Abstract Background Biological sciences are characterised not only by an increasing amount but also the extreme complexity of its data. This stresses the need for efficient ways of integrating these data in a coherent description of biological systems. In many cases, biological data needs organization before integration. This is not seldom a collaborative effort, and it is thus important that tools for data integration support a collaborative way of working. Wiki systems with support for structured semantic data authoring, such as Semantic MediaWiki, provide a powerful solution for collaborative editing of data combined with machine-readability, so that data can be handled in an automated fashion in any downstream analyses. Semantic MediaWiki lacks a built-in data import function though, which hinders efficient round-tripping of data between interoperable Semantic Web formats such as RDF and the internal wiki format. Results To solve this deficiency, the RDFIO suite of tools is presented, which supports importing of RDF data into Semantic MediaWiki, with metadata needed to export it again in the same RDF format, or ontology. Additionally, the new functionality enables mash-ups of automated data imports combined with manually created data presentations. The application of the suite of tools is demonstrated by importing drug discovery related data about rare diseases from Orphanet and acid dissociation constants from Wikidata. The RDFIO suite of tools is freely available for download via pharmb.io/project/rdfio . Conclusions Through a set of biomedical demonstrators, it is demonstrated how the new functionality enables a number of usage scenarios where the interoperability of SMW and the wider Semantic Web is leveraged for biomedical data sets, to create an easy to use and flexible platform for exploring and working with biomedical data.

Electronic documentation ,Mediawiki ,Scientifc metadata ,ELN ,data management - Abstract
For data publications a description as complete as possible for the data set creation is the goal. The more devices are involved the more parameters and settings have to be documented. Electronic lab documentation can support the user to reach that goal. It is more than just an Electronic Lab Notebook (ELN). It is the integration into an ecosystem of different software. By connecting all the device interfaces all the parameters and settings can be automated documented. The scientist should enter values only once e.g. parameters in some experiment control software or project information at project proposal. Everything is collect and connected by the electronic lab documentation, which can be extended by manual notes. The documentation occurs in a structured manner, which makes the publication process easier, e.g. pre-fill from the project proposal. For the data publication the published data then includes not only the data and project information, it will be extended by all meta data known to the specific data set, which is linked within the electronic lab documentation.

Environments for collaborative work and social networking are increasingly complex. There is a clear need for these environments to provide support for semantics. This report discusses work on semantic annotation and interoperability for such environments that began in a hackathon at the Ontology Summit 2014. Our hackathon was primarily concerned with developing semantic tools for the Ontolog Community Wiki, but applies to ecosystems that involve many tools and environments. The hackathon spawned subsequent work that is of independent interest, including the development of an ontology mapping tool for customizing generic repository software for more specific purposes. Wikis have been recently promoted as tools that foster collaborative learning. However, there has been little research devoted to the criteria that are suitable to address issues pertinent to collaborative learning. This paper proposes a set of criteria to explore technical and pedagogical usability issues of collaborative learning with wikis. The criteria are then used to evaluate students' collaborative writing activities. The units of study are wikis that groups of students developed collaboratively using MediaWiki. This paper also reports on technical and pedagogical implications for the use of wikis as collaborative learning tools in teacher education.

The documentation compiled by the Recueil général des monuments sculptés en France pendant le Haut Moyen âge research teams is kept in the Sculpture Department of the Musée du Louvre. There are plans to transform it into a database. This “dematerialisation” requires long and meticulous preparatory work. First, it is necessary to have an overall view of the collection that, moreover, bears witness to the systematic working methods that predate the development of information technology. Then the documents to be digitised must be selected and prepared. Four different methods of putting the documents online using the MediaWiki tool may be envisaged, in the hope of ensuring interoperability between the SATHMA database, which is supplemented by CARE and other heritage databases.

Introduction The popularity of wikis has increased in the last few years, particularly in education. By allowing collaboration and information sharing, wikis can be used as a tool for lifelong learning. Health Informatics, as a field in permanent transformation, offers particular challenges that can be better tackled if access to centralized information and support to collaboration is possible. By adding semantics' strengths to wikis' features, such thing is possible. Aim This paper aims to present the development of a Semantic Media Wiki on Health Informatics - aprendI S: a place for information and knowledge sharing, and virtual collaboration of the Portuguese speaking community. Methods A survey has been conducted on students and teachers in health informatics in Portugal and Brazil to evaluate the need for a wiki in health informatics and to assess the most important subjects to address in such a platform, and a first structure of the Semantic Media Wiki was developed, based on the opinion of the respondents. Results Results show that more than half of 11% of respondents are interested in contributing with content and in using the wiki, and that there is a consensus in what the respondents expect to find in the wiki: the most voted subject was Health Information Systems. Conclusion According to the survey conducted, students and teachers of Health Informatics are definitely interested in a Semantic Media Wiki such as aprendI S. Our proposal builds such a tool according to the needs and wants of those students and teachers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The organisation of corporate wikis tends to deteriorate as time goes by. Rearranging categories, structuring articles and even moving sections among articles are cumbersome tasks in current wiki engines. This discourages the layman. But, it is the layman who writes the articles, knows the wiki content and detects refactoring opportunities. Our goal is to improve the refactoring affordances of current wiki engines by providing an alternative front-end tuned to refactoring. This is achieved by (1) surfacing the structure of the wiki corpus as a mind map, and (2) conducting refactoring as mind map reshaping. To this end, we introduceWikiWhirl, a domain-specific language for wiki refactoring.WikiWhirlis supported as an extension ofFreeMind, a popular mind mapping tool. In this way, refactoring operations are intuitively conducted as actions upon mind map nodes. In a refactoring session a user imports the wiki structure as aFreeMindmap; next, conducts the refactoring operations on the map, and finally, the effects are saved in the wiki database. The operational semantics of theWikiWhirloperations follow refactoring good practices (e.g., authorship preservation). Results from a controlled experiment suggest thatWikiWhirloutperformsMediaWikiin three main affordance enablers: understandability, productivity and fulfillment of refactoring good practices. The very nature of wiki-based collaborative writing around a topic-related content is the interaction of wiki functionality, content, and collaborative learning, and how the functionality is used to create the content collaboratively. This way of looking at wikis provides a theoretical model that helps researchers and educators to identify a number of category actions that can be carried out on wikis when students perform collaborative writing activities. This work aims at using the proposed model to evaluate the impacts of MediaWiki on collaborative writing among students in teacher education. Pedagogical implications are drawn from the results and future research actions are envisaged to enhance the quality of wiki-based collaborative writing in teacher education. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Wiki technology provides new opportunities to foster collaborative learning in various educational settings. To empirically examine the impact of wikis on learning, this article explores students' collaborative writing activities performed on MediaWiki. The activities were analyzed using a taxonomy with ten categories (clarify content, add content, delete content, add link, delete link, fix link, grammar, spelling, style/typography, and formatting). The work also analyses students' comments posted on the discussion page of the wiki. The results show important differences in the types of contributions across the categories investigated. The results also reveal that the level of collaboration and discussion was relatively low compared with other activities performed on the wiki. Finally, the article suggests a number of factors influencing wiki-based collaborative writing in teacher education. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Technology is changing and at a very rapid pace. New tools are being developed and coming to the forefront on almost a daily basis. Instructor -- led workshops that train faculty and students in the use of new tools can be expensive propositions for educational institutions. Scalability and ensuring uniformity in delivery of content become challenges. To address the problem of making the training cost-effective and to facilitate self-paced, independent learning in large groups, EnhanceEdu employed three different training approaches to provide hands-on workshops in the use of the open source tool, MediaWiki, to an audience of students and teachers from various colleges in India. This paper describes the three approaches employed in conducting the hands-on workshops. It also determines the factors that contribute toparticipants' engagement in learning and the likelihood that they will continue to use the new tool. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Wikis are widely considered as collaborative writing tools that foster collaborative writing. Most studies that report on wiki capabilities to support collaborative writing are based on students' subjective perceptions, which are not reliable enough to measure the degree and level of contribution to the wiki. A more reliable method is the data log generated by wikis, which tracks all actions and activities performed by each student and stores all previous versions of the wiki. This data log is of considerable interest and inherently more reliable to collect and analyze collaborative writing activities than students' subjective perceptions. Using MediaWiki as a platform, this work reports on the evaluation of the data logs created by wikis as students perform collaborative writing projects. The results are critically discussed and some pedagogical implications are drawn for collaborative writing in teacher education. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Wiki is a one of the most effective collaborative authoring tool which comes with Web 2.0. They bring about new vision to group work and help to take place in online learning environments rapidly. Although there is a great potential for learning environments, assessment process is time consuming and difficult if conventional methods are used. In this study, the purpose is to develop a tool to measure the author contribution in collaborative work within a wiki environment. By means of the developed tool it is possible to lessen time and energy to assess these contributions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

E-learning is not only a tool for knowledge management and the efficient development of cognitive qualities but also promotes interactivity and community building. Wiki software in particular is useful in the process of education for building independent learning spaces to which students contribute, and it supports the social aspects of the teaching/learning process. The communicative features of wiki are the subject of the research regarding the added value of e-learning compared to traditional goals stated in educational theories. The article begins by briefly reviewing this Web 2.0 tool in terms of its educational potential. It presents a case study of HE e-learning courses where the technical properties of different environments in Web 2.0 are linked to the specific need for an interdisciplinary approach to education for sustainable development. The educational objectives of the course are closely linked to the specific character of sustainable development (which is considered to be a social process based on multi-stakeholder communication rather than the sum of diverse political activities) and critical social theory, particularly the theory of communicative action which has emancipatory consequences for those involved. In the educational sphere, these goals are supported by the selection of "group oriented software" which promotes creativity in the context of academic writing on diverse themes. This supports action competence development and provides diverse communication opportunities which foster students' relationship building. The complex aim of the learning project presented in the article is the building of an extensive educational wiki electronic encyclopedia by students' contributions, through their collaboration on diverse environmental subjects. This learning space provides a knowledge base of easily accessible information for students' different assignments and practical work and is designed to support individual expression; by their contribution to this learning environment students feel part of the knowledge generation community. Contributions are evaluated according to their quality and pages are allocated varying statuses expressed by the level of copyright -some can be continuously upgraded by specialists or by new generations of students. The communicative aspect of learning is easy to trace in the wiki "discussion" option and can be mapped in the history of the page; thus qualitative evaluation is possible. Aspects such as flexibility in selecting the learning strategy and a creative approach present a real challenge for assessment, widely discussed in the literature. A peer review process conducted by students themselves and the quality of their discussion combined with the teacher's assessment is proposed as a contribution to this discussion. Students' interest in active work in the interactive electronic environment was investigated and positive results received. High quality results in terms of students' portfolios (essays and review discussions) provide evidence of usability of the presented pedagogical tool at university level. The article concludes with a review of our experiences with MediaWiki, useful for those interested in utilizing it as an educational tool. The use of electronic media and its potential link to the theory of communicative action in the educational context is briefly reflected upon. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article describes an experimental study that evaluated differences in students' discourse and actions when they used a wiki with discussion (i.e., an enhanced wiki) vs. a forum with attached MS Word documents for asynchronous collaboration on two case problems. The study used a counterbalanced within-subject design with 34 online learners working in small groups. A systematic content analysis of learners' interactions coupled with visual, analytical techniques showed within-group differences in using the technologies. The study revealed the expanding nature of a forum and the condensing nature of a wiki. Also, findings suggest that in a wiki, groups tend to be more collaborative, whereas in a threaded discussion, groups tend to be more cooperative. The study provides insights for instructors who use wikis and forums in their online courses to support collaborative problem-based activity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

[english] Problem: The new study regulation for medical licensing in Germany has caused significant reform of the medical curricula. At Munich University (LMU), the Medical Curriculum Munich (MeCuM) was introduced in 2004. More individual responsibility of the students regarding their academic goals as well as a problem-oriented thought process are essential features of the new curriculum. Through our project, an open web based platform for the design of curriculum-specific teaching and study material has become accessible to students and faculty of the MeCuM. Methods: Students created an online library in harmony with the curricular structure of the MeCuM. The technical implementation was carried out with the MediaWiki-Open-Source software. Contents can be edited from all students or faculty of the MeCuM in an anonymous or personalized manner. An online questionnaire was carried out to evaluate the project. Results: Our online library as a wiki is the first solution of this kind in medical education in Germany. The concept was implemented without technical difficulties and is linked to the official websites of LMU Munich. The website’s contents were visited 417,808 times from December 2005 through June 2007. Online-based evaluation showed that the project is positively recognized, and students are motivated to contribute actively. Discussion: The project closely reflects the academic curriculum of the MeCuM and creates additional opportunities for interaction between students and teachers. The design as an open source project allows easy handling as well as frequent control and ability to update the contents, but integrity and accuracy of the data content require further effort. Additional evaluation will be essential for improvements. The integration of faculty as reviewers and tutors is planned. Sustainability of the project is dependent upon continued student leadership. The concept of the project has been transferred to another medical school.

Due to the new possibilities they open up for collaborative writing in education, wikis have received much attention the last few years. As a result, teachers have used wikis to achieve various educational purposes, such as wikis for online courses, teacher evaluation, or class project. How-ever, the novelty and popularity of a technology do not automatically imply its suitability in educational settings. To evaluate the pedagogical effectiveness of wiki-based collaborative writing, there is a need for a theoretical framework that focuses on three essential elements of wikis and their relationships: technology, content, and group work. The framework was used to assess students' perceptions of wiki-based collaborative writing. Even though the results achieved so far are not as satisfactory as expected, the framework provides a promising way of looking at collaborative writing activities in a wiki-based environment. Based, on the results, the article reports on pedagogical implications of using wikis as collaborative writing tools in teacher education. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Broadly discussed in recent scientific papers, Mass Collaboration Systems (MC), enlist users who explicitly or implicitly collaborate to build a long-lasting artifact that is beneficial to the community. Wikis are systems that let users build artifacts and require users to edit and merge one another's inputs. Wiki's is a semi-closed world and the use and re-use of wiki's information by external non-humans agents are cumbersome tasks. The step from unstructured data but strongly connected information to structured data and annotated information is brought by adopting Semantic technologies into wikis. This paper presents a survey and comparative study of Semantic Wikis, with the emphasis on Semantic Media Wiki model and mechanisms and gives insight about the beneficial to use semantic wikis onto different scientific projects to share knowledge.
