Macy has spent three decades reporting on the region, focusing on social and economic trends and how they affect ordinary people. Her book is an intimate look at cops, judges, drug dealers, young heroin users and their long-suffering parents, doctors and health activists struggling to fight the epidemic – and executives of a pharmaceutical company that aggressively marketed opioids. (3.) We remember South African Nobel prize-winning writer NADINE GORDIMER. She died Sunday at the age of 90. She was one of that country's best-known artists and one of the most vocal and effective opponents of apartheid. Gordimer's novels included A Sport of Nature, July's People, Burger's Daughter and The Conservationist. Several of her books were banned under apartheid.
