Background/Aim. To date, most of the scientific attention has been aimed at the morphometric analysis of the nephrogenic zone (NZ) of the fetal renal cortex, while the quantification and analysis of the maturation zone (MZ) and other indicators of renal maturity were missing. The aim of the study was to examine the characteristics of fetal kidney cortex maturation, as well as to propose the development of a new cortical maturity index (CMI). Methods. The study included 42 paraffin molds of the fetal kidney, divided into three groups according to gestational age (GA). After hematoxylin and eosin staining, tissue sections were analyzed through the following parameters: the thickness of the NZ and MZ, the renal corpuscles area (RCa) and the glomerular capillary tuft area (GCTa), and the maturation stages of the glomeruli. In addition, a new parameter, CMI, was formed as a ratio of NZ and MZ thickness. The collected data were statistically processed. Results. Changes in NZ and MZ thickness were statistically significant, and they correlated with GA. A value of CMI higher than 0.2 was recorded in the kidney samples of fetuses younger than the 20th gestational week (GW), while a value lower than 0.1 was recorded in the samples older than the 30th GW. With an increase in GA in all zones of the renal cortex, RCa and GCTa decreased. A statistically significant reduction of GCTa was observed in the oldest group in the juxtamedullary and intermediate zones of the cortex (p < 0.01). Glomeruli located in the deeper parts of the cortex were more mature than the superficial ones. Conclusion. The measured parameters can serve as a starting point for future studies that would analyze the histomorphological characteristics of the fetal kidney cortex. In the absence of clinical data, a newly formed parameter CMI can represent assistance with the determination of GA, as it significantly correlates with GA (p < 0.01).

The paper deals with the research of the presence and roles of women in the creation of series in socialist Yugoslavia during the sixties and seventies of the 20th century. Besides the primary objective of identification, this study aims to identify specific patterns in work allocation, highlight significant female contributors, and underscore their contributions to the development of television series, thereby shedding light on values, cultural patterns, and societal practices. Also, Cultural Identity Theory was implemented to provide a valuable framework for understanding how women’s contributions behind the scenes in Yugoslav television series production during the 1960s and 1970s are intricately linked to the construction of cultural identity. Further, the paper analyzes the list of employees involved in the creation of 17 Yugoslav series created during the 1960s and 1970s. All information about the employees was found on the site IMDB.com. With the help of a specially constructed code list, they were listed and classified, and descriptive and comparative statistics of data analysis were carried out in the SPSS 24.0 program. In the second part of the analysis, the most significant women in this process were singled out and presented. The results clearly demonstrate that women held significantly fewer positions than men, with a distinct division of labor based on gender roles. Men are more often those who relate to the main positions in making series, and women to logistics and aesthetics of the characters. Also, the conclusion of the research is that, in order to be successful, a woman in that period often had to be supported by a man, but that, when she was recognized, she played a significant role in many projects, thus participating in defining the cultural heritage of an entire era.

Online commenting has, at first glance, enabled the revival of the public sphere in which practically every man has the opportunity to have his voice heard. However, practical problems and specifics of this type of public communication indicate that commenting online is significantly different from the initially predominant idealistic assumptions. The aim of this paper is to investigate how and to what extent Internet users in Serbia are involved in online commenting, why and how they see the impact and significance of this phenomenon as a whole. The research was conducted by means of a questionnaire completed by 225 respondents. The results were analyzed by descriptive and comparative statistical methods and indicate that less than a half of the citizens do comment online, that most of them do not think it is possible to change other people's opinions in this manner, but they still consider it important and influential. Certain differences have also been observed in relation to the respondents' age and level of education.

Background/Aim. Mechanisms responsible for the beneficial effects of aerobic exercise training on cardiovascular function are well known, but detraining effects on myocardial parameters have not been adequately elucidated. Therefore, the study aimed to determine the occurrence and speed of cardiac adaptation reversibility after the cessation of aerobic exercise and to reveal gender differences in achieved effects of training/detraining. Methods. Fe-male and male Wistar albino rats were divided into the following groups: control, trained, and two detrained groups. Hearts were perfused according to the Langendorff technique and the following cardiodynamic parameters were determined: the maximum and minimum rate of pressure development in the left ventricle (dp/dt max and dp/dt min, respectively), systolic and diastolic left ventricular pressure (SLVP and DLVP, respectively), heart rate (HR), and coronary flow. Results. Training significantly reduced values of dp/dt max, dp/dt min, and SLVP in males and females, and coronary flow in males. Detraining caused a reversion of those changes, which was gender-specific. In females, levels of SLVP were higher after 4 weeks of detraining compred to training, and after 2 weeks of detraining. Values of SLVP were lower in both detraining periods compared to training in males. Males had higher coronary flow after 2 weeks of detraining. Simultaneously, coronary flow was reduced in the 4th week of detraining in females. Conclusion. By using a model of the isolated rat heart, the present study confirmed the existence of training-induced changes in cardiac function. Cessation of training was followed by the loss of those adaptations, faster in males than females.

In post-global society the media space intended for world news is more limited, therefore journalists are forced daily to perform a selection of relevant events, processes and personalities based on certain criteria. These criteria are closely related to the political, cultural, ideological, economic, religious, security and other features of the community to which media belong, and this can lead to the creation of different pictures of the world in different societies. The aim of paper is to determine whether there are differences in the manner of selection and presentation of world events in the online media between geographically, linguistically and culturally close nations - Serbia, Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina? The main hypothesis is that there are differences in the selection of subjects, the focus of attention, context and manner of presentation of foreign news in the online media in Serbia, Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The analysis was conducted on one week sample in three online media from Serbia (novosti. rs), Croatia (24sata.hr) and Bosnia and Herzegovina (nezavisne.com), using the statistical methods and comparative content analysis. The results confirm differences in the presentation of events influenced by political-ideological and political-historical and also religious differences among the countries, but also the results show that similarities exist, due to the dominant criteria of negativity and importance of elite nations.

Background/Aim. Amifostine (AMI) is a broad-spectrum cytoprotector which protects against variety of radio- and chemotherapy-related toxicities without decreasing their antitumor action. The aim of the study was to investigate the potential protective effects of AMI against acute cardiotoxic effects of doxorubicin (DOX) in male Wistar rats. Methods. AMI (300 mg/kg ip) was given 30 min before DOX (6 mg/kg and 10mg/kg b.w., iv). The evaluation of DOXinduced cardiotoxic effects, as well as cardioprotective efficacy of AMI was performed 48 h after their administration by determining serum activities of enzymes known to be markers of cardiac damage (creatine kinase - CK, aspartate aminotransferase - AST, lactate dehydrogenase - LDH, and its isoenzyme α-hydroxybutirate dehydrogenase - α- HBDH), as well as the histopathological and ultrastructural analysis of the heart tissue. Results. AMI successfully prevented a significant increase in serum activity of CK, AST, LDH and α-HBDH in animals treated with DOX in the dose of 6 mg/kg (121.14 ± 18.37 vs 167.70 ± 44.24; 771.42 ± 161.99 vs 1057.00 ± 300.00; 3230.00 ± 1031.73 vs 4243.10 ± 904.06; 202.57 ± 42.46 vs 294.90 ± 80.20 UI/l, respectively), and ameliorated DOX-induced structural damage of the rat myocardium. Pretreatment with AMI in rats given 10 mg/kg DOX reduced the cardiac damage score (CDS) from 2.62 ± 0.51 to 1.62 ± 0.51, i.e. to the CDS value obtained with the lower dose of DOX (6 mg/kg). The ultrastructural analysis of the rat myocardium showed that AMI successfully protected the sarcolemma of cardiomyocytes and reduced mitochondria damage induced by DOX given in the dose of 6 mg/kg. Besides, capillaries were less morphologically changed and apoptosis of endothelial cells was extremely rare in AMI-protected animals. AMI itself did not cause any prominent changes in the examined parameters in comparison with the control rats. Conclusion. AMI provided a significant protection against DOX-induced acute cardiotoxic effects in rats. This finding implies its potential to be a successful cardioprotector in patients treated with DOX due to malignant diseases.

Background/Aim. According to the number of active smokers, Serbia occupies a high position in Europe, as well as worldwide. More than 47% of adults are smokers according to WHO data, and 33.6% according to the National Health Survey Serbia in 2006. Smoking physicians are setting a bad example to patients, they are uncritical to this habit, rarely ask patients whether they smoke and rarely advise them not to smoke. These facts contribute to the battle for reducing the number of medical workers who smoke, as well as the number of smokers among general population. The aim of the study was to determine the smoking behavior, knowledge and attitudes and cessation advice given to patients by healthcare professionals in Serbia. Methods. A stratified random cluster sample of 1,383 participants included all types of health institutions in Serbia excluding Kosovo. The self administrated questionnaire was used to collect data about smoking habits, knowledge, attitudes and cessation advice to patients given by health professionals in Serbia. Results. Out of 1,383 participants, 45.60% were smokers, of whom 34.13% were physicians and 51.87% nurses. There were 46.4% male and 45.4% female smokers. The differences in agreement with the statements related to the responsibilities of health care professionals and smoking policy are significant between the “ever” and “never” smokers, and also between physicians and nurses. Twenty-five percent of nurses and 22% of doctors claimed they had received formal training. However, only 35.7% of the healthcare professionals felt very prepared to counsel patients, while 52.7% felt somewhat prepared and 11.6% were not prepared at all. Conclusions. According to the result of this survey, there are needs for more aggressive nationwide non-smoking campaigns for physicians and medical students. Experiences from countries where physicians smoke less and more effectively carry out smoking cessation practices need to be shared with Serbian physicians in order to improve their smoking behavior and smoking cessation practices. Backgraund/Aim. Conventional cytomorphology of thyroid cell aspirates is limited in preoperative differential diagnosis of follicular adenomas (FA) and hyperplastic adenomatoid nodular goiters from well differentiated thyroid follicular carcinoma (FTC) and follicular variant of thyroid papillary carcinoma (PTC). This is the reason of inaccurate presurgical differential diagnosis and in the same cases of inadequate operative managament. The aim of the study was to evaluate the role of quantitative estimation of thyreocite nuclear features (cariomorphometry) in thyroid aspirated smears in preoperative differential diagnosis of benign from malignant thyroid lesions. Methods. A total of 48 patients with thyroid nodular disease underwent fine needle aspiration biopsy for cytomorphology, cariomorphometric analysis of the aspirates, and histopathologic explorations conducted fully postoperatively. On the basis of cytomorphology classification the patients were divided into three groups: benign (B), n = 8; malignant (M), n = 15, and suspicious for malignancy (S), n = 25. Using a microscope connected to a computerized video system, mean nuclear area, the nuclear area coefficient of variation (NACV) and anisocariosis ratio were measured and calculated. Results. In all the 15 patients with cytologically malignant results the diagnosis of PTC was confirmed histopathologically. All cytologically benign lesions were confirmed histopathologically. Thyroid carcinoma was found in 15 out of 25 patients with suspicious lesions. The highest mean values of nuclear area were in the PCT (90.74 ± 26.71 μm2), and were significantly different from all other groups (p < 0.001). The mean nuclear area in FTC was 69.20 ± 27.31 μm2 and was significantly higher than in the benign adenomatous group (p < 0.01). There was no significant difference in mean nuclear area between FTC and FA, but there was a significant difference in NACV between these two groups (FTC: 39.46 % vs FA: 23.42%, p < 0.001). In 27 out of 30 patients with thyroid carcinoma higher values of NACV than 18% were found. Conclusion. Preoperatively cariomorphometry is a useful method in differential diagnosis of thyroid carcinoma from benign lesions, as a complementary method to convencional cytodiagnostics. The NACV showed highest sensitivity as a parameter of malignant thyroid cell transformation.

Background/Aim. Soft tissue defects in the distal third of the lower leg are persistent and constitute a major problem in the reconstructive surgery. This study presents an analysis of the anatomical vascularization filed of ascending branch of the peroneal artery ramus perforans (PARS). The aim of this study was to assess reliability of the distal flap on the antero-lateral aspect of a lower leg distal third. Methods. Direct gentiana violet injection into the interosseal perforator of ten fresh cadaveric lower legs with subsequent corrosion acrylic preparation was performed to reveal vascularization filed of the ascending branch of the PARP. Height, length, diameter and communication of perforating branch and its subsequent smaller ascending and descending branches were determined. The CAMIA software was used. Results. Our results show that the PARP is always present. Its origin from the peroneal artery is at the medial height of 66 mm when measured from the inferior border of the lateral malleolus. Medium length of ramus perforans is 51.7mm. After transition through the interosseous membrane, ramus perforans divides into ascending and descending branches. The diameter proximal to the level of bifurcation is 1.37 mm (variation 1.0-1.8 mm), and the diameter of the ascending branch distal to the level of bifurcation is 1 mm. Using CAMIA software, the medium length, width and area of the vascularization filed labeled with gentian violet were calculated to be 164 mm (variation 125-210 mm), 66 mm (57-77 mm), and 10,305 mm2 (6,385 mm2-14,341 mm2), respectively. Conclusion. Our results support the use of fasciocutaneous distal flap, vascularized by the ascending branch of the PARP for reconstruction of soft tissue defects in the distal third of the lower limb, malleolar regions and dorsum.

Background/Aim. Low birth weight (LBW) is a result of preterm birth or intrauterine growth retardation, and in both cases is the strongest single factor associated with perinatal and neonatal mortality. It is considered that socioeconomic factors, as well as mothers bad habits, play the most significant role in the development of LBW, which explains notable number of researches focused on this particular problem. The aim of this study was to characterize socioeconomic factors, as well as smoking habits of the mothers, and their connection with LBW. Methods. The questionnaire was carried out among mothers of 2 years old children (n = 956), born after 37 gestational weeks. The characteristics of mothers who had children with LBW, defined as < 2 500 g, (n = 50), were matched with the characteristics of mothers who had children ≥ 2 500 g, (n = 906). For defining risk factors, and protective factors as well, we used univariant and multivariant logistic modeles. Results. As significant risk factors for LBW in an univariant model we had education level of the mothers, smoking during pregnancy, smoking before pregnancy, the number of daily cigarettes, the number of cigarettes used during pregnancy, paternal earnings and socioeconomic factors. In a multivariant model the most significant factors were socioeconomic factors, education level of the mothers, paternal earnings and mothers smoking during pregnancy. Conclusion. Smoking during pregnancy and socioeconomic factors have great influence on LBW. Future studies should be carried out in different social groups, with the intention to define their influence on LBW and reproduction, as well. This should be the proper way of adequate health breeding planning for giving up smoking, the prevention of bad habits and melioration of mothers and children health, as the most vulnerable population.

Background/Aim. A study of morphological lesions in the liver of heroin addicts enables a precise overview of the type and degree of the liver damages caused by intravenous (iv) heroin abuse, additive effects of viral infections and alcohol consumption, as well as whether the expressiveness of these lesions depends on the duration of the time period of heroin application. The aim of the study was to investigate histopathological, ultrastructural and morphometric features of the liver of heroin addicts in forensic samples of the liver. Methods. The study involved the autopsy conducted on 40 bodies of iv heroin addicts and 10 control autopsies. The investigated group consisted of liver samples of 36 male subjects and 4 female subjects aged 35-40 years and the control group of 8 male and 2 female cadaveric bodies aged 15-35 years. The liver tissue samples were prepared for light microscopy. Sections of the tissue paraffin blocks 5 μ thick were stained using classical Hematoxylin and Eosin method (H&E), as well as PAS Van Gieson, Gomori, and Congo Red techniques. For investigation purposes of ultrastructural changes, liver tissue was fixed in glutaraldehyde and molded with epon. The analysis was performed using the method of transmission electron microscopy. Morphometric investigation of the liver sinusoidal macrophages was performed by using the M42 test system. Results. In the investigated group of iv heroin addicts, the liver autopsy samples showed degenerative vesicular and fat changes, chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis, sedimentation of pathologic protein amyloidosis, dysplastic changes, reduction in the amount of glycogen in hepatocytes, as well as the change in the number of Kupfer and endothelial cells. The established changes correlated with the duration of iv heroin abuse, whereas sinusoidal macrophages were activated in cases with active hepatitis, and no significant change in their number was found in hepatocytes with alcohol-related fatty changes. Conclusion. The study showed that the most present change in the hepatocytes of drug addicts was vesicular degeneration, and it is the only direct consequence of the effect of heroin. Other morphological changes were present due to viral infections and they correlated with the duration of narcotic abuse. The finding of dysplastic changes in this susceptible population of young people is particularly significant. The forensic significance of the established changes in the liver tissue is in the possibility of their practical application for determination of the immediate cause of death of iv heroin addicts, as well as the differential diagnosis of not only heroin, but also alcohol, sedative and other substances abuse, and all that on the basis of morphological damages of the liver.

Background. Contact hypersensitivity (CHS) is a local inflammatory response of the skin following challenge of hapten-sensitized animals. It is the consequence of cell infiltration of derm and the release of inflammation mediators, among which Tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) is one of the most important factors. The intensity of the inflammation could be quantified by ear swelling which is the classical manifestation of the reaction. This study was testing the working hypothesis that levels of TNF-α in skin organ culture medium should correlate with the intensity of CHS reaction measured in vivo by ear swelling assay, and with the density of dermal infiltrate in ear skin samples. In order to test the working hypothesis, the intensity of inflammatory reaction following challenge was evaluated by classical measurements of ear swelling, by the determination of TNF-α levels in culture fluids of ear skin following epicutaneous application of dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB) into the ears of sensitized animals. Methods. Animal model of CHS reaction to DNCB in Albino Oxford rats was used as described. Ear swelling was quantified in percentage terms as the difference in thickness between the challenged and nontreated ears of the same animal. Dermal infiltrate density in histopathologically analyzed samples of ear skin was evaluated by computer-assisted image analysis. Ear skin samples were cultured in standard medium for 24 h, and TNF-α concentration in the conditioned medium was subsequently determined with ELISA test. Results. Dose-dependent increase in the density of the dermal infiltrate and in TNF-α in CM were noted following the application of 0.65%, 1.3% and 2.6% of DNCB to the ears of previously sensitized rats. Karcinomi koze su najčešće dijagnostikovane maligne bolesti. Koza je izložena uticaju brojnih faktora spoljašnje sredine koji izazivaju genetska oštećenja i indukuju neoplazijsku transformaciju ćelija. Najčešći uzrok za njihovu pojavu je učestalo i prekomerno izlaganje suncu, pri čemu UV zraci dovode do kumulativnog oštećenja kože. Cilj rada je prikazivanje učestalosti malignih bolesti kože kod stanovnika opštine Knjaževac u predhodne tri godine, od 2015. do 2017. godine. Materijal i metodi rada: Istraživanje je sprovedeno u Zdravstvenom centru Knjaževac, a podaci su dobijeni retrospektivnom analizom evidencije protokola Dermatovenerološke ambulante i knjige patohistoloških nalaza sa odeljenja Opšte hirurgije. Maligne bolesti su klasifikovane prema patohistološkoj građi, a pacijenti prema polu i starosnoj dobi. Rezultati su prikazani tabelarno. Rezultati: Ukupan broj evidentiranih pacijenata u trogodišnjem periodu je 195. Odnos obolelih žena i muškaraca je 100 : 95. Primetan je rast broja obolelih po godinama. U 2015. godini registrovano je 40, a u 2017. godini 90 obolelih. Sa primenom dermoskopije kao dijagnostičke procedure, povećan je i broj novootkrivenih malignih bolesti kože. Najveći broj obolelih je sa bazocelularnim karcinom, 139. Skvamocelularni karcinom je dijagnostikovan kod 27 obolelih, a maligni melanom kod 19 pacijenata. Od melanoma je najčešći nodularni tip i dijagnostikovan je kod 9 pacijenata. Kod 7 pacijenata su patohistološki ponu đene metastatske promene na koži, i to tri metastatska melanoma, a kod ostalih metastaze karcinoma drugih lokalizacija. Najveći broj obolelih je u starosnoj dobi od 71. do 80-te godine. Najmlađi pacijent je imao 30 godina i kod njega je dijagnostikovan bazocelularni karcinom, a najmlađi pacijent sa malignim melanomom je imao 49 godina u momenni postavljanja dijagnoze. Zaključak: Moramo prihvatiti činjenicu da se intenzitet UV zračenja povećao i da će tako biti i u buduće. Takođe je sve učestalija pojava malignih bolesti kože kod mlađe populacije. Zbog svega ovoga neophodna je edukacija stanovništva o štetnosti preteranom izlaganju suncu i potrebi sprovođenja svih mera zaštite od UV zračenja. Takođe je potrebno organizovanje preventivnih skrining pregleda kože, radi što ranijeg postavljanja dijagnoze i adekvatnog lečenja. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ameloblastoma is a rare tumor of the jaw arising from odontogenic epithelium. There are sparse reports in the literature concerning cytologic features of this tumor. This paper presents two cases of ameloblastoma diagnosed by imprint cytology and confirmed histopathologically. The imprints were hypercellular, with single cells and the groups of basaloid and polygonal squamous cells with huge vacuoles in cytoplasm. Stellate and fusiform cells were found in the background of the preparation. These morphologic parameters were sufficient for the cytologic diagnosis of ameloblastoma.

Background: Despite the increased use of mechanical thrombectomy (MT) in recent years, there remains a lack of research on in-hospital mortality rates following the procedure, the primary factors influencing these rates, and the potential for predicting them. This study aimed to utilize interpretable machine learning (ML) to help clarify these uncertainties., Methods: This retrospective study involved patients with anterior circulation large vessel occlusion (LVO)-related ischemic stroke who underwent MT. The patient division was made into two groups: (I) the in-hospital death group, referred to as miserable outcome, and (II) the in-hospital survival group, or favorable outcome. Python 3.10.9 was utilized to develop the machine learning models, which consisted of two types based on input features: (I) the Pre-MT model, incorporating baseline features, and (II) the Post-MT model, which included both baseline and MT-related features. After a feature selection process, the models were trained, internally evaluated, and tested, after which interpretation frameworks were employed to clarify the decision-making processes., Results: This study included 602 patients with a median age of 76 years (interquartile range (IQR) 65-83), out of which 54% ( n = 328) were female, and 22% ( n = 133) had miserable outcomes. Selected baseline features were age, baseline National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) value, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), international normalized ratio (INR), the type of the affected vessel ('Vessel type'), peripheral arterial disease (PAD), baseline glycemia, and premorbid modified Rankin scale (pre-mRS). The highest odds ratio of 4.504 was observed with the presence of peripheral arterial disease (95% confidence interval (CI), 2.120-9.569). The Pre-MT model achieved an area under the curve (AUC) value of around 79% utilizing these features, and the interpretable framework discovered the baseline NIHSS value as the most influential factor. In the second data set, selected features were the same, excluding pre-mRS and including puncture-to-procedure-end time (PET) and onset-to-puncture time (OPT). The AUC value of the Post-MT model was around 84% with age being the highest-ranked feature., Conclusions: This study demonstrates the moderate to strong effectiveness of interpretable machine learning models in predicting in-hospital mortality following mechanical thrombectomy for ischemic stroke, with AUCs of 0.792 for the Pre-MT model and 0.837 for the Post-MT model. Key predictors included patient age, baseline NIHSS, NLR, INR, occluded vessel type, PAD, baseline glycemia, pre-mRS, PET, and OPT. These findings provide valuable insights into risk factors and could improve post-procedural patient management.

Background: as a relatively high number of ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients develop major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) following percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), our aim was to determine the significance, and possible predictive value of QRS complex width and ST-segment elevation., Methods: our patient sample included 200 PCI-treated STEMI patients, which were divided into two groups based on the following duration of symptoms: (I) less than 6 h, and (II) 6 to 12 h. For every patient, an ECG was performed at six different time points, patients were followed for up to six years for the occurrence of MACE., Results: the mean age was 60.6 ± 11.39 years, and 142 (71%) were male. The 6-12 h group had significantly wider QRS complex, higher ST-segment elevation, lower prevalence of ST-segment resolution as well as MACE prevalence ( p < 0.05). ECG parameters, QRS width, and magnitude of ST-segment elevation were proved to be independent significant predictors of MACE in all measured time points ( p < 0.05). Even after controlling for biomarkers of myocardial injury, these ECG parameters remained statistically significant predictors of MACE ( p < 0.05)., Conclusion: our study highlights that wider QRS complex and a more pronounced ST-segment elevation are associated with longer total ischemic time and higher risk of long-term MACE.

Palm weevils, Rhynchophorus spp., are destructive pests of native, ornamental, and agricultural palm species. Of the 10 recognized species, two of the most injurious species, Rhynchophorus ferrugineus and Rhynchophorus palmarum , both of which have spread beyond their native range, are the best studied. Due to its greater global spread and damage to edible date industries in the Middle East, R. ferrugineus has received more research interest. Integrated pest management programs utilize traps baited with aggregation pheromone, removal of infested palms, and insecticides. However, weevil control is costly, development of resistance to insecticides is problematic, and program efficacy can be impaired because early detection of infestations is difficult. The genome of R. ferrugineus has been sequenced, and omics research is providing insight into pheromone communication and changes in volatile and metabolism profiles of weevil-infested palms. We outline how such developments could lead to new control strategies and early detection tools.

North American bean thrips, Caliothrips fasciatus , native to California U.S., has been detected inside the navels of navel oranges exported from California for more than 120 years. Despite this long history of accidental movement into new areas, this thrips has failed to establish populations outside of its native range. The cold accumulation hypothesis postulates that increasing levels of cold stress experienced by thrips overwintering inside navels is compounded when harvested fruit is shipped under cold storage conditions. Consequently, the fitness of surviving thrips is compromised, which greatly diminishes invasion potential. At the time this study was conducted, the effects of temperature on C. fasciatus fitness were unknown. To address this shortcoming, the effects of nine fluctuating temperatures that averaged 8, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 32, 35, and 37 °C over a 24 h period on the developmental and reproductive biology of C. fasciatus were evaluated. One linear and five nonlinear regression functions were fit to egg-to-adult development rate data for parent and offspring thrips to characterize thermal performance curves. Estimates of minimum, optimal, and maximum temperature thresholds for development were in the ranges of -4.37-6.52 °C (i.e., T ), 31.19-32.52 °C (i.e., min ), and 35.07-37.98 °C (i.e., T opt ), and 35.07-37.98 °C (i.e., T max ), respectively. Degree day accumulation to complete development, estimated from linear regression, ranged 370.37-384.61. Average development times for eggs, first and second instar larvae, propupae, pupae, and adult longevity, and mean lifetime fecundity of females were significantly affected by temperature. These biological responses to temperature may provide insight into how this abiotic variable affects the invasion potential of C. fasciatus .

Heilipus lauri Boheman (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) is a specialist pest of avocado fruit and is considered an incursion risk for U.S. avocado producers. At the time work reported here was undertaken the flight capabilities of H. lauri were unknown. Consequently, proactive studies were undertaken to quantify aspects of this pest's flight capabilities to inform potential future control efforts. Flight mill studies were conducted in a quarantine laboratory to measure the dispersal capacity of H. lauri with respect to gender, mating status, and size on the single and repeat flight capabilities of weevils. Gender, mating status, and size did not significantly affect measured flight parameters. Average total distances flown and flight velocity, and mean maximum flight bout distances and durations significantly declined as weevil age increased and when weevils engaged in repeat flights. Survivorship rates were significantly reduced as the number of successive flights undertaken increased. The distribution of total average flight distances flown and total cumulative flight distances flown was platykurtic. Hypertension is one of the most prevalent and powerful contributors of cardiovascular diseases. Malignant hypertension is a relatively rare but extremely severe form of hypertension accompanied with heart, brain, and renal impairment. Resveratrol, a recently described grape-derived, polyphenolic antioxidant molecule, has been proposed as an effective agent in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. This study was designed to examine chronic resveratrol administration on blood pressure, oxidative stress, and inflammation, with special emphasis on cardiac structure and function in two models of experimental hypertension. The experiments were performed in spontaneously (SHRs) and malignantly hypertensive rats (MHRs). The chronic administration of resveratrol significantly decreased blood pressure in both spontaneously and malignant hypertensive animals. The resveratrol treatment ameliorated morphological changes in the heart tissue. The immunohistochemistry of the heart tissue after resveratrol treatment showed that both TGF-β and Bax were not present in the myocytes of SHRs and were present mainly in the myocytes of MHRs. Resveratrol suppressed lipid peroxidation and significantly improved oxidative status and release of NO. These results suggest that resveratrol prevents hypertrophic and apoptotic consequences induced by high blood pressure with more pronounced effects in malignant hypertension.

The life time flight capabilities of an invasive palm pest, Rhynchophorus palmarum , were assessed using flight mill assays under controlled conditions in the laboratory. A total of 101 weevils were used for experiments and subjected to repeat flight assays. A total of 17 flight trials were run, of which the first 14 provided useful data prior to weevil death. Male and female weevils exhibited a strong capacity for repeat long distance flights. Flight metrics of interest were not affected by weevil sex or mating status. Cumulative lifetime flight distances for male and female R. palmarum averaged ~268 km and ~220 km, respectively. A maximum lifetime cumulative flight distance of ~758 km and ~806 km was recorded for one male of unknown mating status and one unmated female weevil, respectively. Dispersal data for individual flights (i.e., trials 1 through 9, 10-14 combined) and all flight trial data (i.e., flights 1-14 combined) exhibited platykurtic distributions. The results presented here may have important implications for modeling the spread of this invasive pest and for the development of monitoring and management plans.

The efficacies of two trap types, bucket and Picusan traps, for capturing and retaining Rhynchophorus palmarum (L.), an invasive palm pest responsible for killing thousands of ornamental Canary Islands date palms (Phoenix canariensis Chabaud [Arecales: Arecaceae]) in San Diego County, CA, were compared. Digital video data were analyzed to determine how R. palmarum behavior toward each trap type affected capture and retention rates. Videography was conducted 24 h/d, 7 d/wk, for more than 7 mo resulting in 20,211 h of digital data for analysis. Weevil attraction to traps was observed only during daylight hours and no patterns in diel activity were found. Neither trap type tested captured 100% of weevils attracted to traps. Bucket traps suspended 1.5 m above the ground attracted 30% more weevils than ground deployed Picusan traps. Of those weevils attracted to bucket traps, 89% entered, 82% escaped, and 18% that entered traps were retained. Weevils that were not retained spent an average of 19 min 20 s entering and exiting entry holes and walking and flying around the bucket trap. By contrast, Picusan traps captured 89% of weevils that entered the trap. The time between weevils arriving (via walking or flight) on the sides of the Picusan trap and retention in the trap ranged between 90 and 376 s. Rhynchophorus palmarum (L.) is an invasive pest responsible for killing thousands of ornamental Canary Islands date palms (Phoenix canariensis Chabaud) in San Diego County, CA. Two field experiments were conducted to compare the attractiveness of six different baits and two trap types. The tested baits were dates + water; dates + water + Saccharomyces cerevisiae; dates + water + S. bayanus; dates + water + S. pastorianus; 15% sugarcane molasses water solution mixed with 3% paraffinic oil, and a no bait control treatment. The two traps tested were white bucket traps (hanging 1.5 m above the ground and set on the ground) and black cone shaped Picusan traps (set on ground only). All traps were loaded with commercially available R. palmarum aggregation pheromone and the synergist ethyl acetate. Differences in weevil capture rates were observed across bait and trap types. Weevil captures were almost five times greater in Picusan traps compared to bucket traps that were hanging or placed on the ground. Adding dates and water alone or combined with S. cerevisiae to traps increased weevil captures compared to other baits and controls. Trap and bait types affected bycatch of nontarget arthropod species. In general, spiders, earwigs, and carabid beetles were most commonly recovered from Picusan traps, regardless of bait type. Scarab beetles, moths, and flies were found more frequently in bucket traps baited with molasses or dates mixed with S. bayanus. The palm weevil, Rhynchophorus palmarum (L.), was first recorded in San Diego County, CA in 2011 and breeding populations were recovered from infested Canary Islands date palms, Phoenix canariensis, in San Ysidro, San Diego County, in 2015. This palm pest presents a significant threat to California's edible date industry as Phoenix dactylifera is a recorded host for this weevil. The flight capabilities of R. palmarum are unknown which limits understanding of rates of natural dispersal. In response to this knowledge deficit, 24-h flight mill trials were conducted with field-collected male and female weevils. A total of 87 weevils (49 females and 38 males) were used in experiments, ~6% failed to fly >1 km in 24 h and were excluded from analyses. Of those 82 weevils flying >1 km in 24 h, the average distance flown by males and females was ~41 and ~53 km, respectively. Approximately 10% of females flew >100 km in 24 h, with two (~4%) females flying >140 km. The maximum recorded distance flown by a male weevil was 95 km. Flight activity was predominantly diurnal and flying weevils exhibited an average weight loss of ~18% while non-flying control weevils lost ~13% body weight in 24 h. The combined flight distances for male and female weevils exhibited a heavy-tailed platykurtic distribution. We present a synthetic review and expert consultation that assesses the actual risks posed by arthropod pests in four major crops, identifies targets for integrated pest management (IPM) in terms of cultivated land needing pest control and gauges the implementation "readiness" of non-chemical alternatives. Our assessment focuses on the world's primary target pests for neonicotinoid-based management: western corn rootworm (WCR, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera) in maize; wireworms (Agriotes spp.) in maize and winter wheat; bird cherry-oat aphid (Rhopalosiphum padi) in winter wheat; brown planthopper (BPH, Nilaparvata lugens) in rice; cotton aphid (Aphis gossypii) and silver-leaf whitefly (SLW, Bemisia tabaci) in cotton. First, we queried scientific literature databases and consulted experts from different countries in Europe, North America, and Asia about available IPM tools for each crop-pest system. Next, using an online survey, we quantitatively assessed the economic relevance of target pests by compiling country-level records of crop damage, yield impacts, extent of insecticide usage, and "readiness" status of various pest management alternatives (i.e., research, plot-scale validation, grower-uptake). Biological control received considerable scientific attention, while agronomic strategies (e.g., crop rotation), insurance schemes, decision support systems (DSS), and innovative pesticide application modes were listed as key alternatives. Our study identifies opportunities to advance applied research, IPM technology validation, and grower education to halt or drastically reduce our over-reliance on systemic insecticides globally.

The effects of six average daily temperatures, 15, 20, 25, 30, 32, and 35°C, that were either constant or fluctuating over 24 h on development times of California-sourced Diaphorina citri Kuwayama nymphs were examined. Thermal performance curves for immature stages of D. citri were characterized using one linear and six nonlinear models (i.e., Ratkowsky, Lobry-Rosso-Flandrois, Lactin-2, Brière-2, Beta, and Performance-2). Daily thermal fluctuations had significant effects on development times of D. citri nymphs, which differed across experimental temperatures. Diaphorina citri nymphs reared at constant temperatures completed development faster than those reared under fluctuating profiles with equivalent temperature means. Linear model estimates of degree-days required for completion of cumulative development of D. citri were 25% lower for constant temperatures when compared with fluctuating temperature regimens. Nonlinear model estimations of optimum developmental temperature and upper theoretical temperature bounds for development were similar for individuals reared under constant and fluctuating temperatures. Nevertheless, the estimated values of lower theoretical temperature limits above which development occurred were lower under fluctuating than constant temperatures. A meta-analysis of published D. citri temperature-dependent development literature, synthesizing datasets of five globally distributed populations (Brazil, California, China, Florida, and Japan) reared under different constant temperatures on six different host plants (i.e., Citrus limonia, C. sinensis cv Natal, C. sinensis cv. Pêra, C. reticulata, Fortunella margarita, and Murraya paniculata), together with the results of this study (C. volkameriana), revealed convergence in estimates of developmental parameters. This study examined the effects of seven constant and fluctuating temperature profiles with corresponding averages of 12 to 38°C on the life history of the Punjab, Pakistan-sourced Tamarixia radiata (Waterston) released in California for biological control of Diaphorina citri Kuwayama. One linear and seven nonlinear regression functions were fit to egg-to-adult development rate data to characterize thermal performance curves. Temperature fluctuations significantly affected both development and longevity of T. radiata. Estimates of degree-days predicted by the linear model were 30% higher for the fluctuating regime than the constant regime. Nonlinear model estimations of theoretical minimum and maximum developmental thresholds were lower for the fluctuating regime when compared to the constant regime. These predictions align with experimental observations. Parasitoids reared under fluctuating profiles at low average temperatures developed faster (15°C) and survived longer (15-20°C) when compared to those reared under constant regimes with corresponding means. In contrast, high average fluctuating temperatures produced parasitoids with an extended developmental period (35°C) and reduced longevity (30-35°C). A meta-analysis of published T. radiata development datasets, together with the results of this study, indicated convergence in degree-days and theoretical minimum developmental thresholds among geographically distinct parasitoid populations. These findings demonstrate the significant effects of temperature on T. radiata life history and have important implications for optimization of mass-rearing and release efforts, improvement of predictions from climate modeling, and comparison of T. radiata population performance across climatic gradients and geographic regions., (© The Author(s) 2019. The effects of fluctuating and constant temperatures on the development and longevity of Diaphorencyrtus aligarhensis (Shafee, Alam, and Argarwal) (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae), a parasitoid sourced from Pakistan and released in California for the classical biological control of Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Liviidae), were examined. The influence of six fluctuating temperatures that averaged 15, 20, 25, 30, 32, and 35°C, over 24 h on the development times and longevity of male and female D. aligarhensis were quantified and compared to six constant temperatures set at the same average temperatures. The development rates of immature stages of D. aligarhensis as a function of temperature were modeled using one linear and four nonlinear models. Fluctuating temperatures had significant effects on parasitoid development times and longevity which differed across experimental temperatures. Degree-days required for completion of cumulative development of D. aligarhensis were significantly different being 21% lower under fluctuating temperature regimens when compared with constant temperatures. The lower temperature threshold estimates above which development occurred were estimated to be lower under constant than fluctuating temperatures. The estimated values of upper and optimum temperature limits were similar for individuals reared under constant and fluctuating temperatures. Diaphorencyrtus aligarhensis lived longer at constant intermediate temperatures and for shorter times at constant lower temperature extremes when compared with their fluctuating temperature counterparts. Daily thermal fluctuations significantly influenced life history parameters of D. aligarhensis and should be considered when assessing likelihoods of establishment and impacts of this parasitoid on D. citri across diverse citrus-growing climates., (© The Author(s) 2019. Across many ecosystems, increases in species biodiversity generally results in greater resource acquisition by consumers. Few studies examining the impacts of consumer diversity on resource capture have focused on terrestrial herbivores, however, especially taxa that feed belowground. Here we conducted field mesocosm experiments to examine the effects of variation in species richness and composition within a community of wireworm herbivores on wheat plant productivity. Our experiments involved wireworm communities consisting of between one and three species, with all possible combinations of species represented. We found that the presence of wireworms reduced plant biomass and seed viability, but wireworm species richness did not impact these plant metrics. Species identity effects were strong, as two species, Limonius californicus and Selatosomus pruininus, had significantly stronger impacts on plants compared to L. infuscatus. Communities with either of the two most impactful species consistently had the greatest impact on wheat plants. The effects of wireworms were thus strongly dependent on the particular species present rather than the overall diversity of the wireworm community. More broadly, our study supports the general finding that the identity of particular consumer species within communities often has greater impacts on ecosystem functioning than species richness.

Soil-dwelling insects are severe pests in many agroecosystems. These pests have cryptic life cycles, making sampling difficult and damage hard to anticipate. The management of soil insects is therefore often based on preventative insecticides applied at planting or cultural practices. Wireworms, the subterranean larvae of click beetles (Coleoptera: Elateridae), have re-emerged as problematic pests in cereal crops in the Pacific Northwestern United States. Here, we evaluated two management strategies for wireworms in long-term field experiments: 1) treating spring wheat seed with the neonicotinoid thiamethoxam and 2) replacing continuous spring wheat with a summer fallow and winter wheat rotation. Separate experiments were conducted for two wireworm species--Limonius californicus (Mannerheim) and Limonius infuscatus (Motschulsky). In the experiment with L. californicus, spring wheat yields and economic returns increased by 24-30% with neonicotinoid treatments. In contrast, in the experiment with L. infuscatus, spring wheat yields and economic returns did not increase with neonicotinoids despite an 80% reduction in wireworms. Thus, the usefulness of seed-applied neonicotinoids differed based on the wireworm species present. In experiments with both species, we detected significantly fewer wireworms with a no-till summer fallow and winter wheat rotation compared with continuous spring wheat. This suggests that switching from continuous spring wheat to a winter wheat and summer fallow rotation may aid in wireworm management. Unlabelled: BACKGRAUND/AIM: Conventional cytomorphology of thyroid cell aspirates is limited in preoperative differential diagnosis of follicular adenomas (FA) and hyperplastic adenomatoid nodular goiters from well differentiated thyroid follicular carcinoma (FTC) and follicular variant of thyroid papillary carcinoma (PTC). This is the reason of inaccurate presurgical differential diagnosis and in the same cases of inadequate operative managament. The aim of the study was to evaluate the role of quantitative estimation of thyreocite nuclear features (cariomorphometry) in thyroid aspirated smears in preoperative differential diagnosis of benign from malignant thyroid lesions., Methods: A total of 48 patients with thyroid nodular disease underwent fine needle aspiration biopsy for cytomorphology, cariomorphometric analysis of the aspirates, and histopathologic explorations conducted fully postoperatively. On the basis of cytomorphology classification the patients were divided into three groups: benign (B), n = 8; malignant (M), n = 15, and suspicious for malignancy (S), n = 25. Using a microscope connected to a computerized video system, mean nuclear area, the nuclear area coefficient of variation (NACV) and anisocariosis ratio were measured and calculated., Results: In all the 15 patients with cytologically malignant results the diagnosis of PTC was confirmed histopathologically. All cytologically benign lesions were confirmed histopathologically. Thyroid carcinoma was found in 15 out of 25 patients with suspicious lesions. The highest mean values of nuclear area were in the PCT (90.74 +/- 26.71 microm2), and were significantly different from all other groups (p < 0.001). The mean nuclear area in FTC was 69.20 +/- 27.31 microm2 and was significantly higher than in the benign adenomatous group (p < 0.01). There was no significant difference in mean nuclear area between FTC and FA, but there was a significant difference in NACV between these two groups (FTC: 39.46% vs FA: 23.42%,p < 0.001). In 27 out of 30 patients with thyroid carcinoma higher values of NACV than 18% were found., Conclusion: Preoperatively cariomorphometry is a useful method in differential diagnosis of thyroid carcinoma from benign lesions, as a complementary method to convencional cytodiagnostics. The NACV showed highest sensitivity as a parameter of malignant thyroid cell transformation.

Mechanical properties of the spinal cord tissue--biological basis for the development of the modality of the DREZ surgery lesioning technique Succesful treatment of the chronic neurogenic pain of spinal cord and cauda equina injury origin remains a significant management problem. The mechanism of this pain phenomenon has been shown to be related to neurochemical changes that lead to the state of hypereactivity of the second order dorsal horn neurons. The DREZ surgery (Dorsal Root Entry Zone lesion), designed to destroy anatomy structures involved in pain generating thus interrupting the neurogenic pain mechanism, as a causative procedure in treating this chronic pain, has been performed by using different technical modalities: Radiofrequency (RF) coagulation technic, Laser, Ultrasound and Microsurgical DREZotomy technic. The purpose of the study was to assess the possibility for the establishment of the lesioning technic based on the natural difference in the mechanical properties between the white and gray cord substance. We experimentally deteminated mechanical properties of the human cadaveric cord white versus gray tissue for the purpose of testing possibility of selective suction of the dorsal horn gray substance as a DREZ lesioning procedure. Based on the fact of the difference in tissue elasticity between white and gray cord substance we established a new and simple DREZ surgical lesioning technique that was tested on cadaver cord. For the purpose of testing and comparing the size and shape of the DREZ lesion axchieved the DREZ surgery has been performed on cadaver cord by employing selective dorsal horn suction as a lesioning method. After the procedure cadaver cord underwent histological fixation and analysis of the DREZ lesions achieved. Our result revealed that the white cord substance with longitudinal fiber structure had four time higher dynamical viscosity than gray substance of local neuronal network structure (150 PaS versus 37.5 PaS) that provided possibility for the safe and selective suction of the gray substance of the dorsal horn. Technic includes incision of the dorsolateral sulcus according to Sindous Microsurgical DREZotomy technic than suction under visual control of the dorsal horn gray matter using succer adopted from the lumbar puncture nidle. Operative experimental testing and hystological analysis confirmed expected size and shape of the DREZ lesion performed by dorsal horn suction as DREZ lesioning technique. The utility, selectivity and safety of this technic has been provided by the natural mechanical properties of the cord tissue itself. Application of the Dorsal horn suction as a DREZ lesioning in humans confirmed this technic as a safe and reliable DREZ lesioning method.

Alizarin red S, a commonly used organic dye in the histologic identification of calcium deposits, also forms colored reaction products with other metal ions, such as barium and lead, which are present in primer residue. The possibility was presented of using this histochemical technique in determination of firing distance based on the results in experimentally made close-range gunshot wounds (up to 1 m) by using several types of firearms.

Lupus nephritis (LN) is one of the most significant manifestations in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), although in some cases there is no direct correlation among clinical, serologic and histologic findings. Therefore, renal biopsy and histopathologic classification by the activity and chronicity assessment of LN are considered necessary before the initiation of the treatment. In this paper 311 renal biopsies in patients with LN were analyzed and classified according to the WHO Classification published in 1974. Renal biopsy specimens were routinely processed for standard analysis by light microscopy (LM), immunofluorescent (IF), and electron microscopy (EM). Biopsy findings were compared with the common clinical symptoms. It is important to recognize that histopathologic lesions in the analyzed tissue might precede the symptoms and clinical manifestations, and therefore are an important factor in the appropriate therapeutic approach. Histopathological assessment of the class of LN represents an important predictor in most patients because the lesions of LN class I and class II most often have no progression and consequently do not require an aggressive treatment. Diffuse proliferative glomerulonephritis (class IV) as a severe form of renal lesion requires the application of high doses of corticosteroids and cytotoxic medicaments. The established quantitive indexes have significant predictive value. Activity index (AI) evaluates the presence of fresh inflammatory and potentially reversible lesions and chronicity index (CI) evaluate the presence of irreversible glomerular lesions such as sclerosis, tubular atrophy, interstitial fibrosis, etc. High AI and low CI, particularly in the class IV of LN, suggest the necessity of an aggressive treatment of the inflammatory process aiming to preserve the renal function. High CI and low AI characterize irreversible sclerosing lesions, where an aggressive treatment is considered unnecessary. Our experience suggests the necessity of introducing the new morphologic elements into the activity and chronicity scoring system which would correlate better the clinical symptoms.
