Abstract

Modern measurement technologies such as Terrestrial Laser Scanning or combined Structure-from-Motion with Multi-View Stereo are commonly utilised to monitor, preserve and document cultural heritage objects and sites. For this reason, it is essential to know the capabilities and limitations of the sensor used, the data processing methods, and in particular, the orientation of the images. However, these algorithms tackle different errors and have different effects on the final accuracy of images orientation. For this reason, it is essential to know how the algorithms implemented in the Structure-from-Motion approach work. Due to the impossibility of obtaining this information for commercial solutions, it is necessary to use synthetic data to assess the quality of the SfM process. Therefore, this article aims to present the method of evaluation of SfM approach implemented in commercial Agisoft Metashape and COLLMAP open-source software based on the synthetic data generated from TLS point clouds of three different Cultural Heritage sites. In addition, obtained results were compared with the author's SfM approach based on BRISK, FAST, CenSurE, SIFT and SURF (and its Affine detectors equivalents) detector implemented (Fig. 1) and Learned-based -feature extraction approach SuperGlue and LoFTR. The second aim of this research is to propose an application to automatically generate scalable benchmark based on point clouds or 3D models of cultural heritage objects.

10. THE INTEGRATION OF THE MULTI-TEMPORAL CONSERVATION WORKS AND NON-INVASIVE MEASUREMENTS

Abstract

Heritage sites are affected by many factors that cause degradation and decay over time, such as soil deformation, changes in weather conditions, or excess moisture, which can cause damages to historical sites. For this reason, restoration works are planned and carried out to preserve the object's existing condition, renovate and repair the damaged parts, or restore the original condition of the object. The Rescue Project was undertaken in the Blessed Ladislas’ chapel in St. Anna's Church in Warsaw, Poland. The main goal of the planned work was to restore the original rococo character of the dome paintings. The aim of this article was to present the integration of the multi-temporal conservation work and non-invasive measurements for changes analysis during conservation works. For this purpose, point clouds acquired with a Z+F 5006h ground-based scanner and images captured via Structure-from-Motion and MultiView Stereo method implemented in Agisoft Metashape software were used. The proposed conservation analysis method was a multi-stage process that involved: (1) automatic data integration using a feature-based approach based on 2D detectors and point clouds converted to spherical images, (2) generalisation and harmonisation of source data, and (3) analysis of deviations between point clouds. Having registered point clouds with each other, it was possible to analyse changes that occurred during conservation work. Calculated distances between both point clouds show the localisation of cracks and damages and enable measure of the size and depth of crevices on the dome wall.

Abstract

The concept of Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) emerged in recent years as a method to create novel synthetic 3D viewpoints from a set of trained images. While it has several overlaps with conventional photogrammetry and especially multi-view stereo (MVS), its main point of interest is the capability to rapidly recreate objects in 3D. In this paper, we investigate the quality of point clouds generated by state-of-the-art NeRF in the context of interior spaces and compare them to four conventional MVS algorithms, of which two are commercial (Agisoft Metashape and Pix4D) and the other two open source (Patch-Match and Semi-Global Matching). Three synthetic datasets of interior scenes were created from laser scanning data with different characteristics and architectural elements. Results show that NeRF point clouds could achieve satisfactory results geometrically speaking, with an average standard deviation of 1.7 cm in interior cases where the scene dimension is roughly 25–50 m3 in volume. However, the level of noise on the point cloud, which was considered as out of tolerance, ranges between 17–42%, meaning that the level of detail and finesse is most likely insufficient for sophisticated heritage documentation purposes, even though from a visualisation point of view the results were better. Abstract

Kramers-Kronig analysis provides the means to study photoreflectance spectra of heavily doped GaAs/Si-GaAs structures. Using Kramers-Kronig analysis, a complex photoreflectance function is created. The function's modulus provides the critical point energy. The phase of the function is suitable for a topographical study of the homogenity of the structure'sinternal electric field.

Abstract

An orthoimage is one of the basic photogrammetric products used for architectural documentation of historical objects; recently, it has become a standard in such work. Considering the increasing popularity of photogrammetric techniques applied in the cultural heritage domain, this research examines the two most popular measuring technologies: terrestrial laser scanning, and automatic processing of digital photographs. The basic objective of the performed works presented in this paper was to optimize the quality of generated high-resolution orthoimages using integration of data acquired by a Z+F 5006 terrestrial laser scanner and a Canon EOS 5D Mark II digital camera. The subject was one of the walls of the "Blue Chamber" of the Museum of King Jan III's Palace at Wilanów (Warsaw, Poland). The high-resolution images resulting from integration of the point clouds acquired by the different methods were analysed in detail with respect to geometric and radiometric correctness.
