Abstract

Purpose Evidence of an increased diagnostic pressure on thyroid has emerged over the past decades. This study aimed to provide estimates of a wide spectrum of surveillance indicators for thyroid dysfunctions and diseases in Italy. Methods A population-based study was conducted in North-eastern Italy, including 11.7 million residents (20% of the total Italian population). Prescriptions for TSH testing, neck ultrasound or thyroid fine needle aspiration (FNA), surgical procedures, and drugs for hypo- or hyperthyroidism were extracted from regional health databases. Proportions and rates of selected examinations were calculated from 2010 to 2017, overall and by sex, calendar years, age, and region. Results Between 2010 and 2017 in North-eastern Italy, 24.5% of women and 9.8% of men received at least one TSH test yearly. In 2017, 7.1% of women and 1.5% of men were prescribed drugs for thyroid dysfunction, 94.6% of whom for hypothyroidism. Neck ultrasound examinations were performed yearly in 6.9% of women and 4.6% of men, with a nearly two-fold variation between areas. Thyroid FNA and thyroidectomies were three-fold more frequent in women (394 and 85 per 100,000) than in men (128 and 29 per 100,000) with a marked variation between areas. Both procedures decreased consistently after 2013. Conclusions The results of this population-based study describe recent variations over time and between surrounding areas of indicators of ‘diagnostic pressure’ on thyroid in North-eastern Italy. These results emphasize the need to harmonize practices and to reduce some procedures (e.g., neck ultrasound and total thyroidectomies) in certain areas.

Abstract

Nell'ambito di un progetto di ricerca del Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche - Istituto per la dinamica dei processi ambientali condotto da uno degli autori (PV), volto allo studio della mineralogia, petrologia e geochimica delle pegmatiti incassate nei basamenti Sudalpino e Austroalpino, è stato ristudiato il filone di Malga Garbella, Rabbi (Trento). I minerali già conosciuti per cui questa pegmatite è famosa, lo sciorlo, il crisoberillo e l'almandino sono stati studiati a fondo così come tutti gli altri minerali fondamentali e accessori. Le moderne metodologie analitiche hanno permesso di confermare e meglio descrivere minerali precedentemente segnalati, correggere eventuali errori e descrivere novità vere e proprie per la località quali jahnsite-(CaMnFe), fairfieldite, fluorapatite, fosfoferrite, fosfuranilite, kryzhanovskite, meta-autunite, sarcopside, uraninite, uranofane-?, whitmoreite e wolfeite. Mentre alluaudite, ludlamite e kapundaite vengono qui descritte per la prima volta in Italia, in particolare la kapundaite è stata trovata solo in altre due località al mondo.

15. Electron microscopy investigation of a flower-like mineralization on Bi-sulfosalts from Alfenza (Crodo). A new Bi hydrated sulfate?

A flower-like mineralization of white, micrometre-sized crystallites, occurs on Bi sulfosalts from the Alfenza Mine (Crodo). With a standard optical stereomicroscope each single crystal is hardly resolvable. At the scanning electron microscope (SEM), the crystallites show perfect, pseudo-hexagonal, randomly oriented platelets forming a hemispheric aggregate up to several tens of microns in radius. The EDS spectra show distinct S, Bi, O peaks, pointing to a Bi sulfate (or Bi hydrated sulfate). As far as we know, only two natural phases, cannonite [Bi2O(OH)SO4] and riomarinaite [Bi(OH) SO4•H2O], have been reported with a composition that qualitatively match the observed one. However, available physical properties for these minerals (habit, color, cleavage...) do not match with those observed in our case. In order to solve the puzzle, few mineral aggregates were peaked up with a knife tip, dispersed in ethanol, ultrasonicated, and pipetted on a holey-carbon Cu grid for TEM analyses. Preliminary results show a Pmm projected symmetry down the pole of the pseudo-hexagonal platelets consistent with a monoclinic or orthorhombic system, 2D cell parameters a = 17.2(4) and b = 15.9(3) Å, (gamma = 90°), and systematic absences consistent with a 21 screw along the b-axis. A comparison of the observed electron diffractions with those simulated for (synthetic) cannonite and riomarinaite reveals substantial differences, excluding these two phases as possible and opening to the possibility for a new mineral. Deeper investigations are in progress.

Abstract

Radiosounding data and numerical outputs from a cloud-resolving model in conjunction with a Monte Carlo statistical scheme and a radiative transfer algorithm (SNEM) are used to characterize propagation parameters at V- and W-band in Rome, NY, for any meteorological scenario including clear-air, cloudy coverage, stratiform rain and convective precipitation. The analysis aims at exploiting these databases for the design of simple estimators of propagation parameters up to W-band from ground-based microwave radiometers measurements collected in various atmospheric conditions.

Abstract

Aim. The importance of vaginal pH and vaginal flora in maintaining a well-balanced vaginal ecosystem is well known and has been widely described. However, no systematic nationwide studies have been carried out concerning the correlation between vaginal pH, life style and different physiopathological conditions in women of different ages. Methods. SOPHY (Study on pH and Hygiene) collected data concerning the lifestyle, vaginal pH, and the presence of symptoms, stratified into different subgroups (prepuberal, fertile, pregnancy, postpartum, premenopause and menopause) in a representative sample of the Italian gynecological population (264 gynaecologists for a total of 2 641 women) with the aid of a specific Internet site for data entry. Results. A more acid vaginal pH was related to a better satisfactory sexual activity and to more healthy genital condition. A positive relationship was detected between education level and good perception of sexuality. Certain clothing habits and a higher frequency of candidiasis and bacterial vaginosis was shown. Conclusion. SOPHY revealed some interesting correlations between clothing and the frequency of candidiasis and bacterial vaginosis, between vaginal pH and satisfactory sexual activity, and between education and sexuality. SOPHY had a considerable educational impact, leading the physicians and women to consider vaginal pH as an important aspect of everyday life.

Abstract

A field campaign was carried out in the framework of the Mitigation of Electromagnetic Transmission errors induced by Atmospheric Water Vapour Effects (METAWAVE) project sponsored by the European Space Agency (ESA) to investigate the accuracy of currently available sources of atmospheric columnar integrated water vapor measurements. The METAWAVE campaign took place in Rome, Italy, for the 2-week period from 19 September to 4 October 2008. The collected dataset includes observations from ground-based microwave radiometers and Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers, from meteorological numerical model analysis and predictions, from balloon-borne in-situ radiosoundings, as well as from spaceborne infrared radiometers. These different sources of integrated water vapor (IWV) observations have been analyzed and compared to quantify the accuracy and investigate the potential for mitigating IWV-related electromagnetic path delay errors in Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) imaging. The results, which include a triple collocation analysis accounting for errors inherently present in every IWV measurements, are valid not only to InSAR but also to any other application involving water vapor sensing. The present analysis concludes that the requirements for mitigating the effects of turbulent water vapor component into InSAR are significantly higher than the accuracy of the instruments analyzed here. Nonetheless, information on the IWV vertical stratification from satellite observations, numerical models, and GPS receivers may provide valuable aid to suppress the long spatial wavelength (>20 km) component of the atmospheric delay, and thus significantly improve the performances of InSAR phase unwrapping techniques.

Abstract

The population of cancer survivors has grown steadily over the past several decades. Surviving cancer, however, is not synonymous with a life free of problems related to the disease and its treatment. In this paper we provide a brief overview of selected physical and psychosocial health problems prevalent among cancer survivors, namely pain, fatigue, psychological distress and work participation. We also address issues surrounding self-management and e-Health interventions for cancer survivors, and programmes to encourage survivors to adopt healthier lifestyles. Finally, we discuss approaches to assessing health-related quality of life in cancer survivors, and the use of cancer registries in conducting psychosocial survivorship research. We highlight research and practice priorities in each of these areas. While the priorities vary per topic, common themes that emerged included: (1) Symptoms should not be viewed in isolation, but rather as part of a cluster of interrelated symptoms. This has implications for both understanding the aetiology of symptoms and for their treatment; (2) Psychosocial interventions need to be evidence-based, and where possible should be tailored to the needs of the individual cancer survivor. Relatively low cost interventions with self-management and e-Health elements may be appropriate for the majority of survivors, with resource intensive interventions being reserved for those most in need; (3) More effort should be devoted to disseminating and implementing interventions in practice, and to evaluating their cost-effectiveness; and (4) Greater attention should be paid to the needs of vulnerable and high-risk populations of survivors, including the socioeconomically disadvantaged and the elderly.
