Abstract

Detailed map of the environs of Fredericksburg giving Confederate entrenchments in red. Also shows the Richmond, Fredericksburg and Potomac Rail Road, landowners names, roads, and topography. Surveyed and drawn by Major J.E. Weyss, assisted by F. Theilkuhl, J. Strasser and G. Thompson.<br />The Battle of Fredericksburg was fought in December 1862 in Fredericksburg, Virginia, between Confederate General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia and Union Major General Ambrose Burnside's Army of the Potomac. Burnside ordered his men to assault the entrenched Confederate line. Successive charges failed until Burnside asked Lee for a truce on December 14. On December 15 Federal forces withdrew across the Rappahannock River. The Union suffered 12,653 casualties, while the Confederates sustained only 4,201.
