Railroads are colored red, some turnpikes and roads are orange, rivers and other bodies of water are blue. Relief shown by hachures (strokes of short line segments or curves drawn in the direction of the steepest slope). Mounted on linen. Verso of one panel stamped in red and blue ink with image of Zouave bearing a U.S. flag and legend, Red White and Blue; verso of another panel stamped in blue with image of scroll reading, Stand by the Flag and stamped 38; Red ink notation on verso of another panel, Done April 2d 1863.

- Abstract
Map of the Appomattox court house showing the surrounding area including roads, dwellings, landowner's names, the South Side Railroad, rivers, and other topography. Surveyed and drawn by Major J. E. Weyss, assisted by F. Theilkuhl, J. Strasser and G. Thompson., The Battle of Appomattox Court House was the final engagement for Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia before their surrender there on April 9, 1865. Lee spent the week prior looking for provisions for his army, to no avail. On April 6, about 7,700 Confederates cut of from the main army were captured at Sailor's Creek. The following day, Grant suggested that Lee surrender the remainder of his army, but Lee refused. The two armies met at Appomattox Court House at dawn on April 9, the Union 150,000 strong, while only 28,000 remained of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia. After a short skirmish and seeing that his army was overwhelmingly outnumbered, Lee agreed to surrender. The opposing generals met at the house of Wilmer McLean to discuss terms.

Weyss, assisted by F. Theilkuhl, J. Strasser and G. Thompson., Robert E. Lee retreated through Farmville with his army to escape Union forces. The Confederate Army planned to use Farmville as a place to get rations to feed its soldiers. General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia became surrounded upon their approach and Lee eventually surrendered at Appomattox Court House.

Detailed map of the environs of Antietam with Confederate entrenchments in red. Also shows the Potomac River, the town of Sharpsburg, important turnpikes, landowners names, roads, and topography. Surveyed and drawn by Major J.E. Weyss, assisted by F. Theilkuhl, J. Strasser, and G. Thompson., The Battle of Antietam was fought on September 17, 1862 at Sharpsburg (Md.) and Antietam Creek. It is the bloodiest single-day battle in American history with over 22,000 casualties. Union Major Generals George B. McClellan and Joseph Hooker attacked Confederate General Robert E. Lee's army at Antietam Creek, eventually pushing them to the Potomac River and Lee withdrew to Virginia.

Thompson., The Battle of Fredericksburg was fought in December 1862 in Fredericksburg, Virginia, between Confederate General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia and Union Major General Ambrose Burnside's Army of the Potomac. Burnside ordered his men to assault the entrenched Confederate line. Successive charges failed until Burnside asked Lee for a truce on December 14. On December 15 Federal forces withdrew across the Rappahannock River. The Union suffered 12,653 casualties, while the Confederates sustained only 4,201.

Surveyed and drawn by Major J.E. Weyss, assisted by F. Theilkuhl, J. Strasser and G. Thompson., The Bermuda Hundred Campaign consisted of a series of battles fought in the small town outside of Richmond, Virginia. The five main battles fought during the campaign include: Port Walthall Junction, Swift Creek, Chester Station, Proctor's Creek, and Ware Bottom Church. The ultimate goal was for the Union Army to cut the Confederate supply line at Richmond. Ultimately, Union Major General Benjamin Butler and his troops were stopped and held back by Confederate General P.G.T. (Pierre Gustave Toutant) Beauregard at Bermuda Hundred.

Surveyed and drawn by Major J.E. Weyss, assisted by F. Theilkuhl, J. Strasser and G. Thompson., The Siege of Petersburg lasted 292 days. Union forces led by Union Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant engaged in trench warfare (trench warfare became very prominent during World War I) in an attempt to surround the Confederate General Robert E. Lee's forces and cut off their supply line. Lee eventually retreated and later surrendered at the Appomattox Court House.

Grant's army, suffering almost five times the casualties of the Union.

Lee's Confederate army was retreating from Richmond when Union General Philip Sheridan engaged troops and forced the surrender of 8 Confederate generals which was followed by General Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House three days later.

Thompson., The Battle of Harpers Ferry was fought in September 1862 in current-day West Virginia between Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson's Confederate Army and Colonel Dixon Mile's garrison. Jackson surrounded the town and relentlessly shelled the garrison until Miles surrendered. The Confederates captured 12,000 men, 13,000 small arms, 200 wagons, and 73 artillery pieces from the Harpers Ferry Armory.

Thompson., The Battle of the Wilderness, part of Gen. Grant's Overland Campaign, was fought on May 5 to May 7, 1864. The inconclusive battle saw 125,000 Union soldiers assault the wooded defensive position of Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, numbering about 65,000. The forest provided some cover from Grant's superior artillery. Grant's attack on May 6 and Longstreet's counterattack on May 7 resulted in 17,666 Union casualties and 11,033 Confederate casualties. On May 7, Grant decided to move the move southeast to better terrain to better utilize his numerical advantage.

Lee attempted to create a "V" of defensive earthworks (ditches and trenches) to split the Union advances. The plan fell through, however, and both sides ended in a stalemate with Grant eventually moving his troops south.

Following the Battle of North Anna, Grant's troops moved south to the Pamunkey River. Lee's troops were entrenched at Totopotomoy Creek. Grant was able to fend off the Confederates and continue south to Cold Harbor, which would result in one of the deadliest battles of the Civil War.

Because of this, it became the target of numerous attempts by the Union Army to overtake the city, notably during the Peninsula Campaign of 1862 and the Overland Campaign of 1864. The city finally fell on April 2, 1865.

Grant's Overland Campaign, was fought in May 1864. The court house served as a critical landmark with Confederate General Robert E. Lee's army pushing Union armies back to the court house and engaging in more trench warfare. Multiple attempts on both sides, including hand-to-hand combat, resulted in little progress and an eventual stalemate. Even though it was an indecisive battle, it became one of the deadliest campaigns of the Civil War, with more than 30,000 casualties.
