Notable products introduced at Comdex-Fall 1988 include: Presentation Manager from IBM and Microsoft; Wang Laboratories' Freestyle, which is an operating environment-user interface; Sterling Castle Software's Logic Gem, a logic processor and code generator; Intel's Digital Video Interface, which enables microcomputers to display full-motion video and television-like images; Samna Corp's Ami, a word processor that brings some of the graphical features found on the Macintosh to DOS microcomputers: Aristotle Industries Inc's HARDPAC Micro 20 and 40 portable hard disk drives; and the Commodore Amiga 2500, a 68020-based microcomputer that is capable of multitasking. Abstract

IBM's refusal to license the Micro Channel Architecture to vendors that have not paid outstanding PC, XT, and AT license fees is a brilliant strategy. IBM will profit either from collecting these fees or from keeping prices of Micro Channel clone systems artificially high if it fails to collect them. IBM is expected to introduce its next round of products on Jun 2, 1988. Toshiba's T1000 and T2000 laptop computers are highly rated products; the T1000 can accommodate significant memory expansion, and the high-end T1200's screen has excellent back lighting. Traveling Software markets Battery Saver, a TSR program for laptops that monitors battery condition. Ashton-Tate introduces two impressive new programs: FullWrite, a word processing program for the Macintosh that has more advanced capabilities than most word processors; and Full Impact, a spreadsheet program that lets users format graphics.

Abstract

Three features of the Micro Channel architecture are discussed. These features broaden the characteristics of that architecture to support advanced I/O devices or systems. These new features are a streaming data procedure (including 64-b transfers), address and data parity, and synchronous exception signaling. Streaming data is a procedure that provides the ability to transfer multiple data cycles within one bus envelope. The procedure distributes the device selection overhead across the total packet, nearly doubling (for 32 b) or quadrupling (for 64 b) the performance capability of the Micro Channel bus. Address and data parity are provided to improve the data integrity characteristics of the Micro Channel architecture. These mechanisms are particularly well suited to detecting typical errors, such as card seating problems, power disturbance, and electromagnetic interference. The Micro Channel architecture provides for exception signaling with the CHCK signal. The enhancements use previously reserved pins on the Micro Channel bus and retain compatibility with existing card and system board designs. >
