Ecotourism is an important link between environmental conservation and poverty alleviation, as it generates income, empowers local communities, and provides educational benefits. This study focuses on the Lolab Valley in the remote Himalayan regions, emphasising its potential as one of India's premier sustainable tourism destinations. The primary goal of this study is to look into the future development of ecotourism in the area and to understand local perceptions and awareness of sustainable tourism between 2020 and 2023. To accomplish this, fieldwork was carried out that involved focus groups and semi-structured interviews, enabling a thorough investigation of the viewpoints of locals on sustainable tourism. To create a baseline understanding of the different types of tourism in the area, such as mountain, water, culinary, heritage, ethnographic, and creative tourism, the qualitative data that were gathered were examined. Based on our findings, travellers strongly favour sustainable travel over mass tourism. In particular, the option that participants preferred the most was mountain tourism (44%), followed by heritage tourism (20%), anthropological tourism (14%), water tourism (13%), and creative tourism (9%). This suggests that the community has undergone a substantial change in favour of sustainable tourism practices. This study demonstrates the significance of sustainable tourism over mass tourism and underscores the strong support of the local community for sustainable initiatives. Furthermore, it underscores the role of shared economies in mitigating poverty in the region. The Lolab Valley can make the most of its natural resources and maintain the welfare of its communities by promoting sustainable tourism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

MASS tourism , *PAPER arts , *SOCIAL movements , *POWER (Social sciences) , *TOURISM - Abstract
Over the last decade, the debate on tourism has become remarkably polarised. For some, tourism represents the stalwart of neoliberal capitalism, nested in strongly skewed power relations, characterized by exclusionary and resource-degrading agency, which need taming. For others, it remains genuinely coherent with its original promise to be a 'force for good'. This dichotomy is per se an eye-opener for critical reflections. Drawing on anthropology and critical geography literature and informed by longitudinal qualitative ethnographical research conducted in Barcelona between 2017 and 2024, this paper provides a set of critical reflections on the inconvenient truths about mass tourism, touristification and overtourism in the context of the current rising of anti-tourism activism in Southern European destinations. By offering a bird's eye view on the well traversed debate, the purpose of this state of the art paper is to stimulate further critical considerations on the uneven dynamics of tourism capital accumulation, the deep-rooted inequalities associated with it and the effects of tourism excesses, with mass tourism being investigated as a phenomenon, touristification as a process and overtourism as a regime. Domestic and international tourism, which was limited due to the pandemic, has exploded since 2023, with neighboring South Korea and Japan experiencing a high rate of mutual tourism exchanges. Ecotourism, which is differentiated from mass tourism, is receiving renewed attention. This study proposes a joint-certification standard that ensures high satisfaction and a desirable ecotourism foundation. Through stakeholder engagement and field research in representative areas, 19 certification criteria across 7 categories were developed, emphasizing resource conservation, tourist management, and community involvement. During this process, both nations proposed joint support measures for promotion and explanation and the creation of platforms for sharing expertise between regions. Importantly, the introduction of ecotourism joint-certification is expected to enhance international exchanges, increase tourist satisfaction, secure economic foundations for regions, and improve trust between countries. Tourism development has a significant contribution to the sustainable development of countries and regions through job creation, infrastructure development, cultural preservation, community empowerment, and revenue increase. Within this context, digitalization in the different facets of the tourism marketspace is a powerful tool that promotes competitiveness and economic growth, sustainability, innovation, and regional coherence. Digitalization also calls for the industry actors to have meaningful integration of novel technologies and practices in their operations and strategy. Despite the importance of digital technologies as a competitive antecedent for hospitality ventures, the extant research is mainly anchored on digital marketing and its associations with traditional mass tourism activity. Evidence on other facets of digitalization is far less appreciated, especially in the niche segment of the alternative tourism marketspace. Considering the above developments, our research aim is to assess the contribution of a digital business ecosystem, including a wide array of digital applications, to the competitiveness of the hospitality industry in Greece, with a focus on alternative tourism activities. Our research draws on data collected from a sample of local ventures to investigate the impact of digital technologies on tourists' attraction and company growth. In the main, our findings record the positive impacts of digitalization, with internet-based technologies standing out as the most influential medium to boost growth and hotels' sustainability. We contribute by showing that in cases where hospitality ventures remain digitally illiterate, they will most probably face severe competition losses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article discusses the contemporary entanglements of a growing immigration-industrial complex and a mass international tourism project in the Dominican Republic. At this nexus, Haitian im/migrant labor, and the labor of policing it, are intricately connected to the tourism economy and facilitated via politics of belonging. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork with young male-identifying Haitian and Dominican tourism workers in two coastal communities in the Dominican Republic, here I bring into focus the violence disproportionately faced by Haitian men and elucidate how experiences of belonging and exclusion interface with precarity and hope in a globalized marketplace that privileges the pleasure of international tourists. - Abstract
This article explores the geo-economic implications of China’s mass tourism strategy in Indonesia, particularly in Bali and Manado, since 2017. The interplay between China’s economic and political interests and Indonesia’s tourism development is evident. However, the unique China-style tourism approach, guided by non-resident local actors as cultural brokers, raises concerns about cultural mismatch. Our central argument emphasizes the crucial role of ‘people-to-people bonds’ in building meaningful connections between Chinese tourists and local actors in frequented areas. Fieldwork in Bali and Manado reveals that neglecting genuine affinity in people-to-people connectivity can create a diplomatic gap, potentially leading to negative responses from the Indonesian populace over time. The article highlights the need for a nuanced and culturally sensitive approach to mass tourism to ensure the sustainability of the China–Indonesia tourism partnership. While economic and political advantages are evident, overlooking the importance of authentic connections risks straining diplomatic relations and jeopardizing the long-term success of tourism initiatives. Prioritizing people-to-people exchange is a crucial factor in bridging cultural gaps and fostering a positive relationship between Chinese tourists and the Indonesian population. Astro-Tourism involves ‘using the natural resource of unpolluted night skies, and appropriate scientific knowledge for astronomical, cultural and environmental activities’. Astro-Tourism further includes specialised activities that differ from mass tourism, as tourists are exposed to knowledge-rich experiences. Well-known examples of Astro-Tourism destinations include Bryce Canyon National Park and Death Valley in the United States of America (USA). The Free State Gambling, Liquor and Tourism Authority (FSGLA) is the marketing arm of the Free State province and is responsible for attracting potential tourists to the province and solidifying the Free State as a destination of choice. Astro-Tourism has been identified as an opportunity to grow tourism in Bloemfontein and the Free State. This study found that Astro-Tourism is a niche product, and that the facilities currently on offer in Bloemfontein are in excellent condition and can potentially be further exposed to a broader audience through dedicated marketing initiatives and events. There has been extensive scholarly investigation of adventure tourism (demanding physical activities during travel, a natural environment, and risk, danger, and uncertainty) though less attention given to the experience of snowshoeing, camping, and hard adventure tourism in winter. This qualitative study provides a conceptualization of winter adventure tourism, and visual methodology (drawings by adult participants) based on the principle of "metaphorical truthfulness." An interpretation is offered of 8 drawings from 19 pairs of pictures made by participants at the beginning and end of a winter expedition to the Altai and Sayan mountains in Siberia. The bonfire phenomenon is the central point in the pictures and may be interpreted not only for its pragmatic use as a source of warmth and light, but as the center of the world, a symbolic and societal value of fire, and a cosmogonic element in the mythopoetic experiences of a hard winter adventure tourists. Pursuit of a deeper understanding of the spirituality of the tourist experience without religious faith (contact with a wild natural environment, frost, and hard physical activities) allows us to characterize this mode as an implicit religion, as a transformative experience changing horizons of the lives of tourists. Religious tourism is a growing phenomenon that is increasingly intertwined with cultural tourism, particularly in countries like Bulgaria, which possesses a wealthy heritage of religious interest. The Ancient City of Nessebar, a UNESCO World Heritage site with a rich religious history, provides a unique case study for examining this dynamic. This study employed a mixed-methods approach, including documentary analysis and case study methodology, to investigate the current state of religious tourism in Nessebar. The research revealed the underutilization of Nessebar's religious sites for tourism purposes, despite their potential value. A complex interplay between mass tourism, cultural preservation, and the decline of traditional religious practices was identified. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

What type of site-specific outdoor art structure is more likely to induce and catalyze artistic territorial services and for whom are these services intended for? Answering this question will help the understanding of territorial impacts of such art projects in European peripheric areas. This article is based on the analysis of a European database on 128 site-specific outdoor visual art structures informed by 36 distinct criteria like accessibility, location, institutional statuses and funding, initiator and audiences, site-specificness criteria, etc. A typology, produced by the statistical analysis of this database, shows that three main intelligible categories dominate site-specific art initiatives: 'art-washing sculpture parks', 'territorial art of peripheries' and 'eco-artistic front of art projects'. They all have different kinds of specific interactions, sometimes critical, with the local territory. They act differently as artistic territorial services (ATS) providers. ATS in Spain (Cesar Manrique artworks in Lanzarote Island) show how art is transformed into mass-tourism attraction; in France the Forêt d' Art Contemporain in Nouvelle-Aquitaine and in Greece, the Vovousa Festival in Epirus, show how art can reinforce territorial identity and environmental commitment, but with very mixed benefits to the local economy. In the sphere of mass tourism, ecotourism offers a method for promoting conservation and sustainability. Ecotourism differs from mass tourism as it includes recreational activities focusing on environmental conservation, education, and cultural experiences. Previous studies have explored tourists' awareness and attitudes towards ecotourism in various destinations but considering the unique cultural and geographical context of the destination, highlights the need for a destination-specific scale to inform sustainable decision-making. Tourist behavior and attitudes are critical to the tourism destination's long-term viability. This research aimed to study the attitude and awareness levels of tourists in Munnar towards environmentally sustainable tourism. Primary data were collected from the tourists adopting convenient sampling method. The survey results demonstrate that people have a positive attitude and are aware of the importance of environmentally friendly tourism. The findings also show that tourist awareness and attitudes toward Munnar's ecotourism and conservation are highly and strongly associated. Studying traveler understanding and attitudes toward sustainable tourism would be highly beneficial to local governments and ecotourism destination operators in responding to environmentally sustainable tourism and adapting to the need for better tourism practices. In Romania's tourism industry, in the last decade, following the European trend, small dimensioned accommodation units have appeared, bearing the name of boutique guesthouses or boutique hotels, depending on their accommodation capacity. The boutique guesthouses offer both accommodation services in rooms with traditional Romanian boyar characteristics, with Saxon and Szechuan influences, as well as food services with the same culinary characteristics. A particularity of these accommodation units is that each room had been furnishing according to a traditional noble theme, using either furniture that has been produced in Romanian workshops. Room's names have been inspired by the woody essences that can be found in the Romanian forests and a large part of the furniture is made of cherry, beech, fir, oak, elm wood. The specific architecture of the accommodation units has been established in 18th century specific to the rococo and baroque style, predominantly found in buildings constructions in Romanian towns where niche tourism is a small part of mass tourism industry. Mass tourism is profitable for businesses and managers of tourist attractions. However, there are negative impacts, including environmental damage and the emergence of visitor dissatisfaction. As a destination, Banyuwangi has a fairly high level of tourist visits. Cacalan Beach is one of the tourist attractions in Banyuwangi which has a high number of visits. Cacalan Beach has various activities. Based on these problems, it is necessary to analyze the carrying capacity of the Cacalan Beach environment. This study uses the environmental carrying capacity method in the form of physical, real, managerial, and effective carrying capacity to produce the maximum value of the capacity or carrying capacity of Cacalan Beach. The results showed that the physical carrying capacity of recreational activities was 1.731 people, 220 people for canoe, and 80 people for camping. Considering environmental factors, a real carrying capacity of 213 people was obtained for recreational activities. Moreover, by looking at the number of existing managers, a managerial carrying capacity value of 85% was obtained which resulted in an effective carrying capacity of 181 people. This value is smaller than the average number of visitors to Cacalan Beach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The popularity of must-see tourism destinations raises concerns about negative impacts including pollution, vandalism, and overcrowding in cultural heritage sites and the surrounding landscape. To address these challenges, understanding visitors' choice behavior and motivations is essential. This study aims to identify visitor segments based on their location choice and formulate policy recommendations to address overtourism challenges by examining visitors' choice behavior in a stated choice experiment. It provides evidence-based policy suggestions for mitigating mass tourism effects. The choice experiment was implemented in an online survey which was completed by a sample of 437 individuals who had paid a visit to Amsterdam in recent years. The results shed light on how individuals trade-off location attributes in making a choice between heritage destinations. A latent class analysis revealed three segments which can be labeled as cultural-attraction seekers, selective sightseers, and city-life lovers. The results show that crowdedness and entrance fees for additional experiences significantly influence visitors' location choices across all segments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The town of Sintra, located near Lisbon, has witnessed a significant increase in mass tourism in recent years. Both authors being lecturers and closely connected to tourism activities, have observed the changes in tourism and the impact it has on Sintra, which has become a problematic destination. The main goal of this text is to understand how mass tourism affects this popular destination and propose some containment measures to mitigate the problem while promoting heritage preservation. Methodology: The present exploratory study adopted a qualitative and descriptive case study approach. The revision of literature related to mass tourism was followed by data analysis based on interviews, and direct observation. Several interviews were conducted with different stakeholders, including those responsible for Sintra's heritage, DMCs and Tourist Guides Associations. After transcribing the interviews, the content was analysed, and the information was presented in a table. Results: The findings indicate that there are a few uncomplicated steps that can be taken to enhance the visiting experience at the palaces and sites in Sintra. These measures include recommending and promoting the use of technology and alternative tours, as well as providing information to visitors about less crowded sites. Improving the organization of visits to the monuments can also heighten the satisfaction of visitors. Research Limitations: This study faced limitations such as non-participation from important responsible entities, that did not respond to the interviews due to bureaucratic matters or lacking data. Originality: This exploratory study will provide valuable insight into the reality of tourism in Sintra, as no other similar study has been conducted to our knowledge. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In Chile the approaches to protection and management of glaciers are merely focused on a technical and scientific categorization, hindering other types of knowledge linked to territorial safeguarding. Not so much is known on practices of adaptation, relations, meanings and knowledge that indigenous populations have constructed around the Andean glaciers. Specifically, in the Andes of southern Chile, starting from participatory action research developed in the ancestral territory of the Mapuche people, where the Pichillancahue glacier is located, the knowledge and practices of such people in relation to the glacier have been studied. The objective is to articulate them in a strategy for the protection of their biocultural heritage. In such a strategy they merge and resignify scientific knowledge with their own kimün (knowledge), revealing local responses and the resilient potential of mapuche communities related to this glacier. All this, in a territory that faces conflicts and diverse territorial dynamics, which are a product of climate change, water stress and the expansion of capital through new axes of accumulation such as mass tourism. This article examines the sources of Turkish, Iranian, and Saudi soft power in the Middle East through the utilization of Joseph Nye's soft power concept. The study is based on three claims. The first claim argues that there exists an increasing discrepancy between espoused values and actual practices in Turkey, Iran, and Saudi Arabia at home, which may undermine their soft power. The second claim contends that cognizant of the fact that the Palestinian cause is a major concern for most of the Middle Eastern people, all of the three states pursue an active foreign policy to alleviate the plight of the Palestinians. Finally, the last claim upholds that Turkey, Iran, and Saudi Arabia have been benefitting, albeit to varying extents, from high culture products such as education and popular culture products such as mass entertainment and tourism to appeal to the public in the Middle East. This paper analyzes the events that originated an integrated water resources management (IWRM) model called Consorcio de Aguas de la Marina Baja (CAMB), in the province of Alicante (Spain), in 1978. The impact of tourism and population growth in the second half of the 20th century motivated the need for new management formulas seeking a balance between available resources and a greater need for water resources. The emergence of mass tourism in Benidorm at the end of the 1950s generated a great imbalance between the needs and availability of water resources. Also considering the effect of periods of severe drought, the solution to the deficit was found in the principles of institutional economics and circular water management. Water infrastructure and technology are elements of great importance in this model, allowing the exchange of natural water for reclaimed water, as a result of previous agreements between traditional irrigators and supply users of coastal populations. Its success has guaranteed the coexistence of traditional agriculture and the consolidated tourism activity, making possible the conservation of the cultural landscape. The historical and economic analysis of the model that led to the creation of CAMB can be applied to other regions facing similar challenges. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cities, in particular those of historical value, are popular destinations for mass tourism. The urban space is often the main cause of conflicts, at the heart of which lie conflicting interests, attitudes and needs relating to the way this space is utilized. The aim of the research described in this article is to identify the intensity of conflicts between residents, tourists and the tourism sector. The research was conducted in 2020. The statistical analysis of the obtained data included questionnaires from 386 respondents. Analysis was conducted of the conflicts that arose among tourism sector players, who were classified into groups – tourist entrepreneurs, residents, and local authorities. Respondents often indicated conflict arising between tourists and residents, and between tourist sector entrepreneurs and residents. In the opinion of respondents, conflicts were the result of result of varying structures in the hierarchy of values and of differences in attitudes towards the city. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

DIGITAL communications ,DIGITAL media ,INTERNATIONAL economic relations ,TOURISM ,MASS tourism ,INTERNATIONAL tourism ,TOURIST attractions - Abstract
Tourism plays a crucial role in international economic relations and is an integral part of the global economic development. Georgia, with its rich cultural heritage, unique nature, and historical significance, is a distinguished tourist destination. During the Soviet era, the country had an extensive network of mass tourism, resort treatments, and recreational facilities, and after independence, it quickly became a rapidly growing tourist destination. In the 21st century, as the world became more interconnected through digital media, the impact of media communication phenomena on the tourism industry reached unprecedented heights. Information spreading rapidly in the digital landscape is critical for shaping perception and attracting tourists. Positive information flows can strengthen Georgia's image as a tourist and culturally rich country. Conversely, negative information can deter potential tourists. Research in Georgia on media communication has primarily focused on political or social phenomena, and informational (PR) campaigns in the tourism sector have never been a subject of special research, and thus, analysis and evaluation. The present study examined PR campaigns conducted by Georgia's tourism sector between 2019- 2023 and their impact on tourist inflows, highlighting factors influencing Polish tourists' perceptions of Georgia. Using mixed methods (narrative and quantitative content analysis, comparative analysis, case study), it studied tourist inflows during the reporting period, PR materials, articles, blogs, posts, and other social media content about Georgia. The findings indicate that the strategic marketing and PR efforts implemented, especially through digital media, significantly increased the visibility and attractiveness of Georgia as a tourist destination, contributing to substantial growth in tourism revenues and international visitors. The research emphasizes the significant contribution of media campaigns in portraying a positive image of Georgia. Intensive marketing and PR campaigns implemented after the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic led to a noticeable increase in the number of international tourists and tourism revenues, as evidenced by the analysis of economic indicators, highlighting the sector's resilience and its critical role in the national economy. The study concludes with recommendations for maintaining and increasing Georgia's growth as a top tourist destination, emphasizing the need for digital marketing, targeted marketing campaigns, and investments in tourism infrastructure and services. These initiatives are crucial for maintaining Georgia's competitive advantage in the global tourism market and ensuring sustainable development [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

CENTRAL economic planning , *SUSTAINABLE tourism , *HERITAGE tourism , *ECOTOURISM , *MASS tourism , *SOCIAL sustainability - Abstract
This article explores sustainable development challenges in light of growing over-tourism trends, focusing on the design, planning, and construction of tourism infrastructures. It explores the historical evolution of seaside resorts and the social and architectural concepts employed in creating leisure spaces, intending to project coastal landscapes’ futures. The article examines the dual nature of tourism and leisure, acknowledging their status as one of the fastest-growing industries globally, while recognizing their potentially destructive impact on cultural and natural heritage. Environmentalists actively explore alternative models that integrate social, economic, and ecological considerations as awareness grows regarding the need for sustainability in tourism. However, spatial considerations in sustainable tourism have been relatively overlooked. Thus, the article seeks to address this gap by emphasizing the importance of incorporating spatial perspectives in the design and planning of new tourism infrastructures. The research centers on Croatia as a case study of the Mediterranean region’s cultural and natural heritage. Globally, coastal landscapes are grappling with the repercussions of mass tourism, initiated in the 1960s and persisting into the 1980s, transforming coasts into overconsumed, fragmented entertainment zones. Croatia, characterized by a “fertile delay” due to its centrally planned economy and the Yugoslavian war in 1990, has emerged as a popular global travel destination in recent decades. However, this growth has endangered its pristine coastal landscapes. By analyzing Croatia’s experience, this article seeks to derive lessons from historical contexts to guide future coastal planning strategies aimed at providing insights considering the complex interplay between architecture, leisure, society, and ecology. Academic tourism refers to travel activities in higher education contexts. This study has focused on the University of Barcelona (Spain) as an outbound market for international academic tourism. Three specific objectives were set to investigate the demographic profile of outgoing students, their tourist behaviour, and the impacts of their academic mobility. This mixed methods exploratory research entailed conducting a survey among a convenience sample of 70 outgoing students, whose responses were processed through descriptive and inferential SPSS statistical analyses. Additionally, a virtual focus group took place with 3 outgoing students and 3 members of staff from higher education international offices. Content analysis was carried out by means of QDA Miner Lite. The main results indicate that the major push factor was personal growth, followed by the search for new experiences, and linguistic-cultural development, while the principal pull factors were the local language, culture, and tourist attractions. Students mostly stayed at residence halls and rented apartments, used external catering services two or three times a week, and public transport was frequently used. Cultural, nightlife, and gastronomic activities were prioritised. For the majority, monthly expenditure on accommodation ranged between €200 and more than €800. Other additional expenses exceeded €200 for approximately half of our respondents, and nearly a third received some institutional financial support. Study-abroad sojourns enhanced students’ autonomy, self-confidence, responsibility, self-knowledge, tolerance, open-mindedness, and knowledge of the local culture. The international mobility experience predominantly met and even surpassed the participants’ previous expectations. In conclusion, our findings support the presumed sustainability of academic tourism in comparison to mass tourism. However, the limited representativeness of the sample must be acknowledged, so this study should be considered as a first step towards future expanded investigations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

POETICS , *TRAVEL writing , *MASS tourism , *CULTURAL relations , *COBRAS , *IDEALISM - Abstract
Northern Fennoscandia entered Christian Dotremont's (1922–1979) imagination in 1956. The Belgian avant‐gardist was comfortable in Central‐European artistic milieus through his involvement in CoBrA (1948–1951), but a total of 12 journeys to Sápmi between 1956 and 1978 had a profound effect on his creative work, especially the logograms he is best known for. This article studies Dotremont's travel writings and logograms as site‐specific forms of writing, which can be seen as precursors to ecopoetic approaches. Dotremont's journeys took place at a cultural turning point, when ethnographers had made their field trips but mass tourism was still in its embryonic state in Sápmi. His Sápmi‐inspired travel writings reveal how the idealism related to a hyperborean north initially intrigued him while he sought to elude modernity. Dotremont's cultural exchanges in Sápmi were non‐artistic but manifested in his art and writing. Sápmi brought about an ecological awakening through awe that was not sublimated but a lived experience. Dotremont immersed himself in Sápmi, with fundamental repercussions to his creative exploits. STABLE isotopes , *MASS tourism , *BIOINDICATORS , *WATER sampling , *MARINE algae - Abstract
Bahía de Zihuatanejo, Mexico, exhibits disturbances in its rocky shores due to large amounts of nutrients that enter the sea due to urbanization and mass tourism. These nutrients are traced in macroalgae using stable isotopes. The objective of this study was to use 4 species of macroalgae as bioindicators to infer nutrient sources in the system through δ15N and the elemental nitrogen (N) content. Samples were collected in the rainy and dry seasons of 2021 at 3 sites in the Zihuatanejo region: La Madera, Las Salinas, and La Majahua. Water samples were taken at each site and season to determine nitrate (NO3) and phosphate (PO4) concentrations. Isotopic signals and N content were evaluated in Hypnea spinella, Padina gymnospora, Ulva intestinalis, and Ulva lactuca for each site and season. The concentrations of NO3 and PO4, which were highest at Las Salinas and showed no differences between La Madera and La Majahua, were similar to those previously reported for the region. The highest δ15N signals were found in U. intestinalis and H. spinella at Las Salinas (16.12‰ and 15.38‰, respectively) and La Madera (15.12‰ and 13.58‰, respectively) and were close to the isotopic wastewater signal. In La Majahua, low signals were obtained for H. spinella (13.54‰), P. gymnospora (9.24‰), and U. lactuca (8.24‰), with values that were close to the isotopic signal of nutrient-rich oceanic waters. The N content varied depending on the species and site, although it was generally higher at Las Salinas. The isotopic signals agreed with those reported for anthropogenic and natural nutrient-enriched coasts. The species U. intestinalis and H. spinella can be used as bioindicators of anthropogenic disturbance due to sewage discharge in the region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The existing research on the impact of crowding on visitors' experiences has yielded mixed results, mainly due to inadequate conceptualization and measurement of the phenomenon. To address this issue, we adopted a mixed‐methods approach. We first conducted a qualitative study (Study 1, focus group based) to understand (i) how consumers perceive crowding at leisure places, (ii) the sources of crowding (spatial or social), and (iii) its effects on their experiences and future behaviors. For Study 2 we collected quantitative data through a survey (n = 537 respondents) to estimate the association between objective and subjective measures of crowding, the relative contribution of human and spatial crowding to visitors' overall crowding perceptions and its impact on satisfaction and behavioral intentions. The results indicated there is a weak association between objective and perceived human crowding, which makes subjective measures more appropriate for assessing crowdedness. A formative two‐dimensional (human and spatial) conceptualization of crowding more adequately captures visitors' perceptions. The influence of each dimension is context‐dependent, such that human crowding is more problematic for visitors to monuments, while cruise ship tourists are less tolerant of spatial crowding. The findings also revealed that crowding negatively affects visitors' satisfaction, while its impact on behavioral intentions is mostly nonsignificant for cruise ship tourists. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article discusses Katerina Antoniou's book on tourism as a form of international relations, exploring its potential to promote peace, justice, and sustainability. Antoniou emphasizes the need for more peacebuilding trips and community-based tourism, critiquing mass tourism for its limited engagement with local communities. While the book lacks detailed examples, it offers theoretical discussions on peacebuilding and critical cosmopolitanism, making it a valuable resource for understanding the relationship between tourism and peace.
