Distribution. Western Atlantic—USA, from Cape Hatteras to North Carolina, and Brazil (from Amapá to Rio Grande do Sul) (Costa et al. 2003). Ecological notes. From shallow waters to 366 m, more frequently at 60 m depth (Costa et al. 2003). Remarks. Previously recorded as Peneus brasiliensis (Smith 1869; Coelho & Ramos 1972; D’Incao 1998) and as Penaeus (Melicertus) brasiliensis (Pérez-Farfante 1969; Ramos-Porto et al. 1989; Barros & Pimentel 2001). Specimens collected by Santos et al. (2016) were downstream of the São Francisco River, at the border of Alagoas and Sergipe. Recently, Ma et al. (2011) proposed the return of the species Farfantepenaeus and Litopenaeus to the old genus Penaeus Fabricius, but, as this remains an unanswered question, we decided to maintain the classification proposed by Pérez-Farfante & Kensley (1997). Western Atlantic—North Carolina to western Gulf of Mexico, Panamá, West Indies, Colombia, Venezuela, and Brazil (Atol das Rocas, seamounts of North Brazilian Chain, and from Amapá to São Paulo) as Periclimenes americanus Kingsley (Williams 1984; Ramos-Porto & Coelho 1998); as Periclimenes americanus (Kingsley) (Almeida et al. 2012; Hernández-Ávilla et al. 2012; De Grave et al. 2015; Giraldes et al. 2015). Ecological notes. From intertidal up to 105 m depth. Found on estuaries (under branches and mud bottom), on reefs and rocky shores, under rocks covered with algae and hydrozoans, and on rock crevices, also on concretions of calcareous algae, among barnacles on jetties, and on live coral (Ramos-Porto & Coelho 1990; Almeida et al. 2012). Remarks. Previously recorded as Anchistia americana Kingsley, Kemponia americana (Kingsley), and Periclimenes (Harpilius) americanus (Holthuis 1951; Bruce 2004; Almeida et al. 2007 b, 2012), and as Periclimenes americanus (Kingsley 1878; Williams 1984; Ramos-Porto & Coelho 1998; Almeida et al. 2012). Observed on dead portions of corals Acropora prolifera (Lamarck) and A. cervicornis (Lamarck), as Periclimenes americanus, and recorded on dead parts of Mussismilia hartii (Verrill), M. hispida (Verrill), and Siderastrea stellata (Verrill) (Grajal & Laughlin 1984; Young 1986; Santos et al. 2012). Quite similar to Arenaeus mexicanus (Gerstaecker), both species were recently redescribed and some characteristics were pointed to distinguish them as the number of rostrum teeth, spines on the carpus, and the presence or absence of a spine on the epistome. Western Atlantic—USA (North and South Carolina, and Gulf of Mexico), Antilles, Venezuela, and Brazil (Seamounts of São Pedro and São Paulo, Fernando de Noronha, Atol das Rocas, and from Maranhão to Santa Catarina) (Holthuis et al. 1980; Melo 1996; Rieger & Giraldi 1996). Ecological notes. From shallow waters to 90 m of depth. On hard or sandy substrates, coral reefs, dead coral rubble, and algae. Also found in association with sponges (Melo 1996; Almeida et al. 2010) and the Bryozoa Schizoporella unicornis (Alves et al. 2013). Very common inside rhodoliths (Bouzon & Freire 2007). Remarks. According to the classification of Ng et al. (2008) the species belonged to the subfamily Mithracinae, raised recently to family Mithracidae. According to Windsor & Felder (2014), molecular and morphological evidences indicate that M. forceps is closely related to M. sculptus (Lamarck), and both form a clade with M. cinctimanus Stimpson, M. coryphe (Herbst), and M. denticulatus (Bell). Moreover, the same study supported the retention of Mithraculus as a distinct genus, since it did not appear as a well-supported sister group of Mithrax Latreille or any other genus included in their analysis (Previous records in Sergipe. Previously recorded as Penaeus constrictus (Stimpson 1871), as Penaeopsis agassizii Bouvier (De Grave & Fransen 2011), and as Trachypenaeus constrictus (Pérez-Farfante 1971; Coelho & Ramos 1972; Coelho et al. 2006). Western Atlantic—Florida (USA), West Indies to Brazil (from Pará to Sergipe) (Barreto et al. 1993; Melo 1996; Serejo et al. 2006; Almeida et al. 2007 a; Barros-Alves et al. 2015). Ecological notes. From shallow waters to a depth of 30 m. On sandy and rocky substrates and algae bottoms (Melo 1996). Remarks. According to the classification of Ng et al. (2008) this species belonged to the subfamily Mithracinae, which was raised recently to family Mithracidae (Windsor & Felder 2014). However, some genera, including Macrocoeloma Miers, were removed from Mithracidae based on molecular phylogenetics (12S, 16S and COI mitochondrial genes) and a morphological re-examination. This genus is now considered an incertae sedis group, closely related to other Epialtidae (Windsor & Felder 2014). As the position of M. laevigatum is not well defined, we decided to follow the classification of Ng et al. (2008) and retained it in the family Majidae. Previous records in Sergipe. From shallow waters to 25 m. On hard substrates, sand bottoms or mostly associated with aquatic vegetation (Melo 1996). Acanthonyx dissimulatus is frequently found in association with algae, such as red algae, Sargassum sp. C. Agardh, unidentified brown algae, and on drifted algae on sand bottoms (Almeida et al. 2010). Remarks. Acanthonyx dissimulatus was considered endemic from Brazil (Coelho & Torres 1993) but recently the species geographic distribution was expanded to Mexico (Tamburus & Mantelatto 2012). Do not camouflage itself and is parasitized sometimes by sacculinids (Melo 2008). Associated with Bryozoa Schizoporella unicornis at Southeastern of Brazil (Alves et al. 2013). Ecological notes. From intertidal zones to 92 m depth. Mud, shell and sand bottoms. It can also be commensal of Paguridae, Diogenidae, and the Gastropoda Lobatus gigas (Linnaeus) (Melo 1999; Almeida et al. 2007 a). Remarks. Porcellana frontalis Heller and Porcellana stimpsoni A. Synalpheus cf. brevicarpus (Herrick, 1891) (Figure 7C) Material examined. Penaeid—56 (25 M, 17 F, 14 OF); size range: 1.84 ≤ CL ≤ 3.25 mm; average: CL = 2.59 ± 0.36 mm; CZUFS CRU- 00345. Stations. Penaeid—3, 6, and 9. Distribution. Western Atlantic—Florida, Bermuda, Bahamas, West Indies, Panama, and Brazil (from Ceará to Rio Grande do Sul) (Christoffersen 1979, 1998; Bezerra & Coelho 2006; Almeida et al. 2012, 2018). The Eastern Pacific records correspond to Synalpheus digueti Coutière (which also corresponds to multiple species) (Almeida et al. 2012; Santos et al. 2012). Ecological notes. Commensal of sponges of the genus Ircinia Nardo (Bezerra & Coelho 2006). On sandstone reefs, rocks covered by Hydrozoa, and on algae (Almeida et al. 2012). Remarks. Found in the present study associated with a bryozoan (Reteporella sp., Phidolopodidae). Synalpheus brevicarpus belongs to a species complex, which also includes S. brevicarpus sensu (Herrick), S. brevicarpus guerini Coutière, and S. digueti Coutière (Almeida et al. 2012; Santos et al. 2012). Western Atlantic—Florida Keys to Trinidad and Tobago, Curaçao, and Brazil (Ceará, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Sergipe, and from Bahia to São Paulo) (Ramos-Porto & Coelho 1995; Christoffersen 1998; d’Udekem d’Acoz 2000; Almeida et al. 2007 b; Barros-Alves et al. 2015, 2016; Pachelle et al. 2016). Ecological notes. From shallow waters to 22 m of depth. On coral reefs and associated with algae on rocky shores (Almeida et al. 2007 b). Remarks. Part of a monophyletic group composed of Lysmata seticaudata (Risso), L. nilita Dohrn and Holthius, L. moorei (Rathbun), L. intermedia (Kingsley), L. galapagensis Schmitt, L. argentopunctata Wicksten, L. holthuisi Anker, De Grave & Baeza, and L. intermadia, supported by phylogenetic analysis (Baeza 2010). Almeida et al. (2007 b) mentioned that the closest species to L. intermedia are the warm–temperate L. seticaudata and L. nilita Dohrn & Holthuis from the northeastern Atlantic and the Mediterranean, and that the other species currently recognized in the Atlantic are not closely related. Those authors also suggested that the specimens from Bahia belong to a closely related, undescribed species of Lysmata. Western Atlantic—USA (Florida and Gulf of Mexico), Cuba, Jamaica, Haiti, St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, and Brazil (Fernando de Noronha, Atol das Rocas, from Amapá to Alagoas, Bahia, and Espírito Santo) (Miers 1886; Coelho 1967 /1969, 1971 a; Fausto-Filho & Sampaio-Neto 1976; Barreto et al. 1993; Melo 1996; Coelho-Filho 2006). Ecological notes. Lives on depths between 20 to 90 m, normally on calcareous algae bottoms (Melo 1996). Remarks. According to the classification from Ng et al. (2008), the species belongs to the subfamily Mithracinae, which was recently raised to family Mithracidae (Windsor & Felder 2014). Furthermore, some genera, including the Picroceroides Miers, were removed from Mithracidae and included in the subfamily Pisinae Dana (Windsor & Felder 2014; García & Capote 2015). Ecological notes. From intertidal to a depth of 70 m. On coral reefs, sand, mud, broken shells, algae, and sponges. On crevices of coral rubble and Halimeda sp. clumps. Reported in crevices of coral rubble from southern Bahia (Christoffersen 1979; Róman-Contreras & Martínez-Mayén 2010; Almeida et al. 2012; Santos et al. 2012). Remarks. Previously recorded as Alpheus normanni (Kingsley). Later A. packardii was considered a junior synonym of A. normanni (Chace 1937, 1972; Christoffersen 1979). Kim & Abele (1988) removed A. packardii from the synonymy of A. normanni. However, the taxonomy of A. normanni and A. packardii remains unsettled due to the presence of cryptic taxa on both sides of the Americas, and, the true identity of the material from Brazil remains unknown (Williams et al. 2001; Almeida et al. 2012; Soledade & Almeida 2013), requiring a taxonomic revision. Because of that the specie is reported as A. cf. packardii for Brazilian waters. Found in the present study associated with algae banks. Previous records in Sergipe. Western Atlantic—From Cuba to the Virgin Islands, la Ascentión, Quintana Roo, Mexico, along with the Caribbean coast of Central and South America, and the Atlantic coast of South America to Alagoas, Brazil (Records from Ilhéus to Cabo Frio need confirmation). Eastern Atlantic—west coast of Africa, from Mauritania to Angola (Pérez-Farfante 1988; D’Incao 1998). Ecological notes. Found in waters up to 720 m depth, but more frequently at depths less than 70 m, juveniles living in estuarine waters (D’Incao 1998). Remarks. Previously recorded as Penaeus notialis (Pérez-Farfante 1969; D’Incao 1998), as Penaeus duorarum notialis (Coelho & Ramos 1972), and as Penaeus duorarum var. camaronensis (De Grave & Fransen 2011). Part of a monophyletic group composed of Lysmata gacilirostris Wicksten, L. pederseni Rhyne & Lin, L. ankeri Rhyne & Lin, L. nayaritensis Wiksten, L. californica (Stimpson), and L. bahia supported by phylogenetic analysis (Baeza 2010).
