In this article, we propose the explicit studies of $\hbar$-deformed meromorphic connections in $\mathfrak{gl}_3(\mathbb{C})$ with an unramified irregular pole at infinity of order $r_\infty=3$ and its spectral dual corresponding to the $\mathfrak{gl}_2(\mathbb{C})$ Painlev\'{e} $4$ Lax pair with one vanishing monodromy at the finite pole. Using the apparent singularities and their dual partners on the spectral curves as Darboux coordinates, we obtain the Hamiltonian evolutions, their reductions to only one non-trivial direction, the Jimbo-Miwa-Ueno tau-functions, the fundamental symplectic two-forms and some associated Hermitian matrix models on both sides. We then prove that the spectral duality connecting both sides extends to all these aspects as an explicit illustration of generalized Harnad's duality. We finally propose a conjecture relating the Jimbo-Miwa-Ueno differential as the $\hbar=0$ evaluation of the Hamiltonian differential in these Darboux coordinates that could provide insights on the geometric interpretation of the $\hbar$ formal parameter., Comment: 66 pages, 2 figures

Swarm robotics promises adaptability to unknown situations and robustness against failures. However, it still struggles with global tasks that require understanding the broader context in which the robots operate, such as identifying the shape of the arena in which the robots are embedded. Biological swarms, such as shoals of fish, flocks of birds, and colonies of insects, routinely solve global geometrical problems through the diffusion of local cues. This paradigm can be explicitly described by mathematical models that could be directly computed and exploited by a robotic swarm. Diffusion over a domain is mathematically encapsulated by the Laplacian, a linear operator that measures the local curvature of a function. Crucially the geometry of a domain can generally be reconstructed from the eigenspectrum of its Laplacian. Here we introduce spectral swarm robotics where robots diffuse information to their neighbors to emulate the Laplacian operator - enabling them to "hear" the spectrum of their arena. We reveal a universal scaling that links the optimal number of robots (a global parameter) with their optimal radius of interaction (a local parameter). We validate experimentally spectral swarm robotics under challenging conditions with the one-shot classification of arena shapes using a sparse swarm of Kilobots. Spectral methods can assist with challenging tasks where robots need to build an emergent consensus on their environment, such as adaptation to unknown terrains, division of labor, or quorum sensing. Spectral methods may extend beyond robotics to analyze and coordinate swarms of agents of various natures, such as traffic or crowds, and to better understand the long-range dynamics of natural systems emerging from short-range interactions.

This paper establishes the optimal sub-Gaussian variance proxy for truncated Gaussian and truncated exponential random variables. The proofs rely on first characterizing the optimal variance proxy as the unique solution to a set of two equations and then observing that for these two truncated distributions, one may find explicit solutions to this set of equations. Moreover, we establish the conditions under which the optimal variance proxy coincides with the variance, thereby characterizing the strict sub-Gaussianity of the truncated random variables. Specifically, we demonstrate that truncated Gaussian variables exhibit strict sub-Gaussian behavior if and only if they are symmetric, meaning their truncation is symmetric with respect to the mean. Conversely, truncated exponential variables are shown to never exhibit strict sub-Gaussian properties. These findings contribute to the understanding of these prevalent probability distributions in statistics and machine learning, providing a valuable foundation for improved and optimal modeling and decision-making processes., Comment: 30 pages, 4 figures

We consider non-twisted meromorphic connections in $\mathfrak{sl}_2(\mathbb{C})$ and the associated symplectic Hamiltonian structure. In particular, we provide explicit expressions of the Lax pair in the geometric gauge supplementing previous results where explicit formulas have been obtained in the oper gauge. Expressing the geometric Lax matrices requires the introduction of specific Darboux coordinates for which we provide the explicit Hamiltonian evolutions. These expressions allow to build bridges between the isomonodromic deformations and the isospectral ones. More specifically, we propose an explicit change of Darboux coordinates to obtain isospectral coordinates for which Hamiltonians match the spectral invariants. In this paper, we build the Hamiltonian system and the corresponding Lax pairs associated to a twisted connection in $\mathfrak{gl}_2(\mathbb{C})$ admitting an irregular and ramified pole at infinity of arbitrary degree, hence corresponding to the Painlev\'{e} $1$ hierarchy. We provide explicit formulas for these Lax pairs and Hamiltonians in terms of the irregular times and standard $2g$ Darboux coordinates associated to the twisted connection. Furthermore, we obtain a map that reduces the space of irregular times to only $g$ non-trivial isomonodromic deformations. In addition, we perform a symplectic change of Darboux coordinates to obtain a set of symmetric Darboux coordinates in which Hamiltonians and Lax pairs are polynomial. In this paper, we study and build the Hamiltonian system attached to any $\mathfrak{gl}_2(\mathbb{C})$ meromorphic connection with arbitrary number of non-ramified poles of arbitrary degrees. In particular, we propose the Lax pairs and Hamiltonian evolutions expressed in terms of irregular times and monodromies associated to the poles as well as $g$ Darboux coordinates defined as the apparent singularities arising in the oper gauge. Moreover, we also provide a reduction of the isomonodromic deformations to a subset of $g$ non-trivial isomonodromic deformations. This reduction is equivalent to a map reducing the set of irregular times to only $g$ non-trivial isomonodromic times. We apply our construction to all cases where the associated spectral curve has genus 1 and recover the standard Painlev\'{e} equations. WEAVE, the new wide-field, massively multiplexed spectroscopic survey facility for the William Herschel Telescope, will see first light in late 2022. WEAVE comprises a new 2-degree field-of-view prime-focus corrector system, a nearly 1000-multiplex fibre positioner, 20 individually deployable 'mini' integral field units (IFUs), and a single large IFU. These fibre systems feed a dual-beam spectrograph covering the wavelength range 366$-$959\,nm at $R\sim5000$, or two shorter ranges at $R\sim20\,000$. After summarising the design and implementation of WEAVE and its data systems, we present the organisation, science drivers and design of a five- to seven-year programme of eight individual surveys to: (i) study our Galaxy's origins by completing Gaia's phase-space information, providing metallicities to its limiting magnitude for $\sim$3 million stars and detailed abundances for $\sim1.5$ million brighter field and open-cluster stars; (ii) survey $\sim0.4$ million Galactic-plane OBA stars, young stellar objects and nearby gas to understand the evolution of young stars and their environments; (iii) perform an extensive spectral survey of white dwarfs; (iv) survey $\sim400$ neutral-hydrogen-selected galaxies with the IFUs; (v) study properties and kinematics of stellar populations and ionised gas in $z<0.5$ cluster galaxies; (vi) survey stellar populations and kinematics in $\sim25\,000$ field galaxies at $0.3\lesssim z \lesssim 0.7$; (vii) study the cosmic evolution of accretion and star formation using $>1$ million spectra of LOFAR-selected radio sources; (viii) trace structures using intergalactic/circumgalactic gas at $z>2$. Context.The Gaia Early Data Release 3 contained the positions, parallaxes and proper motions of 1.5 billion sources, among which some did not fit well the "single star" model. Binarity is one of the causes of this. Aims. Four million of these stars were selected and various models were tested to detect binary stars and to derive their parameters. Methods. A preliminary treatment was used to discard the partially resolved double stars and to correct the transits for perspective acceleration. It was then investigated whether the measurements fit well with an acceleration model with or without jerk. The orbital model was tried when the fit of any acceleration model was beyond our acceptance criteria. A Variability-Induced Mover (VIM) model was also tried when the star was photometrically variable. A final selection has been made in order to keep only solutions that probably correspond to the real nature of the stars. Results. At the end, 338,215 acceleration solutions, about 165,500 orbital solutions and 869 VIM solutions were retained. In this short article we propose a full large $N$ asymptotic expansion of the probability that the $m^{\text{th}}$ power of a random unitary matrix of size $N$ has all its eigenvalues in a given arc-interval centered in $1$ when $N$ is large. This corresponds to the asymptotic expansion of a Toeplitz determinant whose symbol is the indicator function of several intervals having a discrete rotational symmetry. This solves and improves a conjecture left opened by the author. We prove that the topological recursion formalism can be used to quantize any generic classical spectral curve with smooth ramification points and simply ramified away from poles. For this purpose, we build both the associated quantum curve, i.e.~the differential operator quantizing the algebraic equation defining the classical spectral curve considered, and a basis of wave functions, that is to say a basis of solutions of the corresponding differential equation. We further build a Lax pair representing the resulting quantum curve and thus present it as a point in an associated space of meromorphic connections on the Riemann sphere, a first step towards isomonodromic deformations. We finally propose two examples: the derivation of a 2-parameter family of formal trans-series solutions to Painlev\'e 2 equation and the quantization of a degree three spectral curve with pole only at infinity., Comment: 112 pages. We prove that the topological recursion formalism can be used to compute the WKB expansion of solutions of second order differential operators obtained by quantization of any hyper-elliptic curve. We express this quantum curve in terms of spectral Darboux coordinates on the moduli space of meromorphic $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-connections on $\mathbb{P}^1$ and argue that the topological recursion produces a $2g$-parameter family of associated tau functions, where $2g$ is the dimension of the moduli space considered. We investigate the sub-Gaussian property for almost surely bounded random variables. If sub-Gaussianity per se is de facto ensured by the bounded support of said random variables, then exciting research avenues remain open. Among these questions is how to characterize the optimal sub-Gaussian proxy variance? Another question is how to characterize strict sub-Gaussianity, defined by a proxy variance equal to the (standard) variance? We address the questions in proposing conditions based on the study of functions variations. A particular focus is given to the relationship between strict sub-Gaussianity and symmetry of the distribution. In particular, we demonstrate that symmetry is neither sufficient nor necessary for strict sub-Gaussianity. In contrast, simple necessary conditions on the one hand, and simple sufficient conditions on the other hand, for strict sub-Gaussianity are provided. In this paper, we show that it is always possible to deform a differential equation $\partial_x \Psi(x) = L(x) \Psi(x)$ with $L(x) \in \mathfrak{sl}_2(\mathbb{C})(x)$ by introducing a small formal parameter $\hbar$ in such a way that it satisfies the Topological Type properties of Berg\`ere, Borot and Eynard. This is obtained by including the former differential equation in an isomonodromic system and using some homogeneity conditions to introduce $\hbar$. The topological recursion is then proved to provide a formal series expansion of the corresponding tau-function whose coefficients can thus be expressed in terms of intersections of tautological classes in the Deligne-Mumford compactification of the moduli space of surfaces. The second Gaia data release is expected to contain data products from about 22 months of observation. Based on these data, we aim to provide an advance publication of a full-sky Gaia map of RR Lyrae stars. Although comprehensive, these data still contain a significant fraction of sources which are insufficiently sampled for Fourier series decomposition of the periodic light variations. The challenges in the identification of RR Lyrae candidates with (much) fewer than 20 field-of-view transits are described. The goal of this "Habilitation \`a diriger des recherches" is to present two different applications, namely computations of certain partition functions in probability and applications to integrable systems, of the topological recursion developed by B. Eynard and N. Orantin in 2007. Since its creation, the range of applications of the topological recursion has been growing and many results in different fields have been obtained. The first aspect that I will develop deals with the historical domain of the topological recursion: random matrix integrals. I will review the formalism of the topological recursion as well as how it can be used to obtain asymptotic $\frac{1}{N}$ series expansion of various matrix integrals. In particular, a key feature of the topological recursion is that it can recover from the leading order of the asymptotic all sub-leading orders with elementary computations. This method is particularly well known and fruitful in the case of hermitian matrix integrals, but I will also show that the general method can be used to cover integrals with hard edges, integrals over unitary matrices and much more. In the end, I will also briefly mention the generalization to $\beta$-ensembles. In a second chapter, I will review the connection between the topological recursion and the study of integrable systems having a Lax pair representation. Most of the results presented there will be illustrated by the case of the famous six Painlev\'e equations. Though the formalism used in this chapter may look completely disconnected from the previous one, it is well known that the local statistics of eigenvalues in random matrix theory exhibit a universality phenomenon and that the encountered universal systems are precisely driven by some solutions of the Painlev\'{e} equations. We obtain the optimal proxy variance for the sub-Gaussianity of Beta distribution, thus proving upper bounds recently conjectured by Elder (2016). We provide different proof techniques for the symmetrical (around its mean) case and the non-symmetrical case. The technique in the latter case relies on studying the ordinary differential equation satisfied by the Beta moment-generating function known as the confluent hypergeometric function. As a consequence, we derive the optimal proxy variance for the Dirichlet distribution, which is apparently a novel result. We also provide a new proof of the optimal proxy variance for the Bernoulli distribution, and discuss in this context the proxy variance relation to log-Sobolev inequalities and transport inequalities., Comment: 13 pages, 2 figures

The purpose of this article is to analyze the connection between Eynard-Orantin topological recursion and formal WKB solutions of a $\hbar$-difference equation: $\Psi(x+\hbar)=\left(e^{\hbar\frac{d}{dx}}\right) \Psi(x)=L(x;\hbar)\Psi(x)$ with $L(x;\hbar)\in GL_2( (\mathbb{C}(x))[\hbar])$. In particular, we extend the notion of determinantal formulas and topological type property proposed for formal WKB solutions of $\hbar$-differential systems to this setting. We apply our results to a specific $\hbar$-difference system associated to the quantum curve of the Gromov-Witten invariants of $\mathbb{P}^1$ for which we are able to prove that the correlation functions are reconstructed from the Eynard-Orantin differentials computed from the topological recursion applied to the spectral curve $y=\cosh^{-1}\frac{x}{2}$. In this article, we study the large $n$ asymptotic expansions of $n\times n$ Toeplitz determinants whose symbols are indicator functions of unions of arc-intervals of the unit circle. In particular, we use an Hermitian matrix model reformulation of the problem to provide a rigorous derivation of the general form of the large $n$ expansion when the symbol is an indicator function of either a single arc-interval or several arc-intervals with a discrete rotational symmetry. Moreover, we prove that the coefficients in the expansions can be reconstructed, up to some constants, from the Eynard-Orantin topological recursion applied to some explicit spectral curves. In addition, when the symbol is an indicator function of a single arc-interval, we provide the corresponding normalizing constants using a Selberg integral and illustrate the theoretical results with numeric simulations up to order $o\left(\frac{1}{n^4}\right)$. Starting from a $d\times d$ rational Lax pair system of the form $\hbar \partial_x \Psi= L\Psi$ and $\hbar \partial_t \Psi=R\Psi$ we prove that, under certain assumptions (genus $0$ spectral curve and additional conditions on $R$ and $L$), the system satisfies the "topological type property". A consequence is that the formal $\hbar$-WKB expansion of its determinantal correlators, satisfy the topological recursion. Gaia's Radial Velocity Spectrometer (RVS) has been operating in routine phase for over one year since initial commissioning. RVS continues to work well but the higher than expected levels of straylight reduce the limiting magnitude. The end-of-mission radial-velocity (RV) performance requirement for G2V stars was 15 km/s at V = 16.5 mag. Instead, 15 km/s precision is achieved at 15 < V < 16 mag, consistent with simulations that predict a loss of 1.4 mag. Simulations also suggest that changes to Gaia's onboard software could recover ~0.14 mag of this loss. Consequently Gaia's onboard software was upgraded in April 2015. The status of this new commissioning period is presented, as well as the latest scientific performance of the on-ground processing of RVS spectra. In this article we prove that Lax pairs associated with $\hbar$-dependent six Painlev\'e equations satisfy the topological type property proposed by Berg\`ere, Borot and Eynard for any generic choice of the monodromy parameters. Consequently we show that one can reconstruct the formal $\hbar$-expansion of the isomonodromic $\tau$-function and of the determinantal formulas by applying the so-called topological recursion to the spectral curve attached to the Lax pair in all six Painlev\'e cases. The purpose of this article is to study the eigenvalues $u_1^{\, t}=e^{it\theta_1},\dots,u_N^{\,t}=e^{it\theta_N}$ of $U^t$ where $U$ is a large $N\times N$ random unitary matrix and $t>0$. In particular we are interested in the typical times $t$ for which all the eigenvalues are simultaneously close to $1$ in different ways thus corresponding to recurrence times in the issue of quantum measurements. Our strategy consists in rewriting the problem as a random matrix integral and use loop equations techniques to compute the first orders of the large $N$ asymptotic. We also connect the problem to the computation of a large Toeplitz determinant whose symbol is the characteristic function of several arc segments of the unit circle. In particular in the case of a single arc segment we recover Widom's formula. Eventually we explain why the first return time is expected to converge towards an exponential distribution when $N$ is large. The goal of this article is to prove that the determinantal formulas of the Painlev'e 2 system identify with the correlation functions computed from the topological recursion on their spectral curve for an arbitrary non-zero monodromy parameter. The result is established for two different Lax pairs associated to the Painlev'e 2 system, namely the Jimbo-Miwa Lax pair and the Harnad-Tracy-Widom Lax pair, whose spectral curves are not connected by any symplectic transformation. We provide a new method to prove the topological type property without using the insertion operators. In the process, taking the time parameter t to infinity gives that the symplectic invariants F(g) computed from the Hermite-Weber curve and the Bessel curve are equal to respectively. This result generalizes similar results obtained from random matrix theory in the special case where {\theta} = 0. We believe that this approach should apply for all 6 Painlev'e equations with arbitrary monodromy parameters. The goal of this article is to rederive the connection between the Painlev\'e $5$ integrable system and the universal eigenvalues correlation functions of double-scaled hermitian matrix models, through the topological recursion method. More specifically we prove, \textbf{to all orders}, that the WKB asymptotic expansions of the $\tau$-function as well as of determinantal formulas arising from the Painlev\'e $5$ Lax pair are identical to the large $N$ double scaling asymptotic expansions of the partition function and correlation functions of any hermitian matrix model around a regular point in the bulk. In other words, we rederive the "sine-law" universal bulk asymptotic of large random matrices and provide an alternative perturbative proof of universality in the bulk with only algebraic methods. We write the loop equations for the $\beta$ two-matrix model, and we propose a topological recursion algorithm to solve them, order by order in a small parameter. In this article, we study in detail the modified topological recursion of the one matrix model for arbitrary $\beta$ in the one cut case. We show that for polynomial potentials, the recursion can be computed as a sum of residues. This thesis deals with the geometric and integrable aspects associated with random matrix models. Its purpose is to provide various applications of random matrix theory, from algebraic geometry to partial differential equations of integrable systems. The variety of these applications shows why matrix models are important from a mathematical point of view. First, the thesis will focus on the study of the merging of two intervals of the eigenvalues density near a singular point. Specifically, we will show why this special limit gives universal equations from the Painlev\'e II hierarchy of integrable systems theory. Then, following the approach of (bi) orthogonal polynomials introduced by Mehta to compute partition functions, we will find Riemann-Hilbert and isomonodromic problems connected to matrix models, making the link with the theory of Jimbo, Miwa and Ueno. In particular, we will describe how the hermitian two-matrix models provide a degenerate case of Jimbo-Miwa-Ueno's theory that we will generalize in this context. Furthermore, the loop equations method, with its central notions of spectral curve and topological expansion, will lead to the symplectic invariants of algebraic geometry recently proposed by Eynard and Orantin. This last point will be generalized to the case of non-hermitian matrix models (arbitrary $\beta$) paving the way to "quantum algebraic geometry" and to the generalization of symplectic invariants to "quantum curves". Finally, this set up will be applied to combinatorics in the context of topological string theory, with the explicit computation of an hermitian random matrix model enumerating the Gromov-Witten invariants of a toric Calabi-Yau threefold., Comment: PhD thesis in French

We construct a matrix model that reproduces the topological string partition function on arbitrary toric Calabi-Yau 3-folds. This demonstrates, in accord with the BKMP "remodeling the B-model" conjecture, that Gromov-Witten invariants of any toric Calabi-Yau 3-fold can be computed in terms of the spectral invariants of a spectral curve. Moreover, it proves that the generating function of Gromov-Witten invariants is a tau function for an integrable hierarchy. In this article, we show that the double scaling limit correlation functions of a random matrix model when two cuts merge with degeneracy $2m$ (i.e. when $y\sim x^{2m}$ for arbitrary values of the integer $m$) are the same as the determinantal formulae defined by conformal $(2m,1)$ models. Our approach follows the one developed by Berg\`{e}re and Eynard in \cite{BergereEynard} and uses a Lax pair representation of the conformal $(2m,1)$ models (giving Painlev\'e II integrable hierarchy) as suggested by Bleher and Eynard in \cite{BleherEynard}. In particular we define Baker-Akhiezer functions associated to the Lax pair to construct a kernel which is then used to compute determinantal formulae giving the correlation functions of the double scaling limit of a matrix model near the merging of two cuts., Comment: 37 pages, 4 figures. In this article, we define a non-commutative deformation of the "symplectic invariants" of an algebraic hyperelliptical plane curve. The necessary condition for our definition to make sense is a Bethe ansatz. The commutative limit reduces to the symplectic invariants, i.e. algebraic geometry, and thus we define non-commutative deformations of some algebraic geometry quantities. In particular our non-commutative Bergmann kernel satisfies a Rauch variational formula. Those non-commutative invariants are inspired from the large N expansion of formal non-hermitian matrix models.
