Teachers were among the public servants at work in New York City on September 11, 2001. This study focuses on the feelings and actions of a representative group of elementary teachers in Queens, New York. As they became aware of the unfolding tragedy of the World Trade Center attacks, they demonstrated the essential qualities of public service, which include selflessness and placing others' needs above their own. On that day, teachers, and other public servants, such as police and firefighters, became for ordinary citizens the voice and face of the democratic state in a time of crisis. (Contains 9 tables.)

Immigration is a public issue that needs student exploration. This cross-disciplinary study brings awareness of diverse cultures by studying immigration through personal history in a multiethnic urban elementary school. Research suggests the importance of integrating assets students bring into the classroom in instruction. Changing pedagogies also emphasize the need for students to participate in community-based inquiries. The article presents a case study of certified elementary teachers participating in the New York City Teaching Fellows program to investigate the social studies teaching beliefs, practices, and constraints. A cohort of 63 teachers in the New York City Teaching Fellows Program completed a survey and they were asked a variety of questions related to their profession and their belief. Direct instruction and scripted lessons were used by many Teaching fellows.

In the 1920s and 1930s, Paul R. Hanna and Harold O. Rugg developed new textbooks that integrated social studies curriculum in the elementary grades for the first time. Each author's curriculum; Hanna's expanding environments framework and Rugg's recurring concepts with a focus on contemporary issues has significantly impacted today's elementary school social studies instruction, textbooks and standards. This study evaluates the quality of the Hanna and Rugg curriculum materials based on an assessment of clear content goals in support of each author's curriculum structure and categories that determine the strength of the concepts used to support the content goals. The study finds that each author meets his curriculum goal with instances of clear and vivid concept development. The authors' inclusions in their curriculums of fundamental concepts that underlie the social sciences are elements within social studies education that continue to be emulated today. The article presents a study which examines the comparison between indigenous and non-indigenous male offenders' drug abuse and offending in Australia. It indicates that indigenous Australians have higher levels of contact with the criminal justice system at an earlier age compared to their non-indigenous peers. It shows that indigenous offenders have higher levels of drug use and dependency on alcohol and cannabis than non-indigenous offenders. In terms of risk factors, indigenous men were younger and were less likely to have been employed due to lower levels of education. Further, it reveals that indigenous offenders are more likely to attribute their offending to alcohol compared to illegal drugs.

The article presents an analysis concerning the use of cocaine among individuals detained by police and interviewed for the Australian Institute of Criminology's (AIC) Drug Use Monitoring in Australia (DUMA) program. The analysis shows that the use of cocaine does not only occur in DUMA's sites in Sydney, New South Wales, but also in other areas. It shows that cocaine users are predominately multiple-drug users and are more likely to have had prior contact with the criminal justice system than non-cocaine users. Other information also include where does cocaine come from and how does it appear in the country, the number of people using the drug, and the characteristics of cocaine users.
