering the number of children and adolescents classified as obese. This investigation utilizes structural equation modeling (SEM) to build and test a comprehensive model of specific and global risk perception. A sample of 325 undergraduate females responded to measures of previous victimization, problematic alcohol use, and maladaptive coping. They also rated perceived risk in multiple hypothetical dating vignettes. The results revealed strong relationships between problematic alcohol use and both decreased specific and increased global risk perception. In addition, previous victimization and maladaptive coping were related to increased global risk perception and specific risk perception, respectively. Behavioral shifts can initiate morphological evolution by pushing lineages into new adaptive zones. This has primarily been examined in ecological behaviors, such as foraging, but social behaviors may also alter morphology. Swallows and martins (Hirundinidae) are aerial insectivores that exhibit a range of social behaviors, from solitary to colonial breeding and foraging. Using a well-resolved phylogenetic tree, a database of social behaviors, and morphological measurements, we ask how shifts from solitary to social breeding and foraging have affected morphological evolution in the Hirundinidae. Using a threshold model of discrete state evolution, we find that shifts in both breeding and foraging social behavior are common across the phylogeny of swallows. Solitary swallows have highly variable morphology, while social swallows show much less absolute variance in all morphological traits. Metrics of convergence based on both the trajectory of social lineages through morphospace and the overall morphological distance between social species scaled by their phylogenetic distance indicate strong convergence in social swallows, especially socially foraging swallows. Smaller physical traits generally observed in social species suggest that social species benefit from a distinctive flight style, likely increasing maneuverability and foraging success and reducing in-flight collisions within large flocks.
