In view of ESA’s horizon goal of establishing a human presence on the Moon by 2040, the Earth’s moon is increasingly coming into the focus of research and industry. Lunar exploration can benefit from systems developed for low-Earth orbit, as the environmental conditions are overlapping. The development of the CubeSat industry in recent decades has led to a revolution in access to near-Earth space. The goal of Neurospace and its partners is to explore the similarities of both environments for a direct application of existing CubeSat technologies for lunar exploration. Using an open standard and a tiered approach for the development of lunar rovers will allow future missions to focus more on the actual use case rather than the individual development, qualification, and certification of required components. This paper introduces the HiveR rover and provides a classification of the future importance of robotic systems for lunar exploration. It also discusses, in review of past lunar missions, how such rovers differ from previous lunar rovers, and how important they can be in supporting increasingly complex missions. The similarities and differences between the low-Earth orbit and the lunar surface are outlined. Based on this, the new challenges in adapting existing CubeSat technologies for robotics on the lunar surface will be discussed and initial solutions presented. As examples of potential payloads, various experiments are presented, such as a robot arm that was developed to fit in a 1 U volume. It can be used for docking operations between individual systems or various tool handling operations.

The article discusses the importance of rehearsals to the preparation and coordination of the commander's plan. It notes that rehearsal is key to troop leading procedures (TLP) at all levels. It adds that rehearsals are designed as practice sessions to prepare for upcoming operations. It also cites the objectives of rehearsals conducted by the commander including the increase in proficiency in critical tasks and integration of the actions of subordinate elements.

We report a case of a 57-year-old woman who was diagnosed with a systemic AA amyloidosis associated with a pleomorphic sarcoma of the spleen. Although the association and causality between chronic inflammatory states and systemic AA amyloidosis have been well established, the evidence linking solid malignancies to reactive AA amyloidosis is scarce. Our patient had a significant systemic amyloid deposition including biopsy-proven renal and cardiac AA amyloidosis. Subsequent evaluation uncovered the presence of a large splenic mass, which was treated by splenectomy. Histologically the splenic tumor was classified as pleomorphic sarcoma. The removal of the tumor resulted in a marked decline in proteinuria, stable renal and cardiac functions, and symptomatic improvement at 1-year follow-up. Based on the noted improvements, we speculate that the pleomorphic sarcoma of the spleen caused secondary amyloidosis in our case. Stromal tumors, although rare, may be associated with and should be considered in the differential diagnosis of the cause of AA amyloidosis. © 2002 by the National Kidney Foundation, Inc.

Bacteriol. 92:487–495. 1966.—Thin section analysis of the chemosynthetic autotroph Thiobacillus thiooxidansrevealed structures comparable to gram-negative heterotrophic bacteria. Although this species is unique in that it oxidizes elemental sulfur for energy, uses carbon dioxide as its sole source of carbon, and can withstand a pH of less than 1, thin sections revealed a profile of the cell envelope (cell wall and plasmalemma) similar to other gram-negative species which have more common physiological traits. The cell wall is composed of five layers with an overall width of approximately 200 A, and the plasmalemma appears as a conventional “unit membrane” with a width of about 85 A. Volutin granules and less-dense bodies of similar shape and size were frequently observed in close association with the nucleoplasm. The nature and function of these bodies are unknown at this time.
