Abstract

The U.S. Supreme Court ruling in United Automobile Workers versus Johnson Controls prohibits hiring policies that exclude fertile women from industries posing reproductive health risks to workers and fetuses. Many toxic substances that threaten the developing fetus also pose risks to adult male and female workers. Exclusionary employment policies are socially undesirable for the following reasons: they may lead to worse reproductive outcomes if the indirect effects of lower wages and less adequate health insurance in the alternative available jobs are considered. Second, the effect of such policies could damage the individual woman's overall well-being through its economic impact and her potential loss in autonomy. Third, occupational segregation into less hazardous but lower-paying jobs reinforces gender stereotypes that are restrictive to women. The Supreme Court ruling in the Johnson Controls case reaffirms the importance of the Civil Rights Act as both a shield against unfair treatment for individual women and a commitment to eradicate sexist attitudes and economic inequality throughout society.

Abstract

This study presents a structuration approach to reach a high luminous transmittance (T l u m ) and solar modulation efficiency (Δ T s o l ) of thermochromic vanadium dioxide ( VO 2 ) thin films. Before starting optical simulations, we confirm that the optical properties of monoclinic VO 2 continuous films deposited by reactive magnetron sputtering show a good correspondence with numerical results. Then, calculations on ordered VO 2 nanostripes demonstrate an enhanced transmittance due to the presence of vertical openings, leading to a variety of photonic effects. A series of optimizations by varying the column width, period, and film thickness establishes that 20 nm wide and 10 nm separated nanostripes have a Δ T s o l of 14.2% and a T l u m of 47.6% for a film thickness of 250 nm. In comparison to a dense film without nanostructuring, the film transparency (related to T l u m ) is significantly enhanced, while Δ T s o l remains unchanged. Furthermore, this also translates into a favorable, less opaque color, so the geometry could be useful for various thermochromic applications, such as smart windows. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We studied microsatellite frequency and distribution in 21.76-Mb random genomic sequences, 0.67-Mb BAC sequences from the Z chromosome, and 6.3-Mb EST sequences of Bombyx mori. We mined microsatellites of [greater than or equal to] 15 bases of mononucleotide repeats and [greater than or equal to] 5 repeat units of other classes of repeats. We estimated that microsatellites account for 0.31% of the genome of B. mori. Microsatellite tracts of A, AT, and ATT were the most abundant whereas their number drastically decreased as the length of the repeat motif increased. In general, tri- and hexanucleotide repeats were overrepresented in the transcribed sequences except TAA, GTA, and TGA, which were in excess in genomic sequences. The Z chromosome sequences contained shorter repeat types than the rest of the chromosomes in addition to a higher abundance of AT-rich repeats. Our results showed that base composition of the flanking sequence has an influence on the origin and evolution of microsatellites. Transitions/transversions were high in microsatellites of ESTs, whereas the genomic sequence had an equal number of substitutions and indels. The average heterozygosity value for 23 polymorphic microsatellite loci surveyed in 13 diverse silkmoth strains having 2-14 alleles was 0.54. Only 36 (18.2%) of 198 microsatellite loci were polymorphic between the two divergent silkworm populations and 10 (5%) loci revealed null alleles. The microsatellite map generated using these polymorphic markers resulted in 8 linkage groups. B. mori microsatellite loci were the most conserved in its immediate ancestor, B. mandarina, followed by the wild saturniid silkmoth, Antheraea assama.

Abstract

We present an experimental setup capable of quantitative examination of acoustic whistlers in tubes of varying lengths and diameters. It is simple enough to be used as an undergraduate lab or classroom demonstration. The setup can be used to show the transverse modes of a cavity, and the difference between the group and phase velocity of a wave, It can also be used to determine the velocity of sound to an accuracy of 3%. We present the results of several experiments used to determine the acoustic modes present in transient whistlers. Our results differ significantly from a 'geometrical acoustics' derivation of the acoustic whistler made in an earlier paper.

Abstract

Idealizations and approximations of physical circuits are used to mathematically demonstrate the general condition under which energy transfer to a capacitor is complete. It is proven that energy delivery to the capacitor is complete, without the missing energy, for so long as the voltage across a capacitor is continuous and differentiable. Two idealized circuits that are exceptions to this general condition are also analyzed.

Abstract

Automatic classification of blog entries is generally treated as a semi-supervised machine learning task, in which the blog entries are automatically assigned to one of a set of pre-defined classes based on the features extracted from their textual content. This paper attempts automatic classification of unstructured blog entries by following pre-processing steps like tokenization, stop-word elimination and stemming; statistical techniques for feature set extraction, and feature set enhancement using semantic resources followed by modeling using two alternative machine learning models—the na?ve Bayesian model and the artificial neural network model. Empirical evaluations indicate that this multi-step classification approach has resulted in good overall classification accuracy over unstructured blog text datasets with both machine learning model alternatives. However, the na?ve Bayesian classification model clearly out-performs the ANN based classification model when a smaller feature-set is available which is usually the case when a blog topic is recent and the number of training datasets available is restricted.
