Identifying the stable surface phases under a given electrochemical conditions serves as the basis for studying the atomistic mechanism of reactions at solid/water interfaces. In this work, we systematically compare the performance of the two main approaches that are used to capture the impact of an aqueous environment, implicit and explicit solvent, on surface energies and phase diagrams. As a model system, we consider the magnesium/water interface with (i) Ca substitution and (ii) proton and hydroxyl adsorption. We show that while the implicit solvent model is computationally very efficient, it suffers from two shortcomings. First, the choice of the implicit solvent parameters significantly influences the energy landscape in the vicinity of the surface. The default parameters benchmarked on solvation in water underestimate the energy of the dissolved Mg ion and lead to spontaneous dissolution of the surface atom, resulting in large differences in the surface energetics. Second, in systems containing a charged surface and a solvated ion, the implicit solvent model may not converge to the energetically stable ionic charge state but remain in a high-energy metastable configuration, representing the neutral charge state of the ion. When these two issues are addressed, surface phase diagrams that closely match the explicit water results can be obtained. We used photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy and first-principles calculations to investigate GaN doped with Mg, Be, and implanted with Ca. The PL spectra revealed distinct red emission bands (RLA, where A = Be, Mg, and Ca) with maxima between 1.68 and 1.82 eV, each associated with a specific impurity. These bands consistently appeared alongside the green GL2 PL band at 2.33 eV, attributed to nitrogen vacancy (VN). Our calculations suggest that these bands result from recombination via defect complexes of group-II acceptors substituting for Ga with VN (AGaVN, A = Be, Mg, and Ca). The experimental + / 0 transition levels for these complexes were estimated to be 0.6, 0.8, and 1.0 eV above the valence band maximum for Mg-, Be-, and Ca-containing complexes, respectively. The radiative recombination is facilitated by excited donor states located close to the conduction band minimum. Furthermore, our theory predicts that ZnGaVN and CdGaVN are stable and possess similar properties, although, no PL was detected from these defect complexes. The NLRP3 inflammasome is an essential component of the innate immune system, but excessive activation can lead to inflammatory diseases. Ion fluxes across the plasma membrane or from intracellular stores are known to regulate NLRP3 inflammasome activation. Deep-sea water (DSW) contains high concentrations of many mineral ions, which could potentially influence NLRP3 inflammasome activation. However, the impact of DSW on NLRP3 inflammasome activation has not been investigated. Here, we demonstrated that DSW with water hardness levels up to 500 mg/L did not affect cell viability or the expression of NLRP3 inflammasome components in macrophages derived from THP-1 cells. However, the DSW significantly inhibited IL-1β secretion and caspase-1 activation in response to NLRP3 activators such as nigericin, ATP, or monosodium urate (MSU) crystals. Mechanically, it was discovered that the presence of 5 mM magnesium ions (Mg2+), equivalent to the Mg2+ concentration found in the DSW with a water hardness of 500 mg/L, inhibits NLRP3 inflammasome activation. This indicates that Mg2+ contributes to the mechanism by which DSW mitigates NLRP3 inflammasome activation. Moreover, DSW administration effectively lessens MSU-triggered peritonitis in mice, a commonly used model for examining the impacts of NLRP3 inflammasome activation. These results show that DSW enriched with Mg2+ could potentially be beneficial in modulating NLRP3 inflammasome-associated diseases.

The effect of replacing magnesia by alumina on the pressure-dependent structure of amorphous enstatite was investigated by applying in situ high-pressure neutron diffraction with magnesium isotope substitution to glassy (MgO)0.375(Al2O3)0.125(SiO2)0.5. The replacement leads to a factor of 2.4 increase in the rate-of-change of the Mg–O coordination number with pressure, which increases from 4.76(4) at ambient pressure to 6.51(4) at 8.2 GPa, and accompanies a larger probability of magnesium finding bridging oxygen atoms as nearest-neighbors. The Al–O coordination number increases from 4.17(7) to 5.24(8) over the same pressure interval at a rate that increases when the pressure is above ∼3.5 GPa. On recovering the glass to ambient conditions, the Mg–O and Al–O coordination numbers reduce to 5.32(4) and 4.42(6), respectively. The Al–O value is in accordance with the results from solid-state 27Al nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, which show the presence of six-coordinated aluminum species that are absent in the uncompressed material. These findings explain the appearance of distinct pressure-dependent structural transformation regimes in the preparation of permanently densified magnesium aluminosilicate glasses. They also indicate an anomalous minimum in the pressure dependence of the bulk modulus with an onset that suggests a pressure-dependent threshold for transitioning between scratch-resistant and crack-resistant material properties. BACKGROUND: Refeeding syndrome is the gravest possible medical complication in malnourished patients undergoing refeeding in the hospital. We previously reported that males with malnutrition secondary to eating disorders required more calories and had longer hospital stays than females; however, sex differences in electrolyte abnormalities indicating refeeding syndrome risk remain unknown. The objective of this study was to assess differences in electrolyte abnormalities indicating refeeding syndrome risk among male and female adolescents and young adults with eating disorders hospitalized for medical instability. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the electronic medical records of 558 patients aged 9-25 years admitted to the University of California, San Francisco Eating Disorders Program for medical instability between May 2012 and August 2020. Nanoscale magnesium clusters are important potential hydrogen storage materials, and density functional theory (DFT) is mainly used for their theoretical investigation. The results of the coupled-cluster theory at the singles and doubles level with a perturbative treatment of triples [CCSD(T)] were employed previously to choose proper exchange–correlation (XC) functionals in DFT calculations for magnesium clusters, but it is too expensive to be applied to Mgn with n > 7. The diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) method is employed in this work to study magnesium clusters up to nanosize. The error of atomization energies with DMC using single-determinant-Jastrow (SDJ) trial wavefunctions has been shown to be somewhat larger than that of CCSD(T) for many molecules. However, cohesive energies with DMC using SDJ for Mgn with n ≤ 7 are in excellent agreement with those of CCSD(T) using the aug-cc-pVQZ basis set, with a difference of less than 1 kcal/mol. DMC results are employed to investigate the performance of different XC functionals on magnesium clusters. Our results indicate that the PBE0 functional is the best XC functional for determining the lowest-energy isomer when compared with DMC results, while the RPBE functional is the best XC functional for calculating cohesive energies per atom of these magnesium clusters with a mean absolute error of 0.5 kcal/mol. Cholera is a global health problem with no targeted therapies. The Ca2+-sensing receptor (CaSR) is a regulator of intestinal ion transport and a therapeutic target for diarrhea, and Ca2+ is considered its main agonist. We found that increasing extracellular Ca2+ had a minimal effect on forskolin-induced Cl- secretion in human intestinal epithelial T84 cells. However, extracellular Mg2+, an often-neglected CaSR agonist, suppressed forskolin-induced Cl- secretion in T84 cells by 65% at physiological levels seen in stool (10 mM). The effect of Mg2+ occurred via the CaSR/Gq signaling that led to cAMP hydrolysis. Mg2+ (10 mM) also suppressed Cl- secretion induced by cholera toxin, heat-stable E. coli enterotoxin, and vasoactive intestinal peptide by 50%. In mouse intestinal closed loops, luminal Mg2+ treatment (20 mM) inhibited cholera toxin-induced fluid accumulation by 40%. In a mouse intestinal perfusion model of cholera, addition of 10 mM Mg2+ to the perfusate reversed net fluid transport from secretion to absorption. These results suggest that Mg2+ is the key CaSR activator in mouse and human intestinal epithelia at physiological levels in stool. Since stool Mg2+ concentrations in patients with cholera are essentially zero, oral Mg2+ supplementation, alone or in an oral rehydration solution, could be a potential therapy for cholera and other cyclic nucleotide-mediated secretory diarrheas.

Planar hexacoordination (ph) is only rarely reported in the literature. So far, only a few neutral and cationic molecules possessing phE (E = C, Si, B, Al, Ga) in the most stable isomer are predicted theoretically. Present electronic structure calculations report hitherto unknown anionic planar hexcoordinate beryllium and magnesium, phBe/Mg, as the most stable isomer. Global minimum searches show that the lowest energy structure of BeC6M3− (M = Al, Ga) and MgC6M3− (M = Ga, In, Tl) is the D3h symmetric phBe/Mg clusters, where beryllium/magnesium is covalently bonded with six carbon centers and M is located in a bridging position between two carbon centers. These global minimum phBe/Mg clusters are highly kinetically stable against isomerization, facilitating the experimental confirmation by photoelectron spectroscopy. Noteworthy is the fact that the phBe/Mg center is linked with carbon centers through three 7c–2e delocalized σ bonds and three 7c–2e π bonds, making the cluster double aromatic (σ + π) in nature. The bonding between the Be/Mg and outer ring moiety can be best expressed as an electron-sharing σ-bond between the s orbital of Be+/Mg+ and C6M32− followed by three dative interactions involving empty pπ and two in-plane p orbitals of Be/Mg. Furthermore, Lewis basic M centers of the title clusters can be passivated through the complexation with bulky Lewis acid, 9-boratriptycene, lowering the overall reactivity of the cluster, which can eventually open up the possibility of their large-scale syntheses. Here, we investigate the effects of O2:N2 (1:1) as ambient gas as compared with pure N2 during activation annealing of Mg as p-type doping in GaN layers grown by MOCVD. The purpose is to understand the impact of O2 on the resulting free hole concentration and hole mobility using SIMS, XRD, STEM, AFM, and Hall effect measurements. Even though the presence of O2 in the ambient gas during annealing is very effective in reducing the H level of the Mg-doped GaN layers, the maximum achievable hole concentration and mobility is still higher with pure N2. The differences are explained by an in-diffusion of O to the GaN layer acting as n-dopant and, thus, giving rise to a compensation effect. The Mg–H complexes at substitutional (MgGa), i.e., the electrically active acceptor sites that provide free holes, are preferentially activated by annealing with N2 only as ambient gas, while annealing with O2:N2 (1:1) also dissociates electrically inactive Mg–H complexes resulting in much less residual H. At the lower growth pressure of 150 mbar compared to higher growth pressure of 300 mbar, an increasing carbon incorporation leads to a compensation effect drastically reducing the free hole concentration while the mobility is unaffected. Hydrogen is hailed as a game-changer in global energy systems, offering a sustainable remedy to climate change through its zero waste attributes, beneficial for both power generation and transportation. However, conventional thermochemical methods for hydrogen production, such as steam methane reforming and coal gasification, result in low-quality impure hydrogen, necessitating costly purification processes. Therefore, expediting the advancement of pure hydrogen production methods with minimal to no purification requirements is essential to bolster economic viability and foster widespread adoption across industries. Among these methods, electrolysis and hydrolysis have garnered significant attention in research over the past two decades. However, there is a lack of literature review discussing both electrolysis and hydrolysis for pure hydrogen production within a single article. Hence, this review seeks to fill this gap by providing an overview of pure hydrogen production through electrolysis and hydrolysis. It commences with the classification of different pure hydrogen production methods, followed by a discussion on water electrolysis and other variants of electrolysis, as well as hydrolysis involving light metal-based composites, alloys, and lightweight hydrides. A comparison between electrolysis and hydrolysis for pure hydrogen production is also outlined and discussed, along with an outlook on their future prospects. Magnesium containing high entropy alloys have gained attention recently as a potential material for hydrogen storage applications. In this work, five non-equiatomic compositions of MgTiZrNiAl HEAs were synthesized using a high-energy ball milling technique and electrochemically characterized for hydrogen storage performance. The concentrations of Mg and other constituent alloying elements are critical to achieving good storage capacity and other hydrogen storage properties. Interestingly, higher Mg atomic percent (40–50 at%) in the HEA matrix showed high gravimetric capacity, and increasing the constituent element like Ni has significantly enhanced the overall storage capacity, kinetics, and thermodynamic properties. Overall, 1 wt% of hydrogen was electrochemically stored with high reversibility, improved hydrogen diffusion coefficient, and anticorrosion ability. In this work, research was carried out to assess the possibility of producing rods from magnesium ingots and to study their structure and properties under various geometric and technological parameters of the combined rolling-extrusion (CRE) process. The values of the energy-power parameters of the process were determined. Data were obtained on the forces acting on the rolls and on the die, as well as torques on the rolls with a closed box gauge. The patterns of their changes have been established depending on the heating temperature of the workpiece, drawing ratio during extrusion and various sizes of calibers used on the existing combined processing units CRE-200 and CRE-400. Tools and equipment were selected to carry out experimental research by determining the required power of the drive electric motors of these units. A model has been designed to simulate the CRE process for producing Mg rods of a given chemical composition. Calculation of energy-force parameters using the model using the calculated processing mode showed that the obtained values of forces and moments during the implementation of the CRE process correlate with the results obtained during its analytical assessment. Corresponding experimental studies showed the adequacy of the model and analytical calculations. Pilot batches of rods with a diameter of 5 and 9 mm from cast magnesium ingots are produced. The physical and mechanical properties and structure of the resulting semi-finished products were investigated. Recommendations were given on the choice of metal processing temperature to reduce the size of recrystallized grains obtained at relatively large strain. Based on the research results, it was concluded that it is possible to obtain high-quality deformed semi-finished products from cast magnesium billets with a high level of strength properties and sufficient plastic properties. Hydroxyapatite and β-tricalcium phosphate are the most popular calcium phosphates used for bone tissue regeneration and in the manufacture of prostheses for bone replacement. Incorporation of different ions in low concentrations into the crystal lattice of calcium phosphates allows enhancing or modifying their properties. In this work, stoichiometric hydroxyapatite, calcium deficient hydroxyapatite and β-tricalcium phosphate co-substituted with zinc, magnesium, and silicate were synthesized using a mechanochemical approach. The compositions of the materials were investigated by powder X-ray diffraction, FTIR spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The materials prepared were assessed for dissolution in water and implanted into rat skull bones. For the first time, it was demonstrated that the substituted calcium-deficient hydroxyapatite has an increased solubility in water compared with β-tricalcium phosphate and hydroxyapatite. In vivo studies revealed that the calcium-deficient hydroxyapatite promotes better osteogenesis than other calcium phosphates investigated here, showing almost complete remodeling of the damaged bone tissue already after 5 months. In this regard, calcium-deficient hydroxyapatite with zinc, magnesium, and silicate substitution is the most promising material for bone tissue regeneration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Commonly used brine-based completion fluids are calcium chloride, sodium chloride, and potassium chloride. Our main objective for this study is to overcome the rheological performance and density limitations of existing brine-based completion fluid for workover and completion in oil and gas reservoirs. Magnesium Bromide-based completion fluid exhibits a high-density 13.41-lb/gal, with a specific gravity of 1.61. Existing, calcium chloride, potassium chloride, and sodium chloride-based completion fluid exhibit a density of 11.64-lb/gal (specific gravity 1.39), 9.6-lb/gal, (specific gravity 1.15), and 10.02-lb/gal (specific gravity 1.20), respectively. Results suggest that a high-density and solid-free novel magnesium bromide-based completion fluid show suitable optimum rheology avoid formation damage, plugging, and eroding of tubular and completion equipment. In this study, we have investigated the rheological properties such as apparent viscosity, plastic viscosity, yield point, and gel strength 10 sec and 10 min of formulated completion fluid at the varying temperature of 84 °F (28.8 °C) to 192 °F (88.8 °C). We have found that magnesium bromide-based completion fluid shows lower apparent viscosity and plastic viscosity as compared to calcium chloride-based completion fluid. In this work, we reported that the well‐defined Mg‐Ni‐Mg complex [(LMg)2Ni(C2H4)2] {L = [(DippNCMe)2CH]−, Dipp = 2,6‐iPr2C6H3} was capable of catalyzing the conversion of a diverse array of terminal alkenes to hydrosilylated products in anti‐Markovnikov fashion using PhSiH3 as the silicon source. The stoichiometric reaction of heterometallic Mg‐Ni‐Mg complex with one equivalent PhSiH3 obtained a silyl‐nickel‐monohydride complex [(LMg)2NiH(C2H4)(SiHPhEt)] featuring a Ni‐Si‐H‐Mg interaction. Moreover, treatment of heterometallic Mg‐Ni‐Mg complex with three equivalents PhSiH3 provided the silyl‐nickel‐trihydride complex [(LMg)2NiH3(SiHPhEt)] with three hydride‐bridged at Mg‐Ni‐Mg fragment. Further reactions of the resultant silyl‐nickel complexes with alkenes, e.g., ethylene and styrene, yielded the corresponding alkene‐coordinated Mg‐Ni‐Mg complexes [(LMg)2Ni(C2H4)2], [(LMg)2NiH2(C2H4)] and [(LMg)2NiH2(CH2CHPh)], respectively, with the elimination of PhEtSiH2. Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a relatively common neurodevelopmental mental disorder affecting an estimated 7.2% of children and adolescents, and 2.5% of adults. It manifests primarily through inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. Multimodal treatment approaches are recommended, addressing the psychological, behavioral, vocational, and educational needs of patients and their families. Conventional therapies include pharmacologic interventions (e.g., psychostimulants) and non-pharmacologic strategies (e.g., psychotherapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy). The ongoing search for novel treatment options focuses on improving cognitive function, psychological well-being, and ADHD symptomatology. Nutritional interventions with vitamins and minerals are emerging as potential complementary or adjunctive therapies. This review summarizes recent literature (past 5 years) on the relationship between magnesium and ADHD, encompassing observational studies, interventional trials, and meta- analyses. Evidence from recent publications suggests that children with ADHD have reduced magnesium levels and that magnesium supplementation improves symptoms. However, these studies do not definitively establish the exact cause-and-effect relationship between magnesium and ADHD. Current data are insufficient to recommend magnesium for routine ADHD treatment. High-quality, large-scale, and long-term studies are necessary to definitively understand the magnesium-ADHD link and to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of magnesium supplementation as an adjunct therapy. Aluminum and magnesium were welded by friction stir welding while Zinc was used as interlayer and Titanium carbide nanoparticles were applied as reinforcement. The microstructure examination and phase constitution of interfacial zones showed that the base materials reaction successfully proceeded. The changes in heat input and stir action had a very significant effect on microstructural development, the distribution of nanoparticles, wettability at the interface, and intermetallic compound formation (Al3Mg2 and Al12Mg17). Aluminum solid solution, MgZn2, Magnesium/Aluminum/Zinc Intermetallic Compounds and Magnesium were the much important Compounds in the nugget zone. The best joint with the highest tensile strength and elongation percentage of 182 MPa and 1.5%, respectively, was made at transverse speed of 45 mm/min and rotation speed of 750 rpm with presence of Titanium carbide particles and Zinc interlayer material. Magnesium-enriched hydroxyapatite was synthesized and integrated with chitosan, forming a bio-compatible biocomposite (CH/Mg·HAP) to be applied as a carrier of oxaliplatin (OXN) with enhanced loading, release, and therapeutic activities. The developed CH/Mg·HAP displayed better loading (234.8 mg g−1) behavior as compared to the single phase of Mg·HAP (148.9 mg g−1). Based on steric analysis and advanced equilibrium modeling, the integration of chitosan enhanced the existence of loading sites up to 88.3 mg g−1 as compared to the existing loading receptors throughout Mg·HAP (69.4 mg g−1). This validates the impact of the integrated chemical groups and enhanced surface area. Additionally, the hybridizing reactions considerably affected the loading capacity of each receptor (n = 2.66 for CH/Mg·HAP and 2.15 for Mg·HAP). This also determined the orientation of the loaded OXN ions in a vertically oriented configuration that involves various types of multi-molecular processes. The energetic parameters, including loading energy (<40 KJ mol−1), suggested the dominant mechanistic impact of the physical processes (hydrogen binding and van der Waals forces). The composite also displays conterminous and regulated release patterns that extend for about 160 h at pH 5.5 and 200 h at pH 7.4. The kinetic modeling of the release activities, in addition to the obtained diffusion exponent (>0.45), indicated that erosion and diffusion reactions interact to control the releasing pathways. The unloaded CH/Mg·HAP exhibits considerable cytotoxicity against HCT-116 cancerous cells (17.8% cell viability) and its OXN-loaded sample exhibits significantly enhanced cytotoxicity (0.87% cell viability). Recent studies investigated the hydrolysis of Magnesium (Mg) thin films, highlighting their potential use in biodegradable devices. Quantitatively monitoring the degradation rate and morphological changes of Mg through optical methods and light‐delivery devices offers an innovative, contactless technique, independent of electrical wiring. This method is particularly useful for challenging sensing applications. This study introduces a set of strategies based on Mg optrodes where hydrolysis drives the real‐time monitoring of biofluid penetration through thin‐film encapsulations for bioelectronics. This enables a straightforward assessment of their long‐term reliability, through a quantitative correlation between the water transmission rate (WTR) of the encapsulation and the Mg optical modifications. The optical response of the corroding Mg films deposited on glass substrates and multimode optical fibers tips, within the visible spectrum is characterized. Finally, it is demonstrated that nanopatterning of Mg films as plasmonic nanoantennas significantly enhances the sensitivity of the quantitative approach in the mid‐Infrared spectrum through localized plasmon effects. This method achieves a WTR detection of 6.9 × 10−3 gm−2 day−1 in phosphate buffer solution (25 °C), with a theoretical lower detection limit of ≈10−5 gm−2 day−1. Organic‐chemical literature encompasses large numbers of catalysts and reactions they can effect. Many of these examples are published merely to document the catalysts' scope but do not necessarily guarantee that a given catalyst is "optimal"—in terms of yield or enantiomeric excess—for a particular reaction. This paper describes a Machine Learning model that aims to improve such catalyst‐reaction assignments based on the carefully curated literature data. As we show here for the case of asymmetric magnesium catalysis, this model achieves relatively high accuracy and offers out of‐the‐box predictions successfully validated by experiment, e.g. in synthetically demanding asymmetric reductions or Michael additions. Magnesium metal batteries (MMBs), recognized as promising contenders for post‐lithium battery technologies, face challenges such as uneven magnesium (Mg) plating and stripping behaviors, leading to uncontrollable dendrite growth and irreversible structural damage. Herein, we have developed a Mg foil featuring prominently exposed (002) facets and an architecture of nanosheet arrays (termed (002)‐Mg), created through a one‐step acid etching method. Specifically, the prominent exposure of Mg (002) facets, known for their inherently low surface and adsorption energies with Mg atoms, not only facilitates smooth nucleation and dense deposition but also significantly mitigates side reactions on the Mg anode. Moreover, the nanosheet arrays on the surface evenly distribute the electric field and Mg ion flux, enhancing Mg ion transfer kinetics. As a result, the fabricated (002)‐Mg electrodes exhibit unprecedented long‐cycle performance, lasting over 6000 h (>8 months) at a current density of 3 mA cm−2 for a capacity of 3 mAh cm−2. Furthermore, the corresponding pouch cells equipped with various electrolytes and cathodes demonstrate remarkable capacity and cycling stability, highlighting the superior electrochemical compatibility of the (002)‐Mg electrode. Following on from our pilot studies, this study aimed to test the efficacy of a combination of probiotics (Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium bifidum, Streptococcus thermophilus), magnesium orotate and coenzyme 10 for the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD) through a double-blind placebo controlled clinical trial. The participants were 120 adults diagnosed with MDD randomised to daily oral administration, over 8 weeks, of either the intervention or placebo, with a 16-week follow-up period. Intent-to-treat analysis found a significantly lower frequency of the presence of a major depressive episode in the intervention group compared with placebo at the end of the 8-week treatment phase, with no difference between the two conditions at 8-week follow-up. Both the categorical and continuous measure of depressive symptoms showed a significant difference between the two conditions at 4 weeks, but not 8 and 16 weeks. The secondary end-point was demonstrated with an overall reduction in self-rated symptoms of anxiety and stress in the active treatment group compared with placebo. Magnesium borate whiskers were used to prepare a hierarchical microstructure on cordierite ceramic substrate through the precipitation-molten salt method. The La 2-X Ce X Zr 2 O 7 catalyst was then loaded onto the magnesium borate whiskers to form the hierarchical microstructure. The Ce-doped catalysts exhibited a significant improvement in the catalytic activity of soot combustion compared to the La 2 Zr 2 O 7 catalyst. The study employed various techniques to characterize the structural morphology and phase composition, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The growth of Magnesium borate whiskers (Mg 2 B 2 O 5) with diameters of 100–200 nm and lengths of 2–5 μm were grown and tightly bonded to the cordierite ceramic substrate to mimic the structure of human respiratory system cilia. This could improve the filtration efficiency of soot in car exhaust. BET analysis showed that the specific surface area of cordierite increased from 0.684 m2/g to 1.363 m2/g after whisker growth. The study confirmed that the whiskers were firmly attached to the cordierite ceramic substrate, as demonstrated by the binding strength experiments. The addition of Ce metal has been found to significantly enhance soot combustion due to the presence of more active oxygen species and superior mobility of lattice oxygen species with more oxygen vacancies. The catalyst's intrinsic redox property was characterized using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and H 2 temperature-programmed reduction (H 2 -TPR). The semi-quantitative thermogravimetric analysis (TG-DTG) and the temperature-programmed oxidation (TPO) of catalysts showed that Z-La 1.9 Ce 0 · 1 Zr 2 O 7 exhibited the highest catalytic activity for soot combustion, with an ignition temperature of 268 °C, a peak temperature of 418 °C, and a temperature of 90 % soot conversion of 464 °C. Furthermore, cyclic stability experiments demonstrate that the Z-La 1.9 Ce 0 · 1 Zr 2 O 7 catalyst exhibits excellent structural stability and consistent catalytic performance. Aluminum and magnesium are the lightest structural metals, and therefore, various alloys based on them are widely used in both, automotive and aerospace industries. However, aluminum and magnesium are very easily affected by atmospheric and aqueous corrosion, and, therefore, the alloying elements should enhance their corrosion stability. In this work, the thermodynamic analysis of phase and chemical equilibria involving aluminum and magnesium alloys doped with silicon in oxygen–containing air environments, as well as the analysis of chemical and electrochemical equilibria involving these alloys in aqueous environments is conducted. The phase and chemical equiliibria in the Al–Mg, Al–Si, Mg–Si, and Al–Mg–Si systems at 298 K are considered, and the thermodynamic activities of the components of common Al–Mg–Si system alloys are calculated. The invariant chemical equilibria in the systems Al–Mg–O, Al–Si–O, Mg–Si–O at 298 K are considered, the isothermal section of the state diagrams of these systems are plotted, and the oxidation scheme of the Al–Mg–Si system alloys in excess oxygen is proposed. The chemical and electrochemical equilibria in the Al–Mg–Si–H2O system at 298 K are considered and presented in form of the activity – pH and the potential – pH diagrams, and the oxidation of the Al–Mg–Si system alloys in aqueous environments is discussed. Background: Pediatric palliative care (PPC) patients are at an elevated risk of malnutrition. Nutritional inadequacy can also cause micronutrient deficiencies. These factors can lead to weight loss, stunted growth, and poor quality of life. Despite the prevalence of these issues, limited research exists in the micronutrient status of PPC patients. The purpose of this study was to determine the vitamin B12 and D, iron, ferritin, folate, calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium levels of PPC patients to contribute to a better understanding of their micronutrient needs as well as the appropriate management of diet and treatment approaches. Methods: This was a single-center observational cross-sectional retrospective study. This study evaluated the levels of vitamin B12, 25-hydroxyvitamin D, iron, ferritin, folate, calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium in PPC patients. The patients were classified according to the Chronic Complex Conditions (CCC) v2 and then compared. Results: A total of 3,144 micronutrient data points were collected from 822 hospitalizations of 364 patients. At least one micronutrient deficiency was identified in 96.9% of the patients. The most prevalent deficiencies were observed for iron, calcium, and phosphate. In addition, 25-hydroxyvitamin D deficiency was observed in one-third of patients. Calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, folate, and 25-hydroxyvitamin D were negatively correlated with age. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that micronutrient deficiencies are highly prevalent in PPC patients. Butyl octyl magnesium solutions are important raw materials in various chemical processes but suffer from their high reactivity with even traces of water, protic solvents or oxygen and an increased viscosity in hydrocarbon solution due to the formation of polymeric structures. N1,N2-diphenylacenaphthylene-1,2-diimines (BIANs) have already been identified as potential candidates to reduce the viscosity of alkyl magnesium solutions and this study provides a systematic insight into the dependence of this ability on the position and structures of substituents on the BIAN. Besides the various BIANs, ZnCl2 complexes and hydrogenated derivatives were characterized and tested for their ability to reduce the viscosity. HPLC-high resolution mass spectrometry, MALDI-ToF mass spectrometry, but most important FTIR and NMR experiments under inert conditions have been used to shine light on the interaction of the different BIAN derivatives with alkyl magnesium solutions. Hydrogenated BIANs, especially those with bulky alkyl groups in the ortho position(s) have been identified as the most promising candidates. An additional benefit of the hydrogenated species is that in contrast to BIANs and BIAN-Zn complexes they do not undergo permanent chemical modification and can be reused after extraction. Traditional chemotherapy drugs for cervical cancer often cause significant toxic side effects and drug resistance problems, highlighting the urgent need for more innovative and effective treatment strategies. Magnesium alloy is known to be degradable and biocompatible. The release of degradation products Mg2+, OH−, and H2 from magnesium alloy can alter the tumor microenvironment, providing potential anti-tumor properties. We explored the innovative use of magnesium alloy biomaterials in the treatment of cervical cancer, investigating how various concentrations of Mg2+ on the proliferation and cell death of cervical cancer cells. The results revealed that varying concentrations of Mg2+ significantly inhibited cervical cancer by arresting the cell cycle in the G0/G1 phase and inducing apoptosis in SiHa cells, effectively reducing tumor cell proliferation. In vivo experiments demonstrated that 20 mM Mg2+ group had the smallest tumor volume, exhibiting a potent inhibitory effect on the biological characteristics of cervical cancer. This enhances the therapeutic potential of this biomaterial as a local anti-tumor therapy and lays a theoretical foundation for the potential application of magnesium in the treatment of cervical cancer. The study was conducted on 70 blood samples, which were divided into two parts: • Patient group: 35 samples were from patients with polycystic ovary syndrome. • Control group (healthy women): 35 samples were from healthy women (as a control group). The ages of both groups ranged between (18-45) years for the period from 4/1/2024 - 6/1/2024. From Samarra General Hospital in Salah al-Din Governorate, blood was then collected from patients and healthy people and separated using a centrifuge. Then biochemical variables were measured, which included (glucose, LH, FSH, iron, magnesium, and vitamin D). The results of the current research showed a significant increase in each of the levels (glucose, LH, iron, and magnesium). In the blood serum of patients with polycystic ovary syndrome compared with the control group, there was a significant decrease in the level of (Vit D, FSH) in both groups at its level, probability P ≤ 0.001. Background: Subarachnoid blockade is a safe, reliable, and inexpensive technique that provides surgical anesthesia along with prolonged post-operative analgesia. The quality of subarachnoid block is enhanced by the addition of intrathecal adjuvants, such as fentanyl citrate and magnesium sulfate to hyperbaric levobupivacaine. Aims and Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare the effects of fentanyl and magnesium sulfate as adjuvants to 0.5% hyperbaric levobupivacaine in orthopedic surgeries under subarachnoid block. Materials and Methods: This prospective randomized study included 90 American Society of Anesthesiologists Grade I and II patients aged 18-60 years undergoing orthopedic surgeries. Group LS received 3 mL 0.5% levobupivacaine heavy+0.5 mL normal saline. Group LF received 3 mL 0.5% levobupivacaine heavy+fentanyl 25 µg, and Group LM, 3 mL 0.5% levobupivacaine heavy+magnesium sulphate 50 mg+0.4 mL normal saline. The onset and duration of sensory and motor block and intraoperative hemodynamics were recorded. In the post-operative period, duration of analgesia, Visual Analog Scales scores, and side effects were observed. Results: The onset of sensory block was 4.04±0.74 min in Group LM (P<0.001) as compared to Groups LF (2.01±0.23 min) and LS (2±0.24 min). The onset of motor blockade took 5±1.14 min in the control group, 7.01±0.94 in group LF, and 8.11±1.33 min in group LM (P<0.001). The duration of analgesia in group LS was 183.73±12.08 min, 317±18.6 min in group LF, and 219.43±20.89 in group LM (P<0.001). Conclusion: The addition of fentanyl and magnesium as adjuvants enhanced the quality of subarachnoid block when added to hyperbaric levobupivacaine. Magnesium-air batteries, characterized by high theoretical capacity and reduced flammability risks, have garnered significance due to their potential of high energy density (700 Wh/kg). Magnesium-air batteries also offer compelling prospects due to their abundance and environmentally friendly resource. Meanwhile, zinc air batteries having energy density (1087 Wh/kg), low cost, abundant material availability, and impressive cycle life offer an attractive solution for grid-scale energy storage. Additionally, iron-air batteries have emerged as eco-friendly options with energy efficiency of 50%, harnessing iron's abundance and oxygen from the air. Objective: Diabetic nephropathy is a prevalent cause of chronic kidney disease worldwide. Magnesium plays a critical role in insulin resistance, and insulin, in turn, regulates magnesium levels. We aimed to investigate the association between hypomagnesemia and albuminuria in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Design, Patients and Measurements: This retrospective single‐centre study encompassed 1178 patients aged 18 and above with T2DM, who attended our outpatient clinic between January 2019 and August 2020. Albuminuria levels were categorised according to Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative guidelines. In the literature, when examining cut‐off values for hypomagnesemia, it is observed that studies typically use hospital normal level as a reference point. Hypomagnesemia, defined as magnesium levels below 1.6 mg/dL, was compared to normomagnesemia (magnesium between 1.6 and 2.4 mg/dL). The primary objective was to explore the impact of magnesium levels on albuminuria, while the secondary objective was to determine the prevalence of hypomagnesemia. The multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed according to age, gender (male), HbA1c, and presence of hypomagnesemia. Results: The mean age of the participants was 58.7 ± 12.2 years, with 44% being male. Hypomagnesemia was identified in 5.3% of the patients. Advanced age and female gender were more common among patients with hypomagnesemia (p =.001). Magnesium levels exhibited a negative correlation with HbA1c and fasting blood glucose, and a positive correlation with creatinine levels (r = −.117, r = −.131, r =.117, p <.001 for all three variables). Hypomagnesemia was significantly more prevalent in patients with albuminuria (15.9% vs. 4.7%, p <.001). Moreover, participants with the presence of hypomagnesemia were independently associated with a higher risk of albuminuria (odds ratio 3,64 1.76–7.52, p =.001). Magnesium dichloride (MgCl2)-supported titanium catalyst with diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP) and 3,5-di-isopropyl 1,2-phenylene diethyl dicarbonate (CD1, non-phthalate) internal donor was synthesized using magnesium alkoxide precursor. Additionally, a catalyst without the internal donor was prepared for comparative analysis. The synthesized catalysts were characterized and compared with respect to composition, surface area, particle size and morphology. The effect of CD1-based magnesium dichloride-supported Z–N catalyst was investigated for propylene polymerization and compared with DIBP-based and without internal donor Z–N catalyst system. The catalyst system with the CD1 internal donor demonstrated a higher MFI in the resultant polypropylene, suggesting a superior hydrogen response during propylene polymerization compared to both the DIBP-based and the donor-free catalyst systems. The molecular weight of the polymer was studied through gel permeable chromatography and compared for all catalyst system. The scanning electron microscope image of the polymer resin indicates spherical morphology and exact replication of catalyst. Protective ceramic coatings are frequently the most common solutions for problems like corrosion and wear. Polymer derived ceramics technology is suitable for the preparation of ceramic coatings by pyrolysis in a furnace but requires high temperatures for the ceramization. To overcome this restriction a Nd:YVO 4 laser (λ = 1064 nm) as energy source was used to process a novel ceramic coating system composed of an organosilazane with zirconia and alumina particles specially to protect magnesium. The resulting dense ceramic coating with a thickness up to 20 µm exhibits very good adhesion (25.9 ± 2.7 MPa) to the magnesium substrate, exceptionally high hardness (19.79 ± 1.90 GPa), an outstanding thermal shock stability but also a low coefficient of friction (0.21 ± 0.02) and a very good wear protection towards a SiC counter body. We combine published and new mineralogical data on most major taxa of brachiopods from all over the world, to investigate patterns and controls on brachiopod carbonate mineralogy. Measurements of 1726 specimens in 162 species (including 56 fossil species) ranged from 79°N to 74°S and from intertidal to almost 4000 m deep. Calcareous brachiopods mostly create strong resilient valves of very low-Mg calcite ($\bar{\chi }$ χ ¯ = 1.3 wt% MgCO3). The substrate-cemented Craniida ($\bar{\chi }$ χ ¯ = 8.9 wt% MgCO3) and Thecideida ($\bar{\chi }$ χ ¯ = 6.5 wt% MgCO3) are unusual in precipitating calcite with higher Mg content. This is the first study to find bimineralic brachiopods; a few species show a combination of low-Mg ($\bar{\chi }$ χ ¯ = 0.8 wt% MgCO3) and intermediate-Mg calcite ($\bar{\chi }$ χ ¯ = 7.2 wt% MgCO3) (sensu Smith AM, Key MM Jr, Gordon DP. 2006. While Mg in calcite varies systematically among valve layers and sometimes along the growth axis, we found no consistent difference between valves of the same individual. A weak latitudinal signal indicates some overall temperature control of Mg, but in general, brachiopods are active calcifiers, precipitating low-Mg calcite even when Mg:Ca ratio in seawater is high. Magnesium as a biodegradable material offers promising results in recent studies of different maxillo-facial fracture models. To overcome adverse effects caused by the fast corrosion of pure magnesium in fluid surroundings, various alloys, and surface modifications are tested in animal models. In specified cases, magnesium screws already appeared for clinical use in maxillofacial surgery. The present study aims to compare the bone healing outcome in a non-load-bearing fracture scenario of the forehead in sheep when fixed with standard-sized WE43 magnesium fixation plates and screws with plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) surface modification in contrast to titanium osteosynthesis. Surgery was performed on 24 merino mix sheep. The plates and screws were explanted en-bloc with the surrounding tissue after four and twelve weeks. The outcome of bone healing was investigated with micro-computed tomography, histological, immunohistological, and fluorescence analysis. There was no significant difference between groups concerning the bone volume, bone volume/ total volume, and newly formed bone in volumetric and histological analysis at both times of investigation. The fluorescence analysis revealed a significantly lower signal in the magnesium group after one week, although there was no difference in the number of osteoclasts per mm2. The magnesium group had significantly fewer vessels per mm2 in the healing tissue. In conclusion, the non-inferiority of WE43-based magnesium implants with PEO surface modification was verified concerning fracture healing under non-load-bearing conditions in a defect model. Titanium implants, the current gold standard of fracture fixation, can lead to adverse effects linked to the implant material and often require surgical removal. Therefore, degradable metals like the magnesium alloy WE43 with plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) surface modification gained interest. Yet, miniplates of this alloy with PEO surface modification have not been examined in a fracture defect model of the facial skeleton in a large animal model. This study shows, for the first time, the non-inferiority of magnesium miniplates compared to titanium miniplates. In radiological and histological analysis, bone healing was undisturbed. The electropolishing behavior of pure magnesium and its alloys in ethylene glycol (EG), diethylene glycol (DEG), triethylene glycol (TrEG), and tetraethylene glycol (TeEG) solutions containing sodium chloride was investigated using electrochemical measurements, microscopic observations, and reflectance measurements. Large light-grayish cloudy areas with micrometer-scale linear irregularities were formed on the magnesium surface via constant-voltage electrolysis in the EG solution, whereas mirror-finished magnesium surfaces were successfully obtained in the DEG and TeEG solutions. Among these, the DEG solution is considered appropriate for electropolishing because of its lower viscosity and market price. The reflectance of the entire visible wavelength region gradually increased with time during electrolysis in the DEG solution at 308 K. We found that short-term electrolysis for 3 min at the higher voltage of 75 V should be selected if a moderately polished surface is to be rapidly obtained, whereas long-term electrolysis for 60–300 min at 50 V should be performed if a highly polished surface with an extremely high reflectivity measuring more than 80% can be obtained. Three-dimensional magnesium specimens with curved and spiral shapes and an LZ91 magnesium alloy consisting of a simple solid-solution matrix can also be electropolished via electrolysis in a DEG solution. The friction stir welding of A365 and AZ91C alloys was conducted in this study to assess the effect of tilt angle, linear velocity and rotating speed on the elongation, hardness and tensile strength using the response surface method. Then, the weld microstructure was investigated by SEM, TEM and EDS analysis to deeply investigate the structure of A365–AZ91C weld. It was realized that the grain size of weld joint has grown and the crack and tunnel were formed when the rotating speed improved from 1000 to 2000 rpm, which produced a decline in the hardness and strength and a rise in the elongation. Moreover, an increment of linear velocity up to 60 mm/min led to the refinement of the weld microstructure, which was followed by an enhancement in the strength and hardness of the weld, whereas the elongation deteriorated. In the case of tilt angle, the highest elongation and strength were detected at a tilt angle of 2∘, but the highest hardness was observed at a tilt angle of 4∘ because of the nucleation of Al3Mg2 and Al 1 2 Mg 1 7 intermetallics. Results of optimization exhibited that the concurrent improvement of the strength, hardness and elongation can be acquired with the tilt angle of 3∘, rotating speed of 1600 rpm and linear velocity of 53 mm/min. The possible relationship between dietary magnesium status and proteinuria has been suggested by a number of previous studies. However, human studies on this association are limited. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the independent relationship between dietary magnesium intake and urinary protein excretion. The present study was a post hoc analysis of the previous randomized clinical trial that evaluated the effect of dietary phosphorus restriction on proteinuria. The baseline data of 90 participants with proteinuria and chronic kidney disease was used to measure the association between dietary magnesium intake and proteinuria. Participants were asked to record their 24-h food intake for three days a week in a questionnaire. Urinary protein to creatinine ratio (UPCR) in a random urine sample was measured to be a marker for proteinuria. Out of 90 patients included in the study, 47 were men and 43 were women. The mean ± standard deviation of age and body mass index were 59.05 ± 14.16 years and 29.02 ± 5.54 kg/m2, respectively. The patients' average daily dietary intake of energy and magnesium were 2183 kcal and 169.44 mg, respectively. A significant inverse correlation was found between the dietary intake of magnesium and UPCR (r = − 0.219, p = 0.042). This association remained significant even after adjusting for confounding variables (β = − 0.222, p = 0.028). The findings of the present study showed a significant inverse relationship between the magnesium intake and proteinuria. Although, the design of the current research was cross-sectional, it has provided a basis for conducting future longitudinal studies and trials to better elucidate such a relationship. Combined polymetallic exposure may be an influential factor in osteoporosis. This study aimed to explore the association between polymetallic combined exposure and osteoporosis. A total of 2115 participants were included. Plasma concentrations of 22 metals were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Osteoporosis was defined as a T ≤ − 2.5. The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression, binary logistics regression, and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) model were used to explore the association between plasma metals and osteoporosis. LASSO regression showed that 10 metals were associated with osteoporosis in the total population (magnesium, calcium, manganese, nickel, cobalt, arsenic, selenium, rubidium, cadmium, aluminum) and women (magnesium, calcium, molybdenum, nickel, cobalt, arsenic, selenium, rubidium, cadmium, aluminum), and four metals associated with men (magnesium, cobalt, aluminum, iron). Logistics regression showed that in total population, magnesium (ORQ3 = 0.653, 95% CI = 0.446–0.954) was negatively correlated with osteoporosis, while aluminum (ORQ2 = 1.569, 95% CI = 1.095–2.248, ORQ4 = 1.616, 95% CI = 1.109–2.354) and cadmium (ORQ4 = 1.989, 95% CI = 1.379–2.870) were positively correlated; in women, magnesium (ORQ3 = 0.579, 95% CI = 0.379–0.883) was negatively correlated with osteoporosis, while aluminum (ORQ2 = 1.563, 95% CI = 1.051–2.326, ORQ4 = 1.543, 95% CI = 1.024–2.326) and cadmium (ORQ3 = 1.482, 95% CI = 1.003–2.191, ORQ4 = 1.740, 95% CI = 1.167–2.596) were positively correlated. BKMR model showed that combined polymetallic exposure had an overall positive effect on osteoporosis, magnesium was negatively associated with osteoporosis, and cadmium, selenium, and aluminum were positively associated with osteoporosis. Metal mixtures in plasma were associated with osteoporosis risk. Magnesium may reduce the risk of osteoporosis, while cadmium, selenium, and aluminum may increase the risk of osteoporosis. Previous studies exploring the relationship between dietary potassium and magnesium intake and the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) have yielded inconsistent results and the lack evidence from rural China. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the association between dietary potassium and magnesium intake and the risk of T2DM in rural China. Data was collected from the Henan Rural Cohort Study in 2017. A validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire assessed dietary potassium and magnesium intake. Logistic regression models were used to calculate odds ratio (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) to evaluate the effect of dietary potassium, magnesium and the potassium-magnesium ratio on the risk of T2DM. A total of 38384 individuals were included in the study, and 3616 participants developed T2DM. Logistic regression analysis revealed that the OR (95% CI) of the highest versus dietary potassium and magnesium and potassium-magnesium ratio intakes were 0.67 (0.59, 0.75), 0.76 (0.67, 0.88), and 0.57 (0.50, 0.66), respectively, compared to the subjects with the lowest quartile of intakes. In addition, gender partially influences the relationship between dietary magnesium and T2DM prevalence (P-interaction = 0.042). The group with the highest dietary potassium and dietary magnesium intake had the lowest risk of T2DM, with an OR (95% CI) of 0.63 (0.51-0.77). Dietary potassium and magnesium intake are important modifiable risk factors for T2DM in rural China. Dietary potassium intake > 1.8g/day, dietary magnesium intake > 358.6mg/day and < 414.7mg/day and potassium-magnesium ratio >5.1 should be encouraged to prevent better and manage T2DM. Objective: To compare the effectiveness of inhaled Magnesium Sulfate associated with Salbutamol versus Inhaled Salbutamol alone in patients with moderate and severe asthma exacerbations. Method: Clinical, prospective and randomized study with patients between 3 and 14 years of age divided into two groups: one to receive inhaled salbutamol associated with magnesium sulfate (GSM), the other to receive inhaled salbutamol alone (GS). The sample consisted of 40 patients, 20 patients in each group. Severity was classified using the modified Wood-Downes score, with values between 4 and 7 classified as moderate and 8 or more classified as severe. Results: Post-inhalation scores decreased both in patients who received salbutamol and magnesium and in those who received salbutamol alone, with no statistically significant difference between the groups. Conclusions: Despite the benefits when administered intravenously, inhalation of the drug alone or in combination did not reduce the severity of the exacerbation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abnormal visual experience during the critical period can cause deficits in visual function, such as amblyopia. High magnesium (Mg2+) supplementary can restore ocular dominance (OD) plasticity, which promotes the recovery of amblyopic eye acuity in adults. However, it remains unsolved whether Mg2+ could recover binocular vision in amblyopic adults and what the molecular mechanism is for the recovery. We found that in addition to the recovery of OD plasticity, binocular integration can be restored under the treatment of high Mg2+ in amblyopic mice. Behaviorally, Mg2+-treated amblyopic mice showed better depth perception. Moreover, the effect of high Mg2+ can be suppressed with transient receptor potential melastatin-like 7 (TRPM7) knockdown. Collectively, our results demonstrate that high Mg2+ could restore binocular visual functions from amblyopia. TRPM7 is required for the restoration of plasticity in the visual cortex after high Mg2+ treatment, which can provide possible clinical applications for future research and treatment of amblyopia. Ni-rich layered oxides are receiving increased attention as cathodes due to their high energy density. However, the gradual structural transformation during charging/discharging will lead to capacity degradation. The introduction of pillar elements into the Li slab is beneficial for the lattice stability and cycle performance. Herein, atomic configuration, electronic structure, and electrochemical redox behavior of a Mg-doped LiNiO2 cathode were studied. Analysis of the calculations shows that Mg doping can significantly improve the cycle performance and electronic conductivity, but suppresses the Li mobility to a certain extent in the cathode. The theoretical study gives an insight into the microscopic mechanism of Mg doping to improve the performance of Ni-rich cathode material, which is a necessary supplement to the experimental research. Commercial pure cast magnesium (Mg) was subjected to friction stir processing (FSP) at a rotational speed of 600 rpm and tool traverse speed of 60 mm/min. The samples extracted from cast Mg and friction stir processed magnesium have been analysed for the microstructure, hardness, and temperature-dependent damping capacity. The average grain size of as cast pure Mg is reduced from 780 to 26 μm after FSP. There is about a 15% increase in hardness after FSP. The dynamic mechanical analyser (DMA) measured the damping capacity using a three-point bending mode. The FSPed Mg sample exhibited 50% lower damping capacity than the cast Mg at room temperature. However, as the temperature increased, significantly above 80°C, the damping capacity of the FSPed magnesium was greater than that of the cast magnesium. At room temperature, the damping capacity of FSPed Mg was decreased because of the formation of tangled dislocations. Background/Objectives: Reduced serum magnesium (Mg) levels have been associated with obesity, insulin resistance (IR), type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome in adults. However, in the children population, the evidence is still limited. In this cross-sectional study, we aimed to analyze the association of serum Mg levels with the frequency of overweight and obesity and cardiometabolic traits in 189 schoolchildren (91 girls and 98 boys) between 6 and 12 years old from Mexico City. Subjects/Methods: Anthropometrical data were collected and biochemical parameters were measured by enzymatic colorimetric assay. Serum Mg level was analyzed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index was used as a surrogate marker to evaluate IR. Results: Serum Mg level was negatively associated with overweight (Odds ratio [OR] = 0.377, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.231–0.614, p < 0.001) and obesity (OR = 0.345, 95% CI 0.202–0.589, p < 0.001). Serum Mg level resulted negatively associated with body mass index (BMI, β = −1.16 ± 0.26, p < 0.001), BMI z-score (β = −0.48 ± 0.10, p < 0.001) and TyG index (β = −0.04 ± 0.04, p = 0.041). Through a mediation analysis was estimated that BMI z-score accounts for 60.5% of the negative association of serum Mg level with IR (Sobel test: z = 2.761; p = 0.005). Due to their biodegradable properties, magnesium- and zinc-based alloys are in the focus of interest for numerous medical applications, e.g. in the form of thin wires. To achieve improved processability by using hot forming and to obtain higher diameter reductions per pass, the dieless wire drawing process is presented in this paper. In order to investigate the processability and the resulting mechanical properties, a selection of magnesium- and zinc-alloys as well as process parameters are chosen, and wire manufacturing is carried out using the dieless drawing process. The resulting process windows and mechanical properties for the selected materials are discussed. It is found that the length of the forming zone is an important indicator for the process window and the cross-sectional area reduction accuracy in the dieless wire drawing process. Furthermore, process parameter variations result in a distinct variation of the mechanical properties of the wires, whereas process temperatures close to the wire extrusion temperature result in mechanical properties similar to the as-extruded wires. Good localization of the deformation is found for forming zones of 25–75 mm length at elevated temperatures and cross-sectional area reductions of up to 30% are possible for Z1 and ZX10 in one drawing step. A series of new pyrazolate and mixed pyrazolate/pyrazole magnesium complexes is described and their reactivity toward carbon dioxide is examined. The dimeric complex [Mg(pztBu,tBu)2]2 inserts CO2 instantly and quantitatively forming the tetrameric complex [Mg(CO2·pztBu,tBu)2]4 and monomeric donor‐stabilized [Mg(CO2·pztBu,tBu)2(thf)2]. Complexes of the type [Mgx(pzR,R)2x(HpzR,R)y]n (R = iPr, tBu) engage in similar insertion reactions involving dissociation of the carbamic acid HOOCpzR,R. Even solid polymeric derivatives [Mg(pzR,R)2]n (R = Me, H) react instantaneously and exhaustively with CO2, the resulting [Mg(CO2·pz)2]m featuring a CO2 capacity of 35.7 wt% (8.2 mmol g−1). All described magnesium pyrazolates display completely reversible CO2 uptake in solution and in the solid state, respectively, as monitored via VT 1H NMR and in situ FTIR spectroscopy as well as thermogravimetric analysis. Fluorinated [Mg2(pzCF3,CF3)4(thf)3] does not yield any isolable CO2 insertion product but exhibits the highest activity in the catalytic transformation of epoxides and CO2 to cyclic carbonates.
