With little knowledge on the joint effects of metal exposure on dyslipidemia, we aimed to investigate the relationship between exposure to metal and dyslipidemia among U.S adults based on the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey(NHANES). Based on the five NHANES waves(2011-2020), we selected five metals in blood as exposure, namely, Cadmium(Cd), Lead(Pb), Total Mercury(Hg), Manganese(Mn) and Selenium(Se), which were detected by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Survey-multivariable logistic regression, Generalized Weighted Quantile Sum(WQS) and Bayesian kernel machine regression(BKMR) were performed to determine whether dyslipidemia was associated with single metals or mixed metals. Our study included 12,526 participants aged from 20 to 80, representing 577.1 million non-institutionalized U.S. adults. We found a positive association between several metals including Pb [Adjusted odds ratio(AOR)=1.332, 95%CI:1.165, 1.522], Total Hg(AOR=1.264, 95%CI:1.120, 1.427), Mn(AOR=1.181, 95%CI:1.046, 1.334) and Se(AOR=1.771, 95%CI:1.576, 1.992) and dyslipidemia. According to the WQS approach, metal mixtures were positively associated with dyslipidemia(AOR:1.310, 95%CI: 1.216, 1.411) after a full-model adjustment. As is shown in the BKMR model, mixed metals tended to be positively associated with dyslipidemia ratios in a significant manner. Females, non-Hispanic white populations, people aged over 60 and those who did a little physical activity had a greater risk for dyslipidemia. Our findings suggest metals including Cd, Pb, Hg, Mn and Se and their combinations may adversely affect dyslipidemia among U.S adults. Due to the cross-sectional nature of the study, it is possible that reverse causation may exist.

Lacticaseibacillus casei LH23 is a strain isolated from traditional fermented food and had been demonstrate to ameliorate DSS-induced colitis in mice. In the present study, effects of Lacticaseibacillus casei LH23 on cervical cancer cells were investigated. Supernatants of lysates and heat-inactivated Lacticaseibacillus casei LH23 were found to inhibit the expression of human papillomavirus genes E6/E7 which is the main causative factor of cervical cancer. With MTT, EdU staining, and TUNEL staining assays, Lacticaseibacillus casei LH23 was shown to suppress the proliferation and induced the apoptosis of cervical cancer cells. Additionally, with wound-healing and Western-blot assays, Lacticaseibacillus casei LH23 was shown to slowdown the migration of cervical cancer cells and altered the expression of metastasis-related genes. These results demonstrated the anti-cervical cancer potential of Lacticaseibacillus casei LH23.

Oleanolic acid (OA) is a five-ring triterpenoid compound, which is widely present in plants. Due to a wide range of pharmacological activities, oleanolic acid has attracted more and more attention. However, oleanolic acid is insoluble in water and has low bioavailability, which limits its clinical application. In this review, we focus on summarizing the anti-cancer activity and mechanism of the A ring or C-28 carboxyl modified derivatives of OA since 2015, to determine the strength of its anti-cancer effectiveness and evaluate whether it could be used as a clinical anti-cancer drug.

Compared with the thin plate production process, the behavior of NbC precipitating would be different in thicker plate from the rolling processing due to reduction ratio conditions. The mechanism of epitaxial growth of NbC precipitating along with TiN particles was observed. The distribution of TiN particles, which influenced by N content in steels, would determine the distribution of the combined TiN + NbC particles by transmission electron microscopy. TiN particle is a high-temperature precipitate. The TiN particle is precipitated completely before the NbC particle is precipitated. It is concluded that the distribution of TiN was most important factor to control austenite grain size by Zener drag force. When the N content was higher in the steel would result in the coarser TiN particles which are harmful to controlling the size in roughing. Increasing of N content did not lead to an increase in the Zener drag force to control austenite grain size.

Two metal coordination polymers, namely {[Ni(H2O)2(1,3-BIP)2] ⋅ TFBDC}n (I), {[Cu3(H2O)4(1,3-BIP)6] ⋅ (BTC)2 ⋅ (H2O)15}n (II), (1,3-BIP is 1,3-bis(imidazole)propane, H2TFBDC is 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoroterephthalic acid and H3BTC is 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid) were prepared under solvothermal conditions and characterized by single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, IR spectra and elemental analyses. The single crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that MCP I exhibits a 1D loop-like chain structure, which are further linked by intermolecular hydrogen bonding to form a 3D supermolecular architecture. Meanwhile, MCP II exhibits a 2D layer with (4,4) topology. Furthermore, the stability properties of MCPs I and II were also investigated.

Objective: This study aims to evaluate the diagnostic value of optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) in detecting the choroidal neovascularization (CNV) in age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis was performed by searching Pubmed, Science Direct, Embase, and Web of Science. The pooled sensitivity and specificity with 95% confidence intervals (CIs), area under the summary receiver operator characteristic curve (sROC), and the total accurate classification rate were used to evaluate OCTA’s diagnostic value of CNV in AMD patients. Results: Seven studies involving 517 eyes were included in the analysis. The mean age of subjects in each study ranged from 58.5 years to 81.7 years. Fluorescein angiography was applied as the gold standard in 5 studies. There were 350 eyes diagnosed with CNV, OCTA detected 301 eyes correctly, while among the 167 eyes without CNV, OCTA identified 150 correctly. The total accurate classification rate was 87.23%. The Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient was 0.5, indicating that there was no significant threshold effect in the current study (S = 8, p = 0.103). The pooled sensitivity and pooled specificity were 0.89 (95% CI: 0.82, 0.94) and 0.96 (95% CI: 0.85, 1.00), respectively. The area under sROC was up to 0.911. Conclusion: The specificity of OCTA for the detection of CNV in AMD patients is extremely high; however, the sensitivity still needs to be improved. In general, the meta-analysis revealed that OCTA had a high diagnostic value for the detection of CNV in AMD patients.

The composition of wastewater containing heavy metal mixtures is often complex and poses a serious threat to human and environmental health. Effective removal of a variety of heavy metal ions with a single technology is challenging, and the conventional split integrated technologies require multi-step processing and a massive footprint. For the first time, we achieve hierarchically integrating ion exchange and nanofiltration into all-in-one "iNF" membranes. The iNF membrane has a hierarchical structure with an interfacial polymerization layer and an ion exchange layer, which can achieve highly efficient indiscriminate heavy metal ion removal, overcoming the defect that traditional nanofiltration membranes can only remove single metal cations or oxyanions. The ion exchange layer can remove heavy metal ions through sulfonic acid groups and quaternary amine groups. In addition, the ion exchange layer can be regenerated by electro-deionization, which is meaningful for sustainable membrane usage. This facile, scalable, and compact integrated process shows outstanding potential and universal applicability in complex wastewater treatment.

Thirty-eight disulfides containing N-arylacetamide were designed and synthesized in an effort to develop novel urease inhibitors. Biological evaluation revealed that some of the synthetic compounds exhibited strong inhibitory potency against both cell-free urease and urease in intact cell with low cytotoxicity to mammalian cells even at concentration up to 250 µM. Of note, 2,2'-dithiobis(N-(2-fluorophenyl)acetamide) (d7), 2,2'-dithiobis(N-(3,5-difluorophenyl)acetamide) (d24), and 2,2'-dithiobis(N-(3-fluorophenyl)acetamide) (d8) were here identified as the most active inhibitors with IC50 of 0.074, 0.44, and 0.81 µM, showing 32- to 355-fold higher potency than the positive control acetohydroxamic acid. These disulfides were confirmed to bind urease without covalent modification of the cysteine residue and to inhibit urease reversibly with a mixed inhibition mechanism. They also showed very good anti-Helicobacter pylori activities with d8 showing a comparable potency to the clinical used drug amoxicillin. The impressive in vitro biological profile indicated their immense potential as therapeutic agents to tackle H. pylori caused infections.

Abstract: Urease is an attractive drug target for designing anti-infective agents against pathogens such as Helicobacter pylori, Proteus mirabilis, and Ureaplasma urealyticum. In the past century, hundreds of medicinal chemists focused their efforts on explorations of urease inhibitors. Despite the FDA’s approval of acetohydroxamic acid as a urease inhibitor for the treatment of struvite nephro-lithiasis and the widespread use of N-(n-butyl)thiophosphoric triamide as a soil urease inhibitor as nitrogen fertilizer synergists in agriculture, urease inhibitors with high potency and safety are urgently needed. Exploration of novel urease inhibitors has therefore become a hot research topic recently. Herein, inhibitors identified worldwide from 2016 to 2021 have been reviewed. They structurally belong to more than 20 classes of compounds such as urea/thioure analogues, hydroxamic acids, sul-fonamides, metal complexes, and triazoles. Some inhibitors showed excellent potency with IC50 val-ues lower than 10 nM, having 10000-fold higher potency than the positive control thiourea.

Myoepithelial tumors of soft tissue are uncommon neoplasms characterized histologically by spindle to epithelioid cells arranged in cords, nests, and/or reticular pattern with chondromyxoid to hyaline stroma, and genetically by rearrangement involving EWSR1 (among other less common genes) in about half of the cases. The diagnosis often requires immunostaining to confirm myoepithelial differentiation, most importantly the expression of epithelial markers and S100 protein and/or GFAP. However, there are cases wherein the morphology is reminiscent of myoepithelial tumors, while the immunophenotype falls short. Here, we report 2 highly similar myoepithelioma-like tumors arising in the hands of young adults. Both tumors were well-demarcated and composed of alternating cellular areas with palely eosinophilic hyaline stroma and scattered acellular zones of densely eosinophilic collagen deposition. The tumor cells were mainly epithelioid cells and arranged in cords or small nests. Vacuolated cells encircling hyaline matrix globules were focally prominent. A minor component of nonhyaline fibrous nodular areas composed of bland spindle cells and rich vasculature was also observed. Perivascular concentric spindle cell proliferation and perivascular hyalinization were present in some areas. The tumor cells were positive for CD34 and epithelial membrane antigen (focal) by immunostaining, while largely negative for cytokeratin, S100, GFAP, p63, GLUT1, and claudin-1. By RNA sequencing, a novel OGT-FOXO3 fusion gene was identified in case 1 and confirmed by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction and fluorescence in situ hybridization in both cases. Sharing the unusual clinicopathologic features and the novel fusion, these 2 cases probably represent a distinct tumor entity, whose relationship with myoepithelial tumors and tumorigenic mechanisms exerted by the OGT-FOXO3 fusion remain to be studied.

Purification and recovery of polar organic solvents such as dimethylformamide (DMF) with high chemical separation speed and low energy cost nanofiltration membranes has been widely investigated, while it is still a difficult challenge that high permeability of solvents and rejection of solutes are achieved simultaneously. In this study, a novel organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) membranes was obtained via coating a thin selective graphene oxide (GO) layer on top of the polyimide porous substrate (PI) which was cross-linked to improve the stability in polar solvents. The resultant GO/cross-linked PI (GO/CLPI) composite membranes feature remarkable sieving capability of >94% for RBss molecules (1018 Da), accompanying high pure solvent permeability of 11.1 L h−1 m−2 bar−1, 4.9 L h−1 m−2 bar−1 and 1.0 L h−1 m−2 bar−1 for water, IPA and DMF, respectively. Different from conventional method of characterization, low field nuclear magnetic resonance technology (LF-NMR) was utilized to confirm that the GO/CLPI membrane shows a higher adsorption capacity for IPA than DMF. This newly technique can be effectively utilized to evaluate the affinity between organic solvents and the surface of membranes.

Lithocarpus polystachyus Rehd. known as Sweet Tea in China has attracted lots of interest for its good hypoglycemic effect and the potential as a hypoglycemic agent. Based on affinity separation-UPLC-Q-TOF-MS/MS, 54 potential α-glucosidase inhibitiors were identified and 44 were structurally determined. Out of them, 41 were identified for the first time from this plant including flavonoids, fatty acids, triterpenes, alkaloids, and coumarins. Enzyme assays revealed that flavonoids exhibited higher inhibitory activity against α-glucosidase than others with astilbin (IC50 = 6.14 μg·mL−1), morin (IC50 = 8.46 μg·mL−1), and naringenin (IC50 = 10.03 μg·mL−1) showing 2- to 4-fold higher potency than the positive control acarbose. They were proved as reversible inhibitors with mixed inhibition mechanism. K i ( K i ' ) values and molecular dockings strongly supported the potency order of astilbin, morin and naringenin that showed in the enzyme assays.

Simple Summary This study highlights the epidemiological, cytogenetic and clinical difference between patients with multiple hit diffuse large B-cell lymphoma in Taiwan and those from western countries. Unlike in the West, the majority of patients with multiple hit lymphoma in Taiwan harbor a BCL6 rearrangement. Almost three in every five BCL6-rearranged double hit lymphoma cases in Taiwan are non-GCB phenotype, indicating, at least in part, that the preferential screening for double hit with BCL6 rearrangement may be a clinically-informative modality for patients with non-GCB phenotype DLBCL in Taiwan. This also suggests the need for a different treatment approach than is obtained in the West where BCL6 double hit lymphomas are seemingly GCB. Consistent with our present findings, mandatory screening for BCL6-rearrangement in suspected DLBCL cases in Taiwan may aid early diagnosis, therapy decision, and clinical outcome forecast. Abstract This study investigated the epidemiological and clinical peculiarities of BCL2 and BCL6 rearrangement in patients with high grade B-cell lymphoma (HGBL) from Taiwan, compared with data from Western countries. Two hundred and eighty-two DLBCL cases from Taipei Medical University-affiliated hospitals (n = 179) and Tri-Service General Hospital (n = 103) were enrolled for this study. From the 282, 47 (16.7%) had MYC translocation; 24 of these harbored concurrent BCL2 and/or BCL6 translocation (double-hit, DH or triple-hit, TH). Twelve DH-HGBL cases had simultaneous MYC and BCL6 translocations, 8 harbored MYC and BCL2 rearrangement, while the remaining 4 patients exhibited TH. Together, 66.7% of DH/TH-HGBL patients were BCL6 rearrangement positive. Among these BCL6-rearranged DH/TH-HGBL patients, only 6 (37.5%) overexpressed MYC and BCL6 proteins simultaneously, indicating that MYC-BCL6 co-overexpression may not be plausible surrogate biomarker for screening BCL6-rearranged DH-HGBL. By the end of year 5, all patients with TH-HGBL, BCL2 DH-HGBL and all but one BCL6 DH-HGBL cases had expired or were lost to follow-up. Progression-free survival (PFS) was longer for the non-DH/TH-HGBL group compared with the DH/TH-HGBL group. While the patients with BCL2 DH-HGBL were lost to follow-up by day 800, their remaining TH-HGBL and BCL6 DH-HGBL peers exhibited very poor PFS, regardless of age strata. More so, patients with BCL6 rearrangement were 5.5-fold more likely associated with extranodal involvement compared with their BCL2-rearranged peers. Moreover, ~60.0% of the BCL6-rearranged DH-HGBL cases were non-GCB, suggesting that including screening for BCL6 rearrangement in patients with the non-GCB phenotype may aid medical decision-making and therapeutic strategy. Contrary to contemporary data from western countries, 2 in every 3 patients with DH/TH-HGBL in Taiwan harbor BCL6 rearrangement. Consistent with present findings, we recommend mandatory screening for BCL6 rearrangement in patients with aggressive HGBL in Taiwan.

Two metal coordination polymers, namely {[Co(MIBA)2]·2H2O}n (SNUT-3) and {[Cu(MIBA)2]·2H2O}n (SNUT-4), where HMIBA = 4-(1H-2-methylimidazol-1-yl)benzoic acid, were prepared by hydrothermal methods. Single-crystal X-ray analysis revealed that the structure of SNUT-3 exhibits a 3D→3D fourfold interpenetrating structure with diamondoid frameworks, while SNUT-4 shows a 2D + 2D → 3D inclined polycatenation structure. The gas adsorption property of SNUT-3 and photocatalytic activity of SNUT-4 for the degradation of Rhodamine B has been explored.

Dual-layer hollow fiber membranes, due to their significant advantages in material cost and structural design, have become increasingly attractive. However, one must conduct much more complex experiments including many spinning parameters than those conventional single-layer hollow fiber membranes in order to obtain a regular cross-section morphology and good adhesion between the two layers for long-term performance stability. Therefore this chapter not only introduces the mechanisms behind the delamination phenomenon, irregular morphology, and substructure resistance, but also summarizes the effects of various operating conditions in the spinning process which would help find the optimal parameters. Moreover, the existing applications of dual-layer hollow fiber membranes based on the state-of-the-art literature research are described.

The practical application of graphene oxide (GO)/polymer composite membranes requires addressing the poor long-term stability caused by exfoliation of GO laminates from the substrate, solvent dissolution of the substrate and fouling by organic pollutants. This study describes the concurrent cross-linking of GO laminates, a polyimide substrate and their interface through a single filtration step with multifunctional triethylenetetramine (TETA). The new strategy features the following advantages: (1) the improved free volume and tunable charge characteristic of GO laminates lead to higher acetonitrile permeance with precise molecular sieving properties over state-of-art organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) membranes; (2) the covalent bonding formed at the GO/polyimide interface and polyimide substrate endows the membrane with significantly enhanced stability in harsh environments; (3) the photocatalytic properties hold great potential for fouling reduction and dye decolorization.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the leading cause of bronchiolitis in young children, but there are few safe and effective treatments for this disease. Platycodonis Radix is widely used as an antitussive and expectorant drug for preventing various diseases in lower respiratory tract, in which the polysaccharides are one of the main bioactivity constituents. In this study, the protective effects of the P. Radix polysaccharides (PRP) against RSV-induced bronchiolitis in juvenile mice and RSV-induced apoptosis of epithelial HEp-2 cells were investigated. The results showed that PRP obviously decreased the levels of IL-1β, IL-4, IL-6, TNF-α, IFN-γ and TSLP in lung tissues, and reduced the number of inflammatory cells in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) of RSV-infected mice. Furthermore, it reduced the apoptosis of RSV-infected HEp-2 cells and remarkably inhibited the mRNA expressions of RSV L gene, which indicated that PRP affected transcription and replication of RSV in host cells. Compared with that in RSV-infected group, miR-181a-5p in the PRP-treated group presented the highest relative abundance and its expression was violently reduced by approximately 30%. Mechanistically, PRP had the similar effects as miR-181a-5p antagomir on RSV-induced apoptosis and inflammation in HEp-2 cells via upregulating BCL2, MLL3 and SIRT1, which could be reversed by miR-181a-5p mimic. Therefore, it demonstrated that PRP not only protected against RSV-induced lung inflammation in mice but also inhibited apoptosis of RSV-infected HEp-2 cells via suppressing miR-181a-5p and transcriptionally activating Hippo and SIRT1 pathways.
