1. Exact solvability of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation for bound states subjected to general potentials

Abstract

In this paper we present the analytic solution to the problem of bound states of the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation in 1D and its properties, in the presence of external potentials in the form of finite square wells or attractive Dirac deltas, as well as stable solitons for repulsive defects. We show that the GP equation can be mapped to a first-order non-autonomous dynamical system, whose solutions can sometimes be written in terms of known functions. The formal solutions of this non-conservative system can be written with the help of Glauber-Trotter formulas or a series of ordered exponentials in the coordinate $x$. With this we illustrate how to solve any nonlinear problem based on a construction due to Mello and Kumar for the linear case (layered potentials). For the benefit of the reader, we comment on the difference between the integrability of a quantum system and the solvability of the wave equation., Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures

Abstract

An analytical model was developped to describe the current induced DW dynamics of a Bloch DW in the presence of an external transverse magnetic field. The model takes into account the DW deformation and the magnetization tilting in the domain. The model is compared to the results of micromagnetic simulation and an excellent agreement is obtained. In the steady state regime, the model shows that the domain tilting does not change the DW mobility. An external or current induced transverse magnetic field such as the Oersted or Rashba field can prevent the Walker breakdown leading to a higher domain wall velocity., Comment: to be published in Journal of Applied Physics

Abstract

We present a detailed study of the polycrystalline perovskite manganites La0.67Ca0.33AlxMn1-xO3 (x = 0, 0.1, 0.15, 0.5) at low temperatures and high magnetic fields, including electrical resistance, magnetization, ac susceptibility. The static magnetic susceptibility was also measured up to 1000 K. All the samples show colossal magnetoresistance behavior and the Curie temperatures decrease with Al doping. The data suggest the presence of correlated magnetic clusters near by the ferromagnetic transition. This appears to be a consequence of the structural and magnetic disorder created by the random distribution of Al atoms., Comment: 13 pages including 5 figures

Abstract

The JRC‘s Centre for Advanced Studies (CAS) was created in 2016 to help improve and bridge the interface between science and policy in order to enhance the JRC‘s capacity to better inform and influence the regulatory frameworks needed to address the new and emerging societal challenges confronting the EU and our societies as a whole. By creating the conditions necessary for innovative and interdisciplinary research, as well as offering a creative and generative space in which ideas and knowledge in emerging thematic fields across different scientific and technological disciplines can thrive and flourish, CAS has become an incubator for formal inquiry, stimulating ideas and activities and providing the JRC with new insights, data projections and solutions for the increasingly complex medium and longterm challenges facing the EU, especially in the fields of demography, big data and digital transformation. Through the performance of advanced, cutting edge research, ranging from applied research to topics of a more academic character, all within a stimulating trans- and interdisciplinary environment, CAS allows external researchers and scientists to work together with the JRC to explore and exchange new ideas and knowledge on scientific research in emerging fields of strategic societal importance, which might otherwise fall outside the policy support activities undertaken by the JRC on behalf of the European Commission.

Abstract

International audience; Objectives Data are scarce regarding the potential clinical differences between non-late onset schizophrenia (NLOS, i.e., disorder occurring before 40 years of age), late-onset schizophrenia (LOS, occurring between ages 40 and 60 years) and very-late-onset schizophrenia-like psychosis (VLOSLP, occurring after 60 years of age). Furthermore, previous research compared LOS patients with non-age matched NLOS patients. In this study, we sought to examine potential clinical differences between patients of similar age with LOS and NLOS. Methods/Design This is a cross-sectional multicentre study that recruited in- and outpatients older adults (aged >= 55 years) with an ICD-10 diagnosis of schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder with NLOS and LOS. Sociodemographic and clinical characteristics, comorbidity, psychotropic medications, quality of life, functioning, and mental health care utilization were drawn for comparison. Results Two hundred seventy-two participants (79.8%) had NLOS, 61 (17.9%) LOS, and 8 (2.3%) VLOSLP. LOS was significantly and independently associated with greater severity of emotional withdrawal and lower severity of depression (all p < 0.05). However, the magnitude of these associations was modest, with significant adjusted odds ratios ranging from 0.71 to 1.24, and there were no significant between-group differences in other characteristics. Conclusion In an age-matched multicenter sample of elderly patients with schizophrenia, older adults with LOS were largely similar to older adults with NLOS in terms of clinical characteristics. The few differences observed may be at least partially related to symptom fluctuation with time. Implications of these findings for pharmacological and nonpharmacological management is yet to be determined.

Abstract

The JRC's Centre for Advanced Studies (CAS) was created in 2016 to help improve and bridge the interface between science and policy in order to enhance the JRC's capacity to better inform and influence the regulatory frameworks needed to address the new and emerging societal challenges confronting the EU and our societies as a whole. By creating the conditions necessary for innovative and interdisciplinary research, as well as offering a creative and generative space in which ideas and knowledge in emerging thematic fields across different scientific and technological disciplines can thrive and flourish, CAS has become an incubator for formal inquiry, stimulating ideas and activities and providing the JRC with new insights, data projections and solutions for the increasingly complex medium and longterm challenges facing the EU, especially in the fields of demography, big data and digital transformation. Through the performance of advanced, cutting edge research, ranging from applied research to topics of a more academic character, all within a stimulating trans- and interdisciplinary environment, CAS allows external researchers and scientists to work together with the JRC to explore and exchange new ideas and knowledge on scientific research in emerging fields of strategic societal importance, which might otherwise fall outside the policy support activities undertaken by the JRC on behalf of the European Commission. Projects are typically led by a senior scientist with an established reputation in the research area and have a limited duration of a maximum of three years, after which they may be integrated into the JRC‘s core research activities.

Abstract

The severity of psychopathology has a strong negative impact on quality of life (QoL) among older adults with schizophrenia spectrum disorder. However, because these subjects generally experience multiple psychiatric symptoms, it remains unclear whether decreased QoL in this population is due to specific symptoms (e.g., hallucinations), specific dimensions of psychopathology (e.g., negative symptoms), a general psychopathology dimension representing the shared effect across all psychiatric symptoms, or a combination of these explanations. Data were derived from the Cohort of individuals with Schizophrenia Aged 55 years or more (CSA) study, a large (N = 353) multicenter sample of older adults with schizophrenia spectrum disorder recruited from French public-sector psychiatric departments. We used structural equation modeling to examine the shared and specific effects of psychiatric symptoms on QoL, while adjusting for sociodemographic characteristics, general medical conditions, global cognitive functioning and psychotropic medications. Psychiatric symptoms and QoL were assessed face-to-face by psychiatrists using the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) and the Quality of Life Scale (QLS). Abstract

Exchange bias effects have been studied in elliptical dots composed of ferromagnetic Ni80Fe20–antiferromagnetic Ir20Mn80 bilayers. The magnetization reversal mechanisms and magnetic configurations have been investigated by magneto-optic Kerr effect and magnetic force microscopy. Although the obtained bias fields in these dots are relatively small, the magnetization reversal is found to be influenced by the ferromagnetic–antiferromagnetic coupling. Namely, for some off-axis angles of measurement, the magnetization reversal mechanism of the Ni80Fe20–Ir20Mn80 ellipses depends on whether exchange bias is induced along the minor or major axis of the ellipses. Hence, exchange bias is shown to be an effective means for tailoring the magnetization reversal of elliptical dots after sample fabrication. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Organ donors are sources of physiologically healthy organs and tissues for life-saving transplantation, and have been recently used for human immunology studies which are typically confined to the sampling of peripheral blood. Donors comprise a diverse population with different causes of death and clinical outcomes during hospitalization, and the effects of such variations on immune parameters in blood and tissues are not known. We present here a coordinate analysis of innate and adaptive immune components in blood, lymphoid (bone marrow, spleen, lymph nodes), and mucosal (lungs, intestines) sites from a population of brain-dead organ donors (2 months-93 years; n = 291) across eight clinical parameters. Overall, the blood of donors exhibited similar monocyte and lymphocyte content and low serum levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines as healthy controls; however, donor blood had increased neutrophils and serum levels of IL-8, IL-6, and MCP-1 which varied with cause of death. In tissues, the frequency and composition of monocytes, neutrophils, B lymphocytes and T cell subsets in lymphoid or mucosal sites did not vary with clinical state, and was similar in donors independent of the extent of clinical complications. Our results reveal that organ donors maintain tissue homeostasis, and are a valuable resource for fundamental studies in human immunology.

45. Tissue reservoirs of antiviral T cell immunity in persistent human CMV infection

Abstract

T cell responses to viruses are initiated and maintained in tissue sites; however, knowledge of human antiviral T cells is largely derived from blood. Cytomegalovirus (CMV) persists in most humans, requires T cell immunity to control, yet tissue immune responses remain undefined. Here, we investigated human CMV-specific T cells, virus persistence and CMV-associated T cell homeostasis in blood, lymphoid, mucosal and secretory tissues of 44 CMV seropositive and 28 seronegative donors. CMV-specific T cells were maintained in distinct distribution patterns, highest in blood, bone marrow (BM), or lymph nodes (LN), with the frequency and function in blood distinct from tissues. CMV genomes were detected predominantly in lung and also in spleen, BM, blood and LN. High frequencies of activated CMV-specific T cells were found in blood and BM samples with low virus detection, whereas in lung, CMV-specific T cells were present along with detectable virus. In LNs, CMV-specific T cells exhibited quiescent phenotypes independent of virus. Overall, T cell differentiation was enhanced in sites of viral persistence with age. Together, our results suggest tissue T cell reservoirs for CMV control shaped by both viral and tissue-intrinsic factors, with global effects on homeostasis of tissue T cells over the lifespan.

Abstract

The relative importance of plants and insects as sources of protein through the year was evaluated in 2 bat species in a seasonal forest in the neotropics using stable-isotope analysis of carbon and nitrogen. Artibeus jamaicensis, a frugivore, met almost all of its protein requirements from plants with no seasonal or sexual variation. In contrast, Glossophaga soricina, a nectarivore, relied mostly on insects, but in females, plants and insects were equally important in the early rainy season and in the mid dry season. Evidence of changes in food origin of protein associated with reproductive activity was not detected in either species. 48. Improving score-informed source separation for classical music through note refinement

Comunicació presentada a la 16th International Society for Music Information Retrieval Conference (ISMIR 2015), celebrada els dies 26 a 30 d'octubre de 2015 a Màlaga, Espanya. Signal decomposition methods such as Non-negative Matrix Factorization (NMF) demonstrated to be a suitable approach for music signal processing applications, including sound source separation. To better control this decomposition, NMF has been extended using prior knowledge and parametric models. In fact, using score information considerably improved separation results. Nevertheless, one of the main problems of using score information is the misalignment between the score and the actual performance. A potential solution to this problem is the use of audio to score alignment systems. However, most of them rely on a tolerance window that clearly affects the separation results. To overcome this problem, we propose a novel method to refine the aligned score at note level by detecting both, onset and offset for each note present in the score. Note refinement is achieved by detecting shapes and contours in the estimated instrument-wise time activation (gains) matrix. Decomposition is performed in a supervised way, using training instrument models and coarsely-aligned score information. The detected contours define time-frequency note boundaries, and they increase the sparsity. Finally, we have evaluated our method for informed source separation using a dataset of Bach chorales obtaining satisfactory results, especially in terms of SIR. Abstract

Aim of the study. The purpose of this study was to develop a new method to facilitate laser Doppler tooth vitality assessment, using a digitally designed probe holder. Material and methods. A laser Doppler probe holder was digitally designed after scanning a casted model and then the probe holder was 3D printed. In order to test the probe holders, a straight optical probe from MoorLab instruments was used. Conclusions. The probe holder proved to be stable and could be used to obtain accurate signal acquisition in these experimental conditions, however further testing is necessary.

Abstract

Abstract Background Protein-protein interactions form the basis of every organism and thus, investigating their dynamics, intracellular protein localization, trafficking and interactions of distinct proteins such as receptors and their ligand-binding are of general interest. Bioluminescence resonance energy transfer (BRET) is a powerful tool to investigate these aspects in vitro. Since in vitro approaches mostly neglect the more complex in vivo situation, we established BRET as an in vivo tool for studying protein interactions in the nematode C. elegans. Results We generated worms expressing NanoBRET sensors and elucidated the interaction of two ligand-G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) pairs, the neuropeptide receptor NPR-11 and the Adhesion GPCR LAT-1. Furthermore, we adapted the enhanced bystander BRET technology to measure subcellular protein localization. Using this approach, we traced ligand-induced internalization of NPR-11 in vivo. Conclusions Our results indicate that in vivo NanoBRET is a tool to investigate specific protein interactions and localization in a physiological setting in real time in the living organism C. elegans.
