Fixed-node diffusion quantum Monte Carlo (FN-DMC) is a widely-trusted many-body method for solving the Schr\"{o}dinger equation, known for its reliable predictions of material and molecular properties. Furthermore, its excellent scalability with system complexity and near-perfect utilization of computational power makes FN-DMC ideally positioned to leverage new advances in computing to address increasingly complex scientific problems. Even though the method is widely used as a computational gold standard, reproducibility across the numerous FN-DMC code implementations has yet to be demonstrated. This difficulty stems from the diverse array of DMC algorithms and trial wave functions, compounded by the method's inherent stochastic nature. This study represents a community-wide effort to address the titular question, affirming that: Yes, FN-DMC is reproducible (when handled with care). Using the water-methane dimer as the canonical test case, we compare results from eleven different FN-DMC codes and show that the approximations to treat the non-locality of pseudopotentials are the primary source of the discrepancies between them. In particular, we demonstrate that, for the same choice of determinantal component in the trial wave function, reliable and reproducible predictions can be achieved by employing the T-move (TM), the determinant locality approximation (DLA), or the determinant T-move (DTM) schemes, while the older locality approximation (LA) leads to considerable variability in results. This work lays the foundation to establish accurate and reproducible FN-DMC estimates for all future studies across applications in materials science, physics, chemistry, and biology.

The world of nanoscales in fluidics is the frontier where the continuum of fluid mechanics meets the atomic, and even quantum, nature of matter. While water dynamics remains largely classical under extreme confinement, several experiments have recently reported coupling between water transport and the electronic degrees of freedom of the confining materials. This avenue prompts us to reconsider nanoscale hydrodynamic flows under the perspective of interacting excitations, akin to condensed matter frameworks. Here we show, using a combination of many-body theory and molecular simulations, that the flow of a liquid can induce the flow of another liquid behind a separating wall, at odds with the prediction of continuum hydrodynamics. We further show that the range of this 'flow tunnelling' can be tuned through the solid's electronic excitations, with a maximum occurring when these are at resonance with the liquid's charge density fluctuations. Flow tunnelling is expected to play a role in global transport across nanoscale fluidic networks, such as lamellar graphene oxide or MXene membranes. It further suggests exploiting the electronic properties of the confining walls for manipulating liquids via their dielectric spectra, beyond the nature and characteristics of individual molecules.

Quantum-mechanical simulations can offer atomic-level insights into chemical processes on surfaces. This understanding is crucial for the rational design of new solid catalysts as well as materials to store energy and mitigate greenhouse gases. However, achieving the accuracy needed for reliable predictions has proven challenging. Density functional theory (DFT), the workhorse quantum-mechanical method, can often lead to inconsistent predictions, necessitating accurate methods from correlated wave-function theory (cWFT). However, the high computational demands and significant user intervention associated with cWFT have traditionally made it impractical to carry out for surfaces. In this work, we address this challenge, presenting an automated framework which leverages multilevel embedding approaches, to apply accurate cWFT methods to ionic surfaces with computational costs approaching DFT. With this framework, we have reproduced experimental adsorption enthalpies for a diverse set of 19 adsorbate-surface systems. Moreover, we resolve long-standing debates on the adsorption configuration of several systems, while offering valuable benchmarks to assess DFT. This framework is completely open-source, making it possible to now routinely apply cWFT to complex problems in ionic surface chemistry.

The accurate treatment of non-covalent interactions is necessary to model a wide range of applications, from molecular crystals to surface catalysts to aqueous solutions and many more. Quantum diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) and coupled cluster theory with single, double and perturbative triple excitations [CCSD(T)] are considered two widely-trusted methods for treating non-covalent interactions. However, while they have been well-validated for small molecules, recent work has indicated that these two methods can disagree by more than $7.5\,$kcal/mol for larger systems. The origin of this discrepancy remains unknown. Moreover, the lack of systematic comparisons, particularly for medium-sized complexes, has made it difficult to identify which systems may be prone to such disagreements and the potential scale of these differences. In this work, we leverage the latest developments in DMC to compute interaction energies for the entire S66 dataset, containing 66 medium-sized complexes with a balanced representation of dispersion and electrostatic interactions. Comparison to previous CCSD(T) references reveals systematic trends, with DMC predicting stronger binding than CCSD(T) for electrostatic-dominated systems, while the binding becomes weaker for dispersion-dominated systems. We show that the relative strength of this discrepancy is correlated to the ratio of electrostatic and dispersion interactions, as obtained from energy decomposition analysis methods. Finally, we pinpoint systems in the S66 dataset where these discrepancies are particularly prominent, offering cost-effective benchmarks to guide future developments in DMC, CCSD(T) as well as the wider electronic structure theory community.

In computational physics, chemistry, and biology, the implementation of new techniques in a shared and open source software lowers barriers to entry and promotes rapid scientific progress. However, effectively training new software users presents several challenges. Common methods like direct knowledge transfer and in-person workshops are limited in reach and comprehensiveness. Furthermore, while the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the benefits of online training, traditional online tutorials can quickly become outdated and may not cover all the software's functionalities. To address these issues, here we introduce ``PLUMED Tutorials'', a collaborative model for developing, sharing, and updating online tutorials. This initiative utilizes repository management and continuous integration to ensure compatibility with software updates. Moreover, the tutorials are interconnected to form a structured learning path and are enriched with automatic annotations to provide broader context. This paper describes the R package fdesigns that implements a methodology for identifying Bayesian optimal experimental designs for models whose factor settings are functions, known as profile factors. This type of experiments which involve factors that vary dynamically over time, presenting unique challenges in both estimation and design due to the infinite-dimensional nature of functions. The package fdesigns implements a dimension reduction method leveraging basis functions of the B-spline basis system. The package fdesigns contains functions that effectively reduce the design problem to the optimisation of basis coefficients for functional linear functional generalised linear models, and it accommodates various options. Applications of the fdesigns package are demonstrated through a series of examples that showcase its capabilities in identifying optimal designs for functional linear and generalised linear models. The examples highlight how the package's functions can be used to efficiently design experiments involving both profile and scalar factors, including interactions and polynomial effects.

Recent work has suggested that nanoconfined water may exhibit superionic proton transport at lower temperatures and pressures than bulk water. Using first-principles-level simulations, we study the role of nuclear quantum effects in inducing this superionicity in nanoconfined water. We show that nuclear quantum effects increase the ionic conductivity of nanoconfined hexatic water, leading to superionic behaviour at lower temperatures and pressures than previously thought possible. Machine learning potentials have revolutionised the field of atomistic simulations in recent years and are becoming a mainstay in the toolbox of computational scientists. This paper aims to provide an overview and introduction into machine learning potentials and their practical application to scientific problems. We provide a systematic guide for developing machine learning potentials, reviewing chemical descriptors, regression models, data generation and validation approaches. We begin with an emphasis on the earlier generation of models, such as high-dimensional neural network potentials (HD-NNPs) and Gaussian approximation potential (GAP), to provide historical perspective and guide the reader towards the understanding of recent developments, which are discussed in detail thereafter. Furthermore, we refer to relevant expert reviews, open-source software, and practical examples - further lowering the barrier to exploring these methods. The paper ends with selected showcase examples, highlighting the capabilities of machine learning potentials and how they can be applied to push the boundaries in atomistic simulations.

Open Radio Access Networks (ORAN) is a new architectural approach, having been proposed only a few years ago, and it is an expansion of the current Next Generation Radio Access Networks (NG-RAN) of 5G. ORAN aims to break this closed RAN market that is controlled by a handful of vendors, by implementing open interfaces between the different Radio Access Networks (RAN) components, and by introducing modern technologies to the RAN like machine learning, virtualization, and disaggregation. However, the architectural design of ORAN was recently causing concerns and debates about its security, which is considered one of its major drawbacks. Several theoretical risk analyses related to ORAN have been conducted, but to the best of our knowledge, not even a single practical one has been performed yet. The industrial landscape is undergoing a significant transformation, moving away from traditional wired fieldbus networks to cutting-edge 5G mobile networks. This transition, extending from local applications to company-wide use and spanning multiple factories, is driven by the promise of low-latency communication and seamless connectivity for various devices in industrial settings. However, besides these tremendous benefits, the integration of 5G as the communication infrastructure in industrial networks introduces a new set of risks and threats to the security of industrial systems. The inherent complexity of 5G systems poses unique challenges for ensuring a secure integration, surpassing those encountered with any technology previously utilized in industrial networks. Most importantly, the distinct characteristics of industrial networks, such as real-time operation, required safety guarantees, and high availability requirements, further complicate this task. As the industrial transition from wired to wireless networks is a relatively new concept, a lack of guidance and recommendations on securely integrating 5G renders many industrial systems vulnerable and exposed to threats associated with 5G. To address this situation, in this paper, we summarize the state-of-the-art and derive a set of recommendations for the secure integration of 5G into industrial networks based on a thorough analysis of the research landscape. The increase in the demand for eXtended Reality (XR)/Virtual Reality (VR) services in the recent years, poses a great challenge for Wi-Fi networks to maintain the strict latency requirements. In VR over Wi-Fi, latency is a significant issue. In fact, VR users expect instantaneous responses to their interactions, and any noticeable delay can disrupt user experience. Such disruptions can cause motion sickness, and users might end up quitting the service. Differentiating interactive VR traffic from Non-VR traffic within a Wi-Fi network can aim to decrease latency for VR users and improve Wi-Fi Quality of Service (QoS) with giving priority to VR users in the access point (AP) and efficiently handle VR traffic. In this paper, we propose a machine learning-based approach for identifying interactive VR traffic in a Cloud-Edge VR scenario. The correlation between downlink and uplink is crucial in our study. First, we extract features from single-user traffic characteristics and then, we compare six common classification techniques (i.e., Logistic Regression, Support Vector Machines, k-Nearest Neighbors, Decision Trees, Random Forest, and Naive Bayes). For each classifier, a process of hyperparameter tuning and feature selection, namely permutation importance is applied. The model created is evaluated using datasets generated by different VR applications, including both single and multi-user cases. Then, a Wi-Fi network simulator is used to analyze the VR traffic identification and prioritization QoS improvements. Our simulation results show that we successfully reduce VR traffic delays by a factor of 4.2x compared to scenarios without prioritization, while incurring only a 2.3x increase in delay for background (BG) traffic related to Non-VR services., Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures

Water's ability to autoionize into hydroxide and hydronium ions profoundly influences surface properties, rendering interfaces either basic or acidic. While it is well-established that protons show an affinity to the air-water interface, a critical knowledge gap exists in technologically relevant surfaces like the graphene-water interface. Here we use machine learning-based simulations with first-principles accuracy to unravel the behavior of the hydroxide and hydronium ions at the graphene-water interface. Our findings reveal that protons accumulate at the graphene-water interface, with the hydronium ion predominantly residing in the first contact layer of water. In contrast, the hydroxide ion exhibits a bimodal distribution, found both near the surface and towards the interior layers. Analysis of the underlying electronic structure reveals local polarization effects, resulting in counterintuitive charge rearrangement. Proton propensity to the graphene-water interface challenges the interpretation of surface experiments and is expected to have far-reaching consequences for ion conductivity, interfacial reactivity, and proton-mediated processes.

Water confined in nanoscale cavities plays a crucial role in everyday phenomena in geology and biology, as well as technological applications at the water-energy nexus. However, even understanding the basic properties of nano-confined water is extremely challenging for theory, simulations, and experiments. In particular, determining the melting temperature of quasi-one-dimensional ice polymorphs confined in carbon nanotubes has proven to be an exceptionally difficult task, with previous experimental and classical simulations approaches report values ranging from $\sim 180 \text{ K}$ up to $\sim 450 \text{ K}$ at ambient pressure. In this work, we use a machine learning potential that delivers first principles accuracy to study the phase diagram of water for confinement diameters $ 9.5 < d < 12.5 \text{ \AA}$. We find that several distinct ice polymorphs melt in a surprisingly narrow range between $\sim 280 \text{ K}$ and $\sim 310 \text{ K}$, with a melting mechanism that depends on the nanotube diameter. These results shed new light on the melting of ice in one-dimension and have implications for the operating conditions of carbon-based filtration and desalination devices.

Biphasic interfaces are complex but fascinating regimes that display a number of properties distinct from those of the bulk. The CO$_2$-H$_2$O interface, in particular, has been the subject of a number of studies on account of its importance for the carbon life cycle as well as carbon capture and sequestration schemes. Despite this attention, there remain a number of open questions on the nature of the CO$_2$-H$_2$O interface, particularly concerning the interfacial tension and phase behavior of CO$_2$ at the interface. In this paper, we seek to address these ambiguities using ab initio-quality simulations. Harnessing the benefits of machine-learned potentials and enhanced statistical sampling methods, we present an ab initio-level description of the CO$_2$-H$_2$O interface. Interfacial tensions are predicted from 1-500 bar and found to be in close agreement with experiment at the pressures for which experimental data is available. Structural analyses indicate the build-up of an adsorbed, saturated CO$_2$ film forming at low pressure (20 bar) with properties similar to those of the bulk liquid, but preferential perpendicular alignment with respect to the interface. CO$_2$ monolayer build-up coincides with a reduced structuring of water molecules close to the interface. This study highlights the predictive nature of machine-learned potentials for complex macroscopic properties of biphasic interfaces, and the mechanistic insight obtained into carbon dioxide aggregation at the water interface is of high relevance for geoscience, climate research, and materials science., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures

Many of graphene's remarkable properties are intrinsically linked to its inherent ripples. Defects, whether naturally present or artificially introduced, are known to have a strong impact on the rippling of graphene. However, how defects alter ripple dynamics in two-dimensional (2D) materials in general, and graphene in particular, remains largely unexplored. Here, using machine learning-driven molecular dynamics simulations, we reveal a fundamental connection between defect concentration and ripple dynamics in freestanding graphene sheets. Specifically, we find that at a critical concentration of approximately 0.1%, dynamic rippling undergoes a transition from freely propagating to static ripples. This is in quantitative alignment with the experimentally observed turning point in the non-monotonic scaling of the Young's modulus and emphasises the critical interplay between defects and material dynamics. CO$_2$ capture using carbon-based materials, particularly graphene and graphene-like materials, is a promising strategy to deal with CO$_2$ emissions. However, significant gaps remain in our understanding of the molecular-level interaction between CO$_2$ molecules and graphene, particularly, in terms of chemical bonding and electron transfer. In this work, we employ random structure search and density functional theory to understand the adsorption of CO$_2$ molecules on Ca, Sr, Na, K, and Ti decorated graphene surfaces. Compared to the pristine material, we observe enhanced CO$_2$ adsorption on the decorated graphene surfaces. Particularly on group 2 metals and titanium decorated graphene, CO$_2$ can be strongly chemisorbed as a bent CO$_2$ anion or as an oxalate, depending on the number of CO$_2$ molecules. Electronic structure analysis reveals the adsorption mechanism to involve an ionic charge transfer from the metal adatom to the adsorbed CO$_2$. Calculating sublimation enthalpies of molecular crystal polymorphs is relevant to a wide range of technological applications. However, predicting these quantities at first-principles accuracy -- even with the aid of machine learning potentials -- is a challenge that requires sub-kJ/mol accuracy in the potential energy surface and finite-temperature sampling. We present an accurate and data-efficient protocol based on fine-tuning of the foundational MACE-MP-0 model and showcase its capabilities on sublimation enthalpies and physical properties of ice polymorphs. Our approach requires only a few tens of training structures to achieve sub-kJ/mol accuracy in the sublimation enthalpies and sub 1 % error in densities for polymorphs at finite temperature and pressure. Exploiting this data efficiency, we explore simulations of hexagonal ice at the random phase approximation level of theory at experimental temperatures and pressures, calculating its physical properties, like pair correlation function and density, with good agreement with experiments. In this paper, we propose a novel approach for estimating Archimedean copula generators in a conditional setting, incorporating endogenous variables. Our method allows for the evaluation of the impact of the different levels of covariates on both the strength and shape of dependence by directly estimating the generator function rather than the copula itself. As such, we contribute to relaxing the simplifying assumption inherent in traditional copula modeling. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our methodology through applications in two diverse settings: a diabetic retinopathy study and a claims reserving analysis. In both cases, we show how considering the influence of covariates enables a more accurate capture of the underlying dependence structure in the data, thus enhancing the applicability of copula models, particularly in actuarial contexts.

The basal plane of graphene can function as a selective barrier that is permeable to protons but impermeable to all ions and gases, stimulating its use in applications such as membranes, catalysis and isotope separation. Protons can chemically adsorb on graphene and hydrogenate it, inducing a conductor-insulator transition that has been explored intensively in graphene electronic devices. However, both processes face energy barriers and various strategies have been proposed to accelerate proton transport, for example by introducing vacancies, incorporating catalytic metals or chemically functionalizing the lattice. However, these techniques can compromise other properties, such as ion selectivity or mechanical stability. Here we show that independent control of the electric field, E, at around 1 V nm-1, and charge-carrier density, n, at around 1 x 10^14 cm-2, in double-gated graphene allows the decoupling of proton transport from lattice hydrogenation and can thereby accelerate proton transport such that it approaches the limiting electrolyte current for our devices. Proton transport and hydrogenation can be driven selectively with precision and robustness, enabling proton-based logic and memory graphene devices that have on-off ratios spanning orders of magnitude. Our results show that field effects can accelerate and decouple electrochemical processes in double-gated 2D crystals and demonstrate the possibility of mapping such processes as a function of E and n, which is a new technique for the study of 2D electrode-electrolyte interfaces.

Molecular crystals play a central role in a wide range of scientific fields, including pharmaceuticals and organic semiconductor devices. However, they are challenging systems to model accurately with computational approaches because of a delicate interplay of intermolecular interactions such as hydrogen bonding and van der Waals dispersion forces. Here, by exploiting recent algorithmic developments, we report the first set of diffusion Monte Carlo lattice energies for all 23 molecular crystals in the popular and widely used X23 dataset. Comparisons with previous state-of-the-art lattice energy predictions (on a subset of the dataset) and a careful analysis of experimental sublimation enthalpies reveals that high-accuracy computational methods are now at least as reliable as (computationally derived) experiments for the lattice energies of molecular crystals. Overall, this work demonstrates the feasibility of high-level explicitly correlated electronic structure methods for broad benchmarking studies in complex condensed phase systems, and signposts a route towards closer agreement between experiment and simulation.

Virtual Reality (VR) streaming enables end-users to seamlessly immerse themselves in interactive virtual environments using even low-end devices. However, the quality of the VR experience heavily relies on Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi) performance, since it serves as the last hop in the network chain. Our study delves into the intricate interplay between Wi-Fi and VR traffic, drawing upon empirical data and leveraging a Wi-Fi simulator. In this work, we further evaluate Wi-Fi's suitability for VR streaming in terms of the Quality of Service (QoS) it provides. In particular, we employ Unity Render Streaming to remotely stream real-time VR gaming content over Wi-Fi 6 using Web Real-Time Communication (WebRTC), considering a server physically located at the network's edge, near the end user. Our findings demonstrate the system's sustained network performance, showcasing minimal round-trip time (RTT) and jitter at 60 and 90 frames per second (fps). In addition, we uncover the characteristics and patterns of the generated traffic streams, unveiling a distinctive video transmission approach inherent to WebRTC-based services: the systematic packetization of video frames (VFs) and their transmission in discrete batches at regular intervals, regardless of the targeted frame rate. This interval-based transmission strategy maintains consistent video packet delays across video frame rates but leads to increased Wi-Fi airtime consumption. To meet the requirements of modern production, industrial communication increasingly shifts from wired fieldbus to wireless 5G communication. Besides tremendous benefits, this shift introduces severe novel risks, ranging from limited reliability over new security vulnerabilities to a lack of accountability. Machine-learned force fields have transformed the atomistic modelling of materials by enabling simulations of ab initio quality on unprecedented time and length scales. However, they are currently limited by: (i) the significant computational and human effort that must go into development and validation of potentials for each particular system of interest; and (ii) a general lack of transferability from one chemical system to the next. Here, using the state-of-the-art MACE architecture we introduce a single general-purpose ML model, trained on a public database of 150k inorganic crystals, that is capable of running stable molecular dynamics on molecules and materials. We demonstrate the power of the MACE-MP-0 model - and its qualitative and at times quantitative accuracy - on a diverse set problems in the physical sciences, including the properties of solids, liquids, gases, chemical reactions, interfaces and even the dynamics of a small protein. The Bernal-Fowler ice rules stipulate that each water molecule in an ice crystal should form four hydrogen bonds. However, in extreme or constrained conditions, the arrangement of water molecules deviates from conventional ice rules, resulting in properties significantly different from bulk water. In this study, we employ machine learning-driven first-principles simulations to identify a new stabilization mechanism in nanoconfined ice phases beyond conventional ice rules. Instead of forming four hydrogen bonds, nanoconfined crystalline ice can form a quasi-one-dimensional hydrogen-bonded structure that exhibits only two hydrogen bonds per water molecule. These structures consist of strongly hydrogen-bonded linear chains of water molecules that zig-zag along one dimension, stabilized by van der Waals interactions that stack these chains along the other dimension. The unusual interplay of hydrogen bonding and van der Waals interactions in nanoconfined ice results in atypical proton behavior such as potential ferroelectric behavior, low dielectric response, and long-range proton dynamics., Comment: main text: 14 pages, 6 figures

The extent of ion pairing in solution is an important phenomenon to rationalise transport and thermodynamic properties of electrolytes. A fundamental measure of this pairing is the potential of mean force (PMF) between solvated ions. The relative stabilities of the paired and solvent shared states in the PMF and the barrier between them are highly sensitive to the underlying potential energy surface. However direct application of accurate electronic structure methods is challenging, since long simulations are required. We develop wavefunction based machine learning potentials with the Random Phase Approximation (RPA) and second order Moller-Plesset (MP2) perturbation theory for the prototypical system of Na and Cl ions in water. We show both methods in agreement, predicting the paired and solvent shared states to have similar energies (within 0.2 kcal/mol). We also provide the same benchmarks for different DFT functionals as well as insight into the PMF based on simple analyses of the interactions in the system.
