Abstract

The ITER Neutral Beam Test Facility (NBTF) is hosted in Padua and includes two experiments: MITICA, the 1 MeV full-scale prototype of the ITER HNB injector, and SPIDER, the 100 keV full-size ITER Radio Frequency (RF) negative ion source. SPIDER and MITICA experiments are actively cooled by Ultrapure Water (UPW) to electrically insulate in-vessel components that are biased to high voltage levels. Water conductivity is an important monitored parameter to ensure components' insulation by limiting the leakage current of active cooled equipment. A very low conductivity water is especially important in MITICA, where components need to operate up to 1 MVdc, an insulation level beyond the actual industrial standard. Careful selection of suitable materials for any in-vessel (vacuum insulation) and out-vessel component (air insulation) is of utmost importance, as their interaction with water and different environment may affect their chemical and mechanical properties. Additionally, materials selection can severely influence water chemical characteristics: cooling circuits are made of metals (copper, aluminium, steel) and insulating materials (plastic, rubber) when connecting parts at different electric potentials. During the first years of cooling plant exploitation, it was shown that water degrades more quickly than estimated by design. The Primary Circuits (PCs) that showed the most severe water degradation during operation are SPIDER and MITICA power supply ones, respectively called PC01 and PC08. This paper describes the results of specific experimental tests performed on MITICA PC08 to evaluate possible causes of water degradation and detect sources of contaminants that might compromise future experimental campaigns. The cooling circuit was subdivided in different sections and water circulation tests were performed at constant temperature and flowrate. Water samples were collected and Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) analyses were performed to quantify the type and amount of metals released. Moreover, components samples collected along their cooling circuits were characterized by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) technique to detect undesired contaminants and immersed in UPW to study their corrosion behaviour using metal release tests. Abstract

The MITICA experiment, under construction at Consorzio RFX (Padova, Italy), is the full-scale prototype for the Neutral Beam Injector (NBI) of the ITER tokamak. One of the critical aspects for the ion beam accelerator is high voltage holding over long vacuum gaps (up to 1 MV from the ion source to the enclosing vessel), with the main issue being the occurrence of discharge events, which could severely damage the machine. To study this phenomenology, with the aim of prevention of discharges, the High Voltage Padova Test Facility (HVPTF) experiment is in operation. The setup of HVPTF consists in a cylindrical vacuum vessel, with stable pressure control, in which two replaceable electrodes are mounted with an adjustable gap width. The electrodes are powered by independent power supplies, allowing for a total voltage difference up to 800kV. Current and voltage of the power supplies, as well as the pressure and the gas composition inside the chamber are monitored at a sampling rate of 100 Hz. Additionally, the bremsstrahlung X-ray emission produced by the accelerated electrons during discharges is monitored by means of scintillators at higher rates (up to 1 MHz). Data from past experimental campaigns have been analyzed and correlations between the current/voltage signals and the X-ray emission have been highlighted. Recently, a new detector, based on the Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) and optimized for X-ray detection, has been installed at HVPTF. The detector acts as a very fast single photon counting system (with rates up to about 125 MHz), allowing for real-time measurement of the X-ray emission rate, which could be used as basis for the development of a feedback control system for the prevention of discharges. Abstract

ITER envisages the use of two heating neutral beam injectors plus an optional one as part of the auxiliary heating and current drive system, to reach the desired performances during its various phases of operation. The 16.5 MW expected neutral beam power per injector is several notches higher than worldwide existing facilities. In order to enable such development, a Neutral Beam Test Facility (NBTF) was established at Consorzio RFX, exploiting the synergy of two test beds, called SPIDER and MITICA. SPIDER is dedicated developing and characterizing large efficient negative ion sources at relevant parameters in ITER-like conditions: source and accelerator located in the same vacuum where the beam propagates, immunity to electromagnetic interferences of multiple radio-frequency (RF) antennas, avoidance of RF-induced discharges on the outside of the source. Three years of experiments on SPIDER have addressed to the necessary design modifications to enable full performances. The source is presently under a long shut-down phase to incorporate learnings from the experimental campaign, in particular events/issues occurred during operation, which led to the identification of improvement opportunities/necessities (e.g. RF discharges, local burns, water leaks, other damages, configuration/design upgrades to maximize chances/margin to quest target parameters). Parallelly, developments on MITICA, the full-scale prototype of the ITER Neutral Beam Injector (NBI) featuring a 1 MV accelerator and ion neutralization, are underway including manufacturing of the beam source, accelerator and the beam line components, while power supplies and auxiliary plants, already installed, are under final testing and commissioning. MITICA is the full scale prototype of the ITER Heating Neutral Beam (HNB) currently under construction at the Neutral Beam Test Facility in Padova (Italy). In the ITER HNB, negative ions (H−/D−) are produced in the Ion Source (IS) polarized to ground at −1012 kV, then extracted and accelerated to ground at 1 MeV energy and finally neutralized. The complex power supply system feeding the IS includes two non-standard equipment, beyond the current industrial standard for insulation voltage level (-1 MVdc) and dimensions: 1) the High Voltage Deck1 (HVD1), a large air insulated Faraday cage (12.5 m (L) x 8.4 m (W) x 9.6 m (H)) hosting the IS power supplies and diagnostics; 2) the High Voltage Bushing Assembly (HVBA), a -1 MVdc air to SF6 Bushing which interfaces the HVD1 with the SF 6 insulated Transmission Line (TL) connecting the Acceleration Grid Power Supply system with the IS, carrying inside its High Voltage electrode all IS power and diagnostics conductors. The HVD1 and HVBA are installed inside a large HV hall. The main design choices leading to the final hall layout, integrating the HV experimental equipment and the conventional building plants assuring the necessary clearance required by such very high electric insulation level, are presented. Moreover, the paper reports on the manufacturing design developed by the supplier, the factory type tests to validate the design of the HVD1, the factory tests carried out on the HVBA and the on-site installation, commissioning and testing activities. Abstract

The construction of MITICA, the full-size prototype of the ITER Heating Neutral Beam Injectors (HNBs) is in progress at the Neutral Beam Test Facility (NBTF) located in Padova, Italy. The design of the central control (CODAS) and interlock (CIS) systems is progressing taking into account the requirements coming from the MITICA plant units, in terms of number and type of interface signals, data sampling frequency values, operating states, protection actions and required reaction times and reliability. As the HNBs will be ITER components, additional requirements derive from the ITER plant control design handbook that specifies the design criteria and standard technologies to be applied to ITER plant systems. A distinction must be made in MITICA between plant units that will be part of the HNB, such as the power supply systems, and plant units that are auxiliaries, such as the gas and vacuum system. In the NBTF these components shall interface with MITICA CODAS and CIS, whereas in ITER they will be autonomous plant systems providing services to the HNB. The distinction reported above suggests defining the architecture of MITICA Instrumentation and Control (I&C) as split into the following functional blocks: i) HNB plant system including components that will be part of the HNB; ii) Service plant system including all operational plant units that need control in the NBTF but are implemented outside the ITER HNB; iii) Diagnostics plant system; iv) Central I&C (CODAS and CIS). The paper presents the requirements for MITICA CODAS and CIS and derives from these the system architecture. The design of CODAS and CIS is discussed with reference to the lesson learned in the implementation of SPIDER CODAS and CIS (the NBTF ion source test bed) and to the technologies suitable for the implementation. Abstract

The two projects of the ITER Neutral Beam Test Facility in Padova are MITICA, the full scale prototype of the heating Neutral Beam Injector (NBI) and SPIDER, the full-size negative ion source of the NBI. Both include a Radio Frequency (RF) Ion Source where plasma is produced by the inductive coupling with coils wound around vacuum chambers called driver cases. Each coil is fed at 1 MHz up to a power of 100 kW, which corresponds to a voltage of about 12 kV rms, with nominal plasma parameters. According to the ITER requirements, the ion source is in vacuum to avoid radiation induced conductivity; concern on the voltage hold off of the source components exists, in particular related to the contact zone between the coil and the driver case characterized by intensification of the E-field. The development of a test bed called High Voltage Radio Frequency Test Facility (HVRFTF) has been launched to study the issues related to the voltage hold off in this operational environment and to verify the electrical design of the drivers adopted in the ion sources of SPIDER and MITICA. The paper presents the studies addressed to identify the HVRFTF requirements, to conceive and design suitable driver mock-up to reproduce operative conditions relevant to the RF drivers of SPIDER and MITICA for the characterization of their dielectric strength, to work out a suitable RF circuit for the HVRFTF to generate the required voltage and to design a flexible test arrangement allowing the variation of the quantities which influence the voltage hold off, such as the pressure, geometry and materials of the devices under test, in order to perform parametric analyses. Abstract

ITER envisages the use of two heating neutral beam injectors plus an optional one as part of the auxiliary heating and current drive system, to reach the desired performances during its various phases of operation. The 16.5 MW expected neutral beam power per injector is several notches higher than worldwide existing facilities.In order to enable such development, a Neutral Beam Test Facility (NBTF) was established at Consorzio RFX, exploiting the synergy of two test beds, called SPIDER and MITICA. SPIDER is dedicated developing and char-acterizing large efficient negative ion sources at relevant parameters in ITER-like conditions: source and accel-erator located in the same vacuum where the beam propagates, immunity to electromagnetic interferences of multiple radio-frequency (RF) antennas, avoidance of RF-induced discharges on the outside of the source. Three years of experiments on SPIDER have addressed to the necessary design modifications to enable full perfor-mances. The source is presently under a long shut-down phase to incorporate learnings from the experimental campaign, in particular events/issues occurred during operation, which led to the identification of improvement opportunities/necessities (e.g. RF discharges, local burns, water leaks, other damages, configuration/design upgrades to maximize chances/margin to quest target parameters).Parallelly, developments on MITICA, the full-scale prototype of the ITER Neutral Beam Injector (NBI) featuring a 1 MV accelerator and ion neutralization, are underway including manufacturing of the beam source, accel-erator and the beam line components, while power supplies and auxiliary plants, already installed, are under final testing and commissioning.Integration, commissioning and tests of the 1 MV power supplies are essential for this first-of-kind system, unparalleled both in research and industry field. 1.2 MV dc insulating tests of high voltage components were successfully completed. The integrated test to confirm 1 MV output by combining invertor systems, DC gener-ators and transmission lines extracted errors/accidents in some components. To realize a concrete system for ITER, said events have been addressed and solutions for the repair and the improvement of the system were developed.Hence, NBTF is emerging as a necessary facility, due to the large gap with existing injectors, effectively dedicated to identify issues and find solutions to enable successful ITER NBI operations in a time bound fashion. The lessons learned during the implementation on NBTF and future perspectives are here discussed.

Abstract

The Residual Ion Dump Power Supply (RIDPS) is part of the Ground Related Power Supplies (GRPS) of the MITICA experiment of the ITER Neutral Beam Test Facility (NBTF) and the two ITER Heating Neutral Beam Injectors (HNBI). The GRPS will be manufactured by OCEM Energy Technology s.r.l. (OCEM) via a procurement contract with F4E. The RIDPS is devoted to feed the electrostatic Residual Ion Dump (RID), which deflects and collects the beam residual ions after the neutralization process. The maximum average voltage of the RIDPS is 25 kV, to which can be superimposed a sinusoidal or trapezoidal alternate voltage at 50 Hz, 5 kV maximum. The nominal current is 60 A, with a maximum pulse length of 1 h. Abstract

The gas supply for the neutralizer of the Heating Neutral Beam is designed to guarantee the establishment of the gas cloud needed to neutralize the negative ion beam, generated in the beam source, before it can be injected into the tokamak for plasma heating. To guarantee the proper function for optimal beam properties, an experimental validation of the analytical predictions of the gas flow behavior under the conditions of the test facility MITICA (Megavolt ITER Injector and Concept Advancement) was needed. Herewith the throughput properties of the designed gas injection nozzles had to be investigated as well as the behavior of the system in case of a sudden shutdown of the supply. These experiments have been performed at the modified TransFlow facility at KIT. Abstract

The Acceleration Grid Power Supply (AGPS) is a system devoted to supply the acceleration grids of the MITICA experiment, the full scale prototype of the ITER Neutral Beam Injector (NBI), being built in Padova (Italy) to test the NBI in advance of the operation in ITER. The procurement of the AGPS is split in two parts: the low voltage conversion system, namely the AGPS-Conversion System (AGPS-CS,) being procured by the European domestic agency, and the high voltage DC Generators (AGPS-DCG), being procured by the Japanese domestic agency. After the contract award, in late 2015, the executive design phase of the AGPS-CS has been finalized. Abstract

• The insulation capability of a full silica kapton coated optical fiber in vacuum under DC voltage is about 160kV for 600mm length. • The commercial batteries providing the highest energy density for low power application are Li-SOCl2 battery • The PIC microcontroller proven to be a reliable device with respect to EMI irradiated from Surge pulses as well as it can be a very low power consumption ADC when the IDLE and Standby operational modes are exploited. • A solution to feed electronic devices operating at high voltage in harsh environments (vacuum, risk of discharges, x rays in the nearby,...) in a reliable way consists in enclosing the batteries in a vacuum tight commercial nipple closed by a dedicated feedthrough. • The precise synchronization of fast events within a system of distributed devices can be done with a distributed trigger network when a deterministic time delay is known. The trigger time can be also precisely time stamped by means of a fast transient FPGA recorder provided by a iW-RainboW-G36S board that is kept in sync with a GPS absolute time source with IEEE1588 protocol. ITER is an experimental fusion device and requires two Neutral Beam Injectors (NBIs) for plasma heating and current drive which have to supply a power of 16.5 MW each, delivered by a 1MeV deuterium beam. This D0 beam is generated starting from negative ions, produced inside a RF driven ion source, and accelerated by a Multi-Aperture Multi-Grid electrostatic accelerator insulated in vacuum. MITICA (Megavolt ITER Injector & Concept Advancement) is a full-scale prototype of the ITER Heating Neutral Beams (HNBs), devoted to test and optimize the design, under construction in Padova at the Neutral Beam Test Facility (NBTF) hosted by the Consorzio RFX. One of the most critical requirements in MITICA concerns the capability to withstand the nominal voltage of 1MV on a single long gap (≈1m), which separates the beam source and the vacuum vessel, insulated by vacuum or low pressure gas (10−6-10−3 mbar range) and with large size electrodes. In order to address this issue, a dedicated experimental test campaign exploiting a 1:1 mockup of the MITICA Beam Source will be carried out at NBTF before the installation of the actual Beam Source. During this test campaign, a set of electrical diagnostics will be installed to identify the location of the breakdowns as well as to measure the magnitude of the microdischarge currents (the precursors of vacuum breakdowns), and arc currents to provide useful information to optimize the electrostatic design of the ITER HNB and to validate the numerical models. Abstract

MITICA, the full-scale prototype of ITER Heating Neutral Beam (HNBs), has challenging requirements on its power supplies. In particular its unconventional high voltage system is designed to operate at high power and voltage (up to -1 MV dc and about 54 MW), with many interfaces and high voltage insulation technologies co-existing in a single plant. Moreover, the electrical system must manage frequent breakdowns between the accelerator grids during the operation, creating electrical fast transients characterized by extremely high voltage and current peaks. In the conceptual design phase suitable design provisions were conceived to limit the energy in the grids and to limit the overvoltage on specific components in the case of grids-breakdown. The integration tests of the power supplies showed the capability of the system to generate and sustain voltage as high as 700 kV; at higher voltage the voltage withstanding capability was not confirmed as some breakdowns occurred in the plant. Although the location of the breakdowns has not been identified yet, an impact of such breakdowns was highlighted as a couple of the components of the plant suffered a damage. This paper is focused on the analyses performed for the understanding of the fault occurred on the secondary bushing of the 1 MV insulating transformer dedicated to the supply of the Ion Source and Extraction Power Supply system (ISEPS). An extensive activity of modelling and simulation has been developed for explaining the dynamic occurred. The model is based on the stray parameters of the components, which were not easy to be estimated in the design phase, but which turn out to have relevant effects in local fast transient phenomena. After reaching a full understanding of the phenomena, the models have been used to support the conceptual design of an additional protection system for the transformer, for MITICA but also in view of the ITER installation. Abstract

This research paper aims at providing some elements of analysis on the complex issue of the colonization of nature. In it a descriptive argument is carried out based on theoretical findings on the relationships between extractivism, which is a proper practice of the colonial device, and what is here called colonization of nature. The article initially presents an assessment of the impact on the configuration of the ancestral vision and appropriation of the territory and its cultural contents, as a result of the imposition of a new semantics, in reference to the device of the colonial powers. Then, the relationship between extractivism and the process of colonization of nature is analyzed; to finally sketch a brief reflection, by linking contemporary issues and contexts. Este artículo de investigación pretende brindar elementos de análisis sobre el complejo tema de la colonización de la naturaleza. En él se hace una argumentación descriptiva basada hallazgos teóricos sobre las relaciones entre el extractivismo, una práctica propia del dispositivo colonial, y lo que aquí denominamos colonización de la naturaleza. El artículo presenta inicialmente un balance del impacto en la configuración de la visión-apropiación ancestral del territorio y su contenido cultural, a raíz de la imposición de una nueva semántica, en referencia al dispositivo de poder colonial. Luego, se analiza la relación del extractivismo con el proceso de colonización de la naturaleza, para finalmente esbozar una reflexión breve vinculando contextos y problemas contemporáneos.

Abstract

MITICA (Megavolt ITER Injector & Concept Advancement), the full scale prototype of ITER Heating Neutral Beam, is under realization at the Neutral Beam Test Facility (Padova, Italy). It is designed to deliver 16.5 MW to ITER plasma, obtained by accelerating negative Deuterium ions up to 1 MeV for a total ion current of 40 A and then neutralized. MITICA Acceleration Power Supply is composed of several non-standard equipment, beyond industrial standard for insulation voltage level (-1 MVdc) and dimensions. Voltage withstand tests (up to 1.265 MVdc) have been performed in five subsequent steps (from 2018 to 2019), according to the installation progress, after connecting equipment belonging to different procurements. During integrated commissioning, started in 2021, two breakdowns occurred in a position of the HV plant not still identified, so they could be occurred either in air or in SF6. To identify the locations of possible weak insulation points, the existing diagnostics for partial discharge detection (the precursor of breakdowns) as a first step have been improved on air-insulated parts by consisting in a set of instrumentation, like capacitive probes and off-the-shelf instruments for AC application (acoustic and electromagnetic sensors). The paper deals with the instruments qualification to assess their suitability for DC usage and then with the investigation performed in MITICA, in particular: 1) sensitivity assessment campaign, with artificially produced corona effect to identify the minimum threshold of each diagnostics 2) voltage application to MITICA plant, moving the instrumentation around equipment and increasing progressively the voltage looking for corona phenomena to identify possible weak insulation points. Abstract

The Acceleration Grid Power Supply of the MITICA test facility in Padova (Italy) is currently under commissioning. The power conversion system, the DC generator, and the High Voltage equipment have been individually commissioned, whereas the integration tests are ongoing. It is a challenging process due to the unconventional application, to the variety of different electrical technologies involved and to the complexity of the interfaces. During the integrated tests of the power supplies the achievement of 700 kV stable operation has been demonstrated for the first time in a Neutral Beam Injector, but an unexpected event occurred, most likely a breakdown in the HV part, which resulted in a fault of the DC generator. A subsequent test using an auxiliary power supply was performed to check the voltage withstanding capability of the HV plant, but another breakdown occurred at around 1MV. This paper describes the activity performed to identify the location of the breakdowns affecting the integrated tests. A test campaign has been devised with increased diagnostic capabilities and specific strategy conceived to trigger intentional breakdowns in specific locations and collect measurement patterns for different cases. The results of the campaign will be presented and the current understanding of the issue will be described, with a view on future tests and further improvements of diagnostics. Abstract

MITICA is one of the two ongoing experiments at the ITER Neutral Beam Test Facility (NBTF) located in Padova (Italy). MITICA aims to develop the full-size neutral beam injector of ITER and, as such, its Control and Data Acquisition System will adhere to ITER CODAC directives. In particular, its timing system will be based on the IEEE1588 PTPv2 protocol and will use the ITER Time Communication Network (TCN). Following the ITER device catalog, the National Instruments PXI-6683(H) PTP timing modules will be used to generate triggers and clocks that are synchronized with a PTP grandmaster clock. Data acquisition techniques, such as lazy triggers [1], will be also used to implement also event-driven data acquisition without the need of any hardware link in addition to the Ethernet connections used to transfer data and timing synchronization. In order to evaluate the accuracy over time that can be achieved with different network topologies and configurations, a test system has been set-up consisting of a grand master clock, two PXI-6683(H) devices and two PTP aware network switches. In particular, the impact on accuracy due to the transparent and boundary clocks configurations has been investigated. In addition, a detailed simulation of the network and the involved devices has been performed using the OMNET++ discrete event simulator. The simulation parameters include not only the network and switches configuration, but also the PID parameters used in the clock servo controllers. A comparison between simulated and measured statistics is reported, together with a discussion on the possible optimal configuration strategies.

Abstract

The heating neutral beam (HNB) systems at ITER are designed to inject a total of 33 MW of either 1 MeV \textD^0 or 870 keV \textH^0 beams into the ITER plasma using two injectors with a possible addition of a third injector later to increase the injected power to $\sim 50$ MW. The injectors operate in a radioactive environment and should survive the life time of ITER, placing thereby stringent requirements on material and manufacturing choices. To ensure a smooth operational phase of neutral beams at ITER, a neutral beam test facility is under construction at Consorzio RFX, Padova, (hereinafter referred to as RFX), and consists of two test beds. The 100-kV SPIDER test bed will be used to optimize the source operation for H and D beams. The 1-MV MITICA test bed is essentially a full scale ITER prototype injector. The manufacturing and operational experiences at MITICA will not only establish the manufacturing processes of ITER HNB components but will also allow validation of the operational space of the injectors for ITER HNB. Operation of the two facilities is expected to begin in 2016 and 2019, respectively. Currently, the experiments on the ELISE facility, IPP Garching, with a half ITER sized RF beam source are underway. The ITER relevant parameters for the H beams have been achieved. Efforts are underway to optimize the same with D beams. The experimental database from ELISE will be an important input for establishing the SPIDER operation. Abstract

The High Voltage Padova Test Facility (HVPTF) is an experimental device for investigating HV insulation in vacuum, in support of the realization of MITICA, the prototype of a neutral beam injector for ITER. The facility investigates the physical phenomena underlying voltage holding in vacuum, such as the mechanisms causing breakdowns and the electrode conditioning process, along with testing technical solutions to increase the breakdown threshold. Inside a high vacuum chamber, two stainless steel electrodes, separated by a few centimetres gap, can achieve HV values up to 400 kV each. The conditioning process consists of the gradual increase of the breakdown voltage in time, until the system achieves a saturation value. Between two consecutive breakdown events, current micro-discharges involving the electrodes are observed; high energy X-rays (up to hundreds of keV) and a global increase of gas emission (in particular H2 and CO2 are detected by the Residual Gas Analyser) are measured in correspondence to the current events. Three new Xrays detectors have been recently installed: a small LYSO (4 × 4 × 20 mm3), a LaBr3 (1" x 3/4") and a thin YAP (1"x 2 mm) scintillating crystals, coupled to photomultipliers. They all are small sized scintillators, with very fast pulses (40-100 ns) in order to minimize pile-up effects during the high intensity discharges. However, the high Z and densities guarantee a full energy absorption of the X-rays (they can measure up to 500 keV), with a significant probability, in spite of the small sizes. Energy resolutions are less than 9%. In this contribution we present a characterization of the micro-discharge dynamics occurring during the conditioning phase, focusing on the new details uncovered via the new diagnostics.

Abstract

In the design of complex facilities and plants, such as those involved for fusion experiments, it is often very challenging to create detailed global structural models in the design phase, able to represent the structure as a whole, and at the same time to take into account the interaction among different components. Indeed, different components are characterized by a different scale and hence require a different level of detail. This work presents an integrated global FE model of the MITICA plant (Padua, IT) for the study of the behaviour and interaction of the structural elements, with particular attention to the final configuration after the installation. The model thus takes into account all the interactions between the various parts, initially designed in a decoupled way, with the aim of verifying, both from a static and dynamic point of view, the main elements and the interface forces between the components. Different constraint configurations have been taken into account according to the possible kinematic behaviour that the plant can assume, and depending also on the use of the facility. A single integrated global model allows also to identify the most critical elements of the structure, and hence to realize detailed sub-models for the local verification, and to eventually design a proper monitoring system. In conclusion, this work demonstrates the importance of having an integrated model, and proposes a strategy specifically tailored for the MITICA plant. Abstract

The design of the beamline components of MITICA, the full prototype of the ITER heating neutral beam injectors, is almost finalised and technical specifications for the procurement are under preparation. These components are the gas neutraliser, the electrostatic residual ion dump, and the calorimeter. Electron dump panels are foreseen each side of the upstream end of the neutraliser to protect the cryo-panels from electrons, created by stripping and other processes, that exit the 1 MeV accelerator. As the design of the components must fulfil requirements on the beam physics, insight on physical processes is required to identify performance trade-offs and constraints. The spatial gas distribution was simulated to verify the pumping requirements with electron dump panels and local conditions for breakdown voltage. Electrostatic analyses were carried out for the insulating elements of the RID to verify the limits of the electric field intensity. Different criteria were approached to investigate the fracture behaviour of ceramics considering the manufacturing implications and extrapolating the conditions for proof testing. Severe heating conditions will be applied steadily, as the maximum pulse duration is 1 h, and cyclically so requiring to fulfil fatigue and ratcheting verifications. High heat fluxes, up to 13 MW/m 2 on the calorimeter, with enhanced heat transfer in subcooled boiling conditions will occur in the actively cooled CuCr1Zr panel elements provided with twisted tapes as turbulence promoters. Special R&D activities were undertaken to support the design: manufacturing of thick twisted tapes leading to an increased cooling performance while maintaining flow rate requirements, bending of swirl tubes, verification for permanent deformations due to stress relaxation after heating of swirl tubes, double side deep drilling of 2 m long CuCr1Zr plates. Chama-se aqui a atenção para a singularidade da “mitologia clássica” enquanto uma construção histórica particular, resultado da prática dos mitógrafos, e adverte-se a necessidade de distinguir entre "mítica" e "mitologia". Procura-se mostrar a importância dos estudos clássicos na configuração do horizonte da Antropologia. Discute-se a afirmação de Lévi-Strauss de que um mito é logo reconhecível como mito “por qualquer leitor do mundo”; sua apreciação da mitologia grega e comparada com a visão de um helenista, Eudoro de Sousa, que também se preocupou com a singularidade da mítica dos helenos. No interesse de esclarecer o sentido de “mito” como categoria antropológica, procura-se ainda reconsiderar a (moderna) oposição teórica dos conceitos de mythos e lógos.

Abstract

The ITER Neutral Beam Test Facility (NBTF), called PRIMA (Padova Research on ITER Megavolt Accelerator), is hosted in Padova, Italy and includes two experiments: MITICA, the full-scale prototype of the ITER heating neutral beam injector, and SPIDER, the full-size radio frequency negative-ions source. The NBTF realization and the exploitation of SPIDER and MITICA have been recognized as necessary to make the future operation of the ITER heating neutral beam injectors efficient and reliable, fundamental to the achievement of thermonuclear-relevant plasma parameters in ITER. This paper reports on design and R&D carried out to construct PRIMA, SPIDER and MITICA, and highlights the huge progress made in just a few years, from the signature of the agreement for the NBTF realization in 2011, up to now—when the buildings and relevant infrastructures have been completed, SPIDER is entering the integrated commissioning phase and the procurements of several MITICA components are at a well advanced stage.

Abstract

The high-Q operation of the ITER tokamak will require two Neutral Beam Injectors (NBIs) for plasma heating and current drive. Each beam will be generated by a 40 A current of Deuterium negative ions, accelerated up to the specific energy of 1 MeV and then neutralized. The power delivered to the plasma by each NBI shall reach 16 MW with duration up to 1 h. The beam source will be constituted by an RF-driven negative ion source at -1 MV potential, by a Multi-Aperture, Multi-Grid (MAMuG) electrostatic accelerator (consisting of 5 stages at intermediate potentials), and a gas-box neutralizer at ground potential. All components will be installed in a vacuum vessel (also at ground potential), together with a high-capacity cryo-pumping system which controls of the background gas pressure. In order to validate the ITER NBI design and address all the outstanding issues related to these demanding requirements, a full scale prototype called MITICA (Megavolt ITER Injector & Concept Advancement), is under construction in Padova at Consorzio RFX. Voltage insulation in vacuum and/or very low-pressure gas on a single gap is indeed one of the expected issues which MITICA will have to deal with. For this reason, before the installation of the MITICA Beam source, an experimental program for anticipating the full-scale voltage holding tests is studied and proposed, using the real MITICA vacuum vessel (on-site) together with a beam source mock-up without and with an intermediate electrostatic shield, in order to get a first voltage holding assessment of the expected MITICA voltage holding capability, to evaluate the effect of the intermediate shield and to assess the effect of the background pressure on the voltage holding capability of the system.

Abstract

The Vacuum Tight Threaded Junction (VTTJ) is an innovative vacuum-compatible non-welded junction developed and patented by Consorzio RFX. This technique was used to join non easily weldable materials, such as copper and stainless steel, to manufacture several in vacuum components for the two experiments of the Neutral Beam Test Facilities, i.e. SPIDER and MITICA. SPIDER and MITICA experiments are actively cooled by Ultrapure Water (UPW) to electrically insulate in-vessel components that are polarised to high voltage levels. The most heated components, made of copper or copper alloy, are connected to stainless steel piping by means of VTTJ technique and cooled by UPW. VTTJ has been tested up to 500 bar internal pressure and up to 700°C showing excellent leak tightness in vacuum conditions and high mechanical strength. However, no investigations on the corrosion performance of these coupled metals in UPW exposed to high voltages have been carried out. VTTJ prototypes were sectioned and it was observed that not only this junction is exposed to a high water velocity (up to 7 m/s), it is also subjected to stagnant water regions. This paper presents first experimental results of stainless steel and copper samples exposed to stagnant Ultrapure water at ambient temperature to investigate their corrosion behaviour in the VTTJ. Trace metal analysis using Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) was used to quantify the release of metals when stainless steel and copper are either exposed separately to UPW or when they are coupled together through the VTTJ in stagnant conditions.

Abstract

The MITICA experiment at Consorzio RFX Padova, within the framework of the European Magnetic Confinement Fusion effort, is a full-scale prototype of the Neutral Beam Injector (NBI) heating system envisioned for ITER, which will be required to produce 1MeV beams of deuterium with an ion current of 40 A for up to 1 hour. These specifications far exceed any current NBI devices with a compact electrostatic accelerator to operate at 1MV being double the voltage reached up to now. To achieve these conditions the entire beam source and accelerator of MITICA are insulated by a vacuum instead of the more commonly used insulating gas. This is to avoid radiation induced conductivity in the gas by radiation produced from fusion reactions. However, this serves to be an overall more complex system and vacuum insulation has its own substantial hurdles regards stability and voltage holding. The High Voltage Padova Test Facility (HVPTF) is a concurrent R&D project focused on understanding the physical processes behind breakdown and micro-discharges in high-voltage insulation, as well as developing new diagnostics, models, and operational modes to address these challenges and aid in the stable operation of MITICA. The highresolution charac-terization of the X-ray energy spectrum during the high voltage conditioning of a multi electrode vacuum insulated system such as HVPTF could be vital to understand the fundamentals behind voltage breakdowns and which stage is causing the micro discharge onset. This technique seems particularly promising for measuring small dark currents (< 10?A), which are generally difficult to be measured with standard techniques. The X-rays produced during HV experiments are mainly due to bremsstrahlung interaction between the electrons escaping from the HV electrodes (field emission effect) and the background gas or the chamber walls. The X-rays spectrum extends from low energy ( ? keV) up to several hundreds of keV depending on the maximum potential difference applied to the electrodes (up to 800 kV). During these events high photon flux (>106 photons/cm2s) is produced. This paper shows the development and preliminary results of a newly designed X-Ray diagnostic based on Gas Electron Multiplier (XR-GEM). This detector is able to stand very high rate (> MHz) in single photon counting mode and can cover the energy range from 3 - 50 keV. The XR GEM detector is equipped with anodic pads (256 pads 6x6 mm2) readout with a new data acquisition system called GEMINI, which gives the possibility to obtain a counting rate of several MHz and, thus, sub-ms time resolution together with mm spatial resolution.

Abstract

The Neutral Beam Test Facility (NBTF, Padova, Italy) is a facility devoted to the test and optimization of the Neautral Beam Injector for ITER. A full-scale prototype, called MITICA, is under construction at NBTF and has to demonstrate all the design parameters for ITER, among which a stable beam operation at the enrgy of 1MeV. In order to test and optimize the stable high voltage holding of 1MV, a dedicated campaign is foreseen for 2022, utilizing realistic mock-ups of MITICA ion source and accelerator. During the campaign, the mock-up of the ion source will be biased with an increasing potential up to -1MV and the discharge towards the grounded electrodes will be observed. In this way, possible weak points of the geometry will be detected and possibly mitigated. As diagnostics for discharge position and intensity, a system of cameras was designed, including visible cameras, IR camera and fast camera. The results of this optical diagnostics will be then compared with the electric measuments of the discharges taken on a dedicated ground electrode, for a cross check. This paper describes the motivations of the choice of the type and number of diagnostic cameras adopted during the experiments, the optimization of their layout, which includes also the use of a series of mirrors, the design of supports and protection systems, and the procedure to interpret the experimental data and cross check them with the electric measurements.

This document is part of deliverable D2.1.1 of the Specific Contract F4E-OFC-531-03 - Neutral Beam Test Facility Diagnostics, Task Order No.3: MITICA diagnostics #3. It contains the technical specification for the procurement of ITER-like thermocouples to be installed on the MITICA Beam Line Components. Specification of non ITER-like thermocouples will be a different document for a separate procurement. These thermocouples will be delivered to the Beam Line Components supplier for installation.
