New Italian data on the distribution of the Annex I Habitats are reported in this contribution. Specifically, 9 new occurrences in Natura 2000 sites are presented and 34 new cells are added in the EEA 10 km × 10 km reference grid. The new data refer to the Italian administrative regions of Abruzzo, Apulia, Calabria, Latium, Lombardy, Marche, Sardinia, Sicily, Tuscany and Umbria.

Campanula fragilis Cirillo is a species distributed in central and southern Italy and includes two subspecies with uncertain taxonomic position and distribution. By means of nuclear and chloroplast markers, we attempted at testing the genetic distinctness of the two subspecies, as well as their possible correspondence with geographical or ecological patterns. After a revision of geographic occurrences based on herbarium data, we carried out species distribution modeling to assess the present and future distribution of this species under different ecological variables, also for conservation purposes. Our findings support the recognition of two weakly differentiated taxa, here accepted at subspecific rank, in agreement with the current taxonomic treatment. We found that C. fragilis subsp. cavolinii is monophyletic and limited to mountains and hills of central Italy. On the contrary, C. fragilis subsp. fragilis shows a higher genetic variability and a broader distribution in central and southern Italy, with a wider altitudinal range from coasts to mountain cliffs. We confirmed that both subspecies are narrowly calcicolous and have similar ecological requirements, but C. fragilis subsp. cavolinii occurs in colder habitats. Our results forecast a significant distribution contraction in the long term.

ObjectiveFood Addiction (FA) and other well-known risk behavior as substance misuse tend to co-occur and may share similar risk and protective factors. The aim of this study was to assess the association between the diagnosis/severity of FA and psychosocial domains typically related to risk behavior syndrome in a large, nationally representative community sample of Generation Z underage Italian students.MethodThe sample consisted of 8,755 students (3,623 from middle schools, 5,132 from high schools). A short version of the Yale Food Addiction Scale 2.0 was administered to evaluate FA. Risk and protective factors related to demographic, personality, behavior, and family variables were examined. Stepwise multivariate logistic and linear regressions were conducted.ResultsThe prevalence of FA was 30.8%. Female gender, social anxiety and depression symptoms, social withdrawal risk, Internet gaming disorder, social media addiction, current substance use, social challenge engagement and experienced doxing boosted the chance of FA diagnosis, whereas eating fruit and vegetables, playing competitive sports and an average sleep duration of 7–8 h per night reduced these odds. FA severity was significantly and positively associated with trait impulsiveness, social anxiety and depressive symptoms, risk of social withdrawal, recent substance use, social media, and gaming addiction, doxing suffered and risky social challenges participation. Negative associations between the severity of FA and fruit and vegetable diet habits were found.ConclusionOur findings confirm that FA is widespread among Italian adolescents. The associations between the diagnosis and severity of FA and psychosocial risk factors for health, including, addictive and deviant behaviors related to digital misuse, suggest its belonging to the risk behavior constellation. Health promotion schemes based on a multicomponent strategy of intervention should consider the inclusion of FA and its psychosocial correlates.

Introduction and aimThe excessive involvement in physical activity without stopping in between sessions despite injuries, the continuous thinking to exercise feeling insane thoughts and experiencing withdrawal symptoms are all characteristics of the Exercise Addiction (EA), an addictive behavior. While the primary exercise addiction is directly caused by compulsive exercise, many studies highlighted the relationship between Eating Disorders (ED) and EA, defining the secondary EA. The correlation between EA, social media use (SMU) and other individual traits remains a relatively underexplored domain. Therefore, this review aimed to examine the latest evidence on the relationship between EA, SMU, and some personality traits such as perfectionism and body image.MethodsElectronic databases including PubMed, Medline, PsycARTICLES, Embase, Web of Science were searched from January 2019 to October 2023, following the PRISMA guidelines.ResultsA total of 15 articles were examined and consolidated in this review. EA was found to be related to different individual traits such perfectionism, body dissatisfaction, depression, obsessive-compulsive personality disorders. While controversial results were found regarding the relationship between EA and SMU.ConclusionThe interaction between mental health, exercise addiction and social media use is complex. Excessive engagement in these latter may result in negative mental health consequences despite their potential benefits. Understanding individual differences and developing effective interventions is crucial to promoting healthy habits and mitigating the EA risks, ultimately enhancing mental well-being. Further research should focus on the identification of risks and protective factors with the eventual aim of developing and implementing effective prevention strategies.

The decarbonization of the shipping industry is pushing towards the introduction of low-carbon fuels such as hydrogen carriers and towards the installation of cleaner propulsion systems. Among different hydrogen carriers, ammonia (NH3) is considered a promising option due to its high volumetric energy density and to its easier storage and transportation in comparison with pure hydrogen. Therefore, this study is focused on the design, modeling, and feasibility assessment of ammonia-based propulsion systems for shipping applications. Two NH3-based fuel cell power generation systems are analyzed: i) a NH3-based Proton exchange membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) system and ii) a NH3-based Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) system. These systems are designed to replace a conventional diesel powertrain installed on board a container ship. The fuel consumption, according to the ship load profile, is calculated and the analysis on the masses and volumes of the fuel storage tanks and of the ammonia powertrain systems is performed. Results highlight that on board installation of the proposed ammonia-based propulsion technologies causes greater masses and volumes with respect to the conventional diesel system. This criticality, in the face of an advantage in terms of avoided CO2 emissions per cruise, could be overcome by accepting a cargo capacity reduction. It is estimated a cargo reduction in the range 3.3% − 4.8% for the proposed fuel cell-based powertrain solutions. However, by valorizing the avoided CO2 emissions, it is possible to recover the economic penalty due the cargo reduction and break-even with the reference diesel scenario.

Grapevine fanleaf virus (GFLV) (genus Nepovirus, family Secoviridae) causes fanleaf degeneration, one of the most damaging viral diseases of grapevines. Despite substantial advances at deciphering GFLV-host interactions, how this virus overcomes the host antiviral pathways of RNA silencing is poorly understood. In this study, we identified viral suppressors of RNA silencing (VSRs) encoded by GFLV, using fluorescence assays, and tested their capacity at modifying host gene expression in transgenic Nicotiana benthamiana expressing the enhanced green fluorescent protein gene (EGFP). Results revealed that GFLV RNA1-encoded protein 1A, for which a function had yet to be assigned, and protein 1BHel, a putative helicase, reverse systemic RNA silencing either individually or as a fused form (1ABHel) predicted as an intermediary product of RNA1 polyprotein proteolytic processing. The GFLV VSRs differentially altered the expression of plant host genes involved in RNA silencing, as shown by reverse transcription-quantitative PCR. In a co-infiltration assay with an EGFP hairpin construct, protein 1A upregulated NbDCL2, NbDCL4, and NbRDR6, and proteins 1BHel and 1A+1BHel upregulated NbDCL2, NbDCL4, NbAGO1, NbAGO2, and NbRDR6, while protein 1ABHel upregulated NbAGO1 and NbRDR6. In a reversal of systemic silencing assay, protein 1A upregulated NbDCL2 and NbAGO2 and protein 1ABHel upregulated NbDCL2, NbDCL4, and NbAGO1. This is the first report of VSRs encoded by a nepovirus RNA1 and of two VSRs that act either individually or as a predicted fused form to counteract the systemic antiviral host defense, suggesting that GFLV might devise a unique counterdefense strategy to interfere with various steps of the plant antiviral RNA silencing pathways during infection. Prenatal exposure to alcohol can cause Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASDs) after birth, encompassing a spectrum of physical, cognitive, and behavioral abnormalities. FASD represents a severe non-genetic disability avoidable through alcohol abstinence during pregnancy and when planning it. Clinical severity depends on alcohol impact, symptomatology, and resulting disabilities. FASD is a permanent disability with no recognized specific medical care. Conversely, secondary FASD-related disabilities can be symptomatically treated. This integrative review aims to provide information about the novel pharmacological treatments of FASD-associated comorbidities by selecting the last ten years of studies carried out on animals and humans. PRISMA guidelines were followed to search human/animal model studies of pharmacological interventions on FASD comorbidities, using different databases (PubMed, Cochrane, etc.). From 1348 articles, 44 met the criteria after full-text analysis. Firstly, all the reported studies point out that early diagnosis and tailored interventions are the principal tools to reduce FASD-related secondary disabilities, due to the fact that there is currently no approved pharmacological treatment for the tissue damage which produces FASD. Despite limitations in study designs and small sample sizes, these review results highlight how the treatment strategies of children with FASD have changed. In the past, studies focused on treating symptoms, but in the last years, researchers have turned their attention to the prevention targeting central nervous system embryogenesis. Novel treatments like choline and natural antioxidants and nutritional supplements are the most investigated treatments in humans with promising results. More follow-up studies need to be performed, to confirm and generalize reported efficacy to a wide sample size.

Italy legalized cannabis oil for specific medical conditions (neuropathic pain, refractory epilepsy and other established pathologies) in 2015, but mandates titration of principal cannabinoids before marketing each batch using iphenated techniques coupled with mass spectrometry. To assess reliability of laboratories from the Italian National Health Service in charge of titrating the batches, the Italian National Institute of Health set up an quality control program on determination of Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol l (THC), cannabidiol (CBD), Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinolic acid A (THCA-A) and cannabidiolic acid (CBDA) in cannabis oil preparations. Two rounds of exercises have been carried out since 2019, involving sixteen Italian laboratories. Five different cannabis oil samples (19-1A and 19-1B for the first round and 22-1A, 22-1B and 22-1C for the second one were prepared and 1 mL amount of each sample was sent to the laboratories. The quantitative performance of each laboratory was assessed calculating the Z-score value, a statistical measurement for value's relationship to the mean of a group of values. In the first round, eight out of fourteen laboratories employed an LC-MS while the remaining six used GC-MS. Differently, in the second round, six out of eleven laboratories employed a GC-MS while the remaining five used LC-MS. In the first round, only 28.6 % laboratories achieved an acceptable performance (Z-score±2), and all of them used LC-MS as analytical method. In the second round, none of the laboratories achieved an acceptable performance. Satisfactory results, based on Z-scores, were generally low (0.0–75.0 %), with only one exception of 100 % for THCA-A determination in sample 22-1B. In the second round, three false negatives (two THC and one CBD by GC-MS determination) were reported while no false positives were described in the blank sample. The two rounds yielded a mean ERR% of 42 % approximately and a mean CV% around 70 % in GC-MS determination. When applying LC-MS determination, the two rounds yielded a mean ERR% of 36 % approximately and a mean CV% around 33 %. The obtained results underline the need for a clear and consistent protocol to be adopted by all laboratories intending to include the titration of oily cannabis-based products into their routinely analytical techniques. This emphasis on methodology standardization and participation to quality control schemes is essential for ensuring reliable and accurate measurements, ultimately enhancing the overall effectiveness and reliability of medical cannabis treatments. A Staphyloccoccus aureus is one of the leading causes of food poisoning outbreaks (FPOs) worldwide. Staphylococcal food poisoning (SFP) is induced by the ingestion of food containing sufficient levels of staphylococcal enterotoxins (SEs). Currently, 33 SEs and SE-like toxins (SEls) have been described in the literature, but only five named “classical” enterotoxins are commonly investigated in FPOs due to lack of specific routine analytical techniques. The aims of this study were to (i) establish the genetic profile of strains in a variety of artisanal cheeses (n = 30) in Belgium, (ii) analyze the expression of the SE(l)s by these strains and (iii) compare the output derived from the different analytical tools. Forty-nine isolates of S. aureus were isolated from ten Belgian artisanal cheeses and were analyzed via microbiological, immunological, liquid chromatography mass spectrometry, molecular typing and genetic methods. The results indicated that classical SEs were not the dominant SEs in the Belgian artisanal cheeses that were analyzed in this study, and that all S. aureus isolates harbored at least one gene encoding a new SE(l). Among the new SE(l)s genes found, some of them code for enterotoxins with demonstrated emetic activity and ecg-enterotoxins. It is worth noting that the involvement of some of these new SEs has been demonstrated in SFP outbreaks. Thus, this study highlighted the importance of the development of specific techniques for the proper investigation of SFP outbreaks.

Early detection of Xylella fastidiosa outbreaks in Apulian olive groves is crucial, especially in buffer zones and pathogen-free areas where olive trees are asymptomatic. Three studies were conducted. Two were on the spatial and temporal progression of X. fastidiosa infections in tree canopies of asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic olive trees of tolerant (‘Leccino’) and susceptible (‘Cellina di Nardò’ and ‘Ogliarola salentina’) cultivars. Despite different trends in pathogen infection rates and concentrations between ‘Leccino’ and susceptible olive cultivars over the study period, results showed that sampling was most effective in the mid-upper part of tree canopies throughout the year, excluding the warmest and coldest periods. Stem xylem tissues were the most appropriate for detecting the pathogen compared to lower parts of mature leaves with petioles, using serological and molecular assays. Based on these results, a third study was conducted to compare molecular and serological tests (qPCR, real-time LAMP, DAS-ELISA, DTBIA) for detection of X. fastidiosa in the mid-upper part of asymptomatic branches of infected ‘Leccino’ trees that were sampled in an appropriate collection time, using stem xylem tissue as the most appropriate matrix for testing. The molecular methods showed the greatest sensitivity, with no undetermined results, while among the serological assays, DTBIA was more sensitive than DAS-ELISA. An improved protocol for monitoring asymptomatic olive trees is recommended.
