1. Reactivity monitoring using the area method for the subcritic al VENUS-F core within the framework of the FREYA Project

Abstract

Accelerator-Driven Systems (ADS) could be employed to incinerate minor actinides and so partly contribute to answer the problem of nuclear waste management. An ADS consists of the coupling of a subcritical fast reactor to a particle accelerator via a heavy material spallation target. The on-line reactivity monitoring of such an ADS is a serious issue regarding its safety. In order to study the methodology of this monitoring, zero-power experimentswere undertaken at the GUINEVERE facility within the framework of the FP6-IP-EUROTRANS programme. Such experiments have been under completion within the FREYA FP7 project. The GUINEVERE facility is hosted at the SCK-CEN site in Mol (Belgium). It couples the VENUS-F subcritical fast core with the GENEPI-3C accelerator. The latter delivers a beam of deuterons, which are converted into 14-MeV neutrons via fusion reactions on a tritiated target. This paper presents one of the investigated methods for ADS on-line reactivity monitoring which has to be validated in the program of the FREYA project. It describes the results obtained when Pulsed Neutron Source experiments are analysed using the so called Area Method, in order to estimate the reactivity of a few sub-critical configurations of the VENUS-F reactor, around keff= 0.96. First the GUINEVERE facility is described. Then, following general considerations on the Area method, the results of its application to the neutron population time decrease spectra measured after a pulse by several fission chambers spread out over the whole reactor are discussed. Abstract

The Modified Source Multiplication method is used to determine an unknown reactivity level of a reactor from a known one if one has access to the detector counting for both levels when the reactor is fed by a constant neutron source like an Am-Be source. When available, an accelerator driven source, in continuous mode, can be useful as its intensity can be tunable and then adapted to the experimental conditions. However, in that case, the MSM technique must be extended to account for an external source whose intensity, energy and angular distributions can vary from one measurement to another. In this paper, this Modified Multi-Source Multiplication (MMSM) method is applied to measurements done during the FREYA project in the GUINEVERE facility, operated with the GENEPI-3C accelerator providing a mixture of (D,T) and (D,D) neutrons. The monitoring of these sources through the detection of the associated charged particles allows the calculation of the MMSM factors and the estimate of the reactivity values. The results are compared in different configurations with the reactivity obtained with an Am-Be source or in dynamic measurements performed with GENEPI-3C. Their excellent agreement shows the possibility of using such accelerator-based neutron sources for MSM measurements when they are correctly monitored. This is of great interest for deep sub-critical level characterization for which detector count rates per source neutrons might be low.

Abstract

International audience; The characteristics of the ASTRID core (Advanced Sodium Technological Reactor for Industrial Demonstration) must be determined according to well-defined calculation conditions and accuracies. In order to achieve that goal, several steps are required such as mastering the computation procedures, checking the nuclear data in use and bringing evidence with experiments of the validity of the produced values and their uncertainties.Past experiments will allow a quantification of the uncertainties for core characteristics such as βeff or Doppler, a reduction of the uncertainties due to nuclear data (through assimilation) which might remain insufficient. Therefore, past experiments will not cover all requirements either because of the level of uncertainties or because it will not cover ASTRID core specificities such as sodium void reactivity, control rod worth and power map istribution over the cycle. The MASURCA facility is currently under refurbishment until 2023 and will exhibit improved performances. The future GENESIS experimental programme of the MASURCA facility will take advantage of advanced measurement techniques, on one hand, and the possibility of using fuel with degraded Pu vector to develop a solid knowledge of ASTRID core characteristics.

Abstract

International audience; As part of a bilateral agreement on the study of large axially-heterogeneous oxide-fueled SFR cores, CEA and IPPE have recently performed neutron physics experiments in the BFS facility. The configurations of interest are pancake-shape cores with a split fissile column and a sodium plenum, designed to favor a high inner plutonium conversion ratio and a low sodium void worth. Separate effect tests, including local and global sodium void situations as well as various rodded cases, have been done. The measurements included reactivity effects, spectral indices, detailed reaction rate traverses, neutron importance, etc. The analysis of the experiments with Monte Carlo codes and recent nuclear data files shows the following trends core reactivity is predicted within 1.5 % , depending on the nuclear data file used; sodium voiding in the 91 central tubes is predicted within 0.25 %; the calculated axial reaction rate traverses match the experimental ones; the weight of the simulated control rod is predicted within 10percent.

Abstract

International audience; Within the framework of the renovation of the MASURCA research reactor [1], the development of the future instrumentation for physics measurements has to come along with a better control of the conditions in which they are performed. One of the main goals is to improve the masteryof temperature effects that affects all reactivity measurements. The assessment of the temperature correction coefficient actually suffers from a large uncertainty (~20%, k=2) due to the difficult establishment of the average temperature representative of the core fuel part. Increasing the numberof temperature measurement points, currently limited to less than 20, is clearly part of the solution. Due to some set-up constraints specific to the MASURCA facility, the use of miniature sensors allowing quasi-distributed temperature measurements without perturbing the experiments seems promising candidates. In addition to their sensing performances (1°C of precision for a temperature range going from 20°C to 100°C), these temperature sensors must withstand the radiation environments associated with MASURCA that mainly consists in a moderate neutron fluence (up to 1014n/cm²).Based on the feedback obtained in previous studies [2-6] achieved in more severe conditions (higher temperature and high neutron and gamma fluences), and taking advantage of the framework of the NEEDS [7] initiative, CEA and CNRS/LabHC have decided to start the SOMETIME projectdedicated to the design and the qualification of in-core and on-line quasi-distributed temperature measurements systems based on optical fibre Bragg grating sensors (FBG). This kind of sensor will enable online centimetric temperature profiles monitoring using a single optical fibre, thus allowing to minimize both the intrusivity and the induced thermal perturbation in the fuel element compared to the dozen of thermocouples required to get today’s the same profile.In this paper we present the NEEDS initiative, the overall context and the objectives of this project, together with the experimental set-up used in the EOLE facility [8]. Several kinds of FBG temperature transducers have been characterized during a preliminary testing campaign performed inEOLE reactor (2014): their evolution during the irradiation (few 1013n/cm²) is described with a specialfocus on the Bragg wavelength shift with respect to the neutron fluence. Finally, we detail the coming work for the second part of the SOMETIME project which will be dedicated to qualify thefunctionality of a representative FBG temperature instrumentation together with the challenging task of FBG arrays packaging and insertion within a real MASURCA fuel element.[1] W. Abstract

International audience; As a prolongation of the FP-6 GUINEVERE (Generation of Uninterrupted Intense NEutron pulses at the lead VEnus REactor)project at the VENUS-F facility at SCK• CEN, the FP-7 FREYA (Fast Reactor Experiments for hYbrid Applications) project was launched in2011. The FREYA project aims at validating the methodology for subcriticality monitoring of a subcritical core as proposed in the MUSEexperiments conclusions. This is needed for the reactivity monitoring of a powerful ADS (Accelerator Driven System) like MYRRHA.Experiments are also needed for sub-critical and critical ADS and LFR (Lead Fast Reactor) core characterisation for benchmarking andlicensing purposes. Several levels of sub-criticality of the first subcritical core were measured applying the integral Source Jerk methodand compared to the reference results obtained with the MSM (Modified Source Multiplication) method.

Abstract

International audience; Experiments with a subcritical core and an external pulsed neutron source (PNS) have been performed at the VENUS-F reactor of theSCK-CEN during the year 2012 within the frame of the FREYA project of the 7th European Framework Programme. Different reactivity levels,obtained by varying the position of the control rods and the safety rods, have been investigated, with values of kef f ranging between 0.9and 0.96. The area-ratio and the prompt decay constant techniques are well-known techniques to determine the reactivity of the systemfrom the results of PNS experiments. However, both techniques are based on the point kinetics model and hence they are affected by thespatial and energy effects present in real systems, which will cause them to produce biased values of the reactivity. In this work, we applya methodology based on Monte Carlo simulations to assess the spatial and energy effects present in the VENUS-F core and to determinerelationships between the reactivity and the measured parameters (area-ratio and prompt decay constant) that take into account these effects and allow the application of the reactivity determination techniques to obtain accurate reactivity values beyond the limits of the point kinetics model. The results of the validation of this methodology against the experimental results obtained in the VENUS-F reactor will also be discussed.

International audience; Reactor physics experiments are required for the design of a Fast Spectrum TransmutationExperimental Facility MYRRHA/FASTEF working in subcritical mode and in critical mode.Reactor physics experiments aim to validate a methodology for on-line subcriticalitymonitoring. For this purpose, building on the former activities accomplished in the previousFP6 project GUINEVERE, investigations on the subcritical VENUS-F (lead/uranium) corescoupled with the GENEPI-3C accelerator will be extended. This activity has been planned inwithin the framework of the on-going FREYA (Fast Reactor Experiments for hYbridApplications) FP7 project. This paper presents the current progress of the project and thefuture plans.

It describes the results obtained when Pulsed Neutron Source experiments are analysed using the so called Area Method, in order to estimate the reactivity of a few sub-critical configurations of the VENUS-F reactor, around keff= 0.96. First the GUINEVERE facility is described. Then, following general considerations on the Area method, the results of its application to the neutron population time decrease spectra measured after a pulse by several fission chambers spread out over the whole reactor are discussed. It will couple a versatile neutron source to the VENUS-F lead core at the SCK*CEN site in Mol (Belgium). It is based on an electrostatic accelerator generating 14 MeV neutrons by bombarding a deuteron beam on a tritium target located in the reactor core. A new accelerator has been developed. It will produce alternatively 1 μs 250 keV deuteron pulses with adjustable repetition rate (40 mA peak), as well as continuous beam (1 mA) with programmable interruptions. Beam will be inserted vertically into the reactor core. The accelerator is designed to enable the vertical section of the beam line to be easily lifted out the reactor bunker for maintenance operations, target changes and core loading procedures. This paper will describe the design of the accelerator and its commissioning in Grenoble (France), before its transfer to the Belgian site. CD Series IAEA-13-CN-173 ISBN 9789201504104; International audience; GUINEVERE, Generator-of-Uninterrupted-Intense-NEutrons-at-the-lead-VEnus-REactor, is a project of the Domain 2 of the FP6 EUROTRANS Integrated Project devoted to Accelerator Driven System (ADS) feasibility studies. Domain 2, ECATS, is related to specific Experiments for Coupling an Accelerator, a Target and a Subcritical core. GUINEVERE will investigate on-line reactivity monitoring, sub-criticality determination and operational procedures in an ADS. The project consists in coupling a modified VENUS facility at the SCK-CEN site in Mol (Belgium) to an upgraded GENEPI neutron source. SCK-CEN is transforming the water moderated VENUS reactor into a fast lead core facility, the fuel and lead rodlets being provided by CEA. The GEnerator-of-NEutrons-Pulsed-and-Intense is an electrostatic accelerator generating 14 MeV neutrons by bombarding a high intensity deuteron beam on a tritium target located in the reactor core. CNRS is designing and building a new accelerator, GENEPI-3C, to meet the new requirements of the experimental program: it will be capable of delivering alternatively 1 μs long deuteron pulses with adjustable repetition rate, as well as continuous beam with programmable interruptions. Abstract

International audience; The GUINEVERE project is running since 2007 and is part of the EUROTRANS Integrated Project of the 6th EURATOM Framework Programme. It consists first in the construction of a lead fast ADS mock-up at SCK-CEN Mol (Belgium) for the purpose of ADS subcriticality monitoring experiments, and beyond in support to the design of a Transmutation Experimental Facility (MYRRHA/FASTEF). To do so the VENUS reactor (SCK-CEN) will be coupled with a new GENEPI neutron source under construction by CNRS (France). To accommodate this new source (a 250 keV deuteron accelerator) in a vertical coupling configuration, the VENUS building is being heightened. In parallel the reactor core is being modified to be loaded with fuel assemblies made of enriched Uranium and solid Lead moderator pins, and hold radial and axial Lead reflectors. A new safety and control rod system is also under development. The new GENEPI-3C neutron source is designed to be operated in pulsed mode but also in continuous mode to investigate the current-to-flux reactivity indicator in representative conditions of a powerful ADS. In this latter mode it will be also possible to make short beam interruptions at a fixed frequency to have access to the neutron population decrease as a function of time. The vertical beam line will have the distinctive feature to be retractile, allowing target changing or complete removal (for critical configuration for example). The accelerator will be first completely assembled at LPSC Grenoble for beam characterization before to be transferred in Mol. We will present in this paper the status of this experimental facility assembling, and foreseen experimental programmes in the framework of fast transmutation system studies.

To accommodate the accelerator in a vertical coupling configuration, the VENUS building is being heightened. The fast core will be loaded with enriched Uranium and will be moderated and reflected with solid lead (zero power experiment). For the purpose of the experimental programme, the neutron source has to be operated not only in pulsed mode but also in continuous mode to investigate the current-to-flux reactivity indicator in representative conditions of a powerful ADS. In this latter mode it is also required to make short beam interruptions to have access to the neutron population decrease as a function of time: from this spectrum it will be possible to apply different analysis techniques such as "prompt decay" fitting techniques and "source jerk" techniques. Beam interruptions will be repeated at a programmable frequency to improve time spectra statistics. Different sub-criticality levels (keff=0.99, 0.97, 0.95, ...) will be investigated in order to obtain a full set of data points for the final overall validation of the methodology. This paper describes the status of the experimental facility assembling, and the foreseen experimental programme to be started.

Proc. on CD Rom log315; International audience; The GUINEVERE project is an international project in the framework of IP-EUROTRANS, the FP6 program which aims at addressing the main issues for ADS development in the framework of partitioning and transmutation for nuclear waste volume and radiotoxicity reduction. The GUINEVERE project is carried out in the context of domain 2 of IP-EUROTRANS, ECATS, devoted to specific experiments for the coupling of an accelerator, a target and a subcritical core. These experiments should provide an answer to the questions of online reactivity monitoring, sub-criticality determination and operational procedures (loading, start-up, shutdown, …) in an ADS by 2009-2010. The project has the objective to couple a fast lead core, within the VENUS building operated by the SCK•CEN, with a neutron generator able to work in three different modes: pulsed, continuous and continuous with beam interruptions at the millisecond scale. In order to achieve this goal, the VENUS facility has to be adapted and a modified GENEPI-3C accelerator has to be designed and constructed. The paper describes the main modifications to the reactor core and facility and to the accelerator, which will be executed during the years 2008 and 2009, and the experimental programme which will start in 2009.

International audience; This paper provides a link between the MUSE (MUltiplication avec SourceExterne) program performed at CEA-Cadarache in France, and the TRADE(TRiga Accelerator Driven Experiment) program performed at ENEA-Casacciain Italy. In both programs, extensive measurements were made to determinethe best methods for sub-criticality measurements in an accelerator-driven system.A very serious attempt was made to quantify the uncertainties associatedwith such measurements. While both MUSE and TRADE studied the methodsof sub-criticality determination, in fact the two systems are very different.MUSE was a fast system with MOX fuel (generation time around 0.5 μs), andTRADE was performed in a TRIGA reactor (generation time around 50 μs).This paper will summarize the important results of these two experiments,with the main purpose being to tie them together to attempt to draw genericconclusions that can be applied in the future to a real ADS.In addition, this paper will briefly discuss the next series of experiments thatwill continue this work in the U.S. (RACE, Reactor Accelerator Coupled Experiments),Belarus (YALINA), Belgium (GUINEVERE), and Russia (SAD,Sub-critical Assembly Dubna). MUSE and TRADE have contributed greatlyto our understanding of the uncertainties associated with sub-critical measurements,but there are still some gaps that must be covered. This paper willdescribe the gaps that exist, and demonstrate how the above future programswill fill in the missing information needed for the design of an actual ADSsystem in the future.

Abstract

Miniature fission chambers are tools suited for instrumenting experimental reactors, allowing online and in-core neutron measurements of quantities such as fission rates or reactor power. A new set of such detectors was produced by CEA to be used for the next experimental program at the EOLE facility starting in 2013. Some of these detectors will be employed in pulse mode for absolute measurements, which require calibration. The calibration factor is expressed in mass units and is thus called “effective mass”. A calibration campaign was conducted in December 2012 at the SCK\bulletCEN BR1 facility within the framework of the scientific cooperation VEP (VENUS-EOLE-PROTEUS) between SCK\bulletCEN, CEA and PSI. In order to improve the calibration method, two steps were taken. First, a new characterisation of the thermal flux cavity and the MARK3 neutron flux conversion device carried out by SCK\bulletCEN allowed using calculated effective cross sections for determining detectors effective masses. Dosimetry irradiations were performed in situ in order to determine the neutron flux level and provide a link to the metrological standard. Second, two fission chambers were also calibrated at the CEA CALIBAN reactor (fast neutron spectrum) using the same method so that the results could be compared with the results obtained at the SCK\bulletCEN. This paper proposes to present both the calibration method and recent improvements on uncertainty reduction and biases evaluation. Abstract

Miniature fission chambers are suited tools for instrumenting experimental reactors, allowing online and in-core neutron measurements of quantities such as fission rates or reactor power. A new set of such detectors was produced by CEA to be used during the next experimental program at the E facility starting in 2013. Some of these detectors will be employed in pulse mode for absolute measurements, thus requiring calibration. The calibration factor is expressed in mass units and thus called “effective mass”. A calibration campaign was conducted in December 2012 at the SCK·CEN BR1 facility within the framework of the scientific cooperation VEP (VENUS-E-PROTEUS) between SCK·CEN, CEA and PSI. Two actions were conducted in order to improve the calibration method. First a new characterisation of the thermal flux cavity and the MARK3 neutron flux conversion device performed by SCK·CEN allowed using calculated effective cross sections for determining detectors effective masses. Dosimetry irradiations were performed in situ in order to determine the neutron flux level and provide link to the metrological standard. Secondly two fission chambers were also calibrated at the CEA CALIBAN reactor (fast neutron spectrum), using the same method so that the results can be compared with the results obtained at the SCK·CEN. In this paper the calibration method and recent improvements on uncertainty reduction are presented. The results and uncertainties obtained in the two reactors CALIBAN and BR1 are compared and discussed.

Abstract

International audience; In the framework of the GUINEVERE (EUROTRANS-IP FP6) and FREYA (FP7) projects, a two-level procedure is developed to measurethe time variations of an ADS reactivity ρ(t). First, the time variations of the reactor power and neutron source intensity are monitored online,allowing to extract the fast fluctuations of ρ(t) around a reference value. Then, absolute measurements of ρ are periodically performed toreadjust the relative measurements. These calibration measurements require the analysis of the decay of the neutron population triggeredby programmed beam interruptions. In this paper, we describe an innovative method developed to measure the prompt multiplicationfactor, kp, of a subcritical reactor (and therefore its absolute ρ). Unlike conventional methods used for reactivity measurements, ourapproach only relies on the prompt decay of the neutron population, therefore enabling the use of shorter beam interruptions (< 50 μs) thanusual (~ 1 ms). After a review of the method’s mechanics, we apply it to measurements performed at the GUINEVERE facility, with theVENUS-F reactor, a zero power lead subcritical fast reactor. During these measurements, the neutron source was operated in pulsemode. Our results, promising, are compared with reference reactivity values provided by a MSM analysis.
