Abstract This work investigates the efficiency of green-synthesized WO3 nanoflakes for the removal of methylene blue dye. The synthesis of WO3 nanoflakes using Hyphaene thebaica fruit extract results in a material with a specific surface area of 13 m2/g and an average pore size of 19.3 nm. A combined theoretical and experimental study exhibits a complete understanding of the MB adsorption mechanism onto WO3 nanoflakes. Adsorption studies revealed a maximum methylene blue adsorption capacity of 78.14 mg/g. The pseudo-second-order model was the best to describe the adsorption kinetics with a correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.99, suggesting chemisorption. The intra-particle diffusion study supported a two-stage process involving surface adsorption and intra-particle diffusion. Molecular dynamic simulations confirmes the electrostatic attraction mechanism between MB and the (002) WO3 surface, with the most favorable adsorption energy calculated as -0.68 eV. The electrokinetic study confirmed that the WO3 nanoflakes have a strongly negative zeta potential of -31.5 mV and a uniform particle size of around 510 nm. The analysis of adsorption isotherms exhibits a complex adsorption mechanism between WO3 and MB, involving both electrostatic attraction and physical adsorption. The WO3 nanoflakes maintained 90% of their adsorption efficiency after five cycles, according to the reusability tests.

Abstract Magnesium oxide nanoparticles (MgO NPs) represent an interesting inorganic material widely utilized across various fields including sensing, antimicrobial applications, optical coatings, water purification, fuel additives, absorbents, and catalysis, owing to their exceptional broad energy band gap, surface affinity, and strong chemical and thermal durability. In this investigation, MgO NPs were successfully synthesized through a green approach employing fruit extract from the gingerbread tree (Hyphaene thebaica). Analysis via scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirmed their agglomerated quasi-spherical shape with a size range of 20–60 nm. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern exhibited prominent peaks at planes (200) and (220), indicating the high crystallinity of MgO NPs with a crystallite size of 32.6 ± 5 nm while Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analysis highlighted the composition comprises 40.47% Magnesium and 48.64% Oxygen by weight. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) revealed characteristic Mg-O bonds through peaks at 560 cm−1 and 866 cm−1, while Raman spectroscopy affirmed the cubic structure of MgO. Subsequently, the photocatalytic performance of MgO NPs under visible light irradiation was evaluated. Remarkably, the addition of 1 g/L of MgO nano-catalyst resulted in a degradation efficiency of 98% after 110 min on methylene blue dye, showcasing the high catalytic activity of MgO NPs. This remarkable photocatalytic efficiency emphasizes the potential of MgO NPs in environmental remediation.

Abstract Cerium oxide nanoparticles possess unique properties that make them promising candidates in various fields, including cancer treatment. Among the proposed synthesis methods for CNPs, biosynthesis using natural extracts, offers an eco-friendly and convenient approach for producing CNPs, particularly for biomedical applications. In this study, a novel method of biosynthesis using the aqueous extract of Eucalyptus camaldulensis leaves was used to synthesize CNPs. Scanning electron microscopy and Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques revealed that the synthesized CNPs exhibit a flower-like morphology. The particle size of CNPs obtained using Powder X-ray diffraction peaks and TEM as 13.43 and 39.25 nm. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed the effect of biomolecules during the synthesis process and the formation of CNPs. The cytotoxicity of biosynthesized samples was evaluated using the MTT method demonstrating the potential of these samples to inhibit MCF-7 cancerous cells. The viability of the MCF-7 cell line conducted by live/dead imaging assay confirmed the MTT cytotoxicity method and indicated their potential to inhibit cancerous cells. Furthermore, the successful uptake of CNPs by MCF-7 cancer cells, as demonstrated by confocal microscopy, provides evidence that the intracellular pathway contributes to the anticancer activity of the CNPs. In general, results indicate that the biosynthesized CNPs exhibit significant cytotoxicity against the MCF-7 cancerous cell line, attributed to their high surface area.

Abstract Green synthesis aligns with the global demand for eco-friendly and sustainable technologies, reducing the dependency on harmful chemicals and high-energy processes typically used in conventional synthesis techniques. This study highlights a novel green synthesis route for nickel cobaltite nanoparticles (NiCO2O4 NPs) utilizing Hyphaene thebaica extract as a natural reducing and stabilizing agent. The synthesized NiCO2O4 NPs, with sizes ranging from 20 to 30 nm, exhibited uniform diamond-like structures as confirmed by SEM and TEM imaging. XRD analysis verified the polycrystalline nature of these nanoparticles, while EDS measurements confirmed the elemental composition of Ni and Co. The presence of functional groups was subsequently verified through FT-IR analysis, and Raman spectroscopy further confirmed phase formation. Electrochemical evaluations revealed significant pseudocapacitive behavior, showing a specific capacitance of 519 F/g, demonstrating their potential for high-performance supercapacitors. To further assess the applicability of the synthesized NiCO2O4 NPs, their photocatalytic activity against methylene blue (MB) dye was investigated, resulting in a 99% degradation rate. This impressive photocatalytic efficiency highlights their potential application in environmental remediation. Overall, this work underscores the significant potential of green synthesis methods in producing high-performance nanomaterials while simultaneously reducing environmental impact and promoting sustainable development.

Abstract Burning fossil fuels emits a significant amount of $$\hbox {CO}_{2}$$ CO 2 , causing climate change concerns. $$\hbox {CO}_{2}$$ CO 2 Capture and Storage (CCS) aims to reduce emissions, with fullerenes showing promise as $$\hbox {CO}_{2}$$ CO 2 adsorbents. Recent research focuses on modifying fullerenes using an electric field. In light of this, we carried out DFT studies on some B, N, and P doped $$\hbox {C}_{20}$$ C 20 ( $$C_{20-n}X_n$$ C 20 - n X n , n = 0, 1, 2, and 3; X = B, N, and P) in the absence and presence of an electric field in the range of 0-0.02 a.u.. The cohesive energy was calculated to ensure their thermodynamic stability showing, that despite having lesser cohesive energies than $$\hbox {C}_{20}$$ C 20 , they appear in a favorable range. Moreover, the charge distribution for all structures was depicted using the ESP map. Most importantly, we evaluated the adsorption energy, height, and $$\hbox {CO}_{2}$$ CO 2 angle, demonstrating the B and N-doped fullerenes had the stronger interaction with $$\hbox {CO}_{2}$$ CO 2 , which by far exceeded $$\hbox {C}_{20}$$ C 20 ’s, improving its physisorption to physicochemical adsorption. Although the adsorption energy of P-doped fullerenes was not as satisfactory, in most cases, increasing the electric field led to enhancing $$\hbox {CO}_{2}$$ CO 2 adsorption and incorporating chemical attributes to $$\hbox {CO}_{2}$$ CO 2 -fullerene interaction. The HOMO–LUMO plots were obtained by which we discovered that unlike the P-doped $$\hbox {C}_{20}$$ C 20 , the surprising activity of B and N-doped $$\hbox {C}_{20}$$ C 20 s against $$\hbox {CO}_{2}$$ CO 2 originates from a high concentration of the HOMO-LUMO orbitals on B, N and neighboring atoms. In the present article, we attempt to introduce more effective fullerene-based materials for $$\hbox {CO}_{2}$$ CO 2 adsorption as well as strategies to enhance their efficiency and revealing adsorption nature over B, N, and P-doped fullerenes and in the end, hope to encourage more experimental research on these materials within growing electric field for $$\hbox {CO}_{2}$$ CO 2 capture in the future.

Abstract In this work, localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) sensing as applicable in the detection of Trenbolone acetate dopant is demonstrated. We show that the LSPR of the Trenbolone acetate/silver nanoparticle (Tren Ac/AgNPs) complex is sensitive to changes in the adsorbent concentration. The results show an average redshift of + 18 nm in the LSPR peak with variations in intensity and broadening behavior of the LSPR band of the Tren Ac/AgNPs complex. AgNPs were synthesized using laser ablation in liquid (LAL) technique with water as the solvent. UV–Vis spectroscopy was used for absorbance measurements and particle size and morphology were monitored using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The aggregation behavior of the Tren Ac/AgNPs complex was monitored using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Molecular Electrostatic Potential (MEP) and the HOMO–LUMO orbitals of the optimized Trenbolone acetate structure were obtained using Density Function Theory (DFT). The molecule was optimized at the B3LYP level of theory using the 6–311 basis set carried out using the Gaussian 09 software package. The results showed that O2− is Trenbolone acetate’s active site that would interact with Ag+ to form a complex that would influence the plasmon behavior. The results presented in this work demonstrate the feasibility of LSPR for anabolic androgenic steroid detection.

Synthesized silver nanoparticles via laser liquid ablation were characterized using XRD, TEM, EDS, UV–Vis, and Raman spectroscopy. The AgNPs were then conjugated with HCQ at different concentrations. The study aimed to explore the effectiveness of HCQ against malaria and autoimmune diseases as well as how conjugating AgNPs with HCQ would broaden its activity against various infections and diseases, owing to the antimicrobial activity of AgNPs. The electronic and vibrational study of HCQ and its mixture showed a successful conjugation of the two, which would increase the potent of HCQ against SARS Coronavirus (SARS-COV-2) infection. Steady-state absorption measurements revealed a broadband peak at around 337.4 nm (3.68 eV), corresponding to a π to π* transition in the quinoline ring of the HCQ molecule. In addition, the AgNPs Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance (LSPR) band centred around 408 nm exhibited an intensity decrease with an increase in the concentration of HCQ. The experimental Raman spectra exhibited bands similar to the density function theory (DFT) calculated spectra centred at 392 cm−1, 768 cm−1, 1392 cm−1, 2928 cm−1, 3224 cm−1, 3656 cm−1, and 3808 cm−1. TEM, EDS, and XRD analysis confirmed the formation of 8.75 nm AgNPs. Understanding the electronic and vibrational spectroscopic properties of the interaction between HCQ and AgNPs, as deduced from the spectroscopic results supported by DFT, can significantly benefit researchers in the pharmaceutical industry. Researchers could apply this knowledge to overcome drug resistance, repurpose existing drugs, and reduce the side effects of conventional clinically approved drugs.

IntroductionThe Nubui River is a primary source of water for drinking purposes and other domestic activities in the rural communities dotted along its riparian zone, with agriculture being the major activity occurring in this important ecotone. The river has become a potential sink for agrochemical residue, including heavy metals, and has apparent aesthetic water quality issues, with associated health consequences. This study, therefore, assessed the health risks of heavy metals within the rural populations in the catchment areas, who have limited sources of improved water supply.MethodsThe concentration of iron (Fe), lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), and zinc (Zn) was assessed on cumulatively 275 water samples, using a Perkin Elmer PINAAcle 900 T atomic absorption spectrophotometer for 11 months. A cross-sectional survey was conducted amongst 338 community members, following field observations on utilisation types, aesthetic appeal, and perceived quality of water from the Nubui River. To determine the potential human and ecological risks of heavy metals, the hazard quotient, chronic daily intake, contamination factor, and health pollution indices of heavy metals were computed. STATA version 16 was used to analyse the survey results.ResultsDescriptive statistics of average concentrations of heavy metals in surface water at all sampling stations showed the pattern Hg < Pb < Cd < Zn < Fe, with relatively low concentrations, between 0.001 and 0.004 mg/L for Hg, 0.0011 and 0.0019 mg/L for Pb, 0.0461 and 0.0739 mg/L for Zn, and 0.2409 and 0.377 mg/L for Fe. The findings, however, showed relatively high cadmium levels between 0.0215 mg/L and 0.0383 mg/L in two of five sampling stations in comparison with the World Health Organisation (WHO) drinking water guideline values in some months. Hazard quotient values indicate that the population is safe from the non-carcinogenic health risks of exposure to heavy metals through oral routes. The contamination factor and heavy metal pollution indices for cadmium exceed recommended guideline values of 1 and 100, respectively. Meanwhile, 73.1% of community members evidently preferred the Nubui River for various domestic activities with 86.1% of them utilising it for drinking purposes. This occurrence results in exposure to associated health risks.

Green synthesized nanoparticles are believed to alleviate the detrimental effects of chemical fertilizers and the multidrug resistance of various microbial strains. This study evaluates the use of bush tea-mediated zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) for chickpea fertilization and assesses their cytotoxicity, antioxidant and antibacterial activity. The study demonstrated that the application of ZnO NPs improved the number of leaves, nodules, biomass and yield of chickpea cultivars under glasshouse conditions. The authors suggest that biosynthesized ZnO NPs are a good plant growth stimulant. The control with no nanoparticles application, had higher values of photosynthetic rate and water use efficiency in the Desi genotype whereas for the Kabuli genotype, 25 mg/L showed higher values of stomatal conductance and transpiration efficiency, while 15 mg/L gave the highest water use efficiency and photosynthetic rate. Furthermore, the inhibitory activities of bacteria were reported in which E. coli and S. aureus were the most sensitive bacterial strains. The ZnO NPs also quenched free radicals that demonstrate antioxidant activity. Thus, they can be beneficial to both plants and humans as they reduce oxidative stress that can cause diseases. Furthermore, toxicity to cells was evaluated and ZnO NPs were less toxic to the studied cells with IC50 values of 16.17 µg/mL and 21.30 µg/mL against lung cancer and embryonic cell lines. Thus, the use of ZnO nanoparticles with antimicrobial activity could help fight against several diseases attacking humans and plants.

Abstract This study reports the effects of a computationally informed and avocado-seed mediated Phyto engineered CuS nanoparticles as fertilizing agent on the ionome and amino acid metabolome of Pinto bean seeds using both bench top and ion beam analytical techniques. Physico-chemical analysis of the Phyto engineered nanoparticles with scanning-electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy confirmed the presence of CuS nanoparticles. Molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the interaction of some active phytocompounds in avocado seeds that act as reducing agents with the nano-digenite further showed that 4-hydroxybenzoic acid had a higher affinity for interacting with the nanoparticle’s surface than other active compounds. Seeds treated with the digenite nanoparticles exhibited a unique ionome distribution pattern as determined with external beam proton-induced X-ray emission, with hotspots of Cu and S appearing in the hilum and micropyle area that indicated a possible uptake mechanism via the seed coat. The nano-digenite also triggered a plant stress response by slightly altering seed amino acid metabolism. Ultimately, the nano-digenite may have important implications as a seed protective or nutritive agent as advised by its unique distribution pattern and effect on amino acid metabolism. At psychrophilic temperatures (4). For psychrophilic anaerobic digestion (PAD) to be successful, investigation of cold-adapted microbial consortia involved in methane production is critical. This study aimed to investigate the microbial community driving enhanced methane production from the cold-adaptation process and bioaugmentation of PAD with cold-adapted inoculum (BI). Microbial consortia in cattle manure (CM) and food waste (FW) were adapted and applied during batch PAD of CM and FW to bioaugment methane production at 15 °C. Cold adaptation and PAD with BI resulted in cumulative specific methane yields of 0.874 ± 0.231 and 0.552 ± 0.089 L CH4 g−1 volatile solids, respectively, after 14 weeks, while the absence of BI (control) led to acidification and no methane production during PAD. Following 16S rRNA V4–V5 amplicon sequencing and metagenomic analyses, Methanosarcina was revealed as a key driver of methanogenesis during cold adaptation and PAD bioaugmentation. Furthermore, based on the predictive functional and metabolic analysis of the communities, possible synergies were proposed in terms of substrate production and utilization by the dominant microbial groups. For instance, during methane production, Bacteroides and Methanobrevibacter were possibly involved in a syntrophic relationship, which promoted methanogenesis by Methanosarcina. These findings provide insight into the prospective microbial synergies that can be harnessed and/or regulated in cold-adapted inoculum for the improvement of methane production during PAD.

Bio-synthesized calcium carbonate nanoparticles (CaCO3 NPs) have gained attention because of their cost-effectiveness, minimal toxicity, biological compatibility, cytological compatibility, pH sensitivity, gradual biological degradability and ecological friendliness. As the global population is expected to rise to billions, innovative strategies to enhance crop production are necessary to address poverty challenges. This study assesses the effect of the bioinspired CaCO3 NPs as nanofertilizers on the development, gas exchange and yield parameters of tomatoes (Lycopersicon esculentum) and their antifungal activity. The trial was conducted in a 2×4 completely randomised design (CRD) with four replicates. The treatments consisted of different CaCO3 NPs concentrations (Control = 0 mg/L, 50 mg/L, 150 mg/L and 250 mg/L) on two tomato cultivars (Money-maker and Heinz-1370), and the antifungal activity of the CaCO3 NPs was tested against pathogens that cause diseases in tomato plants. The results demonstrate that CaCO3 NPs exhibit moderate antifungal activity against Cladosporium cladosporioides, Fusarium oxysporum and Penicillium halotolerans at minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of 125, 250 and 500 µg/mL. Results further show that 250 mg/L exhibits the highest number of leaves on Money-maker, while 150 mg/L gave the highest number of leaves at week 8 for Heinz-1370. The application of 150 mg/L yielded the highest number of flowers in both cultivars compared to other treatments. Remarkably, different CaCO3 NP concentrations varied the gas exchange parameters and revealed that at concentrations higher than 150 mg/L, the efficiency of water use during the vegetative and fruiting stages was lowered. The highest fruit weight of the Money-maker was observed at 50 mg/L, whereas Heinz-1370’s fruit weight was higher at 250 mg/L, indicating that the two cultivars are affected differently by the foliar application of CaCO3 NPs. Therefore, the findings of this study suggest that the inclusion of a green synthesis of CaCO3 NPs as a nanofertilizer has the potential to promote tomato growth and yield.

Small-scale crop production has been significantly impacted by the heavy price, limited supply, and frequent shortage of inorganic fertilisers, which is partly attributable to the Covid-19 pandemic outbreak and led to rising oil and food prices. Thus, integrating environmentally friendly agricultural practices that can improve crop productivity and advance the sustainability of agricultural cropping systems is critical.This study synthesized and characterised MgO and CaCO3 Moringa oleifera nanoparticles and assessed their effects on groundnut genotypes. The effect of biosynthesized MgO and CaCO3 nanoparticles using Moringa oleifera extract on the growth and yield of groundnut genotypes exposed to different concentrations of 50, 100 and 200 mg/L was examined. The experiment was carried laid out in a 3 × 8 factorial completely randomized design (CRD) with eight replicates per treatment. Each plant was sprayed with 5 ml of the solution crystalline size of the MgO and CaCO3 nanoparticles 2.48 nm and 10.30 nm, respectively. Abstract Hyphaene thebaica fruits were used for the fabrication of spherical erbium oxide nanoparticles (HT-Er2O3 NPS) using a one-step simple bioreduction process. XRD pattern revealed a highly crystalline and pure phase with crystallite size of ~ 7.5 nm, whereas, the W–H plot revealed crystallite size of 11 nm. FTIR spectra revealed characteristic Er-O atomic vibrations in the fingerprint region. Bandgap was obtained as 5.25 eV using K-M function. The physicochemical and morphological nature was established using Raman spectroscopy, reflectance spectroscopy, SAED and HR-TEM. HT-Er2O3 NPS were further evaluated for antidiabetic potential in mice using in-vivo and in-vitro bioassays. The synthesized HT-Er2O3 NPS were screened for in vitro anti-diabetic potentials against α-glucosidase enzyme and α-amylase enzyme and their antioxidant potential was evaluated using DPPH free radical assay. A dose dependent inhibition was obtained against α-glucosidase (IC50 12 μg/mL) and α-amylase (IC50 78 μg/mL) while good DPPH free radical scavenging potential (IC50 78 μg mL−1) is reported. At 1000 μg/mL, the HT-Er2O3 NPS revealed 90.30% and 92.30% inhibition of α-amylase and α-glucosidase enzymes. HT-Er2O3 NPs treated groups were observed to have better glycemic control in diabetic animals (503.66 ± 5.92*** on day 0 and 185.66 ± 2.60*** on day 21) when compared with positive control glibenclamide treated group. Further, HT-Er2O3 NPS therapy for 21 days caused a considerable effect on serum total lipids, cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL and LDL as compared to untreated diabetic group. In conclusion, our preliminary findings on HT-Er2O3 NPS revealed considerable antidiabetic potential and thus can be an effective candidate for controlling the post-prandial hyperglycemia. However, further studies are encouraged especially taking into consideration the toxicity aspects of the nanomaterial.

This review article highlights essential manufacturing strategies for the formation of graphene reinforced polymeric nanocomposites. For graphene reinforced thermoplastic, thermosetting and conducting matrix nanomaterials have been manufactured using solution casting, melt blending, in situ polymerization, electrospinning, 3D printing, and several other techniques. Solution processing has been well thought-out as an advantageous technique, relative to melt mixing, in terms of graphene dispersion in polymeric matrices. An in situ polymerization process has also been considered valuable to form homogeneously dispersed polymer/graphene nanocomposites having superior physical characteristics. Nevertheless, the manufacturing techniques for polymer/graphene nanocomposites have relative advantages and disadvantages to be considered for graphene-based nanocomposites. Moreover, numerous challenges need to be overcome to optimize the processing parameters for the fabrication of high-performance polymer/graphene nanocomposites.

Polymeric coatings have been widely selected for the corrosion resistance of metallic surfaces. Both the conducting and non-conducting polymers have been applied for corrosion confrontation. The conducting polymers usually possess high electrical conductivity and corrosion resistance features. On the other hand, non-conducting hydrophobic polymers have also been used to avert the metal erosion. To improve the corrosion inhibition performance of the polymer coatings, nanocarbon nanofillers have been used as reinforcement. Graphene, especially, has gained an important position in the research on the corrosion-protecting nanocomposite coatings. Here, graphene dispersion and matrix–nanofiller interactions may significantly improve the anti-corrosion performance to protect the underlying metals. The graphene nanofiller may form an interconnecting percolation network in the polymers to support their electrical conductivity and thus their corrosion confrontation characteristics. Further research on the polymer/graphene nanocomposite and its anti-corrosion mechanism may lead to great advancements in this field.

In this study, the polyethersulfone (PES) membranes were established by surface modification using C, N codoped-TiO2/WO3 (LTW) photocatalytic nanocomposite to amelioration of the membrane performance in terms of antifouling and self-cleaning properties. The nanocomposite membranes were characterized by ATR-FTIR, SEM, AFM, and water contact angle (WCA). The photocatalytic membranes' performance was evaluated using assessment of the pure water flux (PWF), antifouling behavior, photoactivity, and long-term filtration. The membrane modification improved morphology and hydrophilicity of the membranes surface, contributing to the enhanced permeability (PWF of 49.65 kg/m2.h), and substantial antifouling property (FRR of 96.96 %) as well as photoactivity (94.36 % dye removal) of the optimal photocatalytic membrane (M3 membrane). The long-term filtration of the optimal membrane represented its high performance and noteworthy antifouling resistance.

The high computational demand of the Density Functional Theory (DFT) based method for screening new materials properties remains a strong limitation to the development of clean and renewable energy technologies essential to transition to a carbon-neutral environment in the coming decades. Machine Learning comes into play with its innate capacity to handle huge amounts of data and high-dimensional statistical analysis. In this paper, supervised Machine Learning models together with data analysis on existing datasets obtained from a high-throughput calculation using Density Functional Theory are used to predict the Seebeck coefficient, electrical conductivity, and power factor of inorganic compounds. The analysis revealed a strong dependence of the thermoelectric properties on the effective masses, we also proposed a machine learning model for the prediction of highly performing thermoelectric materials which reached an efficiency of 95 percent. The analyzed data and developed model can significantly contribute to innovation by providing a faster and more accurate prediction of thermoelectric properties, thereby, facilitating the discovery of highly efficient thermoelectric materials.

According to their antiviral and antibacterial capabilities, silver nanoparticles hold great promise in a wide variety of applications, including drug delivery carriers. The coating properties of silver nanoparticles (various sizes ranging from 1 to 5 nm) with the most commonly used anti-malarial drug, artemisinin, were investigated in this study using quantum mechanical and classical atomistic molecular dynamics simulations in order to determine their suitability for use as drug delivery in the treatment of malaria and COVID-19 diseases. Density functional theory (DFT) at the B3LYP/6-311++g(d,p) level of theory was used to simulate the optimal structure, frequency, charge distribution, and electrostatic potential maps of artemisinin. The adsorption of drugs on the Ag nanoparticle (55 silver atoms) was investigated using DFT simulations. Then, using molecular dynamics simulations, the coating of AgNPs (various sizes) with drug molecules was investigated. The influence of AgNPs’ size and composition on the coating with artemisinin was determined in order to identify the most suitable candidate for drug delivery. This type of modeling may aid experimental groups in developing effective and safe therapies.

Nanoparticles produced from various metal elements including copper have been used in the treatment of infectious diseases in response to antibiotic failure due to microbial resistance. Copper is recommended for use in the production of nanoparticles largely because of its accessibility and affordability. This study aimed to synthesise copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO-NPs) using leaf extracts of Athrixia phylicoides and assess their antibacterial, antioxidant and cytotoxicity properties. The characterization of the obtained NPs was done through X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Our results showed that the NPs had a highly crystalline, quasi-spherical shape with an average diameter of 42 nm. Also, gram-positive bacteria Bacillus cereus and Staphylococcus aureus were the most susceptible to CuO-NPs with MIC values of 0.62 mg/mL and 0.16 mg/mL, respectively, as shown by the broth microdilution method. In addition, CuO-NPs demonstrated strong radical 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) inhibitory activity with an IC50 value of 10.68 ± 0.03 μg/mL. However, the cytotoxicity activity determined by (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide) (MTT) assay revealed that the CuO-NPs were not toxic to human embryonic kidney cells (HEK 293 cells) at an LC50 value of 66.08 ± 0.55 μg/mL. The synthesised CuO-NPs showed high antibacterial, and antioxidant potency and less toxicity. Therefore, they could be a feasible alternative source of therapeutic agents in treating bacterial and oxidative stress-induced diseases.

For the first time, the physical and magnetic properties of biosynthesized ZnO/Fe2O3, ZnO/ZnFe 2O4, and ZnFe 2O4 nanoparticles (NPs) from aqueous extract of rosemary leaves extract are reported. The findings demonstrated the green approach as environmentally benign to generate bimetallic alloy NPs from immiscible metals. The crystallographic analyses in line with microscopic observations revealed crystalline, well-agglomerated NPs with hexagonal structures confirming the presence of ZnO. The chemical bonds of Fe–O and Zn–O were detected as well as Fe, Zn, and O elements, showing their existence within the samples. Besides, the magnetic properties portrayed the same paramagnetic behavior due to similar average size distribution whereas the defects coming from oxygen vacancies agreed with the photoluminescence spectroscopy. Overall, the annealing temperature significantly influenced the final structure of generated NPs amongst other parameters.

Cobalt oxide, a multifunctional, anti-ferromagnetic p-type semiconductor with an optical bandgap of ~2.00 eV, exhibits remarkable catalytic, chemical, optical, magnetic, and electrical properties. In our study, cobalt oxide nanoparticles (Co3O4 NPs) were prepared by the green synthesis method using dried fruit extracts of Hyphaene thebaica (doum palm) as a cost-effective reducing and stabilizing agent. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) depicts stable hollow spherical entities which, consist of interconnected Co3O4 NPs, while energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) indicates the presence of Co and O. The obtained product was identified by X-ray diffraction (XRD) that showed a sharp peak at (220), (311), (222), (400), (511) indicating the high crystallinity of the product. The Raman peaks indicate the Co3O4 spinel structure with an average shift of Δν~9 cm−1 (191~470~510~608~675 cm−1). In the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) spectrum, the major bands at 3128 cm−1, 1624 cm−1, 1399 cm−1, 667 cm−1, and 577 cm−1 can be attributed to the carbonyl functional groups, amides, and Co3O4 NPs, respectively. The photocatalytic activity of the synthesized NPs was evaluated by degrading methylene blue dye under visible light. Approximately 93% degradation was accomplished in the reaction time of 175 min at a catalyst loading of 1 g/L under neutral pH. This study has shown that Co3O4 is a promising material for photocatalytic degradation.

The application of nanotechnology in antimicrobial and cytotoxicity studies has recently been receiving increased interest. This paper report on the use of Persea americana Mill. (avocado) seed husk to synthesize hydronium jarosite nanoparticles in a facile, economical, and eco-friendly manner. We describe firstly the synthesis of hydronium jarosite nanoparticles using P. americana (avocado) seed husk aqueous extract as a reducing and chelating agent for the reduction of iron (II) sulfate heptahydrate. Secondly, we describe the characterization of the nanoproduct with scanning electron microscopy (SEM); energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX); high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM); X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) analysis; Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR); and, lastly, the cytotoxicity and antibacterial effect of hydronium jarosite nanoparticles using murine macrophage cells (Raw 264.7) cell lines, Gram-negative (Escherichia coli), Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus), and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. These hydronium jarosite avocado seed husk-mediated nanoparticle-coated 2D sheets did not show any antibacterial activity against the bacteria tested but did show concentration-dependent cytotoxicity. Further research is required to optimize the antibacterial properties and reduce the cytotoxicity of this nanomaterial synthesized using green nanochemistry.

Background: Nanoparticles are globally synthesized for their antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, wound healing, catalytic, magnetic, optical, and electronic properties that have put them at the forefront of a wide variety of studies. Among them, zinc oxide (ZnO) has received much consideration due to its technological and medicinal applications. In this study, we report on the synthesis process of ZnO nanoparticles using Athrixia phylicoides DC natural extract as a reducing agent. Methods: Liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC-MS) was used to identify the compounds responsible for the synthesis of ZnO nanoparticles. Structural, morphological and optical properties of the synthesized nanoparticles have been characterized through X-ray diffraction (XRD), Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Results: LC-MS results showed that different flavonoids and polyphenols, as well as Coumarin, an aromatic compound, reacted with the precursor to form ZnO nanoparticles. XRD and UV-Vis analysis confirmed the synthesis of ZnO nanoparticles, with a spherical shape showed in SEM images. The quasi-spherical ZnO crystals had an average crystallite size of 24 nm. EDS and FTIR analysis confirmed that the powders were pure with no other phase or impurity. Conclusions: This study successfully demonstrated that the natural plant extract of A. phylicoides DC. can be used in the bio-reduction of zinc nitrate hexahydrate to prepare pure ZnO nanoparticles, thus, extending the use of this plant to an industrial level.

Graphene is one of the most significant carbon nanomaterials, with a one-atom-thick two-dimensional nanostructure. Like other nanocarbons, graphene has been used as a polymer reinforcement. This review explores the impact of graphene and graphene-based nanocomposites on aerospace applications. The fabrication and indispensable features of graphene-derived nanocomposites have been considered. Numerous polymers and nanocomposites have been employed for aerospace systems such as reinforced thermosetting/thermoplastic polymers and epoxy/graphene nanocomposites. Moreover, graphene-modified carbon-fiber-based composites have been discussed for the space sector. Aerospace nanocomposites with graphene have been investigated for superior processability, structural features, morphology, heat stability, mechanical properties, flame resistance, electrical/thermal conductivity, radiation protection, and adhesion applications. Subsequently, epoxy and graphene-derived nanocomposites have been explored for heat/mechanically stable aerospace engineering structures, radiation-shielding materials, adhesives, coatings, etc.

Abstract Of recent, immense attention has been given to chitosan in the biomedical field due to its valuable biochemical and physiological properties. Traditionally, the chief source of chitosan is chitin from crab and shrimp shells. Chitin is also an important component of fish scales, insects and fungal cell walls. Thus, the aim of this study was to isolate and characterize chitosan from locally available material for potential use in the biomedical field. Chitosan ash and nitrogen contents ranged from 1.55 to 3.5% and 6.6 to 7.0% respectively. Molecular weight varied from 291 to 348KDa. FTIR spectra revealed high degree of similarity between locally isolated chitosan and commercial chitosan with DD ranging from 77.8 to 79.1%. XRD patterns exhibited peaks at 2θ values of 19.5° for both mushroom and banana weevil chitosan while Nile perch scales chitosan registered 3 peaks at 2θ angles of 12.3°, 20.1° and 21.3° comparable to the established commercial chitosan XRD pattern. Locally isolated chitosan exhibited antimicrobial activity at a very high concentration. Ash content, moisture content, DD, FTIR spectra and XRD patterns revealed that chitosan isolated from locally available materials has physiochemical properties comparable to conventional chitosan and therefore it can be used in the biomedical field.

Abstract From the first month of the COVID-19 pandemic, the potential antiviral properties of hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) and chloroquine (CQ) against SARS-CoV-2 suggested that these drugs could be the appropriate therapeutic candidates. However, their side effects directed clinical tests towards optimizing safe utilization strategies. The noble metal nanoparticles (NP) are promising materials with antiviral and antibacterial properties that can deliver the drug to the target agent, thereby reducing the side effects. In this work, we applied both the quantum mechanical and classical atomistic molecular dynamics approaches to demonstrate the adsorption properties of HCQ/CQ on Ag, Au, AgAu, and Pt nanoparticles. We found the adsorption energies of HCQ/CQ towards nanoparticles have the following trend: PtNP > AuNP > AuAgNP > AgNP. This shows that PtNP has the highest affinity in comparison to the other types of nanoparticles. The (non)perturbative effects of this drug on the plasmonic absorption spectra of AgNP and AuNP with the time-dependent density functional theory. The effect of size and composition of NPs on the coating with HCQ and CQ were obtained to propose the appropriate candidate for drug delivery. This kind of modeling could help experimental groups to find efficient and safe therapies.

In this study, removal of Chromium (Cr) in a novel process includes reduction, adsorption, oxidation and complexion in a UV/Sulfite/Manganese dioxide (USM) investigated. In our study, in the optimal condition was MnO2 = 1 mM, Na2SO3 = 0.4 mM, 6 min reaction time (synthetic sample) and at pH 7, and 10 mg L−1 Cr removed completely. In the first stage, the sulfite-sulfate radicals react with Cr, and then Cr-S are removed from the solution by forming a complex with MnOOH·. Advantage of this method against other process include less time, higher efficiency, less use of reactive materials, and no need for large pH changes without release of sulfite or sulfate. At pH 7 about 60% and 40% of reaction species were reduction and oxidative species respectively. Considering the better efficiency at pH 7, it shows that reducing species have a more important and primary role in Cr removal. Also, the amount of energy consumed decreases from 16.14 to 3.25 kWh per cubic meter, Kobs (min−1) 0.533to 0.1837 and robs (mg/L.min) increase from 26.68 to 45.2 with change of Cr concentration from 50 to 250 mg L−1 respectively. The total cost of the USM process is much lower than other methods. In the UV, U Manganese dioxide, UV/Sulfite, and USM methods, the total cost were estimated 9.80–18.75, 5.74–8.75, 5.72–1.51, and 2.74–0.55 $ when the Cr concentration increase 100 to 250 mg L−1, respectively.

Manganese oxide and manganese oxide decorated on graphene thin films were successfully synthesized and decorated on graphene via successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) method. The morphological, elemental, structural, optical and electrochemical properties of the deposited films were respectively studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX, or EDS), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), UV–vis spectrophotometry and a 3-electrode potentiostat. Decorating the manganese oxide film on graphene improved the morphological, structural, optical, and electrochemical features of the deposited films. SEM image revealed irregularly fused capsule-like nanoparticles, EDX spectra confirmed the elemental composition of the films while the structure of the film improved from amorphous to crystalline after decorating on graphene. Optical results showed improved the transmittance and optical band gap values of the films upon decoration on the graphene. Electrochemical studies showed good cyclic voltammograms and a recorded maximum specific capacitance value of 194 F g−1. The films find potential application in electrochemical storage devices and optical devices.

The effect of 5 MeV Cu++ ions irradiation on structural and optical properties of Anatase TiO2 nanoparticles (TiO2-NPs) is investigated. For this purpose, TiO2-NPs are irradiated with different Cu++ ions fluences, ranging from 1 × 1015 to 1 × 1016 ions/cm2 at room temperature. XRD results confirm the Ti3O7 phase appear at the dose of 5 × 1015 ions/cm2 and peak intensity of Ti3O7 phase gradually increases with an increase of Cu++ ions irradiation dose. At the dose of 1 × 1016 ions/cm2 TiO2 Anatase phase were transformed to Rutile phase. Same observations are confirmed from Raman spectroscopy. High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) reveals that morphology converted into wavy shape and crystal structure detrioted with increase Cu ion irradiation dose to form vacancy loops and interstitial loops. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) shows that TiO2-NPs have been fused to form a cluster of nanoparticles at high Cu ion beam dose, while bandgap of TiO2-NPs reduces from 3.19 eV to 2.96 eV as a function of Cu++ irradiation fluence. These phase transformations and crystal damage are the responsible for optical bandgap reduction. The mechanism for the currently observed phase transformation of TiO2 and coalescence of TiO2-NPs are discussed in term of thermal spikes model. In this work, we studied the effect of varying the volume of mixed halide perovskites on the structural, morphological and optical properties of deposited thin films. A two-step process of spin coating and dipping technique was employed so as to enhance deposition of the films. The samples were subjected to heat treatment after each deposition cycle in order to increase the crystalinity and grain size of the films. The band gap, refractive index, dielectric constant and optical conductivity of the mixed halide perovskites were calculated. The single term Wemple DiDomenico oscillator formulae were applied in determining the expression of the parameter n below the optical band gap in relation to the energy.A significant observation in this study was that the band gap of mixed halide perovskites was extremely lowered compared to the high band energy of its halide perovskite, which reveals the band gap alteration effect of mixed halide perovskites. The refractive index and dielectric constant of the halide and mixed halide perovkites showed results in the wavelength range of 300–600 nm, which is significant for photovoltaic materials. A cost-effective successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) method was used to deposit copper (I) thiocyanate (CuSCN) thin films on glass and steel substrates for this study. The deposited thin films were characterized for their structural, morphological, optical and electrochemical properties using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), UV–visible spectroscopy and VersaSTAT potentiostat. A direct band gap of 3.88 eV and 3.6 eV with film thickness of 0.7 μm and 0.9 μm was obtained at 20 and 30 deposition cycles respectively. The band gap, microstrain, dislocation density and crystal size were observed to be thickness dependent. The specific capacitance of the CuSCN thin film electrode at 20 mV/s was 760 F g−1 for deposition 20 cycles and 729 F g−1 for deposition 30 cycles. Cobalt oxide nanoparticles were successfully biosynthesized by complete green process using aqueous leaf extracts of Sageretia thea as chelating agent. Diverse techniques were applied for characterization. Antibacterial (with and without UV illumination), antileishmanial, antioxidant and enzyme inhibition applications were assessed, while freshly isolated macrophages and red blood cells were used for biocompatibility studies. Good antibacterial nature and enhancement of bactericidal nature upon UV modulation is reported. Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli are indicated as most susceptible bacterial strains. Significant cytotoxic potential is revealed with IC50 calculated as 12.82 µg/ml and 3.16 µg/ml against the axenic leishmanial promastigote and amastigote cultures respectively. Biogenic cobalt oxide nanoparticles indicated DPPH free radical scavenging potential, while moderate antioxidant capacity and reducing power was demonstrated. Bioinspired cobalt oxide also demonstrated alpha amylase and protein kinase inhibition at higher concentrations. Biogenic cobalt oxide was found as more cytotoxic to macrophages (IC50 = 58.55 µg/ml) then to RBC’s (IC50 >200 µg/ml). Our results indicate green synthesis as an alternative, effective and eco-friendly method for the biosynthesis of cobalt oxide nanoparticles with numerous biological applications. Green and ecofriendly route for biosynthesis of lead oxide nanoparticles has been successfully demonstrated using aqueous leaf extracts of Sageretia thea (Osbeck.). Biosynthesized PbO (∼27 nm) nanoparticles were extensively characterized using XRD, FTIR, Raman, EDS etc. Morphology was studied through HR-TEM/SEM. As synthesized nanoparticles were investigated for their iv-vitro biological properties. Antibacterial activities revealed enhancement upon modulation by UV in a concentration dependent manner. Pseudomonas aeruginosa was found to be the most resistant strain (MIC = 250 µg/mL and MICuv = 31.25 µg/ml). MTT cytotoxicity on leishmania promastigotes and amastigotes revealed significant inhibition as indicated by their IC50 values of 14.7 µg/mL and 11.95 µg/m respectively. Cytotoxicity was also confirmed using brine shrimp lethality (IC50 = 27.7 µg/mL). Bio-compatibility evaluation indicated cytotoxicity to freshly isolated human macrophages (IC50 = 57.1 µg/mL). Insignificant alpha-amylase inhibition and moderate protein kinase inhibition was revealed. Antioxidant activities indicated free radical scavenging activity (58 ± 2.45) at 200 µg/mL. Moderate total reducing power and total antioxidant activity was also indicated. Overall, we conclude lead oxide as a potential candidate for biological applications, however further studies are recommended on their in vitro and in vivo cytotoxicity. The greatest challenge of the current generation and generations to come is antimicrobial resistance, as different pathogenic bacteria have continuously evolved to become resistant to even the most recently synthesized antibiotics such as carbapenems. Resistance to carbapenems limits the therapeutic options of MDR infections as they are the only safe and effective drugs recommended to treat such infections. This scenario has complicated treatment outcomes, even to the commonest bacterial infections. Repeated attempts to develop other approaches have been made. The most promising novel therapeutic option is the use of nanomaterials as antimicrobial agents. Thus, this study examined the efficacy of Camellia sinensis extract (CSE) and Prunus africana bark extract (PAE) green synthesized Copper oxide nanoparticles (CuONPs) against carbapenem-resistant bacteria. Furthermore, the photocatalytic and antioxidant activities of CuONPs were evaluated to determine the potential of using them in a wide range of applications. CuONPs were biosynthesized by CSE and PAE. UV vis spectroscopy, X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Dynamic light scattering (DLS), Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) were used to characterize the nanoparticles. CuONPs susceptibility tests were carried out by the agar well diffusion method. The photocatalytic and antioxidant activities of the CuONPs were determined by the methylene blue and DPPH free radical scavenging assays, respectively. UV vis absorbance spectra registered surface plasmon resonance peaks between 272 and 286 nm, confirming the presence of CuONPs. The XRD array had nine strong peaks at 2θ values typical of CuONPs. FTIR spectra exhibited bands associated with organic functional groups confirming capping and functionalization of the CuONPs by the phytochemicals. DLS analysis registered a net zeta potential of +12.5 mV. SEM analysis revealed that the nanoparticles were spherical and clustered with a mean diameter of 6 nm. Phytosynthesized CuONPs exhibited the highest growth suppression zones of 30 mm with MIC ranging from 30 to 125 μg/ml against MDR bacteria. Furthermore, the CuONPs achieved a methylene blue dye photocatalysis degradation efficiency of 85.5% and a free radical scavenging activity of 28.8%. PAE and CSE successfully bio-reduced copper ions to the nanoscale level with potent antimicrobial, photocatalysis, and antioxidant activities.

The endless development in nanotechnology has introduced new vitality in device fabrication including biosensor design for biomedical applications. With outstanding features like suitable biocompatibility, good electrical and thermal conductivity, wide surface area and catalytic activity, nanomaterials have been considered excellent and promising immobilisation candidates for the development of high-impact biosensors after they emerged. Owing to these reasons, the present review deals with the efficient use of nanomaterials as immobilisation candidates for biosensor fabrication. These include the implementation of carbon nanomaterials—graphene and its derivatives, carbon nanotubes, carbon nanoparticles, carbon nanodots—and MXenes, likewise their synergistic impact when merged with metal oxide nanomaterials. Furthermore, we also discuss the origin of the synthesis of some nanomaterials, the challenges associated with the use of those nanomaterials and the chemistry behind their incorporation with other materials for biosensor design. The last section covers the prospects for the development and application of the highlighted nanomaterials.

Abstract Biosynthesis of bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) nanorods was performed using dried fruit extracts of Hyphaene thebaica as a cost effective reducing and stabilizing agent. XRD, DRS, FTIR, zeta potential, Raman, HR-SEM, HR-TEM, EDS and SAED were used to study the main physical properties while the biological properties were established by performing diverse assays. The zeta potential is reported as − 5.21 mV. FTIR indicated Bi–O and V–O vibrations at 640 cm−1 and 700 cm−1/1120 cm−1. Characteristic Raman modes were observed at 166 cm−1, 325 cm−1 and 787 cm−1. High resolution scanning and transmission electron micrographs revealed a rod like morphology of the BiVO4. Bacillus subtilis, Klebsiella pneumonia, Fusarium solani indicated highest susceptibility to the different doses of BiVO4 nanorods. Significant protein kinase inhibition is reported for BiVO4 nanorods which suggests their potential anticancer properties. The nanorods revealed good DPPH free radical scavenging potential (48%) at 400 µg/mL while total antioxidant capacity of 59.8 µg AAE/mg was revealed at 400 µg/mL. No antiviral activity is reported on sabin like polio virus. Overall excellent biological properties are reported. We have shown that green synthesis can replace well established processes for synthesizing BiVO4 nanorods.

Economical Successive Ionic Layer Adsorption and Reaction (SILAR) method was used to deposit copper iodide (CuI) thin films on amorphous glass and stainless steel (SS) substrates at room temperature. The resulting thin films were characterized for their structural, morphological and optical properties using X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and UV–vis Spectroscopy respectively. The energy band gap observed for the material was 2.98 and 2.78 eV at 20 and 30 cycles respectively. The electrochemical properties of this p-type semiconductor were characterized by cyclic voltammetry (CV), galvanostatic charge-discharge (GCD) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in Na2SO4 electrolyte. The CuI film on SS gave a specific capacitance of 93 Fg−1 at a scan rate of 2 mV/s with an excellent long-term cycle and reversible stability. To secure existing water resources is one of the imposing challenges to attain sustainability and ecofriendly world. Subsequently, several advanced technologies have been developed for water treatment. The most successful methodology considered so far is the development of water filtration membranes for desalination, ion permeation, and microbes handling. Various types of membranes have been industrialized including nanofiltration, microfiltration, reverse osmosis, and ultrafiltration membranes. Among polymeric nanocomposites, nanocarbon (fullerene, graphene, and carbon nanotubes)-reinforced nanomaterials have gained research attention owing to notable properties/applications. Here, fullerene has gained important stance amid carbonaceous nanofillers due to zero dimensionality, high surface areas, and exceptional physical properties such as optical, electrical, thermal, mechanical, and other characteristics. Accordingly, a very important application of polymer/fullerene C60 nanocomposites has been observed in the membrane sector. This review is basically focused on talented applications of polymer/fullerene nanocomposite membranes in water treatment. The polymer/fullerene nanostructures bring about numerous revolutions in the field of high-performance membranes because of better permeation, water flux, selectivity, and separation performance. The purpose of this pioneering review is to highlight and summarize current advances in the field of water purification/treatment using polymer and fullerene-based nanocomposite membranes. Particular emphasis is placed on the development of fullerene embedded into a variety of polymer membranes (Nafion, polysulfone, polyamide, polystyrene, etc.) and effects on the enhanced properties and performance of the resulting water treatment membranes. Polymer/fullerene nanocomposite membranes have been developed using solution casting, phase inversion, electrospinning, solid phase synthesis, and other facile methods. The structural diversity of polymer/fullerene nanocomposites facilitates membrane separation processes, especially for valuable or toxic metal ions, salts, and microorganisms. Current challenges and opportunities for future research have also been discussed. Future research on these innovative membrane materials may overwhelm design and performance-related challenging factors.

This article presents a simple and low-cost green synthesized single-layer NiO selective solar absorber nanocoating prepared by spin coating on a Cu substrate at different rotational speeds (RS). The effects of substrate RS on the structural, morphological, chemical, and optical properties of the NiO nanocoatings were thoroughly investigated. The XRD results reveal the formation of pure diffraction peaks indexed to face-centered cubic NiO nanocoatings. SEM confirmed the uniform distribution of the NiO thin films with a nanosphere-like structure and the influence of RS variation on the formation of NiO nanostructures. EDS and XPS confirmed the presence of Ni and O in the green synthesized NiO coatings. AFM showed homogeneous nanopillar-like NiO thin films with the average surface roughness decreasing from 13.6 to 9.06 nm as the RS increased from 700 to 1300 RPM. Raman spectroscopy of the nanocoatings showed normal modes related to longitudinal optical and transverse optical phonons, and a combination of both, which implies the presence of a defect-rich or anti-ferromagnetically ordered NiO film responsible for the occurrence of more scattering peaks. UV–Vis–NIR and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were employed to characterize the optical properties of the nanocoatings. The green synthesized NiO nanocoatings deposited at 700 RPM exhibited excellent solar absorptance (α) of 0.92 and low thermal emittance (ɛ) of 0.11. The optical properties of the selective materials obtained in the present work were correlated with the non-stoichiometric nature of the spin-coated sample, multiple reflections, and interference-induced light absorption on the green synthesized surface. These results suggest that the NiO thin films prepared through this simple and environmentally benign green synthesis method can be promising candidates for efficient solar selective absorbers.

In this work, the chemical bath deposition (CBD) technique was utilized in the synthesis of transition metals/GO nanocomposites (Co3O4/MnO2/NiO/GO) for applications in supercapacitor electrodes. The nanocomposites after characterization showed that the electrically conductive nature and wide surface area of graphene oxide (GO) accounted for its incorporation into the nanocomposites. The synergy between the nanocomposites accounts for their improved performance and stable phase. The XRD results revealed cubic, orthorhombic, cubic, and mixed phases for the Co3O4/GO (CG), MnO2/GO (MG), NiO/GO (NG), and Co3O4/MnO2/NiO/GO (CMNG), respectively; their morphologies showed platelet nanoparticles with few agglomerates, with an average particle size of 69 ± 12 nm, 37 ± 09 nm, 58 ± 36 nm, and 36 ± 08 nm, respectively. For the produced materials, electrochemical results revealed maximum specific capacitance values of 2482 F/g from cyclic voltammograms and 1280.48 F/g from the galvanometric test. The results showed that the composites outperform single transition metal oxide (TMO) electrodes, with graphene oxide boosting the electrode performance.

In this study, we theoretically investigate the response of a germanium thin film under femtosecond pulsed laser irradiation. Electron and lattice temperatures, as well as material-specific optical properties such as dielectric function and reflectivity, were calculated during the irradiation using an extended two-temperature model coupled with the carrier density rate equation and the Drude model. Melting and ablation fluence thresholds were also predicted, resulting in 0.14 J cm−2 and 0.35 J cm−2, respectively. An ultrafast change in both optical and thermal properties was detected upon laser irradiation. Results also indicate that thermal melting occurs after germanium takes on a metallic character during irradiation, and that the impact ionization process may have a critical role in the laser-induced thermal effect. Therefore, we suggest that the origin of the thermal modification of germanium surface under femtosecond laser irradiation is mostly due the impact ionization process and that its effect becomes more important when increasing the laser fluence.

Antibiotics have been the nucleus of chemotherapy since their discovery and introduction into the healthcare system in the 1940s. They are routinely used to treat bacterial infections and to prevent infections in patients with compromised immune systems and enhancing growth in livestock. However, resistance to last-resort antibiotics used in the treatment of multidrug-resistant infections has been reported worldwide. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate green synthesized nanomaterials such as silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) as alternatives to antibiotics. UV-vis spectroscopy surface plasmon resonance peaks for AgNPs were obtained between 417 and 475 nm. An X-ray diffraction analysis generated four peaks for both Prunus africana extract (PAE) and Camellia sinensis extract (CSE) biosynthesized AgNPs positioned at 2θ angles of 38.2°, 44.4°, 64.5°, and 77.4° corresponding to crystal planes (111), (200), (220), and (311), respectively. A dynamic light-scattering analysis registered the mean zeta potential of +6.3 mV and +0.9 mV for PAE and CSE biosynthesized nanoparticles, respectively. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy spectra exhibited bands corresponding to different organic functional groups confirming the capping of AgNPs by PAE and CSE phytochemicals. Field emission scanning electron microscopy imaging showed that AgNPs were spherical with average size distribution ranging from 10 to 19 nm. Biosynthesized AgNPs exhibited maximum growth inhibitory zones of 21 mm with minimum inhibitory concentration and minimum bactericidal concentration of 125 and 250 μg/ml, respectively, against carbapenem-resistant bacteria.

Hydrothermally synthesized electrodes of Co3O4@MnO2@NiO/GO were produced for use in supercapacitors. Graphene oxide (GO) was incorporated into the nanocomposites used for electrode synthesis due to its great surface area and electrical conductivity. The synergistic alliance among these composites and GO enhances electrode performance, life span, and stability. The structural properties obtained from the X-ray diffraction (XRD) results suggest that nanocomposites are crystalline in nature. The synergistic alliance among these composites and GO enhances electrode performance, life span, and stability. Performance assessment of these electrodes indicates that their characteristic performance was enhanced by C2+ radiation, with the uttermost performance witnessed for electrodes radiated with 5.0 × 1015 ions/cm2.

We show in this article the possibilities of employing an environmentally friendly, uncomplicated, economical and sustainable green synthesis technique effected by natural extracts from waste maize (zea mays lea) materials to synthesize some functional transition single metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs). Copper oxides (Cu2O and CuO), zinc oxide (ZnO), nickel oxide (NiO), chromium oxide (Cr2O3), iron oxide (Fe2O3) and cadmium oxide (CdO) were successfully synthesized using this facile method. Structural characterizations by X-ray diffraction (XRD) for the various oxides show the phases and space groups corresponding to their individual structures. Images from the high resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) revealed various shapes and sizes of the obtained nanoparticles. Results from the attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) revealed different kinds of functional groups present in the synthesized metal oxide nanoparticles. We showed that the phytochemicals in the natural extracts obtained from the waste materials from Zea mays lea plant is pivotal to the bio-reduction, stabilization and chelation of the metal oxide nanoparticles.

This contribution reports the biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using aqueous leaf extracts of D. mucronata and their diverse applications. Synthesized AgNPs were characterized using diverse techniques, i.e. UV, XRD, EDS, SEM, TEM, FTIR and TGA/DTA. These techniques confirmed the authenticity of the synthesized nanoparticles. The bimodulated AgNPs revealed the highest radical scavenging potential, i.e. 86.4% relative to plant extract at 600 μg/ml. Escherichia coli was found to be the most susceptible strain to AgNPs. Growth of vancomycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus was also inhibited. Hemolytic activity revealed negligible hemolysis, indicating the biocompatible nature of biomodulated AgNPs. Furthermore, no mutagenic properties were shown by the biogenic AgNPs. Synthesized nanoparticles possessed promising insecticidal potential and had no phytotoxic activity. No haemagglutination was observed for biogenic AgNPs.

The Williamson-Hall (W-H) equation, which has been used to obtain relative crystallite sizes and strains between samples since 1962, is revisited. A modified W-H equation is derived which takes into account the Scherrer equation, first published in 1918, (which traditionally gives more absolute crystallite size prediction) and strain prediction from Raman spectra. It is found that W-H crystallite sizes are on average 2.11 ± 0.01 times smaller than the sizes from Scherrer equation. Furthermore the strain from the W-H plots when compared to strain obtained from Raman spectral red-shifts yield factors whose values depend on the phases in the materials – whether anatase, rutile or brookite. Two main phases are identified in the annealing temperatures (350 °C–700 °C) chosen herein – anatase and brookite. A transition temperature of 550 °C has been found for nano-TiO2 to irreversibly transform from brookite to anatase by plotting the Raman peak shifts against the annealing temperatures. The W-H underestimation on the strain in the brookite phase gives W-H/Raman factor of 3.10 ± 0.05 whereas for the anatase phase, one gets 2.46 ± 0.03. The new βtot2cos2θ-sinθ plot and when fitted with a polynomial yield less strain but much better matching with experimental TEM crystallite sizes and the agglomerates than both the traditional Williamson-Hall and the Scherrer methods. There is greater improvement in the model when linearized – that is the βtotcos2θ-sinθ plot rather than the βtot2cos2θ-sinθ plot. The transparent wing of the dragonfly Aeshna cyanea has been investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), optical microscopy (OPM), energy‐dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy (EDS) and reflectance spectroscopy. Four cells (D1–D4) were studied and classified according to their general morphology. The OPM depicted the vein‐joint characterised by the distribution of resilin. EDS technique showed common elements such as carbon, oxygen, and chlorine. SEM analysis revealed thin membranes reinforced with a network of hallow veins. Spikes and round shape of microstructures were identified. The roughness of the pruinosity was estimated, which indicates the shape and curvature of the microstructures that essentially play a significant role in the optical response observed. The study can be essential to design and improve micro‐air vehicles.

Sageretia thea (Osbeck.) was used as an effective chelating agent for the biosynthesis of iron oxide nanoparticles (IONP's) and extensively characterized through XRD, FTIR, Raman spectroscopy, Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy, HR-SEM/TEM and SAED. Antibacterial assays against five human pathogenic bacterial strains were carried out and minimum inhibitory concentrations were calculated. Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MIC: 7.4 µg/mL) was the most susceptible strain to biosynthesized IONPs. All of the fungal strains showed susceptibility to the IONPs. MTT cytotoxic assay was carried out against the promastigote and amastigote cultures of Leishmania tropica and their IC50 values were calculated as 17.2 and 16.75 µg/mL. The cytotoxic potential was further assessed using brine shrimps, and the IC50 was calculated as 16.46 µg/mL. Moderate antioxidant activities were reported. Human RBCs and macrophages were found to be biocompatible with biogenic IONPs (IC50 > 200 µg/mL).
