23. Understanding Trauma Exposure and Adjustment to University: The Role of Orientation and Transition Programs in Promoting Resilience Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

This study investigated undergraduate students at Brescia University College and their degree of involvement in transition programs. Participation in the events during Orientation Week and My First Six Weeks was examined in order to determine whether the programs had an effect on the resilience of individuals who reported exposure to a potentially traumatic event (PTE). The sample consisted of 33 undergraduate psychology students. Participants completed the Life Events Checklist (LEC), which measured their PTE exposure, and the Scale of Protective Factors (SPF-24), which assessed their individual protective factors and overall resilience. 96.97% of the respondents reported a history of trauma. A Pearson correlation analysis revealed two positive relationships. The first correlation identified an association between trauma exposure and social skills. The second correlation was found between degree of involvement and social support. The results of this study are discussed in terms of the posttraumatic growth framework (Tedeschi & Calhoun, 1996).

A study of 219 referrals to a psychology outpatient service was conducted to determine how to improve treatment-completion rates. Patients who needed psychological help for anger had a high dropout rate. The study concluded that group treatment and selection of patients who were most apt to complete treatment would improve the services.

Abstract

Desmocollins (Dscs) and desmogleins (Dsgs) are cell-adhesion molecules involved in the formation of desmosome cell—cell junctions and share structural similarities to classical cadherins such as E-cadherin. In order to identify and provide quantitative information on the types of protein—protein interactions displayed by the type 2 isoforms and investigate the role of Ca2+ in this process, we have developed an Escherichia coli expression system to generate recombinant proteins containing the first two extracellular domains, namely Dsg2(1-2) and Dsc2(1-2). Analytical ultracentrifugation, chemical cross-linking, CD, fluorescence and BIAcore have been used to provide the first direct evidence of Ca2+ binding to desmosomal cadherins. These studies suggest that Dsc2(1-2) not only exhibits homophilic interactions in solution, but can also form heterophilic interactions with Dsg2(1-2). The latter, on the other hand, shows much weaker homophilic association. Our results further demonstrate that heterophilic interactions are Ca2+-dependent, whereas the Ca2+-dependence of homophilic association is less clear. Our data indicate that the functional properties of Dsc2(1-2) are more similar to those of classical cadherins, consistent with the observation that Dsc shares a higher level of sequence homology with classical cadherins than does Dsg. In addition to corroborating the conclusions of previously reported transfection studies which suggest the formation of lateral heterodimers and homodimers, our results also provide direct quantitative information on the strength of these interactions which are essential for understanding the adhesion mechanism.

Abstract

As cities around the world continue to grow in population, they also evolve complexities that challenge human understanding. This is the human gap, which tends to exacerbate fundamental problems such as the urban divide. Complex Adaptive Systems theory is an interdisciplinary framework and one tool that can be used in the conceptualization of not only our existing urban paradigm, but also in a resilient, sustainable future. In this framework resilience is defined as the capacity of a system to absorb shock and reorganize while undergoing change so as to still retain essentially the same function, structure and feedbacks - and therefore the same identity. This thesis explores the implications and possibilities of a theoretical translation of Complex Adaptive Systems theory to a sustainable design methodology for building resilience. This methodology will be applied to the design of the New England Center for Arts and Technology, a replication site inspired by the Manchester Bidwell Corporation in Pittsburgh, dedicated to transforming lives and communities through adult job training and youth arts education. The role of architecture in this will be primarily to support the resilient capacity of human beings and the evolving social-ecological system as a whole.
