The barred spiral galaxy NGC 613 has a star-forming ring in the center, and near-infrared observations have previously shown that the star formation activity on the eastern and western sides of the ring is asymmetric. We examined the dynamics and physical state of the molecular gas in the ring using high-resolution (∼15 pc) 12CO(1–0), 12CO(3–2), and 13CO(1–0) observations with ALMA. Using a dendrogram, we identified 111 molecular clouds in the bar and ring, and found that the virial parameter (αvir) gradually decreases (αvir < 2) toward the confluence of the northern bar and eastern ring, while the virial parameter is large (αvir > 2) around the corresponding confluence in the western side of the ring. A non-LTE analysis using RADEX showed that the temperature and density of the molecular gas increase downstream of the eastern point of confluence, whereas they change irregularly on the western side. The star formation efficiency is (1.7 ± 0.2) × 10−8 yr−1 in the eastern side of the ring, which is substantially higher than the (0.9 ± 0.3) × 10−8 yr−1 for the western side of the ring. Position–velocity diagrams show that the relative velocity of the gas between the bar and the ring is ∼70 km s−1 in the east, while it reaches ∼170 km s−1 in the west. We suggest that the star formation activity in the central region of NGC 613 depends strongly on the relative velocity of the gas between the bar and the ring.

We have developed a method to make a spectral-line-based survey of hot cores, which represent an important stage of high-mass star formation, and applied the method to the data of the FUGIN (FOREST Unbiased Galactic plane Imaging survey with the Nobeyama 45 m telescope) survey. First, we select hot core candidates by searching the FUGIN data for the weak hot core tracer lines (HNCO and CH3CN) by stacking, and then we conduct follow-up pointed observations on these candidates in C34S, SO, OCS, HC3N, HNCO, CH3CN, and CH3OH J = 2–1 and J = 8–7 lines to confirm and characterize them. We applied this method to the l = 10°–20° portion of the FUGIN data and identified 22 “HotCores” (compact sources with more than two significant detections of the hot core tracer lines, i.e., SO, OCS, HC3N, HNCO, CH3CN, or CH3OH J = 8–7 lines) and 14 “DenseClumps” (sources with more than two significant detection of C34S, CH3OH J = 2–1, or the hot core tracer lines). The identified HotCores are found to be associated with signposts of high-mass star formation such as ATLASGAL clumps, WISE H ii regions, and Class II methanol masers. Many of the FUGIN HotCores are identified with the Herschel Hi-GAL clumps with a median mass of 6.8 × 102 M⊙ and a median bolometric luminosity of 7.4 × 103 L⊙. Five of the seven HotCores with stronger CH3CN lines exhibit elevated gas temperatures of 50–100 K. These observations suggest that FUGIN HotCores are closely related to the formation of stars with medium to high mass. For those associated with ATLASGAL clumps, their bolometric luminosity to clump mass ratios are consistent with the star formation stages centered at the hot core phase. The catalog of FUGIN HotCores provides a useful starting point for further statistical studies and detailed observations of high-mass star forming regions.

We present 850 $��$m polarimetric observations toward the Serpens Main molecular cloud obtained using the POL-2 polarimeter on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) as part of the B-fields In STar-forming Region Observations (BISTRO) survey. These observations probe the magnetic field morphology of the Serpens Main molecular cloud on about 6000 au scales, which consists of cores and six filaments with different physical properties such as density and star formation activity. Using the histogram of relative orientation (HRO) technique, we find that magnetic fields are parallel to filaments in less dense filamentary structures where $N_{H_2} < 0.93\times 10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$ (magnetic fields perpendicular to density gradients), while being perpendicular to filaments (magnetic fields parallel to density gradients) in dense filamentary structures with star formation activity. Moreover, applying the HRO technique to denser core regions, we find that magnetic field orientations change to become perpendicular to density gradients again at $N_{H_2} \approx 4.6 \times 10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$. This can be interpreted as a signature of core formation. At $N_{H_2} \approx 16 \times 10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$ magnetic fields change back to being parallel to density gradients once again, which can be understood to be due to magnetic fields being dragged in by infalling material. In addition, we estimate the magnetic field strengths of the filaments ($B_{POS} = 60-300~��$G)) using the Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi method and discuss whether the filaments are gravitationally unstable based on magnetic field and turbulence energy densities., 18 pages, accepted for publication in ApJ

Tao-Chung Ching et al., We present 850 μm dust polarization observations of the massive DR21 filament from the B-fields In STar-forming Region Observations (BISTRO) survey, using the POL-2 polarimeter and the SCUBA-2 camera on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. We detect ordered magnetic fields perpendicular to the parsec-scale ridge of the DR21 main filament. In the subfilaments, the magnetic fields are mainly parallel to the filamentary structures and smoothly connect to the magnetic fields of the main filament. We compare the POL-2 and Planck dust polarization observations to study the magnetic field structures of the DR21 filament on 0.1–10 pc scales. The magnetic fields revealed in the Planck data are well-aligned with those of the POL-2 data, indicating a smooth variation of magnetic fields from large to small scales. The plane-of-sky magnetic field strengths derived from angular dispersion functions of dust polarization are 0.6–1.0 mG in the DR21 filament and ∼0.1 mG in the surrounding ambient gas. The mass-to-flux ratios are found to be magnetically supercritical in the filament and slightly subcritical to nearly critical in the ambient gas. The alignment between column density structures and magnetic fields changes from random alignment in the low-density ambient gas probed by Planck to mostly perpendicular in the high-density main filament probed by James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. Hwang et al., We present and analyze observations of polarized dust emission at 850 μm toward the central 1 × 1 pc hub-filament structure of Monoceros R2 (Mon R2). The data are obtained with SCUBA-2/POL-2 on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) as part of the B-fields in Star-forming Region Observations survey. The orientations of the magnetic field follow the spiral structure of Mon R2, which are well described by an axisymmetric magnetic field model. We estimate the turbulent component of the magnetic field using the angle difference between our observations and the best-fit model of the underlying large-scale mean magnetic field. This estimate is used to calculate the magnetic field strength using the Davis–Chandrasekhar–Fermi method, for which we also obtain the distribution of volume density and velocity dispersion using a column density map derived from Herschel data and the C18O (J = 3 − 2) data taken with HARP on the JCMT, respectively. We make maps of magnetic field strengths and mass-to-flux ratios, finding that magnetic field strengths vary from 0.02 to 3.64 mG with a mean value of 1.0 ± 0.06 mG, and the mean critical mass-to-flux ratio is 0.47 ± 0.02. Additionally, the mean Alfvén Mach number is 0.35 ± 0.01. This suggests that, in Mon R2, the magnetic fields provide resistance against large-scale gravitational collapse, and the magnetic pressure exceeds the turbulent pressure. We also investigate the properties of each filament in Mon R2. We present the results of simultaneous 450 $\mu$m and 850 $\mu$m polarization observations toward the massive star forming region NGC 2071IR, a target of the BISTRO (B-fields in Star-Forming Region Observations) Survey, using the POL-2 polarimeter and SCUBA-2 camera mounted on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. We find a pinched magnetic field morphology in the central dense core region, which could be due to a rotating toroidal disk-like structure and a bipolar outflow originating from the central young stellar object, IRS 3. Using the modified Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi method, we obtain a plane-of-sky magnetic field strength of 563$\pm$421 $\mu$G in the central $\sim$0.12 pc region from 850 $\mu$m polarization data. The corresponding magnetic energy density of 2.04$\times$10$^{-8}$ erg cm$^{-3}$ is comparable to the turbulent and gravitational energy densities in the region. We find that the magnetic field direction is very well aligned with the whole of the IRS 3 bipolar outflow structure. We find that the median value of polarization fractions, 3.0 \%, at 450 $\mu$m in the central 3 arcminute region, which is larger than the median value of 1.2 \% at 850 $\mu$m. The trend could be due to the better alignment of warmer dust in the strong radiation environment. We also find that polarization fractions decrease with intensity at both wavelengths, with slopes, determined by fitting a Rician noise model, of $0.59 \pm 0.03$ at 450 $\mu$m and $0.36 \pm 0.04$ at 850 $\mu$m, respectively. We think that the shallow slope at 850 $\mu$m is due to grain alignment at the center being assisted by strong radiation from the central young stellar objects., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures, 4 tables

The physical origin of the overionized recombining plasmas (RPs) in supernova remnants (SNRs) has been attracting attention because its understanding provides new insight into SNR evolution. However, the process of the overionization, although it has been discussed in some RP-SNRs, is not yet fully understood. Here we report on spatially resolved spectroscopy of X-ray emission from IC~443 with {\it XMM-Newton}. We find that RPs in regions interacting with dense molecular clouds tend to have lower electron temperature and lower recombination timescale. These tendencies indicate that RPs in these regions are cooler and more strongly overionized, which is naturally interpreted as a result of rapid cooling by the molecular clouds via thermal conduction. Our result on IC~443 is similar to that on W44 showing evidence for thermal conduction as the origin of RPs at least in older remnants. We suggest that evaporation of clumpy gas embedded in a hot plasma rapidly cools the plasma as was also found in the W44 case. We also discuss if ionization by protons accelerated in IC~443 is responsible for RPs. We have obtained sensitive dust continuum polarization observations at 850 μm in the B213 region of Taurus using POL-2 on SCUBA-2 at the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope as part of the B-fields in STar-forming Region Observations (BISTRO) survey. These observations allow us to probe magnetic field (B-field) at high spatial resolution (∼2000 au or ∼0.01 pc at 140 pc) in two protostellar cores (K04166 and K04169) and one prestellar core (Miz-8b) that lie within the B213 filament. Using the Davis–Chandrasekhar–Fermi method, we estimate the B-field strengths in K04166, K04169, and Miz-8b to be 38 ± 14, 44 ± 16, and 12 ± 5 μG, respectively. These cores show distinct mean B-field orientations. The B-field in K04166 is well ordered and aligned parallel to the orientations of the core minor axis, outflows, core rotation axis, and large-scale uniform B-field, in accordance with magnetically regulated star formation via ambipolar diffusion taking place in K04166. The B-field in K04169 is found to be ordered but oriented nearly perpendicular to the core minor axis and large-scale B-field and not well correlated with other axes. In contrast, Miz-8b exhibits a disordered B-field that shows no preferred alignment with the core minor axis or large-scale field. We found that only one core, K04166, retains a memory of the large-scale uniform B-field. The other two cores, K04169 and Miz-8b, are decoupled from the large-scale field. Such a complex B-field configuration could be caused by gas inflow onto the filament, even in the presence of a substantial magnetic flux.

Atomic carbon (CI) has been proposed to be a global tracer of the molecular gas as a substitute for CO, however, its utility remains unproven. To evaluate the suitability of CI as the tracer, we performed [CI]$(^3P_1-^3P_0)$ (hereinafter [CI](1-0)) mapping observations of the northern part of the nearby spiral galaxy M83 with the ASTE telescope and compared the distributions of [CI](1-0) with CO lines (CO(1-0), CO(3-2), and $^{13}$CO(1-0)), HI, and infrared (IR) emission (70, 160, and 250$ \mu$m). The [CI](1-0) distribution in the central region is similar to that of the CO lines, whereas [CI](1-0) in the arm region is distributed outside the CO. We examined the dust temperature, $T_{\rm dust}$, and dust mass surface density, $\Sigma_{\rm dust}$, by fitting the IR continuum-spectrum distribution with a single-temperature modified blackbody. The distribution of $\Sigma_{\rm dust}$ shows a much better consistency with the integrated intensity of CO(1-0) than with that of [CI](1-0), indicating that CO(1-0) is a good tracer of the cold molecular gas. The spatial distribution of the [CI] excitation temperature, $T_{\rm ex}$, was examined using the intensity ratio of the two [CI] transitions. An appropriate $T_{\rm ex}$ at the central, bar, arm, and inter-arm regions yields a constant [C]/[H$_2$] abundance ratio of $\sim7 \times 10^{-5}$ within a range of 0.1 dex in all regions. We successfully detected weak [CI](1-0) emission, even in the inter-arm region, in addition to the central, arm, and bar regions, using spectral stacking analysis. The stacked intensity of [CI](1-0) is found to be strongly correlated with $T_{\rm dust}$. Our results indicate that the atomic carbon is a photodissociation product of CO, and consequently, compared to CO(1-0), [CI](1-0) is less reliable in tracing the bulk of "cold" molecular gas in the galactic disk., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures, Accepted for publication in PASJ

We report the first high spatial resolution measurement of magnetic fields surrounding LkH$\alpha$ 101, a part of the Auriga-California molecular cloud. The observations were taken with the POL-2 polarimeter on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope within the framework of the B-fields In Star-forming Region Observations (BISTRO) survey. Observed polarization of thermal dust emission at 850 $\mu$m is found to be mostly associated with the red-shifted gas component of the cloud. The magnetic field displays a relatively complex morphology. Two variants of the Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi method, unsharp masking and structure function, are used to calculate the strength of magnetic fields in the plane of the sky, yielding a similar result of $B_{\rm POS}\sim 115$ $\mathrm{\mu}$G. The mass-to-magnetic-flux ratio in critical value units, $\lambda\sim0.3$, is the smallest among the values obtained for other regions surveyed by POL-2. This implies that the LkH$\alpha$ 101 region is sub-critical and the magnetic field is strong enough to prevent gravitational collapse. The inferred $\delta B/B_0\sim 0.3$ implies that the large scale component of the magnetic field dominates the turbulent one. The variation of the polarization fraction with total emission intensity can be fitted by a power-law with an index of $\alpha=0.82\pm0.03$, which lies in the range previously reported for molecular clouds. We find that the polarization fraction decreases rapidly with proximity to the only early B star (LkH$\alpha$ 101) in the region. We present new observations of the active star formation region NGC 1333 in the Perseus molecular cloud complex from the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope B -Fields In Star-forming Region Observations (BISTRO) survey with the POL-2 instrument. The BISTRO data cover the entire NGC 1333 complex (∼1.5 pc × 2 pc) at 0.02 pc resolution and spatially resolve the polarized emission from individual filamentary structures for the first time. The inferred magnetic field structure is complex as a whole, with each individual filament aligned at different position angles relative to the local field orientation. We combine the BISTRO data with low- and high- resolution data derived from Planck and interferometers to study the multiscale magnetic field structure in this region. The magnetic field morphology drastically changes below a scale of ∼1 pc and remains continuous from the scales of filaments (∼0.1 pc) to that of protostellar envelopes (∼0.005 pc or ∼1000 au). Finally, we construct simple models in which we assume that the magnetic field is always perpendicular to the long axis of the filaments. We demonstrate that the observed variation of the relative orientation between the filament axes and the magnetic field angles are well reproduced by this model, taking into account the projection effects of the magnetic field and filaments relative to the plane of the sky. [Abridged] Filaments and hubs have received special attention recently thanks to studies showing their role in star formation. While the column density and velocity structures of both filaments and hubs have been studied, their magnetic fields (B-field) are not yet characterized. We aim to understand the role of the B-field in the dynamical evolution of the NGC 6334 hub-filament network. We present new observations of the dust polarized emission at 850$\mu$m towards NGC 6334 obtained with the JCMT/POL-2. We study the distribution and dispersion of the polarized intensity ($PI$), the polarization fraction ($PF$), and the B-field angle ($\theta_{B}$). We derive the power spectrum of the intensity and $\theta_{B}$ along the ridge crest. Our analyses show a complex B-field structure when observed over the whole region ($\sim10$ pc), however, at smaller scales ($\sim1$ pc), $\theta_{B}$ varies coherently along the filaments. The observed power spectrum of $\theta_{B}$ can be well represented with a power law function with a slope $-1.33\pm0.23$, which is $\sim20\%$ shallower than that of $I$. This result is compatible with the properties of simulated filaments and may indicate the processes at play in the formation of filaments. $\theta_{B}$ rotates from being mostly perpendicular to the filament crests to mostly parallel as they merge with the hubs. This variation of $\theta_{B}$ may be tracing local velocity flows of matter in-falling onto the hubs. Our analysis suggests a variation of the energy balance along the crests of these filaments, from magnetically critical/supercritical at their far ends to magnetically subcritical near the hubs. Observations of the molecular gas in galaxies are vital to understanding the evolution and star-forming histories of galaxies. However, galaxies with molecular gas maps of their whole discs having sufficient resolution to distinguish galactic structures are severely lacking. Millimeter wavelength studies at a high angular resolution across multiple lines and transitions are particularly needed, severely limiting our ability to infer the universal properties of molecular gas in galaxies. Hence, we conducted a legacy project with the 45 m telescope of the Nobeyama Radio Observatory, called the CO Multi-line Imaging of Nearby Galaxies (COMING), which simultaneously observed 147 galaxies with high far-infrared flux in $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO, and C$^{18}$O $J=1-0$ lines. The total molecular gas mass was derived using the standard CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factor and found to be positively correlated with the total stellar mass derived from the WISE $3.4 \mu$m band data. The fraction of the total molecular gas mass to the total stellar mass in galaxies does not depend on their Hubble types nor the existence of a galactic bar, although when galaxies in individual morphological types are investigated separately, the fraction seems to decrease with the total stellar mass in early-type galaxies and vice versa in late-type galaxies. No differences in the distribution of the total molecular gas mass, stellar mass, and the total molecular gas to stellar mass ratio was observed between barred and non-barred galaxies, which is likely the result of our sample selection criteria, in that we prioritized observing FIR bright (and thus molecular gas-rich) galaxies., Comment: Accepted for publication in PASJ; 47 pages, 5 tables, 29 figures. We present the 850 $\mu$m polarization observations toward the IC5146 filamentary cloud taken using the Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array 2 (SCUBA-2) and its associated polarimeter (POL-2), mounted on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT), as part of the B-fields In STar forming Regions Observations (BISTRO). This work is aimed at revealing the magnetic field morphology within a core-scale ($\lesssim 1.0$ pc) hub-filament structure (HFS) located at the end of a parsec-scale filament. To investigate whether or not the observed polarization traces the magnetic field in the HFS, we analyze the dependence between the observed polarization fraction and total intensity using a Bayesian approach with the polarization fraction described by the Rice likelihood function, which can correctly describe the probability density function (PDF) of the observed polarization fraction for low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) data. We find a power-law dependence between the polarization fraction and total intensity with an index of 0.56 in $A_V\sim$ 20--300 mag regions, suggesting that the dust grains in these dense regions can still be aligned with magnetic fields in the IC5146 regions. Our polarization maps reveal a curved magnetic field, possibly dragged by the contraction along the parsec-scale filament. We further obtain a magnetic field strength of 0.5$\pm$0.2 mG toward the central hub using the Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi method, corresponding to a mass-to-flux criticality of $\sim$ $1.3\pm0.4$ and an Alfv\'{e}nic Mach number of $, Comment: 24 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

In the published article, we presented high-resolution polarimetry data obtained by using JCMT SCUBA-2/POL-2, and compared them with the larger-scale magnetic structure observed by Planck (Planck Collaboration et al. 2020). There was a miscalculation in the analysis of the Planck data for comparison, and the mean position angle of the Planck magnetic field should be corrected from -40° ± 7° to -48° ± 6°. Thus, we replace the descriptions in the published article as follows. In Section 4.2, paragraph 3, the second sentence should read: "The differences between the orientations of IRAS 4A, IRAS 4B, and IRAS 2A are not statistically significant, but they do show significantly different orientations from those of the global B-field observed by Planck (-48° ± 6°; Section 4.1)." In Section 4.1, paragraph 3, the second line should read: "The Planck B-field orientation shows a smoothly and slowly varying field distribution with a position angle of -48° ± 6° in our observed NGC 1333 area." Accordingly, we replace Figures 4, 5, 9, 10, and 17 to reflect the correct Planck data. As described above, this error of modest magnitude is related only to our derivation of the Planck polarization angle, and the JCMT observation results are unaffected. Therefore, all conclusions drawn in the published article are unchanged even after the above correction is applied. The 1 pc scale magnetic field observed by Planck shows a smooth distribution, and the interstellar magnetic field in molecular clouds increases the complexity significantly on the scale of less than 1 pc.

We present the results of $^{12}$CO($J$=1-0) and $^{13}$CO($J$=1-0) simultaneous mappings toward the nearby barred spiral galaxy NGC 4303 as a part of the CO Multi-line Imaging of Nearby Galaxies (COMING) project. Barred spiral galaxies often show lower star-formation efficiency (SFE) in their bar region compared to the spiral arms. In this paper, we examine the relation between the SFEs and the volume densities of molecular gas $n(\rm{H}_2)$ in the eight different regions within the galactic disk with CO data combined with archival far-ultraviolet and 24 $\mu$m data. We confirmed that SFE in the bar region is lower by 39% than that in the spiral arms. Moreover, velocity-alignment stacking analysis was performed for the spectra in the individual regions. The integrated intensity ratios of $^{12}$CO to $^{13}$CO ($R_{12/13}$) range from 10 to 17 as the results of stacking. Fixing a kinetic temperature of molecular gas, $n(\rm{H}_2)$ was derived from $R_{12/13}$ via non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (non-LTE) analysis. The density $n(\rm{H}_2)$ in the bar is lower by 31-37% than that in the arms and there is a rather tight positive correlation between SFEs and $n(\rm{H}_2)$, with a correlation coefficient of $\sim 0.8$. Furthermore, we found a dependence of $n(\rm{H}_2)$ on the velocity dispersion of inter-molecular clouds ($\Delta V/ \sin i$). Specifically, $n(\rm{H}_2)$ increases as $\Delta V/ \sin i$ increases when $\Delta V/ \sin i < 100$ km s$^{-1}$. On the other hand, $n(\rm{H}_2)$ decreases as $\Delta V/ \sin i$ increases when $\Delta V/ \sin i > 100$ km s$^{-1}$. These relations indicate that the variations of SFE could be caused by the volume densities of molecular gas, and the volume densities could be governed by the dynamical influence such as cloud-cloud collisions, shear and enhanced inner-cloud turbulence., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ

The $^{12}$CO $(J=1\rightarrow0)$ velocity fields of a sample of 20 nearby spiral galaxies, selected from the CO Multi-line Imaging of Nearby Galaxies (COMING) legacy project of Nobeyama Radio Observatory, have been analyzed by Fourier decomposition to determine their basic kinematic properties, such as circular and noncircular velocities. On average, the investigated barred (SAB and SB) galaxies exhibit a ratio of noncircular to circular velocities of molecular gas larger by a factor of 1.5-2 than non-barred (SA) spiral galaxies at radii within the bar semimajor axis $a_\mathrm{b}$ at 1 kpc resolution, with a maximum at a radius of $R/a_\mathrm{b}\sim0.3$. Residual velocity field images, created by subtracting model velocity fields from the data, reveal that this trend is caused by kpc-scale streaming motions of molecular gas in the bar region. Applying a new method based on radial velocity reversal, we estimated the corotation radius $R_\mathrm{CR}$ and bar pattern speed $\Omega_\mathrm{b}$ in seven SAB and SB systems. The ratio of the corotation to bar radius is found to be in a range of $\mathcal{R}\equiv R_\mathrm{CR}/a_\mathrm{b}\sim0.8\mathrm{-}1.6$, suggesting that intermediate (SBb-SBc), luminous barred spiral galaxies host fast and slow rotator bars. Tentative negative correlations are found for $\Omega_\mathrm{b}$ vs. $a_\mathrm{b}$ and $\Omega_\mathrm{b}$ vs. total stellar mass $M_\ast$, indicating that bars in massive disks are larger and rotate slower, possibly a consequence of angular momentum transfer. The FUGIN CO survey with the Nobeyama 45-m Telescope revealed the 3D structure of a galactic shock wave in the tangential direction of the 4-kpc molecular arm. The shock front is located at G30.5+00.0+95 km/s on the up-stream (lower longitude) side of the star-forming complex W43 (G30.8-0.03), and composes a molecular bow shock (MBS) concave to W43, exhibiting an arc-shaped molecular ridge perpendicular to the galactic plane with width $\sim 0^\circ.1$ (10 pc) and vertical length $\sim 1^\circ \ (100\ {\rm pc})$. The MBS is coincident with the radio continuum bow of thermal origin, indicating association of ionized gas and similarity to a cometary bright-rimmed cloud. The up-stream edge of the bow is sharp with a growth width of $\sim 0.5$ pc indicative of shock front property. The velocity width is $\sim 10$ km/s, and the center velocity decreases by $\sim 15$ \kms from bottom to top of the bow. We report ALMA observations of [CI]($^3P_1-^3P_0$), C$^{13}$O, and CO$^{18}$ ($J=1-0$) toward the central region of a nearby Seyfert galaxy NGC 613. The very high resolutions of $0.26"\times0.23"(=22\times20$ pc) for [CI] and $0.42"\times0.35"(=36\times30$ pc) for C$^{13}$O, and CO$^{18}$ resolve the circum-nuclear disk (CND) and star-forming ring. The distribution of [CI] in the ring resembles that of the CO emission, although [CI] is prominent in the CND. This can be caused by the low intensities of the CO isotopes due to the low optical depths under the high temperature in the CND. We found that the intensity ratios of [CI] to C$^{12}$O(3-2) ($R_{\rm CI/CO}$) and to C$^{13}$O(1-0) ($R_{\rm CI/C^{13}O}$) are high at several positions around the edge of the ring. The spectral profiles of CO lines mostly correspond each other in the spots of the ring and high $R_{\rm CI/CO}$, but those of [CI] at spots of high $R_{\rm CI/CO}$ are different from CO. These results indicate that [CI] at the high $R_{\rm CI/CO}$ traces different gas from that traced by the CO lines. The [CI] kinematics along the minor axis of NGC 613 could be interpreted as a bubbly molecular outflow. The outflow rate of molecular gas is higher than star formation rate in the CND. In this paper, we present a condition of optical systems to form images independent of frequency. The condition independent of frequency in case of a single Gaussian beam on an optical axis has been known, but that in case of a beam propagated off the axis or tilted beam, which appears in a wide field-of-view (FOV) telescope, has not been known. We first show relations between an arbitrary electric field on an object plane and an induced one on an image plane after passing through a lens with calculating Fresnel diffraction integrals. If the lens formula is met, there is a one-to-one correspondence between points on the object and image plane. This result enables to use geometrical optical methods. The condition and relations derived here are confirmed by simulations. We also applied them to a wide-FOV telescope.

A dielectric lens with high refractive index is suitable for focusing cryogenic devices in millimeter-wave bands when an appropriate anti-reflection (AR) coating is applied. Two types of AR coatings for silicon and alumina were studied at the millimeter-wave (220 GHz) band: one is by direct machining of mixed epoxy for a silicon lens array, while the other is by laser machining of an antireflective subwavelength structure for a large alumina lens used in a re-imaging optics system. The millimeter-wave optical properties of silicon, alumina, aluminum nitride, and Stycast epoxies were measured with a Fourier Transform Spectrometer (FTS) at cryogenic temperatures. The measured refractive index of the AR coating with a mixture of Stycast 1266 (n = 1.68) and Stycast 2850FTJ (n = 2.2) for silicon at 30 K was 1.84. The thickness of the epoxy AR coating was precisely controlled with direct machining. Transmittance of the AR-coated silicon substrate, measured with FTS, was approximately 95 % at the center frequency of the 220 GHz band with a bandwidth of 25 % at 27 K. An antireflective subwavelength structure was designed for an alumina sample with periodic cylindrical holes. The measured 220-GHz-band transmittance was above 90 % with a bandwidth of 25 % at 25 K.

We have been developing a large-format millimeter-wave camera based on lens-antenna-coupled microwave kinetic inductance detectors (MKIDs) for a planned telescope at Dome Fuji (3810 m a.s.l.), Antarctica. Optical coupling to the MKID incorporates double-slot antennas and a silicon lens array. To realize a large-format camera ( $$>$$ 10,000 pixels), a highly integrated small-diameter lens array and fast optics are required. Lens diameters of 1.2, 2, and 3 times the target wavelength are investigated for the main beam symmetry, side-lobe level, cross-polarization level, and bandwidth, considering the effects of the surrounding lenses. In this study, we present the simulated beam pattern profiles of close-packed lens antenna and the effect of misalignment between the silicon lens and double-slot antenna. We also show the evaluations of the developed 721-pixel close-packed silicon lens array.

We report ALMA observations of molecular gas and continuum emission in the 90 and 350 GHz bands toward a nearby Seyfert galaxy NGC 613. Radio continuum emissions were detected at 95 and 350 GHz from both the circum-nuclear disk (CND) ($r\leq90$ pc) and a star-forming ring (250 pc $\leq r\leq 340$ pc), and the 95 GHz continuum was observed to extend from the center at a position angle of $20^{\circ} \pm 8^{\circ}$. The archival 4.9 GHz data and our 95 GHz data show spectral indices of $\alpha\leq -0.6$ and $-0.2$ along the jets and in the star-forming ring; these can be produced by synchrotron emission and free-free emission, respectively. In addition, we detected the emission of CO(3-2), HCN(1-0), HCN(4-3), HCO$^+$(1-0), HCO$^+$(4-3), CS(2-1), and CS(7-6) in both the CND and ring. The rotational temperatures and column densities of molecules derived from $J=1-0$ and $4-3$ lines of HCN and HCO$^+$ and $J=2-1$ and $7-6$ of CS in the CND and ring were derived. Furthermore, a non-LTE model revealed that the kinetic temperature of $T_{\rm k}=350-550$ K in the CND is higher than $T_{\rm k}=80-300$ K in the ring, utilizing the intensity ratios of HCN, HCO$^+$, and CS. The star-formation efficiency in the CND is almost an order of magnitude lower than those at the spots in the star-forming ring, while the dominant activity of the central region is the star formation rather than active galactic nuclei. We determined that the large velocity dispersion of CO extending toward the north side of the CND and decomposing into blueshifted and redshifted features is probably explained by the effect of the radio jets. We have developed 220 and 440-GHz cameras using microwave kinetic inductance detectors (MKIDs) for astronomical observations. The optical system of the MKID camera is based on double-slot antennas and extended hemispherical silicon lens arrays. The lens diameter is three times the target wavelength. The 220-GHz camera and the 440-GHz camera have 9 pixels and 102 pixels, respectively. The silicon lens array has been directly machined using a high-speed spindle on an ultra-precision machine. The shape fabrication error and the surface roughness of the top of the lens were typically less than 10 μm (peak-to-valley) and about 0.7 μm (rms), respectively. The beam patterns of the MKID camera were measured and are in good agreement with the calculations.

Dome Fuji on the Antarctic high plateau may be a good site for terahertz astronomy because of its high altitude of 3,810 m and low average temperature of −54°C. We have demonstrated that the opacity at 220 GHz from Dome Fuji in summer is very good and stable; τ = 0.045 ± 0.007. We have developed a transportable 30 cm telescope to map the Milky Way in the CO (J=4–3) and the [CI] (3P1–3P0) lines at Dome Fuji from 2014. It has a 9′ beam. Physical conditions such as density and temperature of molecular clouds could be derived from a direct comparison of CO (J=4–3) and [CI] (3P1–3P0) with CO (J=1–0) taken by the Columbia–CfA survey. We are also developing a 1.2 m sub-millimeter telescope. It will be equipped with a dual superconducting device (SIS) receiver for 500/800 GHz. The 1.2 m telescope produces a 2.2′ beam at 492 GHz and could map a molecular cloud entirely. It could also observe nearby galaxies in the CO (J=4–3), CO (J=7–6), [CI] (3P1–3P0), [CI] (3P2–3P1) and in continuum emission between 460–810 GHz.

We are developing quasi-optical superconducting hot-electron bolometer (HEB) mixer receivers for astronomical and atmospheric remote sensing applications. The microbridge of the HEB mixer was fabricated at room temperature from a 6.8-nm-thick niobium titanium nitride (NbTiN) film deposited on a 20-nm-thick aluminum nitride (AlN) buffer layer, using a helicon sputtering technique at a slow deposition rate. The mixer was cooled to 4.2 K using a closed-cycled mechanical 4 K pulse-tube cryocooler with a temperature fluctuation of ±1.6 mK. The stability of a large-volume NbTiN HEB mixer was studied at 1.47 THz by changing local oscillator (LO) power with the mixer bias voltage fixed. The intermediate frequency (IF) signal measured at 1.5 GHz had a maximum peak at a certain mixer bias current. The receiver noise temperature was lowest at around the IF maximum peak. It was also found that the IF signal was most stable at around the IF maximum peak under conditions in which the instability of LO pumping level, induced by small mechanical vibrations of the cryostat, remained in the optical system.

We carried out $^{12}$CO($J$ = 1-0) observations of the Galactic gamma-ray supernova remnant (SNR) Kesteven 79 using the Nobeyama Radio Observatory 45 m radio telescope, which has an angular resolution of $\sim20$ arcsec. We identified molecular and atomic gas interacting with Kesteven 79 whose radial velocity is $\sim80$ km s$^{-1}$. The interacting molecular and atomic gases show good spatial correspondence with the X-ray and radio shells, which have an expanding motion with an expanding velocity of $\sim4$ km s$^{-1}$. The molecular gas associated with the radio and X-ray peaks also exhibits a high-intensity ratio of CO 3-2/1-0 $>$ 0.8, suggesting a kinematic temperature of $\sim24$ K, owing to heating by the supernova shock. We determined the kinematic distance to the SNR to be $\sim5.5$ kpc and the radius of the SNR to be $\sim8$ pc. The average interstellar proton density inside of the SNR is $\sim360$ cm$^{-3}$, of which atomic protons comprise only $\sim10$ $\%$. Assuming a hadronic origin for the gamma-ray emission, the total cosmic-ray proton energy above 1 GeV is estimated to be $\sim5 \times 10^{48}$ erg., 12 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal (ApJ)

We measured the 220 GHz atmospheric-transparency at the Dome Fuji station in Antarctica from 18 December 2006 to 14 January 2007 using a tipping radiometer. The mean optical depth at zenith was 0.045 ± 0.007, and during 98% of this period we measured an optical depth of less than 0.06. These data indicate that the atmospheric-transparency in summer at Dome Fuji is comparable to that of well-known submillimeter astronomical sites such as the Atacama desert in Chile in their best seasons.

We have been monitoring the flux density of Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*) at 22 GHz since DOY=42 (11 Feb. 2013) with a sub-array of the Japanese VLBI Network in order to search the increase of 22-GHz emission from Sgr A* induced by the interaction of the G2 cloud with the accretion disk. The flux densities observed until DOY=322 (18 Nov. 2013) are consistent with the previously observed values before the approaching of the cloud. We have detected no large flare during this period.

This paper presents a new configuration of quasi-optical polarization-rotating dual-beam interferometer, which uses a pair of frequency-selective polarizers (FSPs) consisting of a wire-grid placed in front of a flat mirror, and has a function similar to the conventional Martin-Puplett interferometer (MPI). Advantages of this new configuration over the conventional MPI are lower residual reflection at the input and output ports and suitability to fixed-tuned applications. An experiment has shown it to have an MPI-like frequency characteristic as calculated. Careful machining was successful in achieving accuracy needed for a specified filter characteristic. This FSP-based quasi-optical device is to be used as a sideband separator in a space-borne submillimeter receiver for atmospheric research.

We present the results of ammonia observations toward the center of NGC 3079. The NH3(J, K) = (1, 1) and (2, 2) inversion lines were detected in absorption with the Tsukuba 32-m telescope, and the NH3(1,1) through (6,6) lines with the VLA, although the profile of NH3(3,3) was in emission in contrast to the other transitions. The background continuum source, whose flux density was ~50 mJy, could not be resolved with the VLA beam of ~< 0."09 x 0."08. All ammonia absorption lines have two distinct velocity components: one is at the systemic velocity and the other is blueshifted, and both components are aligned along the nuclear jets. For the systemic components, the relatively low temperature gas is extended more than the high temperature gas. The blueshifted NH3(3,3) emission can be regarded as ammonia masers associated with shocks by strong winds probably from newly formed massive stars or supernova explosions in dense clouds in the nuclear megamaser disk. Using para-NH3(1,1), (2,2), (4,4) and (5,5) lines with VLA, we derived the rotational temperature Trot = 120 +- 12 K and 157 +- 19 K for the systemic and blueshifted components, respectively. The total column densities of NH3(0,0)-(6,6), assuming Tex ~Trot, were (8.85+-0.70) x 10^16 cm^-2 and (4.47+-0.78) x 10^16 cm-2 for the systemic and blueshifted components, respectively. The fractional abundance of NH3 relative to molecular hydrogen H2 for the systemic and blueshifted was [NH3]/[H2]=1.3x10^-7 and 6.5 x 10^-8, respectively. We also found the F = 4-4 and F = 5-5 doublet lines of OH 2{Pi}3/2 J = 9/2 in absorption, which could be fitted by two velocity components, systemic and redshifted components. The rotational temperature of OH was estimated to be Trot,OH >~ 175 K, tracing hot gas associated with the interaction of the fast nuclear outflow with dense molecular material around the nucleus., 25 pages, 9 figures, Accepted for publication in PASJ

We designed wide FoV (1 degree) Nasmyth optics which transformed the f/6 Nasmyth focus to f/1 at a 850GHz superconducting camera for a planning 10-m Ritchey-Chretien telescope. This optical system consists of reflecting mirrors at room temperature and a refractive lens at 4K. It enables us to carry out wide FoV imaging observations at the diffraction limit (Strehl ratio < 0.89) with a more than 100,000 pixel camera equipped in a 10-m telescope. The size of this system is reasonably compact (whole size:1.6 mx3.3 mx2.6 m, cryogenic part:0.7 mx0.7 mx1.0 m). The cryogenic part of this system such as vacuum window, cryogenic lens and IR block filters can be made with existing technologies at reasonable cost. The optical system can extend to the millimeter wave and the terahertz domain.
