Malnutrition remains a important public health condition by affecting mostly children. The present study aimed to examine the effects of prenatal protein undernourishment and postnatal renourishment on the metabolism of pre-adult animals. Forty-five male Wistar rats originating from different litters were used. The Nourished (N, n=15) and Undernourished (U, n=30) groups were maintained on proteic and hypoproteic diets (20% and 5% casein, respectively) from the intrauterine phase until the end of the experiment. The Renourished group (R) contained 15 animals, randomly chosen from U group, that consumed the N diet beginning on day 21 (weaning). All groups were maintained until day 60. The experimental data was acquired daily for body weight, feed and water intake, feces and urine excretion. Data analysis was made with the total results and the ratio between them. The U group animals developed uniformly sparse hair late and experienced intense sweating, features that were not observed during the experiment in the R and N animals groups. The R group had the largest weight gain and feed and water intake ratio/weight at experimental period, followed by the N group animals. The final body weight and food intake decreased gradually in the order N-R-U, but none of the other parameters showed a statistical difference between the N and R animals. Compared to groups N and R, the U group animals consumed 90% and 81% more food and water, respectively. Protein undernourishment induced metabolic dysfunction in the U group animals. The similarity in the experimental parameters of the N and R groups suggests that an early feeding correction was effective in reestablishing the organic functions of the R group animals.

The purpose of this study was to carry out morphologic and topographic analyses of retromolar canals on cone beam computerized tomography (CBCT) scans, comparing findings to others obtained from the corresponding digital panoramic radiographs. Sixty-one CBCT scans were analysed digitally, as well as their corresponding digital panoramic radiographs. The prevalence and distribution of these canals, foramen diameters, and intraosseous communications were also evaluated. On CBCT scans, we found that 24.6% of individuals had at least one retromolar canal. The mean foramen diameter was slightly higher than 1 mm and we could not determine the intraosseous anatomical connections in most cases. The morphology and topography of the retromolar canals were not affected by gender and antimere. In addition, only 22.2% of all tomographically identified canals could be confirmed on digital panoramic radiographs (26.7% of such patients). Regarding all sample, 6.6% of individuals showed retromolar canals on digital panoramic radiographs. We may consider that these structures are clinically relevant findings and, due to the low accuracy of the panoramic radiographs, high-quality tomographic exams should always be asked for presurgical treatment planning.

BACKGROUND The anterior region of the mandible is generally considered to be a safe region to invasive procedures; however, on its internal face, uncountable penetrating canals may be encountered. OBJECTIVE To perform morphometrical and topographical analysis of endosseous canals located at the inner side of the mandibular anterior region, using cone-beam computed tomography. METHODS Forty-six examinations were digitally analyzed. Localization of canals in relation to the midline, trajectories, communications between other anatomic structures and relation with teeth were evaluated. Longitudinal and transversal diameters of the canals and distances to the lower edge and symphysis of the mandible were also measured. RESULTS All individuals had at least 1 canal, with a mean of 2.3 and higher prevalence in the midline region. The adjacent teeth to the canals were usually the incisors but the authors could not determine the connected anatomical structure in most patients. Both the mean diameters were quite similar, about 1 mm; however, the trajectories and distances to the lower edge and symphysis of mandible showed a remarkable heterogeneity among the individuals. CONCLUSIONS These endosseous canals are consistent and clinically relevant findings and should never be underestimated by professionals.

A região da mandíbula compreendida entre os forames mentuais é determinante no contorno facial e considerada pelos cirurgiões como uma região segura, tanto sob o aspecto anatômico, quanto à quantidade óssea remanescente do processo de reab-sorção. Desse modo, é considerada doadora de enxertos ósseos, receptora de implantes e é manipulada nos casos de remodelamento facial através de distrações ósseas e mentoplastias. Apesar da região interforame mentual ter fácil acesso cirúrgico, existem estruturas anatômicas importantes que devem ser avaliadas, sendo que o risco de complicações cirúrgicas neurosensoriais é de: 73% em mentoplastias, 30% em enxertos ósseos realizados em pacientes dentados, 57% em pacientes desdentados e de 10% em instalações de implantes na região. Sob o aspecto vascular, há vasos que penetram na face interna da mandíbula que, uma vez rompidos, causam hemorragias intensas nos espaços sublingual e submandibular, podendo levar à obstrução da via aérea superior e até a morte. Objetivou-se avaliar os detalhes anatômicos da região interforame mentual da mandíbula (RIFM) através de estudo topográfico, estrutural e tomográfico em mandíbulas dentadas (GDen) e desdentadas (GDes). A microscopia eletrônica de varredura evidenciou: um forame lingual (FL) de calibre acentuado no plano sagital mediano, forames acessórios espalhados na face interna da RIFM, o trajeto do canal lingual dentro da compacta óssea lingual, o canal incisivo (CI) e a alça mentual (AM) e, através da criofratura, a disposição difusa de canais ósseos na sínfise. A avaliação histológica constatou a presença do CI, AM, FM e FL na RIFM, inclusive com os constituintes vasculo-nervosos. O CI não apresentou contorno ósseo completo em todas as secções sagitais realizadas e a injeção de Red Mercox evidenciou o CI mais delimitado em GDes. A avaliação tomográfica da RIFM revelou a prevalência de densidade D2 e a presença de Fóvea Sublingual em 86 (44,1%) dos pacientes, com diferença estatisticamente significante entre GDen (2,06±0,66mm) e GDes (1,49±0,28mm) do lado esquerdo. Foi detectada diferença estatística significante entre os gêneros tanto para o lado D (p=0,032) como para o lado E (p=0,007) para a espessura vestibular nas regiões posteriores. A espessura da Cortical óssea Vestibular Anterior (região de sínfise) foi diferente entre GDen F (1,90±0,48 mm) e GDen M (2,60±0,59 mm) e entre GDes F (2,62±0,92 mm). A AM D esteve presente em 107 (54,9%) e em 113 (57,9%) pacientes do lado E, independe do Grupo e do Gênero. O comprimento anterior médio da AM E foi de 1,61 (±0,71) mm. O CI está presente em 86 (44,1%) pacientes e na região de sínfise só foi visualizado em 12 (6%) pacientes, 10 (10%) em GDen e 2 (2,1%) em GDes. Ao menos um Forame Lingual (FL) esteve presente em 134 (68,7%) pacientes. Encontrou-se 10 (7,5%) pacientes que apresentaram forame lingual em iGen, 86 (64,2%) pacientes em sGen e 38 (28,4%) em FLim e FLsm concomitantemente. A comparação entre os FL avaliados em tomografias e em mandíbulas secas através de lupa constatou maior presença de FL em Mandíbulas secas 198 (99%) do que em tomografias 134 (68,7%), independente dos Grupos (p

This study evaluated the expression levels of IGF-I, insulin peptides, and their respective receptors, IGF-IR and IR, in the dental pulp of rats subjected to protein malnutrition. The nourished group (N) received a diet with 20% casein, while the malnourished group (M) received a diet with 5% casein. The renourished group (R) consisted of M group members maintained on the N group diet from the 22nd to the 60th day of life to evaluate the effects of renourishment. Dental pulps of the maxillary first molars were stained with hematoxylin and eosin, and picrosirius red, and were subjected to immunohistochemical tests. Malnutrition altered the odontoblastic layer and the collagen component of the dental pulp. IGF-I and IGF-IR expression levels were higher in the N group but there were no differences in the insulin expression levels between the groups. IR immunoexpression was higher in the N group compared with groups M and R. The results suggest that protein deprivation changed the constitution of the dental pulp and affected the factors that influence its development. The process of renutrition during puberty was not able to support the recovery of pulp morphology.

A educacao do ensino superior encara na atualidade uma modificacao de panoramas e paradigmas que envolvem variaveis como o numero de alunos presentes nas instituicoes de ensino superior, a heterogeneidade dos alunos, a capacidade das instituicoes em receber e formar os alunos, as normas que regem a formacao superior, os profissionais que trabalham nas instituicoes e nas concepcoes educacionais/pedagogicas que os alunos sao formados. Dentro dessa problematica, o uso de metodos que antes eram improvaveis, hoje se mostra possivel e plenamente executavel. Frente este cenario, o trabalho justifica-se por propor o uso da tecnica do grupo operativo como metodo de ensino de formacao superior e para tanto, a metodologia adotada foi de rever teoricamente o assunto, apoiando-se materialmente em textos academicos. Em conclusao, considerando as limitacoes da tecnica como numero de alunos e conhecimentos previos dos comportamentos e papeis adotados pelos alunos trata-se de uma boa alternativa pedagogica para a educacao superior unindo varias disciplinas numa visao interdisciplinar. Use of operative groups as alternative education in higher education Abstract: The education of higher education today faces a change of scenery and paradigms that involve variables such as number of students present in institutions of higher education, the diversity of students, the capacity of institutions to receive and train the students, the standards governing the higher education, professionals working in institutions and educational concepts / teaching that students are trained. Inside this issue, using methods that were unlikely today proves feasible and fully enforceable. Facing this scenario, the work is justified in proposing the use of the technique of the operative group as a teaching method for both higher education and the methodology adopted was to review the subject theory, relying materially from academic texts. In conclusion, considering the limitations of the technique as the number of students and prior knowledge of the behaviors and roles adopted by the students it is a good alternative to higher education pedagogical uniting several disciplines in an interdisciplinary view. Frente este escenario, el trabajo se justifica por proponer el uso del grupo operativo del metodo de ensenanza tecnica y superior y por lo tanto, la metodologia adoptada fue revisar teoricamente la materia, basandose textos academicos materialmente. En conclusion, teniendo en cuenta las limitaciones tecnicas, como el numero de alumnos anteriores y el conocimiento del comportamiento y los roles adoptados por los estudiantes es una buena alternativa educativa para la educacion superior uniendo varias disciplinas en una vision interdisciplinaria. A cartilagem do processo condilar (PC) da mandíbula de ratos wistar é secundária e atua como sítio do crescimento mandibular. O fenômeno depende da ingestão adequada de proteínas e da ação de hormônios, entre eles a insulina. Objetivou-se correlacionar as alterações morfológicas provenientes da subnutrição protéica pré e pós-natal, da renutrição pós-natal com a detecção imunohistoquímica e a quantificação do receptor de insulina (IR) na cartilagem do PC de ratos wistar. Os grupos experimentais formaram-se animais heterogêneos (n=3) de acordo com a ração oferecida, protéica ou hipoprotéica, e com as respectivas idades, nos grupos N e S (nutridos e subnutridos com 60 dias de vida), R (renutridos do desmame até 60 dias), NN (nutridos até 100 dias) e RR (renutridos do desmame até 100 dias). Após a eutanásia, os espécimes foram processados para análise sob microscopia de luz. Cortes sagitais foram submetidos a colorações que permitiram observar o padrão celular, a matriz cartilagínea e o componente colágeno das camadas da cartilagem do PC. Cortes também foram submetidos à imunomarcação do receptor de insulina. Para se observar alteração na arquitetura tecidual do PC, realizou-se a microscopia eletrônica de varredura. Observou-se que o PC contém praticamente o mesmo número de células em proliferação na fase púbere e no adulto maduro (N=NN; p>0,05). A subnutrição determinou a diminuição significativa do número de células da camada proliferativa do PC (N≠S; p p 0, 05). O traumatismo dentario e um problema de saude publica bucal altamente prevalente na populacao, sobretudo em criancas com maxilas prognatas. As fraturas conjugadas de esmalte e dentina sao as mais predominantes dentre as fraturas de dentes permanentes. A colagem dentaria e uma alternativa terapeutica para dentes fraturados. Entretanto, envolve fatores que influenciam no sucesso do tratamento: existencia do remanescente dentario, tempo de espera para o tratamento, envolvimento de esmalte, dentina e câmara pulpar e a tecnica de colagem. Este trabalho descreve uma tecnica simplificada de colagem do dente 11 de uma crianca de 9 anos do sexo masculino com fratura de esmalte e dentina sem envolvimento pulpar da clinica de graduacao da Disciplina de Odontopediatria da Faculdade de Odontologia da Universidade de Sao Paulo. A importância do manejo do paciente, a indicacao, a limitacao e o prognostico dessa alternativa terapeutica tambem sao assuntos discutidos neste estudo.

A cartilagem articular da cabeça da mandíbula (CAM) é constituída por uma cartilagem secundária recoberta por tecido conjuntivo fibroso e, portanto, definida como fibrocartilagínea. Ela é constantemente submetida a forças de compressão e cisalhamento decorrentes da mastigação necessitando de lubrificação e capacidade de reparo. O envelhecimento é considerado um dos principais fatores para o aparecimento de alterações degenerativas nas articulações sinoviais. A lubricina é reconhecidamente um proteoglicano encontrado nas cartilagens articulares cuja função primordial é a lubrificação limítrofe. A via SMAD2, tem sido associada à capacidade de manutenção e reparo da cartilagem, e a sua fosforilação na cadeia de ligação (p-SMAD2L) foi relacionada ao aumento no tempo de fosforilação na cadeia C-terminal (p-SMAD2) e da transcrição gênica. Objetivo: Estudar as alterações morfológicas da CAM e as expressões da lubricina, p-SMAD2L e do colágeno tipo I no envelhecimento. Métodos: cortes coronais da CAM de ratos wistar com 2, 12 e 24 meses de vida foram corados pelas técnicas da hematoxilina e eosina, azul de toluidina e safranina-O. A imuno-histoquímica foi usada para detectar a localização da lubricina, p-SMAD2L e colágeno tipo I. Resultados: Notou-se modificações estruturais atribuídas ao processo natural do envelhecimento da CAM. Ainda, se verificou um aumento do colágeno tipo I nas camadas mais profundas e cartilaginificação da matriz extracelular (MEC) nas camadas superficiais. No grupo idoso, houve redução na concentração de proteoglicanos, na expressão da lubricina e na densidade e porcentagem de células p-SMAD2L. Conclusões: a CAM sofre modificações com o envelhecimento, inclusive degenerativas, e diminui sua capacidade de lubrificação e reparo em virtude da menor expressão da lubricina e p-SMAD2L. Sugere-se que a p-SMAD2L está envolvida na produção e acúmulo da lubricina na CAM The mandibular condylar cartilage (MCC) consists of a secondary cartilage covered by fibrous connective tissue and, therefore, defined as fibrocartilage. It is constantly subjected to compression and shear forces resulting from chewing requiring lubrication and repair capability. Aging is considered one of the main factors for the appearance of degenerative changes in synovial joints. Lubricin is a proteoglycan found in articular cartilages whose primary function is boundary lubrication. SMAD2 signaling pathway has been associated with cartilage maintenance and repair, and its phosphorylation in the linker region (p-SMAD2L) was related to the increase in half-life of C-terminal phospho-SMAD2 (p-SMAD2) and gene transcription. Objective: To study the morphological alterations of MCC and the expressions of the lubricin, p-SMAD2L and type I collagen in aging. Methods: Coronal sections of the MCC from wistar rats with 2, 12 and 24 months old were stained with hematoxylin and eosin, toluidine blue and safranin-O. Immunohistochemistry were used for detection of lubricin, p-SMAD2L and type I collagen. Also, the total cell density, p-SMAD2L cells density and percentage were determined. Results: Structural modifications of the MCC related with natural aging process were observed. An increase in the expression of type I collagen in the deeper layers and \"cartilaginification\" of the extracellular matrix (ECM) in the superficial layers were detected. In the old group, it was observed a reduction in proteoglycan content, in the expression of the lubricin and in the density and percentage of positive cells for the p-SMAD2L. Conclusion: MCC undergoes structural and degenerative modifications with aging and decreases its lubrication and repair capacity due to the lower expression of the lubricin and p-SMAD2L. This study suggests that p-SMAD2L is involved in the production and accumulation of the lubricin in MCC
