Objective and Impact Statement . We propose an automated method of predicting Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH) from CT scans. A deep convolutional network segments regions of interest from the scans. These regions are then combined with MRI information to predict NPH. To our knowledge, this is the first method which automatically predicts NPH from CT scans and incorporates diffusion tractography information for prediction. Introduction . Due to their low cost and high versatility, CT scans are often used in NPH diagnosis. No well-defined and effective protocol currently exists for analysis of CT scans for NPH. Evans' index, an approximation of the ventricle to brain volume using one 2D image slice, has been proposed but is not robust. The proposed approach is an effective way to quantify regions of interest and offers a computational method for predicting NPH. Methods . We propose a novel method to predict NPH by combining regions of interest segmented from CT scans with connectome data to compute features which capture the impact of enlarged ventricles by excluding fiber tracts passing through these regions. The segmentation and network features are used to train a model for NPH prediction. Results . Our method outperforms the current state-of-the-art by 9 precision points and 29 recall points. Our segmentation model outperforms the current state-of-the-art in segmenting the ventricle, gray-white matter, and subarachnoid space in CT scans. Conclusion . The anesthesia regimen used during one lung ventilation (OLV) carry the potential to affect intra-operative course and post-operative outcomes, by its effects on pulmonary vasculature and alveolar inflammation. This narrative review aims to understand the pathophysiology of acute lung injury during one lung ventilation, and to study the effects of inhalational versus intravenous anaesthetics on intraoperative and post-operative outcomes, following thoracic surgery. For this purpose, we independently searched 'PubMed', 'Google Scholar' and 'Cochrane Central' databases to find out randomized controlled trials (RCTs), in English language, which compared the effects of intravenous versus inhalational anaesthetics on intraoperative and post-operative outcomes, in elective thoracic surgeries, in human beings. In total, 38 RCTs were included in this review. Salient results of the review are- Propofol reduced intraoperative shunt and maintained better intraoperative oxygenation than inhalational agents. However, use of modern inhalational anaesthetics during OLV reduced alveolar inflammation significantly, as compared to propofol. Regarding post-operative complications, the evidence is not conclusive enough but slightly in favour of inhalational anaesthetics. Thus, we conclude that modern inhalational anaesthetics, by their virtue of better anti-inflammatory properties, exhibit lung protective effects and hence, seem to be safe for maintenance of anesthesia during OLV in elective thoracic surgeries. Arterial vascular calcification (VC) represents formation of calcium phosphate deposits on the interior of arteries, which could restrict blood flow leading to heart health problems, including morbidity and mortality. VC is a complex and tightly regulated process that involves transformation of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) to bone-like cells and subsequent deposition of calcium as hydroxyapatite. Natural bioactives, including quercetin (Q), curcumin (C), resveratrol (R), and magnesium (Mg), have been reported to inhibit VC. Thus, we conducted an in vitro study using rat vascular smooth muscle cells (rVSMCs) to evaluate the protective effect of natural bioactives found in OptiCel, that is, Mg combined with polyphenols (PPs), Q, C, and R. Calcification was induced by culturing rVSMCs in a high phosphate (HP) medium. The addition of Mg and Q + C + R separately decreased the HP-induced calcium deposition by 37.55% and 42.78%, respectively. In contrast, when Mg was combined with Q, C, and R, the inhibition of calcium deposition was decreased by 92.88%, which is greater than their calculated additive inhibition (80.33%). These results demonstrate that the combination of Mg with selected PPs (Q, C, and R) is more effective than when used separately. The findings also suggest the combination has a synergistic effect in inhibiting VC, which is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Triclosan is a lipophilic antimicrobial agent which, when present in an aqueous dentifrice vehicle, is complexed by or in close contact with polymers and surface-active molecules, emulsifying agents, flavoring oils and other hydrophobic ingredients. Because of this, dentifrice products containing triclosan may not have triclosan in a bioavailable state and, hence, the products themselves can not be assumed to possess antimicrobial activity. In order to determine the antimicrobial effects on dental plaque of a triclosan/pyrophosphate dentifrice relative to a negative control (without triclosan or pyrophosphate), a crossover 4-day non-brushing study was conducted. Thirty-four subjects were enrolled in this randomized two-period, double-blind crossover investigation with thirty-three subjects completing all aspects. Following a baseline plaque examination and complete plaque removal at the start of the first 4-day treatment period, subjects initiated a twice-daily supervised dosing regimen, during which they rinsed with their first assigned dentifrice in slurry form while refraining from tooth-brushing and all other oral hygiene procedures. Evaluations to quantify test product effects on plaque were conducted on Day 5. After a week-long interim washout period, subjects repeated the twice daily rinsing regimen over Days 1-4 of Treatment Period 2 with their second assigned product, again with examinations on Day 5. Analysis of data demonstrated subjects had significantly (p = 0.0296) less plaque when rinsing with the triclosan/pyrophosphate dentifrice slurry as compared to the negative control dentifrice slurry; the relative treatment difference as determined by the primary examiner was 12.7%. A trainee examiner observed a 16.0% reduction on a subset of subjects (p = 0.0139). This efficacy result compares favorably with results from other studies of triclosan-containing products. The examinations for oral safety demonstrated no meaningful clinical differences between the triclosan/pyrophosphate dentifrice and control dentifrice.

Albino hairless mice (SkH:HR-1) exposed chronically to suberythemal doses of ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation display visible skin wrinkling and tumors. Topical treatment of mice with solutions of conjugated dienes (2,4-hexadien-1-ol and derivatives of it) prior to each UVB radiation exposure reduces significantly the severity of these visible alterations. Chronic suberythemal doses of ultraviolet A radiation induce skin sagging, a distinctly different visible skin alteration. The severity of skin sagging is not reduced by topical application of the conjugated dienes tested here.
