1. Field Test of the MiniRadMeter Gamma and Neutron Detector for the EU Project CLEANDEM

Abstract: In the framework of the H2020 CLEANDEM project, a small robotic vehicle was equipped with a series of different sensors that were developed for the preliminary inspection of areas possibly contaminated by radiation. Such unmanned inspection allows to identify dangerous locations prior to the possible start of human operations. One of the developed devices, named the MiniRadMeter, is a compact low-cost sensor that performs gamma and neutron radiation field mapping in the environment. The MiniRadMeter was successfully tested in a simulated field mission with four “hidden” radioactive sources and a neutron generator. In this work, we describe the test procedure and the results, which were supported by the outcome of dedicated Monte Carlo simulations.

2. RFP-MSR Hybrid Reactor Model for Tritium Breeding and Actinides Transmutation †

Abstract: The studies on the development of fusion–fission hybrid reactors (FFHR) have gained consensus in recent years as an intermediate step before fusion energy. This work proposes a possible approach to FFHRs based on the coupling of a Reversed Field Pinch fusion machine and a Molten Salt Subcritical fission test bed. The proposed test bed is characterized by the coexistence of a fast-neutron fission core and a dedicated thermal-neutron zone, allowing the performing of tritium breeding and actinides transmutation studies. The neutronic design solutions and the results obtained by the irradiation of FLiBe salt (inside the thermal-neutron zone) and of an actinide target (inside the core) are shown. The outcomes of the analysis reveal the potential of FFHR systems as breeding/burner systems. In particular, the results regarding tritium breeding are very encouraging as the system is demonstrated to be able to reach a very high Tritium Breeding Ratio.

Abstract: The decommissioning of nuclear installations, as well as the possible necessary accident remediations, requires the physical presence of human operators in potentially radiologically hostile environments. The number of active nuclear reactors worldwide is greater than 400, and most of them are 40 to 50 years old, thus implying that soon they will have to be dismantled. In the framework of the H2020 CLEANDEM project, a small robotic vehicle is being developed that is equipped with a series of different sensors for areas that are significantly contaminated by radiation. In this work, we describe the MiniRadMeter system, a compact low-cost sensor capable of being used to perform quick gamma and neutron radiation field mapping of environments prior to the possible start of human operations. The miniature gamma sensor is a 1 cm3 scintillator counter with moderate spectroscopic features read out by means of a 6 × 6 mm2 SiPM, whereas neutrons are detected by means of a silicon diode coupled to a layer of 6LiF and placed inside a 6 × 6 × 6 cm3 polyethylene box. The front-end and data acquisition electronics were developed based on a Raspberry Pi4 microcomputer. In this paper, the system performance and the preliminary test results are described.

Abstract: Precise knowledge of the energy and lifetime of 229mTh isomeric state has notable importance as a basis for a nuclear clock. Such a clock would be capable to extend precision on the oscillator frequency by up to four orders of magnitude compared to the presently best atomic clocks. However, the technique proposed for the clock requires that the isomeric state energy is accessible with existing laser systems. Previous measurement placed this state at ∼8 eV (150 nm), in the Vacuum Ultra Violet (VUV) range of the electromagnetic spectrum. A precise direct measurement of the energy of this state is necessary to determine whether the nuclear clock can be made using existing laser technology. We are developing a cryogenic microcalorimeter to measure the energy and lifetime of the 229mTh isomeric state directly. The experiment will use a 233U source whose alpha-decay will populate the 229mTh isomeric state with 2% probability. The subsequent decay of 229mTh will be measured by a Transition Edge Sensor (TES) with 5 microseconds. The single-photon TES has sufficient resolving power combined with high efficiency in the whole energy band for this experiment. Here we present a prototype of TES based on a 200 nm thick iridium-gold (Ir/Au) film which was tested with a pulsed laser source and demonstrated ∼0.8 eV energy resolution and 5.8 ± 2.1 μs signal recovery time.

Abstract: The global need for energy in the world is constantly increasing. Critical fission reactors have proved great efficiency in the energy production, but the fear of nuclear wastes and accidents due to an uncontrolled chain reaction makes these unpleasant to public. More safe fusion reactors, on the opposite, have low efficiency. Hybrid reactors capable of using the advantages of both are studied, but not yet developed. In this paper, a simple fusion–fission pilot experiment model has been developed. A Tokamak with the same characteristics of DTT (Divertor Tokamak Test facility) has been considered as a reference machine for the fusion component. The fusion system has been coupled with a relatively simple low-power fission blanket configured into three different modes by using different fuels and materials. This model could be useful in order to investigate the properties of the fusion–fission hybrid coupling from a neutronic point of view.

Abstract: We studied a flexible ADS-based irradiation facility with fast neutrons inside the core and slow neutrons in the composite reflector containing light materials. The fast reactor core has been designed using MCNP-6 code with a mixed reflector formed by three concentric cylindrical layers (lead+graphite+lead) in order to have different neutrons spectra to perform various types of measurements without perturbing the ADS core fast characteristics. We also included in the ADS design three irradiation points external to the core, in positions such to have different neutron spectra, for measurements to be performed out of the ADS system. Moreover, we performed a thermal-hydraulic assessment of the behavior of target and core cooling systems. In order to investigate the capabilities of the system, we studied different kinds of possible measurements that could be performed in various positions, both inside and outside the ADS.

Abstract: The Reversed Field Pinch (RFP) configuration looks to be an attractive option for fusion-fission hybrid reactors: the toroidal magnetic systems would be made of copper coils instead of more expensive superconductive magnets; fusion conditions could be reached by ohmic heating only, therefore additional heating systems would not be required; the fission blanket could be located in the most external part of the torus thus facilitating maintenance operations. The paper aims at assessing the potentialities, such as fuel fertilization and/or nuclear waste transmutation and electricity production of a hybrid reactor with a RFP fusion core (R = 6 m, a = 1) whose conceptual design and plasma performances are based on RFX-mod, the largest RFP experiment currently in operation. Fusion conditions can be reached by heating a D-T plasma up to 9.6 keV by ohmic heating, generated by a 20 MA plasma current induced and sustained by flux swing only. The neutron flux (2.1 × 1013 fast neutron/cm2/s) is used to breed tritium in both the inner and outer blanket sections and induce fission reactions in dedicated areas in the external blanket section where Pu + MA (60%)-Zr (40%) rods are located. Both neutronic and safety analyses corroborate the viability of a FFH reactor with a RFP core.

9. An alternative observable to estimate keff in fast ADS

Abstract: In this paper we examine an alternative method for determining the neutron multiplication factor k eff in fast subcritical reactors, based on the observable obtained by calculating the ratio between the “fast” component of the neutron flux (in this case by fast we mean neutrons with kinetic energy above 0.5 MeV) and the whole flux at all energies. The assumption behind the present study was that the above mentioned observable would be only sensitive to k eff , provided a peripheral fuel rod is considered (i.e. far from the neutron source in subcritical systems) and k eff is sufficiently high. Indeed, our results show that, for k eff > 0.7 , the ratio calculated for LFR or GFR models turns out to show a quite similar trend well approximated by a straight line, while a different slope is observed for a sodium reactor. In our opinion, the results obtained show that such observable, after appropriate calibrations on the real systems under consideration, may be used for determining k eff in all operational conditions, in particular for subcritical systems with different types of neutron source and different values of the beam current.

Abstract: The tensor analyzing power Γ20 in elastic electron-deuteron scattering has been measured in the four momentum transfer region between 1.4 and 3.2 fm~l using the Internal Target Facility at NIKHEF. Tensor-polarized deuterium is produced in an Atomic Beam Source and injected into a storage cell. Scattered electrons and recoil deuterons were detected in coincidence with two large acceptance nonmagnetic detectors.

Abstract: Aim of this work is the preliminary thermal-fluid-dynamic assessment of a subcritical system to perform integral measurements on transmutation processes, designed in the frame of EU CHANDA project: in particular, a low power Accelerator Driven System (ADS) may represent an attractive intermediate step to fill the gap between existing and future facilities like MYRRHA (or possibly EFIT). The activity finds its place within the roadmap for the evaluation of transmutation processes in ADSs, where currently measurements are performed on the zero-power ADS Guinevere at SCK·CEN (Mol, Belgium), while in the future it is expected that MYRRHA will be the major high-power facility for performing this kind of studies and assessing the performance of a fast ADS. The neutronic characterization and burn-up simulations based on MCNP6 code of the reactor core allowed the definition of the geometry and the composition of the fuel assembly and, therefore, the thermal power to be removed. On this basis a thermo-fluid-dynamic assessment, through simple analytical accounts and detailed 3D CFD calculations by OpenFOAM-v1612+ and ANSYS FLUENT v17.0 was made. The present paper is an extended version including the main conclusions and observations emerged in the 2nd AIGE-IIETA International Conference in Genoa.

Abstract: We present the results of our final analysis of the full data set of g1p(Q2), the spin structure function of the proton, collected using CLAS at Jefferson Laboratory in 2000–2001. Polarized electrons with energies of 1.6, 2.5, 4.2, and 5.7 GeV were scattered from proton targets (NH315 dynamically polarized along the beam direction) and detected with CLAS. From the measured double spin asymmetries, we extracted virtual photon asymmetries A1p and A2p and spin structure functions g1p and g2p over a wide kinematic range (0.05 GeV2

Abstract: We report the first beam-target double-polarization asymmetries in the γ þ nðpÞ → π− þ pðpÞ reaction spanning the nucleon resonance region from invariant mass W ¼ 1500 to 2300 MeV. Circularly polarized photons and longitudinally polarized deuterons in solid hydrogen deuteride (HD) have been used with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) at Jefferson Lab. The exclusive final state has been extracted using three very different analyses that show excellent agreement, and these have been used to deduce the E polarization observable for an effective neutron target. These results have been incorporated into new partial wave analyses and have led to significant revisions for several γnN* resonance photocouplings.

14. Preliminary thermal-fluid-dynamic assessment of an ADS irradiation facility for fast and slow neutrons

Abstract: In this work we report initial studies on a low power Accelerator-Driven System as a possible experimental facility for the measurement of relevant integral nuclear quantities. In particular, we performed Monte Carlo simulations of minor actinides and fission products irradiation and estimated the fission rate within fission chambers in the reactor core and the reflector, in order to evaluate the transmutation rates and the measurement sensitivity. We also performed a photo-peak analysis of available experimental data from a research reactor, in order to estimate the expected sensitivity of this analysis method on the irradiation of samples in the ADS considered.

Abstract: The neutron multiplication factor keff is a key quantity to characterize subcritical neutron multiplying devices and for understanting their physical behaviour, being related to the fundamental eigenvalue of Boltzmann transport equation. Both the maximum available power - and all quantities related to it, like, e.g. the effectiveness in burning nuclear wastes - as well as reactor kinetics and dynamics depend on keff . Nevertheless, keff is not directly measurable and its determination results from the solution of an inverse problem: minimizing model dependence of the solution for keff then becomes a critical issue, relevant both for practical and theoretical reasons.

The text is divided into two parts; the first covers the basics of nuclear forces and properties of nuclei, nuclear collisions, nuclear stability, radioactivity, and provides a detailed discussion of nuclear fission and relevant topics in its application to energy production. The second part covers the basic technical aspects of nuclear fission reactors, nuclear fuel cycle and resources, safety, safeguards, and radioactive waste management. The book also contains a discussion of the biological effects of nuclear radiation and of radiation protection, and a summary of the ten most relevant nuclear accidents. The book is suitable for undergraduates in physics, nuclear engineering and other science subjects. However, the mathematics is kept at a level that can be easily followed by wider circles of readers. The addition of solved problems, strategically placed throughout the text, and the collections of problems at the end of the chapters allow readers to appreciate the quantitative aspects of various phenomena and processes. Many illustrations and graphs effectively supplement the text and help visualising specific points.

Abstract: The first two sections of the chapter present a survey of various types of nuclear collisions and illustrate the cross section concept, which is largely used to describe nuclear reactions. The remaining part of the chapter deals with nuclear fission, the process that is of fundamental importance for the production of nuclear power. Sections 3.3–3.7 examine in detail the distribution of fission fragments, the energy released in the fission reaction, the fission induced by neutron capture, the general conditions for setting up a fission chain reaction, and the way used for slowing down neutrons in thermal neutron reactors. Abstract: In this paper we simulated the behavior of a simple ADS model, based on MOX fuel embedded in solid lead, in terms of multiplication coefficient keff, thermal power and absolute neutron spectra. In the first part of the paper, we report on the results obtained when modifying the reflector surrounding the fission core, by replacing pure lead with a layered graphite/lead structure. We found that, by appropriately choosing position and thickness of the graphite and lead layers, it is possible to obtain a hybrid system where the neutron spectrum in the core still exhibits a fast character, while the spectrum in the graphite layer is considerably softer, becoming thermal in the most peripheral positions. In order to obtain such a modulation of the neutron spectra from the center of the system to the periphery, a careful choice of the materials has to be made in order to avoid large variations of the local power at the core boundary. However, the smoothness of the power distribution is obtained at the expense of lower values of keff and the total power of the system. In the second part of the paper, we explored the option of adopting light water as coolant, instead of the helium gas assumed in the initial design. We found that this produces an increase in keff and thermal power, without significantly perturbing the fast character of the system and without introducing spatial power excursions in any place within the core. The characteristics obtained may allow to design a system where fast, mixed and thermal spectra can be used to expand the use of the ADS as an irradiation facility., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures

Abstract: Electricity production from nuclear power does not emit greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide into the air. However, it generates radioactive wastes in solid, liquid, and gaseous forms that can contaminate the environment and create a hazard for people’s health if not properly controlled and managed. Therefore, radioactive wastes must be handled in a safe way to protect people and the environment. Various types of radioactive waste exist and proper disposal depends on the properties of the waste. This chapter focuses on nuclear waste generation, handling, storage and disposal. It first gives the classification of nuclear wastes according to their radioactive content and half-life, making comparisons with other hazardous waste and waste from other sources of electricity generation. Then, it illustrates the typical composition of nuclear spent fuel, the time evolution of its radioactivity, and the safe methods for its final disposal. Finally, it describes the studies in progress for significantly reducing the volume and radiotoxicity of nuclear wastes and for shortening the very long time for which they must be stored safely.

Abstract: In this contribution, we present the expected performance of a new detector to measure the absolute energy-integrated flux and the energy spectrum of anti-neutrinos emitted by a nuclear power plant. The number of detected anti-neutrino is a direct measure of the power while from the energy spectrum is possible to infer the evolution in time of the core isotopic composition. The proposed method should be sensitive to a sudden change in the core burn-up as caused, for instance, by a fraudulent subtraction of plutonium. The detector, a 130 × 100 × 100 cm 3 cube with 1 m 3 active volume, made by plastic scintillator wrapped in thin Gd foils, is segmented in 50 independent optical channels read, side by side, by a pair of 3 in. photomultipliers. Anti-neutrino interacts with hydrogen contained in the plastic scintillator via the neutron inverse β - decay ( ν ¯ p → e + n ). The high segmentation of the detector allows to reduce the background from other reactions by detecting independent hits for the positron, the two photons emitted in the e + e - annihilation and the neutron.

Abstract: We report on the first measurement of the differential cross section of ϕ-meson photoproduction for the d ( γ , p K + K − ) n exclusive reaction channel. The experiment was performed using a tagged-photon beam and the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) at Jefferson Lab. A combined analysis using data from the d ( γ , p K + K − ) n channel and those from a previous publication on coherent ϕ production on the deuteron has been carried out to extract the ϕ − N total cross section, σ ϕ N . The extracted ϕ − N total cross section favors a value above 20 mb. This value is larger than the value extracted using vector-meson dominance models for ϕ photoproduction on the proton.

Abstract: A prototype of neutron spectrometer based on diamond detectors has been developed. This prototype consists of a $^6$Li neutron converter sandwiched between two CVD diamond crystals. The radiation hardness of the diamond crystals makes it suitable for applications in low power research reactors, while a low sensitivity to gamma rays and low leakage current of the detector permit to reach good energy resolution. A fast coincidence between two crystals is used to reject background. The detector was read out using two different electronic chains connected to it by a few meters of cable. The first chain was based on conventional charge-sensitive amplifiers, the other used a custom fast charge amplifier developed for this purpose. The prototype has been tested at various neutron sources and showed its practicability. In particular, the detector was calibrated in a TRIGA thermal reactor (LENA laboratory, University of Pavia) with neutron fluxes of $10^8$ n/cm$^2$s and at the 3 MeV D-D monochromatic neutron source named FNG (ENEA, Rome) with neutron fluxes of $10^6$ n/cm$^2$s. The neutron spectrum measurement was performed at the TAPIRO fast research reactor (ENEA, Casaccia) with fluxes of 10$^9$ n/cm$^2$s. Abstract: The study of the baryon spectrum is a fundamental part of the scientific program in Hall B at Jefferson Laboratory. The so called N* program indeed concerns the measurement of the electromagnetic production of exclusive baryon excited states. CLAS, the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer, is explicitly designed for conducting a broad experimental program in hadronic physics, using the continuous electron beam provided by the laboratory. Some selected issues in the N* CLAS experimental program will be outlined, then the beam and detector performance will be discussed and finally some relevant new experimental results will be reported.

Abstract: The study of the response of the two modules of the large-angle electromagnetic shower calorimeter (LAC) of the CLAS detector to charged and neutral particles is reported. The results agree very well with the Monte Carlo simulation. The procedures adopted for the energy and timing calibration are also discussed, proving that the module geometry allows for simple self-calibrating energy and timing algorithms.

Abstract: This paper describes the scientific aims and potentials as well as the preliminary technical design of RUDE, an innovative tool for multi-disciplinary investigations in a wide field of scientific, technological and industrial applications. IRIDE will be a high intensity "particles factory", based on a combination of high duty cycle radio-frequency superconducting electron linacs and of high energy lasers. Conceived to provide unique research possibilities for particle physics, for condensed matter physics, chemistry and material science, for structural biology and industrial applications, IRIDE will open completely new research possibilities and advance our knowledge in many branches of science and technology. Abstract: Within European Partitioning & Transmutation research programs, infrastructures specifically dedicated to the study of fundamental reactor physics and engineering parameters of future fast-neutron-based reactors are very important, being some of these features not available in present zero-power prototypes. This presentation will illustrate the conceptual design of an Accelerator-Driven System with high safety standards, but ample flexibility for measurements. The design assumes as base option a 70 MeV, 0.75 mA proton cyclotron, as the one which will be installed at the INFN National Laboratory in Legnaro, Italy and a Beryllium target, with Helium gas as core coolant. Safety is guaranteed by limiting the thermal power to 200 kW, with a neutron multiplication coefficient around 0.94, loading the core with fuel containing Uranium enriched at 20% inserted in a solid-lead diffuser. The small decay heat can be passively removed by thermal radiation from the vessel. Such a system could be used to study, among others, some specific aspects of neutron diffusion in lead, beam-core coupling, target cooling and could serve as a training facility.

Abstract: In the framework of the AIACE[1]-CLAS[2] collaboration, the reaction eN → e ′ Nππ will be used in the mass region between threshold and 2.2 GeV both to investigate poorly known baryon resonances and to search for “missing” resonances predicted by quark models but not yet found experimentally. Using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer CLAS, the hadronic products will be detected in coincidence with the scattered electron. Differential cross sections and perhaps partial wave amplitudes for quasi-two-body iso-bar production could be extracted. Other quantities of physical interest like meson form factors are then briefly discussed.

Abstract: A low-power prototype of neutron amplifier, based on a 70 MeV, high current proton cyclotron being installed at LNL for the SPES RIB facility, was recently proposed within INFN-E project. This prototype uses a thick Beryllium converter to produce a fast neutron spectrum feeding a sub-critical reactor core. To complete the design of such facility the new measurement of neutron yield from a thick Beryllium target was performed at LNS. This measurement used liquid scintillator detectors to identify produced neutrons by Pulse Shape Discrimination and Time of Flight technique to measure neutron energy in the range 0.5-62 MeV. To extend the covered neutron energy range He3 detector was used to measure neutrons below 0.5 MeV. The obtained yields were normalized to the charge deposited by the proton beam on the metallic Beryllium target. These techniques allowed to achieve a wide angular coverage from 0 to 150 degrees and to explore almost complete neutron energy interval., To appear in proceedings of ANIMMA International Conference, June 23-27, Marseille, France

Abstract: The light response of pions, protons and deuterons with respect to electrons of the same energy is measured in a BGO calorimeter using the inclusive 16 O(e, e′), 16 O(e, π), 16 O(e, p) and 16 O(e, d) reactions. An average 5% quenching is found in the 100–500 MeV energy range of this experiment.

Abstract: We have analyzed data taken by the CLAS collaboration in double charged pion electroproduction off the proton. We have used an isobar model specifically developed for the analysis of the Nππ channel. This approach relates baryon resonance parameters to the experimental cross section, allowing the extraction of electromagnetic and some strong couplings from the fit to the data. A remarkable feature of the CLAS data is a resonance structure around 1.7 GeV which has not been seen in double pion photoproduction. The structure appears at all Q 2 values from 0.5 to 1.5 GeV 2 and it can not be reproduced with conventional N ∗ parameters.

Abstract: We describe an event generator that reproduces the photon-nucleon interaction from the pion threshold up to 4 GeV accounting to a large extent for the total photoabsorption cross section. Many reaction channels on the nucleon have been considered: namely single pion production, eta production, multipion production and some hyperon production channels. Compatibility with the GEANT and PAW software packages has been assured throughout. The extension to reactions on two and three nucleon systems is discussed.

Abstract: We present the results of an absolute measurement of the total nuclear photoabsorption cross section for carbon in the higher nucleon resonance region. In the Δ region our results agree with existing data, while at higher energies they show a damping in the excitation of the higher nucleon resonances, clearly seen in the photon absorption on proton and deutron.

Abstract: We present the results of the photofission cross section for 238 U measured between 200 and 1200 MeV. In the ‡ region our results agree with existing data on the total photoabsorption cross section, while at higher energy they show no evidence of the higher nucleon resonances, clearly seen in the photon absorption on the photon, and a damping of the absolute value.

Abstract: In this paper I will illustrate examples of progress in the five main avenues of nucleon structure research in Hall B at JLab: elastic and resonance transition form factors, polarized inelastic scattering, semi‐inclusive meson electroproduction, hard exclusive reactions and non‐strange baryon spectroscopy. The 12 GeV machine and detector upgrade will offer an unprecedented opportunity to study all these topics in a broader kinematic domain.

47. A large surface neutron and photon detector for civil security applications

Abstract: The security of ports and transportation is of utmost importance for the development of economy and the security of a nation. Among the necessary actions to ensure the security of ports and borders, the inspection of containers is one of the most time consuming and expensive procedures. Potential threats are the illegal traffic of radioactive materials that could be employed for the construction of weapons, as uranium and plutonium. New techniques for the inspections of containers should be fast, allow the detection and identification of dangerous materials, and be non-invasive, to reduce costs and delays. We propose to build a large surface photon and neutron detector based on plastic scintillator to identify the presence of fissile or fertile material inside a container. The detector consists of scintillator bars, wrapped in thin foils of reflecting material containing gadolinium for neutron capture and arranged in planes separated by few-millimeter-thick lead sheets. The total instrumented surface is a few squared meters. Neutrons emitted by fissile materials are identified by gadolinium capture, which results in a high multiplicity gamma flash with total energy of 8 MeV. Photons emitted by the same source are detected via their Compton interaction in the scintillating material. The discrimination between photons and neutrons is achieved by measuring the number of bars of the detector that measured a signal above threshold. The resulting multiplicity is a clear signature of the particle type. First simulations of the detector response with GEANT4 have shown that a detection efficiency of 20–30% for neutrons emitted by fissile materials and a photon/neutron rejection ratio of more than two orders of magnitude can be achieved. Based on these simulations, the sensitivity of the detector to known amounts of plutonium and uranium was estimated. In this contribution, the conceptual design of the detector will be reviewed, the results of the simulations will be presented and the plan of measurements to be performed on a prototype will be discussed.

Abstract: An event-based partial wave analysis (PWA) of the reaction {gamma}p{yields}p{omega} has been performed on a high-statistics dataset obtained using the CLAS at Jefferson Lab for center-of-mass energies from threshold up to 2.4 GeV. This analysis benefits from access to the world's first high-precision spin-density matrix element measurements, available to the event-based PWA through the decay distribution of {omega}{yields}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}{pi}{sup 0}. The data confirm the dominance of the t-channel {pi}{sup 0} exchange amplitude in the forward direction. The dominant resonance contributions are consistent with the previously identified states F{sub 15}(1680) and D{sub 13}(1700) near threshold, as well as the G{sub 17}(2190) at higher energies. Suggestive evidence for the presence of a J{sup P}=5/2{sup +} state around 2 GeV, a ''missing'' state, has also been found. Evidence for other states is inconclusive.

Abstract: The two-body photodisintegration of {sup 4}He into a proton and a triton has been studied using the CEBAF Large-Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. Real photons produced with the Hall-B bremsstrahlung-tagging system in the energy range from 0.35 to 1.55 GeV were incident on a liquid {sup 4}He target. This is the first measurement of the photodisintegration of {sup 4}He above 0.4 GeV. The differential cross sections for the {gamma}{sup 4}He{yields}pt reaction were measured as a function of photon-beam energy and proton-scattering angle and are compared with the latest model calculations by J.-M. Laget. At 0.6-1.2 GeV, our data are in good agreement only with the calculations that include three-body mechanisms, thus confirming their importance. These results reinforce the conclusion of our previous study of the three-body breakup of {sup 3}He that demonstrated the great importance of three-body mechanisms in the energy region 0.5-0.8 GeV.

Abstract: The helicity amplitudes of the electroexcitation of the Roper resonance are extracted for $1.7l{Q}^{2}l4.5\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}{\mathrm{GeV}}^{2}$ from recent high precision JLab-CLAS cross section and longitudinally polarized beam asymmetry data for ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}$ electroproduction on protons at $W=1.15\ensuremath{-}1.69$ GeV. The analysis is made using two approaches, dispersion relations and a unitary isobar model, which give consistent ${Q}^{2}$ behavior of the helicity amplitudes for the ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}^{*}p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}$N(1440)P${}_{11}$ transition. It is found that the transverse helicity amplitude ${A}_{1/2}$, which is large and negative at ${Q}^{2}=0$, becomes large and positive at ${Q}^{2}\ensuremath{\simeq}2\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}{\mathrm{GeV}}^{2}$, and then drops slowly with ${Q}^{2}$. The longitudinal helicity amplitude ${S}_{1/2}$, which was previously found from CLAS $\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{e}p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\mathit{ep}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0},\mathit{en}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}$ data to be large and positive at ${Q}^{2}=0.4,0.65\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}{\mathrm{GeV}}^{2}$, drops with ${Q}^{2}$. Available model predictions for ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}^{*}p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}$N(1440)P${}_{11}$ allow us to conclude that these results provide strong evidence in favor of N(1440)P${}_{11}$ as a first radial excitation of the $3q$ ground state. The results of the present paper also confirm the conclusion of our previous analysis for ${Q}^{2}l1$ GeV${}^{2}$ that the presentation of N(1440)P${}_{11}$ as a q$^{3}\mathrm{G}$ hybrid state is ruled out.
