Although the importance of music for individuals has long been recognized, the effect of music on employee behavior in the workplace has not yet been fully realized. We developed a theoretical model emphasizing the mediating role of psychological safety in the relationship between pleasant music and voice behavior. A survey was conducted with 241 hotel employees in China. Structural equation modeling analysis results show that pleasant music was positively related to psychological safety, which was positively related to voice behavior. Further, psychological safety fully mediated the relationship between pleasant music and voice behavior. We discuss the implications of our findings to understand the mechanisms through which pleasant music boosts employees' voice behavior, and suggest future research directions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper reports an evaluation of a pilot programme of workplace music mentoring for generalist classroom teachers in eleven early childhood education settings in Australia. Mentoring in the arts in general and in music specifically is still under-researched despite a body of literature on approaches to mentoring, and descriptions of mentoring practices and outcomes. The pilot programme was created to increase access to music education for Australian children through establishing mentoring relationships between experienced specialist music teachers and generalist classroom teachers. The programme aimed to address a lack of music training during undergraduate teacher preparation and a perceived lack of confidence in music teaching and singing amongst generalist classroom teachers. The evaluation included semi-structured interviews with ten principals, seven mentors and nineteen mentees regarding their experiences. Three researchers conducted the thematic analysis of transcripts independently and refined the emerging themes through iterative discussions. Findings demonstrate that the workplace music mentoring delivered positive outcomes, enriching schools' music curricula, structuring locally relevant programmes, building resources, teacher music skills and confidence, and impacting positively on student learning and behaviour. This in-situ longitudinal mentoring model expands on traditional approaches to professional development for in-service teachers of music through a collaborative self-development approach. Music as an environmental aspect of professional workplaces has been closely studied with respect to consumer behavior while sparse attention has been given to its relevance for employee behavior. In this article, we focus on the influence of music upon cooperative behavior within decision-making groups. Based on results from two extended 20-round public goods experiments, we find that happy music significantly and positively influences cooperative behavior. We also find a significant positive association between mood and cooperative behavior. Consequently, while our studies provide partial support for the relevance of affect in relation to cooperation within groups, we also show an independently important function of happy music that fits with a theory of synchronous and rhythmic activity as a social lubricant. More generally, our findings indicate that music and perhaps other atmospheric variables that are designed to prime consumer behavior might have comparably important effects for employees and consequently warrant closer investigation. Street music in Japan is often associated with the performance of one’sshōbai, translated as one’s trade, business, or occupation. An examination of sonic practices in the public performance of retail work in Japan traces the links and departures between premodern, modern, and postmodern expressions, focusing on the affective interpretation of work songs and chants through the notion ofgambaru(striving for achievement). While recorded music has mostly replaced live performances of street music in contemporary urban Japan, recordings that sell certain everyday products still reference traditional practices, creating a sense of nostalgia and renewed longing for these products. This strategy, however, can also fail when consumer expectations do not match the nostalgic vision. These sonic expressions (yobikomi, the “calling in” of customers) can serve as an index for the workers’ sense of engagement with their trade, but in post-recessional Japanese society, the sound of customer service can also be linked to the workers’ relationship to the workplace and consumers’ expectations about value for money. The topic of this article is the emerging trend of singing at work. The discussion is exemplified by results from case studies of singing interventions carried out at two different work places. The research comprised group interviews, participant observation and questionnaires. Our phenomenological and hermeneutic approach focuses mainly on the employees' experience of singing at work. The analysis was driven by thematic coding. The discussion is illuminated mainly by Etienne Wenger's community of practice theory. The following research questions were developed: how do the members of a workplace community experience choral singing? What implications do the participants see for themselves as individuals and for the organization? We identified four axes of impact: enjoyment, comfort zone, communality, and identity and roles. A workplace choir can challenge perceptions about how collegues view each other and transform individual identities. Consequently, the choir may also change the workplace as a practice community. Music's power in leadership and the development of trust has been both recognised and documented at least since the time of the Ancient Greeks. The potential impact of face-to-face meetings, as opposed to communication by other means – even aided by a battery of technological developments – is also widely accepted. The authors argue that modern quality-driven managers are missing a significant opportunity by their apparent failure to perceive and exploit the synergy between these two elements. The article commences by tracing the history of the use of music and its influence on interpersonal behaviour. It continues by exploring the various attributes of music that can be brought to bear on improving quality in meetings. Finally, it describes the many tools and opportunities that managers have to exploit the power of music in targeting greater efficiency in communication, cognition and cooperation among quality-focused teams. This article examines the introduction of mechanical music to the workplace in the first half of the twentieth century. A focus on shifting strategies for programming said music reveals several subtle shifts in both the understanding of labor and attitudes towards workers. Ultimately, music programming fueled a functional and circular co-definition of work and music. A case study is presented which examines the use of singing as a means of building worker morale at the brass manufacturer Scovill Company in Waterbury, Connecticut during World War I. Beginning in 1918, company management allowed workers a five-to-ten minute period of rest in which they would engage in choral singing. According to the author, these sessions were enjoyed by many of the workers across lines of gender and ethnicity. Details on labor strikes at the factory are also presented.

This study assesses the restaurant servicescape variable sound pressure level (volume) of the restaurant soundscape, comprised of four conditions-ambient noise, ambient noise plus soft classical, ambient noise plus comfortable classical, and ambient noise plus comfortable but slightly loud classical music-and subject sensitivity to noise and their influence on mood and approach or avoidance behavior in a fine dining, white-tablecloth university restaurant. The model in the study is derived from the environmental psychology model proposed by Mehrabian and Russel (M-R) (1974). The widely tested stimulus-organism-response (S-O-R) model provides strong evidence that people respond to environments in the form of repeat patronage and satisfaction according to two primary emotion factors: pleasure and arousal. Participants' noise sensitivity was measured, using Weinstein's Noise Sensitivity Scale (WNS). Significant relationships were drawn between sound pressure levels, sensitivity to noise, mood (pleasure and arousal), gender, and behavioral intent relative to repeat patronage and ability to communicate in the various experimental conditions. Presence of appropriate music at 'comfortable' volume levels (music plus ambient noise range of 62-67 dBA in restaurant with 35-50 patrons) increases dining pleasure of college-age clientele (19-27 years old), return behavior intentions, and overall consumer satisfaction. No music and music that is judged too loud result in similar perceptions of overall loudness and negative effects on measures of customer dining pleasure and repeat behavioral response. Females had greater sensitivity to sound levels, rating a given sound level as louder as and less pleasant than their male counterparts. Implications for restaurant managers are discussed. If used properly, music can be a useful tool employed by hoteliers. This article synthesizes most, if not all, of the recent and seminal work from a variety of disciplines to outline the positive effects that atmospheric music can have on a hotel's patrons and employees. Specifically, the psychological influences of music in a hotel's physical environments, a hotel's telephone system, and a hotel's proprietary website are discussed. In terms of the physical environment, music can: 1) cause guests to spend more time and money in an establishment; 2) influence buyer/seller interactions; 3) improve customers' attitudes during a wait; 4) amend guests' perceptions of brand personality and décor; and 5) enhance employee productivity. Regarding telephone interactions, evidence suggests that the proper use of music can bolster customers' satisfaction with the telephone encounter. The history of music in the workplace is a neglected area of study. This article explores the policies towards music in the paternalist Rowntree and Cadbury confectionery factories from the late nineteenth to the late twentieth century. We argue that the two firms were pioneering in their early use of music before becoming key players in the industrial welfare movement following the First World War. The broadcasting of music by Rowntree and Cadbury in the mid to late twentieth century is then placed in the context of a widespread adoption of tannoyed music in factories. We argue that music was employed as a means of easing the monotony of factory work whilst simultaneously aiming to improve productivity levels. Abstract: The effects of background music have been widely studied in the literature but few studies have tested effects of music in commercial settings. An experiment was carried out in a bar to test influence of three different styles of music on patrons. According to a random assignment, patrons were exposed to Top 40 music, which was usually played in the bar, cartoon music or drinking songs. Results showed that drinking songs appeared to increase the length of time customers stayed in the bar and the average amount spent. A congruency hypothesis is used to explain these findings. Music has long been a uniting force among workers. Music can improve team spirit and provide an enjoyable diversion, but it is most useful in expressing the true feelings of a sometimes desperate community.
