Military personnel on active duty are expected to continue constituting a valuable segment of the retail market for consumer goods despite plans of the governmentto trim the ranks within a five year period. This would mean cutting down by 500,000 the current 2 million personnel in the service. These men and women on active duty comprise a relatively affluent group with an average annual income of $35,470, with over 292,000 officers with annual earnings exceeding $65,000. What makes this market segment extremely attractive is that they like to spend their money. The trimming of the ranks is expected to come in large part from over 490 bases outside the US that are scheduled for closing. Although there isa view that reductions in personnel will result in a smaller market, others expect the return of overseas military personnel to generate increased retail sales.
