- Abstract
The article explores the connections between Jewish history and the Italian decolonization through the prism of the Libyan Jewry's mobility to Italy between 1948 and 1951 and between 1967 and 1970. At the same time, the analysis sheds light on how the attitude of the Italian autorities towards the Jews of Libya was moved by the hope of an Italian return to Libya in the immediate postwar period, and by the willingness to maintain sound political, commercial and cultural ties with its former colony after Libyan independence. The "MultiMind - The Multilingual Mind" project was funded by the European Union's Horizon2020 research and innovation programme and constitutes a European research and training network on multilingualism. Adopting a multidisciplinary perspective, it deals with a range of issues related to multilingualism, covering the social, cognitive, linguistic, neurobiological, and clinical levels. The project has been structured into several working packages, each devoted to a specific topic. Some of these sub-projects led to the production of a series of Policy Reports as a final product addressed to decision-makers and policy-makers. Each report summarizes the main elements of the analysis of previous knowledge and new knowledge achieved and validated through the activities of the project itself, and proposes some recommendations based on the results of the research. The Policy Reports reported here are specifically dedicated to the assessment and intervention in bilingual children with Language and Learning Disorders, to the support of language development and literacy in the different languages spoken, and to children and adults with a migration history learning an L2 in formal educational settings. - Abstract
In this paper, the author addresses the issue of relationship between the organ transplantation and the migratory experience. In the transplant practice the organs “migrate”, prolonging their own existence and at the same time ensuring life to the recipient. The experience of organ transplantation shocks not only the body, but also the sense of Self, and the integration process is very complicated, because the hospitality is inseparable from the intrusion. The alienating experience of transplantation reveals the foreign in our own bodies. The new organ, in fact, is an intensily ambiguous object, that evokes the Freudian concept of Unheimlich. In this contribution the author tries to identify some analytical paths that could favour the psychosomatic integration of transplanted organs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pushed by southern winds, many Lepidoptera can fly from the sub-Saharan region to Sicily or Calabria in a short time. Thanks to a long-term monitoring program, we found for the first time in Italy a migrating specimen of Condica capensis (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). This finding is likely linked to the strong winds blowing from North Africa just before the collection of the specimen. Condica capensis is considered to be a migrant to the European continent except for Spain, where it is resident. It is found across Africa, the Indian subcontinent, South-East Asia, and Australia. INCLUSIVE education , *CONCEPT learning , *TRANSFER of training , *EMIGRATION & immigration , *SCHOOL integration - Abstract
The transformation that Italian society has undergone in recent decades because of immigration poses significant challenges to schools, primarily in developing effective strategies to teach Italian to pupils with a migrant background. Additionally, as a consequence of recent advances in neuroscience, the concept of translanguaging has emerged, which advocates the deliberate integration of languages in the classroom in order to harness the full linguistic potential of bilingual children. Research has demonstrated that translanguaging strategies can facilitate language learning and conceptual transfer from L1 to L2. Consequently, it is important to implement methodologies that enhance and support the development of a multilingual repertoire, with a view to the inclusion and education of future citizens. - Abstract
The main objective of this article is to initiate a reflection on the fundamental significance, in the lives of individuals born and raised in Apulia (Italy), of returning to their homeland and roots after having relocated. Following an outline of the historical, sociological, and geographical context, the psychological analysis will focus on migration, a longstanding phenomenon in Italy, to elucidate the cultural and familial factors motivating individuals from Apulian region to depart initially and subsequently, for diverse reasons, to return. Through the depiction of a co-therapy session and the articulation of elements intrinsic to the therapists themselves, this article will shed light on the characteristics of Apulian families - culturally intertwined, matriarchal, and often possessing fluid boundaries - aiming to understand the influences that, even amidst migration, facilitate a nuanced equilibrium between attachment and separation. The city of Venice has historically been open to travellers and newcomers, and its stones have spoken in many languages, engendering a myriad of cross-cultural dialogues between the human and the nonhuman environment. With its waters reflecting multiple images, the city is an apt example for a proposed new theory on geometaphors that considers the poetic metaphors in their exact geographical and physical location. This essay applies this concept to Eugenia Bulat's contemporary poetry. A unique figure in the Italian literary landscape, Bulat invites an innovative geocritical reading of the city and her verses. In Moldova she was the first democratically elected mayor of her town, but in Venice she was a caretaker for the elderly. This experiential clash inspired three collections of poems. Through her gaze, elements of the amphibious Venetian ecosystem – water and stone – become metaphors of migrant femininity and stimulate an ethic of openness and respect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Currently, like all other societies, even the Italian one faces the challenges of demographic changes due to migration. Among these, the educational one: it is urgent to give structural and lasting responses over time, so that we can aim at an educational reform that values linguistic and cultural diversity and brings equity and social justice at school. This article explores some of the new educational challenges of the 21st century, in relation to the presence of students with a migrant background in Italian schools. It aims to rethink teaching through the decolonial lens, challenging the Eurocentric dominance in school curricula and highlighting its potential to foster an intercultural perspective, towards a community that embraces the "culture of difference". In her article, Magdalena Horodecka analyzes Jarosław Mikołajewski’s literary reportage Wielki przypływ [High Tide] (2015), approaching the text in the perspective of literary journalism studies and literary anthropology. Key in Horodecka’s interpretation are the tools of journalistic epistemology, particularly the concept of transparency. She also examines ethical issues and the problem of migration. In Mikołajewski’s book, an important role is played by the characteristics of the Italian people who help the refugees. A crucial aspect of his narration and perception is the art of dialogue with the direct witnesses of events. Horodecka also stresses the importance of his reflective attitude, which is stimulated by the landscape of the Lampedusa island. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article proposes an insight into how migrants face the migrant journey. With the aim of analysing this subject matter, we referred to three of the most emblematic autobiographies in the field of migrant literature, namely: Io, venditore di elefanti, by Pap Khouma (1990), Ama il tuo sogno. Vita e rivolta nella terra dell’oro rosso by Yvan Sagnet (2012), and Il deserto negli occhi by Ibrahim Kane Annour (2013). These are the first-hand testimonies that allowed us to examine in depth the different stages of a migrant journey: from the preparations to the way back; going through the departure, the transit per se, and the settlement in the new territory. For the migrants, not only this journey is the expression of the need to improve their living conditions, but, at the same time, it also represents a path that leads them to an inner growth, and to the knowledge of themselves and of the Other. Moreover, while reading these testimonies, the reader is brought to the dimension of the otherness, thus becoming able to experience empathy and sharing.

In this article, the author proposes three layers of film analysis and spectatorship in order to discuss film director Elia Moutamid's oeuvre. The first layer refers to the filmic texts (plots and aesthetics), the second situates the films in their socio-historical and cinematographic contexts, and the third layer relates the films to Plato's simile of the cave, establishing their philosophical quality. The author argues that the interrelation between these various layers attests to the refinement of Moutamid's cinematic production. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article draws on Mieke Bal's reflections about the use of the documentary film as a way to explore migration cultures from a scholarly perspective, and it chronicles the production of Maka (2022), a film about Geneviève Makaping's life and thoughts on race and belonging. It focuses on the collaboration and dialogue with Makaping and director Elia Moutamid, among other members of the creative team, and it argues that collaboration and dialogue can have an impact beyond the academic context. Indeed, Maka is a hybrid work that blends theory and biographical storytelling, and it is therefore accessible to a larger audience. Documentaries involve self-reflective practices which might be useful to interrogate our position throughout the research process and to reflect upon the ethical questions which are involved in scholarly work about migration cultures. This article explores how two recent configurations of the Albanian sworn virgin prompt a reflection on the intersection of transgender discourses with questions of transnational mobility. Elvira Dones's novel Vergine giurata and its eponymous cinematic adaptation (directed by Laura Bispuri) imagine in diverging ways the material and symbolic disruptions that occur when this tribally sanctioned figure leaves Albania for another nation. Novel and film suggest to different degrees how this distinctive transgender figure challenges binary regimes of heteronormativity and the power-knowledge systems underpinning them, revealing contrasting investments in the possibilities of the sworn virgin's integration into the respective migratory settings. The lexicon of immigrant writers in Italy is full of words derived from their mother tongues. Among the semantic fields most involved is undoubtedly that of fashion. We find many clothes, dresses, fabrics typical of the areas of emigration to Italy: Arab world, states of sub-Saharan Africa, Middle East and Asia. Some of these are attested in Italian for a long time now (burnus, fez, sari); others are very recent, in correlation with migration and the presence of immigrant communities in Italy. The term ‘migratismo’ has been proposed for this class of words. Some ‘migratismi’ have already spread in Italian and recorded in vocabularies (for example the veils of Islamic women: burqa, hijab, niqab). Their circulation has produced derived and compound words (burkini, antiburqa). Others are well detectable in the italian literature of migration, where the authors explain the meaning with a gloss or in a note. Searches in archives and databases allow to understand the real circulation of these words.

- Abstract

Children from migrant backgrounds with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are typically diagnosed at a later age than non-migrante children, and those whose parents do not adequately speak the language of the host country receive less attention and fewer treatment options. The study aims to identify the main barriers that prevent immigrant families with an autistic child from accessing health services. We interviewed 36 parents of children with ASD who have been living in Italy for more than 8 years. The main difficulties noted include lack of knowledge of the Italian language, limited health literacy, and misunderstandings in the implementation of educational practices that are useful to their child, due to their different cultural backgrounds.

This essay aims to investigate Laura Pariani as one of the most experimental contemporary Italian authors, with the purpose of highlighting those elements that characterise the post-postmodern novels. Her writing style is constructed by fragments, with a language constantly splitted between different languages, and it is focused on the issues connected to the emigration. In particular, three novels of the author will be taken into account, because they seem to best represent the characteristics of this new novel typology: Quando Dio ballava il tango (2002), Ghiacciofuoco (2007 – co-authored by Nicola Lecca) and Il piatto dell’angelo (2013). Those novels highlight some topoi of migrant literature, such as the loss of roots, the desire to retreat to one’s memories, the sense of loneliness and rootlessness etc. Emigration, for those who go away, represents uncertainty and displacement, loss of memory and roots; for those who are still waiting emigration represents vain hope, grief and despair. The analysis will try to understand if the contemporary transnational flows and the deterritorialization could be taken into account by the new post-postmodern novel; in particular, this essay aims to investigate the fluidity of contemporary storytelling, which inevitably leads to the existence of flexible identity structures.

Passages is a book about journeys: mythic, realistic journeys that bring people from one place to another, from one universe to another one. In this sense, all the characters are immigrants and/or exiles, moving through three different places: a Caribbean island (Haiti), Miami and Montreal. The aim of this essay is to introduce a non-specialist reader to the main themes of Ollivier’s novel which stands on migration, identity and home.

- Abstract
The "stranger" and the "other" are very different intrapsychic and relational topics both in their sources and their developments. Particularly is examined what's happen in migration when the foreign can suddenly become a "stranger" more then simply an "other". The perception of the migrants seems to waver between a complete otherness and a distorted double. As Abdelmalek Sayad said, migration has a "mirror function": both migrants and natives see in each other their own "strange parts", parts that they can't recognize as theirs. All this is examined in the complex situation of the coronavirus pandemic, with its deep psychic and anthropological consequences due to the sudden alteration of the borderline between the familiar/safe and the unfamiliar/dangerous with its anxiuos and uncanny effects that seem to transform any "other" in a "stranger".

This manuscript reviews Translanguaging as Everyday Practice, edited by Gerardo Mazzaferro (Università degli Studi di Torino) and published in 2018 by Springer. The book contains 14 studies, drawing on different methodological approaches and implemented in multiple contexts, that contribute to a rich analysis of translanguaging. The concept of translanguaging is explored at the intersection of broader discussions, such as identity construction in immigrant or minority communities, language maintenance and loss, and individual agency in educational contexts. In this review, following a brief overview of the book’s objectives and intended audience, the contents of the individual chapters are presented with commentary on noteworthy and valuable contributions as well as minor critiques, which do not detract from the value of this excellent volume.

In the 19th century, Red kite (Milvus milvus) was very common and widespread in Sardinia, but in the mid-900 an important decline occurred. Since the 1970s the species has been studied more continuously, but in recent years the published data seem contradictory. In 2018-2020, authors carried out specific research to collect data on the population of the Red kite in Sardinia exploring both the historical range of the species and areas where the species was reported in the past. In 2018-2020, we estimated 10-13 breeding pairs in an area of about 3,440 km2 located in the north west of Sardinia. As regard wintering, we estimated 30-40 birds in winters 2018-2019 and 2019-2020, whereas 90-110 birds were counted in winter 2020-2021. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Between 1880 and 1940 paternalist, philanthropic initiatives promoted the arts as an instrument to improve the condition of working people, and offer leisure opportunities to the aspiring classes of East London away from the West End. The foundation of the People's Palace in 1887 created opportunities for operatic performances which brought together philanthropist volunteers and local people, and attracted audiences from across the new suburbs stretching beyond the Mile End Road. These included from as early as 1893 'costume recitals' of 'scenes from popular Italian operas', and later regular seasons by the main touring Italian opera companies. This article uses archive sources from a range of institutions alongside literary and musical periodicals and local press to suggest ways in which Italian opera was viewed in relation to native and other foreign repertoires, and what this operatic 'slice of life' reveals about popular ideas of italianità in East London across this period.
