The survey of the marble fragments of the Oriental statues from the Basilica Aemilia in the Roman Forum offered an opportunity to re-examine the materials held by the Parco archeologico del Colosseo. We studied the disiecta membra of the bodies in pavonazzetto and giallo antico marble, and the nude parts made of white marble that complete the sculptures, such as the finely-crafted heads with traces of pigment and a few hands. Archaeometric analyses of the white marbles reveal the use of parian marble (Lychnites variety) for the heads and hands, and of pentelic marble for the plinths. The hundreds of fragments examined turned out to be of special interest for the study of the posture and garments of the statues. This allowed us to propose a virtual reconstruction model of the statues belonging to the architectural decorations of the Augustan period Basilica.

Nell'ambito del restauro delle pitture murali di Alesso Baldovinetti e Antonio Pollaiolo presso la Cappella del Cardinale del Portogallo in San Miniato al Monte a Firenze, da parte dello Studio Ciccone di Firenze, l'Istituto di Scienze del Patrimonio Culturale del CNR ha effettuato, su richiesta del suddetto Studio, delle indagini scientifiche aventi il fine di identificare i pigmenti costituenti la tavolozza pittorica, i leganti ed eventuali sostanze polimeriche presenti sulle superfici. Tali indagini sono state svolte sia con tecniche non invasive, che con tecniche micro-distruttive previo microcampionamento. Per accertare inoltre la presenza di attività biologica sulle superfici sono state effettuate alcune misure, totalmente non invasive, con un bioluminometro.

multi-band imaging techniques have become part of the range of analytical methodologies available in archaeological contexts, in particular ultraviolet- induced luminescence (UVL) and visible-induced luminescence (VIL). Photographic campaigns, implemented and integrated with a non-invasive or micro-invasive survey, represent a strategic tool for gaining thorough knowledge of an archaeological artefact. Specific attention is given to the study of the original polychromy on statues, in most cases reduced to tiny traces. Excavation, bad warehousing and, in some cases, excessive cleaning due to a misinterpretation of classical sculpture as totally white have led to an almost entire loss of the original polychromy. The analytical protocol here proposed, based on the combination of imaging and spot techniques, could help reveal residual traces of patterns, characteristic pigments such as red lakes and Egyptian blue and help reconstruct past restoration interventions, as demonstrated with some examples of investigations conducted in different contexts from museums to archaeological sites.

Gens Statlane's sarcophagi, are part of the Florence National Archaeological Museum collection, currently preserved in Villa Corsini in a wonderful courtyard and warehouse, close to Sesto Fiorentino; previously forming a section around Tuscania inside the "Museo Topografico dell'Etruria", which was created between the late nineteenth century and the early twentieth century. After the devastating flood of November 4, 1966, the sarcophagi were damaged and partly confused with other contexts. In 2012, collecting archive sources concerning Statlane's tombs from Tuscania and Florence, a contribution was published aiming to put together all the finds purchased by the Museum in order to rebuild the context's history. Unfortunately, part of the finds were sold at the moment of their discovery. The tombs are located outside the modern town of Tuscania, in the heart of the once "Southern-inner Etruria", in the Rosavecchia necropolis whose current location is "Polledrara Bassetta", west of the city, about 200 meters from the road linking Tuscania to Tarquinia. The structure was discovered on March 31, 1898, and immediately excavated by G. Cerasa, the official "Ispettore degli Scavi per i Comuni di Toscanella, Arlena e Cellere", who updated L. A. Milani, the Director of Florence Museum, by mail.

There are several reasons for examining sarcophagi from the Roman catacombs. First of all the micro-climatic conditions of the catacombs - especially the least visited ones - are particularly suitable for the preservation of colours: the temperature and humidity are constant and the lighting is limited to the duration of either visits or inspections. These conditions facilitate the preservation of some of the examples of polychromy on the sarcophagi. Thus detailed investigations of these works can reveal important details of the technique used by the old painters. Secondly, we focused on these types of objects for methodological reasons. Roman sarcophagi belonging to the second-forth centuries AD are sufficiently abundant, chronologically well-defined and the result of a standardized serial production from the workshops of central Italy and Rome in particular. Although scholarly knowledge is good - there are almost complete corpora and detailed museum catalogues - few examples have been subjected to systematic analyses and several unanswered questions remain. Thanks to the study of a class of materials, rather than individual works, we will rely on systematic comparisons to integrate the various observations and data collected and, consequently, to avoid overly hypothetical generalizations. The aim is to gain a better understanding of the technical approaches and traditions of the workshops and of their evolution over the centuries through a wide set of data.

As part of a collaboration between the Egyptian Museum in Florence, the University of Florence and CNR, a survey project was launched, with non-invasive methods, on the fragments from the Seti I tomb, in Florence, coming from a jamb taken by the franco-tuscan expedition in 1829. Preliminary results allowed to focus some steps of the history of this fragment, from its realization to the present.

La Conservazione del Patrimonio Culturale necessita di un approccio multidisciplinare che permetta un'efficace comprensione dei materiali costitutivi e delle problematiche di degrado del bene che sia funzionale alla sua conservazione. Caratteristica peculiare dell'istituto è la sua multidisciplinarietà, che si concretizza nelle competenze del personale distribuito sul territorio nelle tre sedi di Firenze, Roma e Milano, e dalla rete di collaborazioni nazionali e internazionali con università, enti di ricerca. pubblici e privati preposti alla tutela e alla conservazione del patrimonio. Nell'ambito della valorizzazione del patrimonio culturale, ICVBC persegue approcci di promozione integrata dei siti e monumenti nel loro contesto, promuove lo sviluppo sostenibile del turismo tramite soluzioni nel rispetto della qualità della vita e della identità dei luoghi, migliorando così la fruizione del patrimonio tangibile che intangibile.

Il lavoro presenta uno studio multi-disciplinare effettuato su alcuni dipinti italiani appartenenti alla collezione permanente del North Carolina Museum of Art (NCMA). Le indagini diagnostiche sono state eseguite dal CNR-ICVBC (Firenze, IT) in collaborazione con la Duke University (Durham, Stati Uniti) e lo Smithsonian Institution (Washington D.C., Stati Uniti). La finalità principale dell'attività era quella di definire lo stato di conservazione e di identificare i materiali originali e di restauro, consentendo parallelismi e differenze tra i dipinti e le tecniche pittoriche distintive dei diversi artisti. Il servizio ICVBC-mobile ha permesso di realizzare la campagna diagnostica multi-analitica in situ, direttamente all'interno dei locali del Museo dove i dipinti sono esposti. È stato messo a punto un programma diagnostico mirato che ha previsto inizialmente l'impiego di tecniche fotografiche di imaging (visibile (VIS), infrarosso (IR), fluorescenza indotta da ultravioletto (UVf) e infrarosso falso colore (IRFC)) in modo da evidenziare l'eventuale presenza di disegno preparatorio, avere una prima indicazione sulla tipologia di pigmenti presenti, evidenziare le aree di ritocco ed infine indirizzare la scelta dei punti di misura con le tecniche puntuali. Sono state quindi eseguite analisi con tecniche di tipo non invasivo, mediante l'impiego di strumentazione portatile. In particolare sono state applicate: i) microscopia ottica digitale portatile, ii) spettroscopia di riflettanza a fibre ottiche nella regione del visibile (FORS), iii) spettroscopia infrarossa in trasformata di Fourier (FTIR) in riflettanza totale, iv) spettroscopia di fluorescenza a raggi X (XRF). Per rispondere a quesiti ai quali le metodologie non-invasive non hanno fornito una risposta (es. stratigrafia, spessori degli strati pittorici, morfologia dei pigmenti), si è ricorsi ad un'integrazione dei risultati tramite l'analisi di micro prelievi. L'applicazione di questo protocollo ha fornito informazioni dettagliate sugli oggetti esaminati offrendo una panoramica sui dipinti e nuove informazioni in un momento importante di questa produzione artistica. Il caso studio presentato è una tempera su tavola attribuito alla Scuola pavese raffigurante la Madonna col Bambino e San Giovanni Evangelista, Sant'Antonio e il Donatore. Sul dipinto erano presenti pesanti ridipinture, in particolare sul donatore e sullo stemma di famiglia, che impedivano una corretta identificazione dei committenti del dipinto. Il mapping XRF, unitamente ai risultati delle altre indagini effettuate in situ, ha permesso di ricostruire lo stemma originale sottostante la ridipintura, senza bisogno di alcun campionamento, rispondendo in questo modo ad un dibattito che si era istaurato tra gli storici da tempo.

Mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) is a rare group of inherited lysosomal storage disorders that is associated with multiple symptoms including joint stiffness, misshapen bones, reduced hand function, frequent otitis media, "thickened" facial features, hearing problems, vision problems and heart complications. We conducted this study to determine how many (if any) children that come to pediatric rheumatology have unrecognized MPS and if routine screening for MPS is needed. A total of 9 patients (four females) who met inclusion criteria for the study (see under Methods) were enrolled and underwent testing. The average age was 12.5 years (range 7-17 years). The most common symptoms (at least experienced by 2 patients or more) included joint stiffness (n=7), headache (n=3), tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy (n=3), myringotomy tubes (n=3), hearing loss (n=3), Raynaud's (n=2), and a positive ANA (n=2). All the 9 patients tested negative for the lysosomal enzymes alpha- Iduronidase, Iduronate-2-sulfatase, Arylsulfatase B and beta- galactosidase as reported by the laboratory's reference ranges.

In the present work authors show the results obtained by means of the application of ultra closerange photogrammetry for assessing the pattern of a detached wall painting's surface during/after cleaning treatments. The cleaning treatments are critical operations in conservation so the choice of the method and the definition of the protocol require preliminary activities and studies for the optimization of the procedure. Since the removal of the material is an irreversible operation, an extremely selective method is needed. The criteria traditionally chosen for the selection of the adequate cleaning procedure are the evaluation of the amount of material removed during the treatment and the surface variations (roughness) before and after the treatment. A non-destructive technique could be particularly highlighted as an assessment tool; to this aim the authors propose the photogrammetry method in ultra close-range mode. The ultra close-range photogrammetry is a total non-invasive method, fully portable, and easy to use. The cleaning treatments studied in this work are chemical cleaning, and laser cleaning. The obtained information on the third dimension of the surface by means of ultra close-range photogrammetry was compared with results performed by 3D optical microscope (only on selected single points). The colorimetric information on selected areas during and after the cleaning completes the surviving activity. The performed tests on the case study demonstrate the ability of the proposed approach to control the effectiveness of the cleaning procedures applied on wall paintings during conservation interventions. The advantages due to the portability and to the non-destructivity of photogrammetry (no-contact measurement method) with regard to others techniques candidates, led this methodology to be used in wider restoration works.

Este artículo tiene como objetivo el estudio de los principales factores de riesgo de la hipertensión arterial, modificables por la actuación de la Estrategia Salud de la Familia. La metodología utilizada fue una revisión narrativa de literatura con recogida de datos en la base electrónica SCIELO, con los descriptores: hipertensión, factores de riesgo, equipo multiprofesional y educación en salud. El trabajo ocurrió en el período de diciembre de 2010 a febrero de 2011. Se localizaron 581 artículos sobre HAS, siendo que 11 fueron considerados para el análisis. Los resultados indican que la educación en salud en la atención básica, especialmente en la Estrategia de Salud de la Familia (ESF) constituye un instrumento de intervención importante, pues conociendo la realidad de la población que atienden, las intervenciones propuestas por el equipo multiprofesional pueden producir resultados positivos. Se observó la necesidad de valoración de nuevos conceptos de salud-enfermedad y participación del usuario de salud en la elaboración de un plan de intervención, con estímulo al abandono del consumo de tabaco y del uso abusivo de alcohol, reducción de peso entre aquellos con sobrepeso, implementación de actividades físicas, reducción del consumo de sal, aumento del consumo de hortalizas y frutas, además de la disminución en el consumo de alimentos grasos, entre otros, para estimular el auto-cuidado promoviendo una mejora en la calidad de vida de la población. Este artigo tem como objetivo o estudo dos principais fatores de risco para a hipertensão arterial. Modificáveis pela atuação da Estratégia Saúde da Família. A metodologia utilizada foi a revisão narrativa de literatura com coleta de dados na base eletrônica SCIELO, com os descritores: hipertensão, fatores de risco, equipe multiprofissional e educação em saúde, ocorreu no período de dezembro de 2010 a fevereiro de 2011. Foram localizados 581 artigos sobre HAS, sendo que 11 foram considerados para a análise. Os resultados apontam que a educação em saúde na atenção Básica, especialmente na Estratégia de Saúde da Família (ESF) constitui-se em um instrumento de intervenção importante, pois conhecendo a realidade da população que assistem, as intervenções propostas pela equipe multiprofissional podem produzir resultados positivos. Observou-se a necessidade de valorização de novos conceitos de saúde-doença e participação do usuário de saúde na elaboração do seu plano de intervenção, com estímulo à cessação do tabagismo e do uso abusivo de álcool, redução do peso entre aqueles com sobrepeso, implementação de atividades físicas, redução do consumo de sal, aumento do consumo de hortaliças e frutas, além da diminuição de alimentos gordurosos, entre outros, com o intuito de estimular o auto-cuidado promovendo uma melhoria da qualidade de vida da população. This article aims to study the main risk factors for hypertension, which are modifiable in the Family Health Strategy. The methodology used was a narrative review of literature to collect data in the electronic SCIELO containing the key words: hypertension, risk factors, multidisciplinary team and health education. Data collection occurred between December 2010 and February 2011. We found 581 articles on hypertension, and 11 were considered for analysis. The results indicate that health education in primary care, especially in the Family Health Strategy (ESF) is an important intervention tool because knowing the reality of the people who attend, the interventions proposed by the multidisciplinary team can produce positive results. There is a need for an appreciation of new concepts in health care and health user participation in preparing the plan of action, stimulating smoking cessation and alcohol abuse, weight reduction among the overweight, introduction of physical activity, reduction of salt intake, increased consumption of vegetables and fruits, besides the reduction of fatty foods, among others, in order to stimulate self-care and promote a better quality of life.

The Tomb of the Diver has been subject for many decades of fierce debate among archaeologists and classicists. Since its discovery in 1968, some scholars have considered it a unique example of the lost tradition of Greek painting, others have emphasized Etruscan or Italic parallels. More recently, a possible local production has been suggested. With the aim of trying to solve the archaeological question, an archaeometric comparison among this well-known artwork and several frescoed tombs coming from Hellenistic and Lucan necropolis was carried out. The multi-analytical study was focused on the identification of peculiar features of executive techniques and raw materials since the first period of the archaeological site. The analytical investigation has been preliminary based on a non-destructive approach, performed in-situ by portable equipment including imaging diagnostics and compositional spectroscopic techniques for identifying pigments and the conservation state of original painted surface; subsequently, a further deepening by using destructive techniques was performed in-lab for the mortar-based supports characterization. Archaeometric study suggested that technological choices slightly changed in a time span of about two centuries, highlighting important markers that allow clustering the contemporary artistic productions. Moreover, a comparison with mortars from temples decorations was provided to better understand the whole artistic context. The archaeometric data showed that the Tomb of the Diver could be traced back to a local artisanal tradition and therefore is neither Etruscan nor Greek, but the first and foremost an expression of the local elite culture of Paestum.

Thirty artefacts from the Archaeological Park of Paestum were investigated by means of scientific techniques on the occasion of the 2016 exhibition 'Possessione. Trafugamenti e falsi di antichita a Paestum'. The multi-analytic diagnostic campaign was aimed at identifying forgeries. Results provided a deeper understanding of both ancient technology and contemporary forgery techniques.

This paper presents the results obtained for the mural paintings (XV century CE) in the church of San Panfilo in Villagrande di Tornimparte (AQ, Italy) by means of noninvasive spectroscopic techniques; this research is a part of the project on the Saturnino Gatti pictorial cycle, promoted and coordinated by the AIAr (the Italian Archaeometry Association). Digital optical microscopy (OM), X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF), fiber optics reflectance spectroscopy in the UV–Vis–NIR range (FORS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy in the external reflection mode (ER-FTIR), and Raman spectroscopy were performed on the points selected based on the image analysis results and the few available records on previous intervention, with the aim of characterizing both the original and restoration organic and inorganic materials. The synergic application of complementary techniques allowed us to obtain a complete picture of the palette and the main alteration products and organic substances (of rather ubiquitous lipid materials and less widespread resin and proteinaceous materials in specific points). The identification of modern compounds permitted the individuation of restoration areas; this was confirmed by the comparison with multiband imaging results, as in the case of specific green and blue pigments, strictly related to the presence of high signals of zinc. This analytical protocol left only very few ambiguities and allowed to minimizing the number of samples taken to clarifying, by sample laboratory analyses, the few doubts still open.
