Abstract Background This study aimed to assess possible changes in mineral intake correlation between family pairs over time. Mineral intake was measured using a food frequency questionnaire. Methods FCOR command of the Statistical Analysis for Genetic Epidemiology software was used to determine the correlation coefficients of minerals in relative pairs. Our first analysis was conducted on adults (n = 748) who had four complete dietary and familial data on the third to sixth surveys of the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study. In addition, we assessed respectively the 3-year, 6-year, and 9-year changes in mineral correlations among populations with n = 1773, n = 1672, and n = 1352 samples with two mineral intake measurements. Results Most of the mineral correlations among various pairs were found to be in the same direction in both four and two measurement analyses. Among the mother-daughter and brother-sister pairs, there was a decreasing correlation for all minerals over time. In father-daughter, we observed decreasing or regression to the mean of correlations. For father-son and spouse pairs, the correlations between minerals showed a decreasing trend or regression to the mean over time, whereas increased for sodium in the father-son and phosphorus in the spouse pair. For mother-son and brother-brother pairs, iron intake correlation increased and other minerals correlations generally showed a decreasing trend or regression to the mean. Among sister-sister pairs, the correlation of calcium and phosphorus decreased, however, the correlation of chromium, selenium, sodium, and potassium increased. Conclusion Our study revealed a decreasing trend in correlation or regression towards the mean over time for most minerals in family pairs.

Abstract Background Familial dietary intake can be influenced by both genetic and environmental factors; the current study aimed to examine the role of these two factors on dietary intake by investigating the resemblance in energy, nutrient, and food group intake among spouses and siblings in twin and family-based studies. Methods The online literature databases, including PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library were systematically searched up to September 2024. The pooled correlation coefficient (r) of studies was calculated using Fisher’s z and standard error (SE) of z’s of all studies and our final results were reported in six groups including non-twin siblings, monozygotic (MZ) twins, dizygotic (DZ) twins, all-twins, all siblings, and spouse. Results Our findings on 30 observational studies indicate that siblings, especially MZ twins, tend to have similar dietary intake, with high correlations for vegetables (r: 0.59), red meat (r: 0.58), and fruits (r: 0.56). Among DZ twins, the lowest correlations were observed for eggs (r: 0.07), soft drinks (r: 0.14), and daily intake of simple carbohydrates (r: 0.17). DZ twins did not show significant differences in dietary resemblance compared to non-twin siblings. Among spouses, the highest correlations for dietary intake were found for polyunsaturated fats (r: 0.41), saturated fats (r: 0.40), and total fats (r: 0.39), while the lowest correlation was for protein intake (r: 0.24). Conclusions While the greatest similarity in dietary intake was observed among MZ twins, no significant difference in dietary intake similarity was noted between DZ twins and non-twin siblings. Furthermore, spouses exhibited a significant degree of similarity in their dietary consumption. Therefore, dietary intake is shaped by a complex interplay of genetic and environmental factors, warranting further investigation to validate these observations.

Abstract Background/Aim Familial resemblance in dietary patterns has been a subject of interest, with both genetic and environmental factors playing crucial roles. This study aims to investigate trends in macronutrient intake correlations over a 9-year period among different familial pairs, including parent-offspring, siblings, and spouses, using data from the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study (TLGS). Methods This longitudinal study, conducted within the framework of the TLGS, analyzed data from 1,814 families over a 9-year period. Dietary intakes were assessed using a validated 168-item food frequency questionnaire. Macronutrient intakes were calculated and adjusted for age. Familial correlations were estimated using intraclass correlation coefficients for various familial pairs (parent-offspring, siblings, and spouses) across four consecutive surveys. Changes in correlations were analyzed over 3-year, 6-year, and 9-year intervals, as well as across all four surveys, to determine overall trends in macronutrient intake correlations. Results The results revealed diverse trends in intake correlations for carbohydrates, proteins, fats, and specific fatty acids across familial relationships. Parent-offspring dyads exhibited varied patterns, with some nutrients showing regression to the mean. Sister-sister pairs demonstrated strengthening correlations for energy, carbohydrates, fats, and saturated fatty acids over time. Conversely, brother-sister pairs displayed weakening correlations for most macronutrients, particularly energy, proteins, cholesterol, and fiber. Spouse correlations tended towards regression to the mean for energy, carbohydrates, and fats, and fiber. Conclusions The present study illuminates the dynamic nature of familial dietary correlations over time. The contrasting trends between sister-sister and brother-sister dyads suggest a significant influence of gender on shared dietary patterns. These findings underscore the complex interplay of genetic and environmental factors in shaping family dietary behaviors and highlight the importance of considering both gender and relationship type when examining familial nutritional habits.

Pharmaceutical waste disposal is a significant problem for the global healthcare system. It poses a threat to water safety, which is already a challenge as 1 out of 3 people still lack access to safe drinking water. We conducted a thorough literature review of relevant articles published between 2000 and 2023. Our review scrutinized 107 studies, each of which applied pre-set inclusion and exclusion criteria to ensure high-quality research. The focus of our interest was on the health risks posed by pharmaceutical compounds in waste. We also evaluated recycling methods and proposed practical measures for proper education and the implementation of strict legislation to address this issue. Pharmaceutical compounds have been found in water resources worldwide. These compounds can have negative effects on multiple organs and it’s important to remove them from water resources. However, water quality varies globally due to limitations in accessibility and budget for water purification and recycling efforts. Comprehensive studies are needed to identify drinking water’s most common pharmaceutical residues and develop effective removal strategies. Proper disposal of pharmaceuticals is crucial to protect water resources and ensure clean drinking water. This requires raising awareness, educating the public population, implementing strict regulations, and collaborating among stakeholders.

Abstract Maturity-onset diabetes of the young (MODY) is an uncommon monogenic type of diabetes mellitus. Detecting genetic variants for MODY is a necessity for precise diagnosis and treatment. The majority of MODY genetic predisposition has been documented in European populations and a lack of information is present in Iranians which leads to misdiagnosis as a consequence of defects in unknown variants. In this study, using genetic variant information of 20,002 participants from the family-based TCGS (Tehran Cardiometabolic Genetic Study) cohort, we evaluated the genetic spectrum of MODY in Iran. We concentrated on previously discovered MODY-causing genes. Genetic variants were evaluated for their pathogenicity. We discovered 6 variants that were previously reported in the ClinVar as pathogenic/likely pathogenic (P/LP) for MODY in 45 participants from 24 families (INS in 21 cases, GCK in 13, HNF1B in 8, HNF4A, HNF1A, and CEL in 1 case). One potential MODY variant with Uncertain Risk Allele in ClinVar classification was also identified, which showed complete disease penetrance (100%) in four subjects from one family. This is the first family-based study to define the genetic spectrum and estimate the prevalence of MODY in Iran. The discovered variants need to be investigated by additional studies.

Abstract This study introduces PDMotion, a mobile application comprising 11 digital tests, including those adapted from the MDS-Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (MDS-UPDRS) Part III and novel assessments, for remote Parkinson's Disease (PD) motor symptoms evaluation. Employing machine learning techniques on data from 50 PD patients and 29 healthy controls, PDMotion achieves accuracies of 0.878 for PD status prediction and 0.715 for severity assessment. A post-hoc explanation model is employed to assess the importance of features and tasks in diagnosis and severity evaluation. Notably, novel tasks that are not adapted from MDS-UPDRS Part III like the circle drawing, coordination test, and alternative tapping test are found to be highly important, suggesting digital assessments for PD can go beyond digitizing existing tests. The alternative tapping test emerges as the most significant task. Using its features alone achieves prediction accuracies comparable to the full task set, underscoring its potential as an independent screening tool. This study addresses a notable research gap by digitalizing a wide array of tests, including novel ones, and conducting a comparative analysis of their feature and task importance. These insights provide guidance for task selection and future development in PD mobile assessments, a field previously lacking such comparative studies.

Abstract In this study, silver-tungsten oxide core–shell nanoparticles (Ag–WO3 NPs) were synthesized by pulsed laser ablation in liquid employing a (1.06 µm) Q-switched Nd:YAG laser, at different Ag colloidal concentration environment (different core concentration). The produced Ag–WO3 core–shell NPs were subjected to characterization using UV–visible spectrophotometry, X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy, electrical analysis, and photoluminescence PL. The UV–visible spectra exhibited distinct absorption peaks at around 200 and 405 nm, which attributed to the occurrence of surface Plasmon resonance of Ag NPs and WO3 NPs, respectively. The absorbance values of the Ag–WO3 core–shell NPs increased as the core concentrations rose, while the band gap decreased by 2.73–2.5 eV, The (PL) results exhibited prominent peaks with a central wavelength of 456, 458, 458, 464, and 466 nm. Additionally, the PL intensity of the Ag–WO3-NP samples increased proportionally with the concentration of the core. Furthermore, the redshift seen at the peak of the PL emission band may be attributed to the quantum confinement effect. EDX analysis can verify the creation process of the Ag–WO3 core–shell nanostructure. XRD analysis confirms the presence of Ag and WO3 (NPs). The TEM images provided a good visualization of the core-spherical shell structure of the Ag–WO3 core–shell NPs. The average size of the particles ranged from 30.5 to 89 (nm). The electrical characteristics showed an increase in electrical conductivity from (5.89 × 10−4) (Ω cm)−1 to (9.91 × 10−4) (Ω cm)−1, with a drop in average activation energy values of (0.155 eV) and (0.084 eV) at a concentration of 1.6 μg/mL of silver.

Its heightened expression has been intimately linked to the initiation and severity of diverse autoimmune diseases, spanning rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, systemic sclerosis (SSc), inflammatory bowel disease, autoimmune diabetes, and even SARS-CoV-2 infection. Operating as a co-stimulator of T cell activity, DPP4 propels T cell proliferation by binding adenosine deaminase (ADA), thereby augmenting the breakdown of adenosine—an influential inhibitor of T cell proliferation. However, the discovery of a wide range of DPP4 inhibitors has shown promise in alleviating these diseases’ signs, symptoms, and severity. The available DPP4 inhibitors have demonstrated significant effectiveness in blocking DPP4 activity. Based on the characterization of their binding mechanisms, three distinct groups of DPP4 inhibitors have been identified: saxagliptin, alogliptin, and sitagliptin, each representing a different class. Elevated levels of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) expression are associated with producing various coronavirus peptidases. With its anti-inflammatory properties, Sitagliptin may assist COVID-19 patients in preventing and managing cytokine storms. This comprehensive review delves into the burgeoning realm of DPP4 inhibitors as therapeutic interventions for diverse autoimmune diseases. ABSTRACT Objective Sodium hypochlorite solution (NaOCl) is an effective canal irrigant but interferes with the mechanical features of dentin and the bonding capability of adhesives when restoring endodontically treated teeth. This study evaluated whether access cavity resin sealing before using canal irrigant would augment the resistance of endodontically treated anterior teeth against fracture. Methods Sixty maxillary incisors underwent endodontic treatment in five groups (n = 12). Irrigation with 5.25% NaOCl and 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) was performed in all groups except for Group 5. After root canal obturation, in Group 1, the access cavity was kept unrestored. In Group 2, immediate restoration after obturation was achieved. For Group 3, delayed restoration after 1 week was provided. In Group 4 (pre‐sealed), before canal irrigation, the dentin surface of access cavities was sealed using self‐adhesive composite resin (Vertise Flow) and then restored after obturation. In Group 5, which was saline irrigated, immediate restoration was performed. After storage and thermal cycling for 5000 cycles at 5°C–55°C with a dwell time of 15 s and a transfer time of 5 s, teeth were statically loaded by a universal testing machine until a fracture occurred. Abstract Dyslipidemia, as a metabolic risk factor, with the strongest and most heritable independent cause of cardiovascular diseases worldwide. We investigated the familial transmission patterns of dyslipidemia through a longitudinal family-based cohort, the Tehran Cardiometabolic Genetic Study (TCGS) in Iran. We enrolled 18,729 individuals (45% were males) aged > 18 years (mean: 38.15 (15.82)) and observed them over five 3-year follow-up periods. We evaluated the serum concentrations of total cholesterol, triglyceride, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol with the first measurement among longitudinal measures and the average measurements (AM) of the five periods. Heritability analysis was conducted using a mixed-effect framework with likelihood-based and Bayesian approaches. The periodic prevalence and heritability of dyslipidemia were estimated to be 65.7 and 42%, respectively. The likelihood of an individual having at least one dyslipidemic parent reveals an OR = 6.94 (CI 5.28–9.30) compared to those who do not have dyslipidemic parents. The most considerable intraclass correlation of family members was for the same-sex siblings, with ICC ~ 25.5%. For serum concentrations, heritability ranged from 33.64 to 60.95%. Taken together, these findings demonstrate that familial transmission of dyslipidemia in the Tehran population is strong, especially within the same-gender siblings. According to previous reports, the heritability of dyslipidemia in this population is considerably higher than the global average.

Background/Objectives: Examining the risk of depression among patients with diabetes is crucial for understanding the mental health burden of this chronic condition. This study examined the likelihood of depression severity among participants in the National Health And Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2005 to 2020, based on glycemic control status. Methods: Depression severity was categorized into three levels using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), and glycemic control status was categorized into five groups based on prior diabetes diagnoses and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels. Using multinomial logistic regression models, the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CIs) of various severities of depression by glycemic control status were calculated after comprehensive adjustments. Results: Out of 76,496 NHANES participants from 2005 to 2020, 37,037 individuals who met our inclusion criteria were analyzed. The likelihood of depression in individuals with prediabetes was not significantly different from those with normoglycemia. In contrast, participants with diabetes had a higher likelihood of having depression versus individuals with normoglycemia even when they kept their HbA1c within the normal range (lower than 5.7%). Among individuals with diabetes, those with HbA1c < 5.7% had a higher likelihood of mild depression (OR: 1.54, 95%CI: 1.02–2.34), while having HbA1c ≥ 10.0% was significantly associated with a greater likelihood of moderate to severe depression (OR: 1.53, 95%CI: 1.07–2.19) compared to those with HbA1c levels of 5.7–10.0%. Conclusions: Our findings highlight the need for a holistic approach to diabetes care that includes mental health considerations, especially for those who are at the extremes of the HbA1c spectrum.

Abstract Background Genome-wide association studies in Western countries indicate a considerable impact of variations in vitamin D binding protein (GC) genes on serum concentrations of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D). We aimed to investigate an association between rs2282679 polymorphism in GC and vitamin D deficiency. Methods A cross-sectional study conducted in the framework of the Tehran Cardio-Metabolic Genetic Study (TCGS) cohort. A total of 1568 participants aged > 18 years were randomly selected, and their 25(OH) D concentration was measured. Vitamin D deficiency was assessed concerning rs2282679 by descriptive and multivariate analysis, odds ratio (OR), and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) calculated. Since the interaction term between rs2282679 and recruitment season was significant, we performed regression analysis separately for individuals whose blood was taken in high sunny and those whose blood was drawn in the low sunny season. Results The rs2282679 polymorphism was in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (P > 0.05) in the studied population. The serum concentration of 25(OH) D median was 15.0 ng/mL, and the prevalence of VDD was 27.8%. The presence of the G allele in rs2282679 increases the risk of VDD in additive (OR = 1.35, 95% CI: 1.06–1.73) and dominant (OR = 1.33, 95% CI: 1.06–1.68) genetic models. After separating participants based on the recruitment season, the unfavorable association was observed in the additive and dominant only in the low sunny season. Conclusion The finding of the current study indicates that the GC rs2282679 SNP is associated with vitamin D deficiency. It seems that the impact of risk allele increased in the low sunny season when UV exposure has been declined.

Abstract This study aimed to investigate the interaction of the healthy eating index (HEI) and the dietary approach to stop hypertension (DASH) diet scores with FTO polymorphisms in relation to change in obesity traits. A total of 4480 subjects aged ≥ 18 years were selected from participants of the Tehran lipid and glucose study and followed-up 3 years. Selected polymorphisms (rs1421085, rs1121980, rs8050136) were genotyped and genetic risk score (GRS) was computed. HEI and DASH scores were computed based on dietary data. Changes in body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist to hip ratio (WHR) and visceral adiposity index (VAI) were measured. Higher adherence to both DASH and HEI scores were increased with higher ages. Individuals with high GRS had a lower change in BMI when they had higher adherence to HEI, compared to subjects with lower HEI score (P trend = 0.01). Change in WC in participants in the fourth quartile of HEI score in minor allele carriers of FTO variants was lower compared to the first quartile; conversely, higher adherence to the DASH score by this genotypic group was related to increase in WC. No significant interaction was seen between FTO polymorphisms and both diet scores regarding changes in any of obesity traits. In conclusion, in individuals with high GRS higher adherence to HEI score was associated with lower change in BMI and WC, while higher adherence to DASH diet was associated with higher change in WC, compared to individuals with lower adherence to both scores.

Abstract Background We aimed to investigate the familial resemblance of dietary intakes, including energy and nutrients, and the family-based heritability of dietary intake in different age-sex dyads of the Tehran cardiometabolic genetic study. Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted on 9,798 participants, aged ≥ 18 years, with complete data in each of the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth surveys of the Tehran Cardiometabolic Genetic study, who were eligible to enter the current study based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Nutrient intake was determined using a valid and reliable food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). FCOR command of the S.A.G.E. software was used to estimate the intra-class correlation coefficients of all relative pairs to verify the family resemblance of dietary nutrient intakes. Classical likelihood-based is used to assess the family-based heritability of dietary nutrient traits. Results There were 4338 families with a mean family size of 3.20 ± 2.89, including 1 to 32 members (2567 constituent pedigrees and 1572 singletons) and 3627 sibships. The mean ± SD age of participants was 42.0 ± 15.2 years, and 44.5% were males. The heritability of nutrient intake ranged from 3 to 21%. The resemblance degree of energy intake and most nutrients between spouses or between parents and children is weak to moderate; however, a high resemblance of intake was observed for some food components, especially among spouses, including trans fatty acids (TFAs) (r:0.70), chromium (r:0.44), fiber(r:0.35), pantothenic acid (r:0.31), and vitamin C(r:0.31). Based on our findings, the resemblance of nutrient intake in spouses was greater than in parent-offspring. The similarity in parent–offspring nutrient intake was different, and the correlation in mother-girls nutrient intakes was greater than other parent–child correlations. Also, the lowest resemblance in nutrient intake was observed among siblings. Conclusions Our findings suggested a weak-to-moderate similarity between the nutrient intakes of parents and offspring. The resemblance degree in nutrient intake varied between different family pairs; the strongest correlation of nutrients was observed between spouses, which includes TFAs, chromium, fiber, pantothenic acid, and vitamin C. The lowest correlation of nutrients was between siblings, such as carbohydrates, thiamine, niacin, and vitamin K. An individual's nutrient intake can somewhat be influenced by genetics, family relationships, and the effects of parents, although the significant influence of environmental factors should not be ignored.

IoT-based Sensors networks play a pivotal role in improving air quality monitoring in the Middle East. They provide real-time data, enabling precise tracking of pollution trends, informed decision-making, and increased public awareness. Air quality and dust pollution in the Middle East region may leads to various health issues, particularly among vulnerable populations. IoT-based Sensors networks help mitigate health risks by offering timely and accurate air quality data. Air pollution affects not only human health but also the region’s ecosystems and contributes to climate change. The economic implications of deteriorated air quality include healthcare costs and decreased productivity, underscore the need for effective monitoring and mitigation. IoT-based data can guide policymakers to align with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to health, clean water, and climate action. The conventional monitor based standard air quality instruments provide limited spatial coverage so there is strong need to continue research integrated with low-cost sensor technologies to make air quality monitoring more accessible, even in resource-constrained regions. IoT-based Sensors networks monitoring helps in understanding these environmental impacts. Among these IoT-based Sensors networks, sensors are of vital importance. With the evolution of sensors technologies, different types of sensors materials are available. Among this carbon based sensors are widely used for air quality monitoring. Carbon nanomaterial-based sensors (CNS) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as adsorbents exhibit unique capabilities in the measurement of air pollutants. These sensors are used to detect gaseous pollutants that includes oxides of nitrogen and Sulphur, and ozone, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). This study provides comprehensive review of integration of carbon nanomaterials based sensors in IoT based network for better air quality monitoring and exploring the potential of machine learning and artificial intelligence for advanced data analysis, pollution source identification, integration of satellite and ground-based networks and future forecasting to design effective mitigation strategies. By prioritizing these recommendations, the Middle East and other regions, can further leverage IoT-based systems to improve air quality monitoring, safeguard public health, protect the environment, and contribute to sustainable development in the region.

IntroductionLow energy availability (LEA) is a state of inadequate energy reserves that results from a negative energy balance. This condition can lead to severe health risks such as amenorrhea and osteoporosis. Various causes for LEA, such as eating disorders and exercise addiction, have been reported in the literature. However, data in Saudi Arabia are lacking. This cross-sectional study measures the prevalence of LEA, eating disorders, and exercise addiction among adult females in Saudi Arabia and identifies possible associated risk factors.MethodsThe sample comprised 119 female athletes who filled out an online survey adapted from the LEA in Females Questionnaire, the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire, and the Exercise Addiction Inventory.ResultsParticipants showed a high prevalence of LEA (66.4%), eating disorder (33.6%), and exercise addiction (10.1%), confirming the association between normal weight and LEA in females living in Saudi Arabia (p < 0.00).Discussion and conclusionWith an increasing number of females in the country interested in following a healthy lifestyle, there is a need to raise the awareness of the population on the issues of LEA, eating disorders, and exercise addiction and their effects on the body by developing educational programs about energy intake and healthy physical activity routines.

Objective: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a complex multifactorial disorder that considerably burdens healthcaresystems. We aim to classify MetS using regularized machine learning models in the presence of the risk variants ofGCKR, BUD13 and APOA5, and environmental risk factors.Materials and Methods: A cohort study was conducted on 2,346 cases and 2,203 controls from eligible TehranCardiometabolic Genetic Study (TCGS) participants whose data were collected from 1999 to 2017. We used differentregularization approaches [least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO), ridge regression (RR), elasticnet(ENET), adaptive LASSO (aLASSO), and adaptive ENET (aENET)] and a classical logistic regression (LR) modelto classify MetS and select influential variables that predict MetS. Demographics, clinical features, and commonpolymorphisms in the GCKR, BUD13, and APOA5 genes of eligible participants were assessed to classify TCGSparticipant status in MetS development. The models’ performance was evaluated by 10-repeated 10-fold crossvalidation.Various assessment measures of sensitivity, specificity, classification accuracy, and area under the receiveroperating characteristic curve (AUC-ROC) and AUC-precision-recall (AUC-PR) curves were used to compare themodels.Results: During the follow-up period, 50.38% of participants developed MetS. The groups were not similar in terms ofbaseline characteristics and risk variants. MetS was significantly associated with age, gender, schooling years, bodymass index (BMI), and alternate alleles in all the risk variants, as indicated by LR. A comparison of accuracy, AUCROC,and AUC-PR metrics indicated that the regularization models outperformed LR. Regularized machine learningmodels provided comparable classification performances, whereas the aLASSO model was more parsimonious andselected fewer predictors.Conclusion: Regularized machine learning models provided more accurate and parsimonious MetS classifyingmodels. These high-performing diagnostic models can lay the foundation for clinical decision support tools that usegenetic and demographical variables to locate individuals at high risk for MetS.

Background Chronic constipation is common among children worldwide. Constipation includes functional constipation (FC) and organic constipation (OC). The early recognition of the causes of childhood constipation and its subsequent complications is important. Purpose This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and causes of childhood constipation and compare the clinical characteristics, treatment, and outcomes of children with FC versus OC to identify the predictive factors. Methods This retrospective cross-sectional study analyzed children with FC or OC diagnosed in pediatric gastroenterology clinics, Salmaniya Medical Complex, Bahrain, 2017–2021. The Rome IV criteria were used to define FC. Results A total of 7,287 gastroenterology appointments were attended by 4,346 children during the study period. Abstract Background Missing data is a pervasive problem in longitudinal data analysis. Several single-imputation (SI) and multiple-imputation (MI) approaches have been proposed to address this issue. In this study, for the first time, the function of the longitudinal regression tree algorithm as a non-parametric method after imputing missing data using SI and MI was investigated using simulated and real data. Method Using different simulation scenarios derived from a real data set, we compared the performance of cross, trajectory mean, interpolation, copy-mean, and MI methods (27 approaches) to impute missing longitudinal data using parametric and non-parametric longitudinal models and the performance of the methods was assessed in real data. The real data included 3,645 participants older than 18 years within six waves obtained from the longitudinal Tehran cardiometabolic genetic study (TCGS). The data modeling was conducted using systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP/DBP) as the outcome variables and included predictor variables such as age, gender, and BMI. The efficiency of imputation approaches was compared using mean squared error (MSE), root-mean-squared error (RMSE), median absolute deviation (MAD), deviance, and Akaike information criteria (AIC). Results The longitudinal regression tree algorithm outperformed based on the criteria such as MSE, RMSE, and MAD than the linear mixed-effects model (LMM) for analyzing the TCGS and simulated data using the missing at random (MAR) mechanism. Overall, based on fitting the non-parametric model, the performance of the 27 imputation approaches was nearly similar. However, the SI traj-mean method improved performance compared with other imputation approaches. Conclusion Both SI and MI approaches performed better using the longitudinal regression tree algorithm compared with the parametric longitudinal models. Based on the results from both the real and simulated data, we recommend that researchers use the traj-mean method for imputing missing values of longitudinal data. Choosing the imputation method with the best performance is widely dependent on the models of interest and the data structure.

Abstract We sought to investigate the familial aggregation and family-based heritability of dietary intakes among adults in a population-based longitudinal study of the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study (TLSG). Total of 4359 males and 5439 females entered our study. We categorized foods into main groups based on the literature on main food groups and their subgroups among the Iranian dietary habits and food culture as follows: grains, fruits, vegetables, dairy, meats, legume, nuts, beverages, snacks, and fats. The intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) are estimated to verify familial resemblance of dietary habits for all relative pairs and spouses. Family-based heritability is obtained using a mixed effect framework with likelihood-based approach. For almost all food groups, the correlation between parents and offsprings tended to be larger than those of siblings. Family-based heritability of food groups varies from the lowest 6.36% for snacks to the highest 25.67% for fruits, and 25.66% for legume. Our findings indicated weak-to-moderate similarities between parents' and offspring's food intakes; however, the similarity in parent–child food intakes was different, and the correlation in mother-daughter food intakes was stronger than other parent–child correlations, and almost all of dietary components showed strong family-based heritability.

Multidrug-resistant (MDR) Gram-negative bacteria remain a global public health issue due to the barrier imposed by their outer membrane and their propensity to form biofilms. It is becoming imperative to develop new antibacterial strategies. In this context, this study aims to evaluate the antibacterial efficacy of Origanum vulgare essential oil (OEO), alone and in combination with antibiotics, as well as its antibiofilm action against multidrug-resistant Gram-negative strains. OEO components were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and antibacterial activity was assessed using the agar diffusion test and the microdilution method. Interactions between OEO and antibiotics were examined using the checkerboard method, while antibiofilm activity was analyzed using the crystal violet assay. Chemical analysis revealed that carvacrol was the major compound in OEO (61.51%). This essential oil demonstrated activity against all the tested strains, with inhibition zone diameters (IZDs) reaching 32.3 ± 1.5 mm. The combination of OEO with different antibiotics produced synergistic and additive effects, leading to a reduction of up to 98.44% in minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs). In addition, this essential oil demonstrated an ability to inhibit and even eradicate biofilm formation. These results suggest that OEO could be exploited in the development of new molecules, combining its metabolites with antibiotics.

Advance care planning (ACP) can help reduce end-of-life care challenges for persons with Alzheimer's disease and related dementia and their care partners. Building on our previous work, we examined the impact of ACP on outpatient/doctor visits in older adults with dementia/impaired cognition and normal cognition. Using datasets from the 2014 Health and Retirement Study (HRS), we conducted a cross-sectional study of 17,698 participants aged 51 years and older. Our analyses included survey descriptive and logistic regression procedures. Our findings indicated that having at least one ACP measure was significantly associated with a higher mean number of outpatient visits in both cognition groups. Based on our findings, we recommend considering healthcare access and use as an intervening variable in future ACP research.

Abstract Background Traditional observational studies have shown positive associations between c-reactive protein (CRP) and heart failure (HF) risk. However, this association has not been fully elucidated. Therefore, Mendelian randomization was used to examine CRP’s possible etiological roles with HF. Methods We implemented a two-sample Mendelian randomization framework to examine the causality of the association between CRP and HF based on summary statistics by large-scale genome-wide association studies (GWAS) datasets of European ancestry through inverse-variance weighted, weighted median, MREgger regression, and MR-PRESSO methods. The summary statistics dataset on the association of genetic variants with CRP was used from the published GWAS of European descent in UK Biobank participants (N = 427,367) and the CHARGE consortium (N = 575,531). The GWAS dataset used to identify genetic variants underlying HF from the HERMES consortium includes 977,323 participants (47,309 cases and 930,014 controls). Abstract Objective This study evaluated the effect of two natural antioxidants on the compromised bond strength of a resin‐modified glass ionomer (RMGI) to the sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl)‐affected pulp chamber dentin. Methods Forty‐two sound third molars were split into halves. The exposed pulp chamber dentin was ground to provide the flat dentin surfaces and divided into seven groups (n = 12), according to the solutions used for immersion: (1) Control, distilled water; (2) NaOCl, 5.25% NaOCl for 20 min; (3) NaOCl/Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA); 5.25% NaOCl for 20 min + 17% EDTA for 1 min; (4) NaOCl/TA, 5.25% NaOCl + 10% tanic acid (TA) for 5 min; (5) NaOCl/EDTA/TA, 5.25% NaOCl + 17% EDTA + 10% TA for 5 min; (6) NaOCl/PA, 5.25% NaOCl+ 10% proanthocyanidin for 5 min; and (7) NaOCl/EDTA/PA, 5.25% NaOCl+ 17% EDTA + 10% PA for 5 min. The RMGI was bonded on the treated dentin using a Tygon tube. After 24 h of storage, microshear bond strength (µSBS) was tested. Data in MPa were submitted to one‐way analysis of variance and Tamhane test. Results NaOCl significantly decreased the µSBS; NaOCl/EDTA and NaOCl/TA significantly increased the µSBS, higher than the control group (p .05). NaOCl/PA and NaOCl/EDTA/PA and NaOCl groups had comparable µSBS. Conclusion TA could be suggested to provide effective bonding of RMGI and immediate sealing of the pulp chamber dentin after NaOCl irrigation.

Background: Mendelian randomization (MR) is a new generation in the statistical method that uses genetic variants as instrumental variables in data from non-experimental studies to evaluate and estimate the causal effects of risk factors. Methods: The weakness of observational studies to detect causality, the difficulties of conducting clinical trials, the dramatic advancement of Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS) have led to the emergence of a new type of study called MR. It is increasingly being used to determine causality MR is an approach based on meta-analysis methods. The main idea of the MR is based on using the instrument variable (IV) to find the causality between exposure and outcome. This variable does not need to adjust the confounding effects found in observational studies. Results: Data for this study were collected from the beginning of January 2003 to October 2020 in PubMed. Our results showed that MR has an increasing trend. The data used in MR includes summarized statistical data, individual-level data, and meta-analysis. Choosing the suitable IV is essential to successfully conduct an MR. For an unbiased estimate, three main hypotheses should be considered: 1) The IV has a strong relationship with the desired exposure (i.e., potential risk factor), 2) The IV is not related to the confounding variable, and 3) The IV is not directly related to the outcome and should only relate to the outcome through exposure. If these conditions are not met, one solution is to use robust methods. Besides, this research introduced the study designs, estimation methods, limitations, software packages, and some applications of MR in medical research. Conclusion: When we seek to find a causal relationship, but it is not possible to use a clinical trial as a standard method, the MR design can be used in observational studies. Therefore, it is possible to obtain causal relationships between exposure and outcome using the MR.

Abstract Due to the central role in insulin secretion, the potassium inwardly-rectifying channel subfamily J member 11 (KCNJ11) gene is one of the essential genes for type 2 diabetes (T2D) predisposition. However, the relevance of this gene to T2D development is not consistent among diverse populations. In the current study, we aim to capture the possible association of common KCNJ11 variants across Iranian adults, followed by a meta-analysis. We found that the tested variants of KCNJ11 have not contributed to T2D incidence in Iranian adults, consistent with similar insulin secretion levels among individuals with different genotypes. The integration of our results with 72 eligible published case–control studies (41,372 cases and 47,570 controls) as a meta-analysis demonstrated rs5219 and rs5215 are significantly associated with the increased T2D susceptibility under different genetic models. Nevertheless, the stratified analysis according to ethnicity showed rs5219 is involved in the T2D risk among disparate populations, including American, East Asian, European, and Greater Middle Eastern, but not South Asian. Additionally, the meta-regression analysis demonstrated that the sample size of both case and control groups was significantly associated with the magnitude of pooled genetic effect size. The present study can expand our knowledge about the KCNJ11 common variant's contributions to T2D incidence, which is valuable for designing SNP-based panels for potential clinical applications in precision medicine. It also highlights the importance of similar sample sizes for avoiding high heterogeneity and conducting a more precise meta-analysis.

Abstract Objective Given the importance of preserving caries‐affected dentin (CAD) in conservative dentistry, the shear bond strength (SBS) of different resin cements to CAD has been investigated. Here, we aimed to compare the SBS and remineralizing effect of a calcium silicate (TheraCem) and conventional self‐adhesive cement (Panavia SA) on the SBS of CAD. Materials and Methods Forty‐eight extracted third molars (24 sound and 24 CAD) were used. In each group, 12 teeth were prepared for bonding to TheraCem or Panavia SA. After removal of the enamel and caries, resin composite cylinders were luted on the prepared dentin. After 28 days of storage in the artificial saliva, SBS was measured and the failure mode analysis was investigated. The images of fractured sections were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy and energy‐dispersive X‐ray to evaluate the Ca/P weight ratio. Results SBS of CAD and sound dentin was not different when cemented with TheraCem (9.56 ± 4.51 vs. 9.17 ± 2.76, p = .806), but the CAD showed significantly lower SBS to Panavia SA (9.4 ± 2.36 vs. 7.39 ± 2.18, p = .015). The Ca/P ratio in CAD was significantly higher when bonded to both TheraCem and Panavia‐SA than that of the controls (p = .001); however, this ratio was not different for those bonded to TheraCem compared to Panavia SA. Conclusions Based on our results, TheraCem as a calcium silicate cement shows better SBS to attach the restoration to CAD as compared to Panavia SA. Obliteration and mineralization of the dentinal tubules in TheraCem were also higher than in Panavia SA. However, their ability to improve the amount of the Ca/P ratio in CAD was similar.

Background: Apolipoprotein E (APOE) is one of the most polymorphic genes at two single nucleotides (rs429358 and rs7412). The various isoforms of APOE have been associated with a variety of diseases, including neurodegenerative, type 2 diabetes, etc. Hence, predicting the APOE genotyping is critical for disease risk evaluation. The purpose of this study was to optimize the tetra amplification refractory mutation system (Tetra-ARMS) PCR method for the detection of APOE mutations. Material and methods: Here, in our optimized Tetra-ARMS PCR method, different factors like cycle conditions, using HiFidelity enzyme instead of Taq polymerase and setting its best concentration, and the lack of using dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) for amplifying the GC-regions were set up for all primer pairs. The sensitivity and accuracy were tested. For validation of the assay, the results were compared with known genotypes for the APOE gene that were previously obtained by two independent methods, RFLP and Chip-typing. Results: Successful Tetra-ARMS PCR and genotyping are influenced by multiple factors. Our developed method enabled us to amplify the DNA fragment by 25 cycles without adding any hazardous reagent, like DMSO. Our findings showed 100 % accuracy and sensitivity of the optimized Tetra-ARMS PCR while both criteria were 95 % for RFLP and 100 % for the chip-typing method. In addition, our results showed 91 % and 100 % consistency with RFLP and chip typing methods, respectively. Conclusions: Our current method is a simple and accurate approach for detecting APOE polymorphisms within a large sample size in a short time and can be performed even in low-tech laboratories.

Acceptance plans for asphalt mixtures use a certain sample size that is often established based on the purpose of sampling, population size, risk, and allowable error for evaluation. The rate of quality control (QC) sample size is often higher than the quality assurance (QA) sample size. The test results obtained from the QA samples are commonly used to validate the QC test results and to assist the state department of transportation (DOT) with payment decisions. However, if the QA sample size is insufficient to make accurate judgments, the probability of making incorrect decisions regarding acceptance increases. On the other hand, oversampling needlessly consumes both time and cost. To identify the appropriate sample size for QA testing, a balance must be struck between a number of variables. In this case study, two models were developed using the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) data to determine the appropriate QA sample size. The need for this work was realized when a review of ODOT paving projects revealed a large variability in lot size. These ranged from 3000 to more than 100 000 tons with commensurate QA sample size rates. The typical standard deviation (STDEV) values of asphalt content (AC) and in-place density were determined. The developed models show that using the STDEV values that represented more than 90 percent of the projects, ODOT needed to increase QA sample size for both AC and density in lots of less than 22 000 tons. The results also show that sample can be decreased for AC and remain as is for density in projects of more than 22 000 tons of asphalt mixtures. The proposed models can be used to determine the optimum sample size for different lots sizes.

Abstract Background Among candidate genes related to type 2 diabetes (T2DM), one of the strongest genes is Transcription factor 7 like 2 (TCF7L2), regarding the Genome-Wide Association Studies. We aimed to conduct a systematic review of the literature on the modification effect of TCF7L2 on the relation between glycemic parameters and lifestyle factors. Methods A systematic literature search was done for relevant publications using electronic databases, including PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, and Web of Science, from January 1, 2000, to November 2, 2021. Results Thirty-eight studies (16 observational studies, six meal test trials, and 16 randomized controlled trials (RCTs)) were included. Most observational studies had been conducted on participants with non-diabetes showing that TCF7L2 modified the association between diet (fatty acids and fiber) and insulin resistance. In addition, findings from meal test trials showed that, compared to non-risk-allele carriers, consumption of meals with different percentages of total dietary fat in healthy risk-allele carriers increased glucose concentrations and impaired insulin sensitivity. However, ten RCTs, with intervention periods of less than ten weeks and more than one year, showed that TCF7L2 did not modify glycemic parameters in response to a dietary intervention involving different macronutrients. However, two weight loss dietary RCTs with more than 1-year duration showed that serum glucose and insulin levels decreased and insulin resistance improved in non-risk allele subjects with overweight/obesity. Regarding artichoke extract supplementation (ALE), two RCTs observed that ALE supplementation significantly decreased insulin concentration and improved insulin resistance in the TT genotype of the rs7903146 variant of TCF7L2. In addition, four studies suggested that physical activity levels and smoking status modified the association between TCF7L2 and glycemic parameters. However, three studies observed no effect of TCF7L2 on glycemic parameters in participants with different levels of physical activity and smoking status. Conclusion The modification effects of TCF7L2 on the relation between the lifestyle factors (diet, physical activity, and smoking status) and glycemic parameters were contradictory. This study aimed to conduct on the concentration of nitrate/nitrite (mg kg-1) in vegetables and fruits with a special emphasize on the effect of climate condition. The highest concentration (mean and 95%CI) of nitrate/nitrite was determined in Rocket (4825.15; 3044.14–6606.16), Mizuna (3500; 2702.48–4297.52), and Bok choy (3407.40; 2841.39–3973.42) in vegetable group and in wolfberry (2395.83; 1611.89–3179.77), Jack fruit (237.8; 202.88–272.71) and Cantaloupe (220.32; −224.53 to 665.19) in fruits group. Brazil (2816.77), Estonia (2133.76), Republic of China, Taiwan (2118.28) were the nations with the highest average concentration of nitrate/nitrite in all samples taken from these nations across the globe. Furthermore, Chinese fruits contain the highest concentrations of nitrates/nitrites of other countries (500.57; 416.74–584.41). Nitrate is present in greater quantities in fruits (44.02; 42.12–45.93) and vegetables (438.31; 422.51–454.11) than nitrite; however, the quantity of nitrite has a relatively similar content in both. Abstract Backgrounds This randomized controlled trial aimed to investigate the effects of replacing red meat with legumes in the dietary approach to stop hypertension (DASH) diet on inflammatory markers over 16 weeks in overweight and obese individuals with type 2 diabetes. Also, the modulatory effects of TCF7L2 rs7903146 variant on this effect were assessed. Methods In this trial, 300 participants with type 2 diabetes, aged 30–65 years with an identified TCF7L2 rs7903146 genotype, were studied. The participants were randomly assigned to the DASH diet or the legume-based DASH diet over 16 weeks. In the DASH diet group, the participants were instructed to follow the standard DASH diet. The legume-based DASH diet was similar to the standard DASH diet, with the exception that one serving of red meat was replaced with one serving of legumes at least five days a week. At the beginning of the study and 16-week follow-up, venous blood samples were collected from all participants who fasted for 12–14 h overnight. The serum concentration of High-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) was measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit. Also, the serum malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration was assessed based on a colorimetric method using a commercial kit. The primary outcome was the difference in hs-CRP changes between the diets. A secondary outcomes was the difference in IL-6, TNF-α, and MDA between the groups among total population and based on TCF7L2 rs7903146 risk allele (CT + TT) and non-risk allele (CC) separately. Results The hs-CRP level reduced in the legume-based DASH diet group as compared to the DASH diet group in the 16-week follow-up group. The levels of TNF-α, IL-6, and MDA reduced after the legume-based DASH diet relative to the DASH diet. Reduction of inflammatory markers was observed in both carriers of rs7903146 risk allele and non-risk allele. Conclusions Substituting one serving of red meat with one serving of legumes in DASH diet, at least five days a week, could improve the hs-CRP, TNF-α, IL-6, and MDA in participants with type 2 diabetes regardless of having rs7903146 risk or non-risk allele. Abstract Background This study aimed to investigate the effects of legumes in dietary approaches to stop hypertension (DASH) on blood pressure and urinary sodium and potassium in participants with type 2 diabetes. We further investigated whether changes in individual dietary food groups in the DASH diet contribute to blood pressure. Methods Participants were randomized to the traditional DASH diet (n = 150) or the legume-based DASH diet (n = 150). Blood pressure and urinary sodium and potassium were measured at baseline and after 16-week interventions. An intention-to-treat approach with multiple imputations of missing data was applied. The restricted cubic spline (RCS) was applied to assess the linearity and explore the shape of the relationship between the changes in food groups and systolic blood pressure (SBP) in the two intervention groups. Results A reduction in SBP and urinary sodium was observed at week 16 in both dietary interventions, and this reduction was more significant in the legume-based DASH diet, than in the DASH diet. The spread of SARS-CoV-2 can be considered one of the most complicated patterns with a large number of uncertainties and nonlinearities. Therefore, analysis and prediction of the distribution of this virus are one of the most challenging problems, affecting the planning and managing of its impacts. Although different vaccines and drugs have been proved, produced, and distributed one after another, several new fast-spreading SARS-CoV-2 variants have been detected. This is why numerous techniques based on artificial intelligence (AI) have been recently designed or redeveloped to forecast these variants more effectively. The focus of such methods is on deep learning (DL) and machine learning (ML), and they can forecast nonlinear trends in epidemiological issues appropriately. This short review aims to summarize and evaluate the trustworthiness and performance of some important AI-empowered approaches used for the prediction of the spread of COVID-19. Sixty-five preprints, peer-reviewed papers, conference proceedings, and book chapters published in 2020 were reviewed. Our criteria to include or exclude references were the performance of these methods reported in the documents. The results revealed that although methods under discussion in this review have suitable potential to predict the spread of COVID-19, there are still weaknesses and drawbacks that fall in the domain of future research and scientific endeavors.

Abstract Background Obesity is a major public health concern in developed and even developing countries worldwide. Adiponectin is a protein secreted by adipose tissue that modulates many metabolic processes and plays a vital role in obesity. This study aimed to determine the association of four variants of the ADIPOQ gene with serum adiponectin, cortisol levels and obesity status. Methods This case-control study was performed on 164 obese individuals compared by 156 control from the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study (TLGS). Standard procedures obtained anthropometric measures and metabolic parameters. Cortisol and adiponectin levels were measured by ELISA method. rs1501299, rs266729, rs17300539, and rs17366743 on the ADIPOQ gene were genotyped using the PCR-RFLP. Abstract Background Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a prevalent multifactorial disorder that can increase the risk of developing diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer. We aimed to compare different machine learning classification methods in predicting metabolic syndrome status as well as identifying influential genetic or environmental risk factors. Methods This candidate gene study was conducted on 4756 eligible participants from the Tehran Cardio-metabolic Genetic study (TCGS). We compared predictive models using logistic regression (LR), Random Forest (RF), decision tree (DT), support vector machines (SVM), and discriminant analyses. Demographic and clinical features, as well as variables regarding common GCKR gene polymorphisms, were included in the models. Candida spp. is one of the most common opportunistic human fungal pathogens, responsible for 90–100% of mucosal infections. Germ tube formation, hyphal morphogenesis, the production of tissue-damaging extracellular enzymes, and drug-resistant biofilm formation contribute to their pathogenicity, which can lead to systemic infections in the worst scenarios. Thus, there is an urgent need to discover new therapeutic agents to overcome the above virulence factors. Therefore, we aimed to prepare Crinum latifolium leaves-mediated biosynthesis of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) that was characterized by various sophisticated techniques, and further their antifungal, antibiofilm, and anti-virulence activities was investigated. The AuNPs show a zone of inhibition between 19 and 22 mm for test strains of Candida spp. at 1000 µg/ml, whereas the MIC values were ranged from 250 to 500 µg/ml. AuNPs inhibit germ tube formation in C. albicans by 93.3% at 50 µg/ml. Furthermore, exposure to AuNPs significantly reduced the secretions of phospholipase, proteinase, hemolysin, esterase, and lipase. Confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) investigation shows that 25 µg/ml of AuNPs significantly inhibit colonization and biofilm formation. Lastly, the interaction of Candidal cells with AuNPs revealed, ultrastructural changes in the cell wall and cell membranes as visualized by a transmission electron microscope (TEM).

A new structure of microstrip-based low-pass filter with wide stopband and sharp roll-off is introduced, in this paper. In the proposed topology, resonators with T and modified L Shapes have been used. To improve the suppression factor and relative stopband bandwidth, the second resonator has been added to the first resonator. The designed filter has been fabricated on a 20 mm thickness RO4003 substrate, which has a loss tangent of 0.0021 and a relative dielectric constant equal to 3.38. Plant-associated microbes play crucial roles in plant health and promote growth under stress. Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is one of the strategic crops grown throughout Egypt and is a widely grown vegetable worldwide. However, plant disease severely affects tomato production. The post-harvest disease (Fusarium wilt disease) affects food security globally, especially in the tomato fields. Thus, an alternative effective and economical biological treatment to the disease was recently established using Trichoderma asperellum. However, the role of rhizosphere microbiota in the resistance of tomato plants against soil-borne Fusarium wilt disease (FWD) remains unclear. In the current study, a dual culture assay of T. asperellum against various phytopathogens (e.g., Fusarium oxysporum, F. solani, Alternaria alternata, Rhizoctonia solani, and F. graminerarum) was performed in vitro. Interestingly, T. asperellum exhibited the highest mycelial inhibition rate (53.24%) against F. oxysporum. In addition, 30% free cell filtrate of T. asperellum inhibited F. oxysporum by 59.39%. Various underlying mechanisms were studied to explore the antifungal activity against F. oxysporum, such as chitinase activity, analysis of bioactive compounds by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS), and assessment of fungal secondary metabolites against F. oxysporum mycotoxins in tomato fruits. Additionally, the plant growth-promoting traits of T. asperellum were studied (e.g., IAA production, Phosphate solubilization), and the impact on tomato seeds germination. Scanning electron microscopy, plant root sections, and confocal microscopy were used to show the mobility of the fungal endophyte activity to promote tomato root growth compared with untreated tomato root. T. asperellum enhanced the growth of tomato seeds and controlled the wilt disease caused by the phytopathogen F. oxysporum by enhancing the number of leaves as well as shoot and root length (cm) and fresh and dry weights (g). Furthermore, Trichoderma extract protects tomato fruits from post-harvest infection by F. oxysporum. Taking together, T. asperellum represents a safe and effective controlling agent against Fusarium infection of tomato plants.

Diabetes is known to compromise patients' health-related quality of life (HRQoL). It is important to understand the HRQoL of Kuwaiti nationals living with diabetes and identify factors that negatively affect it. This study included 1,182 Kuwaiti nationals with diabetes, aged 18–80 years. Patients' demographic and HRQoL information was collected using the EuroQol EQ-5D-5L instrument. Mean values for each EQ-5D subscale were worst for mobility (1.9) and pain/discomfort (1.8). Most patients reported having no problems in self-care (84.4%). Older adults were most likely to report severe problems with mobility (p < 0.001). Females were more likely to report severe problems with anxiety and depression than males (p < 0.006). The EQ visual analog scale (EQ VAS), which reports perceived overall health on a 0–100 scale, showed a mean of 74.7 (±19.6). Patients with comorbidities and/or complications perceived their health to be worse, with VAS scores significantly lower (p < 0.001). Other factors that negatively affected VAS scores were being female, obesity, insulin usage, and lower levels of education. In conclusion, patients with diabetes who have comorbidities and/or complications perceived their health to be worse. Further research is required to evaluate if current diabetes management interventions help improve patients' HRQoL.

Nuts are an important food group that contributes to maintaining health; however, they can be a source of exposure to aflatoxins. This study was conducted from 2017 to 2021 to assess the incidence of aflatoxins in nuts and nut products imported to the UAE from 57 countries. Associations between container type and processing technique and aflatoxin levels were also analyzed. A total of 5401 samples of pistachios, peanuts, peanut butter, and mixed nuts were examined using HPLC-FLD analysis in conjunction with immunoaffinity cleanup. In nuts, non-conformity was detected in samples imported from 32 different countries. In CESC, ESCA, HNSC, and KIRC patients, ANLN overexpression was correlated with shorter overall survival, relapse-free survival, and metastasis. This suggests that ANLN is significantly involved in the development and progression of these four cancers. Further expression analysis revealed upregulation of ANLN in CESC, ESCA, HNSC, and KIRC patients with different clinical characteristics, regardless of the heterogeneity barrier. Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes enrichment analysis revealed that ANLN-associated genes were coexpressed with ANLN and were included in diverse BP, MF, and KEGG terms. Moreover, some interesting correlations were also documented between ANLN expression and its promoter-methylation level, genetic alterations, other mutant genes, and CD8+ T- and CD4+ T-cell infiltration. Abstract Background During the month of Ramadan, Muslims abstain from daytime consumption of fluids and foods, although some high-risk individuals are exempt. Because fasting's effects on the risk of acute kidney injury (AKI) have not been established, this study assesses the relationship between fasting and risk of AKI and identifies patients at high risk. Methods A single-center, retrospective, propensity-score matched, cohort study was conducted with data collected from adult patients admitted to the emergency room during Ramadan and the following month over two consecutive years (2016 and 2017). AKI was diagnosed based on the 2012 definition from the Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes clinical practice guideline. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to examine the correlation and measure the effect of fasting on the incidence of AKI, and assess the effect of different variables on the incidence of AKI between the matching cohorts. Results A total of 1199 patients were included; after matching, each cohort had 499 patients. In the fasting cohort, the incidence of AKI and the risk of developing AKI were significantly lower (adjusted odds ratio (AOR) 0.65;95% confidence interval (CI) 0.44–0.98). The most indicative risk factors for AKI were hypertension (AOR 2.17; 95% CI 1.48–3.18), history of AKI (AOR 5.05; 95% CI 3.46–7.39), and liver cirrhosis (AOR 3.01; 95% CI 1.04–8.70). Patients with these factors or most other comorbidities in the fasting cohort had a lower risk of AKI as compared with their nonfasting counterparts. Conclusion The data show a strong reduction in the risk of developing AKI as a benefit of fasting, particularly in patients with comorbid conditions. Therefore, most patients with comorbid conditions are not harmed from fasting during Ramadan. However, larger prospective studies are needed to investigate the benefit of fasting in reducing the risk of developing AKI.

BackgroundThe rs2282679 polymorphism in the vitamin D binding protein (DBP) gene may influence the response to vitamin D supplementation. Therefore, we examine the effect of 1-year vitamin D supplementation on vitamin D deficiency (VDD) with the interaction of rs2282679 polymorphism in overweight and obese children and adolescents.Materials and methodsThe participants (n = 300) were part of a randomized controlled trial who received a daily supplement of either 1,000 or 2,000 IU or four supplements of 1,000 IU weekly (equal to 600 IU daily) of vitamin D3 for 12 months. Genotyping was performed using amplification refractory mutation system polymerase chain reaction (ARMS-PCR).ResultsThe mean of 25(OH)D values at baseline for participants with the TT, TG, and GG genotypes were 15.4, 14.4, and 10.8 ng/mL, respectively, and were not different between the three genotype groups (P = 0.062). A significant reduction in VDD was observed after vitamin D supplementation with dosages of 1,000 or 2,000 IU compared to 600 IU. No significant association of genotypes with risk of VDD was observed in each intervention group after vitamin D supplementation, except, that individuals with TG genotype showed a higher risk of VDD compared to those with TT genotype in the 2,000 IU group after 6 months of supplementation [odds ratio (95% CI): 6.94; 1.30–37.02]. We observed no interaction between time duration, three genotypes, and dosages with serum 25(OH)D, calcium, phosphorus, alkaline phosphatase, and parathyroid hormone levels.ConclusionResponse to vitamin D supplementation by three doses of 600, 1,000, and 2,000 IU could not be affected by rs2282679 polymorphism during 12 months in overweight and obese children and adolescents.

Pesticides are a major public health issue connected with excessive use because they negatively impact health and the environment. Pesticide toxicity has been connected to various human illnesses by means of pesticide exposure in direct or indirect ways. A total of 4513 samples of imported fresh fruits were collected from Dubai ports between 2018 to 2020. Their contamination by pesticides was evaluated using gas chromatography combined with mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The display of monitoring results was based on the Maximum Residue Limit (MRL) standard as per the procedures of the European Union. Eighty-one different pesticide residues were detected in the tested fruit samples. In 73.2% of the samples, the pesticide levels were ≥ MRL, while 26.8% were > MRL standards. Chlorpyrifos, carbendazim, cypermethrin, and azoxystrobin were the most frequently detected pesticides in more than 150 samples. Longan (81.4%) and rambutan (66.7%) showed the highest number of imported samples with multiple pesticide residues > MRL. These results highlight the need to continuously monitor pesticide residues in fruits, particularly samples imported into the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Fruit samples with residues > MRL are considered unfit for consumption and prevented from entering commerce in the UAE.
