Vehicular networks are expanding their applications for future sustainability. The reported increasing rate of data breaches through vehicular networks by Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) type of intrusion creates concern for such networks. Existing security solutions focus only on intrusion detection. However, prevention solutions are more proactive and provide security by probabilistic analysis. Existing prevention models for vehicular networks have low accuracy and are unable to handle zero-day attacks and advanced persistent threats. In this paper, we solve the problems mentioned above and introduce Predictive Risk Evaluation for Vehicular Infrastructure Resilience (PREVIR), the first amalgamated model of logit method (statistical analysis) and LogitBoost method (machine learning) to prevent DDoS attacks in vehicular networks. In PREVIR, the logit model predicts the packet probabilities for identifying maliciousness. The machine learning method improves PREVIR’s performance through iterative refinement of the model’s periodic updates based on new traffic parameters. We run a set of experiments on PREVIR. We use our NS3-generated dataset, NSL-KDD public dataset, and CIC-DDoS public dataset. PREVIR analyses multiple attack types, including UDP flood, TCP flood, mixed flooding, U2R, Probe, and R2L attacks. The results show that PREVIR classifies packets with accuracy up to 99.99%. Our proposed PREVIR model achieves a True Positive Ratio (TPR) up to 100% and an average False Positive Ratio (FPR) of 35%. The comparative analysis shows that PREVIR’s efficiency is 20% better on average in the prevention of malicious packets as compared to the state-of-the-art models.

While user authentication happens before initiating or resuming a login session, de-authentication detects the absence of a previously-authenticated user to revoke her currently active login session. The absence of proper de-authentication can lead to well-known lunchtime attacks, where a nearby adversary takes over a carelessly departed user’s running login session. The existing solutions for automatic de-authentication have distinct practical limitations, e.g., extraordinary deployment requirements or high initial cost of external equipment. In this paper, we propose “DE-authentication using Ambient Light sensor” (DEAL), a novel, inexpensive, fast, and user-friendly de-authentication approach. DEAL utilizes the built-in ambient light sensor of a modern computer to determine if the user is leaving her work-desk. DEAL, by design, is resilient to natural shifts in lighting conditions and can be configured to handle abrupt changes in ambient illumination (e.g., due to toggling of room lights). We collected data samples from 4800 sessions with 120 volunteers in 4 typical workplace settings and conducted a series of experiments to evaluate the quality of our proposed approach thoroughly. Our results show that DEAL can de-authenticate a departing user within 4 seconds with a hit rate of 89.15% and a fall-out of 7.35%. Finally, bypassing DEAL to launch a lunchtime attack is practically infeasible as it requires the attacker to either take the user’s position within a few seconds or manipulate the sensor readings sophisticatedly in real-time.

Abstract Cyber‐Physical Systems (CPSs) are becoming more automated and aimed to be as efficient as possible by enabling integration between their operations and Information Technology (IT) resources. In combination with production automation, these systems need to identify their assets and the correlation between them; any potential threats or failures alert the relevant user/department and suggest the appropriate remediation plan. Moreover, identifying critical assets in these systems is essential. With numerous research and technologies available, assessing IT assets nowadays can be straightforward to implement. However, there is one significant issue of evaluating operational technology critical assets since they have different characteristics, and traditional solutions cannot work efficiently. This study presents the necessary background to attain the appropriate approach for monitoring critical assets in CPSs' Situational Awareness (SA). Additionally, the study presents a broad survey supported by an in‐depth review of previous works in three important aspects. First, it reviews the applicability of possible techniques, tools and solutions that can be used to collect detailed information from such systems. Secondly, it covers studies that were implemented to evaluate the criticality of assets in CPSs, demonstrates requirements for critical asset identification, explores different risks and failure techniques utilised in these systems and delves into approaches to evaluate such methods in energy systems. Finally, this paper highlights and analyses SA gaps based on existing solutions, provides future directions and discusses open research issues.

The ubiquity of Android smartphones makes them targets of sophisticated malware, which maintain long-term stealth, particularly by offloading attack steps to benign apps. Such malware leaves little to no trace in logs, and the attack steps become difficult to discern from benign app functionality. Endpoint detection and response (EDR) systems provide live forensic capabilities that enable anomaly detection techniques to detect anomalous behavior in application logs after an app hijack. However, this presents a challenge, as state-of-the-art EDRs rely on device and third-party application logs, which may not include evidence of attack steps, thus prohibiting anomaly detection techniques from exposing anomalous behavior. While, theoretically, all the evidence resides in volatile memory, its ephemerality necessitates timely collection, and its extraction requires device rooting or app repackaging. We present VEDRANDO, an enhanced EDR for Android that accomplishes (i) the challenge of timely collection of volatile memory artefacts and (ii) the detection of a class of stealthy attacks that hijack benign applications. VEDRANDO leverages memory forensics and app virtualization techniques to collect timely evidence from memory, which allows uncovering attack steps currently uncollected by the state-of-the-art EDRs. The results showed that, with less than 5% CPU overhead compared to normal usage, VEDRANDO could uniquely collect and fully reconstruct the stealthy attack steps of ten realistic messaging hijack attacks using standard anomaly detection techniques, without requiring device or app modification.

In recent years, the use of Software Defined Networking (SDN) has increased due to various network management requirements. Using SDN in computer network applications has brought several benefits to users, including lower operational costs, better hardware management, flexibility, and centralized network deployment. On the other hand, the Internet of Things (IoT) is another rapidly growing technology. Distributed and dynamic infrastructures are two critical characteristics of IoT. These characteristics lead to some challenges while using SDN in IoT in terms of security and privacy. In this paper, we address security and privacy issues and solutions for SDN-based IoT systems. We analyze the techniques used for defense in previous works to achieve an acceptable level of security and privacy protection in SDN-based IoT systems. In the data plane, SDN-based IoT papers have considered hashing and encryption techniques, in the control plane, certificate authority and access control have been analyzed, and in the application plane, attack detection, and authentication have been discussed. We also provide a statistical analysis of the existing work. This analysis shows that researchers have focused on certain areas more than others in recent years. The final analysis also highlights issues that previous researchers have ignored.

Augmented and Virtual Reality (AR and VR), collectively known as Extended Reality (XR), are increasingly gaining traction thanks to their technical advancement and the need for remote connections, recently accentuated by the pandemic. Remote surgery, telerobotics, and virtual offices are only some examples of their successes. As users interact with XR, they generate extensive behavioral data usually leveraged for measuring human activity, which could be used for profiling users’ identities or personal information (e.g., gender). However, several factors affect the efficiency of profiling, such as the technology employed, the action taken, the mental workload, the presence of bias, and the sensors available. To date, no study has considered all of these factors together and in their entirety, limiting the current understanding of XR profiling. In this work, we provide a comprehensive study on user profiling in virtual technologies (i.e., AR, VR). Specifically, we employ machine learning on behavioral data (i.e., head, controllers, and eye data) to identify users and infer their individual attributes (i.e., age, gender). Toward this end, we propose a general framework that can potentially infer any personal information from any virtual scenarios. We test our framework on eleven generic actions (e.g., walking, searching, pointing) involving low and high mental loads, derived from two distinct use cases: an AR everyday application (34 participants) and VR robot teleoperation (35 participants). Our framework limits the burden of creating technology- and action-dependent algorithms, also reducing the experimental bias evidenced in previous work, providing a simple (yet effective) baseline for future works. We identified users up to 97% F1-score in VR and 80% in AR. Gender and Age inference was also facilitated in VR, reaching up to 82% and 90% F1-score, respectively. Through an in-depth analysis of sensors’ impact, we found VR profiling resulting more effective than AR mainly because of the eye sensors’ presence.

The increasing number of connected devices in the era of Internet of Thing (IoT) has also increased the number intrusions. Intrusion Detection System (IDS) is a secondary intelligent system to monitor, detect, and alert about malicious activities; an Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) is an extension of a detection system that triggers relevant action when an attack is suspected in a futuristic aspect. Both IDS and IPS systems are significant and useful for developing a security model. Several studies exist to review the detection and prevention models; however, the coherence in the opportunistic or advancements in the models is missing. Besides, the existing models also have some limitations, which need to be surveyed to develop new security models. Our survey is the first one to present a study of risk factor analysis using mapping technique, and provide a proposal for hybrid framework for an efficient security model for intrusion detection and/or prevention. We explore the importance of various Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based techniques, tools, and methods used for the detection and/or prevention systems in IoTs. More specifically, we emphasize on Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL) techniques for intrusion detection-prevention systems and provide a comparative analysis focusing on the feasibility, compatibility, challenges, and real-time issues. This present survey is beneficial for industry and academia to categorize the challenges and issues in the current security models and generate the new dimensions of developments of security frameworks with efficient ML or DL methods.

Due to its critical role in cybersecurity, digital forensics has received significant attention from researchers and practitioners alike. The ever increasing sophistication of modern cyberattacks is directly related to the complexity of evidence acquisition, which often requires the use of several technologies. To date, researchers have presented many surveys and reviews on the field. However, such articles focused on the advances of each particular domain of digital forensics individually. Therefore, while each of these surveys facilitates researchers and practitioners to keep up with the latest advances in a particular domain of digital forensics, the global perspective is missing. Aiming to fill this gap, we performed a qualitative review of all the relevant reviews in the field of digital forensics, determined the main topics on digital forensics topics and identified their main challenges. Despite the diversity of topics and methods, there are several common problems that are faced by almost all of them, with most of them residing in evidence acquisition and pre-processing due to counter analysis methods and difficulties of collecting data from devices, the cloud etc. Beyond pure technical issues, our study highlights procedural issues in terms of readiness, reporting and presentation, as well as ethics, highlighting the European perspective which is traditionally stricter in terms of privacy. Our extensive analysis paves the way for closer collaboration among researcher and practitioners among different topics of digital forensics.

The paper explores the impact of finance's penetration into agriculture and the global food system. The authors analyse the causes of the recent global food crises, unveiling the key role played by financial speculation and explaining why this phenomenon is likely to affect food security much more than the problems related to the supply and demand dynamics taking place in the “real economy”. Financial markets, it is argued, are engendering pricing mechanisms and dynamics of wealth distribution that have consequences on agrarian structures, but also on our daily life. While creating new profit opportunities for speculators and the agribusiness, the penetration of finance into food systems increase uncertainty and imply new risks for local actors, to the point of compromising their capability to respond to exogenous shocks, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. To make sense of these phenomena, they must be linked to the broader transformation of our global system and to the long-term trajectories of capitalist development. This operation is here made with the support of the analytical tools provided by some approaches inspired by the world-system analysis, bringing to light the roots of what can be defined as a “financialized food regime” and discussing some of its important ecological and socio-economic contradictions.

Xiaomi is the leading company in the fitness tracking industry. Successful attacks on its fitness tracking ecosystem would result in severe consequences, including the loss of sensitive health and personal data. Despite these relevant risks, we know very little about the security mechanisms adopted by Xiaomi. In this work, we uncover them and show that they are insecure. In particular, Xiaomi protects its fitness tracking ecosystem with custom application-layer protocols spoken over insecure Bluetooth Low-Energy (BLE) connections (ignoring standard BLE security mechanisms already supported by their devices) and TLS connections. We identify severe vulnerabilities affecting such proprietary protocols, including unilateral and replayable authentication. Those issues are critical as they affect all Xiaomi trackers released since 2016 and up-to-date Xiaomi companion apps for Android and iOS. We show in practice how to exploit the identified vulnerabilities by presenting six impactful attacks. Four attacks enable to wirelessly impersonate any Xiaomi fitness tracker and companion app, man-in-the-middle (MitM) them, and eavesdrop on their communication. The other two attacks leverage a malicious Android application to remotely eavesdrop on data from a tracker and impersonate a Xiaomi fitness app. Overall, the attacks have a high impact as they can be used to exfiltrate and inject sensitive data from any Xiaomi tracker and compatible app. We propose five practical and low-overhead countermeasures to mitigate the presented vulnerabilities. Moreover, we present breakmi, a modular toolkit that we developed to automate our reverse-engineering process and attacks. breakmi understands Xiaomi application-layer proprietary protocols, reimplements Xiaomi security mechanisms, and automatically performs our attacks. We demonstrate that our toolkit can be generalized by extending it to be compatible with the Fitbit ecosystem. We will open-source breakmi.

Vehicular networks allow billions of vehicular users to be connected to report and exchange real-time data for offering various services, such as navigation, ride-hailing, smart parking, traffic monitoring, and vehicular digital forensics. Fifth generation (5G) is a new radio access technology with greater coverage, accessibility, and higher network density. 5G-supported Vehicular Networks (5GVNs) have attracted plenty of attention from both academia and industry. Geared with new features, they are expected to revolutionize the mobility ecosystem to empower a portfolio of new services. Meanwhile, the development of such communication capabilities, along with the development of sensory devices and the enhancement of local computing powers, have lead to an inevitable reality of massive data (e.g., identity, location, and trajectory) collection from vehicular users. Unfortunately, 5GVN are still confronted with a variety of privacy threats. Such threats are targeted at users’ data, identity, location, and trajectory. If not properly handled, such threats will cause unimaginable consequences to users. In this survey, we first review the state-of-the-art of survey papers. Next, we introduce the architecture, features, and services of 5GVN, followed by the privacy objectives of 5GVN and privacy threats to 5GVN. Further, we present existing privacy-preserving solutions and analyze them in-depth. Finally, we define some future research directions to draw more attention and down-to-earth efforts into this new architecture and its privacy issues.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been characterized by a social media "infodemic": an overabundance of information whose authenticity may not always be guaranteed. With the potential to lead individuals to harmful decisions for the society, this infodemic represents a severe threat to information security, public health and democracy. In this paper, we assess the interplay between the infodemic and specific aspects of the pandemic, such as the number of cases, the strictness of containment measures, and the news media coverage. We perform a comparative study on three countries that employed different managements of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020-namely Italy, the United Kingdom, and New Zealand. We first analyze the three countries from an epidemiological perspective to characterize the impact of the pandemic and the strictness of the restrictions adopted. Then, we collect a total of 6 million posts from Facebook to describe user news consumption behaviors with respect to the reliability of such posts. Finally, we quantify the relationship between the number of posts published in each of the three countries and the number of confirmed cases, the strictness of the restrictions adopted, and the online news media coverage about the pandemic. Our results show that posts referring to reliable sources are consistently predominant in the news circulation, and that users engage more with reliable posts rather than with posts referring to questionable sources. Furthermore, our modelling results suggest that factors related to the epidemiological and informational ecosystems can serve as proxies to assess the evolution of the infodemic.

Recent technological innovations lead to the rise of a plethora of portable electronic devices such as smartphones, small household appliances, and other IoT devices. To power or recharge the battery of such devices, manufacturers identified in the ubiquitous Universal Serial Bus (USB) standard a convenient solution, as it enables both communication and energy supply. Unfortunately, the default trust on USB ports has been exploited by hackers to extract highly sensitive user data on such devices. Despite the efforts by security experts and manufacturers to detect and block this threat, an even more stealthy approach to undermine users privacy relies on side-channel attacks on the USB interface, such as electromagnetic emissions and power consumption.In this paper, we present a comprehensive survey of the state-of-the-art of side-channel analysis on the security of USB-powered devices. Differently from other surveys on USB-based attacks via the communication interface only, this survey considers research works that aim to infer or extract private information from the energy supply, the device itself, or unintentionally available functionalities. In particular, we consider this emergent trend of security work that was not previously considered in other surveys, such as the energy consumption and electromagnetic emission analyses, as well as Juice Filming Charging (JFC) attacks. We first analyze the physical properties of the side-channels and technical characteristics of such research work, we then summarize the countermeasures proposed in the state-of-the-art. Finally, we also identify some possible future directions to foster further research in this field.

Secure comparison problem, also known as Yao's Millionaires' problem, was introduced by Andrew Yao in 1982. It is a fundamental problem in secure multi-party computation. In this problem, two millionaires are interested in determining the richer one between them without revealing their actual wealth. Yao's millionaires' problem is a classic and fundamental problem in cryptography. The design of secure and efficient solutions to this problem provides effective building blocks for secure multi-party computation. However, only a few of the solutions in the literature have succeeded in resisting attacks of malicious adversaries, and none of these solutions has been proven secure in malicious model under ideal/real simulation paradigm. In this paper, we propose two secure solutions to Yao's millionaires' problem in the malicious model. One solution has full simulation security, and the other solution achieves onesided simulation security. Both protocols are only based on symmetric cryptography. Experimental results indicate that our protocols can securely solve Yao's millionaires' problem with high efficiency and scalability. Furthermore, our solutions show better performance than the state-of-the-art solutions in terms of complexity and security. Specifically, our solutions only require O(|U|) symmetric operations at most to achieve simulation-based security against malicious adversaries, where U denotes the universal set and |U| denotes the size of U.

Abstract Identifying the true identity of a subject in the absence of external verification criteria (documents, DNA, fingerprints, etc.) is an unresolved issue. Here, we report an experiment on the verification of fake identities, identified by means of their specific keystroke dynamics as analysed in their written response using a computer keyboard. Results indicate that keystroke analysis can distinguish liars from truth tellers with a high degree of accuracy - around 95% - thanks to the use of unexpected questions that efficiently facilitate the emergence of deception clues.
