In this article, we develop a vibronic theory of clocking in molecular quantum cellular automata (QCA). The clocking mechanism is considered for a trigonal trimeric mixed-valence (MV) system with one mobile electron, which is shown to act as the dimeric unit encoding binary information (Boolean states 0 or 1) coupled to a third redox center (Null state). The model includes the electron transfer between the three centers; vibronic coupling of the mobile charge with the "breathing" modes, forming a double degenerate Jahn–Teller vibration of the molecular triangle; and two electric fields, one collinear to the dimeric unit, which controls the binary states, and the other perpendicular to this unit, performing clocking. In the framework of the adiabatic approximation, the potential surface of the trimeric system has been studied and the condition determining switching and clocking has been analyzed in terms of the two controlling fields and the vibronic and transfer parameters. A thorough understanding of the site populations is achieved through the quantum-mechanical solution of the vibronic problem, maintaining the adiabatic condition for the controlling fields. It is shown that a MV trimer can act as a molecular clocked QCA cell, with favorable conditions being a positive electron transfer parameter and sufficiently strong vibronic coupling. We studied a Triops population from a Mediterranean temporary pond located in Guadalcázar, a township in the western part of Córdoba Province. There are four morphologically similar species of Triops occurring in the SW Iberian Peninsula. In particular, the two species found in southern Andalusia, T. baeticus and T. gadensis, cannot reliably be told apart based on known morphological characters. We thus used sequences of 12S rDNA as a molecular marker to soundly identify the population to species rank. Our results demonstrate that the Triops population studied belongs to T. gadensis. This result is rather unexpected given that the species was thought to be restricted to a small distribution range along the Atlantic coast in Cádiz Province. The population is located at approximately 170 km from previously known sites of T. gadensis and shows a previously unknown haplotype, the sixth 12S haplotype reported for the species. Based on a molecular clock designed for dating divergence events among conspecific samples of Triops, the haplotype is estimated to have diverged at 10.3–29.4 ka BP. We thus suggest that the population has high conservation value, and its habitat, including the surroundings, should be legally protected. We further propose that an open habitat type as pastureland should be retained for the surroundings of the site in order to support its ecological function in the frame of meta-populations dynamics, and as a possible source population from which new localities could be populated via passive dispersal.

Bipolar disorder (BD) is a heritable disorder characterized by shifts in mood that manifest in manic or depressive episodes. Clinical studies have identified abnormalities of the circadian system in BD patients as a hallmark of underlying pathophysiology. Fibroblasts are a well-established in vitro model for measuring circadian patterns. We set out to examine the underlying genetic architecture of circadian rhythm in fibroblasts, with the goal to assess its contribution to the polygenic nature of BD disease risk. We collected, from primary cell lines of 6 healthy individuals, temporal genomic features over a 48 h period from transcriptomic data (RNA-seq) and open chromatin data (ATAC-seq). The RNA-seq data showed that only a limited number of genes, primarily the known core clock genes such as ARNTL, CRY1, PER3, NR1D2 and TEF display circadian patterns of expression consistently across cell cultures. The ATAC-seq data identified that distinct transcription factor families, like those with the basic helix-loop-helix motif, were associated with regions that were increasing in accessibility over time. Whereas known glucocorticoid receptor target motifs were identified in those regions that were decreasing in accessibility. Further evaluation of these regions using stratified linkage disequilibrium score regression analysis failed to identify a significant presence of them in the known genetic architecture of BD, and other psychiatric disorders or neurobehavioral traits in which the circadian rhythm is affected. In this study, we characterize the biological pathways that are activated in this in vitro circadian model, evaluating the relevance of these processes in the context of the genetic architecture of BD and other disorders, highlighting its limitations and future applications for circadian genomic studies. Freshwater bivalves (Bivalvia, Unionida) are one of the most threatened groups of animals in the world. Defining species boundaries and understanding the phylogeny and genetic diversity of these species is key to guiding their conservation and management. However, the presence of significant phenotypic plasticity and convergence within this group complicates species delimitation. This includes the freshwater mussel genus Nodularia, endemic to East Asia, for which a comprehensive understanding of species diversity and phylogenetic relationships remains elusive due to inadequate sampling in previous studies, particularly in China, a widely recognized biodiversity hotspot for freshwater mussels. Here, we conduct comprehensive taxonomic and phylogenetic analyses of Nodularia species based on extensive sampling across 23 provinces in China and multiple data sources, including shell morphology, soft body anatomy, six‐gene (COI + ND1 + 16S + 18S + 28S + histone H3) and mitogenome datasets. The integrative systematics approach used here reveals 10 distinct species in this genus, four of which are new to science, i.e. Nodularia hanensis sp. nov., Nodularia huana sp. nov., Nodularia fusiformans sp. nov., Nodularia dualobtusus sp. nov. and two of which are new records for China, i.e. Nodularia dorri (Wattebled [Journal de Conchyliologie, 34, 1886, 54]) and Nodularia micheloti (Morlet [Journal de Conchyliologie, 34, 1886, 75]). We also propose that the nominal species Nodularia jourdyi (Morlet [Journal de Conchyliologie, 34, 1886, 75]) syn. nov. is a new synonym for Nodularia douglasiae (Griffith & Pidgeon, 1833) based on molecular data. BI, ML, and BEAST analyses based on the six‐gene dataset and mitochondrial phylogenomics consistently support the following phylogenetic relationships: (N. dorri + (N. hanensis sp. nov. + N. micheloti)) + (N. breviconcha + (N. huana sp. nov. + (N. fusiformans sp. nov. + ((N. nuxpersicae + N. nipponensis) + (N. dualobtusus sp. nov. + N. douglasiae))))). The molecular clock with fossil calibration indicates that Nodularia originated in the Late Cretaceous period (ca. 73.78 Mya). It then diverged into two independent clades during the Middle Paleogene (ca. 45.01 Mya), followed by a rapid burst of extant speciation during the Neogene (mean age 28.28 to 4.79 Mya). Nodularia breviconcha is the earliest differentiated taxon among the 10 Nodularia taxa, appearing during the Paleogene‐Neogene transition (28.28 Mya; 95% HPD = 14.35–48.44 Mya). Taken together, we provide a robust systematic framework for Nodularia species, addressing phylogenetic relationships, taxonomy, and evolutionary history of this group. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To explore whether circadian clock genes contribute to elicit inflammation in experimental dry eye (EDE). Methods: RNA sequencing analyzed mRNA expression patterns in EDE model. RT-qPCR and/or Western blot determined the expression of inflammatory factors and circadian genes during EDE. MethylTarget™ assays determined the promoter methylation levels of Per genes in vivo. Per2 or Per3 knockdown assessed their effects on inflammatory factors in vitro. Results: We utilized an intelligently controlled environmental system (ICES) to establish a mouse EDE model. The significant upregulated genes were enriched for circadian rhythms. Therein lied oscillatory and time-dependent upregulation of PER2 and PER3, as well as their promoter hypomethylation during EDE. Silencing PER2 or PER3 significantly decreased inflammatory factor expression and also reversed such increased inflammatory response in azacitidine (AZA) treatment in vitro model. Light/dark (LD) cycles are responsible for oscillations in gene expression, which modulate several aspects of plant physiology. Those oscillations can persist under constant conditions due to regulation by the circadian oscillator. The response of the transcriptome to light regimes is dynamic and allows plants to adapt rapidly to changing environmental conditions. We compared the transcriptome of Arabidopsis under LD and constant light (LL) for 3 days and identified different gene co‐expression networks in the two light regimes. Our studies yielded unforeseen insights into circadian regulation. Intuitively, we anticipated that gene clusters regulated by the circadian oscillator would display oscillations under LD cycles. However, we found transcripts encoding components of the flavonoid metabolism pathway that were rhythmic in LL but not in LD. We also discovered that the expressions of many stress‐related genes were significantly increased during the dark period in LD relative to the subjective night in LL, whereas the expression of these genes in the light period was similar. The nocturnal pattern of these stress‐related gene expressions suggested a form of "skotoprotection." The transcriptomics data were made available in a web application named Cyclath, which we believe will be a useful tool to contribute to a better understanding of the impact of light regimes on plants. The Cretaceous period is the time of the first appearance of the diatoms in the fossil record. These fossils give us direct evidence of the age and early evolution of the diatom lineage. The fossil record, however, is incomplete and therefore often extrapolated through time‐calibrated phylogenies. These two approaches offer different perspectives on the early evolution of diatoms, which is still poorly understood. We compiled the first comprehensive Cretaceous Diatom Database, a tool to investigate the taxonomy, diversity, and occurrence of the earliest known diatom lineages. To further aid the integration and use of the oldest diatom fossils in molecular clock analyses, we present a set of well‐documented Cretaceous fossils that can be placed onto molecular phylogenetic trees of extant and extinct species, making them ideal candidates for the calibration of molecular clocks. The analysis of the fossil record and the Cretaceous Diatom Database revealed Cretaceous diversity is substantially greater than previously thought, yet considerable taxonomic work is still needed. The Cretaceous Diatom Database and the list of Cretaceous fossils for calibrating molecular clocks represent valuable resources for future evolutionary and taxonomic studies of modern and fossil diatoms. The West Nile virus (WNV), primarily transmitted by mosquitoes, is one of the most widespread flaviviruses globally, with past outbreaks occurring in the USA and Europe. Recent studies in parts of Africa, including Kenya, have identified the West Nile virus Koutango lineage (WN-KOUTV) among phlebotomine sandfly populations, however, our understanding of this virus remains limited. This study aimed to characterize WN-KOUTV from phlebotomine sandflies. Sandflies were sampled between 12th -16th March 2021 and 16th -20th March 2023 from six villages each in Baringo and Isiolo Counties, using CDC light traps. Female sandflies were taxonomically identified and pooled based on genus and site of collection. Virus isolation was performed in Vero cells. Viral genomes were determined using next-generation sequencing. Phylogenetic and molecular clock analyses were done to decipher the virus's evolutionary relationships. Comparative analyses of amino acid sequences were performed to determine variations. Protein modeling in Pymol was conducted to elucidate variations in key protein regions. Evolutionary pressure analysis investigated the selection pressures on the virus. In vitro experiments were done to investigate the virus growth kinetics in mammalian Vero E6 and mosquito C6/36 cells. We report the isolation of WN-KOUTV from Salabani in Baringo and Aremet in Isiolo, Kenya. The isolated WN-KOUTVs clustered with previously identified WN-KOUTV strains. Comparative analysis revealed a unique amino acid at NS5 653. The WN-KOUTV lineage as a whole is under purifying selective pressure, with diversifying pressure acting at site NS3 267. The current WN-KOUTV replicated in Vero E6 and C6/36 cells comparable to West Nile virus Lineage 1a, isolated from mosquitoes. Subsequent isolations of WN-KOUTV in phlebotomine sandflies suggest potential vectors, however, vector competence studies would confirm this. Replication in mammalian and insect cell lines suggests there may exist a vector/host relationship. We speculate the close genetic relationship of WN-KOUTV strains from East and West Africa may potentially be enabled by bird migratory routes between the two regions. Most mammalian cells have molecular circadian clocks that generate widespread rhythms in transcript and protein abundance. While circadian clocks are robust to fluctuations in the cellular environment, little is known about the mechanisms by which the circadian period compensates for fluctuating metabolic states. Here, we exploit the heterogeneity of single cells both in circadian period and a metabolic parameter--protein stability--to study their interdependence without the need for genetic manipulation. We generated cells expressing key circadian proteins (CRYPTOCHROME1/2 (CRY1/2) and PERIOD1/2 (PER1/2)) as endogenous fusions with fluorescent proteins and simultaneously monitored circadian rhythms and degradation in thousands of single cells. We found that the circadian period compensates for fluctuations in the turnover rates of circadian repressor proteins and uncovered possible mechanisms using a mathematical model. In addition, the stabilities of the repressor proteins are circadian phase dependent and correlate with the circadian period in a phase-dependent manner, in contrast to the prevailing model. N6‐methyladenosine (m6A) is the most abundant epitranscriptomic mark that regulates the fate of RNA molecules. Recent studies have revealed a bidirectional interaction between m6A modification and the circadian clock. However, the precise temporal dynamics of m6A global enrichment in the central circadian pacemaker have not been fully elucidated. Our study investigates the relationship between FTO demethylase and molecular clocks in primary cells of the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN). In addition, we examined the effects of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) on Fto expression and the role of FTO in LPS‐induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in primary SCN cell culture. We observed circadian rhythmicity in the global m6A levels, which mirrored the rhythmic expression of the Fto demethylase. Silencing FTO using siRNA reduced the mesor of Per2 rhythmicity in SCN primary cells and extended the period of the PER2 rhythm in SCN primary cell cultures from PER2::LUC mice. When examining the immune response, we discovered that exposure to LPS upregulated global m6A levels while downregulating Fto expression in SCN primary cell cultures. Interestingly, we found a loss of circadian rhythmicity in Fto expression following LPS treatment, indicating that the decrease of FTO levels may contribute to m6A upregulation without directly regulating its circadian rhythm. To explore potential protective mechanisms against neurotoxic inflammation, we examined ROS production following LPS treatment in SCN primary cell cultures pretreated with FTO siRNA. We observed a time‐dependent pattern of ROS induction, with significant peak at 32 h but not at 20 h after synchronization. Silencing the FTO demethylase abolished ROS induction following LPS exposure, supporting the hypothesis that FTO downregulation serves as a protective mechanism during LPS‐induced neuroinflammation in SCN primary cell cultures. Introduction. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), circadian rhythms, and individual sleep–wake preferences, as measured by chronotype, and to assess the association between circadian clock gene expression and subjective sleep-related variables. Methods: A total of 184 individuals were recruited, underwent polysomnography (PSG), and completed questionnaires including a chronotype questionnaire (CQ), insomnia severity index (ISI), and Epworth sleepiness scale (ESS). Blood samples were collected in the evening before and morning after PSG. Gene expression analysis included BMAL1, CLOCK, PER1, CRY1, NPAS2, and NR1D1. Results: In the OSA group, the subjective amplitude (AM score of CQ) positively correlated with all circadian clock genes in the morning (R ≥ 0.230 and p < 0.05 for each one), while the morningness–eveningness (ME score of CQ) was only associated with the evening BMAL1 level (R = 0.192; p = 0.044). In healthy controls, insomnia severity correlated with evening expression of BMAL1, PER1, and CRY1. Conclusions: The findings highlight the complex interplay between OSA, circadian rhythms, and sleep-related variables, suggesting potential determinants of morning chronotype in OSA and implicating disrupted circadian clock function in subjective feelings of energy throughout the day. Breast cancer (BC) is the leading cause of cancer death among women worldwide. Women employed in shift jobs face heightened BC risk due to prolonged exposure to night shift work (NSW), classified as potentially carcinogenic by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). This risk is linked to disruptions in circadian rhythms governed by clock genes at the cellular level. However, the molecular mechanisms are unclear. This study aimed to assess clock genes as potential BC biomarkers among women exposed to long-term NSW. Clock gene expression was analysed in paired BC and normal breast tissues within Nurses' Health Studies I and II GEO datasets. Validation was performed on additional gene expression datasets from healthy night shift workers and women with varying BC susceptibility, as well as single-cell sequencing datasets. Post-transcriptional regulators of clock genes were identified through miRNA analyses. Significant alterations in clock gene expression in BC compared to normal tissues were found. BHLHE40, CIART, CLOCK, PDPK1, and TIMELESS were over-expressed, while HLF, NFIL3, NPAS3, PER1, PER3, SIM1, and TEF were under-expressed. The downregulation of PER1 and TEF and upregulation of CLOCK correlated with increased BC risk in healthy women. Also, twenty-six miRNAs, including miR-10a, miR-21, miR-107, and miR-34, were identified as potential post-transcriptional regulators influenced by NSW. In conclusion, a panel of clock genes and circadian miRNAs are suggested as BC susceptibility biomarkers among night shift workers, supporting implications for risk stratification and early detection strategies. The accuracy of cell division requires precise regulation of the cellular machinery governing DNA/genome duplication, ensuring its equal distribution among the daughter cells. The control of the centrosome cycle is crucial for the formation of a bipolar spindle, ensuring error‐free segregation of the genome. The cell and centrosome cycles operate in close synchrony along similar principles. Both require a single duplication round in every cell cycle, and both are controlled by the activity of key protein kinases. Nevertheless, our comprehension of the precise cellular mechanisms and critical regulators synchronizing these two cycles remains poorly defined. Here, we present our hypothesis that the spatiotemporal regulation of a dynamic equilibrium of mitotic kinases activities forms a molecular clock that governs the synchronous progression of both the cell and the centrosome cycles. The biological clock in eukaryotes controls daily rhythms in physiology and behavior. It displays a complex organization that involves the molecular transcriptional clock and the redox oscillator which may coordinately work to control cellular rhythms. The redox oscillator has emerged very early in evolution in adaptation to the environmental changes in O2 levels and has been shown to regulate daily rhythms in glycerolipid (GL) metabolism in different eukaryotic cells. GLs are key components of lipid droplets (LDs), intracellular storage organelles, present in all living organisms, and essential for energy and lipid homeostasis regulation and survival; however, the cell bioenergetics status is not constant across time and depends on energy demands. Thus, the formation and degradation of LDs may reflect a time-dependent process following energy requirements. This work investigated the presence of metabolic rhythms in LD content along evolution by studying prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells and organisms. We found sustained temporal oscillations in LD content in Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria and Caenorhabditis elegans synchronized by temperature cycles, in serum-shock synchronized human embryonic kidney cells (HEK 293 cells) and brain tumor cells (T98G and GL26) after a dexamethasone pulse. Moreover, in synchronized T98G cells, LD oscillations were altered by glycogen synthase kinase-3 (GSK-3) inhibition that affects the cytosolic activity of the metabolic oscillator or by knocking down LIPIN-1, a key GL synthesizing enzyme. Overall, our findings reveal the existence of metabolic oscillations in terms of LD content highly conserved across evolutionary scales notwithstanding variations in complexity, regulation, and cell organization. Tardigrades are a diverse phylum of microscopic invertebrates widely known for their extreme survival capabilities. Molecular clocks suggest that tardigrades diverged from other panarthropods before the Cambrian, but their fossil record is extremely sparse. Only the fossil tardigrades Milnesium swolenskyi (Late Cretaceous) and Paradoryphoribius chronocaribbeus (Miocene) have resolved taxonomic positions, restricting the availability of calibration points for estimating for the origin of this phylum. Here, we revise two crown-group tardigrades from Canadian Cretaceous-aged amber using confocal fluorescence microscopy, revealing critical morphological characters that resolve their taxonomic positions. Formal morphological redescription of Beorn leggi reveals that it features Hypsibius-type claws. We also describe Aerobius dactylus gen. et sp. nov. based on its unique combination of claw characters. Phylogenetic analyses indicate that Beo. leggi and Aer. dactylus belong to the eutardigrade superfamily Hypsibioidea, adding a critical fossil calibration point to investigate tardigrade origins. Our molecular clock estimates suggest an early Paleozoic diversification of crown-group Tardigrada and highlight the importance of Beo. leggi as a calibration point that directly impacts estimates of shallow nodes. Our results suggest that independent terrestrialization of eutardigrades and heterotardigrades occurred around the end-Carboniferous and Lower Jurassic, respectively. These estimates also provide minimum ages for convergent acquisition of cryptobiosis. The redescription of two Cretaceous-aged tardigrade fossils resolved their relationship with modern species, with one belonging to a new genus. First, significantly higher mate-finding success was found under light condition than under constant darkness condition in Phauda flammans, a typical diurnal moth. We speculate that mate-finding behavior in P. flammans may be influenced by the light-sensitive opsin genes Long wavelength opsin (PfLW), Ultraviolet opsin (PfUV) and Blue opsin (PfBL), which are potentially regulated by both light-cues and endogenous circadian rhythms. Second, the circadian clock genes Period (PfPer), Timeless (PfTim), Cryptochrome1 (PfCry1), Cryptochrome2 (PfCRY2), Cryptochrome3 (PfCry-like), Clock (PfClk), Cycle (PfCyc), Vrille (PfVri), and Slimb (PfSli) were identified in P. flammans. Third, circadian rhythms in the relative expression levels of opsin and circadian clock genes were demonstrated via quantitative real-time PCR analysis, with peak expression coinciding with the mate-finding peak. Notably, the relative expression of PfLW in males P. flammans was significantly higher than that in females P. flammans at the mate-finding peaks Zeitgeber time (ZT) 8 and ZT 10 under light, while the expression of the opsin gene PfBL showed a similar pattern at ZT 10 under light. Additionally, the expression of the clock gene PfCry-like was significantly higher in males than in females at ZT 8 and ZT 10 under light, while PfPer, PfTim, PfClk and PfCyc exhibited similar male-biased expression patterns at ZT 10 under light. Conversely, PfCry1 and PfVri expression was significantly higher in females than in male at ZT 8 under light. In conclusion, sex differences were detected in the expression of opsin and circadian clock genes, which indicated that light-mediated regulation of these genes may contribute to the daytime mate-finding behavior of P. flammans. The Diederik cuckoo, Chrysococcyx caprius, is a small Afrotropical bird in the family Cuculidae. It is taxonomically related to 13 other species within the genus Chrysococcyx and is migratory in sub‐Saharan Africa. It has a unique breeding behaviour of being a brood parasite: Breeding pairs lay their eggs in the nests of a host species and hatchlings expel the eggs of the host species. The aim of the present study was to investigate diversity in two circadian clock genes, Clock and Adcyap1, to probe for a relationship between genetic polymorphisms and their role in circannual timing and habitat selection (phenology) in intra‐African migrants. DNA extracted from blood was used for the PCR amplification and sequencing of clock genes in 30 Diederik cuckoos. Three alleles were detected for Clock with similar genotypes between individuals from the Northern and Southern breeding ranges while 10 alleles were detected for Adcyap1, having shorter alleles in the North and longer alleles in the South. Population genetic analyses, including allele frequency and zygosity analysis, showed distinctly higher frequencies for the most abundant Clock allele, containing 10 polyglutamine repeats, as well as a high degree of homozygosity. In contrast, all individuals were heterozygous for Adcyap1 and alleles from both regions showed distinct differences in abundance. Comparisons between both clock genes and phenology found several phenotypic correlations. This included evidence of a relationship between the shorter alleles and habitat selection as well as a relationship between longer alleles and timing. In both instances, evidence is provided that these effects may be sex‐specific. Given that these genes drive some of the synchronicity between environments and the life cycles of birds, they provide valuable insight into the fitness of species facing global challenges including climate change, urbanisation and expanding agricultural practices. Diel cycle is of enormous biological importance as it imposes daily oscillation in environmental conditions, which temporally structures most ecosystems. Organisms developed biological time-keeping mechanisms – circadian clocks – that provide a significant fitness advantage over competitors by optimising the synchronisation of their biological activities. While circadian clocks are ubiquitous in Eukaryotes, they are so far only characterised in Cyanobacteria within Prokaryotes. However, growing evidence suggests that circadian clocks are widespread in the bacterial and archaeal domains. As Prokaryotes are at the heart of crucial environmental processes and are essential to human health, unravelling their time-keeping systems provides numerous applications in medical research, environmental sciences, and biotechnology. In this review, we elaborate on how novel circadian clocks in Prokaryotes offer research and development perspectives. We compare and contrast the different circadian systems in Cyanobacteria and discuss about their evolution and taxonomic distribution. We necessarily provide an updated phylogenetic analysis of bacterial and archaeal species that harbour homologs of the main cyanobacterial clock components. Finally, we elaborate on new potential clock-controlled microorganisms that represent opportunities of ecological and industrial relevance in prokaryotic groups such as anoxygenic photosynthetic bacteria, methanogenic archaea, methanotrophs or sulphate-reducing bacteria. We present a dated and calibrated molecular phylogeny for one of the most characteristic genera of Neotropical savannas, Byrsonima (Malpighiaceae), based on the ETS, ITS, and psbA-trnH markers. We sampled 33 species of Byrsonima and four species of the outgroups Blepharandra, Diacidia, and Pterandra to test the monophyly of the infrageneric classification of the genus. Bayesian inference (BI) analysis was performed for the combined molecular dataset. Seven morphological characters were optimized on the obtained tree. Calibration points derived from a published chronogram for Malpighiaceae were used alongside a relaxed, uncorrelated molecular clock on Beast 1.8.4. Ancestral range reconstructions focusing on four main Neotropical biomes (Cerrado, Atlantic rainforest, Amazon rainforest, and Caatinga dry forests) were performed on BioGeoBEARS. Our phylogenetic results corroborated the monophyly of Byrsonima, but all of its subgenera and sections were polyphyletic, with all morphological characters circumscribing these infrageneric ranks being highly homoplastic. The most recent common ancestor of Byrsonima was widespread in South American biomes at 11.41 Ma, posteriorly diversifying in the Amazon rainforests up to 7.72 Ma, when it started massively diversifying in Neotropical savannas. A few re-colonization events from savannas to rain or dry forests occurred from 2.95–0.53 Ma. These results corroborate the mid-Miocene origins of Neotropical savannas, and future studies should aim to sample Mesoamerican species of Byrsonima. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study explored the role of circadian rhythm genes (CRGs) in lower grade glioma (LGG) development and found that certain genes, such as CRY1, NPAS2, and RORB, were associated with increased or decreased risk of LGG. The study also investigated the correlation between CRGs and immune cell infiltration, revealing a negative association with macrophage infiltration and a positive correlation with B cell and CD8 + T cell infiltration. Additionally, the study identified major mutated CRGs, including PER2, BMAL1, CLOCK, and BMAL2, and their potential interaction with other CNS-associated genes. Heterotrophic protists are vital in Earth's ecosystems, influencing carbon and nutrient cycles and occupying key positions in food webs as microbial predators. Fossils and molecular data suggest the emergence of predatory microeukaryotes and the transition to a eukaryote-rich marine environment by 800 million years ago (Ma). Neoproterozoic vase-shaped microfossils (VSMs) linked to Arcellinida testate amoebae represent the oldest evidence of heterotrophic microeukaryotes. This study explores the phylogenetic relationship and divergence times of modern Arcellinida and related taxa using a relaxed molecular clock approach. We estimate the origin of nodes leading to extant members of the Arcellinida Order to have happened during the latest Mesoproterozoic and Neoproterozoic (1054 to 661 Ma), while the divergence of extant infraorders postdates the Silurian. Our results demonstrate that at least one major heterotrophic eukaryote lineage originated during the Neoproterozoic. A putative radiation of eukaryotic groups (e.g., Arcellinida) during the early-Neoproterozoic sustained by favorable ecological and environmental conditions may have contributed to eukaryotic life endurance during the Cryogenian severe ice ages. Moreover, we infer that Arcellinida most likely already inhabited terrestrial habitats during the Neoproterozoic, coexisting with terrestrial Fungi and green algae, before land plant radiation. The most recent extant Arcellinida groups diverged during the Silurian Period, alongside other taxa within Fungi and flowering plants. Crosstalk between metabolism and circadian rhythms is a fundamental building block of multicellular life, and disruption of this reciprocal communication could be relevant to disease. Here, we investigated whether maintenance of circadian rhythms depends on specific metabolic pathways, particularly in the context of cancer. We found that in adult mouse fibroblasts, ATP levels were a major contributor to signal from a clock gene luciferase reporter, although not necessarily to the strength of circadian cycling. In contrast, we identified significant metabolic control of circadian function across a series of pancreatic adenocarcinoma cell lines. Metabolic profiling of congenic tumor cell clones revealed substantial diversity among these lines that we used to identify clones to generate circadian reporter lines. We observed diverse circadian profiles among these lines that varied with their metabolic phenotype: The most hypometabolic line [exhibiting low levels of oxidative phosphorylation (OxPhos) and glycolysis] had the strongest rhythms, while the most hypermetabolic line had the weakest rhythms. Pharmacological enhancement of OxPhos decreased the amplitude of circadian oscillation in a subset of tumor cell lines. Strikingly, inhibition of OxPhos enhanced circadian rhythms only in the tumor cell line in which glycolysis was also low, thereby establishing a hypometabolic state. We further analyzed metabolic and circadian phenotypes across a panel of human patient-derived melanoma cell lines and observed a significant negative association between metabolic activity and circadian cycling strength. Together, these findings suggest that metabolic heterogeneity in cancer directly contributes to circadian function and that high levels of glycolysis or OxPhos independently disrupt circadian rhythms in these cells. Coral exhibits diel rhythms in behavior and gene transcription. However, the influence of elevated temperature, a key factor causing coral bleaching, on these rhythms remains poorly understood. To address this, we examined physiological, metabolic, and gene transcription oscillations in the Acropora tenuis-Cladocopium sp. holobiont under constant darkness (DD), light-dark cycle (LD), and LD with elevated temperature (HLD). Under LD, the values of photosystem II efficiency, reactive oxygen species leakage, and lipid peroxidation exhibited significant diel oscillations. These oscillations were further amplified during coral bleaching under HLD. Gene transcription analysis identified 24-hour rhythms for specific genes in both coral and Symbiodiniaceae under LD. Notably, these rhythms were disrupted in coral and shifted in Symbiodiniaceae under HLD. Importantly, we identified over 20 clock or clock-controlled genes in this holobiont. Specifically, we suggested CIPC (CLOCK-interacting pacemaker-like) gene as a core clock gene in coral. We observed that the transcription of two abundant rhythmic genes encoding glycoside hydrolases (CBM21) and heme-binding protein (SOUL) were dysregulated by elevated temperature. These findings indicate that elevated temperatures disrupt diel gene transcription rhythms in the coral-Symbiodiniaceae holobiont, affecting essential symbiosis processes, such as carbohydrate utilization and redox homeostasis. These disruptions may contribute to the thermal bleaching of coral. Significant differences in rhythmic gene expression between the coral host and its symbiont under elevated temperature are revealed, suggesting the host is dependent on its endogenous molecular clock, while the symbiont's rhythmic expression is more influenced by environmental stimuli. Substantial evidence has shown that the Circadian Locomotor Output Cycles Kaput (Clock) gene is a core transcription factor of circadian rhythms that regulates dopamine (DA) synthesis. To shed light on the mechanism of this interaction, flexible multielectrode arrays (MEAs) are developed that can measure both DA concentrations and electrophysiology chronically. The dual functionality is enabled by conducting polymer PEDOT doped with acid‐functionalized carbon nanotubes (CNT). The PEDOT/CNT microelectrode coating maintained stable electrochemical impedance and DA detection by square wave voltammetry for 4 weeks in vitro. When implanted in wild‐type (WT) and Clock mutation (MU) mice, MEAs measured tonic DA concentration and extracellular neural activity with high spatial and temporal resolution for 4 weeks. A diurnal change of DA concentration in WT is observed, but not in MU, and a higher basal DA concentration and stronger cocaine‐induced DA increase in MU. Meanwhile, striatal neuronal firing rate is found to be positively correlated with DA concentration in both animal groups. These findings offer new insights into DA dynamics in the context of circadian rhythm regulation, and the chronically reliable performance and dual measurement capability of this technology hold great potential for a broad range of neuroscience research. The recent advances in sequencing technologies, phylogenomics and divergence dating methods call for an integrative review of the current state of Hymenoptera systematics. We here explore the impact of these latest developments on the Hymenoptera phylogeny and our understanding of the timing of Hymenoptera evolution, while identifying the current methodological constraints and persistent knowledge gaps that warrant further investigation. Our review highlights the lack of consensus among the backbone phylogeny of Hymenoptera between key phylogenomic studies, as the higher level phylogeny remains unresolved in key nodes such as the relationships among Eusymphyta, the relationships within the Infraorder Proctotrupomorpha and the placements of the superfamilies Ichneumonoidea, Ceraphronoidea and Vespoidea. Furthermore, we underline the huge variation in divergence age estimates for Hymenoptera and detect several major gaps and/or disagreements between the fossil record and available age estimates, either due to the poorly studied fossil record or problematic age estimates, or both. To better understand the timing of Hymenoptera evolution and the role of key diversification factors, we will need continuous efforts to (i) reconcile conflicts among morphological and molecular phylogenies, by improving taxon sampling of underrepresented lineages, applying novel techniques to study morphology, making use of genome‐scale data and critically assessing incongruences in genetic markers; (ii) improve the Hymenoptera fossil record, by exercising integrative taxonomy and bringing together paleontologists and neontologists; and (iii) reconcile age estimates, by relying on tip dating approaches to bridge fossils, morphology and genomes across time. The field of chronobiology has advanced significantly since ancient observations of natural rhythms. The intricate molecular architecture of circadian clocks, their hierarchical organization within the mammalian body, and their pivotal roles in organ physiology highlight the complexity and significance of these internal timekeeping mechanisms. In humans, circadian phenotypes exhibit considerable variability among individuals and throughout the individual's lifespan. A fundamental challenge in mechanistic studies of human chronobiology arises from the difficulty of conducting serial sampling from most organs. The concept of studying circadian clocks in vitro relies on the groundbreaking discovery by Ueli Schibler and colleagues that nearly every cell in the body harbours autonomous molecular oscillators. The advent of circadian bioluminescent reporters has provided a new perspective for this approach, enabling high‐resolution continuous measurements of cell‐autonomous clocks in cultured cells, following in vitro synchronization pulse. The work by Steven A. Brown has provided compelling evidence that clock characteristics assessed in primary mouse and human skin fibroblasts cultured in vitro represent a reliable estimation of internal clock properties in vivo. The in vitro approach for studying molecular human clocks in cultured explants and primary cells, pioneered by Steve Brown, represents an invaluable tool for assessing inter‐individual differences in circadian characteristics alongside comprehensive genetic, biochemical and functional analyses. In a broader context, this reliable and minimally invasive approach offers a unique perspective for unravelling the functional inputs and outputs of oscillators operative in nearly any human tissue in physiological contexts and across various pathologies. In mammals, intrinsic 24 h or circadian rhythms are primarily generated by the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN). Rhythmic daily changes in the transcriptome and proteome of SCN cells are controlled by interlocking transcription‐translation feedback loops (TTFLs) of core clock genes and their proteins. SCN cells function as autonomous circadian oscillators, which synchronize through intercellular neuropeptide signalling. Physiological and behavioural rhythms can be severely disrupted by genetic modification of a diverse range of genes and proteins in the SCN. With the advent of next generation sequencing, there is unprecedented information on the molecular profile of the SCN and how it is affected by genetically targeted alteration. However, whether the expression of some genes is more readily affected by genetic alteration of the SCN is unclear. Here, using publicly available datasets from recent RNA‐seq assessments of the SCN from genetically altered and control mice, we evaluated whether there are commonalities in transcriptome dysregulation. This was completed for four different phases across the 24 h cycle and was augmented by Gene Ontology Molecular Function (GO:MF) and promoter analysis. Common differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and/or enriched GO:MF terms included signalling molecules, their receptors, and core clock components. Finally, examination of the JASPAR database indicated that E‐box and CRE elements in the promoter regions of several commonly dysregulated genes. From this analysis, we identify differential expression of genes coding for molecules involved in SCN intra‐ and intercellular signalling as a potential cause of abnormal circadian rhythms. Circadian clock function declines with ageing, which can aggravate ageing‐related diseases such as type 2 diabetes and neurodegenerative disorders. Understanding age‐related changes in the circadian system at a systemic level can contribute to the development of strategies to promote healthy ageing. The goal of this study was to investigate the impact of ageing on 24‐h rhythms in amine metabolites across four tissues in young (2 months of age) and old (22–25 months of age) mice using a targeted metabolomics approach. Liver, plasma, the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN; the location of the central circadian clock in the hypothalamus) and the paraventricular nucleus (PVN; a downstream target of the SCN) were collected from young and old mice every 4 h during a 24‐h period (n = 6–7 mice per group). Differential rhythmicity analysis revealed that ageing impacts 24‐h rhythms in the amine metabolome in a tissue‐specific manner. Most profound changes were observed in the liver, in which rhythmicity was lost in 60% of the metabolites in aged mice. Furthermore, we found strong correlations in metabolite levels between the liver and plasma and between the SCN and the PVN in young mice. These correlations were almost completely abolished in old mice. These results indicate that ageing is accompanied by a severe loss of the circadian coordination between tissues and by disturbed rhythmicity of metabolic processes. The tissue‐specific impact of ageing may help to differentiate mechanisms of ageing‐related disorders in the brain versus peripheral tissues and thereby contribute to the development of potential therapies for these disorders. Ca2+/calmodulin‐dependent protein kinase IIα (CaMKIIα) is widely expressed in the brain and is involved in various functions, including memory formation, mood and sleep. We previously reported that CaMKIIα is involved in the circadian molecular clock. Mice lacking functional CaMKIIα (K42R mice) exhibited a gradual increase in activity time (α decompression) of running‐wheel (RW) activity due to a lengthened circadian period (τ) of activity offset under constant darkness (DD). In the present study, to investigate the functional roles of CaMKIIα in behavioural rhythms, we measured RW and general movements simultaneously under prolonged DD. Tau became longer as the relative intensity of behaviour activity within an activity time shifted from activity onset towards activity offset. In some K42R mice, α was gradually expanded with a marked reduction of RW activity, while general movements persisted without noticeable decline, which was followed by an abrupt shortening of α (α compression) with differential phase shifts of the activity onset and offset and recovery of RW activity. These results suggest that an internal coupling between the oscillators controlling activity onset and offset is bidirectional but with different strengths. The α compression occurred recurrently in 38% of K42R mice examined with an average interval of 37 days in association with attenuation of RW activity but never in the wild‐type (WT) mice. Consistent with behavioural rhythms, the circadian period of the PER2::LUC rhythm in the cultured suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) slice was significantly longer in K42R than in WT. Since the discovery of the genetic origin of the circadian clock in Drosophila melanogaster by Konopka and Benzer in 1971, most of the research about the regulation of the molecular circadian clock relies on laboratory models. Additional models such as Cyanobacteria, Neurospora crassa, Arabidopsis and rodents helped chronobiologists to describe the species‐specific molecular clocks and their regulation. However, the lack of tools and the difficulty to access biological samples somehow excluded human from this research landscape outside behavioural research. Among many other impressive achievements, Steve Brown provided to the community of chronobiologists new tools and strategies to study the individual human circadian clock and its regulation. Background: Temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJOA) has a high incidence rate, but its pathogenesis remains unclear. Circadian rhythm is an important oscillation in the human body and influences various biological activities. However, it is still unclear whether circadian rhythm affects the onset and development of TMJOA. Methods: We disrupted the normal rhythm of rats and examined the expression of core clock genes in the mandibular condylar cartilage of the jaw and histological changes in condyles. After isolating rat mandibular condylar chondrocytes, we upregulated or downregulated the clock gene Per1, examined the expression of cartilage matrix-degrading enzymes, tested the activation of the GSK3β/β-CATENIN pathway and verified it using agonists and inhibitors. Finally, after downregulating the expression of Per1 in the mandibular condylar cartilage of rats with jet lag, we examined the expression of cartilage matrix-degrading enzymes and histological changes in condyles. Results: Jet lag led to TMJOA-like lesions in the rat mandibular condyles, and the expression of the clock gene Per1 and cartilage matrix-degrading enzymes increased in the condylar cartilage of rats. When Per1 was downregulated or upregulated in mandibular condylar chondrocytes, the GSK3β/β-CATENIN pathway was inhibited or activated, and the expression of cartilage matrix-degrading enzymes decreased or increased, which can be rescued by activator and inhibitor of the GSK3β/β-CATENIN pathway. Moreover, after down-regulation of Per1 in mandibular condylar cartilage in vivo, significant alleviation of cartilage degradation, cartilage loss, subchondral bone loss induced by jet lag, and inhibition of the GSK3β/β-CATENIN signaling pathway were observed. Circadian rhythm disruption can lead to TMJOA. The clock gene Per1 can promote the occurrence of TMJOA by activating the GSK3β/β-CATENIN pathway and promoting the expression of cartilage matrix-degrading enzymes. Plasmodium, a digenetic parasite, requires a host and a vector for its life cycle completion. Most Plasmodium species display circadian rhythmicity during their intraerythrocytic cycle within the host, aiding in immune evasion. This rhythmicity, however, diminishes in in vitro cultures, highlighting the importance of host-derived signals for synchronizing the parasite's asexual cycle. Studies indicate a species–specific internal clock in Plasmodium, dependent on these host signals. Melatonin, a hormone the pineal gland produces under circadian regulation, impacts various physiological functions and is extensively reviewed as the primary circadian marker affecting parasite rhythms. Research suggests that melatonin facilitates synchronization through the PLC-IP3 signaling pathway, activating phospholipase C, which triggers intracellular calcium release and gene expression modulation. This evidence strongly supports the role of melatonin as a key circadian marker for parasite synchronization, presenting new possibilities for targeting the melatonin pathway when developing novel therapeutic approaches. Circadian oscillations of several physiological and behavioral processes are an established process in all the organisms anticipating the geophysical changes recurring during the day. The time-keeping mechanism is controlled by a transcription translation feedback loop involving a set of well-characterized transcription factors. The synchronization of cells, controlled at the organismal level by a brain central clock, can be mimicked in vitro, pointing to the notion that all the cells are endowed with an autonomous time-keeping system. Metabolism undergoes circadian control, including the mitochondrial terminal catabolic pathways, culminating under aerobic conditions in the electron transfer to oxygen through the respiratory chain coupled to the ATP synthesis according to the oxidative phosphorylation chemiosmotic mechanism. In this study, we expanded upon previous isolated observations by utilizing multiple cell types, employing various synchronization protocols and different methodologies to measure mitochondrial oxygen consumption rates under conditions simulating various metabolic stressors. The results obtained clearly demonstrate that mitochondrial respiratory activity undergoes rhythmic oscillations in all tested cell types, regardless of their individual respiratory proficiency, indicating a phenomenon that can be generalized. However, notably, while primary cell types exhibited similar rhythmic respiratory profiles, cancer-derived cell lines displayed highly heterogeneous rhythmic changes. This observation confirms on the one hand the dysregulation of the circadian control of the oxidative metabolism observed in cancer, likely contributing to its development, and on the other hand underscores the necessity of personalized chronotherapy, which necessitates a detailed characterization of the cancer chronotype. A growing body of research has identified circadian-rhythm disruption as a risk factor for metabolic health. However, the underlying biological basis remains complex, and complete molecular mechanisms are unknown. There is emerging evidence from animal and human research to suggest that the expression of core circadian genes, such as circadian locomotor output cycles kaput gene (CLOCK), brain and muscle ARNT-Like 1 gene (BMAL1), period (PER), and cyptochrome (CRY), and the consequent expression of hundreds of circadian output genes are integral to the regulation of cellular metabolism. These circadian mechanisms represent potential pathophysiological pathways linking circadian disruption to adverse metabolic health outcomes, including obesity, metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes. Here, we aim to summarize select evidence from in vivo animal models and compare these results with epidemiologic research findings to advance understanding of existing foundational evidence and potential mechanistic links between circadian disruption and altered clock gene expression contributions to metabolic health–related pathologies. Findings have important implications for the treatment, prevention, and control of metabolic pathologies underlying leading causes of death and disability, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. Using Bayesian phylogenetic analysis, we evaluated the impact of incorporating this biogeographic calibration on estimates of treefrog divergence times.A relatively continuous, high‐elevation mountain range existed before the Pliocene and the opening of the Gulf of Paria (4.45 ± 0.85 Ma). Phytotriades auratus and G. erectiflora would have been distributed across the Paria and Northern Range mountains as a single population since the Pliocene. Divergence times among treefrogs (Arboranae) were older than those inferred using fossil calibrations alone, with mean age estimates for subfamilies and genera being ~2 and ~1.2 million years older, respectively.Our study presents a biogeographic calibration based on a vicariant model that connects the evolution of the populations of a hylid through geology and ecological data. Circadian rhythm (CR) disturbances are among the most commonly observed symptoms during major depressive disorder, mostly in the form of disrupted sleeping patterns. However, several other measurable parameters, such as plasma hormone rhythms and differential expression of circadian clock genes (ccgs), are also present, often referred to as circadian phase markers. In the recent years, CR disturbances have been recognized as an essential aspect of depression; however, most of the known animal models of depression have yet to be evaluated for their eligibility to model CR disturbances. In this study, we investigate the potential of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)‐treated animals as a disease model for research in CR disturbances in treatment‐resistant depression. For this purpose, we evaluate the changes in several circadian phase markers, including plasma concentrations of corticosterone, ACTH, and melatonin, as well as gene expression patterns of 13 selected ccgs at 3 different time points, in both peripheral and central tissues. We observed no impact on plasma corticosterone and melatonin concentrations in the ACTH rats compared to vehicle. However, the expression pattern of several ccgs was affected in the ACTH rats compared to vehicle. In the hippocampus, 10 ccgs were affected by ACTH treatment, whereas in the adrenal glands, 5 ccgs were affected and in the prefrontal cortex, hypothalamus and liver 4 ccgs were regulated. In the blood, only 1 gene was affected. Individual tissues showed changes in different ccgs, but the expression of Bmal1, Per1, and Per2 were most generally affected. Collectively, the results presented here indicate that the ACTH animal model displays dysregulation of a number of phase markers suggesting the model may be appropriate for future studies into CR disturbances. Circadian rhythms are a ubiquitous feature throughout the organism. Accumulating evidence suggests that the dysfunction of circadian rhythms due to genetic mutations or environmental factors contributes to the genesis and progress of multiple diseases. In this review, we summarize the molecular clocks and the expression of clock-controlled genes in the mammalian ocular surface. Based on the circadian expression of these genes, we conclude the diurnal oscillations of cellular biological activities in the mammalian ocular surface. Moreover, we evaluate the factors entraining circadian oscillators in the ocular surface. Finally, we further discuss the latest development of the close correlation between circadian rhythms and ocular health. Briefly, this review aimed to synthesize the previous studies to aid in understanding the importance of circadian rhythms in the ocular surface and the possible opportunities for circadian rhythm-based interventional strategies to restore the homeostasis of the ocular surface. This article explores the expression patterns of circadian clock genes in severe asthmatic airways and their association with WNT signaling, a pathway involved in airway remodeling in asthma. The study analyzed gene expression data from bronchial epithelial samples of patients with asthma and healthy subjects. The results showed that the expression of NR1D2, PER2, and PER3 was downregulated in severe asthmatic airways compared to healthy subjects. Additionally, pathway analysis revealed reduced activity of WNT signaling in severe asthma. The master circadian clock, located in the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN), organizes the daily rhythm in minute ventilation (V ̇ E). However, the extent that the daily rhythm in V ̇ E is secondary to SCN-imposed O2 and CO2 cycles (i.e., metabolic rate) or driven by other clock mechanisms remains unknown. Here, we experimentally shifted metabolic rate using time-restricted feeding (without affecting light-induced synchronization of the SCN) to determine the influence of metabolic rate in orchestrating the daily V ̇ E rhythm. Mice eating predominantly at night exhibited robust daily rhythms in O2 consumption (V ̇ O2), CO2 production (V ̇ CO2), and V ̇ E with similar peak times (approximately ZT18) that were consistent with SCN organization. However, feeding mice exclusively during the day separated the relative timing of metabolic and ventilatory rhythms, resulting in an approximately 8.5-h advance in V ̇ CO2 and a disruption of the V ̇ E rhythm, suggesting opposing circadian and metabolic influences on V ̇ E. To determine if the molecular clock of cells involved in the neural control of breathing contributes to the daily V_ E rhythm, we examined V ̇ E in mice lacking BMAL1 in Phox2b-expressing respiratory cells (i.e., BKOP mice). The ventilatory and metabolic rhythms of predominantly night-fed BKOP mice did not differ from wild-type mice. However, in contrast to wild-type mice, exclusive day feeding of BKOP mice led to an unfettered daily V̇ E rhythm with a peak time aligning closely with the daily V ̇ CO2 rhythm. Taken together, these results indicate that both daily V ̇ CO2 changes and intrinsic circadian time-keeping within Phox2b respiratory cells are predominant orchestrators of the daily rhythm in ventilation. Numerous insect species living in temperate regions survive adverse conditions, such as winter, in a state of developmental arrest. The most reliable cue for anticipating seasonal changes is the day-to-night ratio, the photoperiod. The molecular mechanism of the photoperiodic timer in insects is mostly unclear. Multiple pieces of evidence suggest the involvement of circadian clock genes, however, their role might be independent of their well-established role in the daily oscillation of the circadian clock. Furthermore, reproductive diapause is preferentially studied in females, whereas males are usually used for circadian clock research. Given the idiosyncrasies of male and female physiology, we decided to test male reproductive diapause in a strongly photoperiodic species, the linden bug Pyrrhocoris apterus. The data indicate that reproduction is not under circadian control, whereas the photoperiod strongly determines males' mating capacity. Clock mutants in pigment dispersing factor and cryptochrome-m genes are reproductive even in short photoperiod. Organisms adapt to unfavorable seasonal conditions to survive. These seasonal adaptations rely on the correct interpretation of environmental cues such as photoperiod, and temperature. Genetic studies in several organisms, including the genetic powerhouse Drosophila melanogaster, indicate that circadian clock components, such as period and timeless, are involved in photoperiodic-dependent seasonal adaptations, but our understanding of this process is far from complete. In particular, the role of temperature as a key factor to complement photoperiodic response is not well understood. The development of new sequencing technologies has proven extremely useful in understanding the plastic changes that the clock and other cellular components undergo in different environmental conditions, including changes in gene expression and alternative splicing. This article discusses the integration of photoperiod and temperature for seasonal biology as well as downstream molecular and cellular pathways involved in the regulation of physiological adaptations that occur with changing seasons. We focus our discussion on the current understanding of the involvement of the molecular clock and the circadian clock neuronal circuits in these adaptations in D. melanogaster. The photoperiodic mechanism distinguishes between long and short days, and the circadian clock system is involved in this process. Although the necessity of circadian clock genes for photoperiodic responses has been demonstrated in many species, how the clock system contributes to photoperiodic mechanisms remains unclear. A comprehensive study, including the functional analysis of relevant genes and physiology of their expressing cells, is necessary to understand the molecular and cellular mechanisms. Since Drosophila melanogaster exhibits a shallow photoperiodism, photoperiodic mechanisms have been studied in non-model species, starting with brain microsurgery and neuroanatomy, followed by genetic manipulation in some insects. Here, we review and discuss the involvement of the circadian clock in photoperiodic mechanisms in terms of neural networks in insects. We also review recent advances in the neural mechanisms underlying photoperiodic responses in insects and snails, and additionally circadian clock systems in snails, whose involvement in photoperiodism has hardly been addressed yet. Brain neurosecretory cells, insulin-like peptide/diuretic hormone44-expressing pars intercerebralis neurones in the bean bug Riptortus pedestris and caudo-dorsal cell hormone-expressing caudo-dorsal cells in the snail Lymnaea stagnalis, both promote egg laying under long days, and their electrical excitability is attenuated under short and medium days, which reduces oviposition. The photoperiodic responses of the pars intercerebralis neurones are mediated by glutamate under the control of the clock gene period. Thus, we are now able to assess the photoperiodic response by neurosecretory cell activity to investigate the upstream mechanisms, that is, the photoperiodic clock and counter. The fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster exhibits two activity peaks, one in the morning and another in the evening. Because the two peaks change phase depending on the photoperiod they are exposed to, they are convenient for studying responses of the circadian clock to seasonal changes. To explain the phase determination of the two peaks, Drosophila researchers have employed the two-oscillator model, in which two oscillators control the two peaks. The two oscillators reside in different subsets of neurons in the brain, which express clock genes, the so-called clock neurons. However, the mechanism underlying the activity of the two peaks is complex and requires a new model for mechanistic exploration. Here, we hypothesize a four-oscillator model that controls the bimodal rhythms. The four oscillators that reside in different clock neurons regulate activity in the morning and evening and sleep during the midday and at night. In this way, bimodal rhythms are formed by interactions among the four oscillators (two activity and two sleep oscillators), which may judiciously explain the flexible waveform of activity rhythms under different photoperiod conditions. The circadian clock is responsible for the regulation of different cellular processes, and its disturbance has been linked to the development of different diseases, such as cancer. The main molecular mechanism for this issue has been linked to the crosstalk between core clock regulators and intracellular pathways responsible for cell survival. The PI3K/AKT signalling pathway is one of the most known intracellular pathways in the case of cancer initiation and progression. This pathway regulates different aspects of cell survival including proliferation, apoptosis, metabolism, and response to environmental stimuli. Accumulating evidence indicates that there is a link between the PI3K/AKT pathway activity and circadian rhythm in physiologic and cancer‐related pathogenesis. Different classes of PI3Ks and AKT isoforms are involved in regulating circadian clock components in a transcriptional and functional manner. Reversely, core clock components induce a rhythmic fashion in PI3K and AKT activity in physiologic and pathogenic conditions. The aim of this review is to re‐examine the interplay between this pathway and circadian clock components in normal condition and cancer pathogenesis, which provides a better understanding of how circadian rhythms may be involved in cancer progression. Circadian rhythms regulate physiological processes in approximately 24 h cycles, and their disruption is associated with various diseases. Inflammation may perturb circadian rhythms, though these interactions remain unclear. This study examined whether systemic inflammation induced by an intraperitoneal injection of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) could alter central and peripheral circadian rhythms and diurnal neuroimmune dynamics. Mice were randomly assigned to two groups: the saline control group and the LPS group. The diurnal expression of circadian clock genes and inflammatory cytokines were measured in the hypothalamus, hippocampus, and liver. Diurnal dynamic behaviors of microglia were also assessed. Our results revealed that the LPS perturbed circadian gene oscillations in the hypothalamus, hippocampus, and liver. Furthermore, systemic inflammation induced by the LPS could trigger neuroinflammation and perturb the diurnal dynamic behavior of microglia in the hippocampus. Plants, like many other living organisms, have an internal timekeeper, the circadian clock, which allows them to anticipate photoperiod rhythms and environmental stimuli to optimally adjust plant growth, development, and fitness. These fine-tuned processes depend on the interaction between environmental signals and the internal interactive metabolic network regulated by the circadian clock. Although primary metabolites have received significant attention, the impact of the circadian clock on secondary metabolites remains less explored. Transcriptome analyses revealed that many genes involved in secondary metabolite biosynthesis exhibit diurnal expression patterns, potentially enhancing stress tolerance. Understanding the interaction mechanisms between the circadian clock and secondary metabolites, including plant defense mechanisms against stress, may facilitate the development of stress-resilient crops and enhance targeted management practices that integrate circadian agricultural strategies, particularly in the face of climate change. While elucidating the evolutionary trajectory of green anacondas, we previously documented the existence of two distinct species, Eunectes akayima sp. nov. and Eunectes murinus (Linnaeus, 1758), that separated approximately 10 million years ago. Our research integrates a novel molecular clock approach, focuses on tectonic plate movements with fossil records as minimal chronological markers, and offers a refined understanding of speciation events in relation to major biogeographical occurrences in South America. Mitochondrial DNA analysis demonstrates a significant genetic divergence between the species, which is supported by a notable difference in sexual size dimorphism (SSD) intensity between the two species, along with other morphological differences. This paper also rectifies earlier oversights in the description of the new species and clarifies taxonomic ambiguities in compliance with the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (henceforth ICZN). In addition, we designate a neotype for E. murinus to stabilize the group. In an effort to honor Indigenous nations, E. akayima sp. nov. derives its name from the Carib language, advocating for the inclusion of traditional names in scientific discourse. Our paper not only contributes to the taxonomic stability of anacondas but also advocates for the usage of Indigenous names in zoological nomenclature by adopting a more inclusive and flexible approach to the ICZN and eliminating unintended exclusionary practices that we have inherited in science as in other disciplines. Muscle isometric torque fluctuates according to time-of-day with such variation owed to the influence of circadian molecular clock genes. Satellite cells (SCs), the muscle stem cell population, also express molecular clock genes with several contractile-related genes oscillating in a diurnal pattern. Currently, limited evidence exists regarding the relationship between SCs and contractility, although long-term SC ablation alters muscle contractile function. Whether there are acute alterations in contractility following SC ablation and with respect to the time-of-day is unknown. We investigated whether short-term SC ablation affected contractile function at two times of day and whether any such alterations led to different extents of eccentric contraction-induced injury. Using an established mouse model to deplete SCs, we characterized muscle clock gene expression and ex vivo contractility at two times-of-day (morning: 0700 and afternoon: 1500). Morning-SC+ animals demonstrated ∼25%–30% reductions in tetanic/eccentric specific forces and, after eccentric injury, exhibited ∼30% less force-loss and ∼50% less dystrophinnegative fibers versus SC− counterparts; no differences were noted between Afternoon groups (Morning-SC+: −5.63 ± 0.61, Morning-SC−: −7.93 ± 0.61; N/cm2; P < 0.05) (Morning-SC+: 32 ± 2.1, Morning-SC−: 64 ± 10.2; dystrophinnegative fibers; P < 0.05). As Ca++ kinetics underpin force generation, we also evaluated caffeine-induced contracture force as an indirect marker of Ca++ availability and found similar force reductions in Morning-SC+ vs. SC− mice. We conclude that force production is reduced in the presence of SCs in the morning but not in the afternoon, suggesting that SCs may have a time-of-day influence over contractile function. Sequencing of a partial fragment of the mitochondrial ND5–cytb genes (1553 bp) and its nuclear copies in Phylloscopus borealis sensu lato (s.l.) individuals, belonging to different taxonomic groups from different parts of the range was carried out. The identity of the majority of taxon-specific and unique mitochondrial substitutions in examinandus and xanthodryas forms to those in nuclear copies of borealis mtDNA was demonstrated. Differences between the examinandus mitochondrial haplotypes and nuclear copies of borealis mtDNA were low (P = 0.02), and the genetic divergence in borealis–examinandus, borealis–xanthodryas, and examinandus–xanthodryas mtDNA itself considerably exceeded these values (P = 0.035, 0.044, and 0.046, respectively). For the first time, nuclear copy of the mitochondrial haplotype of the easternmost xanthodryas form was found in nuclear genome of one borealis individual from the western part of the breeding range (Komi Republic), and nuclear copies of xanthodryas mtDNA from Toyama Prefecture (Japan) were found to be close to the borealis mitochondrial haplotypes from Kytlym (Sverdlovsk oblast) (P = 0.018). Thus, the source of most substitutions in the mitochondrial DNA of the studied forms are mutations that arose in nuclear copies of mitochondrial genes. The origin of examinandus and xanthodryas mitochondrial haplotypes from nuclear copies of borealis mtDNA and close similarity of their nuclear genomes give reason to consider mitogenomes of these forms as haplotype variants of a single species, Ph. borealis s. l. With high degree of probability, it can be argued that the haplotype divergence time of the analyzed forms is considerably lower than 2.5–3 million years, as previously hypothesized by a number of authors, and the "molecular clock," which does not take into account recombination events between nuclear and mitochondrial genomes, cannot be used in this case.
