Policy constraints and market incentives have made it an important foundation for developing countries such as China to develop agricultural green transition policies. This study employed the panel data of 31 provinces in China from 2003 to 2022 and the three-dimensional framework of 'institutions, technology, and marketisation' to probe whether environmental regulation constraints or expected economic revenue incentives play a critical role in China's current agriculture development. Whether the green transition of agriculture depends on environmental regulatory policy constraints and expected economic revenue incentives is related to the level of agricultural technology development and market development. Technology and market play a positive role in the agricultural green transition by enabling the realisation of agricultural green production and the realisation of the agricultural green market.

Adopting low-carbon agricultural technologies (LCATs) is fundamental to reducing carbon emissions in agriculture. Our study explores the factors influencing the adoption of LCATs and the roles of production outsourcing and specialised farming within the framework of off-farm employment. In this regard, survey data were collected from 1 040 farmers in the Yellow River region of China in 2020 to examine the effect of production outsourcing on the farmers' adoption of LCATs. Potential mechanisms associated with specialised farming and off-farm employment are considered to comprehend this relationship. We also investigate the heterogeneous effects of production outsourcing on adopting LCATs, taking different education levels and arable land areas into account. The results show a positive association between production outsourcing and farmers' LCATs adoption behaviour, even after considering self-selection bias. Specifically, outsourcing production can significantly increase the likelihood of farmers adopting low-carbon tillage, low-carbon irrigation, and low-carbon fertilisation technologies by 7.2%, 8.1%, and 7.3%, respectively. This effect is more pronounced among farmers with higher levels of education and smaller areas of arable land. Furthermore, production outsourcing increases the LCATs adoption by promoting specialised farming. The findings suggest that outsourcing is vital to alleviating the lack of LCATs adoption resulting from off-farm employment.

Social capital is an integral part of farmers’ life, which can be exogenously affected by land recuperation. Based on 1240 farmer field survey data in Gansu Province, this paper used the Logit model to analyse the influencing factors of farmers’ participation in land recuperation, and used the entropy method to measure social capital from the three dimensions of social network, social trust and social norms, and further used the propensity matching score method to measure the effect of land recuperation on farmers, and then compared the effects under different fixed ages and education groups. The following factors significantly affected farmers’ participation in land recuperation: age, years of education, migrant workers’ relationships with family and friends, relationship between migrant workers and friends and colleagues in the workplace, number of migrant workers away from home, cultivated land area, and family living standards. Land recuperation had the greatest promotion effect on farmer’ social network (163.9%), followed by social trust (28.0%) and social norm (11.3%). According to the results of group differences, land recuperation most significantly affected the social capital of farmers aged 45–55 years and household heads educated for 9–12 years compared to other age and education groups.

The sustainable intensification (SI) of cultivated land use (CLU) is important for achieving global sustainable development goals (SDGs). However, in the rapid advancement of agglomeration economies, it remains unclear whether economic agglomeration (EA) affects SI. Combined with emergy theory, this study utilized socioeconomic and natural environment data from 31 provincial administrative regions from 1990 to 2017 to evaluate the SI level in China. It further analyzed the impact of EA on SI using a spatial econometric model that includes mediating effects. The results showed that the EA level in China continued to rise, whereas the SI level continued to decline from 1990 to 2017. The mediating effect analysis showed that fiscal support for agriculture and agricultural labor productivity have a suppression effect of |−4.186|% and |−2.002|% in the local region, while cultivated land-use intensity has partial mediation of 6.350% in the local region; and agricultural labor productivity has a suppression effect of |−4.680|% on the surrounding region, while cultivated land-use intensity has stronger partial mediation relative to the local region, even up to 10.402% on surrounding regions. This implies that the impact of EA on SI involves complex paths and spatial differences. This study provides a better understanding of the reasons for the continuous decline in the SI in agglomeration-type economic development and feasible policy proposals.

IntroductionThis study analyzes the influence of risk preference on the forage planting behavior of farmers in the agro-pastoral zone from three aspects-whether or not to plant forage, the scale of forage planting, and the duration of forage planting—and pays attention to the indirect effect of credit on the farmers' forage planting behavior, as well as the heterogeneity of the influence of risk preference on the forage planting behavior of farmers from the perspectives of different farming scales, types of farmers, and differences between generations.MethodsExperimental economics, a two-stage model, is used to analyze this problem.Results and conclusionThe results show that, first, risk preference can significantly promote farmers' forage planting probability, expand forage planting scale, and increase forage planting duration. Specifically, when risk preference increases by one unit, the probability of farmers choosing to plant forage increases by 7.8%, the planting scale increases by 0.205 hm2, and the planting duration increases by 0.519 years. This conclusion remained robust after changing the explanatory variables. Second, risk preference not only directly affects farmers' forage planting behavior but also indirectly affects farmers' forage planting behavior by influencing farmers' participation in credit. Third, heterogeneity analysis shows that risk preference has a significant effect on forage planting behavior among farmers with a medium breeding degree, among pure farmers and concurrent farmers, as well as middle-aged and elderly farmers.

The importance of understanding people's preferences and the well-being of river systems cannot be overstated when it comes to the effective restoration and long-term management of these systems. This study aimed to determine the preferences of people in the Hei River Basin of China regarding the conservation, restoration, and development of ecological systems and their associated services. The research utilized a combination of random parameter logit models for distance decay. The study collected data using a choice experiment method and separated the study area into three distance-based groups: group I (within 25 km), group II (25 to 50 km), and group III (beyond 50 km). The findings showed that there was spatial heterogeneity among the people, with a higher willingness to pay for high-quality agricultural production and the lowest willingness to pay for oasis. The results revealed a complex pattern of spatial heterogeneity and indicated the need for increased awareness programs, environmental education, and the promotion of social responsibility towards environmental protection. It is essential to implement environmental policies, restore properties, and preserve ecological systems to achieve sustainable development and a sustainable environment. The findings highlight the importance of considering spatial heterogeneity and the need for increased environmental awareness, education, and policy implementation. This research can contribute to developing effective strategies for the preservation of river systems and ensuring sustainable development and a sustainable environment.

On the basis of data collected from 1208 apple farmers in the provinces of Shaanxi and Gansu, this study utilizes the weighted-frequency method to investigate the priority sequence of farmers’ preferences in choosing fertilizer-reduction and efficiency-increasing technologies. Subsequently, ordered-probit models, a mediating-effect model, and a moderating-effect model are employed to empirically analyze the influence of capital endowment on farmers’ choices related to fertilizer-reduction and efficiency-increasing technologies and their underlying mechanisms. The study further examines how agricultural-technology extension moderates these mechanisms. The main findings are: (1) The priority sequence of farmers’ choices concerning fertilizer-reduction and efficiency-increasing technologies is as follows: organic fertilizer substitution, new efficient fertilizers, soil testing and formula fertilization, green manure cultivation, straw mulching, fertilizer-reduction application, and deep mechanical application. (2) Capital endowment significantly enhances farmers’ choices in fertilizer-reduction and efficiency-increasing technologies. (3) The mechanism analyses indicate that capital endowment can promote farmers’ choices in fertilizer-reduction and efficiency-increasing technologies by improving their information-acquisition capabilities. (4) Moderation effects reveal that agricultural-technology extension methods, such as technical training, financial subsidies, and government publicity, significantly and positively moderate the relationship between information-acquisition capabilities and farmers’ choices in fertilizer-reduction and efficiency-increasing technologies. The moderating effects of educational attainment and generational differences on different agricultural-technology extension methods are heterogeneous. Technical training, financial subsidies, and government publicity can effectively enhance the positive impact of information-acquisition capabilities on farmers with a higher educational attainment. Financial subsidies can effectively strengthen the positive impact of information-acquisition capabilities on the older generation of farmers. Therefore, it is recommended to prioritize the accumulation of farmers’ capital endowment, improve their information-acquisition capabilities, and intensify agricultural-technology extension efforts, especially taking into account farmers’ educational attainment and generational differences.

Fallow is an important institutional guarantee for green agricultural development and an important measure to promote rural revitalization. Asset specificity is a crucial factor that affects farmers’ willingness to participate in fallow. In order to improve farmers’ willingness of to fallow and promote the long-term promotion of fallow system, based on the perspective of farmer differentiation, a total of 1,240 micro survey data in four cities of Gansu province was used to quantify the asset specificity by the entropy method. A multivariate ordered Logit model and a double-hurdle model were established to explore the effects of asset specificity on the willingness of farmers with different degrees of differentiation. The results show that: 1) There are differences in fallow willingness among different types of farmers. The fallow willingness of non-farmers and II part-time farmers is generally stronger than that of pure farmers and I part-time farmers. 2) Geographical location specificity has a significant negative impact on the fallow willingness of the four types of non-fallow farmers, and has significant negative impacts on the subsequent fallow willingness and fallow degree of the four types of fallow farmers. 3) Physical asset specificity has a significant negative effect on the fallow willingness of pure farmers, I part-time and II part-time farmers among non-fallow farmers, but has little effect on the subsequent fallow willingness of fallow farmers. 4) Human capital specificity has a significant negative impact on the fallow willingness of the four types of non-fallow farmers, and has a significant negative impact on the subsequent fallow willingness and fallow degree of the four types of fallow farmers.

Although the nutritional and health benefits of buckwheat foods have been widely discussed and evaluated, studies on consumer perceptions of the health benefits of buckwheat functional foods and how these perceived benefits influence their consumption are scarce. On the basis of the theory of planned behavior, this study aimed to explore consumers' purchase intention and behavior toward buckwheat functional foods while assessing the impact of their perceived susceptibility and severity of health concerns on the purchase decisions for such foods. Using data from 1077 participants collected in person from Southwest China, we compared the influencing factors between consumer groups based on whether they were aware of the nutritive and health benefits of buckwheat. The results indicated that, apart from consumers' perceived behavioral control, their perceived susceptibility and perceived severity of three selected common health problems, perceived value and efficacy of buckwheat, and subjective norms were strong predictors of consumers' purchase decisions. Moreover, perceived susceptibility and severity were effective antecedents of the perceived value and efficacy of buckwheat, respectively. Consumers aware of buckwheat's nutritive and health benefits of buckwheat were less affected by perceived efficacy. This study highlights that the higher the susceptibility to the three selected common health problems, the greater the internal and behavioral changes toward the purchase of buckwheat functional foods. These findings reveal factors affecting consumers' healthy eating beliefs, which can be beneficial for both policymakers and marketers in formulating healthy diet policies and strategies in developing countries.

Clarifying the impact of psychological ownership on public participation in transboundary eco-compensation will contribute to compensation transforming from the current government-led economic incentive mode to the normative guidance of effective public participation, which is of great significance to transboundary management of water resources. From the perspective of social psychology, this paper uses a double hurdle model, empirically analyzes the impact of psychological ownership on public participation, and explores the internal laws and driving mechanisms of behavior. Results show the willingness to participate mainly depends on the public's judgment of self-ability and their own responsibility and values, while the degree of participation depends on the judgment and grasp of self-governance ability. The more they agree that protecting the environment is the responsibility and obligation of citizens, the lower their willingness to pay. China's long-term ‘government-led environmental governance’ mode has led to the formation of a serious government dependence psychology among the public. Highlights We analyze the impact of the psychological ownership on the public participation in China's transboundary eco-compensation.; Empirical results show that public's willingness to participate and the degree of participation are two different decision-making processes.; It is of great significance to internalize the government-led eco-compensation into individual protection behavior norms to promote public participation.;

The neglect of wildlife in grassland ecosystem conservation may lead to severe ecological consequences. Humans use more than 99% of the natural grassland in China, but local herders' attitude and willingness to pay for wildlife conservation in grassland ecological restoration have not been studied. This study evaluated local herders' preferences and willingness to pay for increasing the wildlife population in grassland ecosystem conservation through a choice experiment in Siziwang Banner and Damao Banner of Inner Mongolia, China. The results show that herders have a positive preference for improving vegetation coverage, grassland landscape, and groundwater level, but they are averse to the growth of the wildlife population, and their preferences toward the issue are heterogeneous. The sources of heterogeneity include the gender of the respondents, whether they are village cadres, whether their families raise sheep, whether they are preparing for migration and family size. Sheep farmers, female respondents, non-village cadres, smaller families, and those preparing for migration are more opposed to the increase in wildlife population than the other groups. An increase in wildlife will cause welfare loss among herders. Specifically, the average marginal willingness to pay for the rise in the frequency of wildlife sightings is −21.57 CNY (1 USD = 6.7744 CNY) per year, and the total welfare loss of herder households in the study area is 1.22 million CNY per year due to each unit increase in the frequency of wildlife sightings. We suggest that herders' support for wildlife conservation should be gained through education and ecological compensation to avoid unexpected grassland ecological consequences. Our results are applicable globally because most natural grasslands are under human use, and the conflict between wildlife and humans has been observed globally.

China has witnessed accelerated urbanization since the reforms and open policies which began in 1978. This eventually resulted in increased residential water requirements and worsening water shortages, particularly in the current century. In the context of resource and environmental constraints, improving agricultural water use efficiency (AWUE) is a crucial issue to ensure food security, improve the ecological environment, and meet the needs of sustainable agricultural development. Based on the panel data of 30 provinces in China from 1999 to 2018, the article uses the Super-SBM model to measure the AWUE. Moreover, the study uses the entropy method to establish the urbanization evaluation index system from the dimensions of population, land, economy, measures the comprehensive level of urbanization development, and further constructs a dynamic spatial econometric model. We use the unconditional maximum likelihood estimation method to evaluate the impact of urbanization development on AWUE and its heterogeneity. The findings reveal that the AWUE considering undesired outcomes has generally shown a steady improvement, but there is ample space for resource conservation and environmental protection, and there are noticeable differences among regions. The decomposition of spatial effects shows that urbanization development in each region has a short-term positive effect on AWUE in the region and neighboring regions, and a long-term effect exists only in the western region. The impact of urbanization in different dimensions has been found that both land urbanization and economic urbanization contribute to the improvement of AWUE, while population urbanization helps to improve AWUE by improving the awareness level of the farmers.

The size of household CO2 emissions (HCE) has drawn increasing attention recently. Due to differences in geographical location, traditional models do not provide a valid basis or countermeasures for CO2 emissions reduction in different provinces, leading to biased estimation. This paper uses a geographical weighted regression (GWR) model to examine the spatial effect of urbanization, energy intensity, energy structure and income on HCE. The results indicate an obvious spatial effect on carbon emissions in the provinces. The impact of urbanization on household CO2 emissions presented an increasing trend from the southeastern coast to the northwest from 2000 to 2015. Energy intensity had a remarkably positive effect on HCE in 2000 and 2015, although it had a negative effect in all provinces in 2005 and in some provinces in 2010. The elasticity coefficient of energy structure on HCE was negative in most provinces in all four years, indicating that more use of natural gas and electricity decreased HCE. Income was a powerful explanatory factor for growth in household CO2 carbon emissions in all years. The effect of income on HCE was positive and showed an increasing tendency year by year.

Land recuperation is an important institutional guarantee for green agricultural development and an important measure to promote rural revitalization. Asset specificity is a crucial factor that affects farmers’ subsequent willingness to participate in land recuperation. Based on the perspective of farmer differentiation, this study uses survey data of 605 farmers in four counties of Gansu Province and employs the entropy method and the double-hurdle model to measure asset specificity and how it affects the subsequent willingness of different types of farmers to participate in land recuperation. The results show that: (1) farmers’ willingness to participate in land recuperation increases with the degree of their part-time occupations; (2) geographical location specificity has a significant negative effect on farmers’ intention and degree of subsequent land recuperations, and the impacts on non-farmers and II part-time farmers are significantly smaller than that on pure farmers and part-time farmers; (3) physical asset specificity has the most negligible influence on farmers’ subsequent willingness to participate; (4) human capital specificity has a significant negative impact on the intention and degree of land recuperation by farmers, and the effect is more significant for pure farmers than non-farmers; (5) factors such as land recuperation compensation satisfaction, land recuperation policy trust, social connection, and off-farm employment willingness promote the subsequent land recuperation willingness and degree of land recuperation of farmers, while the cultivated land area reduces the subsequent degree of participation in land recuperation.

Studying the influencing factors of the drag effect of water resources and its temporal−spatial variation can help governments to solve the problem of water resource constraints on the economic growth of different regions. Based on Romer’s hypothesis, this paper uses panel data to empirically analyze the drag effect of water resources in China’s 31 provinces from 1987 to 2017. The research shows that: (1) Water resources have certain constraints on the economic growth of each region. Regional economic growth has declined by 0.23% (eastern), 0.07% (western), 0.43% (central) and 0.09% (northeastern) annually. (2) In provinces with rapid labor growth, water resources have a greater impact on economic growth. In provinces with low labor growth rates, the drag effect of water resources on economic growth is affected by the capital stock of the region. (3) Through the analysis of the water drag effect in different time periods, this paper finds that in some periods, the government’s mobilization of water resources for the economic growth in some regions will not only promote the transfer of labor between regions, but also cause changes in the regional water resources. According to the results of this paper, the following conclusions can be drawn: (1) It is necessary to vigorously develop water-saving agriculture, improve technical efficiency, and reduce the strong dependence of economic growth on water resources in the provinces which has a strong water drag effect on economic growth; (2) Provinces with moderate water resource constraints should take the lead in deploying strategic emerging industries, and accelerate the development of the tertiary industry; (3) Provinces with weakly water resource restrictions can promote the development of capital-based industries. Not only can the development of the economy be rational, but it can also reduce the economy’s dependence on resources, thereby achieving the sustainable use of water resources and sustainable economic growth.

Agricultural non-point source pollution (ANSP) has become one of the main sources of pollution in water source areas. An effective solution to this problem is the use of ecological compensation to encourage rural households to adopt agricultural pollution control measures. This study aims to answer two questions: How much compensation should be given to encourage rural households in water source areas to participate in ANSP control? What factors will influence their participation? In this study, paddy rice planting in water source area has been used as an example aiming to answer these questions. This study used the random parameter logit (RPL) model with survey data from 632 rural households in the Qinba water source area to empirically analyze rural households’ willingness to accept compensation for ANSP control and the influencing factors of this willingness. From this information, the compensation standards for ANSP control in a water source area were calculated. The results show that (1) compensation had a significant incentive effect on rural households’ willingness to control ANSP. The marginal compensation standard for reducing the use of fertilizer and pesticide was $3.40/ha and $2.00/ha, respectively. The compensation standard for not applying chemical fertilizer and pesticide at all was $540.23/ha. (2) There was heterogeneity in rural households’ preference for ANSP control compensation policies. Rural households characterized by younger residents, higher family income, higher perception of the ecological benefits, and higher perception of government policy were more willing to participate in the compensation policy. It is suggested that rural households showed a strong preference for ANSP control policies by considering both of their economic losses and ecological benefits. Our study contributes to the literature by enriching the evaluation method in providing references for the compensation of ANSP control policies

This paper assesses residential environment induced preference heterogeneity regarding ecosystem services improvements of a river basin by comparing urban and rural residents’ welfare estimates. In a choice experiment, the ecological improvements are described in terms of several observable ecological indicators set in an experimental design. Given the fact that economic and environmental conditions differ for urban and rural residents in China, the utility they derive from ecological restoration is hypothesized to differ. The urban and rural residents’ survey data were modeled separately using mixed logit models. The results reveal that water quality and water quantity, measured by unit of level improvement and percentage improvement, respectively, hold the highest marginal utility values in all respondents’ models. Urban and rural residents have the same preference regarding expanding soil erosion control areas and landscape improvement. However, they have statistically significant different utility for water quality, water quantity, forest coverage, ecotourism improvements, and reducing soil erosion intensity. Generally, urban residents express a higher implicit price for most of the ecological indicators. The findings imply that policy makers should take existing preference heterogeneity into account in designing ecosystem payment schemes and allocating resources.

For developing countries, an adequate domestic water supply is conventionally assessed based on the proportion of communities that are covered by improved water sources. However, it is difficult to evaluate water poverty accurately, as it is multidimensional. For this reason, this paper used the Water Poverty Index (WPI) to measure water poverty in rural communities of arid areas in China. This study also uses the Least Square Error (LSE) model to analyze the influencing factors of water poverty. Based on the WPI and LSE, the results showed that the rural communities of Sheshu, Fanyao, Dongcao, Qiaodi, and Gouershang (listed in order of priority of need for intervention) are in a water poverty situation. In rural communities with high water poverty, the suggested priority order for the study was environment, capacity, use, resources, and access, with the environmental factor needing to be improved. The results are useful for prioritizing areas and identifying the extent of the need for policy intervention on different scales. The research findings are intended to complement the evaluation of water poverty and to provide a strategy for regional water resources management to relieve water poverty.
